A versatile torsion creep tester was instrumented with electromechanical and servomechanical components to operate automatically and unattended, producing digital printed outputs. The apparatus uses an electrical system for applying torsional stresses, and a unique angular transducer as a null detector operating a servocontrolled strain measuring system with the digital readout. The tester is designed to measure the creep in single-crystal or polycrystalline zinc, zinc alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, or other metals and alloys. Applied stresses may be varied from zero up to 2,000 psi in the outermost fibers of a 1/8-inch-diameter, 4-inch-long specimen. Strain readings to 0.001 degree, equivalent to a strain of 2.73 X 10-7, may be made automatically from one every 5 seconds to one per month. The apparatus has provisions for programed temperature control and special atmospheres or vacuum operation. A discussion of applications of the system to other mechanical testing apparatus is included.

"Confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) has been applied to carry out the in-situ observation of melting and solidifying characteristics during iron ore sintering process, accompanied with TG-DSC test. It can be found that apparent Liquid phase forming temperature(LFT) and ending solidifying temperature(EST) is about 1190? and 1160?, respectively. Forming liquid phase during sintering process goes through four courses, these are shrinking, expanding, shrinking and expanding coexisting and expanding totally. For Yandi fine, the corresponding temperature of these four courses is about 1120-1160?, 1190-1196?, 1218-1220? and 1233-1270?, respectively. Although CAJ fine has more difficulty in forming initial liquid phase, but when liquid phase expands, it may have better fluidity and easier for liquid phase formation. Adding enough CaO, CAJ fine takes on high fluidity like Yandi fine, because liquid phase during sintering process is formed mainly by reaction between CaO and Fe2O3.IntroductionConfocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM for short) has been applied to carry out the in-situ observation of metallurgical phenomena, especially in steelmaking process. In relating geology and mineral resources to the nongeologist engaged in planning and zoning, a major hurdle to overcome is often the concept of natural resources. Statements listing such "resources" generally include and often may he limited to such items as "open space", "buildings of historical value", "forest and wilderness areas", and "sites of natural beauty" but seldom mention minerals even where they are of significant economic importance to the area. Unfortunately, mention of mineral resources is often limited to statements calling for tight controls on mining to prevent "ravaging of the land". While, the concept of sequential use involving mining is sometimes acknowledged, it is frequently done in such a manner that this approach is discouraged. In the conflict for land between urban development, recreational open space and mineral extraction, far too often the mineral industry will be the loser. In Missouri, there have long been continuing requests for geologic and resource data for planning purposes from city and county government and from Federal agencies for inclusion in the various river basin studies and Soil Conservation Service projects. These reports vary in detail from concise statements of the geology of an area to rather lengthy reports on mineral and water resources, bed rock and engineering geology characteristics. In most cases, these reports as written were directed to a geologically-oriented reader. Our initial approach to presenting geologic data to the land-use planner was in the area of engineering geology with attempts to show the limitations that bedrock and soil conditions can place on development. A simplified system of flotation testing has been developed recently at the Bureau of Mineral Research of Rutgers University. The technique involves the known principle of skin flotation and can be used with minute quantities of sample and reagents in a beaker. A vessel containing the conditioned sample with added water and flotation reagents is held inclined and rotated slowly. Water-repellent particles come in contact with air and float on the surface of the liquid, while wettable particles are submerged. The float is poured off and filtered whereas the nonfloat remains in the beaker. The filtrate may be returned to repeat the process. This procedure can be made quantitative. Separations are obtained and are remarkably complete and repeatable. The effect of different reagents, optimum quantities, pH and other variables can be determined in a fraction of the time required for conventional testing. However, the method gives no information on the effect of frothers and the quality of froth to be expected in a cell, and it is not practical for particles finer than 200-mesh. Unlike other preliminary tests, separate float and nonfloat products are obtained, and their contents can be determined quantitatively by chemical analysis or grain counts. After the optimum reagent combination has been determined, the effect of fines and frothing may be verified in the conventional flotation cell. On the other hand, agglomeration-tabling can be directly duplicated from beaker tests. Procedure: Five to ten grams of sample are weighed into a 100-ml beaker. Flotation reagents and a small initial quantity of water are stirred together; additional water is then added to produce the proper water-solids ratio. The beaker is then tilted to 45" and rotated slowly. After three to five rotations, liquid and float are poured off and filtered; the filtrate may be recycled until the separation is completed. One test generally requires less than 10 min. Reagent concentration and pH remain quite constant because of the recycling of the filtrate. Two to four tests may be made simultaneously, and the effect of varied conditions may be observed by comparison. Considerable time is saved in preparation and handling since small quantities of sample suffice for a series of systematic tests. Repeatability One test was repeated four times under constant conditions. The sample used was a quartz sand containing approximately 24 pct feldspar and some clay aggregates. The +28-mesh grains had been screened out, and most of those finer than 100-mesh had been removed by hydraulic classification. The results are presented in Table I. For comparison, 500 g of the sample were separated by agglomeration-tabling using the same reagent combination and quantities as given in Table I. The weight percent float was 18.3 pct, composed almost entirely of feldspar and with only traces of quartz. Most of the remaining feldspar was recovered in a middling product with 2.2 pct by weight.

