The rate of dissolution of alumina in carbon-saturated liquid iron has been studied experimentally in a system where alumina was in the form of a cylindrical rod immersed in an iron bath contained in a graphite crucible. Data obtained consisted of the concentrations of aluminum in the melt as a function of time. In the case of static experiments, the data are shown to agree with theoretical prdictions based on the diffusion of aluminum.. The rate of dissolution was greatly increased by the rotation of the alumina rod. It is concluded that the diffusion of aluminum from the alumina/metal interface is the rate-controlling step. In the past, thermodynamic investigations of systems encountered in ferrous process metallurgy have received widespread attention. More recently, considerable work has been devoted to the study of kinetics associated with these systems in an effort to determine their rate controlling mechanisms. The alumina-iron system is of great importance in ferrous metallurgy. Yet information concerning kinetics of reaction in this system is seriously limited. The present study was made in order to establish the rate-controlling step for dissolution of solid alumina in liquid iron. LITERATURE REVIEW A number of papers concerning dissolution of solid metals in liquid metals have been reported in the literat~re. Generally, for these simple systems, dissolution is controlled by mass transfer of the dissolving species. Complex systems involving dissolution of solid metal carbides and oxides in liquid metals and slags have been studied to a much lesser extent. Skolnick5,6 reported on the reaction between liquid cobalt and poly-crystalline cylinders of tungsten carbide, in which the cylinders were dissolved while being rotated about their longitudinal axes at various speeds and temperatures. As a result of unexpected preferential grain boundary attack by the liquid cobalt, large errors in the measured dissolution rates occurred because of loss of tungsten carbide grains to the liquid cobalt. Nevertheless, it was possible to establish that the liquid Co-W carbide reaction was not controlled by mass transfer. In a similar approach, cooper7 was able to show that artificial sapphire rods, (alumina single crystals) dissolving in lime-alumina-silica slags obeyed a mechanism of mass transfer control. Here, again, the rods were rotated at various speeds and temperatures, and the process was followed as a function of these variables. Forster and Knacke8 took a practical approach to reaction between slags and refractories. By blowing argon through refractory cylinders of silica, silli-manite, or dolomite and directing the gas to rise along the slag-refractory interface, it was possible to increase the rate of mass transfer. Although the method was admittedly crude, it nevertheless permitted an evaluation of the relative stabilities of refractories with respect to slag attack. Data were interpreted on the basis of mass transfer control. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Apparatus. An illustration of the apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace consisted of a Morganite recrystallized alumina tube wound with a molybdenum coil. A secondary molybdenum heater was mounted around the upper half of the primary coil to aid in controlling the thermal gradient within the furnace. The primary heater tube was 3 in. in ID and 30 in. long. A reducing mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H was maintained around the heating elements. Thermal insulation was provided by alumina powder. The chamber within the primary combustion tube contained a boron nitride block near the top to assist in controlling the thermal gradient to the furnace and also to provide a bearing surface for the rotating graphite shaft. The outside diameter of the graphite shaft was $ in. A separate threaded graphite specimen holder was screwed into the end of the shaft. The holder contained a tapered hole drilled into the end to guide the oxide specimens as they were pressed into it for mounting. Additional guidance for the rotating graphite shaft was furnished by a water-cooled bronze bushing attached to the top of the furnace. A steel clamp was fastened to the upper end of the graphite shaft and rested on a thrust bearing; the shaft and clamp were driven by a dc motor through a set of gears. Two O-rings located immediately above the bronze bushing maintained a gas-tight seal about the graphite shaft. The lower half of the alumina tube housed the crucible and charge, which were placed on a 3/4-in. diam movable alumina support tube. With this arrangement, charges could be inserted into or removed from the furnace while the hot zone was maintained at or above 1000°C. To control the temperature of the furnace, the thermocouple was mounted inside the support tube and in contact with the crucible bottom. Stray electric fields in the furnace were of sufficient intensity to cause erratic indications by the thermocouple. By enclosing the thermocouple protection tube in a molybdenum sheath and grounding this shield, the problem was eliminated. Output of the thermocouple went to an automatic continuous balance controller. Procedure. A typical run was as follows. Over five decades ago Kitchener et al. in England and La Mer and Healy in the US were advancing our understanding and application of flocculants, primarily related to water treatment and filtration of sludge. This paper identifies the beneficial uses of flocculants in the mining industry and revisits some less common applications. Flocculants are used in unique ways in the mining industry: (a) to increase the effectiveness of sediment ponds to achieve discharge compliance; (b) to eliminate air emissions and costs associated with concentrate drying; (c) to reduce soil loss by applying a flocculant to erodible soils, and reducing wind and water erosion; (d) to remove/thicken metal precipitates in acid rock drainage treatment; and (e) to enhance clarification and thickening in mineral processing. The mechanism of how flocculants, coagulations and potentially-determining ions function is described and how their use can be controlled and optimized. The potential toxic effects of flocculants and coagulants when used to achieve effluent permit discharge compliance for suspended solids is discussed. A review of numerous best management practice (BMP) guidelines for the design and operation of sediment ponds treating mine site runoff to remove total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity revealed an absence of a predictive methodology to address regulatory discharge compliance for TSS concentration, turbidity and flocculant-induced toxicity. An essential component of pond design is the need to determine whether flocculants and/or other settling aids are required based on the site-specific soil particle size distributions upslope of the pond. Procedures are provided to predict the need for settling aids and estimate pond discharge quality and downstream impact for TSS, turbidity, toxicity and sub-lethal toxicity. The need to develop BMP guidelines are discussed for (a) the application of flocculant to surface soils to reduce erosion, (b) the application of flocblocks to increase the ?sediment control? aspects of erosion and sediment control, as part of the mine site erosion control plan strategy and (c) the application of flocculant to silt socks to treat mine site runoff.

