FOR a number of years European investigators have used laboratory methods of predicting the probable strength of coke made from coal, and recently several investigators in the United States have reported the use of various tests for this purpose. There is at present no method accepted as standard, however, nor is there even agreement as to the general type of test that should be used. Furthermore, because the details of most of the tests have not been worked out carefully, one investigator can not hope to duplicate the work of another. The extension of coke manufacture to new localities in the United States, and the increasing need for cokes of exceptional qualities made from the most economical mixtures, made it desirable to have some simple laboratory test which will determine whether given coals, alone or blended with other coals, are more satisfactory from the standpoint of coke strength than others of different cost. The work described herein has resulted in the development of a simple laboratory test which, it is believed, can be generally adopted in coal laboratories, and which will give concordant results even though performed by different investigators in different laboratories. The general method of predicting whether a coal or a mixture of coals will produce a strong coke, resistant to crushing and shattering, has been to correlate the known strengths of the cokes produced in commercial ovens with some measurable constituent or with some property of the coals, and then to use the relationship so found for forming an estimate of the coking strengths of coals unknown. Several such correlations have utilized the percentages of the various ultimate constituents of coal, such as the oxygen content and the hydrogen-oxygen ratio;(39)§ other correlations have involved the proportion of a, (3 and y compounds, (17'21,30 or of "oil and solid bitumens."(16,30) Also a relationship has been traced between the coking properties of coal and the rate of change of the resistance offered to the flow of an inert gas by fine particles of the coal while being slowly heated. "Biodegradation of sodium isopropyl xanthate using two types of bacterial strains, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Pseudomonas putida, is demonstrated. At concentrations higher than 50 mg/L, the presence of xanthate in the growth medium resulted in bacterial toxicity, retarding growth kinetics. Adaptation through serial subculturing in the presence of higher xanthate concentrations resulted in the development of xanthate-tolerant bacterial strains. Stress proteins secreted by bacterial cells grown in the presence of xanthate were isolated. Bacterial cells could utilize xanthate as a growth substrate, degrading xanthate species in the process. Acidic metabolic products generated by bacterial metabolism promoted efficient xanthate decomposition. Probable mechanisms for the biodegradation of isopropyl xanthate are illustrated.IntroductionDifferent types of alkyl xanthates (ethyl, isopropyl, amyl, etc.) have been used as flotation collectors in the concentration of sulfidic ores for several decades. Large quantities of waste water and xanthate-containing effluents are generated by ore flotation processes, posing considerable environmental challenges. Billions of cubic meters of such process waste waters are produced annually across the world, most of which are discharged to the environment, often without any treatment. Leakages and accidental release of xanthate reagents from manufacturing plants and during transportation and storage can also contaminate the environment. Residual concentrations of xanthate reagents are encountered in waste effluent, which are found to be toxic to aquatic life and unfit for human consumption (Harris, 1984; Okibe and Johnson, 2002). Further, direct recycling of such waste waters for plant operations can compromise water quality standards required for process operations. The presence of residual xanthate in recycled waters from flotation plants deleteriously influences flotation processes. Xanthate can be easily decomposed at low pH values; however, CS2, which is more toxic, will be produced by the acidification of neutral and mildly alkaline xanthate-containing solutions. Physico-chemical methods such as flocculation, chemical oxidation and decomposition and physical adsorption used to remove residual collector reagents from mill process waters are often expensive and not environment-friendly (Oliveira and Rubio, 2009; Cheng et al., 2012; Molina et al., 2013,)."

Different coal properties are important in SL/RN (coal-based rotary kiln) direct reduction of iron ore, and in electrical smelting of prereduced iron ore. These differences were highlighted when a plant which processes titaniferous magnetite had to change to different coal types after decades of operation. Laboratory simulation was used to evaluate two candidate coals, which were similar in volatile content and rank, but differed in reactive maceral content. Direct reduction was evaluated by isothermal experiments using a packed bed of ore and coal, measuring the off-gas composition to determine reaction rates and departure from equilibrium. These indicated reduction to be under mixed control, and quite sensitive to temperature (confirming that the coal reactivity is of importance). An aspect of electrical smelting was assessed by determining dissolution rates of the coal in molten iron at 1550°C. Dissolution rates did correlate with differences in coal structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction, with the more ordered ("more crystalline") coal dissolving faster. The conclusion is that the coal which is more reactive during direct reduction is less reactive during dissolution. However, it is concluded that controlling the temperature during direct reduction offers a feasible method to reconcile the two process steps.

