MORE or less contradictory findings as to the most satisfactory feed for concentration tables of the Wilfley type is shown by the diversity of opinion among experimenters. Prof. R. H. Richards,l as a result of his work, favors classification. On the other hand the work of Messrs. Cox, Gibbins, and Porter,' of McGill University, points in general to the desirability of screen-sized feed The ore used was obtained from the West mill of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co., Kellogg, Idaho, and consisted of argentiferous galena in a gangue of quartzite and siderite. The natural feed was taken from the launder supplying the Fahrenwald classifier. Classified feed was collected from each of the ten spigots of this same classifier. From the natural feed the screen-sized feed was pre- pared in the laboratory. All three types of table feed were therefore derived from the actual mill circuit of a large plant.

The hydrophobic character of sapphire surfaces in SDS solutions was examined with respect to the aggregative nature of the adsorbed surfactant phase. It was found that, at equilibrium, sapphire surfaces having adsorbed SDS bi-layers exhibited no contact angle. Conversely, when the adsorbed SDS was found to be mi-cellar in nature, sapphire surfaces developed significant hydrophobic character. The surface states as detected by Fr -IRIIRS conformational analysis were found to be reversible with temperature. The variation in adsorption density with temperature was studied by in situ Fr-IRIIRS. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated to be -1.6 kcal/mole. Although the adsorbed SDS was found to undergo a reversible phase change between 25 and 32°C, similar to SDS in solution, the extent of adsorption was not reversible with temperature.

The U-Cr system is of the simple eutectic type with some solid solubility of chromium in r and ß uranium. The eutectic occurs at 20 atomic pet Cr and melts at 859°C. The maximum solubility of chromium in y uranium is 4 atomic pet at the eutectic temperature, and in ß uranium the solubility is estimated to be 1 atomic pet. y-ß and ß-a transformations were found to occur at 737°estimatedt° and 612°C respectively. DURING 1944 and 1945, the U-Cr constitution diagram was studied in this laboratory as a part of a research program on uranium metallurgy in the Manhattan Project, and the work was described in a Manhattan Project report issued in December 1945. This paper is based on that report, which has been declassified. Prior to this study, it had been shown by other Manhattan Project workers that the low Cr-U alloys could be quenched to retain the form of uranium. Experimental The uranium used in this work was massive metal prepared in this laboratory and contained less than 0.1 pct of other elements. The chromium was 200 mesh powder obtained from the A. D. McKay Co. and was found on analysis to be 99.5 pct Cr with 0.3 pct Fe the major impurity. Alloys, weighing 400 to 600 g, were prepared by induction heating the components to 1700°C in slip-cast ZrO, crucibles in a vacuum of 3x103 mm Hg. TO prevent too violent agitation of the melt by the induction field with subsequent crucible breakage and sample loss, the ZrO2 crucible was placed in a graphite crucible, which was surrounded by a layer of powdered carbon insulation 2 to 3 cm thick. Polished vertical sections of the alloys were examined microscopically to confirm their homogeneity. Heating and cooling curves were taken on the alloys by reheating them in ZrO, crucibles to 1200°C and inserting a mullite-protected chromel-alumel thermocouple into the melt by means of a slip seal in the vacuum head of the furnace. A recording potentiometer traced the curves which had a slope of from 3" to 6" per min. Samples of the alloys were prepared for metallo-graphic examination by conventional mechanical polishing techniques followed by an electrolytic polish in an ethylene glycol-phosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol bath. The structure of the alloys was brought out clearly by this procedure so that no further etching was required. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from drillings from the top, center, and bottom sections of the alloys. The uranium was determined by titra-tion with Ce(SO1)2, while the chromium was titrated with FeSO,; the uranium and chromium totaled at least 99.6 pct in all of the alloys prepared. X-ray samples were prepared by filing bulk specimens in a helium-filled glove box and annealing the resulting powder in a zirconium-gettered helium atmosphere. A 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera and a Weyland nonsymmetrical self-focusing camera were used with filtered copper radiation to obtain the powder X-ray diffraction data. Results The data obtained in this study have been combined to construct the constitution diagram of the U-Cr system shown in Fig. 1 where the arrests observed in cooling curves are indicated by dots. The liquidus arrest was quite distinct in thermal data taken on alloys in the range 0 to 20 atomic pct Cr. The eutectic arrest was not observed in studies on the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples but appeared in the 7.5 pct samples, which suggested some solubility of chromium in y uranium. On quenching from 859 °C, the 2.5 pct sample showed but one phase while the 4.5 pct sample contained a small amount of the eutectic along the grain boundaries; see Figs. 2 and 3. From this the maximum solubility of chromium in r uranium has been set at 4 pct. X-ray studies on these samples showed that the r phase was not retained at room temperature by quenching, but in each case a pattern was observed .which has been identified with the ß phase of uranium. Thermal data show the y-ß transformation of uranium lowered to 737°C as a consequence of this solubility. On quenching from the ß range (660°C), precipitation of chromium in the primary uranium is observed in the 2.5 and 4.5 pct Cr samples (see Figs. 4 and 5),

