Ten horizontal retort zinc blocks of a modified Hegeler design are in operation at Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, and produce approximately 170 t of spelter daily, or 62 000 t/year. A block consists of two furnaces of 448 retorts each, making 8960 retorts as the plant complement. Each furnace block is fired with natural gas and air maintaining the combustion mixture in the furnace always slightly reducing. No attempt to recover energy through waste heat boilers is made. The spelter moves to market by rail and truck either in palletized bundles weighing approximately 1060 kg, as loose slabs weighing 26.5 kg each, or as 1088 kg ingots. At present 46% of the metal is exported and 54% is consumed domestically in Mexico. The present day trend toward equalized or alloyed spelter, as well as special shaped castings results in sales of 35% of the entire plant's production. Sulfuric acid is also produced by the Contact Process using vanadium pentoxide as the catalyst. The plant is basically a Monsanto contact system, producing approximately 68 t of 100% sulfuric acid daily. Both 98.5% sulfuric acid and 20% oleum are available. All of the acid made is consumed in Mexico. Shipments are made in 26,900 dm3 tank cars.

The construction of the Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, the Beaux-Arts masterpiece, was completed in 1910. In financial ruin, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company sold the station in the 1960?s and the new Madison Square Garden and the Penn Plaza complex were constructed at the site. The demolition of Pennsylvania Station brought public awareness and outcry to protect historic structures and the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) was subsequently established in 1965. In the 1960?s relatively little engineering data was available on the performance of historic structures during adjacent construction and thus, no published criteria were established by the LPC on allowable movements and vibrations. During the late 1970?s a commercial tower was planned adjacent to the landmark Fraunces Tavern Block (FTB) in lower Manhattan. Through negotiations between the LPC and the developer, Dr. M. I. Esrig and the author were retained to monitor the historic block during foundation construction. The monitoring data and building performance compiled from the project formed the basis of the published 1981 ASCE technical paper by Esrig and Ciancia entitled ?The Avoidance of Damage to Historic Structures Resulting from Adjacent Construction?. Based on the ASCE paper, the NYC Department of Buildings adopted Technical Policy and Procedure Notice #10/88 entitled ?Procedures for the Avoidance of Damage to Historic Structures Resulting from Adjacent Construction When Subject to Controlled Inspection by Section 27-724 and for Any Existing Structure Designated by the Commissioner?, June 1988. This paper describes the author?s recent experience during the installation of deep foundations within, or adjacent to, three Manhattan landmark structures. Discussions are provided on the foundation construction, monitoring programs and performances of the three structures.

Coefficients of performance (C.P.D.) normally encountered are from 3.0 to 6.0, with capacities from 200,000 to 10 million Btu/hr.

New structural studies in the Walker Fault Zone of eastern Arnhem Land are integrated with basin-wide reconnaissance observations, made to refine models for the structural evolution of the McArthur Basin and provide new insights into the nature of metal logenetical ly important pre-inversion phases of the basin's evolution. At least five principal events may be identified during the Proterozoic: The Tawallah Group and equivalents were deposited throughout the McArthur Basin during an extensional event. Rifting of an incipient Batten Trough occurred at this time, in a terrain characterised by orthogonal, linked extensional faults. Uplift and erosion of the Tawallah Group accompanied continuing extension and was penecontemporaneous with continuing deposition of the overlying Parsons Range Group, within a precursor to the Walker Trough. Dt (of the Walker Fault Zone) relates to a new rifting event, penecontemporaneous with deposition of the McArthur Group and its equivalents in the Walker and Batten Troughs. This rifting accompanied dextral strike-slip faulting along northerly-trending bounding faults, as a result of northwesterly-directed oblique extension, leading to pull-apart basins. D2 inversion of the Batten and Walker Fault Zones pre-dates deposition of the Roper Group. In the proposed model WNW-ESE directed shortening (D2.), accompanied by folding and thrusting, and by local development of cleavage in the Walker Fault Zone, is seen to be followed by northerly-trending sinistral faulting (D2b), about a SE to ESE-directed compression. D3 is basin-wide and post-dates the Roper Group. It is characterised by conjugate faulting and folding about ENE to NE-directed compression. The latest Proterozoic event to be identified (D4) comprises widespread north-trending strike-slip dextral faulting of Roper Group, coupled with N-S directed thrusting across the Urapunga Fault Zone and Murphy Inlier This is accompanied by late dextral reactivation of NNW to NNE-trending faults in the Walker and Batten Fault Zones.