Refractory boron compounds are shown to resist corrosion by molten zinc. Coatings were made from ferroboron and manganese boron by several methods: welding, hard facing, and pack diffusion; and techniques of coatings are very important. Mechanical failure of the diffusion coatings can be partially eliminated by applying them to type 416 chromium steels rather than carbon steels. Welded coatings made with a tungsten arc are better than those made by other welding methods. Sintered compacts of mixtures of iron and chromium borides developed strengths of about 30,000 psi. They resisted corrosion of zinc at 600°C and oxidation at higher temperatures. MOLTEN zinc rapidly attacks common metals of construction. The rate of attack is greatly amplified at temperatures over 500°C. However, there are many applications where it is necessary, or at least advantageous, to use metal construction, such as for galvanizing pots and zinc smelter equipment. Condensers and agitator linings used in continuous zinc smelting processes are eroded and corroded by violently agitated molten zinc. Pumps, tubing, and other parts to permit transfer of molten zinc would be desirable in many zinc handling operations. The development of metallic materials which are resistant to molten zinc also might permit its use as a heat-transfer medium in modern high efficiency power plants. In reviewing previous work on zinc-resistant metals, it was evident that most of the available data refer to corrosion at temperatures just above the melting point. Tungsten and high Mo-Fe alloys containing more than 80 pct Mo resist corrosion by molten zinc.', ' Imhoff states that because chromium is not attacked by zinc, chromium plating improves galvanizing pot life." Nitrided cast iron has been used in die-casting machines' where the molten alloy is 96 pct Zn and 4 pct Al. Other metals that have been suggested as of possible value for zinc resistance are columbium, tantalum, and titanium.V he corrosion of steel by zinc has been discussed by many authors,z, "2 None of these materials resisted corrosion by molten zinc at the temperatures used in this investigation, i.e., 600" to 700°C. I. Exploratory and Resistant-Coating Tests To make a study of zinc-resistant metals, exploratory tests were conducted to sort out roughly those materials which seemed most worthy of further development. This preliminary study included both solid metals and surface coatings. Exploratory Corrosion Tests in Molten Zinc—In initiating a study of this problem, numerous samples of metals and alloys were evaluated by dynamic corrosion tests made at 440 °C. Each metal was tested in its most readily available form, which, because of shape and size, was often unsuited for standard corrosion testing. The equipment used for dynamic corrosion testing of all materials, except in a few initial experiments, is shown in Fig. 1. Samples were tied to tungsten rods with tungsten wire, immersed in the zinc, and revolved at 12 rpm about the circumference of a 4 in. diam circle. Speed of travel was about 12.5 fpm. The molten zinc was protected from oxidation by an atmosphere of carbon monoxide, or, at a later period in the program, by a 9:1 mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen. When the effect of both molten metal and atmosphere was desired, the zinc level was lowered. Special high grade zinc was used in all of the corrosion tests. Corrosion losses for materials tested are shown in Tables I and 11. Whenever the materials were available in suitable form, the losses are reported in mils per year. It was recognized that weight losses on irregularly shaped specimens did not show the corrosion rate but the important consideration—poor resistance to corrosion—could be determined readily.

Experiments have been carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064 m x l.5 m bubble column equipped with a Mott porous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and air flow rate are presented and discussed.

This paper outlines our attempt to establish a recycle process of nickel in the spent baths and waste rinse water of electroless nickel plating plants using solvent extraction and solvent-impregnated support, Solvent extraction studies of nickel from actual spent baths revealed that (i) nickel is efficiently extracted by a hydroxyoxime extractant such as LIX84I at a pH greater than 6 and is readily stripped with sulfuric acid, and (ii) the mixtures of LIX63 and acidic organophosphorus extractants (D2ERP A, PC88A, and Cyanex 272) enhanee the nickel extraction efficiency to a sufficient degree without pH adjustment, but at the same time, reduce the stripping efficiency. The application of acidic organophosphorus extractants to selectively remove impurity metal ions (iron and zinc) from a real spent bath before extracting nickel lead to the finding that PC88A and Cyanex 272 effectively remove iron and zinc without pH adjustment leaving nickel in the raffinate. The removal of nickel from the waste rinse water was also studied. Solvent-impregnated supports with a macroporous resin and oil sorbents made of natural kapok fiber and synthetic fiber as supports were applied using D2EHPA and LIX860 as the extractants. During the batch operation, nickel is removed with a high efficiency without pH adjustment. During the column operation, however, the effective removal is hindered by (i) the dissolution of the nickel-D2EHPA complex into the aqueous phase in the high loading region, and (ii) the slow removal rate of the LIX860-impregnated support.

