"Recent copper price evolution pushes modern mining industry even harder to achieve highest production with maximum efficiency. Operations are bound by numerous contractual and environmental conditions that bring a high degree of complexity to both the operators controlling the process and the plant managers assessing the circuit’s potential and setting the production goals.Advanced process control (APC) for grinding is one important tool to operate this most energy intense area in an optimal way, finding the optimal trade-offs between highest throughput, energy efficiency and product quality based on variable ore properties, production targets and management priorities.ABB’s state of the art control and optimization software platform enables user to design a controller based on model predictive control (MPC). The paper and the presentation show the technology used and the results achieved through an APC controller installed in a pilot project in Aitik (Boliden SA), Sweden. Furthermore, possibilities to interconnect grinding with other areas as stockpile management and flotation with various interconnected APC controllers will be shown. Finally, an example of the return on investment and the payback times based on the increased throughput and better product quality will be presented.INTRODUCTIONDepending on the ore characteristics and the targeted plant capacity, the design of the grinding circuit may vary significantly. Typically, the circuit consists of several mills (rod, ball, SAG, AG) in series and/or parallel with a number of classifiers and sumps at appropriate locations (see Figure 1).The main goal of the grinding section is to reduce the ore particle size to a level that enables efficient separation between gangue and precious metals in the subsiding processing step. The trade-off between quality and quantity has to be made. At the same time, it is also crucial to execute this process at the lowest possible energy and grinding media consumption."

Este trabalho mostra um estudo de caso na Samarco Mineração, onde esta dificuldade foi tratada com o uso do método SADT (Structured analysis and design technique), que permite uma exposição gradual de um tema complexo através de uma estrutura de diagrama. A partir da análise deste estudo de caso, será avaliada a validade do método SADT para este problema.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. In order to reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite, and that the bulk of the recovered pyrite is there either as a result of simple entrainment or by being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

"A comparative study of the intensities of the IR modes in the pjlotoacoustic and. FrIR spectroscopy of amorphous and crystalline SiO2 particles is presented. It is observed that in photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous SiO2, IR modes of surface species are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes of SiO2. This effect, though not yet understood, may find applications in surface science.Since the publication of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect in solids in 1976 [1], a great deal of attention has been paid to the development .of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) into an analytical technique for condensed matter studies, especially when combined with the modern Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer [2-8]. PAS has now been applied to a variety of experimental situations [2, 3] and it is particularly suitable for opaque powders and for cases where ~ample preparation (e.g. mixing with KBr as is usually done in FTIR spectroscopy) is not desirable. Another area of interest is the depth profiling feature of PAS, which is studied by varying the modulation frequency of the incident radiation [2-8]. The one-dimensional Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for non-porous samples has been extended to other cases [9-12]. Recently it has become known [11, 12] that for porous samples with porosity the IR modes are enhanced by a factor proportional toe. This enhancement is due to the pressure wave set up in the interstitial gas in the porous sample and this enhancement has been reported by a number of groups [12-14].In this Letter we report the observation of anomalously large enhancement of the PAS signal for certain surface IR modes on the surface of amorphous silica particles. This observation differs from the previous reports in that certain surface modes are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes. Although the reasons for this enhancement of the surface IR modes in PAS are not understood at present, this observation may open up new approaches to the study of surfaces. Results of these initial observations are given in this Letter. ·Experimental studies reported here were carried out on an FTIR spectrometer (Mattson Instruments, Model Cygnus 100) equipped with an MCT detector. The same instrument was used for PAS studies in conjunction with an MTEC (Model 100) PA cell. The sample cell and the spectrometer are continuously flushed with dry, CO2 free air obtained by the use of Balston Instruments Air Dryer Filter System (Model 75-60). Usually data were collected for 32 scans at 4 cm-I resolution, although both scan and resolution can be varied. For FTIR studies, samples were mixed with IR-grade KBr and pelletised. For PAS, no sample preparation is necessary and data are ratioed against dry carbon black [4, 5]."

"Load tests were carried out to examine the ultimate bearing capacity of short, large diameter bored piles in connection with the construction of a multistory building on the Arabian Gulf in Kuwait. Testing included 0.45 m, 1.0 m, and 1.2 m piles installed through loose sand into a bearing stratum consisting of very dense cemented sands. All tests were carried out to failure. The base resistance and shaft friction were calculated using the Meyerhof method for a layered soil profile. The method employs the standard penetration test N-values. The results indicate that the piles are end bearing piles with a great portion of the pile capacity due to base resistance. The mobilized skin friction is small. The calculated pile capacities were very close to the measured values with the maximum difference not exceeding 10%.INTRODUCTIONShort, large diameter bored piles are used with increasing frequency for heavy structures in Kuwait, and the Gulf region where ground conditions indicate loose deposits of calcareous sands. The piles range in length from 8 m to 15 m with their base located in the dense-to-very dense, cemented sand bearing deposit. The design of these piles requires knowledge of the skin friction and point resistance in these soils. While field tests on driven piles are available (Ismael 1989, Ismael 1999), field test data on large diameter bored piles installed through loose calcareous sands into dense-to-very dense cemented or partially cemented sands are very limited at present. The results of three load tests carried out recently on bored piles at one site in Kuwait have become available. In these tests the failure load was either reached or can be extrapolated from the test results. It is important to examine and analyze the test results for the benefit of the geotechnical research and design engineers.This paper presents the soil conditions, pile installation details, and the pile load test data at the test site located in Shuwaikh, Kuwait. The site is facing the Arabian Gulf. Test results were directly analyzed and the point resistance, and skin friction were calculated. The ultimate capacities of the piles were calculated and compared with the measured values. The influence of the pile diameter on the settlement at ultimate and at working loads is examined"

