This paper introduces common detrimental consequences to the environment from mining in the Beijing West Mining Area. For example, ongoing mining operations can cause the following environmental deterioration: rock burst, roof rises, roof falls and inrush (Pit dash for ward water). Post-closure, after minerals resources are exhausted, the following environmental issues may remain: landslides (collapse, and mud-rock flow), dropping or exhausted water tables, water pollution, desertification and soil erosion, water accumulation, Slay endanger, ground subsidence, and causal factors in seismic activity. This paper analyzes this wide range of environmental consequences of mining, and offers a theoretical foundation to underpin a corresponding management scheme.

The mechanism of cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite was studied in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by AES and XPS, and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by micro-flotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

The application of this study is to use helical anchors as a foundation system for small wind tower (1 ? 10 kW) guyed cables. Helical anchors are currently used to anchor guyed cables of telecommunication and electric towers. However, the increased dynamic vibrations a wind turbine adds to the tower and foundation system under working loads, as well as extreme environmental conditions (e.g., straight line winds, ice load or sudden furling shocks), require additional knowledge about the behavior of helical anchors. These field conditions were simulated in this study by instrumenting a working tower with load cells and 3-axis accelerometers to gather data on wind speed and tower response. These tower responses were then transmitted to the helical anchors through an extensive, large-scale testing program that included monitoring the performance of the helical anchor foundation under dynamic loads, subject to natural variations in both wind regimes, precipitation (water level) and variations in helical anchor geometry. This paper specifically discusses the effects of helical anchor geometry on helical anchor performance under long-term dynamic loads.

As part of a joint U.S. Atomic Energy Commission-Federal Bureau of Mines program for using nuclear energy to supply process heat, a simulated nuclear loop has been constructed to test components. This loop has been operated for more than 1,800 hours at 100 p.s.i.g. Of this period, 23 hours were at 2,500° F. and higher; 540 at 2,000° to 2,500° F.; 840 at 1,500° to 2,000° F.; 200 at 1,000° to 1,500° F.; and 260 below 1,000° F. Leakage at flanges and welds was not a serious problem. A helium-recycle system with gas temperatures of 2,300° to 2,500° F. and a static pressure of 250 p.s.i.g. appears feasible. Difficulties were encountered with the recycle compressor due to thermal distortion of the impeller and shaft. The use of sealed bearings limits compressor operation to the life of the bearings.

A technique for fabricating free-standing, high-aspect-ratio porous and pillar-type Ni structures has been developed using wet Si processing. A wafer of (100) Si was initially etched in HF solution to form deep pores with micron-sized diameter. The aspect ratio can exceed 200. By introducing the as-etched Si into a defined aqueous Ni2+ solution, Ni deposits grew rapidly onto the sidewalls and replaced the Si. Long-time immersion allows the Si sidewalls to be completely converted and thus form a metallic Ni structure with high-aspect-ratio pores. It is known that close-packed submicron Si pillars can be formed by oxidizing and subsequent etching of the macropore sidewalls. Treated in the same Ni solution, high-aspect-ratio Ni pillars were correspondingly emerged by replicating the original pillar-type Si structure.

"Mine waste rock management involving waste rock movement and placement, is a critical aspect in the planning of open pit mining operations, as the waste rock haulage cost can be the largest portion of the mine operating cost. The concept of sustainable development in the mining industry also encourages environmentally friendly waste dumps that have zero hazards to people and the surrounding environment. Therefore, a detailed waste management schedule must satisfy economic and environmental considerations. However, the available tools in the market cannot provide optimal waste dumping schedules to meet all these constraints. This paper introduces a user-friendly and automatic tool to optimise the waste dumping schedule, which minimises the haulage cost, and covers the encapsulation of reactive materials to minimise acid mine drainage problems. This tool has been developed by using a new mixed integer programming (MIP) mathematical model that considers both single-lift and multilift dumping scenarios. The application of the proposed tool on a data set collected from a gold mine shows that the multilift dumping scenario has provided a more flexible and economical waste dumping schedule than the single-lift scenario, and both scenarios satisfy environmental requirements.Citation:Fu, Z, Topal, E and Erten, O, 2016. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying the time-dependent response of rock stressed along weakness planes. The objective is to improve mine safety by reducing the number of roof falls that cause injuries and fatalities to miners. Researchers conducted direct-shear tests on mud-stoneovercored from a coal mine roof. Results showed frictional strength weakens with displacement along the shearing planes. Results of direct-shear creep tests also showed time-dependent deformation. Test measurements were compared to classical analytical models. Results suggest that risk of roof collapse may be decreased through layout and support design to reduce creep rates and thus slow progression toward failure.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element (REE)-bearing phosphates and fluoro-carbonates was examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of REEs from various sources in the aqueous media.