Investigation of an abandoned quarry near Rowland Flat in South Australia identified asbestiform antigorite as the fibrous serpentine mineral mined during the 1940s to 1978 for filler applications, not amphibole asbestos or chrysotile as reported in earlier investigations. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of individual fibres were used to confirm the identification. Chrysotile is widely regarded as the only asbestos mineral in the serpentine group. Further work was done therefore, on the geology and mineralogy of the occurrence, and the health implications were reviewed. A zone of antigorite alteration, with associated talc, is traceable for 750 m along strike of recrystallised dolomitic siltstone within Woolshed Flat Shale of Neoproterozoic age. The antigorite formed, in part, by replacement of prismatic crystals of probable tremolitic amphibole. The deposit is proximal to the Williamstown Fault and the serpentine-talc alteration is possibly due to fluids expelled along the fault during late-stage deformation in the Early Palaeozoic Delamerian Orogeny. The antigorite comprises white to pale green bundles of lath-shaped fibres that occur either as randomly- arranged equant patches after amphibole or as cross-fibre veins, both intimately mixed with calcite. Highly fibrous product was mined from the weathered zone where calcite was leached during weathering. Gentle grinding releases fibres with a high aspect ratio (>10:1) that show a wide range of fibre thickness, including a significant proportion of fibres <0.25 ¦m width. Toxicological studies on fibrous antigorite from Poland and Italy indicate that the carcinogenic potential of this form of serpentine is similar to amphibole asbestos. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques readily distinguish antigorite from chrysotile. Determination of asbestiform habit and confirmation of antigorite mineralogy is most reliably done using electron microscopy, preferably with SAED capability.

PRioR to the year 1902 electricity was used in the Butte district only for lighting, for the tramming of ores on the surface, and for the electrolytic refining of copper. In that year the Canyon Ferry hydro-electric plant on the Missouri river, with a transmission line to Butte and Anaconda, was completed, and enabled the mining operators to purchase electric current in large quantities at reasonable rates, and its application and use in the various mining operations and reduction works proceeded rapidly. The principal applications of electric current in metal mining may be listed as follows: Compressing air for hoisting. Compreeaing air for rock drills and pneumatic tools. Pumping. Ventilating. Lighting. Tramming. Compressing air for blast furnaces and converters Running shop and miscellaneous motors. Compressed Air for Hoisting. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. operates 22 mine shafts and plants at Butte. Of these, 15 are large plants and hoists, through which most of its ores are hoisted. In 1912 this company commenced using compressed air in place of steam, in operating a number of its large hoists, and at this date has 10 main hoisting engines and 10 auxiliary hoists driven by compressed air. The compressed air is furnished from a central plant containing six compressors, each having a capacity of 7,500 cu. ft. of free air per minute compressed to 90 lb. pressure in large receivers, and conducted by suitable pipe lines to the various hoists, the air being reheated before passing to the engines. Each of these compressors is driven by a 1,200-h.p. synchronous motor, directly attached to the drive shaft, and takes electric current at 2,200 volts. Seals are barriers constructed in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining panels or groups of panels from the active workings. Historically, mining regulations required seals to withstand a 140-kPa (20-psig) explosion pressure. However, the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (“MINER Act”) requires the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to increase this design standard by the end of 2007. This report provides a sound scientific and engineering justification to recommend a three-tiered explosion pressure design criterion for new seals in coal mines in response to the MINER Act. Much of the information contained in this report also applies to existing seals. Engineers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) examined seal design criteria and practices used in the United States, Europe, and Australia and then classified seals into their various applications. Next, the engineers considered various kinds of explosive atmospheres that can accumulate within sealed areas and used thermodynamic calculations and simple gas explosion models to estimate worst-case explosion pressures that could impact seals. Three design pressure-time curves were developed for the dynamic structural analysis of new seals under the conditions in which those seals may be used: unmonitored seals where there is a possibility of methane-air detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections behind the seal; unmonitored seals with little likelihood of detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections; and monitored seals where the amount of potentially explosive methane-air is strictly limited and controlled. Figure 1 is a simple flowchart that illustrates the key decisions in choosing between the monitored or unmonitored seal design approaches and the three design pressure-time curves. For the first condition, an unmonitored seal with an explosion run-up length of more than 50 m (165 ft), the possibility of detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections exists. The recommended design pressure-time curve rises to 4.4 MPa (640 psig) and then falls to the 800-kPa (120-psig) constant volume (CV) explosion overpressure. For unmonitored seals with an explosion run-up length of less than 50 m (165 ft), the possibility of detonation or high-pressure nonreactive shock waves and their reflections is less likely. A less severe design pressure-time curve that simply rises to the 800-kPa (120-psig) CV explosion overpressure may be employed. For monitored seals, engineers can use a 345-kPa (50-psig) design pressure-time curve if monitoring can ensure that (1) the maximum length of explosive mix behind a seal does not exceed 5 m (16 ft) and (2) the volume of explosive mix does not exceed 40% of the total sealed volume. Use of this 345-kPa (50-psig) design pressure-time curve requires monitoring and active management of the sealed area atmosphere. These design pressure-time curves apply to new seal design and construction.

