Fram a study of 63 systematic alloy modifications it was found that molybdenum, tungsten, and columbium, added individually or simultaneously, and increases in chromium cause major improvements in 1200°F rupture strengths of Cr-Ni-Co-Fe base alloys. Rupture strengths were a function of the effect of composition modifications on both the inherent creep resistance and the amount of deformation the alloy would tolerate before fracture. THIS paper describes the results of an investigation of a series of alloys with systematic variations of the chemical composition of the following basic alloy: C, 0.15: Mn, 1.7; Si, 0.5; Cr, 20.0; NI, 20.0: Co, 20.0: Mo, 3.0; W, 2.0; Cb, 1.0; N, 0.12; Fe, 32.0 pct. The 62 modifications of this alloy were produced under conditions which minimized all factors influencing properties at high temperatures except composition. Melting, fabrication, and heat treatment were carefully maintained constant. Stress-rupture properties at 1200°F were used as the primary criteria of evaluation of the alloy. The objective of the study was to obtain data for determining the fundamental role of the influence of alloying elements on properties of heat-resistant alloys at high temperatures. In addition the results should be useful in determining optimum chemical compositions, the sensitivity of properties to variations in composition, and the degree to which alloy content could be reduced while retaining worthwhile properties. It is difficult or impossible to develop correlations between properties at high temperatures and systematic variations in chemical composition from published data for wrought heat-resistant alloys developed for gas turbines.' ' The main reason for this is the extreme dependence of the properties on conditions of treatment of the alloys." In most cases variation in final treatments between alloys so influences the properties that the influence of chemical composition is obscured. In addition it is recognized Table I. The development of heat-resistant alloys has been based on the gradual accumulation of data roughly related to composition from extensive testing programs. There is every reason to believe that in most cases the optimum compositions have been achieved by this procedure in the alloys commercially available. There are, however, very little data showing the influence of systematic variations of composition free from the influence of other factors, particularly for alloys of the type investigated. Several investigators of cast alloys have demonstrated compositional effects, notably Grant,1-6 Epremian,t Guy,8 and Harder and Gow.9 Sykes10 eviewed the work on the wrought alloy Rex 78 and the systematic variations of carbon, copper, molybdenum, and cobalt leading to the development of the stronger Rex 337A alloy. From the papers by Wilson11 and Henry12 it is possible to deduce the beneficial effect of substituting cobalt for iron in 0.45 pct C-20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni-4 pct Mo-4 pct W- 4 pct Cb alloys. Wilson mentioned but did not present the extensive compositional studies involved in developing these alloys. The US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a process for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 ppm W (70 ppm W03). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by USBM chemists, 98% oft he tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92% of the tungsten was recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44% tungsten as tungsten trioxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process research unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal.

Develop rugged, cost-effective fire protection for hydraulic shovels and backhoes. Approach Automatic fire sensing and suppression systems were designed and built for use on hydraulic shovels and backhoes. How It Works A line-type temperature sensor is mounted in the machine's engine and hydraulic pump areas to detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and easy to control. Two systems were tested. In one, the inside of the sensor consists of two conductors separated by a ceramic material whose electrical resistance decreases with increases in temperature. When heated to a predetermined temperature) the control circuit responds to the resistance drop. In the second system, the detection element of the sensor is comprised of a thin metal tube containing a hydrogen charged metal hydride wire. The tube is sealed at one end and is connected to a sensitive pressure switch at the other end. When exposed to the heat from a fire, hydrogen gas released from the metal hydride wire actuates the pressure switch.

Room temperature infrared reflection spectra of 2 n-type homo-epitaxial epifilms have been measured in the work. The effect of the refractive index on the determination of layer thickness using traditional calculation measurement is studied and some improvements have been added to the measurement to improve the accuracy and stability of the measured results. Results of the improved method have great agreement with the results from SEM and both variance and mean relative error decrease an order of magnitude.

The liquidus surface of the C-Cr-Fe system to 1900°C has been mapped from carbon solubility and freezing point measurements, metallographic observations, and published data. In the graphite field, the surface drops precipitously to meet a slope descending from the Cr3C2-C join through the mixed carbide fields to a meandering eutectic valley; this flows from the Cr-C to the Fe-C edge. On the low-cavbon side of the valley, the surface rises to the chromium corner. 1 HE purpose of this inquiry was to gain a more complete knowledge of the C-Cr-Fe liquidus surface. This required an extensive study of carbon and chromium-rich alloys which, in the past, have received the least attention. Sanbongi el al.1 measured the solubility of carbon in liquid alloys containing up to 25 wt pct Cr at temperatures of 1460" and 1545°C and found that it increased with chromium content and temperature. Lucas and wentrup2 also made solubility experiments in graphite crucibles, but at higher chromium contents in the range of 38 to 80 pct and at temperatures of 1550" to 1700°C; however, their experiments were relatively few, and the effect of temperature was not consistent. The present investigation included compsitions ranging from 0 to 94 pct Cr and 1.4 to 11.7 pct C at temperatures up to 1800°C. Saturation experiments in graphite crucibles, thermal analyses during freezing, and metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies were employed to obtain desired information which, together with published data from other investigations about the binary edges and the ternary system at lower carbon levels, made possible the construction of a comprehensive C-Cr-Fe liquidus surface. C-CR-FE LIQUIDUS SURFACE The derived ternary liquidus surface is shown in Fig. 1 where the solid curves are liquidus isotherms. The dashed curves and the binary edges are the liquidus field boundaries of the primary crystals, the arrows along these boundaries indicating their direction with decreasing temperature. Each intersection of three internal boundaries is the composition of liquid involved in four-phase isothermal equilibrium with the three primary crystals whose liquidus fields touch there. It may be observed that a total of six four-phase equilibria occur at melt temperatures. The general topography of the liquidus surface consists of a eutectic valley sloping down from the Cr-C edge at 3.2 pct C to the Fe-C edge at 4.25 pct C. The liquidus surface rises in two directions from the valley, one hillside terminating at the Cr-Fe edge while the opposing hillside rises toward the carbon corner out beyond the top edge of Fig. 1. Both hillsides are interrupted by intersections of surfaces or joints representing the liquid colmpositions of various three-phase equilibria. Seven primary crystals occur, namely a(bcc), ?(fcc), graphite, (Fe, Cr)3C capable of dissolving as much as 15 pct Cr, and three different chromium carbides in which iron is partially soluble by substitution for chromium. In 1995 Standards Australia International Limited æSAIÆ published a risk management standard titled AS/NZS 4360 Risk Management. It was the first such standard published by a recognised formal standards body anywhere in the world and it put Australia at the leading edge of the risk management discipline. Many Australian and international organisations have utilised the risk management standard and it is one of SAIÆs most important and popular standards. Since its publication in 1995, the risk management standard has gone through a major revision in 1999 and is currently undergoing another such review, which is due for completion in 2004. This paper will chart the application of the standard within certain key organisations since its inception in 1995. A brief overview of the methodology behind AS/NZS 4360 will be presented as well as an overview of supporting and related standards. It is prudent to base risk management and other management system issues on existing and tested standards rather than creating new proprietary approaches. Examples of areas in which the risk management standard might be applied in the mining industry are given, subject to the specific operations of each company: technical, commercial, environmental, informational, and safety and regulatory.

"The recent combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) can provide considerable insight into the performance of flotation cells. One area of interest from a fundamental equipment design perspective has been the influence of flotation cell size and the inflow rate on the metallurgical performance of the cell. One of the specific design objectives when increasing the size of flotation cells, or increasing the feed flow to the flotation cell, is to ensure that the feed stream flowing into the cell does not have an opportunity to bypass the mechanism.This paper describes the initial modeling efforts to quantify the inter-relationship of cell size, inflow rates, and feed and discharge box placement, on the retention time distribution of solids in the flotation cell, and the fraction of particles that bypass the mechanism on a size by size basis.INTRODUCTIONThe great majority of newly installed cells in mineral processing plants world-wide are of the cylindrical tank design and this tank shape offers a number of hydraulic advantages over the older style of square cells. Cylindrical cells give symmetrical flow patterns and by careful design of the mechanism and tank internals, the flow patterns generated can concentrate the more intense mixing in the lower portion of the cell to promote good solids suspension and particlebubble contact. Simultaneously, cylindrical tank design gives a more quiescent upper zone for particle-bubble transport into the froth zone. These symmetrical flow patterns are naturally disturbed in normal operation by the slurry inflow and outflow from the individual cells. The challenge for flotation cell designers is to determine the magnitude of these flow disturbances, and to assess whether or when the inflow and outflow rates have a sufficient impact on the hydraulic flow patterns so as to potentially affect the metallurgical performance of the flotation cell."

In view of the current interest in magnetic materials having rectangular hysteresis loops, as for example those obtained with the grain oriented 50 nickel 50 iron alloys,t we wish to call attention again to the results obtainable with the perminvar (Co-Ni-Fe) alloys heat treated in a magnetic field. Data taken from direct current measurements made prior to and during World War II give the typical values shown below for two of the perrninvar alloys. Fig 1 and 2 show- the hysteresis loops for these samples. The first sample above consisted of small rings punched from 0.014 in. sheet stock. These rings were heat treated at 1000°C for one hour in a hydrogen atmosphere and then cooled with the furnace to 750°C at which point they were subjected to a magnetic field of 15 oersteds maintained during cooling to room telmperature. The molybdenum perminvar sample consisted of a spirally wound core of 0.001 in. tape. The heat treatment was the same except that box annealing methods were used and no hydrogen atmosphere was employed. Even better properties might be expected using hydrogen. The heat treating temperatures and cooling rates are not critical. Rectangular hysteresis loops produced in other perminvar alloys by heat treatment in a magnetic field were described earlier.',? Properties similar to those described above are realized in perminvars manufactured by conventional methods. Drastic cold working which in practice limits the final thickness and is gen- erally expensive may thus be avoided. This information may be of interest to those concerned with magnetic alloys and the development of contact rectifiers, magnetic amplifiers and so on.