Heavy mineral mining has been a relatively small but important Florida industry for over sixty years. Geology of the Florida heavy mineral deposits is similar. Each formed along active coastlines after which the titanium minerals were upgraded in TiO2 by post depositional oxidation and leaching of the iron. There are four heavy mineral plants currently Operating in Florida. Ore is mined by dredges and the heavy minerals concentrated by gravity separation. The heavy mineral concentrates are further processed with high tension and electromagnetic separators to Produce titanium mineral concentrates for TiO2 pigment manufacturing plants. Zircon sand is produced as a co-product at all of the Florida plants. Staurolite is produced by Du Pont and Titanium Enterprises. Du Pont also markets a kyanite-sillimanite product. (Monazite is produced by Humphreys and Titanium Enterprises). Reclamation of mined-out land is an important part of heavy mineral mining. At the Du Pont plants soil is removed ahead of the dredge and placed over the quartz sand tailings. Grass is planted after fertilizing. A year later the land is fertilized again and pine trees planted. Most of the heavy mineral deposits now being mined will be nearly exhausted by the end of the century. New deposits to be mined in the 21st century will probably be smaller and lower grade than those now being mined. Advances in mineral processing technology will have to be made to allow these lower grade deposits to be mined economically.

The Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) provides a cost effective solution for the rapid construction of retaining and cut-off walls using new equipment developed from diaphragm wall cutter technology. CSM consists of cutting and mixing drums mounted on compact hydraulic motors. Soletanche Bachy CSM has been designed to leave the space above the tool free, thereby mixing the soil efficiently during all the phases of the wall construction, with high penetration rates. The precise positioning and verticality of the wall is achieved using a kelly bar and full monitoring. Soletanche Bachy CSM is a versatile equipment which can be mounted on various carriers: pile rigs, hydraulic crane, carrier equipped with telescopic mast. The major phases of Soletanche Bachy CSM development are presented, including the results of an extensive trial carried out in Le Havre (France). The soil consists of hydraulic fill with soft soil lenses overlying sandy deposits. 20m deep panels were constructed to support a rectangular shaft. During the construction, and after its completion, the shaft was subjected to an extensive series of tests followed by a partial excavation. The paper discusses also the future development of the technique and its potential applications.

The steel industry is currently exploring hydrogen-enriched blast furnace operations as a means to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is a need to investigate the gas permeability behaviour of mixed burdens comprising of lump and sinter as the current knowledge regarding their behaviour is limited, particularly with regards to hydrogen enrichment. In the present study, a series of interrupted softening and melting (S&M) under load tests were carried out in a hydrogen rich gas environment (~15 per cent) in the temperature range from 1000 to 1300°C by placing different types of ferrous ore layer including Newman Blend Lump (NBLL), sinter and sinter-NBLL mixed burden in between two coke layers. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was then used to scan the interrupted test samples. Scanned images were first analysed using an image processing workflow implemented in ImageJ and the material simulator GeoDict (v2022) to segment different phases such as coke, ferrous and void based on their grey scale values. A quantitative analysis was then performed on the segmented images to estimate the phase volume fraction as well as bed permeability. Bed void fraction thus obtained agreed well with the bed contraction data obtained from the S&M test. It was further noted that both ferrous layer void fraction and bed permeability decreased linearly with increasing temperature for all ore samples. The mixed burden voidage changed in a similar fashion to the sinter, demonstrating a high temperature interaction between the two materials

Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

THE constitution of the iron-silicon alloys containing from 14 to 33.4 weight per cent silicon has been studied by a number of investigators, whose results have been reviewed in a monograph published by the Engineering Foundation1. In these previous researches, the solubility of silicon in iron was determined by thermal, microscopic or magnetic methods and the compound Fe3Si2 was reported to be stable at tempera-tures from 0 to approximately 1030° C. This paper describes the results of an X-ray investigation of the solubility of silicon in iron and gives data which prove that the Fe3Si2 phase is unstable below 825° C. In order to obtain the present results on the solubility of silicon in iron, the authors have utilized the lattice constants of the alpha-phase iron-silicon alloys given in a previous publication2, and also some addi-tional data which will subsequently be described.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the Illawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out. The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45% and 60% (mineral matter free). Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. I Coke strength indices increased with rank and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes will require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal. . T Use of- petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved. Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilised to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of-the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

"In this study, the adsorption characteristics of tannin acid in aqueous solution were investigated using regenerated activated carbon (AC), with the aim to remove the tannin acid organic matter from the solution after zinc hydrometallurgy and Ge precipitation. Results showed the temperature has little effect on the adsorption ability (q.) of the regenerated activated carbon. The experimental equilibrium data were tested for the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption equilibrium was better described by the Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.99). Pseudo first- and second-order kinetic models were used for describing kinetic data. It was determined that the kinetics of tannin acid removal was well fitted by second-order reaction.IntroductionGermanium recovery is a complex processes [1]. Hydrometallurgical processes are favoured and these are based on the precipitation of germanium as hydroxide or sulphide or alternately with tannic acid [2]. However, in the germanium recovery process, too much tannin is consumed by the germanium-tannins complexation process, and results in a high content of tannic acid remaining in solution, which is harmful to the valuable metal recovery [3]."