Coke oven gas (COG) injection is considered as one of feasible measures to reduce carbon emission of BF. The effects of COG injection on the reduction of iron-bearing burdens were numerically simulated by means of multi-fluid BF model, which revealed that with increasing COG injection rate, solid temperature gradually decrease, in-furnace H2 concentration increases, the reduction of magnetite and wustite by H2 is evidently accelerated, the reaction rate of wustite by H2 reduction is enhanced and the reduction degree of mixed burdens is strengthened. Under this hydrogen-enriched condition, metallurgical properties of iron-bearing burdens were experimentally investigated. The GB/T13242-91 test results showed that with increasing COG injection rate, the reduction swelling index of oxidized pellets decreases while the reduction ratio of pellets increases. The softening-melting tests suggested that softening interval of mixed burdens increases from 163.6 to 228.3 °C while melting interval decreases from 147.3 to 92.4 °C. The cohesive zone moves downwards and becomes narrow. The permeability of mixed burdens is improved. In terms of metallurgical properties of iron-bearing burdens, COG injection benefits to improve BF performance.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., a wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has developed the Peñasquito property to produce an average annual production of 120 kilo tonnes of lead containing 0.5 million oz gold and 30 million oz silver and 250 kilo tonnes of zinc containing 20 thousand oz gold and 1.5 million oz silver.. The Peñasquito property covers a 39,000 hectare area in the western half of the Concepción del Oro district in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, approximately 24°45'N latitude/101°30'W longitude. The sulfide reserves are 1,009 million tonnes containing 3.33 million tonnes of lead, 7.26 million tonnes of zinc, 16.5 million ounces of gold and 1,000 million ounces of silver. This paper describes the work to justify the installation of HPGR to process the crushed SAG mill pebbles. The SAG mill-Ball mill and Cone crusher (SABC) grinding circuit is an accepted grinding circuit to optimize power consumption relative to throughput. The installation of a HPGR to process the Cone crusher product is the next step in optimizing the power consumption relative to throughput. The concern expressed by some on not moving on this change in grinding circuit was the capital and operating cost of a HPGR. The pebbles from the SAG mill can be the more abrasive and are the harder particles of the ore. Goldcorp investigated the wear and processing costs of installing a HPGR to treat the crushed pebbles. The conclusion was the installation would be a very positive economic factor in the operation of Peñasquito. This is the first application of the use of HPGR to process crushed pebbles. Minera Peñasquito and M3 Engineering selected Polysius to provide a Polycom 2417 with twin 3,000 kW drives. A comprehensive test program at Polysius has shown for 7% higher circuit power it is possible to get approx 23% higher tonnage. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies and with proper control of the transfer size from the SAG to Ball mill circuit there is the potential to achieve 65,000 mtpd per line or a 30% total capacity increase. The cost of power for this increase in grinding capacity is 4.8 kWh/tonne.

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"

For the past five years the University of Queenslandhas, through its various workshops, been preaching to Australia that there was a potentially hazardous situation from earthquakes for urban Australia. A few people outside The University accepted this, but largely the warnings fell on deaf ears.The 1989 Newcastle earthquake changed that per-ception. The most important lessons to emerge from Newcastle were (i)the realization that in continental areas small earthquakes cause widespread damage:(ii)the local geology of an area is of great importance in the damage done by an earthquake.These two factors clearly indicate that, in the future, we must take far greater account of the "Urban Geology" of an area. This paper discusses the need for urban geology and its impact on seismic risk and compares that with the traditional methods of assessing seismic risk.

O complexo Minas-Rio da Anglo American iniciou suas operações em agosto de 2014. A usina de tratamento produziu, em 2016, cerca de 15,5 milhões de toneladas secas de concentrado. O minério, explorado no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG), passa pelas etapas de cominuição, classificação, concentração e separação sólido-líquido antes de ser bombeado por 529 km até o município de São João da Barra (RJ), onde é filtrado, estocado e embarcado para exportação. A lama e o rejeito da flotação são enviados para um espessador de 90 metros de diâmetro. Testes de sedimentação em bancada mostraram o efeito positivo da sedimentação dessa mistura de lamas e rejeito. A lama, composta predominantemente por partículas finas de hematita e argilo minerais, se adere a ao quartzo do rejeito, que possui maior diâmetro. Apesar dessa mistura aumentar a velocidade de sedimentação, ela propicia a formação de uma espuma com elevada estabilidade, devido a presença de finos da deslamagem e espumante da flotação. Foram feitos testes de bancada objetivando-se avaliar o efeito da retirada do rejeito da alimentação do espessador. A partir dos resultados foram traçados cenários com diferentes participações desse material e suas implicações no processo de sedimentação foram estimados.

"New York City has unique geologic conditions which must be considered when designing pile foundations. Where shallow foundations are not feasible, the City's subsurface conditions require a variety of deep foundation systems, ranging from high capacity rock socketed piles, to piles end-bearing on bedrock, to friction piles bearing in alluvial or glacial deposits. Pile load testing is essential in confirming pile capacities as pile analyses include assumptions on soil and soil-pile response, and pile driving equipment. Load test results must be interpreted to estimate the long-term pile behavior. Except for lightly loaded driven piles, the New York City Building Code (the Code) requires that pile capacities be confirmed by static load testing. The Code provides the number of static load tests required, test procedures, and acceptance criteria. In the last few decades, methods other than static load testing have been developed including dynamic and rapid (pseudo-static) load tests. Recently, those methods have also been employed on several projects in New York City. The traditional approach to pile load testing in New York City is discussed herein including engineering involved in the analyses of test data with examples. In addition, several projects which included non-static load testing are discussed INTRODUCTIONPile load testing complements the subsurface information and pile design by providing further data on pile-soil interaction for the selected pile type and installation method. Traditional approaches to pile load testing in New York City involve static load tests to verify the design capacity of the piles for a given minimum factor of safety.In the late 1950's, Dr. Phillip C. Rutledge summarized his views on the philosophy of pile foundations in an unpublished, in-house document. He viewed pile foundations as good illustrations of pertinent and impertinent aspects of geotechnical engineering. In the analyses of piles he divided engineering into four general types:(a) Theoretical engineering in which decisions are made based on theoretical analyses. This represents ideal engineering, in which all factors affecting the pile design are well established or, at least, few simplifying assumptions with known effects on the analyses are made."