The hardening of the non-ferrous alloys is accomplished by a process of heating, quenching and ageing. R. S. Dean, head of the research department of the Western Electric Co., told of the results of this research in 'a lecture on "Recent Advances in the Art and Science of Fabricating Metals," given before the Missouri Mining and Metallurgical Association on Jan. 24, 1929.

This paper outlines the design, justification and performance of a gravity circuit upgrade at the Marvel Loch treatment plant. The design of the upgrade was simple but effective. The key components of the upgrade were the addition of a sluice and a second Knelson Concentrator. The sluice was installed as a pre-concentration step. The upgrade also included the purchase of a Mineral Cone to treat the increased quantity of gravity concentrate. The cost was low because of the use of mostly second-hand equipment. The result was that for a cost of $75 000 the gravity recovery doubled and the overall recovery increased by over one per cent. This paper shows that you do not need to spend millions of dollars to be innovative and successful.

Errors associated with estimating the grade of an attribute of interest in a deposit can compromise planning, sequencing, and mineral beneficiation decisions. Several factors are associated with estimation errors. Among them, we can highlight the factors associated with sample spacing, the size of production volumes, and the variability of the attribute considered in the estimation. The access to estimation error can be obtained by some geostatistical methods, for example, by stochastic simulation. However, this is a process that in some situations is computer intensive and takes time. Previous works have proposed a simplified method to access the Maximum Estimation Error (MEE) associated with different types of grade variables, depending on the sample spacing, at small production volumes and considering specific coefficients of variation ranges. This paper presents an approach to assess the MEE associated with long-term volumes. Considering the methodology proposed, it is possible to approximate if a specific drilling pattern used in a deposit provides an acceptable pre-determined estimation error for Resource Classification. Results and considerations on the impact of the geometry of larger production volumes on the MEE calculation are also presented.

The situation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, or Cominco, may be somewhat unique in that the Company is not only a manufacturer of ammonium nitrate, but as a mining company is a major user of its own product. This situation has resulted in highly successful application of ammonium nitrate-oil explosives. Several noteworthy techniques have been developed and others have been improved. Use of this material in the mining industry has led ammonium nitrate producers to adopt the term nitro-carbo-nitrate or INN for ammonium nitrate-oil blends. A small blending plant at Cominco's largest mining property, the Sullivan Mine, at Kimberley, B.C., is producing more than 80% of all the explosive used at the Sullivan, and is supplying two other Cominco mines. Application has required intensive research to determine the best forms of ammonium nitrate for use in small holes drilled for development and long-hole stoping. It has led not only to experiments to determine the best blending oil, but also to development of loading techniques to the point where NCN is being moved through loading tubes over 700 feet. It has required research into mining practices such as hole arrangement and blasting of development cuts. It has resulted in the development of a special product for secondary breaking. All this has been accompanied by the recognition of the importance of insuring safe practices at every stage.

