Spontaneous combustion presents a very serious hazard to both safety and economics of mining operations. Notwithstanding considerable research that has been done over the years to present and control spontaneous combustion the risk still exists. Consequently, this problem poses a major challenge to mine safety researchers; new and improved techniques are constantly being developed to deal with this major hazard. This paper reviews the current practices to prevent and control spontaneous combustion in coal mine operations highlighting new developments in this area. Research and development work presently being carried out in Canada to' deal with this problem is also discussed which includes monitoring, inertization and application of biotechnology.

A potential new rare earth extraction process has been suggested (Lazo, et al., 2017) (Lazo, et al., 2018) based on converting the rare earth elements to solid phase rare earth oxalates in an oxalic acid leach. Oxalic acid consumption is a significant issue in the process, therefore to improve the viability of this proposed new extraction method, a process to recover oxalate from the leach solution and recycle oxalic acid is required. A review of the literature and confirmation through thermodynamic analysis of the potential options identified precipitation of calcium or ferrous oxalate as the best potential options. The use of metallic iron to both provide ferrous ions as a precipitant and reduce ferric ions in solution would provide the most economical option, however slow kinetics and unreacted iron created significant issues with this process. The direct use of ferrous ions, while faster and more efficient, produced a precipitate with relatively poor solid/liquid handling characteristics and would require an intermediate stage utilising calcium in regenerating the oxalate. Utilising calcium chloride and oxide created very similar precipitates with better physical properties than the ferrous oxalate and that a reasonable proportion of the oxalate could be recovered before neutralisation of the solution induced precipitation of other phases such as iron oxy-hydroxides and calcium phosphate. The produced calcium oxalate was easily converted to oxalic acid and gypsum via immersion in sulphuric acid. It was also found that there is a significant loss of oxalic acid due to factors other than rare earth oxalate precipitation during leaching. This leads to a maximum oxalate recovery in the range of 50 %.

The theory of ore flotation has developed at a rather fast rate and the application of theory to practice has been successfully investigated. Significant technological advances have been made in such areas as control of the ore grade, automation in metallurgical control through conductivity measurements, and the development of faster and continuous analytical techniques for ore pulp analysis. Further significant improvements in mill control are being_ investigated through the application of a computer control to the process. This represents the more advanced trend in process control. At the heart of a control system installation, the digital computer will communicate directly with process instrumentation, perform' complex calcu¬lations to determine on a timely basis the control settings for attaining optimum results and automatically furnish signals to effect control actions. The process is considered as an integrated unit and economic criteria are used to measure its performance. The approaches to a mathematical model development to describe the process, optimization and control schemes as applied to an ore beneficiation process will be discussed.

The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

Synthetic fuels will be the first major development effort to feel the effects of a new set of opposition forces. These confrontations will not be of the same variety as those which occured in the 1970s. Instead the synfuels industry, particularly in the West, will find itself confronting a new coalition of local political, community, and state spokesmen. They will oppose synfuels because the projects will represent a threat to existing lifestyles, political structures, taxes, social life, water rights, economics, and other politically sensitive considerations. In short, they mean change -- usually dynamic, full of unknowns and always threatening. The battles themselves may be fought technically over environmental issues, law and regulations; often these will be the instruments of the opposition. The real underlying problems will likely lie much deeper. In many cases environmental groups will be enlisted as the standard bearers; however, this approach may simply reflect the fact that environmental objections are convenient or at times the only tools at hand.

Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.

Molybdenite mineralization occurs in the hood zone of the Questa mine aplite-porphyry intrusive, one of the three sil ica-rich intrusive5 occurring along the east-west trending Red River Trench that crosses the northerly trending Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico. The Trench is located immediately north of the circular Gold Hill positive block between the Red River and Cabresto Creek drainages. The aplite-porphyry bodies intruded a mid-Tertiary volcanic section consisting of lower andesites, overlain by latites and rhyolites. They occur largely in the andesites and were emplaced mainly by metasomatism rather than by sloping. Hydrothermal alteration occurs both as blanket propylitization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the porphyries and as halo-type alteration outward from veins and shear zones resulting in strong biotization in the volcanics and sericitization and kaolinization in the aplitic rocks. Mineralization consists of: ( 1) molybdenite- quartz veinlets; (2) banded molybdenite, quartz veins frequently with biotite and potash feldspar along the walls and occasionally with minor lead, zinc, and copper sulfides and with fluorite and carbonates when again reopened; ( 3) high grade molybdenite locally along shear zones; and ( 4) molybdenite paint along joint and fracture surfaces. The mineralization was associated with faulting that resulted from numerous periods of gravity adjustment along the Trench and was controlled by the major shear systems that trend northeast, east-west and north-south to northwest. Molybdenite has been well oxidized in nearsurface exposures to ferrimolybdite and the molybdenum-bearing ferric hydroxide, akaganeite. The oxidation of the abundant pyrite within the veins and shear zones and of the alteration pyrite in the volcanics resulted in a low pH environment under which the acid molybdate ion released by oxidation was fixed either in the ferrimolybdite or the akaganeite molecule in the veins and shear zones or in the soils. The construction of underground hydrocarbon storage caverns in Jurong Island, Singapore, is nearing completion. The facility, located beneath the seabed of Banyan Basin, is comprised of five storage caverns with a storage capacity of approximately 1.5 million cubic meters. The galleries of each cavern are 20 m wide by 27 m high and approximately 340 m long. In addition to the storage caverns, various access and operations tunnels are required to support the facility. Among these are water curtain galleries to ensure that hydrostatic pressures in excess of hydrocarbon storage pressure are maintained in the rock mass surrounding the storage caverns. Early in the design process, conventional steel rock bolts with resin polymer grout were considered for ground control. However, the construction contractor proposed using fibe-reinforced polymer (FRP) bolts with cement grout due to the corrosive hydrologic environment, weight and handling considerations, local construction preferences, and the requirement to have a cavern design life of 50 years. FRP bolts with cement grout were ultimately chosen for the project. The FRP bolting system has proven to be very successful, with no ground failures experienced where systematic FRP bolting has been applied. This paper discusses the properties of FRP bolt/cement grout bolting systems, their characteristics in relation to steel bolt/resin bolting systems, and numerical modeling results assessing their performance.

"The Lone Tree demonstration was an important milestone in bringing High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology into hard rock applications in the mining industry. HPGRs have become standard equipment in the cement, iron ore, and diamond industries over the past fifteen years, but their use in severe duties found in the hard rock mining sector has been restricted due to high roll wear and subsequent low availability. HPGR availability has historically been limited because of frequent downtime for edge weld rebuilding as the rolls wore and short tyre life from high roll surface wear rates.Recent advancements in HPGR wear protection are now being evaluated for commercial applications in the gold and copper mining industry where this technology may offer benefits in comminuting hard and/or abrasive ores and in improving metal recovery in heap leaching applications.Proving the feasibility of HPGRs for processing competent, abrasive gold ore, Newmont Mining Corporation, the world's largest gold producer, operated an HPGR demonstration plant employing a POLYSIUS (POLYCOM) HPGR incorporating some unique wear protection, at their Lone Tree gold mine near Winnemucca, Nevada. Results of the successful demonstration are presented and evaluated in this paper.The Lone Tree HPGR demonstration plant operated for three months, from April through June 2003. The HPGR operated for 1626 hours and processed 141,000 tons of ore. This technology demonstration focused on measuring operating performance, wear characteristics, and availability of today's HPGR technology.Polysius' innovative roll surface wear protection system eliminated edge-welding downtime. Improved surface wear protection extended tyre life to predicted durations acceptable for very abrasive service. The POLYCOM HPGR is now deemed suitable for selected hard rock applications."

Installation procedure and the quality of the material used in the construction have significant effects on the behavior of the Auger Cast in Place (ACIP) piles. In this study, Installation and curing of a 760 mm (30 in.) diameter and 12 m (39 ft) long ACIP pile with a design capacity of 1140 kN (128 tons) in hard clay was investigated. Construction quality was monitored using the automated monitoring system where the volume of grout pumped and the pressures were monitored with depth. The curing of the pile was monitored using axial vibrating wire strain gages at four levels and lateral vibrating wire strain gages at two levels. The residual strain and temperature profile in the curing pile was monitored over a period of week to determine the appropriate time for load testing the pile. Axial behavior of Auger Cast in Place (ACIP) Piles in hard clay was studied using full scale load test on an instrumented pile. The load-settlement and load transfer relationships of the pile was investigated based on the load test results. Development of skin friction in the load test pile and the reaction pile was also investigated.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. Oversize boulders in mines and quarries must be broken for waste disposal or further processing of ore. Early methods involved drilling and "shooting" or using a drop ball of sufficient weight to accomplish the purpose. The first "high-energy" hammers for breaking concrete or boulders were pneumatically operated. Blow energy was limited by valving and air pressure. However, smaller boulders of lower compressive strength could be broken. A hydraulic excavator-backhoe type machine was required for either a drop ball or hammer. Standard practice was to break oversize boulders in the pit before hauling to the grizzly or crusher. Generally, quarry boulders were not valuable enough for further processing. Quarry roads were lined with oversize boulders. As safety requirements were advanced, "drill and blast" for boulders was ruled out.