Pure camsellite samples were prepared through crushing, sorting and grinding the high-grade iron-containing camsellite ores from Fengcheng, Liaoning, China. The flotation behaviour of camsellite was studied via a systematic investigation of camsellite flotation re-covery changes as a function of choices and dosages of collectors and depressants at different slurry pH. The results showed that at pH 8.5 to 9.5, the recovery of camsellite reached the maximum at 90%~93.5% using dodecylamine as the collector, while under the same condition a recovery of 84%~86% could be achieved with sodium oleate. The adsorption of dodecylamine was not affected by the addition of sodium hexametaphosphate, but the adsorption of sodium oleate could be significantly depressed. This implied that sodium metahexaphosphate could be used as an effective depressant for the other associated minerals during the dodecylamine flotation of camsellite. When starch was used as the depressant, the flotation of camsellite by sodium oleate was almost completely depressed in the alkaline conditions. Significant depressions were also observed when calcium chloride was added in the camsellite-sodium oleate system. The higher the slurry pH is, the stronger the depression. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the flotation was mainly initiated by the electrostatic adsorption of the collector on camsellite. X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analysis showed that the adsorption was originated from the electrostatic attraction between the N atom in dode-cylamine and B atom in camsellite. Dodecylamine had a higher coverage on the camsellite surface than sodium oleate.

JAMES P.. MUNROE.-The present situation is vastly different from the situation at the, time the paper was written. We now know pretty well what our problem with the disabled soldier is: 50,000 disabled men have come back and the Surgeon General tells us that probably 35,000 more are coming over in the months of March and April. So the total number of disabled men will be 85,000, which of course includes a great number of slightly disabled. If we followed the proportion that obtains in other countries, we would have about 10 per cent. of those people to be retrained under the Vocational Law. As a matter of fact, the general intelligence of our men is so much higher and the provision the government has made for the training off these disabled men is so much more liberal than with the other governments that we feel very certain indeed that instead of having 8500, men to be retrained there will probably be twelve and possibly fifteen thousand.

The characteristics of leaders under the duress of an emergency are important in the development of emergency planning, training, and in the management of an actual emergency. Knowledge of human behavior is an important component in the formation of emergency strategies. The U.S. Bureau of Mines analyzed the leadership behavior in three underground mine fire escapes. The subjects described their escapes during open-ended interviews. Data were coded according to: (1) evidence of leadership behavior, (2) evidence of lack of leadership behavior, and (3) characteristics of the individual in each group who led the subjects out of the mines. This paper discusses the profile of six individual leadership characteristics which emerged from the data.

