Capital investments are made for a variety of reasons, ranging from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals, which lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

Approach To prevent exhaustion caused by thermal stress, a rescuer can wear a liquid-cooled hood and vest which absorbs heat, thereby reducing the heat-induced strain on the rescuer's heart and circulatory system. How It Works Liquid coolant is continuously circulated through a self-contained system in which the coolant is chilled by a heat sink on the wearer's belt. The coolant, which is a mixture of alcohol and water, is pumped from the heat sink to bladders inside the hood and vest where it absorbs body heat. After absorbing heat In the hood and vest areas, the coolant returns to the heat sink where it is rechilled by passing through a tube coiled around a steel can containing a block of ice. To adjust the temperature of coolant leaving the heat sink unit, a valve can be operated by the wearer, causing part of the flow to bypass the coil. A small pump and a rechargeable battery are also part of the assembly.

A unique process for removing cyanide and base metal complexes from industrial waste streams was patented by Borberly et al. (1984). The process uses S0, (liquid or gas, or solutions of sulfite salts, or from burning elemental sulfur), plus air that is dispersed in the effluent using a well agitated vessel. Acid produced in the oxidation reactions is neutralized with lime at a controlled pH generally in the range 7 to 10. The reaction requires the presence of soluble copper as a catalyst that can be supplemented by copper sulfate if necessary. The process can be applied to the detoxification of gold and silver mining waste streams, such as carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailing pulps, barren solution bleeds, pond waters and heap leach rinse solutions and also to plating shops waste waters. The S02/Air process has substantial advantages over two of the main alternative methods of cyanide destruction, namely alkaline chlorination and hydrogen peroxide. Alkaline chlorination is highly penalized in terms of reagent consumption. Chlorine is a strong oxidant reacting with species other than cyanide present in the effluent such as thiocyanate and sulfides. Furthermore, alkaline chlorination is an incomplete detoxification process. Iron cyanide is not removed and the potential for harmful byproducts species exist. Consequently, final effluents may be subject to additional treatment in order to comply with regulatory demands.

The iron-mines of the Ilsede Hütte Co. are at a town called Peine, about 20 miles east of the city of Hanover, on the railroad to Brunswick (Braunschweig). Hanover, the capital of the province, is a military city, of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, and Brunswick, 33 miles to the westward, has half this number. The mines here described are located in a hamlet called Bülten. The Ilsede Hütte Co. operates two mines, 1.5 miles apart, in this district, Gruber Bülten Adenstadt and Gruber Lengede Bodenstadt. It also operates an iron-mine north of Hanover, known as Eiserhaven, and one in the Harz mountains, the Georg Friedrich, at Grauhof. At Bülten a coarse conglomerate, a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains nodules of limonite, cemented together by calcium phosphate. The ore contains Fe, 25 to 45; Mn, 3 to 4; P, 0.6 to 1.4; S, 0.02 to 0.09; and CaCO3, 40 per cent. Directly above the conglomerate is limestone, b, followed by a mixture of clay and sand, c. Below the conglomerate is a hard clay floor, d. The ore-body, from 10 to, 12 km. long, and from 3 to 4 km. wide, has a maximum thickness of 20 m. It clips approximately 10° S.E., and strikes N. 45° E. Diamond-drill prospecting shows that the thickness diminishes to 1 m. as the end of the deposit is approached to the northward. At this point the deposit is 250 m. below the surface. In Fig. 2, the arrow, A, indicates the general direction of the work along the face, a, which is carried forward in a straight line for its entire length. At B, a train is approaching, which has come from the bench-track, shown at G, by a circuitous route, and is dumping the overburden behind the face, in the space left by the excavated rock. Gold mineralization at Kidston occurs in a semicontinuous zone near the margin of a large, late Palaeozoic breccia pipe. The pipe is ovoid in plan, funnel-shaped in cross section and straddles a contact between Proterozoic metamorphic and granitoid rocks which are intruded by a swarm of late Palaeozoic acid dykes. Rock fragments within the breccia pipe reflect the enclosing country rocks and mix in various proportions to form gradational lithological domains. Most of the gold is free and is located in the breccia matrix and in a set of inwardly dipping sheeted quartz veins which kink around the pipe margin. Sulphide minerals, dominantly pyrite, occur as disseminations in the breccia matrix and as aggregates in the cores of quartz veins. Hydrothermal altLration is pervasive within the breccia and is most intense in areas with the highest percentage of acid dyke fragments. Sericite and carbonate are the main alteration minerals. An empirically developed genetic theory for the formation of the breccia pipe and attendant mineralization involves magmatic and post-magmatic processes associated with the intrusion of a granitoid body to a shallow level in the crust. Economic evaluation of the deposit relied heavily on the results of diamond drilling. Both polygonal and geostatistical reserves were calculated and found to be in close agreement. Geostatistical reserves are considered to more closely reflect the tonnes and grade achievable during mining. The new Niagara Falls Intake Tunnel, mined in the highly fractured Lockport Dolomite, encountered prolific inflows of water contained in rock seams directly linked to the Niagara River. These inflows were pressurized and, more significantly, contained high concentrations of dissolved H2S gas. The contractors attempts to control the water/gas inflows included cement and chemical grouting from inside the tunnel. Ultimately, improving the rate of air exchange in the tunnel by increasing the fan capacity, in conjunction with a pattern down-hole pre-grouting program along the tunnel alignment allowed the contractor to control the concentration of H2S gas and complete the tunnel.

Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. A review of thermodynamic information and models of slags, including associated software when available, is presented. The pertinence and accuracy of these models is discussed by comparison of their predictions for various slag thermodynamic properties with the available experimental data. Practical industrial applications will be illustrated by a literature review of the dephosphorization process of ferromanganese alloys and by the description of Ti behavior during silico-manganese alloys production. This latter example will show how the thermodynamic models have been used to propose a flotation treatment at low temperature to enhance TiC removal.

Most mining operations, including iron ore, maintain a focus on continuous improvement and asset optimisation in their operations. As all the unit operations in the Mine-to-Mill value chain are interdependent, available technologies that address efficiencies across the value chain are once again in the spotlight as companies are driven to improve productivity and maximise mine site profits to increase return on capital invested. Core to continuous improvement is the need to understand the baseline and impact of changes to the process. In this paper, we discuss some of the critical attributes in the Mine-to-Mill process, including their influence on productivity and cost, the need for direct measurement and areas where they should be applied. Many initiatives can be considered to improve Mine-to-Mill processes. Mining operations are planned and executed based on designs and models to achieve the operation's objectives. However, there are many variables in the different parts of the value chain, such as blasting, material handling, crushing and screening. Therefore, measurement of the key attributes establishes the baseline for Mine-to-Mill (or Pit to Plant) performance, which is necessary to understand the impact of any proposed improvements to the process design and execution and monitor the outcomes on an ongoing basis sustain the improvements that have been implemented. This paper focuses on two types of measurement – blast movement and particle size of materials through the Mine-to-Mill process. Several innovative technologies and control loops are readily available to measure these attributes and assist operations to improve productivity and mine site profits. The size of the tangible benefits, which can flow from measuring and optimising fragmentation and blast movement, provide a remarkable return on the investment. Realising these benefits needs a focus outside conventional operation silos as a successful Mine-to-Mill project requires a multidiscipline approach across all the silos in the value chain. Required technologies are available; adding the necessary ingredients of communication and co-operation by all concerned across the silos will ensure the benefits are realised.

Low-grade ores can be designated by two main classifications: (1) simple low-grade ores, and (2) complex low-grade ores. As a rule the first type has a relatively small metal content, although low- grade iron ores contain a rather high percentage of metal. As the simple type is the one that is ordinarily in mind when the term "low-grade ore" is used, the paper will be devoted mainly to ores in this general category. Cheap treatment is the prime requirement in utilizing low-grade ores of the simple type, although in some cases the value of nonmetallic by-products, such as limestone for fer- tilizer and silica for flux, allows a little more lati- tude than in the usual situation. When the costs are divided under the three headings-mining, milling, and smelting-it is apparent that the last group will not constitute an important factor as a rule because the high concentrating ratio makes the smelting cost per ton of ore fairly low.

