Growing concern over increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide has prompted new interests in development of materials and techniques for its sequestration. Various research and developmental work on different aspects of carbon capture technology are being extensively carried out worldwide. The main objective of the present work is to synthesize a HAS material having high capacity and robust ability for recycling to capture greenhouse gases with special reference to carbon dioxide (CO2) from the sources from where it is released to the atmosphere. Existing CO2 capture techniques involves the use of solid materials that lack sufficient stability for repeated use or liquid adsorbents that are expensive and require significant amounts of energy. The development of a new means of measuring the relative abrasivity of a slurry came about by necessity in 1967 during a full scale loop test of a 560 H.P. reciprocating pump handling magnetite slurry. In order to evaluate the life of expendable fluid end parts, the question of the amount of attrition in a re-circulated slurry had to be considered. An expected reduction in abrasivity as a result of this attrition would certainly give erroneous data on a parts life test. There- fore, some means of measuring such change in abrasivity became imperative. Several test methods were investigated1 but it was felt that these did not fully represent the wear due to back and forth rubbing action associated with a reciprocating pump. A "rubbing block" device used some years ago to determine the quality of hard facing materials was recalled, along with its shortcomings, in that an attempt was made to suspend a small percentage of abrasive particles in a colloidal viscous "mud". Erratic results were attributed to the fact that it was difficult to maintain a consistent slurry concentration under the metal wear block and the reciprocating speed was not great enough to maintain good agitation.

Quantitative determination of gold at sub-ppm concentrations in sulphide minerals is an important component of deportment studies for sulphide-gold deposits. Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis is preferred for this application because it rapidly and cost-effectively provides spatially resolved (<20 pm), low ppb concentration data for gold and other elements in mineral grains. Recent advances in LA-ICP-MS analysis include the development and application of elemental mapping. Raw signals from multiple line scans or lines-of-spots are deconvoluted and calibrated to generate elemental maps which provide detailed information on spatial variations of gold and other elements within and between grains.

International Training Resources is a company consisting of personnel with extensive law enforcement and military special operations experience, The staff members are qualified to train and certify, assist and advise law enforcement officers and agencies, at any level, in critical incident policy, procedures and tactical resolutions. Successful critical incident resolution is comprised of many elements of professional skills and personnel. (Command staff, negotiators, snipers, tactical teams, uniform patrol, K-9, bomb squad, etc.) Recently, tactical teams have been developing the capability for the use of explosive methods for rapid entry into crisis locations. This document ‘will briefly describe the environment, operational issues and courses of action associated with developing a complete tactical breaching program for utilization by SWAT teams in response to operational conditions in critical incident situations. This topic is being presented to the I.S.E.E. evaluators under “Interesting Blasting Projects” and “Public Relations” categories. Tactical operations differ significantly from traditional industry practices and we appreciate the opportunity to show the industry other professional applications of explosive materials and techniques. Presently, of the few schools from which law enforcement officers can receive training with explosive breaching methods, International Training Resources is the only company currently teaching and certifying officers which has received total endorsement by the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) and the state blaster’s licensing commission. We have pioneered the combining of law enforcement needs and blasting industry technology to train tactical officers, nationwide, in the mission essential skills necessary for explosive breaching.