Due to the known disadvantages of the use of iron silicate slag in the nickel converting stage, i.e., high metal losses, high magnetite content, and low fixation of impurities in the slag, the development of the new proposed "ferrous calcium silicate slag" for smelting and converting processes of nickel is very promising. Hence, considering the successful experimental results of using CaO base slag for the nickel smelting process, a study based on a detailed comparison for the phase equilibrium, and the minor elements distribution between the NilS2-FeS matte with either FeOx-CaO or FeOx-Si02 base slag was investigated. The main results are summarized as: no difference in the nickel losses between both slags was found at high nickel content in the matte, and the fractional distribution analysis for arsenic and antimony pointed out their preferential fixation in the calcium ferrite slag rather than in the iron silicate slag. Considering the energy and pollution issues, the technical feasibility of using calcium ferrite slag in a converting process of the Bessemer matte will have a prominent future for the nickel industry.

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. This paper is based on the experiences, over many years, on the part of numerous authors in the South African mining industry and that of the hot dip galvanizing process and its application as a corrosion protection system. The paper sets out the extensive development, financial resources and stringent operating requirements of the South African mining industry. After many years of research and operational experiences, hot dip galvanizing and when necessary, duplex systems, have been found to meet the demanding requirements of this particular industry. The paper sets out the requirements from the standpoint of corrosion criteria and is followed with a practical example; ?case history? where the corrosion protection properties of hot dip galvanizing are demonstrated. This case history traces the early investigation of the expected corrosive conditions to be encountered in a new mining operation (now 10 years on) and concludes with two follow up visits to the mine in order to examine actual performance of the corrosion protection system after ten years in service.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers. Craigmont Mines Limited mine 50,000 tons of ore and waste per day from the open pit at Merritt, British Columbia. An electric-powered "down-the-hole" drill, a diesel-powered rotary drill and two electric-powered rotary drills have been used. All primary drilling, as a result of cost and operating experience, is now performed with two electric-powered rotary drills. Trials with various loading techniques have increased the amount of AN-FO and decreased the amount of commercially prepared slurries used for primary blasting. Approximately 95 per cent of the primary blasting is accomplished with AN -FO, mixed at the hole. Introduction THE Craigmont mine is located near the village of Merritt, B.C., 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. The concentrator has been in production since September of 1961. Craigmont is a combined open-pit and underground operation. To date, slightly more than 95 per cent of the mill feed has been mined from the open pit. As underground development proceeds, the ore requirements from the open pit will decrease. The average milling rate from September, 1961, to April, 1964, was approximately 4,900 tons per day.

on' January 6, ,1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making (ANPRM) for diesel particulate (DP). The ANPRM identified five areas where the Agency was seeking additional information to assist in the rule making process. These areas were exposure 'limits, risk assessment, consideration of other information, sampling and monitoring methods, and feasibility. The period for submitting information relative to the ANPRM closed July 10, 1992. Prior to issuance of the ANPRM, the agency was involved in conducting studies to evaluate sampling and control technologies and to gather information with respect to occupational exposures to diesel particulate in underground mining operations employing diesel-powered equipment. Since issuance of the notice, additional studies have been conducted to provide supplementary information in these specific areas. Results of these additional studies indicate that average DP levels in coal mines not using aftertreatment range from 0.9 to 2.1 mg/m3. Aftertreatment devices can reduce these levels by approximately 50 to 90 percent. Studies conducted in metal and nonmetal mines showed average DP levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.6 mg/m3.