THE 135th meeting of the Institute was the largest and most enthusiastic that has ever been held, sur-passing passing in numbers attending even the notable meeting of 1920. The total registration was 1493. The technical sessions and round tables, 38 in number, were spread through four instead of three days as heretofore in order to reduce the number of conflicts, and most of the A. S. T. M. Committee meetings were held over until Friday. Even so it was necessary to schedule as many as seven simultaneous technical sessions, and there were usually at least two going at once that each wished to attend. Three special luncheons and five group dinners were held, each of which strung out into an informal meeting, and yet approximately 500 came to-gether each day at the general luncheon and over 700 attended the banquet on Wednesday night. The smok-er attracted 402, and the various social affairs under the charge of the general or the women's committees were all crowded. From 10.00 a.m. Monday to 11.00 p.m. Thursday there was one long series of meetings after which the members went home to catch up on their sleep. The comment on the meeting of a member of one of the other societies, who had occasion to be much in the building, was the markedly friendly spirit of the gathering, the large numbers who were evidently old friends and acquaintances. This does seem to set the miners off somewhat from other engineering groups. So many have shared the same blankets and beans at one time or another that the annual meeting has truly come to be a family reunion.

The wastewater-treatment system of the Anaconda Mining Co., at its Butte, MT., operation has been physically and chemically characterize modeled on a computer and investigated with respect to alternate systems for economic heavy metal recovery. The system involves lime addition to a mixture of acid underground copper sulfide mine water, acid effluent water from the iron induced precipitation of copper from acid leach solution and basic suspensions of solid effluent from a concentrator plant. Experimental chemical analysis and predictive computer calculations shows that the monosulfllte and disulfllte complexes of transition metals (Iron II being dominant) and alkaline earths are 40% of the total dissolved metal load of both acid streams. The suspended solids (30% by weight) in the basic concentrator slurries are dominated by quartz and pyrite and also contain kaolinite muscovite, biotite and undissolved lime. The mixture of these three streams result's in major reductions in concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Sir and Zn, and a pH >7 with calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate being the major dissolved ions. The treatment system has been simulated in the laboratory and accurately modeled on a computer. The computer program, an altered REDEQL-EPAK, is capable of accurately predicting the amount of lime required to reach a desired effluent water. Preliminary research has indicated the usefulness of electroprecipitation as a means of recovering the valuable metal load and providing an EPA acceptable effluent.

"The failure that was utilized for developing this model was a double bench-scale failure, approximately 20 m in height, in the Misery pit at BHP Billiton’s EKATI mine site. The bench that failed was excavated in biotite schist. Due to previous problems with bench-scale toppling failures, this bench was excavated with a 70° inclined, 30 m deep preshear. Upon exposure, the wall was very clean with half-barrels commonly observed from the pre-shear operation.In August 2003, a bench failure of about 1000 t occurred in this pre-sheared biotite schist (Fig. 1). Upon examination it was noted that the foliation that paralleled and dipped at 70° into the face when excavated was approximately horizontal at the top of the failure (Fig. 2). While the failure mode itself appears complex, the failure was apparently driven by three factors:• a low-angle, low-frictional strength fault or discontinuity at the base of the failure area;• water either contributed meteorically from precipitation and/or from permafrost melt; and• foliation planes providing a viable toppling geometry once toe block motion began to occur.The above details are illustrated in Figure 3.After considerable thought and analysis, a model was postulated for the failure.It is thought that the entire failure had been triggered by displacement of a toe block (Fig. 4). This toe block is bounded on the back by foliation, the bottom by a low-angle, lowstrength fault, and the front by the bench face. Water pressures behind the bench face developed forces on the block as can be seen in Figure 5. These forces were sufficient to induce block motion. As can be seen in the relative shear strength diagram in Figure 6, only a small amount of water is necessary in the face to initiate block displacement. Note that in this figure, a simplistic piezometric pressure distribution was assumed."

