"Coal fly-ash(CFA) from thermal power plants is rich in Al2O3, which has great potential as an alternative resource for alumina production. In this work, Alz03 contained in the coal fly-ash was extracted using an acid sintering-leaching process. This process was enhanced by aid of power ultrasound during the leaching. The recovery rate of Al2O3 was increased with ultrasound, compared with the similar process without ultrasound under the identical operation conditions. Leaching temperature can be lowered by about 10-l5°C and the processing time reduced by about 50%. The process kinetics were investigated in details for a better understanding of the fundamentals on the effects of power ultrasound. The obtained results demonstrate the potential application in reducing processing energy and increasing production rate.Introduction Coal fly ash is a typical solid waste generated from coal combustion in thermal power station. Vast amount of CF A accumulation lead to serious environmental problems such as air and water pollution, cropland occupation, radioactive contamination, etc. However, CFA is rich in Al2O3 and SiO2 content, so that it has a potential use as recourses for alumina and silica production [1]. Aluminum industry, especially in China, has made a rapid expansion in recent years accompanying with a large amount of bauxite consumption, resulting a urgent demand to develop secondary alumina resources like CF A to maintain a sustainable development of aluminum industry that faces grim challenge [2].Acid leaching is an efficient technology to use in alumina extraction from CF A. Since the particle of CF A is not naturally existed mineral but was formed in molten state at high temperature, the internal Al-O-Si bonds are so strong to separate alumina from the ash particle. Because of this reason, the direct acid leaching [3-6] operated at ambient temperature has low extraction efficiency, approximate 30% to 40%, which is attributed to self inhibition effect from CaS04 generated by reaction between CaO and H2S04 [7-8]. High pressure leaching can efficiently decompose mullite to release A12O 3 content in the fly ash particles, but this requires autoclave material having strong acid corrosion resistance, high temperature (100°C-300°C) and pressure (1.0MPa-2.SMPa) resistance while its operating security is low and its acid consumption is large [9]. Concentrated acid boil process is conducted at near acid boiling point (200 °C - 300 °C) in 4 mouth flask wrapped by electric heating jacket with high mass ratio of acid and ash to achieve high Al203 recovery rate from CFA. Its disadvantages are similar to the high pressure leaching technology except no-pressure, and also the operating solution at nearly boiling point acid may easily spill and splash with additional acid loss and potential safety hazard [10]."

Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

This paper will focus on three aspects of this technical program: Reducing the cost of resource expansion through smart use of low cost, surface target generation techniques; Improving the rate of uranium leaching and solution stability (gypsum, jarosite) through lixiviant chemistry modifications; and Development of an ion exchange (IX) process to increase production capacity, and integration of IX and the current solvent extraction circuit with the existing uranium precipitation and product preparation circuits.

A SURVEY of the Mesabi Range iron-ore industry demonstrates that a satisfactory degree of technical progress has been achieved in the last fifteen years. This advance has not been made over a uniform front, but, by salients and bays, according to the different initial positions, economic and technical, of the component producing companies. The producers endowed with rich ore have in general, because of natural advantages, progressed more slowly than their neighbors with leaner properties. The advance has been made step by step all along the line -blasting, loading, hauling and concentrating-and without the benefit of radical innovation. There have been, for instance, no such parallel discoveries in iron ore as leaching and flotation in copper. The much lower unit price of iron operates, of course, to bar the application of these and other practices developed for the higher-priced metals. There exists, however, a radically new concentration process whose technology is well worked out and which may become economically operative in the not too distant future; this, as so often happens in engineering advance, because of recent developments in an entirely unrelated field. First, however, let me devote a paragraph or two to the more important economies effected in mining.