Numerous voices are raising around the world to show how misleading and fuzzy commonly used risk assessments methods are. These criticisms come at a time when public trust in ?proponents of new projects?, operators, private or governmental, seems to have hit a low and the legal system ?targets? public officers. It is common that technical experts and the public strongly disagree in their analysis of risks. Risk definition requires the evaluation of probability and consequences and those words are oftentimes enough to stir great worry to the public. Thus it is nowadays commonly understood that ?reality? is not scientific, but resides in public opinion, hence urging technical people to communicate better, more transparently. Blatant failures on both counts have lead to the emergence of ?new myths? used to justify complacency using ?complexity? and other buzz words as an alibi. This paper (together with its companion presented elsewhere) explores how poor ?common practices? in Risk Assessment contribute to biasing project team, design teams opinions, skew decision-making process and finally misrepresent reality to the public resulting precisely in the raise of public distrust, legal implication witnessed around the world. The discussion first reviews the pitfalls of common approaches (FMEA, Probability Impact Graphs) pinpointing them as possible causes of future legal liabilities. An alarming disconnect also comes from various codes, ISO 31000 itself has this flaw, invoking the term ?acceptable?/?tolerable? without defining it or giving any guidance for its determination. Wide-spectrum public consultation could be developed to define a ?modern? social acceptability criteria helping all the stakeholders making/understanding decisions. Another alarming disconnect comes from the poor definition of consequences of mishaps and their societal ripple effects. This aspect is indeed mostly ignored in codes, leaving ample room to biases and censoring applied to potential losses. In our society no one seems to have anymore the possibility of hiding behind a shroud of ?carefully maintained? misrepresentation. It is time to act and ?write the book? for proper risk assessments avoiding misrepresentations.

In the summer of 1998, Ontario Hydro awarded a contract to demolish an obsolete and inefficient chimney by blasting. The Ontario Hydro Thunder Bay Thermal Generating Station (T.G.S.), is a fully operational hydro thermal generating station located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The Chimney was a 356 ft (108 m) high freestanding structure constructed of reinforced concrete with a brick liner. Falling the chimney required careful planning due to the highly sensitive structures and equipment which surrounded it. Damage either sustained to the existing systems through ground vibrations or direct contact would have resulted in expensive power outage and/or lost production. The role of Explotech Engineering Ltd. on this project was to provide and evaluation of the proposed demolition procedure, defme the predicted and maximum seismic vibrations at sensitive structures including underground services, conduct pre-blast / post-blast inspections and recommend various safety precautions. The general contractor for the project, LeBrun Northern Contracting Ltd., of Thunder Bay, Ontario was responsible for all site preparations and post-blast clean up. All demolition blasting calculations and operations were conducted by Dykon demolition experts from Tulsa, Oklahoma. On September 13, 1999, the chimney was successfully demolished. Extensive analysis of the vibration records and visual post-blast inspections of the surrounding structures concluded that the demolition event induced no damage to any of the Ontario Hydro facilities.

MONTANA Phosphate Produucts Co., a subsidiary of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., operates three properties near Garrison, Mont., known as the Anderson, Graveley, and Luke mines. All three are underground operations, mining the same narrow bed at points several miles apart. The Anderson, the oldest and largest of the three, has produced about 700,000 long tons since 1929. The Graveley has produced slightly over 100,000 long tons since 1940, and the Luke, acquired in 1943, is still in an early stage of development. The great bulk of the output has been shipped to the Trail, B. C., plant of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. for use in the manufacture of fertilizers. The phosphate seam is the basal member of the Permian Phosphoria formation. In all three mines it has a uniform thickness of 3 to 4 ft. of oulitic phosphate, with a few shaly partings. The overlying part of the formation comprises about 50 ft. of chert and the immediate footwall consists of a few feet of shale and sandstone. underlain by the Quadrant quartzite.