Seismic methods provide an efficient and comprehensive approach to overburden studies pertinent to mining exploration and development, and to other mining and civil engineering problems such as rock mechanics, slope stability, and foundation engineering. For the purpose of defining geologic units and structural features, these methods are generally regarded as the most accurate, but most expensive, of the commonly-used geophysical exploration methods. Although the accuracy and cost of seismic work are generally affected adversely by rugged topography and complicated geologic conditions, it is in rough terrain and complex geology that seismic methods offer important advantages in overburden investigations. For example, to find the surface of rock underlying unconsolidated overburden at depths of approximately 200 feet, a 50-foot spacing of drill holes along the profile line would be required to yield a degree of resolution and accuracy similar to that obtained from a 50-foot spacing between seismic detectors along the same line. See Figure 1. In cases similar to that shown in Figure 1, a twelve-channel recording seismic system would be used. The main components of such a system would be: 1. detectors (commonly referred to as geophones) which convert the ground movement resulting from seismic waves into an electrical signal. 2. a multi-conductor cable which connects the seismic detectors to the amplifiers. 3. ampliiiers, amplify and filter the electrical signals . 4. oscillograph, records the amplified signal. 5. the blaster and firing line. A typical layout of the seismic spread and the components of the system Is shown in Figure 2.

Section 709 of Public Law 95-87, "Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977," requests the National Academy of Sciences to determine if the standards of the act are applicable to minerals other than coal. The Academy has established the Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation to respond to this charge. The committee is, itself, organized to be responsive to the varieties of minerals, environments, mining systems, and locations that are representative of U.S. mining systems. It is not the charge of the committee to write trial legislation, but to indicate whether or not technology, extant or proposed, is available to meet the standards of the law, and at what cost. It is within this set of conditions that the committee will examine blasting.

The stresses in the materials surrounding an underground opening are dependent upon the virgin stress field, the geometry of the opening and changes in boundary conditions as mining progresses. For most underground openings especially in coal mines, roof bolts are installed to help stabilize the opening. While most parameters in roof bolt design and installation have been thoroughly investigated, the effects of the initial stress field on the effectiveness of roof bolts have not been recognized. This paper summarizes the results of investigation of the effect of the initial stress field on the performance of mine roof bolts. Roof bolt installations are duplicated in the laboratory utilizing conventional roof bolt frame, commercial roof bolts and shells, mine torque wrench and encapsulated rock specimens for anchorage. A special and primary feature of the laboratory set-up is the addition of a loading system for generating stresses at the anchorage specimens. For this preliminary study, different levels of hydrostatic stress fields were induced at the anchorage specimen, instrumented roof bolts were installed in the usual manner, and the bolt load loss-with-time observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the stress field at the anchorage horizon has a considerable influence on the performance of mine roof bolts, i.e. the higher the stress field, the higher the anchorage efficiency. From this observation, methods of improving the performance of mine roof bolts utilizing new shell designs and methods of installing them are suggested.

The removal of iron impurity from zinc calcine was studied by magnetization roasting and magnetic separation. The effects of roasting temperature, magnetic intensity, ore grinding, and leaching pretreatment on iron grade and recovery were investigated. The results indicated that iron recovery increased with the increase of roasting temperature or magnetic intensity, while iron grade was always less than 22%, depending on the fact that the magnetite were not liberated completely. The good liberation was difficult to be achieved by ore grinding but was easier by acid leaching, since the magnetite grains were very fine. After the leaching pretreatment, the recovery of 76.31% with iron grade of 53.24% was obtained by one roughing and cleaning. The SEM/EDS analysis showed that a part of sphalerite, zinc ferrite and other gangues were mixed into the iron concentrate, while some of fine magnetite was reported to the tailing.