"The Cityringen project in Copenhagen, Denmark will form a new circular line in the city center and will consist of 21 new stations (17 + four transfer stations) and approximately 31 km (19 miles) of earth pressure balance (EPB) twin-bored tunnels.The new tunnels passed under the historical building of Magasin du Nord, McDonald’s and two pubs in the heart of the city with a minimum cover of about 4 m (13 ft).To minimize the movements, a complex system of compensation grouting and jet grouting soil treatment was performed. A detailed action plan between the parties involved allowed coping with the critical tunnel boring machine’s (TBM) successful passage.The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line underground Copenhagen and will include the City Circle Line, 15 km (9.5 miles) of twin tunnels looping around the city. The City Circle Line will form a new circular track inside the city center and will intersect the existing M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg stations, as well as suburban train services at København H, Østerport and Nørrebro. It will extend the Metro network to the Nørrebro, Østerbro areas and the central station at København H (Fig.1). The two new lines M3 and M4 will run on the same tracks, but the M3 will be a circle route running around the entire line, whereas the M4 will drive from the station to the north side of the city.The €1.5 billion design-build contract was awarded by Metroselskabet in January 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture (JV) between the Italian companies Salini, Tecnimont Civil construction and Seli SpA. Since the bankruptcy of Seli SpA and Tecnimont, Salini Impregilo now owns 100 percent of the JV shares. Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, a subcontractor to CMT, was initially constituted as a Seli SpA subsidiary and, following the economic difficulties of Seli SpA, was acquired in 2015 by Salini Impregilo. Seli Denmark is in charge of the tunnels excavation and lining and owns the four 5.84-m (19-ft) diameter Seli/Kawasaki earth pressure balance machines."

Mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be a significant source of fine, respirable dust. About 25 percent of the mass fraction of tailings from a hard-rock mine consists of particles of a respirable size (smaller than 10 μm) [1]. This dust poses concerns, especially for nearby communities, because of its detrimental impact on respiratory health. Respirable tailings dust, primarily composed of quartz or free silica (SiO2), may cause silicosis, chronic pulmonary disease, bronchitis, collagen vascular diseases, and chronic granulomatous infections [2].

Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

It has been shown1 that in poly-crystalline strips of high purity aluminum with a fairly random orientation distribution, grain growth progresses gradually until the average grain diameter reaches a value approximately equal to the strip thickness. Recent work at this laboratory led to the realization that grain growth might be impeded to a considerable extent in the presence of a sharply defined texture, where orientation differences between neighboring grains are small. In order to investigate this effect the following experiment was carried out with the same lot of high purity aluminum previously used for grain growth studies in randomly oriented material.' Very large grain size was developed by grain growth at 650°C in specimens of 0.200 in. thickness. These specimens were then rolled to a thickness of 0.050 in. or 1.25 mm—a reduction of 75 pct. In the rolled strip each large grain corresponded to an elongated area easily identified by etching. After annealing for 1 to 25 min at 600°C and re-etching, these elongated areas were again recognizable. Within each area, corresponding to a single large grain before annealing, there formed by recrystallization a multitude of new grains with a fairly well developed preferred orientation. The orientation and the size of the new grains formed in areas corresponding to different large grains, varied widely depending on the orientation of the parent grains with respect to the rolling direction and the plane of rolling. Many areas were found where the average grain size was considerably smaller than the specimen thickness. Such an area occurred in a specimen cut in half before annealing. One half, containing a portion of