The fine Ti oxide inclusions precipitated during solidification are favorable for intragranular ferrite nucleation. The oxygen content before solidification affects the composition and size of inclusions. The composition of precipitated inclusions in Mn-Ti alloyed steel was studied by means of thermodynamic calculation and experiment in this paper. The micro-segregation of Mn, Ti and O during solidification was considered in calculation and unidirectional solidification apparatus was employed in experiment to ensure that alloy elements diffused along solidification direction. The results showed that: inclusions are mainly Ti oxide when oxygen content is 10ppm; they are Ti oxide and Mn-Ti oxide when it is 20ppm; Mn-Ti oxide dominates when it is 30ppm. With the increase of oxygen content, the size of inclusions increases. The maximum oxides size is about 3µm from statistical results of experiment.

The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the managements and employees of many mines are observing to forestall similar occurrences. The Bureau has conducted research on roof-control and other mine problems, but a comprehensive study of other fatal accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities in the United States was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May, 1941, Public Law 49; and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine-inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers' organization have jurisdiction at the mine.

Incorporation of heat exchangers into drilled shaft foundations is a novel approach to both improve the energy efficiency of building heat pump systems and provide necessary structural support using the same construction materials. In an effort to quantify the structural and heat exchange performance of deep foundations used as ground-source heat pumps, two instrumented test foundations were constructed as part of a new construction project in Denver, CO. They will be integrated into the conventional ground-source heat pump system for the building. This paper focuses on the lessons learned from the construction process for these energy foundations.

The effect of the anodic polarization on the composition and morphology of the surface layer formed on chalcopyrite during ammonia–ammonium chloride leaching was investigated. The anodic polarization on the chalcopyrite electrode was used for oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, and the resulting oxidized layers were characterized by XPS, SEM and optical microscopy. The results show that oxide layers exist on the chalcopyrite surface with or without any anodic polarization in the leaching solution at ambient atmosphere. However, the composition and morphology of the layers are strongly depended on the extent of polarization. The distribution of FeOOH and Fe2O3 within the oxidized layer was inhomogeneous for the sample at the open circuit potential (OCP). The composition and morphology of the oxidized layers which were formed at anodic potentials lower than 0.3 V versus SCE were similar to those of the chalcopyrite at the OCP. At anodic potentials above 0.4 V, the oxidized layers contained many cracks, and they were fragile and exfoliated. Furthermore, the sulfide had been oxidized to sulfur species with higher oxidation states. The oxidation of the chalcopyrite seemed to undergo a cyclically oxidative process that suggested growth and spallation of oxidation layers on chalcopyrite in a layer-by-layer sequence.

THOUGH air jets occupy only a minor role in the ventilation of mines and other enclosures, their importance in this respect is greater than is commonly recognized and may be considerably increased as our conception of their modes of operation becomes clearer. The object of this paper is to discuss some of the ways in which air jets are involved in mine ventilation and some possible applications to the ventilation of mines and other enclosed spaces. The mention of air jets ordinarily suggests the use of some form of an air injector, such as the Venturi blower occasionally used for auxiliary ventilation in mines, or the Saccardo (injector) system used to a limited extent for ventilating railroad tunnels. Actually, the term covers such common phenomena as the discharge of air from fan pipes and coal-mine line brattices, and even from smoke stacks and fans. A knowledge of the general mode of air entrainment by jets also helps to explain certain phenomena-some mine-gas explosions, for instance-that otherwise would remain obscure. Jet action has been involved in three recent series of Bureau of Mines experiments in which the author has participated: experiments on fan-pipe discharge, on the dilution of gases discharged from a stack and on the ventilation of a ship's hold. Available data on the discharge of jets into large openings and on the design and performance of air injectors have been analyzed in considerable detail and supplementary experiments are planned for after the war. The results of the fan-pipe experiments have been combined with the analyses of data on jet discharge into large spaces, and have been published.1 The results of the stack-gas dilution tests, which refer to a jet discharged into a crosswind, have also been published2 and a paper on the design and performance of injectors has been prepared for publication.3 These technical experiments and analyses form the background and the documented evidence for the following nontechnical discussion of the use of air jets in mine ventilation. JET CHARACTERISTICS The jets commonly encountered are those in which the air is in turbulent-as opposed to laminar, or streamline-motion. The characteristics under discussion apply only to such turbulent jets and have their basis in theories of the mixing of turbulent air currents. Such jets have basic characteristics that are present, though variable in form, regardless of whether the jet expands freely in space, whether the expansion is limited by adjacent walls, or whether the jet propels air through a flow circuit. They expand at definite angles and entrain the surrounding air, even though the entrained air must be obtained by recirculation of their own air streams. The tracer gas method of conducting ventilation surveys is a means of determining air quantity in underground mines with knowledge of the concentration of the tracer in the atmosphere and the flow rate at which the tracer is being released. The technique is useful in inaccessible areas of underground mines and areas where traditional point measurement of velocity is not practical. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the industry standard tracer(Kennedy 1987) used in underground mines because it is safe, stable, and not naturally occurring in the mine environment. The implementation of a second tracer will increase the versatility of the tracer gas technique allowing for simultaneous releases for the study of interrelated ventilation circuits, and for conducting multiple experiments in less time. This paper will detail the selection of perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) as a novel tracer with sensitivity, physical properties, and analysis characteristics similar to SF6. Methods for the release of liquid PMCH into underground mines will be recommended, and the vulnerabilities of sample loss due to condensation of vapor PMCH will be explored. Finally, the benefits and implications of using PMCH as a second tracer will be discussed.