Martabe gold and silver mine is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste from the excavations is a by-product to be scheduled and used for construction of the tailings storage facility (TSF). These plans need to be aligned to ensure the tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. The TSF embankment construction includes potentially acid forming (PAF) waste that needs to be progressively sealed and rehabilitated to meet the closure requirements of the future.The mine is situated approximately 3 kilometres north of the township of Batangtoru in a seismically active zone between the off-shore subduction zone and the trans Sumatran fault. The mining operation currently includes two open cut pits with a third in development stage, an integrated TSF and dualpurpose valley-fill type waste rock storage facility (WRSF) and TSF embankment. Mine waste is used in construction of the WRSF / TSF embankment, including PAF waste rock, which needs to be scheduled for optimal use in construction activities in a manner that mitigates future acidic and metalliferous drainage (AMD) risks (Pearce and O’Kane, 2017).The Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans must satisfy both optimal pit development to maximise NPV and suitable delivery of waste for effective TSF construction matching the rate of rise of tailings, and consider AMD management, progressive rehabilitation and ultimately effective sustainable mine closure. Low levels of thallium were detected in the mine water drainages, and process water discharges of western mining and smelting operations. This required remediation under state regulatory standards, which allow discharges of no more than .0017 ppm thallium in mine water discharges. Influent streams containing thallium can be mitigated to state discharge standards after a single pass through the series of fluidized upflow columns. Test work to determine the optimal flow rates used pilot scale systems at two separate locations treating 5 - 25 gpm of effluent. The test system at the gold mine mimics the full-scale system, which will be based on the existing upflow carbon tanks that have been converted to zeolite columns. The system installed at ASARCO's East Helena smelter has a far more complex influent stream with a high loading of competing cations. Nevertheless the columns filled with CABSORB® are successfully mitigating the thallium contamination. CABSORB® ZS500RW is a product based on the sodium analog of the zeolite mineral chabazite named herschelite.

Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63 - 125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

O aço rápido em questão foi austenitizado em banho de sal a 1.140°C, 1.160°C, 1.180°C e 1.200°C, temperado ao ar e revenimento a 540°C, 560°C e 580°C. Amostras do aço rápido foram fabricadas e submetidas ao tratamento térmico acima descrito e submetida a ensaios de dureza Vickers e Rockwell C para a determinação das suas respostas ao tratamento térmico de endurecimento e avaliação do pico de endurecimento secundário através dos resultados de dureza.

Vale is in the early stages of commissioning its Onça Puma nickel operations. The project is meant for the production of 58,000 tpa of nickel contained in ferro-nickel, substantially contributing to the company?s vision to achieve world leadership in the nickel business. Mineral resources will be exploited from the homonymous deposits in the Midwest of state of Para, Brazil ? some 100 km southwestwards from the company?s Carajás iron ore properties. Resources as of 83 Mt at 1.73 % Ni will sustain a mine life of approximately 40 years. The property was acquired in late 2005 and Vale has since extended the engineering studies and proceeded with the implementation. Nickel will be mined from saprolitic ore at a rate of approximately 10 Mtpa (ore plus waste) in early years ? ramping up to some 15 Mtpa 7 years later ?, to feed the plant at a rate of 2.5 Mtpa. The process uses conventional RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) pyrometalurgical route whereby the ore is homogenized, calcined in rotary kilns, melted in electric furnaces and further refined to ferro-nickel. The plant has been designed and constructed applying the latest available technology, aligned with Vale?s vison to exceed the highest existing standards for environmental control, health and safety and productivity in the industry. Total investments in these operations are anticipated to correspond to USD 2.3 Bi and will materially contribute to the regional development and well being of the nearby communities and other stakeholders.

Two groups of methods are usually used in design procedures of underground excavation of dimension stone: the analytical and numerical methods of analysis. In all of these methods the in situ rock mass strength represents the main problem. This is due to massive rocks in dimension stone deposits, consisting of large blocks of rock separated with particular discontinuities, for which the Hoek-Brown empirical criterion, developed for jointed rock masses, cannot be realistically used to estimate rock mass strength, especially for a particular block of rock mass or a particular pillar. On the basis of the regular underground excavation process of dimension stone by separating blocks with the flat jack application, we developed the in situ flexural strength testing method. We carried out numerical analyses and evaluation of uncertainty of measurement in order to validate the in situ flexural strength testing method. On the basis of very good validation results, as well as results of the in situ flexural strength testing of exploitable layers on the ?Kanfanar? quarry, we introduced a new coefficient of reduction, which can be used for correction of other strength parameters determined by laboratory testing for obtaining a realistic value of rock mass strength.

A multi-layer gangue roof of a steeply dipping coal seam with a large mining height face area was analyzed using physical simulation, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field measurement methods to evaluate the roof deformation and the mechanisms associated with the instability of the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer. The results indicated that the first weighting step of the multi-gangue roof was larger than that of a non-gangue roof, but periodic weighting steps were similar. The overburden collapse height was lower in the multi-gangue roof than in the non-gangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Moreover, the failure of the coal interlayer was the key factor in the collapse of the multi-layer gangue. A mechanical model was established for the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer based on a revised Prandtl squeezing theory. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the shield support was thusmodeled. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth. It also increased with the interlayer thickness at thicknesses below 2.75 m. It reached a peak when the interlayer thickness was between 2.75 and 3 m and exhibited a decreasing trend when the thickness was greater than 3 m. The results were confirmed using physical simulation and a field test. Certain measures were proposed to control the stability of the gangue roof, including zoning control of the mining height and resistance and advancing the support while maintaining roof contact, thus ensuring the integrity of the support and surrounding rock system.
