Resultados obtidos em testes de laboratório para diferentes ordens de produção e graus, a partir de testes de tração de chapas e tubos, juntamente com a quantificação microestrutural, proporcionam uma oportunidade para melhor compreender e quantificar a influência de cada fase sobre o comportamento das propriedades mecânicas do material. A presença de maiores quantidades de ferrita acicular/ferrita poligonal, em vez de ferrita poligonal/perlita, geram um aumento das propriedades mecânicas durante a formação do tubo, bem como uma forma bem definida do comportamento de tensão-deformação, o que é benéfico em aplicações de strain based design.

Mr. AllaW Gibb, of Mount Perry, Queensland, Australia, in an interesting and instructive paper,* describes fully the great difficulties metallurgists encounter in seeking to produce marketable copper by smelting refractory ores containing arsenic, antimony and bismuth. After reading this description, I prepared a paper for the Institute, which was, however, through a misunderstanding on my part, published in the San Francisco Mining and S'cie~ztiJic Press of April 4, 1903, after its acceptance by the Council, and without credit to the Institute. Consequently, it cannot be reprinted for the Transactions of the Institute; and I can only here summarize its contents and conclusions, referring the reader to the article above named for further particulars. In that article I omitted the col~sideration of bismuth, which we do not encounter in our smelting at Val Verde, and added lead and zinc, which Mr. Gibb had not discussed; and I undertook to shorn, by the record of a year's practice of the Val Verde Copper Co., Arizona, that copper-ores containing arsenic, antimony, lead and zinc may be successfully smelted, without preliminary roasting, in an ordinary blast-furnace with hotblast, making a normal slag, such as one would aim to make under ordinary conditions with cold-blast, so as to produce a marketable matte, containing not less than 45 per cent. of copper, free from arsenic and antimony, and below the limit in lead and zinc penalized by the refineries.

Continuous monitoring of mining impacts on the surrounding environment is a necessary sustainability criterion. Traditional monitoring approaches such as in situ sampling and airborne and satellite-based remote sensing have several limitations. Over the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have evolved into popular platforms for remote sensing. UAV-based remote sensing has been successfully applied in different sectors, including agriculture, forestry, urban environments and disaster management. However, the potential of UAVs for mine environmental monitoring has not yet been fully established. The Yellow Pine zinc-lead mine, situated about 3-1/2 miles northwest of Goodsprings, Clark County, Nev., was explored by core drilling during the fall of 1942 and the summer and fall of 1944 by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey. The Yellow Pine district was located in 1855. The original claims covering the Yellow Pine mine were located in the following years: Rover, 1892; Hilo, 1897; Bybee, 1900; Radio and Como, 1906. The mine was operated by the Yellow Pine Mining Co. from 1906 to 1929. This company was dissolved in 1935. At a later date, S. E. Yount and the Security First National Bank of Los Angeles, Calif., acquired ownership of the mine. Since 1939, the mine has been operated in a small way by leasers. Production has been at least 175,000 tons averaging about 10 percent lead and 25 percent zinc, with a gross yield of $5,785,174. Virtually all ore produced by this mine consisted chiefly of oxidized zinc and lead minerals and came from long, pipelike shoots in the 100-foot thick Yellow Pine limestone. Ore shoots are sharply defined; elsewhere, the limestone is nearly barren. Numerous faults cut the mine into blocks. Ore is now mined in an open stope, but in the past, large tonnages wore mined in stopes by square-set methods. Ore produced recently was shipped direct to smelters unprocessed; in the past, it was milled by gravity and produced separate lead and zinc concentrates.

The influence of high density (104 -105 A/cm2) electric current pulses (70 us duration) and continuous DC (~103 A/cm2) on the flow stress and ductility in tension of a high carbon steel wire were determined at 204°, 427° and 649°C. Electropulsing (100 pulses per second) with an effective current density of 100-200 A/cm2 gave a 10% enhancement in the uniform elongation of the wire at 204°C, but had no effect at 427°C and 649°C. In contrast, continuous DC either had no significant effect on the ductility or gave a decrease. The electropulsing per se decreased the flow stress only slightly at 204° and 427°C, but gave a significant decrease at 649°C. Continuous DC increased the flow stress at all three temperatures. The present results along with those by others suggest that the enhanced ductility by electropulsing and the reduction in flow stress may be further increased by raising the effective current density through increases in either the pulsing frequency, maximum current density of each pulse or pulse duration. This could conceivably increase the reduction per pass during wire drawing or the number of passes between anneals.