The Bureau of Mines demonstrated ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate on a continuous bench-scale basis. Leaching was performed at 95° C and with a contact time of 15 min. The ferric chloride leaching solution was continuously fed to a leaching tank at a constant rate for periods up to 45 h. In each test a constant redox potential was maintained in the slurry exiting the leaching tank by controlling the concentrate feed rate. In the 45-h test, lead extraction exceeded 99.5 pct, and the lead chloride produced was 99.97 pct pure.

Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

Mining deep orebodies is increasingly becoming the norm as the ‘easy’ orebodies are depleted. Deep ore mining requires significant ventilation and cooling infrastructure to not only meet regulatory requirements for air quality but also to achieve acceptable workplace temperatures with the higher strata rock temperatures and increased auto-compression. At the same time, advances in battery equipment technology are turning the possibility of a battery powered fleet into reality. The switch from a diesel fleet to a battery powered fleet offers several positive opportunities for the design and operation of a deep mine.The potential to reduce ventilation and cooling requirements due to battery powered equipment results in significant cost savings for mine development and infrastructure. Battery powered fleets are not subject to the same dilution requirements associated with diesel fleets thus allowing lower ventilation rates. At the low ventilation volumes possible with a battery powered fleet, surface refrigeration plants are limited with respect to the amount of cooling that can be delivered to the workface. Considerations for calculating the optimum air flow and cooling requirements are presented. Considerations for locating the refrigeration plant are also discussed. Production of metallic wires directly from liquid jets would avoid drawbacks of extrusion (space needed, damaging, cost?) and enable recycling. But liquid jets tend to break, due to capillary instabilities, unless a solid layer (coating or start of solidification) surrounds it. We recently developed a process to produce tin wires, cooled by water flow parallel to the jet. Superficial oxidization of tin produces a glass coating around the jet. Studies showed the length of wires increased when increasing speed of tin jets, and that water average speed should be the closest possible to the jet one to have smooth fibers. Producing 1 mm diameter wires is possible. The length of wires is limited by the experimental setup, which does not provide possibilities to coil the wire. Most of other metals do not generate glass-like oxides. The lack of coatings makes it necessary to reduce the capillary instabilities to obtain fibers.

To open the Fisher Hill mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, it was necessary to sink an inclined shaft into the rock and excavate stations, drifts, and ore pockets. This inclined shaft, or slope, q ft. 8 in. high by 28 ft. 2 in. wide, has compartments for two 5-ft. gauge ore-skip tracks of 120-lb. rail, one 5-ft. gauge man-skip track of 60-lb. rail, a concrete stairway, and service pipes consisting of a 12-in. compressed-air line, an 8-in. pump-discharge line, and a 4-in. water-supply line. When we were requested to investigate the work, the progress being made (by another organization) amounted to only 2 ½ ft. advance in 24 hr. We reported that progress of at least 6 ft. per day could be made. As a result, the Defense Plant Corporation, through the Republic Steel [ ] Corporation, entered into a contract with us to sink the shaft. The contract contained a penalty and bonus clause predicated upon an advance of 150 ft. per month. The average advance was 7.8 ft. per day; that in the best six-day week was 60 ft. and that in the best month, 215.5 ft. in 25 working days. The drilling was performed by 3 ½ -in. wet drifter drills mounted on five 8-ft. columns (see accompanying illustration). Even though a full-face drilling and mucking operation is customarily desirable, the steep slope, with the accumulation of water and fine debris at the face, made a modified heading and bench operation preferable. Os aços ligados ao níquel especificados pela norma ASTM A 522 são utilizados na fabricação de válvulas, flanges e conexões de tubos, na indústria automotiva, na construção civil e na área naval. Na indústria de petróleo e gás, o material requer desempenho adequado para resistir às altas pressões, ao ambiente corrosivo e à abrasão. Considerando os efeitos do desgaste nas válvulas e flanges, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da temperatura de revenimento na microestrutura e dureza do aço. Amostras submetidas à têmpera a 860°C e ao revenimento na faixa de 380 a 630°C proporcionaram resultados que mostram uma microestrutura predominante de bainita após têmpera e redução da dureza com o aumento da temperatura de revenimento devido ao alívio de tensão.
