"Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

The concentrator of the White Bird mine, Canam Metals Corporation, is located in almost the geographical center of the present Picher mining cam' in the Tri-State district, one-half mile east of the town of Picher, 1 mile south of the Kansas State line, and about 18 miles west of the Missouri State line.

In this study, a combination of cathodic arc physical vapor deposition (PVD) and molten salt electrolysis methods were used to obtain ZrB2 layers on AISI 304 grade stainless steel surface. Prior to boriding, steel surface was coated with metallic zirconium via cathodic arc PVD method and then the zirconium coated steel was borided by molten salt electrolysis. Well adherent, dense, ZrB2 layers are formed on the substrates. The thickness of the ZrB2 layer showed dependence on the thickness of the metallic Zr coating layer and the time of boriding. During the boriding process the alloying elements of the substrate also took part in the coating structure depending on their diffusion characteristics.

Imposing a strong magnetic field is considered to be an attractive method to prepare materials with aligned or textured structures due to its intrinsic properties, e.g. non-contact and easily controllable. However, the nature of the strong magnetic field effect still remains unclear and further research is needed. In the present paper, the effect of a strong magnetic field on the solidification of a hypereutectic Al-Cu alloy was investigated. After magnetic field treatment, the primary phase was aligned parallel to the magnetic field direction. Meanwhile, the eutectic micro-structural constituent became elongated and thinner. A theoretical analysis was conducted to have a better understanding of the phenomena. During solidification, the magnetic Faraday and dipole-dipole interaction forces are considered to decrease the solute pile-up in front of the solid-liquid interface and modify the eutectic cell formation. The alignment of the phase is due to the shape magnetic anisotropy and crystal magnetic anisotropy.

The comminution circuit at Tarkwa Gold Mine was commissioned as a Single Stage SAG mill operated in closed circuit with hydrocyclones designed to process 4Mtpa. The circuit was later expanded by adding a secondary ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones with a view to treat 12Mtpa. The change in the circuit configuration and assigning the low aspect ratio SAG mill for primary grinding application makes the Tarkwa experience unique in terms the optimisation strategy and operating philosophy. This paper reports the findings from a series of surveys performed on this plant. The surveys reported include data obtained when the SAG mill was operated as a single stage mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones and also SABC mode under two different feed conditions. The differences in operating philosophy between the initial single stage SAG circuit and the current SAG/Ball mill circuit are discussed.

"Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

Mining tradition holds that a parallel round underground can not be any deeper than it’s smallest face dimension. ln other words, a mine using a 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’ (7.3 m) wide room and pillar mine, the deepest pull that can be achieved is plus or minus 12’ (3.7 m). After experience with decking of rounds in a 12’ (3.7 m) diameter shaft to achieve more than 12’ (3.7 m) advance per round, the concept of deepening the pull on horizontal parallel rounds seemed to be a feasible concept. Tests were conducted in a conventional room and pillar metal mine with a round size of 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’(7.3 m) wide. Standard rounds were drilled with a 16’ (4.9 m) steel as parallel rounds to an average depth of 14.5’ (4.4 m). The average depth of pull on these rounds was about 13’ (4.0 m). Using the available drilling equipment, 20’ (6.1 m) drill steel was used to drill holes to an average depth of 18’ (5.5 m). Five rounds were drilled and shot with a resulting aven$e pull of 16.2’ (4.9 m) or 90 % of drilled depth. Rounds were designed with decked bum cuts to maximize depth of pull in the cut area An innovative method of de&mining drilling accuraq was used to estimate it’s effect on depth of pull in the rounds. This method used a standard automatic 35-mm camera and scaling to determine the average drill deviation for many of the holes in the rounds.

The electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) production through electrodeposition from manganese nodules by reduction leaching in H2SO4 medium using sucrose as reductant followed by purification through 2-stage precipitation methods is described. The purified leach liquor was the starting solution for electrodeposition. Influence of in situ addition of a cationic surfactant Cetyltri-methylammonium bromide (CTAB) (0–500 mg dm −3) on the surface morphology and electrochemical properties of the EMD was examined. The XRD patterns of the deposited material were indexed to the c-MnO2 phase. FESEM results demonstrated that in the presence of CTAB uniform nanofibrous type grains were formed. Higher concentration of CTAB in the electrolytic bath however, drastically decreased the current efficiency (CE) and increased the energy consumption (EC) during electrodeposition. Under the optimum CTAB concentration of 100 mg dm −3 the obtained CE and EC values were 87.64% and 1.70 kWh/Kg respectively.

MANY investigations are reported in the literature on the age hardening of Al-Mg-Zn alloys but most of them are concerned mainly with mechanical property changes. The present investigation was started to determine the structural changes in an AlMgZn alloy. The alloy composition was chosen in the existing phase diagram" so as to lie on the quasi-binary section Al-(AlZn)Mg Actually, it was found that the diagram as published was inexact at the lower temperatures and that the phase in equilibrium with aluminum at the lower temperatures is not the ternary compound. Technique The alloy used for the investigation was prepared from high purity materials and the resulting composition as determined by chemical and spectro-graphic analysis was: Zn, 6.17 pct; Mg, 2.13 pct; CU, 0.03 pct; Si, 0.009 pct; Fe, 0.005 pct; and the remainder, aluminum. An ingot -in. thick was cast, homogenized, hot and cold-rolled to strip 0.064-in. thick for dilato-metric and powder work, and to foil 0.005-in. thick for single crystal work. Solution treatment temperature for all specimens was 475°±5°C for periods of at least 1 hr, either in air furnaces or lead baths. Aging was done in oil or Pb-Bi baths controlled to within ±3°C. The aging was investigated at the following temperatures: room (30°), 130°, ZOO0, 260°, and 300°C. For the dilatometric study, the length changes were measured continuously, at temperature, using strips of alloy 10 in. long, shaped as channels to eliminate undesirable deflection due to bending. To compensate for thermal expansion and contraction due to the variations in the temperature of the aging baths, the dilatometers were built of the same alloy as the one being tested, with the same shape and size, but with material fully annealed. Gages on which 0.0005 in. could be read and 0.0001 in. estimated were used to measure the dilation. Length changes were also measured at room temperature. Strips approximately 10 in. long were solution-treated, quenched, and measured in a supermicrome-ter in which 0.0001 in. could be read and 0.00001 in. estimated. The specimens were immediately aged for a given time, remeasured, and then the cycle was repeated, including the solution treatment. The error of measurement with this technique was somewhat larger, but the results confirmed those obtained by continuous measurements. The sheet used for the dilatometric work was checked to determine grain orientation. Both X-rays and etching methods revealed a rather coarse grain size but only a negligible amount of preferred orientation. Thus, volume changes calculated from length changes are not invalidated by preferential orientation effects. Pieces of the sheet used for the dilatometric work were also used for the metal -lographic work. Filings for the powder X-ray study were produced from a homogenized piece of sheet. These filings were magnetically purged of iron, screened to 200 mesh, sealed in a Pyrex tube containing an argon atmosphere, and solution-treated. When quenching, the glass tube was broken, so that the powder dropped directly into cold water. After drying with alcohol, the powder was sealed into capillary tubes containing an argon atmosphere and then aged for the required times. In spite of all these precautions the three strongest lines of a( Al2o) appeared in all patterns, and were used as internal standards. By the use of these standards, accurate corrections for film shrinkage were obtained. For the back reflection patterns, annealed nickel powder was mixed with the specimen to act as internal standard. An absolute calibration has been achieved for sampling and analyzing liquid steel for hydrogen based on Sieverts' values of hydrogen solubility in iron. Further checks were made in nickel, iron-nickel, and 18-8 stainless melts. The sampling method was successfully applied to a large number of commercial steel melts in various types of furnaces. The concurrent problem of sample storage was also solved. THE problem of sampling of liquid steel for hydrogen is more difficult than the