"The two Alumbrera 36ft (10.97m)dia. SAG mills were sized, using the FDW ""Grindpower 'I program, to treat an average of 1852 tph each. This paper describes how modelling of the shell lifter design, using the Millsoft program, identified milling inefficiencies caused by poor charge motion. This explained the ""as built"" circuit's inability to achieve the throughput rates predcted by the circuit's designer. Use of the Millsoft program to design a new, dramatically different lifter configuration, in conjunction with a different approach to variable speed drive utilization, has resulted in an improved charge motion and a 30% increase in hard ore milling rates. The new lifter design has allowed the designer's predicted average throughput rates to be achieved.IntroductionThe Alumbrera project grinding circuit consists of two 36ft dia. X 17ft EGL, 13 500 kW, variable speed, gearless drive SAG mills coupled to four 20ft dia. X 30ft EGL, 6 000 kW fixed speed, gear driven, ball mills. The circuit is configured as two identical grinding aisles, each consisting of one SAG mill and two ball mills. No pebble crushing circuit was installed due to the expected absence of a critical size fraction in the first years of production. However, the grinding circuit layout does incorporate space for a pebble crushing retrofit. At present, only about 5% - 10% of the new mill feed reports as trommel oversize and is recycled back to each SAG mill using a water cannon.The circuit was designed to be ball mill limited and to treat the four major Alumbrera ore types at rates varying between 68 000 tpd, and 89 750 tpd, depending on ore hardness. Average throughput rate, and hence nominal design rate, for the grinding circuit was 80 000 tpd (1 852tph per line at 90% availability)."

Introduction Competitive analysis is the collection and evaluation of data on a product, a product line or on an entire industry. Much of the focus of competitive analysis centers on production volume and the price targets of the competitors. In actual practice capacity may be used in place of production volume. Similarly, unit production costs and individual producing units - mines, mills, smelters, refineries - may be the targets of the analysis. The purpose of competitive analysis is to provide information for strategic planning. The analysis will locate the position of the company in the industry and define the competitive margin -- or lack of a margin - between the company and other producers. The analysis can show the current situation and may be expanded to examine the outlook for the future. The forecast option is particularly valuable because it will show the opportunities for new project development or the expansion of current production. Similarly, the forecast will show the potential threat from new entrants, and may provide early warning to reconsider operations that may become uncompetitive in the future. Production cost analysis is a clearly understood means to evaluate producers and estimate the outlook for their profitability. The cumulative cost for the industry outlines the supply structure and defines the marginal cost of production used in developing price forecast as explained in the sub- sequent section of this paper. Competitive analysis is particularly important to the mining industry, notably to metal producers. The final product is typically a purified metal conforming to standards, and interchangable with the output of other producers, i.e. a fungible commodity. Brand loyalty is questionable in the mineral industry. Consumers will show a preference for specific brands, but this preference will be limited to a premium of several percent over the general market price. Price and assurance of supply are the keys to marketing success. Assurance of supply depends on geopolitical considerations and production capabilities. Price will be closely related to cost of production and a thorough competitive analysis should describe the cost structure of the industry. This snapshot will locate one's own position and provide an immediate and readily understandable evaluation of the hazards and opportunities inherent in this position. In the following section we shall discuss elements, methods and sources for competitive evaluation. ELEMENTS OF COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS The practice of systematic collection and analysis of data on competition is hardly a new concept; see, for example, Wall (1) or Porter (2). However, most discussions have been in the context of conventional industrial or manufacturing industries, with a focus on product lines and brand marketing. These considerations are not irrelevant to mining but they do have only a limited application. The key to success in the mining industry is minimizing the cost of production. However, this simple concept becomes complex when we consider relevant costs and the planning horizon. Production costs include the factors consumed in production, namely labor, fuel, energy, materials and supplies. The cost also includes purchased and contracted services such as freight, smelting and refining, sampling and sales required to convert ore to the finished metal. Royalties and ad valorem taxes paid on gross production are direct expenses, as is the cost of administration required by the production units. The sum of these outflows is the total cash cost, the expense that has to be paid in cash in order to continue production. Indirect costs incurred by a producer will commonly include allocated headquarters expenses, as well as the capital charges associated with equity investment and debt. Profit is not generally considered an indirect cost even though it represents the cost of using the owner's capital; similarly, income taxes represent the government's participation in the profits of the enterprise. "Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2Si05) and are used in the ceramic industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. ""Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite 2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs where strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags is desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals.""At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite has given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain ware.""3/The possible economic value of the sillimanite schist in the piedmont Plateau was first recognized by Dr. L. L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, who published an article in the Engineering and Mining Journal, August 1943, on an occurrence of sillimanite schist in South Carolina.The Bureau of Mines was interested in developing a large source of sillimanite to relieve the shortage of high-grade refractories, and initiated a project to locate the ore-bearing areas in Georgia and South Carolina and to develop the most favorable ones.Two hundred and seventy-eight outcrops of sillimanite-bearing schists were found by a Bureau of Mines engineer.4/ The schist occurs irregularly throughout a belt extending from Talbot County, Georgia; to Spartanburg County, South Carolina, about 220•miIes long and approximately 15 miles in maximum width. The Bureau drilled four areas of the more coarsely crystallized schist in Georgia and South Carolina:In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon; chief; conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work; and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch;.R. G. Knickerbocker; chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