The authors have previously described a piezoelectric-based system to measure the dynamic pressure during actual detonation in the field. This technique is used in a water hammer test set-up where a donor detonator is fired first, with the pressure sensor and an acceptor electronic detonator placed underwater in a water tank, and maintained at a fixed distance away from the donor detonator. The functioning and timing of the acceptor detonator are captured using a customised microcontroller board called the water hammer timer. Using such water hammer testing, the effect of dynamic pressure was studied as a function of the magnitude of pressure during the electronic timing countdown. Data obtained indicate there is no significant impact in the timing of the electronic detonators in contrast to what has been reported in non-electric detonators.CITATION:Teowee, G, Solis, H, Papillon, B E and Ibarra, R, 2015. Sales of diesel fuel in the United States exceeded 150,000,000 barrels during 1953 and 140,000,000 barrels during 1952. Following are some figures on the distribution of this fuel computed from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ [ ] Deliveries of diesel type fuel from refineries totaled 91,170,000 barrels during the first six months of 1954, 3/ a corresponding figure for 1953 was 86,284,000 barrels.

As air-pollution regulations become increasingly more stringent, increased significance is being placed on the amount of sulfur present in coals used for steam generation. These regulations are aimed at minimizing the pollution of the atmosphere with noxious gases such as the sulfur oxides that are formed and emitted when coal is burned. Two meet these future requirements, a definite need exists to reduce the sulfur content of some of the coals used for steam generation. Reducing pyritic sulfur involves liberating the pyrite from the coal and then removing it. The specific gravity of pyrite is high (5.0) compared to that of coal (about 1.2, mineral-free), and standard coal-washing devices, such as wet concentrating tables, will efficiently remove pyrite particles larger than about 100 mesh. Particles below this size will be entrained in the table water and will be carried into the clean coal product. Techniques such as froth flotation are of little benefit for pyrite reduction because the flotation characteristics of pyrite are similar to those of coal.

The reserves of lead and zinc ores in the metalliferous district of Iglesias in south-western Sardinia are today estimated at about 30 million tons, grading from 4 to 10% Pb + Zn. Of these reserves, about 40% are in the mines owned by AMMI Sarda S.p.A. The working of these resources goes back to ancient times. Not infrequently, traces of old Roman workings and remains of ancient implements are come upon in the higher parts of some of the ore bodies. Exploitation of these mines on larger scale, however, dates from the middle of the 18th century. Initially, the more accessible zones of the ore bodies and the richer ores were worked - the galena and the rich oxidized ores (calamine* with 25-35% Zn), which were often found in large masses, the enormous empty cavities of which still remain. "The inverse slope method (ISM) was applied to reinterpret vertical electrical soundings (VES) data from pits at the Al-Sharquieh phosphate mine, in order to demonstrate applicability and suitability of the ISM for interpreting VES data from sedimentary phosphatic environments. The ISM overcomes limitations of the curve matching method and the complexity of lithological sections. The ISM geo-electrical interpretation results correlated well with lithologies of the pits. This method characterized resistivity and thickness of the phosphatic layer, and identified favourable phosphate-prospecting areas using the newly developed thickness/depth parameter. The ISM is recommended for interpreting VES measurements in similar sedimentary phosphatic regions.RÉSUMÉ La méthode d’inversion de la pente (ISM) a été utilisée pour réinterpréter les données de sondages électriques verticaux (VES) effectués dans des puits de la mine de phosphate Al-Sharquieh, afin de démontrer l’applicabilité et la pertinence de cette méthode pour interpréter les données VES dans des environnements de sédimentation de phosphates. Cette méthode (ISM) surmonte les limitations de la méthode de comparaison de courbes et la complexité des sections lithologiques. Les résultats de l’interprétation géoélectrique ISM correspondaient bien aux lithologies des puits. Elle a permis de caractériser la résistivité et l’épaisseur de la couche phosphatique et d’identifier les secteurs favorables à la prospection pour le phosphate en utilisant le paramètre nouvellement développé épaisseur/profondeur. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the interaction of longwall shield supports and adjacent strata at the Meigs No. 31 Mine in southeastern Ohio. Twenty-three legs of twenty shields at midface were instrumented with pressure transducers and monitored for 11 weeks. During the project, leg setting pressures were reduced twice to determine the effect of setting pressure on shield-strata interaction. No correlation was observed between setting pressure and leg loading rates. The shield loading profiles were consistent with a model in which the roof consists of two zones, a thin immediate roof loading the shields well below the typical setting force and a main roof zone essentially supported by the coal and gob and loading shields through its convergence. This model was used to develop an equation for estimating average loading rates at the site. The only variable of the equation is time, and the equation consists of an exponential term to account for the immediate roof loading and a linear term to account for main roof loading. The equation gave good correlation with average loading rates, but the variation in loading from cycle to cycle was too great for the equation to give good predictions of individual cycle loading rates.

The sulfur in high-sulfur bauxite not only pollutes the environment but also harms alumina production. This study investigated the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite by adding Zn or ZnO during the Bayer process. The results showed that the different valence sulfur (S2−, S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) in sodium aluminate solution can be effectively removed by adding Zn during the digestion process. Adding ZnO removes the S2− in liquor, but the other sulfur compounds (S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) are not affected. The mechanism of sulfur removal has been elucidated, where the S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2− are first reduced to S2−, and after adding Zn, the S2− enters into red mud in the form of ZnS. The ZnO then reacts with S2− to generate the ZnS that enters into red mud. Thus, this is a new and effective method of sulfur removal by adding Zn during the digestion process. The results shed light on the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite during alumina production.