problem of analysis. Hydrogen has a greater mobility than any other element; it is the only element that will diffuse out of steel at room temperature. In accordance with the known relation between temperature and diffusivity, the diffusion of hydrogen is extremely rapid at the temperature of liquid steel. Consequently, in the past, attempts to quench molten steel to retain the dissolved hydrogen have not been as successful as similar attempts with nitrogen or oxygen. The retention of hydrogen is especially difficult since it will continue to escape at room temperature even if the molten metal has been rapidly quenched. The hydrogen sampling methods may be classified broadly as (1) the rapid quenching techniques which attempt to preserve super saturation and (2) those methods which attempt to collect the gases evolved as the metal freezes and cools to room temperature. With all methods of sampling but especially with the rapid quenching methods, there is also a concurrent problem of storing the sample until analysis is undertaken. The two problems are interrelated and must be considered together when discussing liquid steel sampling techniques. The major obstacle in liquid steel sampling has been that there was no way of evaluating properly the various sampling and storage techniques which have been developed. It has not been possible to compare the accuracy of the various methods. For evaluation of sampling methods some known standard is required; this may be found in the published work on the equilibrium solubility of hydrogen in liquid iron which has been determined in three separate investigations.1,2,3 The data are shown in table I. Sieverts' original method of obtaining gas solubilities involved measurement of the volume of gas required to saturate the liquid metal contained in an evacuated bulb of known volume. This procedure, improved by introduction of high frequency induction heating, has yielded reproducible results which appear to be entirely dependable. Using Sieverts' method, it has been proved for iron and other metals and alloys that the hydrogen solubility is proportional to the square root of the pressure of the hydrogen gas above the liquid, so that one may work with various partial pressures of hydrogen to put different amounts of hydrogen in solution. From Sieverts' law it is possible to know accurately what amount of hydrogen is dissolved in the liquid metal at the time of sampling. The accuracy of a sampling method may be gauged by reference to this known solubility. It was the purpose of this investigation to develop a method for sampling liquid steel and for storing the sample so that the analytical result would represent the actual hydrogen content of the metal bath. In This Chapter [Methane ignition as initiation source for much larger secondary coal dust explosions Rock dusting requirements to prevent coal dust explosions Dangers of hybrid mixtures of methane and coal dust] Although methane explosions are dangerous, those that involve coal dust are even more so. If exploding methane disperses and ignites the coal dust that has accumulated on the mine ribs and floor, the burning coal dust immeasurably increases the strength of the explosion. Such methane-dust explosions are prevented by inerting the coal dust in a way that prevents the exploding methane from igniting it. This chapter discusses the dust hazard and how it is pre-vented in U.S. coal mines. METHANE IGNITION AS INITIATION SOURCE FOR MUCH LARGER SECONDARY COAL DUST EXPLOSIONS The typical scenario for coal mine explosions starts with the ignition of a flammable methane-air atmosphere near the face. The turbulent winds from the primary methane explosion then disperse the coal dust. If there is insufficient rock dust (usually limestone), a secondary coal dust explosion then propagates throughout large sections of the mine. These scenarios have been studied extensively at the Bruceton Experimental Mine (BEM) and the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) of the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. The minimum quantity of methane required to initiate a coal dust explosion was studied in 1930 in the BEM [Rice et al. 1933; Nagy 1981] and then later in the LLEM, whose cross-sectional area (130 ft2) is over twice that of the BEM [Sapko et al. 1987a]. Studies conducted in the BEM closely simulated conditions that existed in operating mines in the early 20th century. The later tests in the 20-ft-wide entries of the LLEM simulated the geometries of modern mines with advanced roof support technology. The data from the BEM tests show that 13 ft3 was the minimum quantity of methane at the face that, when ignited, would disperse and ignite coal dust. In the BEM, this amount of methane was mixed with air to form a total flammable volume of about 140 ft3 of a 9% methane-in-air mix-ture. In the wider entries of the LLEM, about 37 ft3 of methane was required to disperse pure coal dust and start a self-sustained coal dust explosion. This amount of methane was mixed with