The Hill is a cyanidation plant with flotation and roasting. The grinding and treatment have at the present time a capacity of 1400 tons of ore per day and the precipitation has a capacity of 6000 tons per day. The ore is delivered by a 36" conveyor belt and tripper to 8 mill bins having a capacity of 6000 tons. The ore from these bins is discharged onto 20" gathering conveyor belts which are regulated with p.i.v. speed changers to control the belt weight. A weightometer determines the tonnage milled. The feed enters the 8' x 12' rod mill through a rubber lined chute and the product is discharged through a launder to a 7' rake classifier in closed circuit with 10' by 6' hardinge ball mill. Lime slurry is added at the rake classifier to give a strength of .30#/ton. The classifier sand is fed into the ball mill with a scoop feeder and the mill discharge flows in a launder back to the classifier. The classifier overflow is pumped to a 24' by 12' bowl classifier in closed circuit with a 8' by 15' regrind mill. The bowl classifier sands are fed to this mill and the mill discharge is pumped back to the bowl. The bowl overflow at 8% - 200 mesh is the final product from the grinding circuit.

Card-gap and projectile impact sensitivity data are presented for a wide variety of explosive compositions tested at the Bureau of Mines in more or less standard test geometries. The results of both tests are in good agreement in that they provide the same sensitivity ordering for different subclasses of explosives. Least sensitive were homogeneous liquids that did not exhibit a tendency to undergo low-velocity detonation, ammonium nitrate-fuel oil, and most cast military explosives. Of intermediate sensitivity were pressed and powdered military explosives, cast pentolite, permissible and non- permissible water-based explosives, and one commercial two-component explosive. The most sensitive were permissible and nonpermissible dynamites and explosives susceptible to low-velocity detonation.

Comminution continues to be the most capital-intensive unit operation in mineral processing. The fundamental purpose of comminution is to liberate the valuable minerals so that they can be economically concentrated into saleable products. Declining ore quality characterised by lower grade and increased complexity requires significant energy consumption for comminution. Low-grade magnetite ores are typically fine-grained and require fine to ultra-fine grinding (P80 ~ 30 - 40 µm) to enhance its liberation from the typically siliceous gangue matrix. Historically, this has been achieved using multi-stage crushing and grinding technologies, which require high energy consumption with low energy efficiency. This motivated innovations in energy efficient technologies for comminution. Such technology has been developed in the IMPTEC super-fine crusher. It is an innovative, dry (with the potential to be operated wet), media-free, energy efficient crusher that can to reduce 10 mm feed particles to 19 – 30 µm with very low recycle loads. In this study, the mineralogical and physicochemical characteristics of crushed magnetite ore using the IMPTEC super-fine crusher have been investigated in comparison with those of rod milling. The super-fine crusher generated higher liberated magnetite minerals in the – 300 + 212 µm and < 45 µm size fractions compared to rod mill. Both comminution devices generated large low-grade hematite and goethite middlings. However, the rod mill produced higher locked/unliberated hematite and goethite compared to that of the super-fine crusher. Quartz mineral had the highest liberation irrespective of the comminution device used. The super-fine crusher generated higher entrapment of other minerals within the silica matrix compared to the rod mill. The breakage mechanism of the super-fine crusher which is predominantly through high compression with shear, generated improved mineral liberation in the coarse size fractions compared to the predominant abrasion and attrition breakage mechanisms of rod milling. The higher mineral liberation generated by the rod mill is potentially due to the prolonged batch milling of the ore compared to the single-pass open circuit of the super-fine crusher.CITATION:Baawuah, E, Kelsey, C, Kelly, J R, Addai-Mensah, J and Skinner, W, 2018. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program was used to model buoyancy induced Product-Of-Combustion (POC) spread from experimental fires in the National Institute For Occupational Safety And Health (NOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), safety research coal mine. In one application, the CFD program was used to predict spread from fires in an entry under zero airflow conditions. At a location, 0.41 m below the entry's roof at a distance of 30 m from the fire, the measured smoke spread rates were 0.093 and 0.23 m/s for a 30 and a 296 kw fire, respectively. The CFD program predicted spread rates of 0.15 and 0.26 m/s based upon the measured fire heat production rates. Based upon a computation with [c3h3] as the hydrocarbon fuel, a predicted 5 PPM co alert time of 70 s at a distance of 30 m from the fire is to be compared with the measured alert time of 148 s. In a second application, the CFD program was used to analyze smoke flow reversal conditions, and the results were compared with visual observations of smoke reversal for 12 diesel fuel fires. The CFD predictions were in qualitative agreement with visual observations of smoke reversal.