Cananea is located at an elevation of 5,200 ft in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and about 30 miles south of the United States border. A graded road runs to Cananea from the border town of Naco, near Bisbee, and a branch road turns east to Cananea at Imuris, a town 36 miles south of the border on the Nogales-Hermosillo highway. Railway service is provided by a spur from the Nogales-Naco branch of the Ferrocarril del Pacífico Railroad. Fuel for the power plant, smelter, and town (population approximately 20,000) is natural gas, supplied through a pipeline from the United States. The Compa[n]ía Minera de Cananea generates electric power for its own installations and also supplies both electricity and water to the town. HISTORY The earliest record of mining in Cananea dates back to 1760, when Jesuit fathers worked the Cobre Grande mine for silver in spite of resistance from hostile Indians. About 1800, several mines were worked on a relatively large scale by the House of Guea of Chihuahua. From then until about 1890 when William C. Greene of Fairbanks, Ariz., acquired control of a large group of properties, mining continued in a rather sporadic manner. The mineralized district is approximately 6 miles wide and 15 miles long, and the orebodies are associated with breccia pipes and granitic intrusive rock. In the early days, many small mines operated within the area on high-grade orebodies. IT has been ascertained in recent years that certain rocktypes, geological formations and structural conditions may be used as fairly reliable guides, when prospecting in recognized mineral belts or mining districts, with a reasonable certainty of discovering "pay-ore;" and that such is considered as a practically established conclusion may be inferred from a perusal of the recent reports of the U. S. Geological Survey and the literature of the several scientific societies discussing minim, geology, and kindred subjects. Cripple Creek is no exception to this conclusion, and the rock-type or association, rather than the structural condition, is the most infallible guide.† These guides consist of four, possibly five, dike-rocks, three of which are extremely basic, while the fourth is an acid rock of an entirely dissimilar character. The basic rocks are nepheline-basalt, limburgite, feldspar-basalt and tephrite. There are grounds, however, for believing that the two latter are subdivisions of one type, and therefore will be described under one head. The acid rock is quartz-porphyry. A thermodynamic description of the equilibrium in liquid and gas phases under specific conditions of refractory gold pressure oxidation was generated using the HKF theory. The gold behavior was considered at 190-225°C in the presence of 1-100 mg/L of chloride ion, and under oxidationreduction potential (ORP) of +700 to +1030 mV. The calculations show that the predominant form of gold(I) occurrence is [AuOH]° compared to [AuCl2]?. High ORP favors the formation of [AuCl4]? as a predominant form of gold(III). It is noted that this complex is responsible for the gold losses buildup during POX. Laboratory test results for double refractory concentrate POX are shown. The combined negative effect of (i) organic carbon of the concentrate and (ii) dissolved chlorides in POX slurry on gold recovery is demonstrated. The effects of carbonate blending to the POX feed concentrate and incomplete oxidation of sulfides on POX performance were studied. The pilot tests results of continuous pressure oxidation are also shown and generally confirm the laboratory results and theoretic dependencies. A comparison of the experimental data with the results of thermodynamic calculations is made. As a result of current research, an effective process for POX treatment of carbonaceous sulfide concentrates in the presence of chlorides was developed.

In India around 15-20% of Run of Mine (ROM) from any iron ore deposit reports to slime dams as byproduct of iron ore beneficiation process. The proportion of iron ore slime to ROM will increase in future with higher proportion of lean grade ores in ROM. Furthermore, tonnages of iron ore slime will also increase with increasing demand of iron concentrate. Presently, this slime is stored in the dam in the absence of beneficiation technology. A beneficiation flowsheet has been developed at Tata Steel. This process produced concentrate of 2.2% alumina with 40 % yield from slime of 7-9% alumina. The iron content in the reject will be less than 40% thus adhering to the regulatory norm. Pilot scale study show waste from slime beneficiation is a good raw material for making a variety of building materials. Waste from slime beneficiation also has soil amendment properties. Pilot scale studies show productivity of rice increased when the waste of slime beneficiation process is mixed with soil. On commercialization of this zero waste technology slime generated from the iron ore washing plant will be completely used. In this paper the result of the pilot scale studies on slime beneficiation and utilization processes towards soil making and making of building materials are discussed in detail.