Of the three projects, particularly the extensive Nimitz II (downtown) project, a single system, which was part of the operation, was used to control the spoil. Spoil control was continuous with the work since a vacuum truck and crew was used to suck up the spoils as they came out of the borehole. So, the whole job was kept clean both during operations and at the end of the shifts. On the Sand Island project, a double system was used. Larger spoil quantities were contained within the shaft limits during the work and the cleanup or disposal of the spoils was performed during excavation.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el proyecto de conversión a ciclo combinado que va desde el ciclo simple a ciclo combinado de la C.T. Kallpa. Este ciclo consiste en la coexistencia de dos ciclos termodinámicos (ciclos de producción de energía mediante vapor y gas) en un mismo sistema, de manera que el calor que genera uno, lo aprovecha el otro omo fuente térmica. Asimismo, la principal ventaja de utilizar el ciclo combinado es su alta eficiencia, ya que se obtienen rendimientos superiores al rendimiento obtenido operando en ciclo simple.

SnO2:F/CdS:In bilayers were produced by the spray pyrolysis technique on glass substrates. The structures were characterized by recording and investigating their transmittance curves, I-V plots, X-ray difractograms (XRD) and by observing their scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. From the I-V plots it was found that the SnO2:F forms an ohmic or quasi-ohmic contact with CdS:In. XRD patterns show the polycrystalline nature of the films and show that there is a small shift in the position of the (200) line of SnO2:F without the appearance of new peaks. The morphology of the structures are compared with those of SnO2:F alone and CdS:In alone on glass substrates.

Sin embargo, este mercado de concentrados de molibdeno se rige a especificaciones referidas a impurezas y leyes mínimas de Mo, que limitan su recuperación por la relación de esta variable con el grado de los concentrados. Por ello, el presente texto describe un programa elaborado por el Departamento de investigaciones metalúrgicas de CENTROMIN-PERÚ que incrementa las recuperaciones de Mo y la calidad de los concentrados con técnicas de concentración en combinación con métodos hidro y/o pirometalúrgicos.

Conventionally, cement deep mixing (CDM) columns are designed to have constant diameters over the improved depth as this facilitates the construction procedures. However, this design pattern may be inefficient in cases of spread footings or shallow foundations. This paper first briefly introduces principles of an improved CDM method that can create head-enlarged CDM (termed PF) columns. A simple analysis approach was introduced to obtain optimal shape of PF columns that results in minimum settlement. The effectiveness of this improved method over the conventional CDM method was then illustrated by settlement analysis for an actual footing in a case study using two recommended analytical methods in the literature. Analysis results from the case indicated that by using the same amount of soil-cement mixed volumes, settlement from a footing on PF columns can reduce up to 10 % compared with that from the same footing on CDM columns. In addition, a material quantity comparison for the case indicated that to have the same settlement values the volume of each PF column can be reduced of around 10% compared with that of the CDM column. INTRODUCTION The cement deep mixing (CDM) method is one of the most popular methods in ground improvement works. Details on the method such as construction procedures, necessary equipment and recommendations are described in many references or manuals (e.g. Bruce et al. 2013, BS EN 2015, Kitazume and Terashi 2013). Conventionally, CDM columns are designed to have constant diameters over the improved depth as this facilitates the construction procedures. However, this design pattern is found inefficient in cases of spread footings or shallow foundations as the upper soil layers are naturally weaker than the deeper ones but are subjected to larger amount of induced stress from the superstructures.