Selective flocculation enables the production of high-brightness kaolin products from kaolin ore once considered too poor in quality for beneficiation into paper-coating pigments. Anatase, Ti(1-X)FeXO2, with X = 0 to 0.05, is a common iron-bearing impurity in sedimentary kaolin that can be unresponsive to kaolin beneficiation processes, such as magnetic separation, due to its extremely fine particle size (<0.3 µm), or chemical bleaching, because of its chemical stability. Described here are selective flocculation technologies that separate anatase by flocculating anatase or flocculating kaolinite from dispersed slurries. Applying the advances in the chemical and mechanical dispersion of ultrafine particles and the selective aggregation of kaolinite or anatase particles have resulted in the selective flocculation processes practiced today that have increased process recoveries from those technologies practiced beginning in the 1960s.

Electric arc furnace dust or EAF dust is considered as a hazardous waste but contains a significant amount of economically attractive non-ferrous metals especially zinc as zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) and zincite (ZnO). The hydrometallurgical process is one alternative choice because it has the advantage of low energy consumption. The leaching of ZnO from the dust is very easy. However, the complex major zinc compound in EAF dust is ZnFe2O4, which is very stable and insoluble in alkaline or acidic media under delicate conditions, and causes the low zinc recovery yield by hydrometallurgical process. Moreover, halogens and heavy metals in the dust are also problematic. In order to develop a new effective EAF dust treatment process, the authors have proposed "CaO addition process" as pre-dust treatment to transform all of ZnFe2O4 in the EAF dust to ZnO and Ca2Fe2O5. In this study, the selective zinc leaching from the CaO treated EAF dust with NaOH and NH4Cl solutions was carried out. The effect of temperature, reaction time and solute concentration were systematically investigated. All of zinc in CaO treated EAF dust was successfully leached into both solutions.

"The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing and the Nisto deposit are located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin. They are probably unconformity-related. These occurrences tend to be small. The Fond-du-Lac and Maurice Bay deposits are the largest and contain 450,000 kg and 650,000 kg of U10 8 respectively.Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral of all the occurrences, except at Middle Lake where autunite predominates. A II of the deposits are overlain and partially hosted by the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group, except the Nisto deposit which is entirely within basement rocks, and the Maurice Bay deposit which is partially within the basement and overlying the Fair Point Formation of the Athabasca Group.The North Rim deposits are considered to be genetically similar to the other unconformity-type deposits found in northern Saskatchewan. It is suggested that a mechanical concentration of uranium may have occurred in heavy mineral beach sand type placers. The stability of the uranium minerals may have been enhanced by special local conditions. The fossil placers, after hydrothermal alteration and enrichment, would form the apparently ""rootless"" occurrences of uranium found totally within the sandstones above the unconformity.IntroductionAt least five deposits and showings and one train of mineralized glacial erratics of unknown provenance have been located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin from Maurice Bay in the west to Black Lake in the east. Distributed over a distance of 250 km, (Fig. l), they occur near the edge of the Basin, and are probably unconformity-related. The following have been identified from west to east (Fig. 2): The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Isle Brochet train, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing, and the Nisto deposit."