"INTRODUCTIONInco Ltd. has ten operating mines in the Sudbury district. Over the last ten years mining methods have changed at Inco with special emphasis on the introduction of bulk mining replacing conventional mechanized cut-and-f ill and undercut-and-fill methods. At the same time, the technology and size of LH D equipment has also progressed to meet the demands of bulk mining. This paper will concentrate on various aspects of the introduction and operation of electric LHD equipment a t Inco Limited, Ontario Division. BackgroundInco Limited received its first electric 2 cu. yd capacity LHD in July 1975 at Creighton Mine. The unit was tested pulling shrinkage stope muck and then was moved to a mechanized cut and- fill complex on 6600 Level. The electric scooptram received quick acceptance from the operators, due to its quiet operation and low heat generation, in a relatively hot operating environment. Although there are only two of these units operating a t present, this initial favourable experience, both in cost and efficiency, led to the development and purchase of electric scooptrams of the 5 cu. yd size. There are currently eleven 5 cu . yd electric LHDs in operation.The most recent development a t Inco is the move to yet larger electric LHDs in the 8 cu. yd size. The first electric ""Eight"" has now been in operation at Copper Cliff South Mine for over a year. This unit has the distinction of being the first one of its kind in service in North America. At the time of writing, there were ten 8 cu. yd electric ma chines operating in Inco's Ontario Division Mines, with three on order."

Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious. In addition to agricultural and building lime the sales statistics compiled annually by the Bureau of Mines include lime sold to the steel and other metallurgical industries as refractory and fluxing material, as well as that used by paper mills, glass works, tanneries, and water-treatment plants. These major uses normally consume about 86 percent of the domestic sales. The remaining 14 percent includes lime sold for use in the manufacture of alcohol, alkalies, bleaches, calcium acetate, calcium carbide, coke gas and byproducts, glue, insecticides, oils and fats, paints, and rubber, in the refining of salt, in the manufacture of sand-lime and slag brick, in the disposal of sewage and garbage, in the manufacture of silica brick, in the refining of sugar, in the textile industries, and in wood distillation. Many other uses are also known for which complete sales data are not available.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effectiveness of long holes drilled in solid virgin coal in degasifying an area of the Pittsburgh coalbed showing that horizontal holes drilled into a virgin coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove methane gas in commercial quantities from the Pittsburgh coalbed. The in situ pressure at a depth of 214 feet into the coalbed and the average gas and water flows from the five degasification holes were 3 lb/in2 gage and 860,000 ft3/d and 1.7 gal/min, respectively. On June 19, 1975, after 593 days of degasification, a compressor was installed and pipeline quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of June 1, 1976, after 1,022 days of degasification, over 753 million cubic feet of gas had been drained and 117 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company for use in the local community of Wadestown, W. Va. The gas drained to date is six times the gas estimated to be in the area subtended by the holes. Methane emissions at the working face of 1 West mains, Federal No.2 mine has been reduced by 50 pct, proving the value of methane drainage by horizontal degasification holes drilled from shaft bottoms ahead of mining.

Por ello, se requiere un análisis económico cuidadoso antes de decidir la instalación de cada planta en los países en América Latina y en el que los institutos geológicos y del carbón de los países de Latinoamerica inicien o continuen, según sea el caso, con la exploración de los recursos carboníferos para determinar reservas, incluyendo las de los carbones hidrocarburables.

The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

Underwater intervention operations have been supported by robotic systems such as remotely operated vehicles (ROV) for a long time. In particular challenging scenarios such as the deep sea, the use of ROV systems for environment awareness is in fact the main tool of choice. With the technical advances in autonomous robotics, there is an increased effort in substitute ROVs whenever possible for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). These systems don't have tether and thus provide large advantages from the operations and logistic point of view. However the limited options for underwater communications render them impracticable for many tasks were real time environment awareness and direct human control is needed. Emerging applications in underwater mining, both at sea [1] and in inland flooded mines [2] pose additional requirements in terms of operation support needs and environment restrictions. Two main tasks are to be addressed by assisting robots in these underwater mining operations: providing adequate environment awareness for human operators and obtain precise realtime 3D environment modelling (particularly relevant for the mining planning). The use of ROVs with umbilical cable, has in this case large limitations due to the nature of the mining cutting (performed by dedicated systems) that limit manoeuvrability and pose high risk of cutting the cable or damaging the vehicle. In this paper we present EVA (Exploration VAMOS AUV) an innovative hybrid ROV/AUV system developed for operations support in inland underwater mining operations. This robot is always operated without tether, and the can be used in a wireless ROV tele-operation mode using very short range high bandwidth underwater communication systems and in autonomous AUV mode.
