While underground coal technology has progressed over time, regulations on coal dust have not kept up ? the most recent rules are more than 80 years old. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a joint survey recently on coal particle ranges as measured in US coal mine samples. In underground coal mines, dust explosions are prevented by the addition of enough rock dust (usually limestone) to make the total dust mixture inert. The rock dust acts as a heat sink for the dispersed dust mixture by reducing the temperature below the value needed to propagate an explosion. Federal regulations require 65% in combustible content in intake airways and 80% incombustible content in return airways, where the coal dust is assumed to be finer in size. The regulations also require an additional 1% incombustible for each 0.1% methane in the ventilating air in intakes and 0.4% additional incombustible for each 0.1% methane in returns.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito do nióbio e do vanádio no aço estrutural, conforme norma brasileira NBR 7007 AR 415, quando laminado a quente a diferentes temperaturas de reaquecimento, nos resultados de limite de escoamento, limite de resistência e alongamento. Os demais parâmetros de processo que influenciam as propriedades mecânicas dos aços como temperatura e taxa de deformação de cada passe, temperatura de acabamento e taxa de resfriamento foram controlados e considerados constantes. Os resultados do ensaio de tração mostraram que os limites de escoamento e resistência da corrida com vanádio foram bem superiores aos obtidos da corrida com nióbio. O alongamento, em contrapartida, foi reduzido na corrida com vanádio, mas acima do valor mínimo especificado pela norma. Além disso, na corrida com nióbio, foi observado aumento das tensões de escoamento e resistência com o aumento da temperatura de reaquecimento de tarugos. Esses resultados propiciam uma maior flexibilidade da usina em trabalhar com os dois tipos de liga dependendo das condições de mercado e operacionais.

This paper presents results of an experimental study performed on the role of calcium sulfate present in flotation water on sphalerite flotation in the Pb/Cu circuit (non Cu-activated sphalerite) and in the Zn circuit (Cu-activated sphalerite). In the Pb/Cu circuit calcium ions adsorb on the negatively-charged sphalerite favoring xanthate adsorption and therefore making sphalerite floatable; experimental measurements show sphalerite contact angle increases with calcium concentration while xanthate adsorption onto sphalerite increases with the increase of pH and calcium concentration. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) eventually present due to calcium sulfate precipitation is not detrimental to flotation at this stage since it is negatively charged at pH 9 and therefore, does not adhere onto the surface of negatively-charged sphalerite. In the zinc circuit, Cu-activated sphalerite decreases its negative charge (or even becomes positively charged) and develops some hydrophobicity due to the polysulfide produced by Cu-activation. At this stage calcium ions do not interact with the mineral surface and therefore do not favor xanthate adsorption; nevertheless, precipitated gypsum particles do adhere onto the mineral surface, greatly affecting its floatability (e.g., contact angle). Addition of sodium carbonate to dissolve gypsum and to precipitate calcium as calcium carbonate, which disperses in the bulk of the suspension, effectively restores mineral hydrophobicity. SEM observations coupled with EDS analysis clearly illustrate and support the above sequence of events.

