THE literature on refractories, although fairly extensive, is so scattered through books and periodicals as to be difficult of access to the general reader and most of the individual papers serve merely to illuminate some particular phase of the industry. Two general treatises by American authors8.16 are available, also the somewhat older works by a well-known British authority, 12,13 but these make their appeal to the technically minded ceramic engineer. Another small group of publications deals with the use of refractories, mainly in the iron and steel industry.1, 3,5,6,11,15 Raw materials utilized by the refractories industry have been covered by sundry books and articles. For the relatively nontechnical reader and economist, however, there appears to be no single review that purports to describe the industry as a whole. Furnace linings and other products that are classed as "refractories" are designed primarily to withstand high temperatures but this important property is by no means the only requirement; a suitable refractory material must likewise withstand slagging (chemical' action), abrasion (physical wear), and spalling, as well as the various other stresses and physical phenomena induced by heat, of which softening or incipient melting is only one phase. Nevertheless, subject to these highly practical considerations, the definition of a refractory material is based upon temperature resistance. Broadly speaking, any material that shows obvious signs of fusion after being heated slowly to 1500°C (2732°F) cannot be classified as a refractory material. The characteristic properties and requirements of refractory materials are conveniently summarized in Fig 1, prepared on the American Refractories Institute Fellowship at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Most of the factors of service and properties of refractories given in this chart are interdependent and are greatly affected in degree by the functions of temperature and time. The factors in the chart are believed to cover the commoner questions.

INVESTIGATION of the methods of analyses for magnetite and ilmenite in the Otanmaki iron-titanium ore and respective mill products has resulted in certain improvements in the methods conventionally employed. The outcome of the investigations is summarized as follows: 1—Development of a diamond-drill core analyser for the determination of magnetic susceptibility of drill cores containing magnetic minerals. 2—Development of a magnetite-ilmenite analyser for pulverized products. 3—Development of a potentiometric method of chemical analysis for the determination of iron, vanadium, and titanium in succeeding steps from one test sample. 4—Proposal for a continuous and automatic magnetite assay method. Diamond-Drill Core Analyser The conventional method of assaying diamond-drill cores consists of splitting the cores, pulverizing them and running chemical analyses on representative samples. The physical properties of magnetic minerals, however, offer an entirely different approach to obtain similar final result by the measurement of respective magnetic susceptibilities in a properly designed instrument. This instrument is shown in Fig. 1. Essentially it consists of a magnetic unit, A, and of a meter unit, B. On top of A is a slot where a piece of diamond-drill core C is visible. The magnitude of disturbance in the original magnetic field caused by the magnetic minerals in the drill core can be observed from the microammeter. This reading is a function of the combined susceptibilities of all magnetic grains in the magnetic field. The magnetic unit is built of E-sheets of a shell transformer, as shown in Fig. 2. The primary coil and two identical secondary coils are wound around the central leg and end legs, respectively. The drill core under examination is placed into one of the air gaps as shown in Fig. 2. The number of ampere-turns of primary coil excited by 50 or 60-cycle ac give a maximum induction of about 600 gauss in the air gaps. The secondary coils are connected in series in the opposite direction. Thus their voltages compensate each other if no drill core exists in the air gap or if the susceptibility of the drill core is equal to zero. As soon as the susceptibility becomes greater than zero, the balance of the magnetic circuit is disturbed, resulting in increased voltage in the terminals of coil 1 and in a respective decrease of voltage in the terminals of coil 2. The voltage difference thus produced is a function of the effective susceptibility of the drill core. If the magnetic grains in the drill core are unevenly distributed, the voltage difference varies as the core is rotated around its own axis. The voltage difference is measured with a Bren-tan0 tube voltmeter. If extreme sensitiveness is desired, the established symmetry of the magnetic circuit does not allow reduction of the 0-voltage difference far enough. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats; Donetskugol and Tulaugol. In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting and control, explosion suppression and control measures, and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miners' attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. It would be helpful to briefly review Soviet coal production statistics for comparison purposes with the U.S., and for the purpose of referencing some of the delegation findings mentioned in this report. For an excellent, comprehensive picture of Soviet coal production and other related fuel statistics, the reader is referred to Strishkov's, et d. report.1 Strishkov's estimates agree with the numbers given us by Coal Ministry officials except in clean coal tonnage. The figures of 604 million mt of clean coal out of a total production of 655 tons raw coal in 1972 is much higher than Strishkov's estimate of 375 million mt clean coal.

Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.

Demonstration projects using hydrogen as a fuel are becoming very common. Often these projects rely on project-specific risk evaluations to support project safety decisions. This is necessary because regulations, codes, and standards (hereafter referred to as standards) are just being developed. This paper will review some of the approaches being used in these evolving standards, and techniques which demonstration projects can implement to bridge the gap between current requirements and stakeholder desires. Many of the evolving standards for hydrogen-fuel use performance-based language, which establishes minimum performance and safety objectives, as compared with prescriptive-based language that prescribes specific design solutions. This is being done for several reasons including: (1) concern that establishing specific design solutions too early will stifle invention, (2) sparse performance data necessary to support selection of design approaches, and (3) a risk-adverse public which is unwilling to accept losses that were incurred in developing previous prescriptive design standards. The evolving standards often contain words such as: ?The manufacturer shall implement the measures and provide the information necessary to minimize the risk of endangering a person?s safety or health.? This typically implies that the manufacturer or project manager must produce and document an acceptable level of risk. If accomplished using comprehensive and systematic process the demonstration project risk assessment can ease the transition to widespread commercialization. An approach to adequately evaluate and document the safety risk will be presented.

Laboratory experiments, using a thermal plasma reactor, have been performed to evaluate: the conversion of ilmenite to TiC or TiC-Fe and the conversion of zircon to ZrC or ZrC-SiC. Results are examined and possible processing routes are identified.

Cobalt is critical for the green energy transition, yet the mineralogical distribution and the mechanisms of concentration of Co in different types of hydrothermal ore deposits remain poorly constrained. Here we document ore mineral assemblages from the active Fåvne and Loki’s Castle seafloor massive sulfide deposits located along the Mohns Ridge in the Norwegian Sea, and determine their whole-rock and mineral chemical compositions with a special emphasis on Co.

A constitution diagram for the system Mo-Ir has been determined. The maximum solubility of iridium in molybdenum is 16 at. pct at 2110ºC and decreases to less than 5 at. pct at 1500°C. The solubility of molybdenum in iridium is 22 at. pct. Three intermediate phases appear in the system: 8 MoJr, having the p-tungsten structure; a phase, a cornplex tetragonal structure; and the hcp ? phase. Metallography, melting point determinations, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and electron micro-probe unalyses were employed in establishing the diagram. PREVIOUS to the present investigation, the intermediate phases in the Mo-Ir system were identified, but no detailed account of the phase diagram has been reported in the literature. Raub1 investigated alloys of Mo-Ir over an extensive range of composition between the temperatures of 800º and 1600°C. The in-termetallic compound MosIr was found to exist with nearly pure molybdenum, as the solubility of iridium in molybdenum was not detectable parametrically in this temperature range. MO3Ir was found to be iso-morphic with a ß-tungsten type structure, having a parameter of 4.959Å. An intermediate hcp phase, designated as the ? phase, ranged in composition from 52 to 78.5 at. pct at 800ºC, and from 41 to 78.5 at. pct Ir at 1200°C. Parameters noted for the ? phase were as follows: at 42.7 at. pct Ir, a = 2.771i0, c = 4.4366, c/a = 1.601; at 78.5 at. pct Ir, a = 2.736A, c = 4.378A, c/a = 1.600. Molybdenum was found to be soluble in iridium up to 16.5 at. pct Mo (83.5 at. pct Irj, with the parameter of iridium increasing to 3.845A at the solubility limit. Knapton,2 who investigated alloys between 15 and 85 at. pct Ir, essentially agreed with Raub's data, but, in addition, found a a phase in as-melted alloys near 25 at. pcto Ir. The oaphase lattice parameters were a = 9.64Å, c = 4.96Å, c/a = 0.515. The a phase was replaced by the 8 -tungsten phase on annealing at 1600°C. Knapton concluded that the a was stable only at elevated temperatures, and placed the composition of the a phase at approximately 30 at. pct Ir. The intermetallic compound Mo3Ir, with a lattice parameter of 4.965A, was included among the 8-tungsten structures reported by ~eller.' Matthias and Corenzwit,4 and Bucke15 studied the superconducting nature of MosIr, and reported a superconducting transition temperature of 8.$K. The present investigation describes the phase relationships in the Mo-Ir alloy system determined by melting point measurements, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, and metallography. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys for the determination of the phase diagram were prepared from powders. Commercial 99.9 pct Mo from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and 99.9 pct Ir powder from J. Bishop and Co. Platinum Works were used. The powders were weighed to nominal compositions, mixed, and then pressed, without binder, into compacts weighing 4 to 6 g. These were presintered in uacuo between 1200' and 1400°C for 1 hr, to reduce the degree of spattering during subsequent arc-melting. The compacts were arc-melted in a nonconsumable tungsten electrode furnace six times on alternate sides on a water-cooled copper hearth in an atmosphere of zirconium-getter ed argon at 500 mm of mercury pressure. In almost all cases, this procedure yielded buttons of satisfactory homogeneity. The composition of all melted buttons were confirmed by X-ray fluorescent analysis using the experimentally determined ratio of the iridium La1 line intensity to that of the molybdenum Ka1 line as a function of composition. In this determination four alloys analyzed by wet chemical methods were used as standards. An uncertainty range of ±1 at. pct has been attributed to all indicated compositions. All heat treatments and solidus measurements were carried out in tantalum resistance heating elements in vacuum conditions of 10-4 to 10-5 mm of mercury. A detailed account of this procedure has been reported by Schwarzkopf and Brophy.8 In the heat treatment and solidus measurements of iridium-rich alloys (50 at. pct Ir or greater), a tungsten lining was inserted into the tantalum resistance heating element because of a eutectic reaction which occurs between iridium and tantalum at 1948ºc.7 Heat treatments and solidus measurements carried out at compositions less than 40 at. pct Ir both with and without tungsten linings within the resistance