Mean boundary migration depended linearly upon creep extension under various conditions. Prolonged annealing or air-casting increased the proportion of immobile boundaries at a given stage of tests. Grain growth during annealing followed a power law. The linking of migration and sliding in creep and models for migration are examined; activation energies are calculated from these models. Segregation of oxygen to boundaries appears to be a controlling factor. THE idea that boundary migration and boundary sliding during creep are linked has often been suggested,'-5 especially when evidence has been obtained for an alternation between the two processes. In simple bicrystals sliding can occur without any migration6 but in more complex bicrystals7 it is observed. McLean' and Couling and Roberts 5 made measurements of both sliding and migration; McLean concluded that there was no linking of the two processes whereas Couling and Roberts supported the idea. McLean' also developed a model for migration during creep and annealing. The present work was initiated as part of a study of the recrystallization of lead during creep9 but has been extended to examine some aspects of the mechanism of migration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specially refined high-purity lead* was used; the total of impurities, excluding oxygen, was 0.0008 wt pct. Oxygen was removed as far as possible by melting in vacuo, treating at 550" to 600°C with hydrogen and then casting at 450°C under a vacuum of 10-2 mm Hg; the oxygen was then believed to be 0.00005 wt pct. Specimens were made from extruded strip and then annealed at the required temperature in an air oven, controlled to 5 lac. They were then polished in a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. At this stage some specimens were etched to give grain contrast and their grain sizes determined by the intercept method. Migration of boundaries during creep was measured on the surface of polished (not etched) specimens, directly loaded at room temperature (22°C) or 50°C (52"C) to initial stresses of 300 to 700 1b per sq in. Twenty six vacuum-cast hydrogen-reduced specimens were used and, in addition, two specimens were from material air cast after hydrogen reduction ("partial" air cast) and two from air-cast material not treated with hydrogen ("full" air cast). Duplicates were made in the majority of tests. At intervals through the creep tests, specimens were unloaded and the migration measured, normal to the direction of migration at the point of measurement, for each boundary along standard traverses. Usually between 110 to 180 boundaries were measured at each of some twelve stages of the tests. Migration was measured on the projected image (X100) using prism illumination. Fig. 1 illustrates the method of measurement and shows the kind of variation of migration found from boundary to boundary and along particular boundaries. Fig. 2 gives an example of more extensive migration. The mean value of distance migrated was generally reproducible to *10 pct but occasional points gave a scatter of *20 pct. The correctibn applied by McLean8 to allow for the contribution sliding makes to the apparent distance of migration could not be used, for the sliding at most boundaries was too small to measure with the equipment available. INTRODUCTION Mine No. 95 of the Consolidation Coal Co., a divi¬sion of Continental Oil Co., is located in Shinnston, WV. Mine No. 95 was opened in January 1967 and has been operating continuously since that time. The mine has 544 hourly and salaried employees. In 1974 this mine was the largest coal producer in West Virginia. Opera¬tions include two longwall sections and eight Marietta Borer continuous miners. Originally there were also two Jeffrey Heliminer continuous miners, but use of these was discontinued in June 1978. Production averages 12 727 t/d (14,000 stpd). Two portals now service the mine with a third portal proposed for 1978. GEOLOGY Mining takes place in the Pittsburgh coal seam which dips 0.04 rad (21h°) northwest. The working seam is steam coal with an average height of 2.2 m (86 in.). Immediately above the seam, the overburden is com¬posed of 6.1 m (20 ft) of shales followed by 6.1 m (20 ft) of weak sandstone and 51.8 (170 ft) of shaley limestone. The shale weathers when exposed to mois¬ture. Surface water has been a problem due to a fire¬clay floor which turns to paste when mixed with water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The present mining plan for Consol's No. 95 mine has a proposed life of 35 to 40 years. One set of main headings has been driven in the north direction and one set in a western direction. These are the areas in which the majority of the virgin coal lies. The panels are driven off of the mains at 2134 to 3048-m (7,000 to 10,000-ft) intervals. The continuous mining sections are set up 133 x 610 m (600 x 2000 ft). Longwall sections are 259 x 1220 m (850 x 7000 ft). All of these mining sections are retreating uphill. Development is with continuous miners. A Marietta Borer miner is used for the main development work. These miners cut 4.1 m (13 ft 6 in.) wide and 2.1 m (7 ft) high, leaving an arch cut. Along with the arch, a 152.4-mm (6-in.) thick layer of roof coal is left in place to protect the roof from weathering. The combi¬nation of the self-supporting arch and the roof coal al¬lows the entries to be driven 30.5 m (100 ft) without bolting. Full bolting, however, is carried outby the last open crosscut. This bolting is done on 1.5 x 1.5-m (5 x 5-ft) centers using 1.5-m (5-ft) long roof bolts with tandem anchors and 152.4-mm (6-in.) steel washer plates. When needed, crib blocks with a 50.4-mm (2-in.) drill hole are used as supplemental supports. Three-hole steel channel with the ends curved down¬ward to conform to the borer arch may also be used. In the mining sections, a 14 BU loader is used be¬hind the Marietta miner to load two Torkar shuttle cars. These haul to Long-Airdox feeder breakers which load onto a 1.07-m (42-in.) wide conveyor belt. With the exception of the shuttle cars, which use 275-V d-c power, the face equipment operates on 550-V a-c power. The main power line is 7200 V ac. The same loading and hauling equipment is used with the Marietta Borer miner for driving both panel and development entries. In the retreat sections, the same equipment with the exception of the miner is utilized. Because of the advantage of a variable cutting hight, Jeffrey Heliminer ripper-type continuous miners were employed in these retreat sections. For longwall mining the first unit uses an Eickoff EDW 300-L double-drum ranging shearer. Drum di¬ameter is 1.69 m (66 in.) with a drum rotation speed of 45 rpm. The drum is equipped with 48 Carmet 34-L-1 bits. The 300-kW (400-hp) motor operates on 1000 V. Tramming of the shearer head is done through a hydraulically driven 26-mm wide chain. Maximum cutting speed is 7.93 m/min (26 fpm), and maximum tram speed is 12.8 m/min (42 fpm) with an average cutting speed of 3.66 m/min (12 fpm). Web cutting depth is 762 mm (30 in.) and the cutting height is 2.13 m (7 ft). The conveyor width is 686 mm (27 in.). It uses a single chain, 26 mm thick, with flights on 0.91-m (3-ft) spacing. The face conveyor speed is 64.3 m/min (211 fpm) when driven by two 112-kW (150-hp) 1000-V Louis Allis motors through torque convertors. The roof support used is Gullick Dobson chocks [6-legged 77.3 t (85 st) per leg, 463.6 t (510 st) total capacity] with double-acting leg jacks. The hydraulic pressure for the legs is 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), and the hydraulic pressure for rams is 6.8 MPa (1000 psi). The yield valves are set at 57.8 MPa (8500 psi). Each chock weighs 4.09 t (4.5 st). The stage loader is an Eickoff drive, with a 68-kW (90-hp), (00-V Reliance motor. A 26-mm thick single strand chain with flights on 0.6-m (2-ft) centers runs at 75.89 m/min (249 fpm). The stage loader is self-advancing and is connected to the belt tail piece with a special fifth wheel attachment so that the stage loader can advance and guide the tail piece. The hydraulic pressure for the roof support is supplied by two 45-kW (60-hp) Reliance motors op¬erating on 699 V, with 1.26 L/s (20 gpm) constant volume Gullick hydraulic pumps. Each pump services alternate chocks, with the two pressure lines connected at the tailgate by 25.4-mm (1-in.) hydraulic hoses, rated at 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The 6.8 MPa (1000 psi) pressure rams advance is supplied by a 45-kW (60-hp), 600-V Reliance motor and a 1.26-L/s (20-gpm) con¬stant volume Gullick pump. Return lines are 35.5-mm (1.4-in.) diam hydraulic hoses with rated capacity of 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The fluid used in the hydraulic system consists of 95% water and 5% Hy-chock fire resistant water soluble oil. Water is stored and mixed in a 6096-L (2000-gal) track-mounted tank and goes to a 655-L (180-gal) reservoir at the pump. The belt conveyor structure is 1.07 m (42 in.) wide with 0.47 rad (27°) idlers, bottom stands located on 3.05-m (10-ft) centers, top stands on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers, and is supported on a 19-mm (3/4-in.) diam