The Bureau of Mines studied two types of approved coal mine dust personal samplers to determine the effect of decreasing the amplitude of airflow velocity fluctuations on cyclone performance. Results indicate that more dust is collected when pulsation free flow is used. Velocity fluctuations were reduced by means of a pulsation damper; damper efficiency of about 85 percent was needed to reduce the fluctuations to an acceptable level. The data were obtained employing both pulsating and non-pulsating flow. A comparison was made of (1) the masses of respirable coal dust as determined by weighing and of (2) the particle size distributions as determined by an electronic counter. An empirical relationship is given between the ratio of masses collected using pulsating and nonpulsating flow (M') and the ratio of the maximum air velocity to the minimum air velocity (V') as measured in the cyclone entrance channel.

The investment involved in any communication system represents a considerable sum. Even though it is desirable that the system work properly each and every time it is called into use, some failures are bound to occur. Most failures, however, and especially those that occur most frequently, are due to poor installation techniques. An extra hour spent at an installation site can save many maintenance trips and many frustrating hours of system troubleshooting. Typical faults likely to cause communication outrage are Pager phone systems Poor splices aggravated by corrosion. Strain relief not provided. Drip loop not provided. Incorrect branch connections. Overloading the circuit. Poor battery connections. Improper wire size or type. Lightning strikes. Improper placement of wire runs. Carrier phones Mounting transceiver near load resistors or other sources of heat. Tracks not electrically bonded. Cable abrasion due to poor mounting location. Disconnected battery. Poor mechanical installation. Each installation should be well planned. After an installation is completed, the technician should ask the question, "What can go wrong with this unit or line?" Remember the adage, "Whatever can go wrong, will." Preventive measures taken during installation will pay off in the long run. 6.2 Pager Phone Installation The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery-operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is usually two-wire, nonpolarized, and operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. 6.2.1 Mounting Pager phones are designed to be mounted on an upright support at the desired location. For convenience, the phone should be mounted 5 feet above the floor where there is no obstruction to using the handset or removing the cabinet front cover for servicing or battery replacement. In low-coal situations, a suitable height for installation should be selected convenient to the normal operator's position at the site selected. About 12 inches of free space on each side of the phone should be provided for cabinet access. The phone should be protected against direct exposure to dripping water and should not be allowed to rest in a puddle of water. The mounting location should be convenient to a work location and have a safe, unobstructed area for a worker to stand and use the phone. The phone must be in a location where the worker will not be in the path of moving vehicles or falling debris. Each telephone is normally well insulated, but it is still good practice to provide an insulating mat or dry planking for the user to stand on.

Effects of the August 1995 failure of the Omai tailings dam in Guyana continue to be felt throughout the mining industry. This article is taken from the final report of the independent body of experts commissioned by the government of Guyana to establish the cause of the failure. It explains what happened, why and how to avoid it in the future. Despite environmental, health and safety effects that were negligible by any objective measure, the failure has received wide international attention. Coming on the heels of the shift in exploration targets and development opportunities to developing countries, it has intensified interest in tailings dam safety and environmental management issues. An informed understanding of the nature of the failure and its effects is key to responding to these concerns.

Hot cracking of magnesium (Mg) alloys during welding creates a barrier to enhancing the use of these alloys in automotive applications. As a result, it is imperative to understand the mechanisms responsible for hot cracking of Mg alloy welds in order to develop means of eliminating this problem. In this study, the hot cracking susceptibility of AZ91E and AE42 magnesium alloys were assessed using the moving torch Varestraint test method. Plates of 3 mm thickness were extracted from AZ91E and AE42 ingots and subsequently tested. Quantitative cracking data in terms of maximum crack length (MCL) was used for evaluating the cracking susceptibility. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out. The results suggest that AE42 showed a higher resistance to hot cracking in comparison to the AZ91E alloy. This was attributed to the difference in microstructure between the two alloys. In the fusion zone and HAZ of AE42, the brittle needle-like A1IIRE3 phase was seen to decompose to the more ductile particle-like Al2RE phase, thereby increasing the alloy's resistance to hot cracking. In contrast, SEM fractography revealed that brittle A16Mn and Mg17A112 intermetallic particles segregated to grain boundaries and triggered hot cracking in AZ91E.