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

Cross-hole sonic logging (CSL) has become the universal standard, nondestructive testing (NDT) method used in evaluating the integrity of foundation structures to maintain quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of transportation facilities and infrastructures. Tomography, based on three-dimensional cross-hole sonic logging data processing technology, offers an improvement over the techniques currently used to characterize the interior structure of drilled shafts. The underlying concept for seismic tomography is based on the principle that acoustic waves propagate at different velocities through different types of material or the same material with different physical properties. Three-dimensional velocity tomographic images provide greater detail of the interior structure, making defects easier to classify with respect to size and location within the foundation structure. By accurately classifying these defects, an engineer has the information necessary to accurately assess whether these structures meet the applicable design requirements, allowing them to repair or replace inadequate foundation structures. The end result is that the foundation structures will meet the safety and service life requirements for their project. This paper will present applications of seismic tomography, illustrating how seismic imaging can provide accurate information regarding the integrity of foundation structures.

INE operators have a choice of several classi- fications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. These are factors which affect the optimum operational efficiency of a loader. The conditions which determine loader choice are: Height of Vein—The main limitation to the use of a loading machine is the height to which the vein is mined; i.e. a loader cannot be higher than the place in which it is to work unless rock is taken. Since there are several low vein loaders being developed and successfully applied, this does not appear to be a requisite of an efficient mining operation. The maximum useable height of a loader should be equal to the working seam thickness less a working clearance for travel and operation. A—Working seam thickness = B—Artificial roof support thickness = C—Safe headroom below support = (generally about 6 in.) D—Height of roadway = E—Total of B + C f D =_______________________ A—E = maximum loader height F—Distance from top of roadway to bottom of roof support = G—-Height of loader's coal or ore line (see Table I) = H—Difference between F and G = Size of largest broken particle + a safety factor of 2 to 3 in. H is a loadability factor and is important because the clearance over the top of the conveyor chain to the roof or roof support must be greater than the largest broken particle or else the particle and/or the conveyor chain may be broken. From this standpoint it might be desirable to use a lower height machine even though it may have a smaller capacity, though this is warranted only when increased lump realization offsets lower man-day and machine pro- duction rates. Ivan Given has stated, "Loading should not be handicapped by securing lump only to grind it in the breaker." Width of Working Place—The width of a working place is the greatest width a place may be safely driven. The working place includes not only the face but the roads the loader must tram when mucking out more than one face. The width is limited by the system of placing props with sufficient room between them for the machine runner (about 2 ft). Maximum width of place in which the loader will operate at maximum efficiency is determined by the type of mounting. With track-mounted loaders, maximum width of place is determined by maximum angular swing of the loading head and proximity of track to the face. The use of double track leads to added expense and operational complexities. Several mines that have used double-track systems have found that a substantial saving is made by the use of machines that load out wider places. Trackless loaders may work in rooms of any maximum width. Minimum width of place in which a loader will operate is determined by width of the loader plus a safe movement area for the operator. Often a barodynamic study of the mine will show that either an increase in room width and/or a change in the system of propping may be made by using roof bolting, full or part-width room timbers, removable aluminum I-beams at the face, etc. Increasing the width of a working place will, in general, increase loader operating efficiency by providing more material per fall and by decreasing the preparation and moving time per ton. A change in the system of propping that would increase the minimum width might permit the use of a higher capacity loader with safer working conditions. Proper face tirnbering is necessary to insure safety from roof falls and because the speed of preparation and loading generally increases since the men work with greater assurance and there is less chance of kicking out posts. With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