"Cathodic and anodic reactions in an acidic nitrate medium were studied in reference to the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from pyrolusite' (Mn02) ores by reductive leaching. Two USA ores were investigated. The reductant for the pyrolusite ore is produced cathodically in an electrolytic cell and can either be nitrous acid (HN02) or nitric oxide gas (NO). In this work emphasis was placed on the nitrous acid leach. In a high-temperature leach in a nitrous/nitric acid medium, manganese and silver are solubilized and iron is not. Anodic electrowinning of manganese dioxide from the acidic manganese nitrate electrolyte yields flaky y-Mn02, similar to that produced from sulfate and chloride electrolytes. Cathodic regeneration of nitrorts acid was studied in a membrane cell in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.0 to 0.1 M nitrous acid on a' platinized titanium cathode. At cathode potentials ranging from +950 to +700 mV (SHE), cathodic reduction to nitrous acid takes place, at cathode potentials < +700 mV, cathodic reduction of nitrous acid to nitric oxide takes place. A conceptual process is presented and discussed.IntroductionManganiferous-silver oresLarge reserves of manganiferous-silver ores are present in the Southwestern United States and Latin America. These ores are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment, due to the insolubility of the higher oxides of manganese (Mn 4+) in all common lixiviants such as cyanide solutions, dilute sulfuric acid, nitric acid, ammonia, salt solution, thiosulfates, etc. The silver is either bound by the insoluble manganese, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization.Higher oxides of manganese will dissolve if they are first reduced pyrometallurgically to manganous oxide (Mn2+). This is a widely used pretreatment for manganese dioxide ores and subsequent dissolution in sulfuric acid is common. In order to avoid the pyrometallurgical pretreatment with its large energy requirements and gaseous emissions, fully hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed. These processes are based on the presence of a reductant in solution, in order to reduce the insoluble higher oxides of manganese to soluble lower oxides. Aqueous S02 has been proposed and tested on industrial scale by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. After washing, silver could be extracted by cyanidation. The neutralization of the pulp prior to cyanidation however causes problems in filtration and the reagent consumptions are high [1]. More recently, acidified thiourea and bacteria were proposed for the solubilization of both manganese and silver in a single leach step. High extractions were obtained, but drawbacks of these methods are high reagent consumption or slow kinetics [2,3]. For the options of manganese recovery from the leach filtrate, precipitation with persulfate or ammonium carbonate and ion exchange have been proposed. The proposed options for silver reclaim are precipitation with either zinc or Na2S and adsorption onto activated carbon."

The extent to which coal mines have installed various types of haulage systems and mining machines is a subject about which there is little definite information available in convenient form for the country as a whole . A few State mine inspectors include in their annual reports such information for their respective States , but uniform data for the United States have not until recently been compiled . Several years ago the Bureau of Mines compiled from one of the standard mining directories * a statement showing the kinds of machines and haulage used in coal mines . The first statement was prepared from the 1918 edition of the directory in which detailed descriptions of coal mines were given . The information presumably related to the calendar year 1917. Similar statements have been compiled from the directories for 1919 , 1920 , and 1922 , the statement for 1921 having been omitted because the directory for that year did not become available . The latest statement is given below and is based upon the directory for 1922. It relates to conditions prevailing in 1921 , and covers a total of 7,088 coal mines . Of these , 5,064 mines . or more than 71 per cent , were using animal haulage . As compared with the total number of all classes of mines , those in the animal - haul age group constituted 71.4 per cent , the percentage having remained practically stationary during the past four years , although the actual number of mines in the group has increased . Rope haulage was reported by 1,066 mines , or 15 per cent of the total , representing a larger number of mines than in 1918 , but a decrease of 2 in the percentage for the group as compared with all classes of mines . Electric haulage was reported by 3,274 mines (46.2 per cent ) , and the number of motors in use was 11,265 . The percentage of mines in this class has not changed materially, but the actual number of mines has shown a gain of about 900 during the past four years . Compressed-air locomotives have not increased either in actual or relative number , the percentage for the past year being but 1.2 . The number of mines using storage- battery locomotives has increased from 3.6 per cent of the total shown four years ago , to 9.8 per cent for last year, the latest figures showing 693 mines with 1,428