the area in question, was annealed 1 min at 600°C, the other half, with the remaining portion of this area, for 25 min at the same tempera-Aluminum killed low carbon steel, § which is now used extensively for severe deep drawing or other difficult forming operations, is unusual in that its grain structure, after cold reduction and box annealing in accordance with conventional continuous sheet or strip mill practice, often is elongated, although at times it is equiaxed. Since this unusual structure has been found superior for many, but not all, severe forming operations, recrystallization of the steel, both at constant temperature and on continuous heating, was investigated and compared with that of rimmed steel in the hope that something might be learned about the mechanism of, and the factors controlling, the formation of such elongated grains. In this structure, the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise direction of the strip and transverse to this direction, even though nearly all of the extension in both hot and cold rolling is in the lengthwise direction. The grains are thus roughly pancake-shaped, being longer and wider than they are thick, as observed also by Burns and McCabe,1 and as illustrated by the typical structures shown in Fig 1. Fig la, representing a conventional longitudinal section, shows the length and thickness of the grains, whereas Fig Ib shows their length and width as seen by examining a section parallel to the sheet surface. Both illustrate the very irregular grain boundaries usually associated with the elongated grain shape. A finer equiaxed grain structure in this same grade is shown in Fig Ic. Either the elongated or the equiaxed structure may be present in the annealed product, and in rare instances the two types may coexist in a single specimen, as shown in Fig 1 d. Isothermal Recrystalliza-tion of Rimmed and Alamimum Killed Steel An aluminum killed steel known to have an elongated grain structure after conventional processing (Steel B, Table l), was selected for the initial recrystallization studies; for comparison, a rimmed steel, A in Table 1, was used. Samples of each in the form of hot rolled strip 0.075 and 0.095 in. thick, respectively, were cold rolled on a small laboratory mill in steps of about 0.010 in. per pass to obtain total reductions of 40 and 60 pct. Small pieces of the cold reduced strip were heated in lead at selected constant temperatures for one of several periods of time, then cooled in air. Rate of heating in the lead was, of course, very fast. Hardness of the cooled specimen was measured and a longitudinal section examined metallographically. Isothermal recrystallization curves for these two steels at 1050°F, based on hardness of the air cooled specimens, are shown in Fig 2 in which the amount of recrystallization corresponding to each plotted point is indicated. The marked difference in the behavior of these two types of steel is evident. After a corresponding amount of cold reduction, the rimmed steel recrys-tallizes in a much shorter time than the killed steel and the shape of its recrystallization curve, (plotted on a logarithmic time scale), is very different. The curve for rimmed steel indicates that recrystallization is analogous to isothermal transformation of aus-i.enite in that it proceeds at a progressively faster rate up to some 50 pct recrystallization, then at an increasingly slower rate. Heap biooxidation is an economical means to treat refractory sulfidic ores. However, air flow limitations are a major obstacle in commercialization of this technology. Geobiotics, Inc. has developed a new process for heap biooxidation of sulfide ores that renders the ore more susceptible to bacterial oxidation. In this process, air and liquid flows in the heap are greatly improved by first removing clays and other fine particles from the ore. Gold bearing sulfides are recovered from the removed fines and separately biooxidized. Column biooxidations were conducted on two refractory sulfidic ores from which the fines had been removed in order to improve air flow through the column. Gold recoveries increased from 46% to 90% for a mill grade ore and from 52% to 80% for a low grade ore after biooxidation. Fines and clays in these ores had precluded whole ore heap biooxidation from occurring. This new process addresses the most significant problem of large scale heap biooxidation.