"Numerical methods used to study hydraulic fracturing in low permeability rock masses need to take into account the interaction between the progressive failure mechanism of the intact rock matrix and the pre-existing natural fractures. A fully coupled hydro-mechanical 3D discrete elements model dealing with such interaction is presented here. The ultimate objective is to grasp the role of the rock-matrix failure on the propagation of the main fluid driven fracture under different stress fields and pre-existing fracture orientations. The proposed method provides the spatiotemporal distribution of the induced crack events which can be tracked during the simulations, making possible the identification of the local mechanisms leading to macro-failure in the rock matrix or reactivation of the discontinuity planes. Fluid flow inside a fracture, pressurized crack and hydro-fracking experimental tests were simulated as part of the validation process of the model and, are presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONWith the expansion of shale gas and geothermal reservoirs exploitation, the technique of Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) has been widely used over the past years (McClure, 2012; Britt, 2012). Despite recent advances in micro-seismicity analysis or numerical modeling (Nagel et al., 2013), the way progressive failure of rocks affects the fluid flow depending on the in situ stress conditions or the rock heterogeneities is not fully controlled yet (Zoback, 2010).In this work we focused on setting up a three-dimensional discrete elements model to study fluid driven fractures propagation. The intact rock is modeled by a discrete element method (DEM) able to reproduce fracture initiation and propagation (Scholtès and Donzé, 2013, Garcia et al., 2013). The pre-existing fractures are explicitly modeled and can be individually defined or be part of a discrete fracture network (DFN) (Harthong et al., 2012). Their mechanical response is fully coupled with the fluid within a HM-DEM framework. The fluid flow and it’s interaction with the intact matrix and the pre-existing discontinuities is modeled through a Pore-scale Finite Volume (PFV) scheme specially enhanced for fractured rock modeling (Chareyre et al., 2012, Catalano et al., 2014) ."

