Some of the most difficult coal mine roof in the U.S. can be found in the Illinois Basin. Factors contributing to the high roof fall rate include: weak moisture-sensitive roof rock, high horizontal stress, and limited longwall mining. The depth of cover ranges from 90-1,000 ft and roof damage from horizontal stress can be severe. Moisture sensitive-roof rock is common above the Springfield-Harrisburg Herrin #5 and #6 seams in the Illinois Basin, and contributes to roof skin deterioration. The roof fall rate increases significantly in the humid summer months. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown, using lab and field studies, that highly moisture-sensitive roof rock can be directly correlated to poor roof conditions. Controlling the skin is the key to reducing rock fall injuries, and roof screening is, by far, the best remedy. Illinois Basin coal operators have been successful in reducing the number of rock fall injuries in recent years. NIOSH has documented best practices for screen installation which has resulted in safe, efficient operations. Other solutions to skin failure include: the use of denser five bolts per row patterns to reduce spans between bolts, systematic supplemental support in intersections, straps and large pans protecting operators, and air conditioning to remove moisture from the intake air.

The French research institute, INERIS, requested the assistance of the CSIR?s Division of Mining Technology in developing further precautionary measures against explosions in their collieries. In response to this approach, an on-board active suppression system was adapted to meet their mining requirements. This system is used on tunnelling machines in Germany where the machine is positioned in the middle of the tunnel, which is therefore not much wider than the machine itself. With this configuration, the machine is never away from the tunnel face during the cutting cycle. As a result, the possible volume in front of the machine of combustible gas requiring suppression is less than 50 m3. In South Africa this technology has been adapted to suit a two-cut mining method which entails greater distances from the face and thus much larger volumes of methane mixtures requiring suppression. The particular configuration of the Explo-Stop® system being investigated required the suppression of possible methane ignition volumes of up to 180 m3of a 9% per volume methane/air mixture. The volume is a consequence of the large cross-sectional area of French underground workings and of the two-cut mining method used in France. In order to take the second cut in the coal seam, the machine is pulled back a maximum distance of 4 m, leaving an air pocket in which gas can accumulate. The machine-mounted system is required to effectively suppress any flame ignited by such a large accumulated volume of methane. The results of the protocol tests done at Kloppersbos showed that the system was capable of suppressing all simulated methane ignitions for the prescribed conditions. This was achieved with a temperature increase of less than a 100°C at the operator?s position and without any flame being detected at this position.

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique represents an important technological advance in the construction of piles in soft soils. The possibility of excavation under the water table with no need for drilling fluids, along with high productivity, have resulted in this technique?s becoming widespread in many countries. However, CFA technology has limitations because of its difficulty in penetrating hard layers and cross strata with cobbles and boulders. In these situations, pile verticality may be an additional problem. The Cased Augered Pile (CAP) technique consists of penetrating the soil with an auger housed in a casing. Two independent rotary heads sliding along the rig mast operate the auger and the casing. By adjusting the height of the casing shoe and auger bit according to soil type, it is possible to drill piles in very severe conditions - in the presence of cobbles and boulders - and to socket the pile into the rock. The use of a steel casing enables improved pile verticality. Therefore, the CAP technique is also used to construct secant piles to be used as diaphragm walls. The limitations of this technology are the depth, usually no more than 27 m (88 feet), and the size of the rig that supports the drilling tool, no less than 70 t (77 short tons) in working conditions. This paper illustrates CAP technology, the drilling system, and the characteristics of concrete and steel reinforcement and offers a case study of the Palermo-Carini second railway line, which used CAP to construct the new 30 km (18.6 mi) railway line, 20 km (12.4 mi) of which passes through the very congested downtown area of Palermo. More than 300,000 m (186.4 mi) of piles have been drilled in dense calcarenite formations with unconfined compressive strength of 15-25 MPa (2,200-3,600 lb/inch2), soft clay, and silt formations.

