The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

The practice of recording blasts for quality control purposes has been conducted for several decades. However, at the low frame rates of a standard video camera, essential data is frequently missed as it occurs when the shutter is closed between frames.The use of high-speed video for the research, development and monitoring of the performance of blasting procedures is a well proven but under-utilised practice.The recent development of low cost, easy to use high-speed digital cameras and user friendly software can deliver a capability into mine management as a day-to-day production tool that can greatly improve blasting performance and reduce costs.Digital high-speed video and image analysis software can accurately quantify each blast. Analysis of the images can facilitate the identification of causes of variance from design, geology changes, errors in blast practice and areas of poor performance. The use of high-speed video greatly enhances the audit and review processes so that future blast design can be quickly and appropriately modified to deliver improved blasting performance and reduced costs.The three videos demonstrate the differences between standard video and high-speed video and the detail that can be obtained from them. These videos of open cut blasts can be used to identify blast performance variances. Capturing images at 1000 frames per second allows the analysis on a millisecond timescale where detonator timings, fragmentation, venting, fume generation and flyrock can be accurately identified.CITATION:Adermann, D, Chalmers, D, Martin, C and Wellink, S, 2015. Lead-tin solders are commonly used in electronic packaging due to their unique combination of electrical, chemical, physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Since it is known that lead and lead containing alloys cause great environmental concern and health hazards it is necessary to replace lead in solder materials. Besides the environmental concerns new technologies in electronic packaging require new and improved solders. In most cases the new solders will consist of ternary or quarternary alloy systems, the main component will be tin or indium and the second element could be bismuth, silver, copper and gold and to improve certain properties a third element will be added. For a third element zinc, nickel, antimony and aluminum can be considered. This report will concentrate on solders containing zinc as an environmental safe element.

The HIsmelt technology was developed and proven in Western Australia (WA) after more than 30 years and several billion dollars of research and development. The HIsmelt technology was transferred to China and is now successfully operating at the Molong plant in Shandong Province, China using WA iron ore fines as the major feedstock. Several more plants are under construction in China, and the technology has been approved by the Chinese Government as an environmentally acceptable alternative to the blast furnace. The unique flexibility of the HIsmelt process offers multiple pathways to decarbonise the production of steel in the near future. These pathways include:  Use of sustainably grown biomass converted to Biochar to replace coal as the reductant.  Pre-reduction of iron ore fines using hydrogen or biomass to direct reduced iron (DRI) powder.  Capture of carbon dioxide from the HIsmelt off gas and geo-sequestration underground. These pathways are highly suitable for the Australian iron ore industry as they utilise:  The large areas of land and long growing season available in Australia for the production of large tonnages of sustainably grown biomass.  Coarse iron ore fines directly without the need for fine grinding and pelletising.  Existing oil, gas and other underground gas reservoirs to store carbon dioxide. The HIsmelt technology will allow Australia to transition from ‘Asia’s quarry’ to Asia’s supplier of low cost, low carbon and high quality metallics that are required to produce ‘green’ steel with net zero carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, HIsmelt pig iron can be converted locally into steel via electricarc or basic-oxygen steelmaking furnaces to supply all of Australia’s demand for green steel.

This article is a review of previous discussions about underground mining method selection and classification with the purpose to clearly define and classify the two groups of variables (indicators) involved in the mining selection process: key deposit indicators (KDIs) and key mining method indicators (KMIs). This paper provides a simple and clear approach for the classification and selection of a feasible underground mining method based on a predetermined set of favorable deposit characteristics, which are defined as key deposit indictors (KDIs). This article also gives a summary of the key advantages and disadvantages associated with every underground mining method based on their key mining indicators (KMIs). The selection method given in this paper is based on defining field KDIs and comparing them to the KDIs that are favorable to every considered mining method. By cross validating a matrix of favorable KDIs, the paper presents a simple approach to rank several underground mining methods using a scale from favorable to less favorable accordingly to the ore deposit characteristics (KDIs). KMIs are used to further complement KDI rankings by analyzing every method’s KMI performance based on the expected productivity of the mining operation being considered. To further assist the reader through the selection process, this paper gives basic sketches representing each of the primary underground mining methods discussed in this paper. Each method is given using the same 3D isometric view as spatial reference to assist the reader with visual interpretation and comparison between methods.