O colaborador é o bem mais importante de uma empresa e para garantir a satisfação e a qualidade de vida do mesmo é essencial que haja um ambiente de trabalho seguro e confiável. O zero acidente com pessoas é uma busca constante e com a consolidação de diversas ações de forma preventiva foi possível alcançar as metas propostas. Com o início das atividades de produção da fábrica de Aços Longos da CSN, houve a necessidade estruturar todas as atividades da equipe de logística, área responsável pelas atividades de abastecimento, logística interna e escoamento da planta, de forma a garantir que os funcionários estivessem envolvidos com as demandas geradas pela organização. Para isso, foi elaborado plano de trabalho com objetivos claros ligados a gestão de segurança.

After the recent increase in catastrophic failures of tailings dams such as the Burmadinho, Brazil failure in 2019, the mining industry has actively engaged in the stabilisation of tailings dams. Most of the tailings storage facility (TSF) guidelines suggest a laborious action that can be facilitated through imaging by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Although UAVs are not unknown to most mining operations, automated rill detection through aerial image processing is a new concept. This study utilises images from sites in the U.S. and employs semantic segmentation with a UNet architecture to detect location and size of these rills. The developed model can be used as a tool for monitoring surface erosion of TSFs.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 8,445 acres of the 20,650-acre Tunnison Mountain Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate its identified mi nerd 1 resources. The study area is located in Lassen County, CA, about 8 miles northeast from Susanville. No mineral resources were identified in the study area based on literature, field observations, and sample results. No mines were operating in or near the study area in 1985, and no mines, prospects, or claims have been located in or within 1 mi le of the study area. The study area is underlain by Pliocene and Pleistocene volcanic units composed of basalt, andesite, rhyolite, and some pyroclastics. No metallic and only nonmetallic commodities are present in the study area. These included stone and sand and gravel. Although substantial volumes of basalt and andesite (stone) occur within the study area, no identified resources of these commodities were delineated. Sand and gravel is not economic because of small occurrence size and lack of local markets.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite is typically produced as a co-product in the copper ore flotation process. At the Rio Tinto Kennecott Concentrator (RTKC) in Copperton, Utah, the molybdenite is initially floated with copper sulfides and other value minerals producing a Cu-Mo concentrate. This is then separated in the molybdenum plant by depressing copper sulfides and pyrite and floating only molybdenite. The molybdenum plant in RTKC comprises the rougher circuit and several stages of cleaning to achieve a certain grade requirement of Mo. The rougher circuit is where the first stage of separation occurs. Cu sulfides and pyrite are depressed in the rougher circuit by adding NaSH under nitrogen and in the cleaner circuit by adding NaSH under air. The depression of Cu sulfides (and pyrite) by NaSH is related to the redox activity1. It is important therefore to maintain a reducing potential in the circuit in order to achieve effective Cu-Mo separation. If the rougher circuit is under air, like RTKC’s molybdenum cleaner circuits, it is harder to maintain the target redox potential because NaSH oxidizes rapidly in the presence of air thereby increasing NaSH consumption significantly. CU-MO SEPARATION AND ROLE OF PULP POTENTIAL The collector adsorption on copper sulfide minerals is through an electrochemical mechanism2. The collector changes the surface chemistry of the Cu mineral allowing it to float. Molybdenite, or MoS2, on the other hand, floats readily in the presence of a frother as it is naturally hydrophobic. Usually, hydrocarbon oil extenders such as diesel or burner oil are added to enhance Mo recovery. In order to effectively separate Cu from Mo, the collector complex on the copper surface needs to be destabilized or desorbed using a reducing agent such as NaSH or Nokes. As long as the circuit is under highly reducing conditions, the collector remains detached from the sulfide mineral surface allowing Cu sulfide depression. Therefore, it is important to measure the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) continually and maintain the reducing condition with addition of NaSH. For a given collector each mineral will have a characteristic potential or electrochemical window for flotation to occur3, therefore, it is necessary to reduce the potential outside of this window in order to effectively separate Cu and Fe sulfides from MoS2 minerals2. In RTKC plant, the target reducing condition is between -450 to -550 mV to effectively destabilize the collector and depress Cu and Fe minerals. Typically the dosage of NaSH used in the molybdenum plant could range from 6 to 30 gallons/min (gpm). The high dosage of NaSH could pose risk of H2S exposure. RTKC wanted to evaluate alternatives to NaSH in order to reduce its consumption and minimize risk of H2S gas generation."