The grades of commercial steel produced in large quantities can be divided into two general types from the standpoint of ingot structure— killed and rimmed. Killed steel covers a wide variety with carbon contents throughout the range of the steel portion of the iron-carbon diagram, and is the kind usually used in the production of alloy steels. Rimmed steel is normally associated with carbon ranges under 0.30 per cent, and is not yet used to a large extent in alloy practice, except for copper-bearing steels. The fundamental differences in the ingots made from these two types of steel can be seen most easily in Figs. 1 to 7. In the rimmed ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7 there are two lines of blowholes approximately parallel to the sides and coming together at the top and at the bottom of the ingot. In the killed ingots shown in Figs. 1 to 4 these blowholes arc not present. Also, the rimmed ingot has no well defined pipe, as compared to the deep pipe on the killed ingots, and there are numerous primary blowholes in the lower portion of the rimmed ingot perpendicular to the surface and close to it, while on the killed ingot there are no blowholes of this type in the ingot shown in Fig. 1 and very small ones close to the surface in the lower part of the ingot shown in Figs. 2 to 4. With respect to the presence of pipe and the primary blowholes, the structure may vary considerably in both rimmed and killed ingots, therefore these cannot be considered as fundamental structural characteristics differentiating the two types of steel. The primary blowholes in rimmed ingots may be much less pronounced than those in the ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7—as, for example, in "ingot iron," which is entirely free from them. An example of a cross section of an ingot-iron ingot is shown on page 16 of "Research and Methods of Analysis of Iron and Steel," published by the American Rolling Mill Co. (1920). A certain amount of pipe may also occur in rimmed ingots, though it is normally porous and not as well defined [or deep as in the killed ingot of Fig. 1. Recent trends of the mining project show that there will be more and more mechanized, largescale mining operations with complex process options to make low grade deposits economically feasible to develop. The global optimization of large scale, complex mine operations will become more important for the future mining. To serve the industry?s future needs, the OptiMine® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) for more than two decades, by using the special solution methodology based on the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) technique in the Operations Research (OR). The program has been beta-tested on more than 20 projects as a multi-time period scheduling and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving complex process options, many stockpiles and dumps, blending requirements, and truck hour limitations. In each project, various operational options are evaluated in OptiMine® to develop strategic planning to help defining company?s strategies and directions. This paper demonstrates how the OptiMine® can be used to optimize a large scale, complex production scheduling problem on a case study coming from real world project. The case study describes multi-pit mine production scheduling optimization with pit backfills in such a fashion that acid generating waste rocks are encapsulated to minimize environmental impact.

The method of thermal analysis, so important in the development of metallographie science, has of recent years been falling into disuse owing to the development of other physical methods which give result's easier of interpretation and which can be used for the study of either equilibrium or transitional conditions because they do not require a continuously changing temperature. Nevertheless thermal analysis remains useful in the study of reactions that take place rapidly, and the simplicity of the experimental technique and the general availability of the apparatus involved are point's in its favor. Theoretically, thermal analysis is capable of giving specific and latent hat measurements and therefore should permit the study of reactions on a more fundamental basis than any other method. It is, however,difficult or impossible to obtain quantitative heat measurements from cooling curves obtained in the usual way. Even if the furnace containing the sample is cooled or heated at a linear rate, or if a gradient furnaec is employed to maintain a constant rate over a large range of temperature, the heat flow from or to the specimen depends on its previous history, for the difference of temperature between the specimen and its surroundings varies. The emissivity of the specimen surface, moreover, is unlikely to be constant. The able mathematical analysis by Russrll,1 although it prevent,s misinterpretat,ion of data, has an effect rather the reverse of that intended, and leaves the reader doubtful of the possibility of ever obtaining quantitative results from thermal curves. Nothing can be done to apply thermal analysis t'o the study of equilibrium conditions of reactions that arc not completed at rates of temperature change above about 1° C;. per minute, and this unfortunatetly excludes most solid transformations in alloys.† For the determination of liquidus