This report sterns from a study undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the possibility of reducing filter-cake moisture by applying radiant heat. Suitable laboratory equipment was set up to study the effect of heat, heating time, proximity of the heater to the filter cake, cake thickness, and other variables related to the final filter-cake moisture. A minus-48-mesh coal slurry and application of heat for 60 seconds resulted in filter-cake moistures 5.6 to 13.2 percentage points lower than could be accomplished by filtration alone at 24 inches of Hg for 1-1/4-and 1 1/2-inch cake thickness, respectively. The moisture reduction can be attributed to the combined effect of lower fluid viscosity and evaporation.

THE mechanism of pressure sintering, or hot pressing, for ceramic materials, has been investigated by several researchers.1-8 Plastic flow has been suggested as the rate-determining mech-anism1,2 while grain boundary sliding3,4 and fragmentation processess have been found controlling in other studies. Vasilos and Spriggs5,6 have reported that pressure sintering occurs by a diffusion-controlled mechanism. For the pressure sintering of metals, investigations with lead7 and with tin6 have not identified the operative mechanism during consolidation of these powders. This note reports the results of a pressure sintering study initiated to determine the mechanism controlling the densification of spherical copper powder. Temperatures of 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600°C at 2500, 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures were investigated. The copper powder for this study was obtained from Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N.J. The minimum purity was reported to be 99.9 pct. The powder size was -325 mesh and a lineal analysis showed the average size to be less than 1 p. An alumina die body and punches were employed. Graphite spacers were placed between the copper powder and the punches before pressing. It was expected that the graphite would form carbon monoxide with any entrapped air and form a reducing atmosphere within the die cavity. This condition was generally realized during pressing although a minor amount of oxidation occurred at 500" and 600°C. The oxide particles were located randomly in the pressed samples and were not considered to influence the densification process. Calibration tests showed the temperature of the copper pellet to be about 20°C less than the die wall temperature, probably resulting from heat losses through the punches. This difference was compensated during the experimental pressing operations. The hot pressing equipment employed for this work has been described by Spriggs et a1.9 and was calibrated with a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton load cell. Travel of the punches was monitored with a dial indicator showing increments of travel to 0.0005 in. Relative density was calculated at selected time intervals for a known copper weight, punch travel, and die diameter. The accuracy of this calculation was *1 pct. Average grain size after hot pressing was obtained by lineal analysis. Typical densification curves are presented in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 where relative density is plotted vs log time as a function of applied pressure for the 300" and 600°C pressure sintering temperatures, respectively. The curves for 400" and 500°C were similar to those at 300°C and consequently are not shown. The curves at 300°C as well as 400" and 500°C do not show an end-point or limiting density for a particular applied pressure. At 600°C, a density in excess of 95 pct of theoretical has been reached such that further densification is extremely slow for the 5000, 7500, and 10,000 psi pressures. It is suggested that further densification at these pressure levels may be retarded or prevented by discontinuous grain growth, by entrapped gases, and by other microstructural limitations as described by Cob1e.10 The curve for 2500 psi hot pressing pressure is a straight line over the time interval although a slight change in slope may be occurring at the last time intervals. A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. "Koudiat Aïcha is a small Zn-Pb-Cu deposit, enclosed in the Visean Sarhlef volcano-sedimentary series of the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet massif. Base metal mineralization is located between a basal unit consisting of black argillite with arenite intercalations, and an upper unit composed of black argillite with locally fossiliferous calcareous units towards the top. Paraconcordant gabbro sills are present in both the upper and basal units, and the enclosing strata. Three successive phases of deformation linked to regional deformation overprint the volcano-sedimentary rocks and gabbros, as well as the sulfide mineralization.The mineral deposit includes several lenses of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite, 1 to 20 m thick, with a large halo of disseminated sulfide veinlets and sulfide nodules within a zone of intense chlorite alteration in the footwall. The ore mineralogy consists of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite with lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, pyrite, and stannite.Lead isotope results (206Pb/204Pb averaging 18.27) suggest that the metals of the Koudiat Aïcha deposit are derived from the volcano-sedimentary host rocks. Sulfur isotopes also indicate a volcano-sedimentary origin, with bacterial reduction of sulfate (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ to -10.5‰). The conditions for sulfide meta-morphic equilibration range from 250° to 330°C (sphalerite and chlorite geothermometers). The gabbroic sills could have been a local heat source for hydrothermal circulation. Based on these geological and mineralogical features, a Besshi-type model seems appropriate for the genesis of the Koudiat Aïcha mineralization.Koudiat Aïcha est un petit dépôt de Zn-Pb-Cu, encaissé dans la série volcano-sédimentaire Viséenne de Sarhlef dans le massif Hercynien de Jebilet au Maroc. La minéralisation en métaux usuels se situe entre une unité basale d’argilite noire interlitée d’arénite et une unité supérieure composée d’argilite noire comprenant localement des calcaires fossilifères près de son sommet. Des sills de gabbro paraconcordants sont présent à la fois dans les unités basale et supérieure, ainsi que dans les strates environnantes. Trois phases de déformation successives associées a la déformation régionale superposent leurs effets sur les roches volcano-sédimentaires, les gabbros, ainsi que la minéralisation sulfurée. Ce gîte comprend plusieurs lentilles de pyrrhotite massive a semimassive de 1 a 20 m d’épaisseur au sein d’un large halo de veinules de sulfures disséminés et en nodules au sein d’une zone intensément chloritisée dans le mur du gisement. Le minerai consiste en pyrrhotite massive à semimassive avec des quantités subordonnées de sphalérite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite, de galène, de pyrite, et de stannite. Les résultats de l’analyse des isotopes du plomb (206Pb/204Pb moyen de 18.27) suggèrent que les métaux du gîte Koudiat Aïcha proviennent des roches volcano-sédimentaires encaissantes. Les isotopes du souf¬fre indiquent eux-aussi une origine volcano-sédimentaire, impliquant la réduction bactérienne des sulfates (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ et -10.5‰). Hydrochloric acid is used as lixiviant in such hydrometallurgy processes as synthetic rutile production and nickel extraction. The intermediary metal chloride is normally roasted to release gaseous HCl and a solid metal oxide. A large amount of fuel is required for this thermal regeneration, mainly to vaporize the water content of the feed solution. To conserve fuel, some energy recovery from the off-gas is currently achieved, but the fuel costs can further be reduced by process optimization and energy recovery from the gaseous, aqueous and solid products of the regenerator. Here, first the existing limitations to fuel efficiency in the industrial scale HCl regeneration roasters are described. Then, for the case of a dilute feed solution, options for pre-evaporation and fuel minimization are modeled and compared. Finally, energy recovery technologies including heat pumps, acid heat exchangers and solid waste heat boilers are described, and their potentials as the heat source for pre-evaporation of the feed are evaluated.