"In this article, cold spraying process was utilized to coat the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy with a layer of AA7075 aluminum alloy. Thereafter, friction-stir processing (FSP) was employed to enhance the microstructure and consolidate the deposited layer. The grain structure and phase morphology were studied along with indentation hardness before and after cold spraying and friction stir processing. The magnesium substrate had an initial hardness of 74 HV which increased to 102 HV after FSP due to refinement of grains to <2 µm. The aluminum coating layer, provided improved surface hardness up to 160 HV, which further increased to 173 HV after FSP was applied.INTRODUCTION Cold spray is a material deposition process which can be used for surface modification, since it deposits material on a metallic substrate with little heating by way of high velocity ballistic impacts. Using cold spray technology, it is possible to deposit a wide range of coatings with various thicknesses by controlling the characteristics of the feeding powder and metal substrate, gas temperature, gas pressure, powder feeding rate, nozzle geometry, and gun traverse velocity. This process has been recently employed for surface modification in various aircraft and automobile structural applications. This has led to a broad range of research using this process for production and modification of different metallic and non-metallic systems. In the present study, cold spray process was used to deposit a uniform layer of aluminum-zinc alloy (AA7075) on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy. This coating was subsequently treated by way of friction-stir processing (FSP) as a new post-spraying modification technique to enhance the structural homogeneity and densification of the coated aluminum layer. This method utilizes a non-consumable rotating tool with a specially designed shoulder and pin that is plunged into the surface of metal to be modified and then moved along the direction of interest. The localized frictional heating between the rotating tool and workpiece leads to softening of the materials around the pin, and material extrusion through a complex flow of material from the advancing toward the retreating side the tool. To the author’s best knowledge, only a few reports discuss the modification of a cold sprayed deposit by FSP process. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the cold sprayed layer and substrate before and after FSP modification were examined using optical observations (OM) and indentation hardness testing. Furthermore, the AZ31 alloy substrate alone was treated with FSP as well, for the aim of comparison to the processed coating."

The I-395/SR-836/I-95 reconstruction project is an $818-million design-build construction effort that includes construction of viaduct, segmental and signature bridges in Miami leading into Miami Beach in Florida. Based on the load testing performed during the design phase, the design-build team determined that conventional driven pile and drilled shaft foundations were not feasible for support of segmental and signature bridges. Due to the weak limestone formation and successful use of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles in the Downtown Miami area on commercial developments, ACIP piles were selected as a foundation system to support bridges. This is the first time in history where the bridges will be supported by ACIP pile foundations in an interstate highway in the State of Florida. The design build-team worked closely with the Florida Department of Transportation to develop requirements for the load test program. The paper will provide an overview of the geotechnical data collected, results of dynamic/bi-directional load testing performed on test piles, data collected, installation of piles, and lessons learned. The load test program included a total of fifteen test piles with dynamic, bi-directional, and lateral load testing on 30 and 36-inch diameter ACIP piles and instrumented with thermal integrity profiling wires.