Bauxite can be regarded as a mixture of hydrated aluminium oxides the predominant constituent - and oxides of iron and titanium, silica and silicates. Heterogeneous and non-crystaline, most bauxites vary in average composition from one deposit to another both in terns of impurities as well as the proportion of Gibbsita and the Monohydrates Diaspore and Boehmite. Iron levels (as Fe2O3) can vary from less than 1% to as high as 30% with the alumina content ranging from 40 to 6o%,. Gore than 90% of all bauxite mined in Guyana is used as feed for the - production of refractory grade calcined bauxite. There are -however, several speciality grades used in various industrial applications and these are characterised by the quality of the bauxite in particular ;,with regards to iron and silica levels which generally have to be low. The main speciality grades are designated Refractory, Abrasive and Chemical. Bauxitte is also used in the production of nigh alumina cements,, activated bauxite end in the manufacture of electrical insulators.

For deposits where a full assay suite of elements/oxides is available and where several variables are critical to the evaluation of the deposit, it is desirable for the estimated block values of all elements/oxides to sum to 100 per cent of the weight per cent. This is difficult to achieve in practice and the estimation methods used need to be designed to minimise bias of the key elements/oxides by ensuring that block estimates are consistent with the individual assays and that the estimated totals are as close as possible to 100 per cent.This paper presents a case study of two domains within a magnetite hematite deposit, one with a high level of drilling classified as Measured and one with a lower density of drilling classified as Indicated. Several estimation methods were tested to evaluate their ability to maintain consistency of the proportions of each element/oxide and sum to 100 per cent. The following methods were evaluated: ordinary kriging, co-kriging, inverse distance and min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) all as implemented in the Geovariances Isatis software.The comparisons showed that the MAF method produced the most robust estimates in terms of block totals and that grades and tonnages at the reporting cut-off were not significantly different between methods. At an individual block scale all methods produce artefacts that are less than desirable but can only be remedied by additional drilling.CITATION:Kentwell, D, 2015. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas I am permitted to give, a summary of some of the results obtained in leaching slimes tailings in a series of experiments conducted under my direction at Douglas, Ariz.. during the past year. While the test run for which the data are given deals with a particular case, much of the work is general in its application and may therefore be of interest. This work was done upon the ores of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. A description of the geology of the district will be-found in the paper by R. E. Somers published in the May, 1915, Bulletin of the Institute. The mineral is pyrite and chalcocite very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and a characteristic of all the ores is the large amount of alumina present. A representative analysis of the particular ore under consideration would be about as follows: Cu, per cent 2.35 S, percent 3.0 Ag, ounces per ton 0.05 CaO, per cent 0.5 Au None K202, per cent 4.0 Fe, per cent 1.5 SiO2, per cent 70.0 A120,, per cent 13.0 The leaching of the ore direct was early dismissed from consideration for the following reasons: 1. The ore would have to be quite finely crushed to liberate the mineral for leaching; concentrating after crushing would cost but a few cents a ton; and a higher total recovery would result from leaching tailings rather than ore. 2. Rough concentration would yield a suitable material for roasting to make sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in connection with the leaching scheme. 3. Such a program put the question of cost vs. recovery on a basis where flotation and discarding of tailings were directly comparable.