Nickel alloys containing approximately 0.5, 2.0, and 6.0 at. pct of Os, Pd, Ru, and Rh were Prepared by vacuum melting. Tension tests were carried out at 25°, 500°, 800°, and 1000°C; stress-rupture tests were carried out at 650° and 800°C. The room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength, as well as the stress-rupture life, increased for the same atomic percent in the order palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium. The ductility decreased with increasing concentration or temperature for a given concentration. The results are discussed in terms of solid-solution theory. BOTH solid-solution strengthening and weakening have been observed in alloys. The simple rules which have been suggested to explain alloy strengthening are subject to several exceptions and deviations based on atom size and valency effects. The purpose of the present investigation was to extend the knowledge of the effect of solid-solution alloying on the mechanical properties of several Ni-Pt group metal alloys at room and elevated temperatures. The platinum group metals, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, and palladium were chosen as the solute elements because of their different valencies and atom sizes. Nickel was chosen as the base material because of the large amount of previous literature available on nickel alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Grade A Carbonyl nickel powder having the following composition: C, 0.07 pct; Fe, 0.013 pct; Mn, 0.0005 pct; Si, 0.016 pct; Mg, 0.0003 pct; S, 0.003 pct, was purchased from the International Nickel Co. The platinum-group metal powders were purchased from A. D. Mackay Co. The powders were weighed, cone-blended for 4 hr, and vacuum-melted into 1-in.-diam billets, approximately 2 in. long. The ingots were homogenized for 5 hr at 1800°F before being extruded into 1/4-in. rods at 2100°F. The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values were not significantly different than that of the as-received nickel. All alloys were single phase. The lattice parameter of each alloy after the heat treatment described below is also included in Table I. Each alloy was annealed at 2200°F for 1 hr and air-quenched to comparable grain sizes (ASTM G.S. No. 4-5). The rods were then machined into test samples 0.160-in. diam and 0.750-in. gage length. Tension testing was carried out in an In-stron tension-testing machine at a strain rate of 0.02 in. per in. per min. An extensometer was used to determine the room-temperature yield stress. Stress-rupture testing was carried out in an Arc Weld stress-rupture unit. All testing was performed in air. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties. The 0.2 pct yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation for all alloys tested at room temperature are plotted as a function of atomic percent solute element in Fig. 1. The ultimate tensile strength for the same atomic percent increases in the order palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium. The yield strength at low concentrations, -0.5 at. pct, increases in the order osmium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium. A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Institute in 1924. I endeavoured to present the position held by the mineral industries in the commercial life of this country. The facts and figures were presented at that time in a detached way. Since then, however, I have made some attempt to analyze them in order to determine the causes for that position and to draw some conclusions as to the future of the mining industry. As everyone knows, our trade figures are very often used in political discussion, especially in discussion of tariff policy. It would be entirely out of order for me to say anything touching the tariff issue and I want to have it clearly understood that, in my opinion, the material I am about to present contains not a single statement or conclusion which anyone would be warranted in using as an argument for either a lower or a higher tariff or for tariff changes of any kind. As a starting point, let me re-state, very sketchily, Canada&apos;s general situation in external trade. In the last calendar year, 1924, we sold Canadian merchandise of all kinds to other countries to the value of $1,045,000,000 in round figures. Our purchases abroad reached about $893,000,000. Thus our sales exceeded our purchases by roughly $152,000,000. In other words, we had what is known as a &apos;favourable balance of trade&apos; - one of the biggest favourable balances we have ever had in our history. The proceeds of our sales of Canadian products enabled us to meet the bills for all our purchases of foreign commodities and, in addition, placed a large surplus to our credit with which to offset our interest charges and other obligations abroad.

The Spitzenberg Tunnel is a 600 m (1,970 ft) long twin tube motorway tunnel on Germany’s Autobahn A44 between Kassel and Eisenach. Since flexibility was considered to be very important in the continuously changing geological conditions, NATM was chosen as the construction method. When passing an old quarry with only 1,80 m (6 ft) of overburden, the excavation works became extraordinarily challenging. This paper not only describes the special methods, like double sidewall drifts and pipe umbrellas applied in this zone but also highlights the cooperation between the parties involved, which in combination made the project a joint success.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

Three years ago, when Sun Energy Development Co. (Sunedo) dedicated its Cordero mine in Wyoming, the company noted that its decision to venture into the coal industry was prompted by the need for domestic energy self-sufficiency. Now, as the energy situation assumes crisis proportions and the cry For coal intensifies, Sunedoo has begun a $21 million expansion program that will double the mine&apos;s productive capacity by the mid-1980s. When the Cordero come was originally conceived, Sunedoo obtained permission from permitting authorities to produce up to 11 million t/y (12 million stpy) of coal. But seeing opportunities in the coal market, Sunedoo returned to the agencies in 1976 and came away with permission to produce 22 million t/y (24 million stpy). Of that total permitted capacity, Cordero is expected to produce about 3.6 million tons (4 million st) this year.