This paper presents the second of a two part study on density stratification in a laboratory batch jig. The first study, reported elsewhere, investigated the effect of operating conditions on the stratification profile achieved at equilibrium. The study reported in this paper investigated their effect on the kinetics of density stratification under 18 different sets of operating conditions - five for binary systems with different particle densities; and 13 for a ternary system with different configurations of the jig cycle. Although the study was academic in nature (it involved simple systems of 8 mm glass beads) it has a number of practical implications. It found that the most influential operating variables affecting stratification kinetics are the amplitude of water displacement, the pulsion hold time, and, to a lesser extent, the pulsion time. It also found that reasonable rates of stratification can be expected in systems with density differences as low as 237 kg/m3 but below this the kinetics deteriorate significantly. The two studies together suggest that, within a broad range of operating conditions, the equilibrium stratification profile is independent of control variables and it is the control of stratification kinetics that has the primary influence on the quality of density separations in a jig. The Fort Knox Mine is located in Alaska’s interior where the average ambient air temperatures range from -24°C in January to 16°C in July. The mill processes a free milling gold ore utilizing both a gravity recovery circuit and conventional cyanide leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits. Plant slurry temperature cycles seasonally and allows for a unique opportunity to measure the impact temperature has on gold leach kinetics, carbon adsorption efficiency and cyanide destruction reactions. Mathematical models have been developed to accurately predict actual mill performance. This paper describes the development of the models and presents data that allow for a better understanding of the impact of circuit operating temperature on process efficiencies.

"It has been discovered that copper concentrates can be leached in strong (40-60%) sulfuric acid with nitric acid, or with oxygen if nitric acid is present as a catalyst. Chalcopyrite is rapidly decomposed at temperatures well below the boiling temperature of the lixiviant (-150 C.) and the resulting copper and ferric salts are precipitated as CuS04.H20 and FeH(S04)z.4H20. Other metal sulfides such as zinc, lead, nickel, etc. are also converted to sulfates that are nearly insoluble. Sulfur is partially converted to elemental and partially to sulfuric acid. Reduction products of nitric acid can be recovered from the distillate with good recovery. Conversion of as-received copper concentrates is largely complete in about 1 hour. Introduction9 molar sulfuric acid is an unusual hydrometallurgical lixiviant: it has a boiling point of about 150 C. and a low solubility for base metal sulfates. Below about 6 molar acid, the boiling point falls below 120 C. and yields much higher sulfate salt solubility, while above 12 or 13 molar acid and at higher temperature sulfuric acid becomes an oxidizing agent, yielding gaseous S02' Thus, sulfuric acid within this range of concentration is capable of acting well above the temperature of boiling water without requiring autoclave conditions, and if typical oxidative leaching conditions are applied to suspended mineral sulfide concentrates, it is possible to obtain a conversion of these sulfides into 'crystalline sulfates. Thereafter, the sulfates can be separated by filtration or by solid - bowl centrifuge and the solution can be recirculated to the reactor vessel. Meanwhile, the solid sulfates can be treated in a typical hydrometallurgical circuit, i.e., dissolved in a return stream that is essentially water, separated from each other by, for example, solvent extraction, and recovered as metals by electrowinning."

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

Magnesite and dolomite are two salt-type minerals. The surface characteristics of these two minerals are almost the same. It is very difficult to remove dolomite from magnesite ores by flotation process. The present study was performed to develop a new collector and a better flotation scheme for magnesite from dolomite. The flotation tests show that there exists a significant difference in flotability between magnesite and dolomite when dodecyl phosphate synthesised with dodecanol, phosphorus oxychloride and other chemicals is used as collector. Sodium silicate was used as the modifier to improve flotation selectivity. It was found that sodium silicate selectively depressed magnesite at pH 4.5 - 7.5. The separation of magnesite from dolomite was achieved in a reverse flotation which resulted in a 76.1 per cent yield of magnesite with a grade of 47.3 per cent at 100 ppm dodecyl phosphate and 75 ppm sodium silicate. The flotation mechanism was investigated by characterising surface electrical properties and measuring the adsorption density of the reagents on magnesite and dolomite.