Dry room equipment at Donora Zinc Works is of the design which prevailed at the time the plant was built in 1915. It consists of 11 adjoining rooms, each being 99 ft long, 11 ft wide, and 7 ft high and having a capacity for 1040 retorts. Heat is supplied by steam coils beneath the slatted wood floor and by warm air ducts at the ceiling. Drying practice is about the same as that generally followed in the industry except that, under normal zinc furnace operations, the maximum drying time is 45 days. During certain seasons of the year the drying process was seriously affected by varying weather conditions which frequently resulted in a scrap loss of 5 to 7 pct. Because of these unfavorable conditions, which caused uneven drying and strains in the retorts, increased retort failures in the zinc furnaces were recorded. Regulation of temperature and humidity under all conditions appeared to be the logical solution of this problem. Controlled drying had been developed for a number of ceramic products and investigation of several such drying processes in this area revealed favorable results. Along with control of drying conditions and the attendant decrease in scrap losses, plant operators also reported a material reduction in drying time. Another factor affecting the decision to proceed with this development was the drastic change in market conditions for retort clay. Curtailment of shipments from the chief source of supply made it necessary to proceed with blending of other available clays, but quality of these clays was questionable for adequate retort life in the 24 hr furnace cycle. Rapid furnace testing of new mixtures was desirable but impossible with the prolonged drying schedule. Therefore development of a controlled drying process for zinc re- torts offered the solution to the problem of rapid testing of retort mixtures. Description of Process and Equipment The freshly extruded retort is cylindrical in shape, 58 in. long, 9 in. id and has 1 1/8 in. side walls. One end is closed and approximately 2 in. thick. The moisture content of this "green" retort is about 17 pct which means a necessary removal of 30 lb of water per retort. Retorts are set on the slatted floor of the dry room with the closed end down. The controlled drying process depends upon the circulation of a large volume of conditioned air at low velocity. Antimony and bismuth in copper electrorefining electrolytes can cause cathode contamination, leading to the careful control of their concentrations. This study examined the laboratory scale removal of bismuth and antimony from an electrorefining electrolyte using a solvent extraction mini-pilot plant. The ability of a proprietary phosphonic acid ester extractant (REX-2) in a commercial diluent was studied in a simulated commercial setting. Antimony and bismuth were both extracted effectively from the electrolyte (72% Bi and 70% Sb removed) and Bi was effectively stripped (92% Bi recovered) with 400 g/L sulfuric acid. A final strip solution was obtained from the SX circuit containing 0.36 g/L Bi, 0.043 g/L Sb, 1.3 g/L Cu, and 0.18 g/L As. Unfortunately, most of the extracted Sb remained in the organic phase. Following the pilot study, experiments were performed to examine the precipitation of bismuth from the aqueous strip phase and the removal of antimony loaded on to REX-2. INTRODUCTION For many years, antimony and bismuth have been some of the most problematic impurities in copper electrorefining (ER) (Bardwell & Lapee, 1933). Along with surface roughening, high concentrations of Sb and Bi can contaminate the copper cathode and precipitate at the copper grain boundaries. This drastically reduces the drawing ability of the metal (Bender & Emmerich, 2016). For these reasons, it is necessary to control Sb and Bi concentration in the cathode, which is done by controlling their concentration in the electrolyte. Conventionally, Sb and Bi concentrations are controlled by maintaining a proper As/(Sb+Bi) molar ratio in the anode and arsenic concentration in the electrolyte. Antimony and bismuth are removed during electrolyte purification using liberators (electrowinning cells) and/or ion exchange. Liberators treat an electrolyte bleed stream from the ER circuit and electrodeposit increasingly impure copper as the copper concentration of the solution decreases. Traditionally, first stage liberators reduce the copper concentration from ~45 g/L to ~15 g/L and produce saleable copper. Second stage liberators decrease the copper concentration to ~8 g/L (Biswas & Davenport, 1980) which results in contaminated cathode that is returned to anode production (Biswas & Davenport, 1980; Wang, 2004). Further electrolyte purification is not always required but third stage liberators can be used to reduce copper concentration below 2 g/L which results in significant removal of As, Sb and Bi and very impure deposits which are recycled to a smelter or used for As production. However, liberators do not have very high energy efficiency (Acharya, 2014; Ando & Tsuchida, 1997) and below 0.5 g/L copper, highly toxic arsine gas may form (Biswas & Davenport, 1980).