INTRODUCTION IN general, during all electrowinning processes, large volumes of gas are liberated at the cathodes of the electrolytic cells. Most of this gas escapes from the electrolyte, but much of it may be absorbed or entrapped in the metal being plated. In many cases, this is not objectionable, but since it is liberated when the metal is heated, it is a potential source of trouble where the metal has to be heated or melted. Since this gas is principally hydrogen, in escaping from a melt it may cause minor explosions and scattering of the molten metal, while in other cases it has been reported to make the metal rise in the molds when cast. Therefore such metals would be more generally useful if all or most of the gas were removed before they were used. In an earlier investigation' the gas content of electrolytic manganese was determined and methods found for removing most of it without detrimentally affecting the properties of the metal. In this paper results of a similar investigation on electrolytic chromium are presented. APPARATUS The apparatus used in these investigations is essentially the same as that used in the manganese work' and is shown in Fig I. It consists of sample chamber A, vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The pressure in the system is measured by the mercury manometer B. Changes in ' gas volume are measured by volume gauge C which is essentially another mercury manometer in which . the volume of the mercury column is large and can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of 100 cc for a 61 cm length. Larger changes in gas volume can be accommodated by auxiliary containers attached to the system at F. The sample is heated by furnace G, the temperature of which is regulated within ± 5°C by an automatic controller. The only change in the apparatus was the sample container which was made smaller because of the chromium metal's containing more gas than the manganese metal and a smaller sample was used. METHOD The measurements were made as follows: The complete system when cold was evacuated and refilled with H2 until all the air was removed. It was then refilled with H2 to the desired pressure, as indicated on manometer B. The temperature was then raised to the desired value and as gas was either liberated from or absorbed by the sample, the height of well H was changed to alter the volume of the system so as to keep the pressure constant. In determining rates of liberation of gas, volume readings were taken at convenient time intervals depending on the rapidity with which the gas was liberated. Reported is work done on processing of steel mill effluents in the areas of dewatering and separation. Much of the waste from these operations is in the form of sludges from scrubbers, in which the primary constituent is iron oxide. Recycling of the sludge&apos;s magnetic fraction has become economically attractive in order to reduce the overall volume placed in landfills. The objective of this research is to determine the effectiveness of combining magnetic and cyclonic forces, to recover iron oxide particles from waste water stream, while decreasing the volume to be disposed. Three different size hydrocyclones, operating within the field of a quadripole magnet, were tested using varying feed pulp densities of magnetite, magnetite/dolomite, blast furnace (BF), and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slurries. In the first three cases, the percentage of magnetics recovered increased to greater than 95%. The limiting operational factors are; high pulp density for small cyclones, which can cause flow blockage within the magnet field, and extremely fine particle sizes (<2 microns), which cannot be recovered. The results indicate this technique can remove virtually all the magnetic particles from some steel effluents to a 40-50% weight percent solids pulp, on an in line continuous basis.

"Ethylene has been produced in aqueous solution from CO2 by the electrochemical reduction driven by a natural energy. This process is useful for storing a large amount of the natural energy. In the closed system, the conversion efficiency of CO2 is almost 100%, and the maximum selectivity for the formation of ethylene is more than 70%. On the other hand, the current efficiency for the competitive reduction of water is less than 10%. The electrolysis is practicable under such special conditions as three-phase interface consisting of gas, solution and metal, concentrated solution of potassium halide, low pH and copper or copper halide-confined metal electrode. These requirements are thoroughly examined, and the grounds to reply upon are revealed. A series of chemical apparatuses including an electrolytic cell in a large scale are designed for the ethylene production, which allow us continuously to supply raw CO2 and to extract the product.IntroductionIn connection with the depletion of the petroleum reserve, much attention has been paid to the utilization of natural energies such as sunlight, wind force and waves. However, these energies are always changeable, and some means of storing them are necessary for the common use. In general, natural energies are transformed to the electric energy at the time of utilization, but the electricity is not very storable. This is one of the reasons why the application of natural energy is not so expanded. On the other hand, the storing of natural energy by plants is very skilful. In the photosynthesis, solar energy is transformed to chemical energy by fixing carbon dioxide."

The exploration, geologist of necessity has to have a wide working knowledge of many specialties other than hiw own, First he has to use his own technical background to find a deposit,, of a mineral that is of interest, Once found, his problems are Just beginning, He then has to assume the role of an economist, an accountant, a mining engineer, a chemist, a metallurgist,, a salesman and what-have you, In the economic field, he must determine the marketability of either the ore or the refined mineral. He must gauge the supply and demand for the particular mineral he is interested in and make his best guess as to ultimate cash flow from a deposit over the estimated life of said deposit, He must then assume the role of a mining man and estimate cost of recovery, including an, evaluation of the most economic mining method, cost of supplies and labor, and again estimate a net cash flow. He must then determine amenability of ore to economic metallurgical methods, he must determine the legal status of the property involved and, after analysis of the specific situation, determine the best approach to a deal, After all of this he must sell it to the people who will put up the money and then put his deal together and sell it to the people who own the minerals, if that be necessary. Then he has to sit back, with crossed fingers and crossed legs wondering for some months, and in many cases even years, whether or not he is right. The expenditures required to open up a mine in this day of wild inflation are such that he has to be right, and the responsibilities are awesome.

Manganese compounds occur in many mineral forms widely distributed throughout the crust of the earth. The most important of these commercially are the oxides which are usually found as irregular masses, but in some places (notably U.S.S.R.) occur as extensive beds of varying thickness and purity. The principal sources of ore have been U.S.S.R., Ghana (the Gold Coast of Africa), India, Union of South Africa, Belgian Congo, French Morocco, Cuba, Brazil, and Mexico. New developments of ore are being conducted in Brazil, British Guiana, French Equatorial Africa, and Northern Rhodesia. The production of the United States normally meets less than 10 pct of domestic manganese consumption. Manganese ore (35 pct or more Mn) is used principally by the ferrous metallurgy industry for production of manganese metal, ferromanganese, and other manganese alloys for use in production of steel ingots and castings. Some manganese is used in the nonferrous industry as an alloying element and cleanser in aluminum alloys, aluminum bronze, constantan, manganese bronze, Monel, Everdur, nickel-chromium resistance alloys, and nickel-silver. The metallurgical uses consume about 97 pct of the total manganese ore requirements of the United States. The balance goes principally for the manufacture of dry cells and for chemicals, with limited amounts for ceramic products, plastics, welding rods and varnish. The Materials Survey on Manganese, compiled in 1952 for Materials Office National Security Resources Board by the Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey, provides an excellent review of resources, reserves, specifications, uses, mining, beneficiation, metallurgical processes and deposits, and is worth referring to for greater details. The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of P.T. Freeport Indonesia, Co. is located in the Jayawijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, Indonesia approximately six km west northwest of Puncak Jaya, the highest point on the island of New Guinea. Disseminated mineralization is confined to the Grasberg intrusive complex, a multiphase intrusion of dioritic to monzonitic composition which intruded tightly folded carbonate rocks of the Tertiary Faumai and Ainod formations. The high tonnage and grade of the deposit (1 X 109 tonnes at 1.4 % copper and 1. 8 ppm gold) appear to result from a succession of coincident intrusive and mineralizing events about three million years ago. This paper will focus on the history and character of these events.

Y.:-The engineers of the country are waking up to the possibilities of waste-heat boilers. As the cost of fuel increases, and as more attention is given to economies, it is evident that a great deal may lie gained by utilizing heat that has ordinarily been wasted. The art in the manufacture of&apos; waste-heat boilers has. advanced so that it will now pay to install them under certain conditions where it would not have paid to install boilers constructed in accordance with older methods. In using boilers where the gases are at a comparatively low temperature, a great deal depends on the method of baffling the boiler in securing good results. The Babcock & Wilcox Co. has made a careful investigation of the laws of heat transfer and has applied the same to waste-heat boilers, which have been carefully tested under operating conditions, with the result that we now know what to expect with different arrangements of baffles and heating surfaces. The old idea of installing waste-heat boilers was to provide an arrangement where the draft loss would be a minimum, and little or no attention was paid to the effect of different systems of baffling on the steaming capacity of the boiler. In some instances, to secure a minimum draft loss no baffles were placed in the boilers. After making a most careful study of the subject it developed that this practice was bad, and that to obtain the best commercial economy, in place of endeavoring to obtain a minimum draft loss, an arrangement should be used that would lead to the maximum amount of heat transmission with a comparatively high draft loss. In nearly every case the amount of resistance of the gases fussing through the boiler involves the use of an induced-draft ,fan, but the additional capacity developed by the boiler over that which could be secured with the older designs, through arranging the heating surface properly and using proper baffles, much more than pays for the increase in the steam required to drive the fan.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the absorption of radium and thorium from waste uranium leach liquor by clays and other materials. This work was conducted in support of the Bureau&apos;s goal of minimizing the environmental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards associated with mining and milling operations. Tailing and soil samples from New Mexico were evaluated for their potential to absorb radium and thorium from tailing liquors. Absorption ranged from 0 to 97 pct for radium and 0 to 60 pct for thorium. Some samples that readily absorbed radium were contacted with various salt solutions that could be present in tailing solutions to determine whether desorption would be a potential problem. The desorption of radium ranged from 0 to 75 pct. An alpha spectrometric method was used to determine the radium and thorium concentrations in the solutions and solids.

"In the mining industry, high-level commitments to adopt sustainability have been made at the corporate levels of mining companies, but there continue to be problems when attempts are made to adopt these high-level sustainability aspirations and translate them into appropriate targets and methods at the more-specific operational level. The integration of sustainability principles into day-to-day minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies. A proposed methodology to achieve integration of sustainability at the operational level will direct the systematic and rigorous identification and characterisation of sustainability issues in an operation. The methodology allows different approach strategies for assessment, comprehensive accounting of sustainability indicators and has the ability to identify sustainability issues which may have significant business implications that cannot be identified using traditional analysis processes."

O projeto e a operação de estruturas que podem vir a conter trincas demandam estudos de integridade estrutural suportados por propriedades mecânicas à fadiga e à fratura advindas de ensaios experimentais (p. ex.: curvas J-R ou da/dN vs. ?K), sendo tais experimentos altamente dependentes da medição instantânea do tamanho da trinca. Essa medição em muitos casos é realizada com base na variação da flexibilidade com o crescimento do defeito. O objetivo do presente trabalho é validar experimentalmente soluções numéricas recentes de flexibilidade elástica que descrevem o tamanho instantâneo de uma trinca em corpos de prova de geometria C(T) e SE(B) incorporando efeitos tridimensionais. Ainda, objetiva comparar tais soluções com as disponíveis nas normas ASTM vigentes. Corpos de prova C(T) e SE(B) foram usinados conforme as referidas normas e testados em máquina universal de ensaios MTS 810.25. Na sequência, os dados obtidos foram convertidos em valores de flexibilidade normalizada (µ), determinando-se o tamanho de trinca (a) esperado com base nos referidos equacionamentos. As previsões de tamanho de trinca geradas foram comparadas com medições reais da profundidade de trinca obtidas de fractografias das amostras após separação final. No geral, tanto as soluções da ASTM como de Moreira (2014) foram consideradas acuradas e com erros máximos abaixo de ~ ±1,5%. No entanto, os resultados mostram equivalente aderência experimental das soluções disponíveis nas normas ASTM com as de Moreira (2014) para amostras C(T), mas melhor desempenho das propostas de Moreira para amostras SE(B) de variadas geometrias e profundidades de defeitos.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo aplicar o conceito teórico e experimental fornecido pela mecânica da fratura dependente do tempo, para avaliar por meio do parâmetro de fratura C* suscetibilidade do aço ASTM A297 Gr HP-Nb, para resistir à propagação de trincas por fluência. Este aço é utilizado na fabricação de colunas de suporte de tubos radiantes de Unidades de Coqueamento Retardado, que operam por longos períodos de tempo em temperaturas elevadas. Os ensaios de fluência convencional e de propagação de trinca por fluência foram realizados na temperatura de 927°C, de acordo com as recomendações das normas ASTM E139-11 e ASTM E1457-13. Dos resultados das curvas de fluência obtida para diferentes valores de tensões aplicadas foram determinadas as constantes, A e n, da relação de Norton. Com os resultados obtidos da taxa de propagação de trinca por fluência, da/dt, em função do parâmetro C*, foi possível ser modelada a equação da/dt = 1,1x10-3(C*)0,78. A morfologia da fratura observada na região de crescimento de trinca por fluência no estado estacionário apresentou modo de propagação interdentrítica, típica de aços com estrutura austenítica bruta de fusão.

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

O presente trabalho realiza um estudo das propriedades mecânicas de metais de solda de alta resistência obtidos pelo processo de soldagem GMAW com diferentes condições de soldagem. Foram soldadas juntas multipasses pelo processo GMAW, com preaquecimento de 150°C e 250°C, corrente contínua, posição plana e aporte térmico médio de 1,4kJ/mm. Após a soldagem, realizaram-se ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos em corpos-de-prova retirados integralmente do metal de solda depositado, tanto na condição de como soldado quanto após tratamento térmico a 600°C por 1 hora. Os resultados mostraram que a tenacidade ao impacto experimentou uma redução substancial após o tratamento térmico.