This study was prepared in response to the need for a series of data that reflect the basic flow pattern of energy resources in the United States. To effectively measure and analyze energy,2 it is necessary to prepare balances that reflect both production and consumption, and the various forms energy resources take at different stages of utilization. Before energy can be measured it must also be put into a common unit. In this study the common unit us d is the British Thermal Unit (Btu). The ideal point to survey energy is at the stage of final ultimate use, representing the useful work derived from the interaction of energy inputs and the prime mover. Unfortunately this concept of efficient or useful work from energy output cannot readily be measured in the aggregate. With the present available official data, energy measurement can be carried to the point of calculation of net inputs of energy3 into the economy at various stages of utilization. However, preparation of energy balances, on a net basis is hampered by the fact that this can only be done for years when the censuses of Mineral Industries and Manufactures are taken, usually at 5-year intervals.

Fine Coal Cleaning Processes including froth flotation, aggregative flotation or oil agglomeration, depend upon the wettability of coal particles in the aqueous solution. The wettability of coals of various ranks, hydrocarbon oil treated coals and oil-agglomerates have been measured using film flotation, induction timer, and froth flotation. Various hydrocarbon collector dispersion techniques are used to alter the surface wettability of coal particles. Change in wettability behaviors, measured by flotation responses, due to various ranks with or without of hydrocarbon collector modification are explained in terms of surface chemistry modifications as analyzed by induction time, film flotation as well as DRIFT Spectroscopy. The relationship between the wettability of coals and collector treated coals, and floatability are discussed.

The side-blown converter has been investigated as a possible commercial process for the production of low nitrogen steel. During this work, two converters of 3-ton and 22-ton capacity were operated on a pilot plant basis for a total of 214 heats. The steel made in these converters was low in nitrogen and possessed good cold working properties. Some problems of converter operation remain to be solved. IN plants operating with a high iron capacity, sev-eral different refining methods are used in the conversion of the molten pig iron to steel. These include various ore practices in stationary and tilting open-hearths, the duplex process employing the Bessemer converter and open-hearth, and the Bessemer process. At J&L, a considerable part of the iron produced is handled by the Bessemer process, either alone or in conjunction with duplexing, and therefore an appreciable portion of the steelmaking research effort has centered about the method. This paper covers research work on the development of the side-blow converter for the commercial production of low nitrogen ingots and includes descriptions of the operation of a 3-ton and a 22-ton experimental converter at the Aliquippa Works. The refining of iron to produce steel requires the removal of a large portion of the carbon and silicon and the control of manganese, phosphorus and sulphur which are present in the iron in varying amounts. The first large-scale means of refining iron was the acid Bessemer process which was brought into use almost 100 yr ago. This method, using compressed air as the refining medium, accomplishes substantially complete removal of carbon, manganese and silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are not affected but, by choice of an iron composition sufficiently low in these elements, a commercial product can be produced. Since the process will handle large tonnages rapidly, operates without external fuel and with a minimum of additional equipment, it quickly became the major tool in the early expansion of the steel industry. Later, the basic open-hearth process, by affording control of phosphorus and sulphur and by consuming the large quantities of steel scrap that were becoming available, forced the acid Bessemer process into a secondary position in the industry. During the past two decades the demand for steel to be used in cold forming and drawing operations has gradually increased. Bessemer steel, because of its work hardening and aging characteristics, is not as suitable for these applications as basic open-hearth steel, consequently the decline of the process was accelerated. More recently, because of changing economic conditions, this long range trend appears to have been arrested or perhaps reversed. Ingot production data for recent years furnishes only an incomplete picture of the importance of the converter in the American steel industry; open-hearth furnaces utilize large tonnages of blown metal for which no published statistics are available. Metallurgical Aspects The fundamental difference between Bessemer and open-hearth steels apparently lies not in the method of manufacture but, rather, in the differences in chemical composition of the two steels. It is further believed that the principal features distinguishing Bessemer from open-hearth steel are the higher nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the former. Evidence supporting this position is supplied by tests on laboratory induction furnace heats that were made to contain varying amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen but were otherwise similar to normal low carbon silicon-killed steels. Fig. 1, 2 and 3, summarizing the test results, are taken from G. H. Enzian's paper titled, "Some Effects of Phosphorus and Nitrogen on the Properties of Low Carbon Steels."' Fig. l indicates that phosphorus has a marked effect on the cold work embrittlement of steel as shown by the work brittleness test of Graham and Work.' In the low nitrogen steels, which as a group have the better cold working properties, the effect of phosphorus variations is the more pronounced.

ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test procedure at McGill University is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill University has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GRG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. As a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GRG tests were carried out at McGill University on ores from all over the world. Recently, a modi?ed version of the GRG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GRG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has the advantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. To recognize and honour the contributions made by the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GRG test be named after Laplante.

The injection of heat-bearing fluids may offer a wider application to secondary and tertiary recovery from conventional oil reservoirs than inderground combustion since the process is more easily controlled and the reservoir requirements, in general, are less critical. In all cares, conduction heat losses to overburden and un-derburden will impose an economic limit upon the size of the area which can be swept out from any one injection point for any given set of conditions. The present report describes a method for c.rtin~ating thermal invasion rates, cumulative heated area, and theoretical economic limits for sustained hot-fluid injection at a constant rate into an idealized reservoir. Full allow-ance is made for non-productive reservoir heat losses. Required solutions can be obtained directly from the numerical tables given here, as soon as all operating conditions are specified, withou extensive mathematica1 ~nanipulation on the part of the user. The injection of a heat-bearing fluid into a reservoir is frequently proposed as a means of secondary or tertiary oil production. This form of thermal recovery may offer a wider application to conventional oil reservoirs than underground combustion since the process is more easily controlled and the reservoir requirements, in general, are less critical. Because of its large gross heat capacity, steam appears to be the most efficient heat injection medium, although mixtures of steam and other gases, hot water, hot oil and hot non-condensable gases also have been employed. Whatever the nature of the injection medium, economic evaluation of such thermal recovery processes will depend upon thermal invasion rates, or rates of productive reservoir heating, at any given time after the start of heat injection. In all cases, conduction heat losses to overburden and underburden will impose an economic limit upon the size of the area which can be swept out from any one injection point, for a given set of reservoir conditions, at any given heat injection rate. The present report describes a method for estimating thermal invasion rates, cumulative heated area and theoretical economic limits for sustained heat injection at a constant rate into an idealized reservoir, making full allowance for non-productive reservoir heat losses. Required solutions can be obtained directly from the nu- merical tables given here, as soon as all operating conditions are specified, without extensive mathematical manipulation. It should be noted that ordinary water flooding may be used to move an annular-heated zone outward, even though the economic areal limit for straight heat injection has been reached. Thus well spacing need not be confined to the areal limits as determined here. However, the present calculations do not cover such supplementary heat scavenging programs. The operating element consists of a radial flow system, concentric about the point of injection, with the idealized step function temperature profile illustrated by the dashed line in Fig. 1. The solid curve shown in Fig. 1 gives a qualitative picture of the true radial temperature distribution. It will be shown later that the expressions given below, which are derived from the simplifying step idealization (dashed line in Fig. I), also can be interpreted in terms of the more realistic temperature distribution shown in Fig. 2. For this case, the thermal invasion radius is simply redefined as the distance from injection well to the mid-point of the temperature distribution.