A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

A scaffold was fixed in the furnace, and on it was placed a drawing- board, covered with paper, the top of which was made level at exactly the height at which the section was to he taken. (Fig. 8.) The centre of the furnace (which had previously been found, and marked on a plank across the top) was laid off on it by dropping a plumb-bob from above, and a strong needle was driven into the board in the centre. By means of a straight-edge and two plumb- bobs, the line passing through the centres of the front and back arches was also drawn on the board. This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

"SummaryDiesel-exhaust particles from two sources were dispersed in aqueous mixtures of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, and were tested for genotoxicity. Diesel samples from the same sources were extracted with dichloromethane and transferred into dimethyl sulfoxide and subjected to the same assays. Both types of extractions yielded similar results in both the Salmonella mutagenicity assay and the sister-chromatid exchange assay using V79 cells. After separation of the samples into supernatant and sediment fractions, the activity of both diesel samples was shown to reside exclusively in the supernatant fraction for the solvent-extracted samples, and exclusively in the sedimented fraction for surfactant dispersed samples. These findings indicate that genotoxic activity associated with diesel particles inhaled into the lung may be made bioavailable by virtue of the solubilization / dispersion properties of pulmonary surfactant components.While diesel engine emissions are associated primarily with transportation, they are also very common in the workplace. Estimates for the U.S. are that as many as 1.35 million workers in as many as 80 000 workplaces are exposed to the combustion products of diesel engines (NIOSH, 1988). These occupations include, but are not limited to mining, agriculture, motor vehicle maintenance, fork lift truck driving, truck driving, and tunnel and bridge operation."

Bentonite is a common name applied to a variety of clays that develope swelling properties when associated with water. Useful bentonite deposits occur in many Western and Southern states. Their origins may consist of the alteration of volcanic sediments or the decomposition of shallow lake deposits. The specific type of bentonite that will be discussed in this review will be only the Western or high swelling sodium type bentonite that is mined primarily in Wyoming. Wyoming bentonite first entered the market in the late 1880's when it was used as an oil absorbing cosmetic. In the 1920's it was discovered that superior binding properties were present which created new opportunities in pharmaceutical, animal feed, and steel foundries. The swelling properties that were exhibited by the high swelling Wyoming bentonites soon led to its use in oil exploration when the rotary drilling process developed a need for multipurpose fluids. Bentonites in general and Wyoming bentonite in particular have fascinated chemists and process development specialists since the 1920's. There exists a long list of industrial uses that has led to hundreds of patents and extensive literature reviews. The binding and swelling properties are developed as a result of large surface areas and high cation exchange properties. Water, being a di polar molecule, attaches to the ionic vacancies and forms a network of tightly held water particles which in turn produces an impermeable seal or a binding characteristic in unconsolidated powder. Newer uses for Wyoming bentonite that once again utilized the binding and swelling properties include the pelletizing of iron ore and a vast array of civil engineering applications including slurry trenching, lagoon sealing, and garbage landfill sealing.

Knowledge based applications are becoming important to Associated Manganese for efficiently dispatching ore of appropriate grades to customers on time. The G2 expert system shell has been used to develop blending and scheduling applications using a combination of object-oriented rule based, procedural, and heuristic approaches. The blending application, for example uses a heuristic approach for creating blends from thousands of small stacks of manganese ore of various grades and sizes, to meet customer specifications while fully exploiting the available inventory. Data capture and data warehousing have become important issues, and the Internet shows strong potential for distribution of pre-processed information.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.