Reduced-scale models have long been used in hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer for studying fundamental flow relations or the performance of prototype designs under prescribed conditions. The pilot plant is a common tool of chemical engineering for investigating process variables and as an integral step in developing a new process. The metallurgical industry was rather slow to recognize the applicability of these techniques to some of its established and rather complex processes, but there has been a rapidly increasing number of applications of the principles of modeling in process metallurgy since World War II. Not only have pilot-scale operations been employed for developing methods of extracting metals that have recently achieved commercial importance, as well as new processes for some of the commoner metals, but models have also been used for engineering studies aimed at better understanding of the controlling, variables of time-honored conventional processes, It appears that the principles of similitude have become accepted as a useful tool, when properly applied, in metallurgy as in other fields of engineering. Much of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Laboratory, Region V, involves study of high-temperature smelting and refining processes for ferrous and related metals in pilot-scale equipment, such as the experimental blast furnace, converter, open-hearth, arc furnace, and rotary kiln. It was appropriate for the work of this laboratory that guiding principles for designing apparatus and interpreting results should be set down and that a bibliography of related work should be available for reference. A summary of the principles of model study and a brief review of some of the more noteworthy general papers have been published elsewhere.3/ Also, the Bureau of mines plans to publish a report of investigations describing its experimental work in this field. The bibliography is presented here as a service to others who may have use for it.

For the first time in an underground stone mine, the relationship between roof movement and microseismic emissions was examined in conjunction with two distinct roof fall areas. As roof monitoring increases in acceptance and monitoring technology advances, the goal of providing reliable roof fall detection systems to enhance the safety of underground mine workers moves closer to reality. Instrumental to reaching that goal is the ability to interpret accurately and completely roof movement and microseismic emissions, which can serve as precursors to roof falls. This paper examines the capabilities of convergence and microseismic monitoring systems to better understand roof rock failure mechanics and to anticipate roof falls. An understanding of how these techniques are used and how they interact with each other is critical in developing the most effective ground control strategy for our nation’s mines.

This paper deals with the various options considered and factors that influenced the final selection of the headframe, shaft layout and hoisting systems required at the Impala No 16 Shaft in order to hoist both the required 3 Mt of ore per annum, and transport men, material and equipment between the surface and the underground workings to a depth of 1640 m. The layout and construction method used for what is at present the world?s tallest concrete headframe is discussed together with the integrated hoist room foundations designed to suit multiple mechanical and electrical hoist supplier?s solutions. The mechanical components of the two tower mounted 6,5m 4 rope Koepe hoists and deflection sheaves and their layout is dealt with in detail. Various features of the bearing type, brake units and brake control system are also discussed. Installation of the mechanical and electrical hoist equipment in the headframe took place during the sinking phase of the project and placed severe restrictions on the use of the heavy lifting facilities. This required a well-managed and systematic approach to delivery of the hoist components and associated equipment, as well as close co-operation between all contractors on site.

THE senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallographic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point A, at about 900° C., iron passes from the gamma condition to a. new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transforma¬tion, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. Were it possible to retain at room temperature pure iron but partially transformed, it seems probable that a Widmanstättian structure, or rather, as later explained, a martensitic structure would be observed (Fig. 1), consisting of alpha iron at the boundaries and at the octahedral planes, and of a groundmass of gamma iron. In order to confirm, if possible, the accuracy of that view, a number of experiments were conducted. Polished samples of electrolytic iron were heated in a vacuum, maintained in the gamma range for several hours and quenched in different media. It was hoped by such means to produce and retain on the polished surfaces a pattern which would reveal the mechanism of the allotropic transformation. The samples were placed in evacuated quartz tubes, heated to 1000° C. and held 2 hr. at that temperature. The tubes were then immersed in the quenching bath. Iced brine and liquid air were used first. The polyhedral austenitic structure existing at the time of immersion was very clearly revealed (Fig. 2). This is generally ascribed to iron volatilizing at the grain boundaries.