"A study has been undertaken at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) limestone Experimental Mine to determine new fans set up and wiring options.to install additional mine ventilation capacity. Selection for main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Available fans for ventilating the mine are Joy and Alphair axial fans each of 24 kW each and two Spendrup booster fans of 12 kW each. The installation of main mine fans on the surface and underground entails numerous considerations. Design of a ventilation network for the Experimental Mine incorporating surface and booster fans has been accomplished using Ventsim Visual program software. The ventilation network has been separated into two segregated parts. A main surface fan and a booster fan have been used in each segregated part of the network. The mine has had a vane axial Joy fan in place for many years. The Alphair 4800 VAX 1800 full blade adjustable pitch vane axial fan was selected and installed as the other surface fan and eventual replacement for the Joy fan. Main surface fans have been connected individually to booster fans in series. The Alphair main surface fan has been installed vertically. Four different wiring options and related cost estimations for addition of the new main fans to the ventilation network have been considered. The analysis resulted in an innovative steel frame design used to allow the fans, when necessary, to be moved to the side of the shaft so that blast pressures do not damage the blades. INTRODUCTION Main fans are the heart of a mine’s ventilation network and play a key role in supplying required airflow (Haghighat, 2014). The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has been developed in uniform limestone with few stratigraphic features. The mine floor is approximately horizontal and water drains well. A study has been carried out on MS&T Experimental Mine. Selection of main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Ventsim Visual computer simulation has been used to assist in design of the ventilation network. Wiring circuits, fan foundations and flexibility have been considered as the three main parameters for surface fan installation at the Experimental Mine. Two surface and two underground wiring options and three surface set up options and related cost estimates for the new surface fan system were investigated. Frequent use of explosives in the mine occurs throughout each year. Flexibility in changing the position of a surface fan is important. A number of options have been considered for the location of a vertical main fan positioned on the upcasting shaft. The mine is used for a variety of purposes and flexibility has a high priority amongst design considerations."

MANY baffling problems of crustal geology-of warping and folding, elevation, subsidence, and great dislocations of the earth's surface-may now be on the verge of yielding to the science of geophysics. Electric, magnetic, gravitational, geothermal, and seismic methods are being turned to the gathering of geological evidence buried by deep layers of rock, or lying beneath the waters of the oceans. In this hope, B. L. Miller expresses the opinion that these geophysical studies will sup- ply useful data bearing-on some of the more theoretical problems of North American geology. Among these for example, is the explanation of how Appalachia disappeared. This ancient land mass is supposed to have foundered beneath the Atlantic Ocean after the close of the Paleozoic era and the question arises, was it warped or faulted downward? The geophysical data, though meagre, indicate that the surface of the dense, basal rocks, the probable remnant of ancient Appalachia now underlying the Continental Shelf, slopes downwards to a depth of some two miles below sea level at a distance of 140 mi. from shore: thus suggesting that the subsidence was the result of warping downward rather than abrupt faulting.

This: report gives data on the installation and operation of a packaged-unit heat-pump installation in a residence in McLean, Va., a suburb of Washington, D. C. The original equipment, installed in January 1947, was one of the first of 50 experimental Marvair units manufactured by the Muncie Gear Works, Inc., Muncie, Ind. The compressor unit of this installation was replaced by the company in September 1947, with a modified commercial model. The commercial unit and the original pump and fan accessories have been used as the sole means of heating (and cooling in summer! the. residence for the subsequent five winters and summers. The conclusions and data given herein, therefore, cover 6 winters sad 6 summers of heat pump operation, including 1 winter when temperatures averaged below normal for 2 months and the following summer when temperatures were above normal.