Discussion of the paper of K. Huessener, (Trans., vol. 53, pp. 402 to 4333, and of the papers of Linn Bradley, H. D. EGbert and W. W. Strong, pp. 303, 319. R. J. WysoR, So. Bethlehem, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*). —At our plant (Bethlehem Steel Co.), we have had several Bradshaw burners under course of construction and erection for some time, but up to the present we have not had opportunity to put them in service. I regret that I can not take part in the discussion with some actual results from these burners. Mr. Huessener properly emphasizes the importance of obtaining the highest combustion temperature practicable in boiler practice, which demands a near approach to perfect combustion conditions. The ideal burner is the one which, while meeting the various mechanical requirements, fulfills the above condition under a wide range of gas pressure. The question as to the relative value of hot raw gas and cold washed gas for boiler use is a very interesting one. I think that in the past the importance of low temperature of washed gas sometimes has been overemphasized. Mr. Huessener has pointed out that so far as temperature is concerned, no advantage accrues in washing gas below 100" F. In many plants, there is a notable operating economy in using furnace cooling water, which is appreciably warmer than the supply water. However, in a given type of washer, other conditions being constant, the lower the exit gas temperature the lower will be the dust content; this is equivalent to saying that the more washing water is used, other conditions being constant, the lower will be the dust content of the exit gas. For each type of washer there is a certain desired average temperature difference between inlet water and exit gas, concomitant with known average dust and moisture contents, and with economical operation. With the present tendency toward smaller stove checkers, it is generally agreed that gas for stove use should be cleaned to a dust content of 0.20 grain or less. The method employed and extent of gas cleaning are clearly problems for individual furnace plants. As a general proposition, wet washing is decidedly more attractive for furnaces smelting soft, fine Lake ores than for those reducing chiefly hard, lumpy ores, such as the foreign and domestic magnetites. In the former case the average moisture content of the gas is probably 35 grains per cubic foot, the dust content is relatively high and the top temperature relatively low. In our plant, the ore mixtures consist almost exclusively of hard magnetites. The average dust content of the gas leaving the dust catcher will average only about 2 grains and the moisture about 12 grains per cubic foot, corresponding to saturation at about 83" F. The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

"There are many problems for electronic devices and parts which were caused electrostatic damage by static electricity. It is necessary for prevention of electrostatic charge to decrease surface resistivity of material using electroconductive coating. Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. developed metal oxide type electroconductive pigment PASSTRAN (trade mark) Type-IV which is barium sulfate coated with SnOz(Sb) thin electroconductive layer. This paper shows about pigment characteristics and film condition of antistatic transparency paint which contained PASS TRAN.L.IntroductionRecently rapid development of electronics technology diffused electronic devices and products to Office, Factory, Laboratory and our life. But the other side, there are many problems for electronics parts which were caused electrostatic damage under static electricity. Demand of antistatic materials were become lager by this situation.There is close relationship between surface resistivity of material and static electricity. If the surface resistivity of object is enough low (under 109 Q /Sq), static electricity is dissipated quickly. So it is necessary for prevention of electrostatic charge to decrease surface resistivity of material using electroconductive coating.1) There are many type of electroconductive materials, for example, carbon black, metal powder, electroconductive polymer and so on. Especially, carbon black is used for general purpose by reason of its low cost, but it has big problem of black color. It can not get any color without black, and it caused contamination of carbon.In recent years, metal oxide electroconductive pigment (ECP) was developed and used for special purpose which demands transparent coating or easy dispersion to make ECP paint or endurance under hard environment and so on. Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. developed electroconductive pigment PASSTRAN Type-IV which is BaS04 coated with electro-conductive Tin oxide layer."

A compound stability diagram was constructed by the Bureau of Mines for the Zn-Fe-S-O system to show the phases that should be thermodynamically stable at various temperatures, oxygen pressures, and SO2 pressures. The diagram was demonstrated to have good qualitative value for predicting stable phases that may, in turn, be related to the recovery of zinc in the leaching phase of the electrolytic zinc process. The study showed that roasting temperature is the most Significant variable in preventing roaster formation of zinc ferrite, which is directly related to subsequent extraction of zinc in the leaching step.