"Electrodeposition of CdTe was studied using aqueous ammonia-alkaline electrolytic baths in which Cd11-and Te1V-ions are dissolving as Cd11(NH3)/+ and Te1vol-ions, respectively. Ca-thodic polarization curves of the baths suggest the presence of strong interaction between the Cd11-and Te1V-ions; electrodeposition of tellurium is inhibited by the presence of Cd(NH3)/+ ions. The interaction makes it possible to electrodeposit CdTe films with stoichiometric composition. Polycrystalline CdTe thin film of about 1 µm thickness was electrodeposited at 343 K from ammonia-alkaline solutions (pH= 10.7) containing TeO32-(<20 mmol dm-3) and Cd(NH3)/+ ( < 60 mmol dm-3) ions. Increasing Cd(NH3)/42+/TeO32- mole ratio or decreasing total concentration of ammonia/ammonium-ion gave flat and smooth crystalline CdTe deposits at constant cathode potential-0.70 to -0.30 V vs SHE at 343 K.IntroductionCadmium telluride (CdTe) is well-known as a compound semiconductor whose band gap, i.e. 1.44 eV, is suitable for solar energy conversion with a photovoltaic cell. Various methods, such as CVD (chemical vapor deposition) and electrodeposition, of preparing CdTe thin films for solar cells have been investigated.Acidic sulfate solutions with a pH of 1-2 are usually employed for CdTe processing by electrodeposition.1-3) The electrodeposition of compound semiconductors is usually achieved (i) at a higher cathode potential than the redox potential of less-noble species, can in this case, and (ii) under the condition of diffusion-limiting current of a more noble species, Te1Y.4) There-fore, a suitable CdII/TeIV concentration ratio in the acidic electrolytic baths, resulting in the deposition of stoichiometric CdTe, is determined by the diffusion-limiting current density of TeIV- reduction, i.e. the concentration of HTeIVO2+ · Since the solubility ofTe1v species HTeIVO2+ in the acidic solutions is quite low, the rate at which CdTe is deposited from the acidic solutions is extremely slow."

"INTRODUCTION Discovery and development of a southwestern Arkansas quicksilver district are recent history. In July 1930 4/, a specimen was discovered near the Little Missouri River in sec. 1, T. 7S. R. 26 W., which was identified as cinnabar. In the summer of 1931, Leo Yount began prospecting for cinnabar near the Little Missouri River. In the fall of that year he operated a small three-tube retort near the present Parker Hill mines and produced several flasks of quicksilver. Yount optioned a considerable block of ground containing the best showings in the Little Missouri River area, and on February 19, 1932, he and W. C. McBride, Inc., of St. Louis, Mo., formed the Southwestern Quicksilver Co., which was the largest producer in the district until operations ceased in September 1934.The Southwestern Quicksilver Co. installed a rotary furnace on Parker Hill in April 1932, which treated ore from the three principal mines Gap Ridge, Parker Hill, and Parnell Hill. In 1934 production was entirely from the Gap Ridge and Parker Hill mines. Nothing was done at Parnell Hill except a little small-scale work on a share basis.Mercury Producers, Inc., later took an option on the holdings of the Southwestern Quicksilver Co. and in June 1935 began operations. A nitretação dos aços inoxidáveis tem sido objeto de diversos estudos nas últimas décadas. O objetivo primordial é promover o endurecimento superficial e com isso elevar a resistência ao desgaste, sem comprometer a resistência à corrosão. Em vista disto, a nitretação sob plasma a baixa temperatura, abaixo de 430oC, tem se mostrado um processo eficiente para inibir a precipitação de nitretos de cromo e promover o endurecimento superficial pela formação de fases expandidas pela supersaturação de nitrogênio. Este trabalho mostra a formação de ferrita expandida em um aço inoxidável ferrítico. Para isso foi utilizada o processo de nitretação sob Plasma-DC na temperatura de 400oC por 20 horas em mistura gasosa contendo 75%N2 e 25%H2. Os resultados de Difração de Raios-X mostraram que a nitretação em baixa temperatura é capaz de formar uma camada nitretada de ferrita expandida. Em Microscopia óptica observa-se uma camada homogênea com profundidade média de 32 microns de profundidade e dureza média de 1296 HV promovendo um endurecimento superficial do aço inoxidável ferrítico em mais de 5 vezes sem que ocorra a precipitação de nitretos de cromo e, com isso, preservado a resistência à corrosão.