The underground operation at Barrick?s Cortez Mine, located near Elko, NV, required the construction of a 12 foot diameter smooth-lined ventilation shaft. Barrick preferred to mechanically excavate from the ground surface without putting people in the excavation and considered blind drilling by Frontier-Kemper Constructors the best option. Design and construction challenges arose throughout both the excavation and lining stages. A large portion of the rock to be drilled was highly fractured. Important risks that were addressed included water loss into the formation, zones of squeezing ground, damage to drilling tools caused by blocky ground and fallout, and potential hazards during cast-in-place concrete lining. Detailed explanations of these challenges and the methods used to overcome them will be described.

Nevertheless, a practitioner knows that there is a broader context in which the practice of sampling takes place. This broader context, being less well defined than the theory of correct sampling, receives correspondingly less exposure which this commentary??prompted by? BG?seeks to rectify. ?Correctness? of a sampler is the central concern of BG, where it is presented as a sharp ?black-and-white ?distinction. Many constitution diagrams do not indicate the limits oJ solid solubility of the silver-rich solid solutions below 200°C. Thermoelectric measurements were employed to determine this limit in the nieighborhood of room temperature. The appearance of a second phase causes a discontinuity to occur in the tkevtrroelectric power as a function of cornposition at constant temperature and pressure. This discontinuity was employed to determine the limits of the silver-rich terzinal solid solutions of the Ag-A l, Ag-As, Ag- Bi, Ag--Ge, Ag-In, Ag-Pb, Ag-Sb, and Ag-Sn systenls at 30°C. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution of binary alloys of silver. The available data have been compiled by Hansen1 and Elliott.2 However, many of the binary diagrams do not show the limits of solid solubility of the silver-rich solutions below about 200° C. This work was undertaken in an attempt to extend these limits to the neighborhood of room temperature . PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pct (by weight) of impurities. The materials were weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony alloys were melted in A1203 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and were poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles; they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. The $-in.-diam ingots were heated to 750°C and were forged and hot-rolled down to 0.1 by 0.1 in. The wires were pickled in a 25 pct HNO3-75 pct H2O solution to remove any oxygen-rich surfaces. The wires were then annealed at 550°C for 2 hr in a dissociated ammonia atmosphere. They were then furnace-cooled for 20 hr to room temperature in this atmosphere. The wires were cold-drawn to 0.0808 in. diam. The finished wires were again annealed at 550°C in the same manner as in the first anneal. Thermoelectric Power. The thermoelectric power of a single specimen of each alloy was determined against pure silver which contained a maximum impurity content of 0.014 pct by weight. The wire specimens were straightened and then cleaned with ethyl alcohol. They were then reannealed in the same way as the finished wires to assure that any residual stress would be at a minimum level. Previous work has shown that the presence of small amounts of stress has the effect of decreasing the thermoelectric power. The alloy specimen was soldered to the pure silver wire to form the measuring junction. A standard set of copper leads was then soldered to the reference junctions of the thermocouple. These junctions were maintained in separate dewar flasks which contained finely shaved melting ice during the test. The thermal electromotive forces of the thermocouples were measured at four temperatures between 15° and 45°C. A known source of electromotive force was balanced against the output of the thermocouple until a null balance was reached. The data were then expressed in terms of the thermoelectric power at 30°C. The results were then converted to absolute thermoelectric power, s303.3 These data have an average error of less than ±0.2 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All of the experimental data are given in Table 11. Since the electromotive forces of the binary alloys of silver were determined against the pure silver from which they were made, the resultant thermoelectric powers are only a function of the intentionally added binary elements at the constant test temperatures. This provides a direct measure of the effects of the alloying elements. The absolute thermoelectric power of an alloy of silver is given4 by:
