Improved desulfurization of Illinois coals is a widely Shared research goal. The development of a physical cleaning strategy and the results of a project to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of producing a low sulfur compliance coal from the Illinois Basin are reported. Processing flowsheets to extend or retrofit existing preparation plants are considered. Comminution, conventional and micro-bubble flotation, and selective agglomeration technologies were investigated to maximize pyrite rejection while maintaining high product yield. Batch bench scale testing was followed by continuous pilot plant studies. Parameters included grind size, flow rates, pulp density, aeration, agitation, and reagent dose. An economic evaluation of targeted processes is included.

The in situ testing of mine ventilation fan systems has been a contentious issue for many years. Site testing was generally undertaken by adapting standards that were developed for the laboratory testing of fans using standardised airways. The deficiencies inherent in this practice have been widely recognised by informed practitioners, and this led to the first stand-alone document specifically intended for the in situ testing of large fans (ISO 5802:2001 Industrial fans - Performance testing in situ).This paper describes the structure of the International Standards organisation and the processes that are followed in the course of preparing such a standard.The application of ISO 5802:2001 is briefly outlined together with how test data is assessed for compliance with the suppliers guarantee. CHUQUICAMATA, located in northern Chile in the Province of Antofagasta, is on the western slope of the Andes at an elevation of 9500 ft. Because of its position on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert, the climate is extremely arid with practically no precipitation, either rain or snow. All primary blasting in the open-pit mine at Chuquicamata is done by the churn drill, blasthole method. Since 1915; when the first tonnages of importance were removed from the open pit, there have been many changes in the blasting practice, but no clear-cut rules of method and procedure have been devised for application to the mine as a whole. One general fact stands out: both the ore and waste rock at Chuquicamata are difficult to break satisfactorily for the most efficient operation of power shovels. Numerous experiments have been made in an effort to improve the breakage and thereby increase the shovel efficiency. Holes of different diameter have been drilled, the length of toe and spacing of holes have been varied, and several types of explosives have been used. Early blasting was done by the tunnel method. The banks were high, generally 30 m, requiring the use of large charges of black powder, detonated by electric blasting caps: Large tonnages were broken at comparatively low cost, but the method left such a large proportion of oversize material for secondary blasting that satisfactory shovel operation was practically impossible: Railroad-type steam and electric shovels then in service proved unequal to the task of efficiently handling the large proportion of oversize material produced. The clean-up of high banks proved to be dangerous and expensive as large quantities of explosive were consumed in dressing these banks, and from time to time the shovels were damaged by rock slides. As early as 1923 the high benches were divided, and a standard height of 12 m was selected for the development of new benches. The recently acquired Bucyrus-Erie 550-B shovel, with its greater radius of operation compared to the Bucyrus-Erie 320-B formerly used for bench development, allowed the bench height to be increased to 16 m. Churn drill, blasthole shooting proved to be successful, and tunnel blasts were limited to certain locations where development existed or natural ground conditions made the method more attractive than the use of churn-drill holes. Liquid oxygen explosive and black powder were used along with dynamite of various grades in blasthole loading up to early 1937. Liquid oxygen and black powder were discontinued because they were more difficult to handle due to their sensitivity to fire or sparks in the extremely dry climate. At present ammonium nitrate dynamite is favored because of its superior handling qualities and its adaptability to the dry condition found in 90 pct of the mine. In wet holes, which are found only in the lowest bench of the pit and account for the remaining 10 pct of the ground to be broken, Nitramon in 8x24-in. cans, or ammonium nitrate dynamite packed in 8x24-in. paper cartridges, is being used. This latter explosive, which is protected by a special antiwetting agent that makes the cartridges resistant to water for about 24 hr, currently is considered the best available for the work and is preferred over Nitramon. Early churn drill hole shots detonated' by electric blasting caps, one in each hole, gave trouble because of misfires caused by the improper balance of resistance in the electrical circuits. Primarily, it was of vital importance to effect an absolute balance of resistance in these circuits, the undertaking and completion of which invariably caused delays in the shooting schedule. Misfires resulting from the improper balance of electrical circuits, or from any other cause, were extremely hazardous, since holes had to be unloaded or fired by the insertion of another detonator. The advent of cordeau, later followed by primacord, corrected this particular difficulty and therefore reduced the possibility of missed holes. After much experimentation, the blasting practice evolved into single row, multihole shots, with the holes spaced 4.5 to 5 m center to center in a row 7.5 to 8 m back from the toe. Such shots were fired from either end .by electric blasting caps attached to the main trunk lines of cordeau or primacord. The detonating speed of cordeau or primacord gave the practical effect of firing all holes instantaneously. Double row and multirow blasts, fired instantaneously with cordeau or primacord, proved to be unsatisfactory in the type of rock found at Chuquica-

Market forces, particularly iron ore prices, demand that plant operators achieve higher throughput in the worldÆs iron ore beneficiation plants without compromising yields or efficiency. This means that production cost per ton is of paramount importance and that all major pieces of Processing Equipment have come under close scrutiny to improve throughput at their most efficient performance levels and for the longest possible continuous running time. Without doubt the use of modern engineering standards and materials of construction has contributed to matching these throughput, efficiency and availability demands. However, often not enough attention is paid to the so called æinsignificant elementsÆ connecting this metallurgical equipment, such as chutes, pipes or other conveying systems, and particularly to the sufficient protection of their wearing surfaces. The result can be an unplanned and expensive outage caused by the wear related failure of such components. This paper will discuss:the theory of wear and the multiple factors of material and design that contribute to a reduction in wear; and the combinations of modern wear resistant materials available to todayÆs engineer and how, by intelligent selection and correct application, plant availability can be optimised. Examples outlining how these principles have been applied in South Africa showing some improvements leading to increased plant availability.

The Specific purposes of forma! engineering education include training in the basic sciences, the engincering-prob]em method, the rudimentary development of technical skills, an appreciation of values and costs, and an understanding of the art of engineering as distinguished from its science, Two major divisions of an educational program in engineering are recognized: (I) the scientific-technological, and (2) the humanistic-social. Hence, the entire curriculum for the four-year program in specialized petroleum engineering schools must be designed to give the student an initial impetus in the directions indicated. In accordance with suggestions from the Engineering Council for Professional Development, Inore attention is being given to the fundamental approach in the undergraduate curriculum. This paper presents a cross-sectional viewpoint of the various educators in the petroleum engineering schools concerning course contents in the specialized curricula An outline is suggested for the content of the specialized courses wherein the engineering problem method or quantitative approach is emphasized. Although the particular viewpoints of the author have been stressed, yet due acknowledgment is made to a considerable number of petroleum engineering educators and in in industry interested in educational work, for their contribution of course outlines or helpful suggestions with respect to programs that will be of maximum value to students, institutions, and the industry they serve. Although "standardization" of course material is not suggested, the advantage to be gained by cooperative determination of purpose and scope are apparent paiticular1y from 'he standpoint of the proper accreditment of petroleum engineering schools by petroleum engineering educetors who have laid a basis from which to measure educational values. Petroleum engineering has "come of age" and deserves the same careful attention with respect to. curricula that has been accorded other engineering branches. Introduction Engineering schools have a major responsibility to the public, to industry and to the professions they serve. The specific purposes of formal education include training in the basic sciences, the engineering-problem method, the rudimentary development of technical skills, an reciaciation of values and costs, and an understanding of the art of engineering as distinguished from its science. Other purposes implied include the ability to read, write, and speak the English language effectively, an understanding of social and human relationships, a knowledge of the duties of citizenship, a broad appreciation of cultural interests, and an indoctrination in professional standards and relations. Throughout these educational processes is the development in the student of habits of accuracy, thoroughness, powers of analysis, creative ability and integrity with respect to all phases of his work. Hydraulic Transportation of Phosphate Ore from, a 40,000 Cubic Yard per Day Strip Mine IMC is transporting 1500 yards per hour of phosphate ore in a water slurry a distance of approximately five miles from a strip mine to a flotation beneficiation plant at their Noralyn Operation. in Barrow, Florida. This ore, which consists of approximately 1/4 phosphate, 1/2 silica sand, and 1/4 clay slimes, is being pumped through a 20 inch O. D. pipeline using seven 20 and 18 inch GIW metal pumps direct connected to electric, motors. This paper details some of the problems involved and the specific methods used to accomplish this bulk material handling requirement.