This paper describes how knowledge of the orebody morphology and ore morphology can be used to optimize the planning, mining, and metallurgical output from an open pit copper mining operation, such as to significantly increase the stability of the whole value chain process, and increase the reliability and value of the process outputs. In the case under consideration, the orebody contains both copper and cobalt. This in itself provides a challenge, in that the two metals do not occur in consistent ratios across the orebody as a whole. Furthermore, mineralogical differences within the orebody have a significant impact on plant performance in terms of throughput rates, acid consumption, and recoveries. In order to stabilize and optimize the plant performance, it is necessary to firstly have a complete understanding of the geometallurgical factors that affect performance, and then to have a sound knowledge of how these are distributed within the orebody. These models then inform the mine planning strategy that optimizes cash flow and NPV, and also allow the development of a stockpiling strategy that not only stabilizes the plant, but also allows variations in the plant feed according to ore type and grade in volatile price scenarios. Integral to the realization of these opportunities is the establishment of an appropriate measuring, control, and reconciliation system, customized to the optimization objectives. The paper describes how all of these factors and strategies can be integrated to produce optimal value from the orebody through to final dispatched product. It also shows the significant value that can be released through such an approach.

All projects that are implemented, have been given corporate go-ahead on the basis of a set of clearly defined targets. These are typically a production goal at a capital cost, operating cost and production schedule, that will yield an acceptable return on investment by the companies internal criteria. The challenge for the implementation team is two-fold, firstly to properly define the project criteria prior to board approval and secondly to deliver an operating facility that meets these objectives, in particular the ROI. The paper addresses the issues a project team and the company management must address for a successful project. Key questions that will be explored are: ? What is the status of key technologies? Are they well proven in commercial practice, completely novel or in between? ? Is the project schedule driven by market constraints or cash flow constraints? ? Are the risks of fast tracking worth the potential rewards? ? For a retrofit project, are all the technical and production interfaces and issues known at the time of approval to proceed? ? How much should be invested in technological development and engineering and at which phase? ? For an owner-operator, how much responsibility is it wise or appropriate to push down to vendors? The answers to these questions for a specific project will define how you go about a project, the resources required, the contracting strategies, the phasing and the appropriate level of investment in the definition and procurement phases, prior to starting major capital commitments and construction.

By direct aging treated, creep properties measurement and microstructure observation, the influences of the direct aging treatment on the creep behaviors of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy are investigated. Results show that the creep resistance of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy may be obviously improved by directly aged treatment. Under the applied stress of 700MPa at 660, the creep lifetime of the alloy is enhanced to 126h from 60h. During hot continuous rolling, the deformation features of the alloy are the twinning and the double orientations slipping of the dislocation activated within the twinning regions. After direct aging treated, the alloy displays a smaller grain size, and the finer g² phase is dispersedly precipitated in the matrix of the alloy, which is thought to be a main reason of enhancing creep lifetime of the alloy.