There is a natural resistance to change in any form. When it comes to implementing a game-changing technology like autonomous haulage on an operating mine site, the resistance can at times appear insurmountable. Whether based on real information or misguided preconceptions, it?s essential that we don?t underestimate the effort it will take to overcome this resistance, while clearly recognizing when it?s worth the effort. These realizations did not happen overnight for sites where autonomous haulage has been implemented. Nor did they happen overnight for manufacturers of autonomous mining equipment. Caterpillar, for example, began building toward autonomy more than 30 years ago and had a truck operating in the mid-1990s. Lessons learned during those early years led to the realization that there was much more to be learned ? not just about the machines themselves, but about the systems and knowledge that must be in place for a successful implementation. Working closely with customers, initiating real-life demonstrations on mine sites, having discussions with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders ? these and many other activities were necessary before autonomy could be fully and successfully launched. After decades of effort, Caterpillar?s first official commercial autonomous mine site went to work in 2011 in Farmington, NM.

Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No.4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10-20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove grindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275" C to 325" C range.

INTRODUCTION An efficient refuse-disposal system is a necessary part of the modem cleaning plant. The large-scale refuse system and disposal area, engineered for the lifetime of the plant, has become more important due to the greater tonnages of refuse produced from increased quantities of mechanically mined and prepared coal. Laws and increased government regulations have affected the design and operation of disposal systems. THE EFFECT OF MINE AND PLANT OPERATION Refuse disposal starts at the mining face. The mining system, the type of roof support, the machinery used, and the degree of discipline at the face contribute to the amount and type of refuse that must be removed through the disposal system. Economies gained through modification of the mining system or mining machinery may be partially offset by increased dilution of the mined coal with impurities from associated rock formations. In some cases the change in the mining system and equipment has reduced the dilution. Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

Accidents involving underground rail transport were analyzed to quantify the magnitude and the operational requirements for individual mine car braking systems. The results showed that the brake preventable accidents represent only 2% of the total underground fatal accidents and less than 1% of the total underground nonfatal accidents. In addition, the brake preventable accidents are expected to decline over the next decade. The costs of accidents involving deaths and Injuries were determined using various well accepted methods. The costs of a brake retrofit program for all operating underground coal cars were developed separately for small and large coal mines. Costs of retrofit brakes, new car brakes, maintenance, inspection and repair facilities were included in the esimates. The analysis showed that a retrofit program would not significantly increase safety, and that the program cost would greatly exceed the corresponding expected benefits.

This report describes methods and techniques employed by The Glidden Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, in explorating an ilmenite-bearing sand deposit in Ocean County, New Jersey, during 1960 to determine ore reserve potential and the feasibility of mining and establishing a milling plant on the property for the production of ilmenite concentrate. The property covered approximately 1,250 acres. Comprehensive sampling by water-jet drilling indicated the deposit averaged 20 feet in thickness and contained 4.5 percent heavy minerals, of which 80 to 85 percent was ilmenite and leucoxene. Average depth of the water table as determined by auger boring was 16.8 feet. Pilot plant tests indicated that circular concentrators in combination with spiral concentrators would recover at least 80 percent of the heavy mineral content of the sands. It was estimated that sufficient ore reserve tonnage had been developed to supply the company's Baltimore chemicals division, pigments department, with a suitable grade ilmenite concentrate for a period of 20 years at the present rate of pigments production. The property was designated as Lakehurst mine and plans are in progress for mining development and plant construction.

The Scully Mine, situated in the Labrador Trough near the Quebec-Labrador boundary, is one of the world's largest continuous ore deposits. This paper outlines the sequence of the mining operations from the planning stages to the delivery of the ore to the crusher at an average rate of 50,000 tons per day, 7 days per week. The principal equipment required to maintain this production rate includes four 12.\1.1-inch rotary drills, seven 8-cu.-yd electric shovels and a fleet of large haulage trucks. Particular attention is given to grade control, programmed by computer, drilling and blasting techniques and operational aspects inherent with open-pit mining in Canada's North.

The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.