Land use planning is not a new concept in the United States but the emphasis has changed drastically since the early 1960&apos;s. Under the old interpretation we tried to expand our frontiers and develop our land, but as society has become more affluent and mobile the demand has grown to preserve those parts remaining undeveloped. There is something of a paradox inherent in this change of emphasis. While affluence has motivated our support to preserve the quality of the natural environment, industrial development is needed to support the affluence. Because we cannot accomplish all of each, sound planning and compromise will be necessary since it is unlikely that, the American people will want to surrender much of their life-style or their awakening environmental concern. Any industrial society, whether a goal reached or an aim yet ahead, is built largely on the use of mineral raw materials and energy, the physical base of nearly all activities and products. The standard of living which is important to us all is growing more dependent upon these minerals, metals, and energy fuels. Although reduction in consumption of raw materials may be acceptable to those at a certain economic level of a society, those who have not reached that level cannot be expected to accept a lowering of their present or anticipated standard of living.

Silicon dioxide, silica, is the most common oxide in the earth&apos; s crust. The health effects of silicon dioxide dust have been known since Biblical times. Agricola&apos;s book, published in the mid 1500&apos;s on occupational medicine, described a lung disease that afflicted miners. He observed a disease in miners that caused shortness of breath, coughing and wasting. Add fever, chest pains and fatigue and we have the current symptom complex of silicosis. As we approached the 21stcentury, the Labor Department began an aggressive campaign to combat silicosis-a preventable disease. Unfortunately, many publications do not clearly differentiate the polymorphs of silica known to mineralogists. Crystalline silica, i.e., alpha quartz, tridymite and cristobalite need to be considered differently from the amorphous forms of silica. Freshly fractured surfaces of the silica and host specific responses will be examined. Recent research focuses on the biologic interactions of free radicals generated by mineral particles. This results in cell injury and DNA damage, in turn leading to fibrogenesis and possibly carcinogenesis. In addition to particle-cell interactions, emphasis is given to lung defense mechanisms.

In Pt- and Au-keeping complex ores processing, about 10% ~ 15% of noble metals are lost with true tailings that are due to low floatability of Pt- and Au-keeping minerals by the conventional collectors. With the aim to achieve the effective recovery of noble metals at flotation of Pt-Cu-Ni and Au-keeping ores organic complex reagents keeping electron-donating atoms of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus may be offered as selective collectors for the indicated minerals. These rea-gents tend to form complex compounds with PGM. Besides this, Cu-Ni-Pt and complex Pt and Au carbonated mica ores are characterized by finely disseminated (up to nanometer size) mineral forms of Pt in multivalent states. In this connection, the use of a combination of the strong ionic collectors with nonionic reactants that are capable to derivate complex compounds with multivalent PGM seems to be expedient for this type of ores. In the research new complex reactants were tested such as cyclic alkylene-trithiocarbonates, oxyalkyl butylxanthogen acid ethers, a combination of the collectors ? mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and dialkyldithiophosphates (DTP). Sorption and flotation tests were made with monomine-ralic samples of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and Pt-Cu-Ni sulfide ore samples. Sorption properties were examined by the extractive UV spectrophotometric method and potentiometric measurements. To indicate a structure of modified xanthate solutions the method of a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was applied. The chromatographic behavior of the basic components of modified xanthate solution ? ButX, cyclic propylene-trithiocarbonate (PTTC), diethyl-dithiocarbamate (DEDC) and the product of its modification ? oxypropyl-S-ether of dithiocarbamatic acid was studied on plates ?Silufol UV ? 254?. The composition of organic solvents and its ratio in a mobile phase was deter-mined for simultaneous chromatography of the main components of a reaction mixture. It was found that operating selectivity of MBT, DTP and cyclic alkylene-trithiocarbonates incorporated in modified xanthate in relation to Pt-Cu-Ni and Au-containing sulfide minerals might be explained by an electoral sorption of this nonionic collector on a surface of the minerals studied. It was demonstrated that the application new reagent modes with the use of a combination of designed complex reactants helped to increase the extraction index of Pt- and Au-keeping minerals from complicated ores.