The effects of increasing hydrogen content, introducing a notch, and changing the strain rate on properties of titanium and one of its alloys were investigated over a range of testing temperatures from —196° to 200°C. Both high purity and commercial purity A-55 titanium were used as representative a materials, while a commercial Ti-8 pct Mn alloy was used for an a-P alloy. It was found possible to analyze the data, using the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature concept. Increasing hydrogen, the presence of a notch, and increasing the testing speed raised the transition temperature for the a materials. The presence of hydrogen and notches raised the transition temperature of the a-B alloy also. However, increasing the testing speed generally decreased the transition temperature of the a-p alloy. IN previous papers, the authors have shown that hydrogen is most detrimental to the notch-bend impact toughness of a-titanium' and to the tensile ductility of a-B titanium alloys.' These general effects have been confirmed by Kessler and co-workers," and by Kotfila and Erbin." Kessler showed that the slower strain rate in notch-rupture tests was a more sensitive measure of hydrogen embrittle-ment of a-B alloys than the tensile test. In the present paper the authors cover, with tensile and notch-bend tests, the effect of testing speed, notches, and testing temperature on hydrogen em-brittlement. High purity and commercial purity titanium, examples of u materials, and a commercial a-,f3 Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to correlate the factors producing embrittlement. Materials The high purity titanium for this investigation was obtained by arc-melting crystal bar from Foote Mineral Co. into 1 Ib ingots. As-cast hardnesses for these ingots ranged from 60 to 90 Brinell. The arc-melted ingots were forged to % in. diam rods at 1470°F. These rods were swaged to & in. diam at room temperature prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The commercial A-55 titanium and the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were obtained from Rem-Cru Titanium Inc., as % in. diam rod. The A-55 titanium was hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam at 1300°F prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The a-p C-11OM alloy was hydrogenated prior to hot swaging to 1/4 in. roc1 at 1300°F. Hydrogenation prior to fabrication permitted testing of the a-P alloy in the equilibrated and stabilized condition. The equilibration and stabilization treatment used was an air anneal for 1 hr at 1300°F, followed by furnace cooling to 1100°F and then air cooling. Hydrogenation was done in a Sieverts apparatus described previously.' The hydrogenation treatment consisted of heating for 1/4 to 1/2 hr at 820 °C in purified hydrogen, slow cooling to 680"C, holding 1 hr for homogenization, and rapid cooling to room temperature. Intended hydrogen levels for the a-tita-nium materials were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 430 ppm. For the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy, the intended hydrogen levels were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 1100 ppm. The material for the 0.5 atomic pct level of hydrogen was vacuum annealed prior to hydrogenation to increase the accuracy of the addition. Vacuum annealing to remove hydrogen consisted of heating for 6 hr at 820°C, and resulted in a hydrogen content of about 10 to 15 ppm. When hydrogen contents were above 0.5 atomic pct—100 ppm—the hydrogen was added without prior vacuum annealing.

A refraction model is available for recording velocities which permit the determination of weathered zone depths as well as the .depths to other subsurface formations. The dual purpose (Refroction- Displacement) systems ore utilized for velocity studies and displacement - oir blast measurements.

J. S. Unger,* Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion?).-I heartily agree with the author's suggestion, near the close of the paper, that greater uniformity in the making and use of brick is desirable. The effect of the manner of laying the brick, the mortar or cement used, the necessity of standardizing the shapes, the elimination of irregular or poorly designed brick, and the necessity for uniform operating conditions were pointed out by me some years ago. Many factors influence the quality of firebricks. The following figures obtained from bricks during their making or after completion show the need for greater uniformity in their quality. These results were obtained from regular commercial bricks, shipped to the consumer. In many cases the samples were from the same car load.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies on four makes of Japanese automobiles, three 1981 and one 1982 model years, received from three manufacturers to determine if their materials composition would present problems to the current technology used to process junk automobiles for metal recovery. One of each make of automobile was hand-dismantled to determine the materials composition. In addition, two nearly identical automobiles of each make were shredded at a commercial operation where all metal products and rejects were collected for analysis to determine metal and nonmetal distribution. The average weight of the four automobiles to be dismantled, less batteries, tools, and fluids, was 1,938.3 lb. The weight was distributed as 1,472.9 lb. ferrous and 115.6 lb nonferrous metals, 275.2 lb combustibles, 72.3 lb noncombustibles, and 2.3 lb electrical components. The dismantled automobiles, less gas tanks, fluids, tools, wheels, tires, and batteries, which were all removed from the automobiles that were shredded, contained an average of 1,389.1 lb ferrous and 101.6 lb nonferrous metals, 305.7 lb nonmetals, and 2.3 lb electrical components. In comparison, materials collected from the shredded automobiles averaged 1,304 lb ferrous metals, 80 lb nonferrous metals, and 341 lb landfill materials. There were no materials used in the manufacture of the late model Japanese automobiles that should present handling or processing problems to the steelmaking or secondary metal recyclers.