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

CO2 geological storage is one of the current technologies developed worldwide to reduce industrial emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Two main mineral types of deep geological reservoir could be contemplated for CO2 storage: sandstone reservoirs and carbonaceous reservoirs. Geochemical reactivity of a dolomite-calcite mineral compound and magnesite pure mineral was studied with a set of nine experiments per crushed mineral phase with two saline solution and with mQ water and three temperatures: 50°C, 90°C and 150°C. Experiments were performed in batch reactors with 250 bar of CO2 partial pressure during 24h to assess the effect of temperature and salinity in constant CO2 pressure. Solid characterization was performed by XRD and solution analysis by ICP-OES. Acidification of solutions due to CO2 dissolution in water is the main source of reactivity in the system. Proton concentration increases and causes partial dissolution of initial dolomite, calcite and magnesite and release of Ca2+ and Mg2+ cations in solution. Bicarbonate anion (HCO3) concentration also increases due to CO2 dissolution in water and carbonate minerals dissolution. Temperatures of 90°C and 150ºC increase the kinetic of reaction and the dissolution of minerals and cations release in solution. New carbonate crystalline phase precipitates as a Ca, Mg solid solution between dolomite and calcite pure poles.

The current U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is addressing the recovery of flake graphite from kish, a steelmaking waste product, and the use of zeolites from abundant domestic natural deposits for efficiently cleaning up mining industry wastewater. The United States is almost totally dependent on imports for its graphite needs, but this may change depending upon the results from a pilot plant being constructed by industry using Bureau technology. Standard mineral processing techniques were applied by the Bureau to recover high-quality flake graphite from kish. It was considered innovative enough to receive an R&D 100 Award in 1992, and its commercialization has the potential to supply the total U.S. demands for graphite many times over. Zeolites have ion exchange properties similar to ion exchange resins, but are less expensive and available in large quantities. Samples of naturally occurring zeolites were tested for their efficiency in removing metal ions from synthetic and industrial waste solutions. The tests focused on defining their selecting, loading, eluting, and regenerating characteristics, and on developing a method for recovering the metal ions as added value products. The results showed that the removal of metal ions with zeolites from acid rock drainage (ARD) solutions is technically feasible and that this technique has the potential for being used in an integrated chemical treatment systems approach either as a primary or secondary cleaning step.

"The Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) consists of an inverted fluidized bubbly bed, located above a system of parallel inclined channels. This novel arrangement enhances the hydrodynamics of flotation in a number of ways. Firstly, the free-surface of the flotation cell is enclosed via a fluidized bed distributor, ensuring uniform application of wash water to promote desliming. Secondly, foams can be variable in their stability and lack permeability. Hence this system is preferably operated in the absence of foam, instead opting for a bubbly zone of high bubble volume fraction through the use of a very high gas flux and/or wash water flux. Discharge of the product proceeds upwards through a central port of narrow cross-sectional area. Thirdly, the system of inclined channels increases the segregation between the bubbles and the water, ensuring the bubbly zone remains contained within the upper vertical zone, and the liquid flux reporting to the overflow is low. The expanded operating regime of the RFC was investigated by covering a very broad range of gas fluxes, up to 5.5 cm/s, and wash water fluxes, over 2 cm/s. Both laboratory and pilot plant performances were quantified by the recovery of hydrophobic particles and rejection of the hydrophilic particles, using model and industrial coal feeds. The new system hydrodynamics was found to offer significant advantages in flotation kinetics, desliming, and particle recovery across a broad particle size range. Bubble interfacial flux reached as high as 600 m2/m-2s-1. The upper system consists entirely of a high volume fraction of bubbles, which provides a "safety-net" to protect against the detachment of coarse particles, and a highly permeable zone for counter-current washing of the flotation product. Under relatively extreme conditions selective stripping of the product is observed, resulting in grade recovery values beyond those achievable using the tree flotation method."