Investigation of the discharge duration power and current relation required for ignition. The current and power amplitude-discharge time curve was found to flatten out over 3 ms. It is concluded that discharges having at least 3 ms power maximum are required for reliable testing of the ignition limit for resistive circuits. Investigation of the effect of molten cathode on the discharge duration and igniting ability of the discharge. The surface tension of the liquid metal causes a very fast separation and consequently a much shorter discharge duration than the solid electrode would have. The minimum discharge voltage effect overrides the effects of the temperature of electrode, material, or atmosphere. Investigation of the effect of different surface layers on the discharge duration. Oxides and sulfates were found to give significantly longer duration than the "clean" metal itself in most cases. The lowest ignition current was obtained with CdS04 coatings. Ignition was obtained with 0.7A at 30V, which is below the corresponding minimum igniting current obtained from the BASEEFA curve for circuits containing Cd, Zn or Mg.

Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. Undergrorlnd combustion operations were initiated in a 60-acre Bartlesville sand "shoe-string" reservoir in Allen Connty, Kans., in 1956. Tests in separate patterns were conducted using various co~nbinations of air and recycle gas to propagate combustion fronts from the injection toward the producing wells. These patterns were made up of 6 injection and 20 prodrrcing wells Gas and liquid prorluctiorz from each pattern was measured on an individual-well basis, and comparisons were made between the three patterns to ascertain the relative effects of injected gas composition on production behavior. Breakthrough of the combustion front at a well was characterized by an increase in water production from the well followed by an increase in bottomhole temperatrrre to approximately 250" F. After burning fronts had broken through at five producing wells, operations were terminated in 1960. From the total project approximately 79,000 bbl of oil were produced during thermal operations at a cumulative produced GOR of 23 Mcf/bbl. No appreciable change in the character of the produced crude was observed. Combustion in the reservoir was maintained with injected gas compositions ranging fronz 6 per cent oxygen in recycle gas to 100 per cent air. lnjectiotz of large quantities of recycle gas resulted in higher producing GOR's from offset wells than were measured from a pattern into ~vhich straight air ~vas injected. The air required to move the combustion front through I acre-ft of reservoir was computed to be 20 MMscf. This valrre was found to be relatively independent of the quantities of recycle gas injected. The recovery efficiency from the swept area was esti~izated to be about 59 per cent. Areas swept were similar in shape to tlzose obtained with a laboratory potentiometric model. Samples of sund taken from behind the burning front by coring indicated almost total oil removal from the sand. Petrographic analysis of the core samples indicated that the sand had been heated to peuk temperature of rlbout 1,200" F. No rignificant difference in peak temperature was forrnd in two areas where compositions of injected gas were quite different. Compression costs for thermal recovery were estimated to be $1,20/bhl of produced oil. INTRODUCTION The use of the "forward combustion" process as an oil recovery method has received a great deal of attention. This method involves ignition of the formation in an injection well, followed by propagation of a combustion front through the reservoir. Combustion is maintained by the injection of an oxygen-containing gas to react with reservoir hydrocarbons. As the flame front progresses through the reservoir, oil and formation water are vaporized, driven forward in the gaseous phase and recondensed in the cooler part of the formation. Results from other tests have since been reported by Walter,3 by Moss, White and McNeil,' and by Gates and Ramey." ach of these tests essentially utilized a single injection well surrounded by four or more producing wells. Sinclair Research, Inc., elected to do field experimental work using a number of test patterns in a single field in order that comparisons between various operating schemes could be made. The site selected and purchased in 1955 for this experimental work was a 60-acre Bartlesville sand reservoir located in Allen County, Kans. Combustion operations were initiated