However excellent the geologic map of an area is, it can only show what is exposed on the ground. It cannot and should not generalize the information nor complete the picture by inference: this is left to the examiner. Consequently, it becomes justified for him to use all expressions of geologic structure in order to gain an additional dimension in geologic interpretation, and particularly so in mineral exploration. In previous studies related to Arizona, the known faults were the starting points and a host of interpolated, supporting geologic factors described in earlier publications ascertained the presence of a series of structural trends and lineaments found to be rather continuous and persistent, even though unsubstantiated by geologic maps. In present studies pertaining to the humid environment, with the same aim of seeking major structural trends and lineaments, the starting points are morphologic expressions such as straight lakes and straight segments of rivers, among others, because there generally is not enough geology available. An example is given herewith for an area that straddles the International Border, north of Spokane. In both semi-arid and humid environments, one observes that mineral deposits quite often occur close to the intersection of a major fracture or lineament with some secondary trend.

N. A. Degerstrom, Inc. has constructed and operated a processing plant approximately five miles north of Soda Springs, Idaho for processing a byproduct phosphate treater dust from Monsanto&apos;s elemental phosphorus plant, also located in Soda Springs. The plant is designed to produce agricultural-grade phosphoric acid, gallium, and silver. The design capacity of the plant is 54.4t (60 st) of treater dust per day, which can produce 16,326t (18,000 st) of phosphoric acid, 6,600 kg of gallium, and 6,033 kg (194,000 oz.) of silver per year.

The reaction between manganese dioxide and molybdenite in a water- sulfuric acid medium was studied at atmospheric pressure and from 25° to 103°C. Both solids are dissolved to give, as final products in solution, Mo(VI), S(VI), and Mn(II). Stoichiornetric relationshifis are most simply represented by the equation MoSz + YMnO2 + 15H+ - HMoO-4 + 2HSO-4 + 9Mn++ + 6H20 The rate of this reaction was found to be dependent on temperature, manganese sulfate concentration, acid concentration, and, in a complex way, the surface areas of both manganese dioxide and molybdenite. Both the total amount of manganese dioxide and tnolybdenite and the ratio of manganese dioxide to molybdenite played a part in determining the over-all rate of the reaction. The effect of acid concentration on the rate was also dependent on the ratio of manganese dioxide to molybdenite. SEVERAL reports in the literature describe reactions using manganese dioxide in water-sulfuric acid media as an oxidizing agent. Nearly all previous work describes interactions between an ion and manganese dioxide, such as the oxidation of ferrous to ferric iron,&apos; or the interaction between a molecule in solution and manganese dioxide, such as the oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.2 Only a few references describe the use of solid manganese dioxide to oxidize another solid in sulfuric acid. One report3 states, "Manganese dioxide in dilute sulfuric acid solutions had no beneficial effect (in leaching copper from chalcopyrite), but in more concentrated acid solutions the rate of solution was about the same as that for permanganate." In 1902 a German patent4 described a process which used manganese dioxide in strong (50°Be&apos;) sulfuric acid for oxidizing chromite ores to soluble iron and chromium salts. The process consisted of mixing the sulfuric acid with the finely ground ore and manganese dioxide. The pulp was then heated to about 120°C and an electric current passed through it. The manganese dioxide apparently dissolved in the strong, hot acid solution, oxidized the iron and chromium and itself was reduced to manganese 11! then was oxidized at the anode back to manganese dioxide, and the cycle repeated. An extensive study5 of the kinetics of the oxidation of pyrite with manganese dioxide indicated that in dilute sulfuric acid solutions (about 0.1 N) and at elevated pressures the dissolution of the pyrite was brought about by air oxidation of the iron to ferrous sulfate, followed by manganese dioxide oxidation of the ferrous sulfate to ferric sulfate. The mechanism proposed by the authors involved the oxidation of the iron at the surface of the manganese dioxide. Also! the oxidation of sulfide sulfur to sulfate was credited to the oxygen in the air, not to the manganese dioxide. One of the important directions of further increase of quality and efficiency of control of mining companies and branches is the creation of the operation and development monitoring systems of such facilities. The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. However until the present time no scientific and methodical ground for system monitoring of the mining companies and branches has been created. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.

An experimental investigation was carried out to -study the rates of reduction of pellets containing iron oxides by carbon dissolved in liquid iron, at temperatures ranging from 1720 K to 1973 K. Several different pellet types were employed; the materials used in the pellet&apos;s manufacture were pure hematite, two kinds of commercial iron ores, and mixtures hematite/silica and hematite/lime: Reaction times were determined employing the constant volume pressure increase technique (CVPI). It has been observed that the reaction rate increases as the temperature and the pellet&apos;s specific surface area increases. The reaction rate is also affected by the oxide type: pellets made from commercial ores or from mixtures hematite/silica or hematite/lime show reaction rates lower than those made from pure hematite.

THE possibilities of separating and purifying metals by high vacuum distillation were examined by Kroll.1 He suggested vacuum treatment for the removal of zinc from the lead produced after Parkes desilverizing. The St. Joseph Lead Co. developed the first commercial vacuum dezincing process at their Herculaneum refinery, as described by Isbell.² The Broken Hill Associated Smelters at Port Pirie, Australia, has, after several years of pilot plant operations and fundamental investigations, developed a continuous process, which will be described briefly in a forthcoming publication." As the full-scale continuous vacuum dezincing plant at Port Pirie is still experimental, publication of full practical details of the plant will be deferred until the unit is operating as a normal part of the continuous refinery. This paper deals only with theoretical aspects of vacuum distillation processes, with particular reference to vacuum dezincing. The method of mathematical analysis is of general interest as it may be applicable to other metallurgical separations which have been investigated recently.4-6 Evaporation Processes At about atmospheric pressure, or higher, most liquids possess a boiling point—a temperature at which any heat put into the liquid is absorbed only as latent heat, not as specific heat. If a steady heat input is supplied, the liquid&apos;s temperature rises to this value, then remains constant while bubbles of vapor form beneath the surface. The rate of evaporation is determined solely by the rate of heat transfer to the liquid; the temperature of boiling is determined by the partial pressures of the volatile constituents in the liquid, and the total pressure above the surface. If the rate of heat transfer to the liquid is increased, the temperature remains constant, and the rate of boiling increases. When evaporating metals under vacuum, however, the partial pressures concerned are generally so small that boiling does not occur, because at even a fraction of a millimeter below the surface the hydrostatic pressure is usually too great to permit the formation of a pocket of vapor. In addition, the high thermal conductivity of metals tends to prevent the local superheating which is necessary for bubble formation.&apos; Although this effect is doubtless also exerted when boiling metals at higher pressures, the magnitude will be less because the degree of superheat required to form bubbles is very much less at the higher temperatures involved. Under vacuum, therefore, evaporation of volatile constituents takes place only from the exposed surface, and the rate of evaporation depends upon the surface area, the surface concentration of volatile constituents, the surface temperature, and the partial pressures of volatile constituents immediately above the surface. If the heat input is raised above a certain level, the effect is not to increase the evaporation rate at constant temperature, but to raise the temperature of the liquid until at some higher level an increased rate of evaporation (and thus of latent heat absorption) again balances the heat input rate.? Many substances (including metals) have a very large intrinsic evaporation rate at quite low temperatures—far below their normal boiling points. However, at atmospheric pressure, the large numbers of atoms evaporated are almost completely deflected back into the liquid (or solid) surface by air molecules. Thus the back condensation rate is practically equal to the gross evaporation rate, and the net evaporation rate is practically zero. It can therefore be seen that an overall distillation rate depends not only upon the intrinsic evaporation rate, but also upon the ability of the volatile atoms to move away from the evaporating surface. This movement is facilitated by the provision of a condensing surface close by. Vacuum Distillation: The function of the vacuum above the evaporating surface is to remove foreign molecules, so that the chances of deflection of an evaporated atom back into its source are reduced. When the residual gas pressure is reduced so far that the evaporated atoms have a high probability of reaching a nearby condensing surface without suffering collision with a foreign molecule, the state of affairs is termed "molecular distillation." This process is practiced commercially today for the purification of numerous organic chemical products of high unit value, but not, to the writer&apos;s knowledge, for any metallurgical separation.