Without adequate soil available, it is difficult to rehabilitate a large area of acid mine waste dump with sustainable plant communities, which has a strong potential acid generation. In the present project, paste tailings capping method has been put forward to reconstruct plant ecosystem on acid mine waste rock dump. This rehabilitation method uses paste tailings as capillary break and plant growth media. The tailings used contained 26.3 per cent of particles of less than 20 ¦m which satisfy the requirement of grain of paste tailings preparation. The tailings are not acid- producing materials. In addition to Cu, total contents of Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As and Ni in tailings are lower than those in local soil. Paste tailings concentration 70 per cent ~ 72 per cent was prepared by concentrating ten per cent tailings by using polypropylenecrylic sodium as flocculation. The potential pollution risks are low by using paste tailings as capillary break layer. Plants directly grown in the tailings did not particularly accumulate Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As, Ni in roots, stem and leaves, which were 0.01 ~ 1.6 times of those grown in soil.CITATION:Yibin, Z, Lianbi, Z, Bin, P and Youhong, Z, 2012. "The mining of iron ore in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (KMA) region of the U.S.S.R. is done mostly by the open-cut method. An assembly of open pits capable of producing about 100 million tons of ore per year makes KMA the largest iron ore field in the world. Three gigantic open pits are currently in operation: Lebedinsky, Mikhailovsky and Stoilensky. These pits are as large as 13 km2 on the surface and as deep as 230 m. The mining operations are constantly faced with the problem of flooding from aquifers that overlie the orebodies; the magnitude of the problem is evident from the fact that the present groundwater inflow to these three pits is about 110 million mt /yr.Under such conditions, safe operations and pit wall stability are of great importance, and this has been accomplished very effectively by the appropriate use of seepage barriers and drainage systems. At KMA, the most important items used in the system of groundwater control are standard pumping wells, raise wells that drain into a 20 km to 30 km long underground drift located just outside the perimeter of the pit, horizontal wells driven through the pit walls, and horizontal drains. This paper describes the mining and engineering technology that have been developed at KMA to control the groundwater systems and protect the mines from flooding."

Studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Bureau of Mines (BOM) have demonstrated that: (1) 90% of diesel particulate is less than one (1) micrometer in aerodynamic diameter; (2) more than 90% of the respirable mass in electric coal mines was greater than one (1) micrometer in aerodynamic diameter; and (3) in coal mines using diesel equipment, average diesel concentrations can represent up to 53% of the MRE respirable coal dust standard. For mines approaching the 2 mg/m3 standard, compliance may be easier to attain by controls directed at diesel exhaust particulate as opposed to coal dust control. First, however, a Simple instrument is needed to measure diesel exhaust particulate concentrations. This paper describes such a sampler, its construction, and use. While results from this sampler are primarily utilized to identify control areas, NIOSH is also using the sampler for estimating worker exposures in epidemiologic studies.

In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 17 and 23, outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible. In view of publications recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 17 and condition 2 on page 23. An explosive or y blasting device enumerated in the permissible Lists of thin Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.

In several of the States of Australia, mining on private property has been seriously hampered by the fact that large areas of land have been alienated from the Crown before the discovery of gold or other minerals. In Western Australia this difficultyhas only occurred to a small extent, and has largely been overcome by an act entituled "An Act to Permit Mining on Private Property, No. XXIX., 'October, 28th, 1898." Under this act, the holder of a miner's right can apply for a gold mining lease on private land; such applicant may treat privately with the owner of such land as to the amount of compensation to be paid for surface ,damage, or the case may be brought before the Warden who will assess the damages. Private land used as a garden, orchard, or vineyard is exempt from lease, unless the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than 100 feet from the lowest part of the surface.No lease shall be granted of any mines under any private land in any municipality unless either the applicant has authority from the owner, or such lease is limited to a greater depth than two hundred feet from the lowest part of the surface.The same regulation applies to leases of private land on which any hospital, asylum, or public building is situated or under or within one hundred and fifty yards laterally of any...

This paper discussed a combined froth flotation and high pressure leaching (HPL) process to recover copper from mine tailings. At first, froth flotation were carried out using the mine tailings sample under various conditions in the presence of different pH (3.5-10) and sulfurizing reagent value (0-1000 g/t), respectively. As a result, optimum condition (sulfurizing reagent of 1000 g/t, pH of 10, PAX (collector) of 100 g/t and MIBC (frother) of 200 g/t) was found for froth flotation of copper. The effects of sulphuric acid concentration, leaching temperature, total pressure (steam pressure plus oxygen pressure) on high pressure leaching (HPL) of mine tailing were investigated using sulphuric acid solution in the presence of oxygen. The best conditions for HPL were obtained to be sulphuric acid concentration: 0 mol/L (water), leaching temperature: 170 ?, total pressure: 2 MPa, leaching time: 1 hr and pulp density: 100 g/L. The leaching rate of copper reached nearly 99 % and the concentration of copper in pregnant leach solution (PLS) was 0.24 g/L. Finally, copper in the mine tailing was recovered using froth flotation followed by HPL. As a result of a combined froth flotation and HPL, the vast majority of copper (99 %) from the mine tailings was extracted.