A key deliverable of the study was information to de-risk the perception of SMS mining for investors the minerals, and that deep-sea mining of SMS material is technically feasible, commercially viable and can safely be managed as a sustainable marine resource industry. Exposure to particulates containing metals and metal fumes (PCMMF) is a potential concern in ore refining and smelting. Some metals of primary interest are arsenic, cadmium, copper and lead, which have been linked to various adverse health effects. The current National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sampling method for metals in particulates requires the use of a filter, precision airflow pump and laboratory analysis. A major concern with this method is the one-to-two weeks? wait before laboratory results are available for use in determining if additional controls are needed to assure adequate exposure protection for workers. Particulates containing these metals were sampled during sixteen sampling events at a copper smelter using the traditional NIOSH methods. Monitoring of particulates was simultaneously conducted using a TSI 8520 Dust-Trak real-time aerosol monitor with a 10-µm-cutpoint sampling inlet. NIOSH analytical methods related to particulates and metals (methods 0500, 0600 and 7300) were used to determine particulate mass and individual mass contributions of metals on sample filters. Linear regressions with y-intercepts forced to zero were developed to determine the relationship between the PM10 measurements recorded by the DustTrak and laboratory-reported total particulate mass, PM10 and respirable arsenic, cadmium, copper and lead concentrations. These linear regressions yielded correction factors that can be applied to DustTrak readings to obtain total particulate mass, PM10 and respirable concentration estimates for each of the four metals. The R2 (coefficient of determination) values from the linear regressions ranged from 0.65 for total lead to 0.91 for total copper. These results suggest that the DustTrak may produce real-time data useful in providing estimates for airborne concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper and lead in copper smelter particulates.

Some fundamental studies were carried out in order to produce composite powders comprising of two or three metal salts by using liquid-liquid extraction and to develop the control technology of the particle size. The combination of samarium and cobalt was selected as the two component composite powders. Both stripping and crystallization occurred at the same time by emulsifying the organic phase loading the two metals extracted with Versa tic Acid 10 and the aqueous solution containing oxalic acid. The effect of aqueous pH, oxalic acid concentration and agitation speed was examined on some properties such as crystallization percent, particle size and shape of each metal oxalate powders obtained in this process. The analysis by using EDX showed that the two metal oxalates were distributed uniformly at the same ratio as the organic phase composition.

In the center of Florida, fresh water may be found as deep as 2.000 feet, whereas, along the coast it may extend no deeper than about 200 feet. Chloride concentration in small local areas may deviate from the values represented on both the cross section and the main map. The extraction of lignite in open-cast mines has a severe impact on the landscape. Proper landscaping after the shut-down of the mines has always been the statutory responsibility of the mine operator. The large area of the land used for open-cast lignite mining requires special regional planning procedures well in advance of the permitting procedure stipulated in the mining law. The lignite plan determines, among other things, the objectives of land reclamation. These objectives will then be outlined in more detail in the mine operation plans and implemented accordingly. Apart from the actual mining laws and regulations, a large number of environmental laws also determine the process of land reclamation. The success achieved in the field of land reclamation in all mining regions during the recent decades has shown that the lignite mining industry creates new landscapes that do not leave any scars in the countryside and merge very well with it.

Discussion of the paper of L. G. HUNTLEY,. presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 102, June, 1915, pp. 1333 to 1349. E. W. SHAW, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*). -The comparatively great extent and uniform character of the Dakota sandstone make it of great interest to the student of rock pores and the movements of their fluid contents. However, compared with other sands in areas of carbonaceous rocks facts concerning it do not seem to be of such great direct importance to the producer for it has thus far yielded few important pools of oil or gas. Information concerning the sandstone is extensive but scattered, hence a general treatise regarding it-particularly its pores, the fluids they contain, and the movements of the fluids-has been much needed. I therefore feel that the. chief thing to be ,desired concerning Mr. Huntley's paper is that it were more extended, particularly as to the discussion of the data presented. The general structure map of the Dakota is of especial interest. Slight changes in wording seem to be desirable here and there in the paper. For example, at the beginning of the third paragraph one-wonders if flora instead of fauna were not intended. In Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 the vertical scale seems incorrect. Concerning the analyses of oil quoted it is noted that they "are given, as indicating what may be expected in different localities." This seems to need modification for the average analysis of oil from Powder River, which indicates for example that this oil begins to boil at 213°C. The fact is that the samples to which this figure refers were taken from seeps long exposed. to the air :find hence the underground Dakota oil of this district no doubt differs profoundly from that which the analysis indicates. The product of a well here would probably differ more in boiling point and other. respects from the samples analyzed than it would from almost any other petroleum in the world. The use of the word synclinorium does not conform to the original definition, but this may be pardonable because misuse of the term, though a different misuse, has become general. Synclinorium is an orographic term and cannot be correctly applied outside of mountain regions, for it is derived in part from the Greek word for mountain. It has, however, been widely used in a purely structural sense for compound syncline. The broad shallow syncline of the Dakota sandstone falls in neither category. Reduction rates of FeO in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slags by Fe-C melts have been investigated experimentally at 1723 K. The rates were estimated using experimentally determined CO(g) evolution rates. Flash X-ray images were employed to visualize the behavior of the melt-slag interface during the reactions. The influence of melt interface was examined by conducting two types of experiments - (i) dropping one (or several) Fe-C droplet(s) weighing 2 g into the molten slag bath, and (ii) dropping a small amount (10-30 g) of slag onto a Fe-C melt weighing 400 g. The rates from both types of experiments were compared and analyzed to determine the rate limiting steps. It was established that neither the carbon transport in the Fe-C melt, nor the transport of gas species in the gas film adjacent to Fe-C melt was responsible in limiting the reaction rate. It is possible that the slag phase mass transport may be controlling the initial reduction rate in the droplet experiments. However, a, different mechanism was responsible in limiting the reduction reaction when the overall %C in the droplets fell to about 2-3.

"IntroductionMANITOBA'S first recoverable oil was from the California Standard Daly 15-18 well in Lsd. 15, Sec. 18, Twp. 10, Range 27, W.P.M., completed early in 1951. This well also gave the first indications of commercial production in the Williston basin, which is centred in North Dakota and extends into southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. Subsequent drilling in the Manitoba portion of the basin has revealed the presence of oil in more or less commercial quantities at various points in an area approximately four townships in width and eleven townships in length.Although completions are becoming fairlly widespread in the area,, the greatest activity is in the Virden district, with the focal point in the Daly field, approximately eight miles west •of Virden. This paper will deal with the various techniques used in the Daly field, where •completion problems have •been unusually troublesome. Techniques evolved there have already been used with success at other points in southwestern Manitoba.Daly FieldGeneralTo date, all production has been from the Mississippian limestone, which is encountered •at depths ranging from 2,300 to 2,500 feet. Pay thickness is •of the order of 100 feet. Core analyses indicate average porosity .of about 9 per cent but permeabilities, for the most part, are extremely low."

Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health arid environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals. "The formation of reactive oxygen species resulting from the interaction of silica dust particles with red blood cell membranes was investigated; particularly, the effect of surface hydroxyl (silanol) group concentration on the rate of formation of such reactive oxygen species was investigated. The rate of formation was measured indirectly through the effect of catalase, a hemoprotein peroxidase, on silica-induced hemolysis. It was found that the addition of exogenous catalase to erythrocytes markedly reduces the hemolysis caused by silica particles. Furthermore, the amount of catalase required for deactivation of silica per unit area of particle surface is lower for fumed silica particles and calcined crystalline particles than for uncalcined, crystalline silica, suggesting a correlation between the concentration of OH groups at the silica particle surface and its potential for generation of H2O 2• The addition of albumin, a copper chelator, also decreases hemolysis. These results suggest that the hemolysis caused by silica particles is at least partly related to the formation of H2O2 at the particle surface and its subsequent reaction with Cu+ ions. The relationship between the concentration of surface silanol groups on the silica surface and the amount of catalase required to decrease hemolysis may also provide a method for testing potential fibrogenicity of respirable dusts. IntroductionReactive hydroxyl groups on silica surfaces are known to be cytotoxic and are believed to play a major role in silicosis (1-9). It has been proposed that this cytotoxicity results from hydrogen bonding to cell membranes and a resulting increase in membrane fluidity and permeability (4). Surface hydroxyl groups on silica surfaces have also been shown to interact with carbonyl oxygens in cell membranes (1,5). An extensive study by Nolan et al. (6) of the relationship between the negative surface charge resulting from ionized silanol groups and the hemolytic activity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil) has shown a positive correlation between hemolytic activity and the surface concentration of silanol groups. These authors demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding of polyvinyl-N-oxide (PVPNO) with silanol groups, as well as the bonding of metal cations to the ionized sm- groups, results in significant decreases in hemolytic activity. Furthermore, it has been found that the complete removal of surface hydroxyl groups from the surface of respirable silica particles nearly eliminates the hemolytic potential of silica (7), suggesting that hydroxyl groups might be involved in other cytotoxic processes associated with silica-induced lung injury. Reactive oxygen species have been .implicated in cellular damage caused by respirable silica particles. Evidence for the presence .of oxygen radical species (02, OH°, H2O2) generated by silica, especially on freshly formed surfaces, has been produced by various investigators. Kalbanev et al. (8) detected H2O 2 in aqueous suspensions of quartz. Electron spin resonance and spin trapping by Shi et al. (9) confirmed the presence of OH"" radicals in aqueous suspensions of quartz, and Gulumian and van Wyk (10) suggested that both glass and quartz produce hydroxyl radicals in the presence of H2O 2 • Gabor et al. (11) detected the presence of malondialdehydereactive lipid peroxides (i.e., lipid-0°) in cultures of macrophages and respirable silica particles using the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction test. Will (12), however, reported that iron enhances the TBA value of peroxidized lipids, and Scheulen and Kappus (19) found that catalase augmented malondialdehyde formation, thereby increasing the TBA values."

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a critical mineral is one that is essential to the economic well -being of a nation and whose supply may be disrupted due to geological, geopolitical or environmental factors (Nassar et al., 2020). For example, REEs are critical to the production of electricvehicle motors as well as wind turbines, yet China’s share of their global production rose to more than 95 percent in 2010 (IEA, 2021). China’s share has since declined, with production quotas dropping to nearly 70 percent by 2023 (Statista, 2023). This and similar situations with many of the critical minerals raise deep global concerns about supply-chain vulnerabilities (Bauer et al., 2011). Critical minerals are used in the production of renewable energy, electronics, agricultural products and common household items (McLemore, 2020). As the global demand for these minerals continues to grow, it is not sufficient to rely solely on scaling up production from existing operations. While increasing production from known deposits can provide short-term relief, long-term resource security requires discovering new, economically viable mineral resources. One of the most effective ways to secure future supply is through mineral exploration, which increases the global inventory of critical minerals and also minimizes risks posed by market monopolies and political instability. The major challenge of mineral exploration lies not only in identifying mineralized deposits but also in determining whether discovered concentrations are sufficient to warrant further investigation and development. A fundamental concept in this decision-making process is using cut-off grade. In this article, cut-off grade refers to the minimum concentration of minerals required to justify further exploration efforts based on factors such as type and size of mineral deposit, mining and processing technologies, associated byproducts/coproducts and the market price of these minerals. Typically, economic cut-off grades are used to determine whether a mineral deposit can be mined profitably. However, this article focuses on preliminary cut-off grades needed to establish whether the amounts of critical minerals within a deposit are high enough to justify further exploration and detailed evaluations. By comparing mineral deposit grades, size, production and extraction technology, and other economic factors with established and active mines, exploration teams can estimate cut-off grades that justify further exploration.

This paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.‡ Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Bar-berton constitutes the world's deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 2-40 ft. Fractured sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra- turn of oil-bearing sandstone one foot thick was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), ? by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets. 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. The Shaft-sinking Operation The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. Since early 1970?s skirt suction foundations (skirted foundation / bucket foundation) have been used as support for large fixed substructures or anchors for floating structures in offshore hydrocarbon development projects. In recent years skirt suction foundations are recognized as one of the solutions in foundations applicable to bridge substructures installed in waters, because skirt foundations have a wide variety of functions such as control of settlement during service life, less impact to environments during operation at installation site. This paper introduces general features of skirt suction foundations, and then discusses design practice of them for the application to bridge substructures, with reference to experiments in both laboratory and field.