An alkaline leaching procedure for recovering uranium from a submarginal 0.1 percent Ug Og calcareous carnotite ore from the Shiprock , N. Mex . , area was investigated . A recovery of 72 percent of the uranium was attained in a preliminary test embodying the commonly accepted practice of ( 1 ) alkaline leaching at 90° C , ( 2 ) multiple stage filtration and washing for recovery of a clear pregnant solution , and ( 3 ) caustic precipitation of uranium as sodium diuranate , with recycle of the barren solution to the leaching and washing circuits . Ion exchange resins were used in a second , less orthodox test that comprised ( 1 ) sodium carbonate leaching of minus 10- mesh ore at 90 ° C to dissolve the uranium , ( 2 ) filtration to recover the leaching reagent for reuse , (3 ) recovery of the uranium- bearing solution in the filter cake as a pregnant slime slurry by repulping of the filter cake followed by a sand- slime separation and countercurrent decantation (CCD ) washing for rejection of the sand fraction , (4 ) recovery of the dissolved uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by resin- in- pulp (RIP ) , ( 5 ) elution of the uranium from the resin with a solution of ammonium chloride acidified with hydrochloric acid , and (6 ) precipitation of the uranium with ammonia gas . About 83 percent of the uranium was extracted from the ore and 95.5 percent of the dissolved uranium recovered by ion exchange . Improved laboratory results were obtained using the RIP process , but larger scale tests would be necessary for economic evaluation of the two processes .

The Maine Department of Transportation offered this challenging design-build project for a new, 12-span, bridge over the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. This structure would be built to replace the existing Carlton Bridge connecting the village of Bath, Maine to neighboring Woolwich, Maine. The design build team of Flatiron Structures, Inc., and Figg Engineers, Inc., elected to design and build a segmental concrete bridge. Site conditions dictated that this bridge would be supported primarily on deep foundations. Case Foundation Company joined the project team in the winter of 1997 to install twenty-two, eight foot diameter drilled shafts. The drilled shafts were designed with 8' diameter, permanently cased shaft sections and 7.5' diameter rock sockets. Shaft lengths ranged from 20' long near the river's edge to 100' deep in the middle of the river. Rock socket lengths ranged from 12' to 30' deep. Two Osterberg Cell load tests were conducted on production drilled shafts. Figg Engineers utilized the results of the load tests to "fine-tune" the rock socket design during construction of the drilled shafts. Construction of the drilled shafts proved to be very challenging and called on every member of the design-build team to work together throughout the project. One of the most challenging aspects of this project was in the installation of the 8' diameter permanent casing and drilling of the rock sockets. Early in the project, it became apparent that the top of bedrock was broken and unstable. This condition limited the advancement of the permanent casing and the affect of a "seal" at the top of rock socket. As a result, as the rock socket was advanced, loose material spilled into the hole and stopped progress of the socket. In order to resolve this problem, the design-build team developed a redesigned drilled shaft which included the installation of a steel sleeve to seal off the unstable rock formation. Following installation of the sleeve, the rock socket diameter was reduced to 7' diameter and advanced additional length to achieve required design capacity. All drilled shafts were installed with equipment supported on floating barges. Water access, along with the long shaft lengths and very hard bedrock required the use of cranes and drilling equipment that far exceeded the requirements of typical drilled shaft projects. This paper will discuss the relationship between design, construction, and equipment utilization on this challenging design-build project. [ ]

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and point cloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors such as site specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using discontinuity set extractor (DSE). Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time. The analysis determined that the automated mapping algorithm was able to identify the same discontinuity sets that had been manually mapped. The automated mapping software mapped an excessive amount of smaller fractures, which caused the comparison of both mapping techniques to be unsuccessful in terms of trace length and spacing.

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining. This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g,.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes. In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased. Tests indicated that methane and water infused in bleeder holes traveled along the bedding planes of the Pittsburgh coalbed at a faster rate than across the planes. Methane associated with coalbeds is produced by the slow decomposition of carbonaceous material in the absence of air and the presence of water. It is lighter than air and, depending on its concentration, forms an inflammable or explosive mixture with air. It is believed that methane is entrapped in and around the pores of the coal and adjacent strata--often under great pressure. For reference, the thermal expansion curves f several types of glass used for sealing by the lamp and tube industries are given (Figs. 1 and 2). This paper covers a detailed investigation of the thermal expansion of a series of nickel-iron alloys in which the nickel content varies from 30 to 70 per cent. Particular stress is laid on the alloys that contain between 40 and 55 per cent Ni.