in mid-1956. Between that time and termination of the project in mid-1960, combustion fronts were propagated from injection wells to producers in three separate well patterns, using different mixtures of air and recycle gas. The test was terminated before sweep of the three patterns was complete so that information about the effect of combustion on the swept areas could be obtained by coring. Results from the test in the form of injection and producing well performance have been carefully recorded, and these form the general basis for this paper. DESCRIPTION OF RESERVOIR The reservoir in which the combustion tests were conducted is a Bartlesville sand "shoe-string", typical of a number of small reservoirs in Southeastern Kansas. Average reservoir characteristics are shown in Table 1. Fig. 1 is an isopachous map of the producing sand showing the reservoir to be approximately 400-ft wide and 2,500-ft long. Maximum net productive sand thickness is 21 ft. Fig. 2 shows a typical core analysis obtained by coring with water-base mud. The reservoir has no appreciable dip and is closed on the sides by degradation of sand into shale. The main body of sand is heavily laminated with shale stringers, which are not continuous between wells. The United States is totally dependent on imports for all primary chromite and most ferrochrome supplies. Although the United States imports chromite and ferrochrome from a number of countries, the long-term future of chromite supplies appears to lie in southern Africa (Republic of South Africa and Zimbabwe) where 88 percent of known world reserves exist. Floreover, low mining costs and the availability of low-cost electricity for ferrochrome production gives South Africa a comparative advantage over most other chromite and ferrochrome-producing nations. A well-known problem faced by the United States is that when viewed from a longer-term perspective, the major sources of supply of metallurgical grade chromite and ferrochrome may be subject to disruption. The three countries that have caused the greatest concern have been the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and Zimbabwe. South Africa presents a particularly difficult problem because it may be subject to internal political unrest and/or U. N, economic sanctions. South Africa has increased its share of world chromium production from about 30 percent in 1968 to 62 percent in 1978.1

In producing feed for a lead blast furnace, concentrates analyzing 70 to 80 pct Pb are sintered to produce a physically acceptable low-sulfur product which contains only about 50 pct Pb. Mixtures of PbS with varying amounts of SiO2, CaO, Fe 20., and ZnS were heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C; the products were cooled and examined to determine the problems involved in producing sinter with substantially higher lead levels. Microscopic and electron microprobe studies of the above products as well as experimental and commercial sinters indicate that sinters consist essentially of lead silicates, lead-zinc silicate, calcium zinc silicate, and spinel (ferrite). Lead oxide and lead sulfate areas appear to result from insufficient mixing of the materials prior to sintering. The data give an insight into the process and show that sintering results from a complex interaction of all constituents and that sintering is not simply a matter of diluting the mixture to control the oxidation of lead sulfide.

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. As the 2018 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2018 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 344. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2018 Transactions consists of a total of 59 technical papers, encompassing all 25 papers published in 2018 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 70) and all 26 papers published in 2018 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 35). Additionally, this volume contains 8 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2018 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume. The new year brings an exciting change. The publication of Transactions will cease with this volume. Instead, our Minerals & Metallurgical Processing journal has the new name of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (MME), and Transactions as well as the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering are incorporated into MME. The journal is published in partnership with Springer Nature, and all SME members have free electronic access to the journal.