Acid mine drainage is a major environmental problem worldwide. A key to remediating this problem is understanding the rate and mechanisms of the complex, multistep pyrite oxidation reaction under geologically relevant conditions. Because many waste piles are not submerged, a large amount of pyrite oxidation actually occurs in air. We have designed a Barcroft-manometer reactor to measure the rate of pyrite oxidation in air as a function of relative humidity and oxygen partial pressure. The reactor consists of two chambers joined by a manometer. Each experiment occurs at constant temperature, initial oxygen partial pressure, and relative humidity, although these variable can be changed between runs. Oxygen consumption was measured and pyrite oxidation rates were calculated from those data. Initial data indicate that rate of pyrite oxidation by oxygen in humid air is much faster than the rate of oxidation by oxygen in solution. The rates determined by this study can be used to develop better remediation techniques for acidic mine waters.

Posteriormente están las secciones de recepción, trituración y muestreo del laboratorio, las cuales se componen del departamento de trituración, departamento de muestreo y departamento de archivo, respectivamente. Finalmente, este equipo de laboratorio, cuenta con un laboratorio de Microscopia, de preparación de muestras para el examen microscópico yde ensayos especiales, que en conjunto permiten un mejor tratamiento y descripción sobre los minerales a investigar."

"Nitrogen rich Ti-N inclusions are one of the more difficult inclusions to remove during liquid metal refining of titanium. If present in the final component, they can significantly decrease the mechanical performance of titanium and its alloys in applications involving cyclic loading. Understanding the kinetics of dissolution of Ti-N particles during consolidation/melting of titanium can help us better operate and design the melting processes to minimize their occurrence in Premium Quality Titanium production. A numerical model based on finite difference method has been developed to calculate the dissolution of a spherical Ti-N particles in molten titanium. Analytical solutions were used to verify the finite difference code for calculation of concentration profile and the dissolution of spherical solids. Taking into account the limitations in these approaches for the different cases examined, the invariant field approximation showed good agreement with the results from the numerical analysis. Evolution of the size of a spherical Ti-N particle during dissolution was predicted by the numerical model and the particle dissolves in 163 s.INTRODUCTION Properties like low density, high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance make titanium attractive for a variety of applications. Key characteristics in the processing of titanium and its alloys include its high sensitivity to impurities, especially atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen and its high reactivity in the molten state. Nitrogen rich inclusions Ti-N, also known as Type ? or hard alpha defects, usually have substantially higher hardness and lower ductility than the surrounding material. Because they can act as fatigue initiation sites, Ti-N inclusions can significantly decrease the mechanical performance of titanium and its alloys in applications involving cyclic loading, even in minor amounts (tenth of a percent) (Lampman, 1990; Moiseyev, 2005; Lütjering & Williams, 2007). Ti-N encompasses as a broad range of nitrogen contents from a few wt% up to stoichiometric TiN. The liquidus temperature of Ti-N titanium increases substantially with increasing nitrogen content. Consequently, depending on the concentration of nitrogen, the melting point of Ti-N inclusions can be above bulk liquid metal temperatures during melt processing. Thus, removal of Ti-N defects hinges on dissolution and not melting."

The Canadian magnesite deposits are situated in Grenville township, about 8 miles from Calumet station, on the Canadian Pacific Railway, but the poor transportation facilities have hindered their development. Magnesite was discovered in the boulders near White Rock Lake by Rev. W. P. Boshart in 1900. Observing that the material of these boulders was more glistening and whiter in color than Grenville limestone, he sent a specimen to the Department of Mines, Ottawa. An analysis showed this to be almost pure carbonate of magnesia and of commercial value if present in sufficient quantities. That summer, Boshart and McAllister found numerous outcrops, both of boulders and of bed rock, that gave promise of being magnesite of a commercial grade, and decided that this mineral deposit, if developed, would rival that at Veitsch, Austria. So they procured options on most of the land on which they knew the magnesite occurred. But the transportation difficulties were too great for the deposits to be mined at the prices offered for the product. In 1907, T. J. Waters organized the Canadian Magnesite Co. and opened a quarry on the north half of lot 18, range IX, and later on lot 15, range IX, of the same township. A lirnestone kiln was erected and the calcined rock was hauled to Calumet. In 1914, the North American Magensite Co, took over the quarries and shipped both crude and calcined magnesite until January, 1923. During 1915, S. Melkman organized the Scottish Canadian Magnesite Co. and opened a quarry on lot 15, ranges X and XI, Grenville township. A light, narrow-gage railway connects this quarry with the C. P. R. at Magnesite station. but shipments are made only during the summer months. An analysis showed this to be almost pure carbonate of magnesia and of commercial value if present in sufficient quantities. That summer, Boshart and McAllister found numerous outcrops, both of boulders and of bed rock, that gave promise of being magnesite of a commercial grade, and decided that this mineral deposit, if developed, would rival that at Veitsch, Austria. So they procured options on most of the land on which they knew the magnesite occurred. But the transportation difficulties were too great for the deposits to be mined at the prices offered for the product. In 1907, T. J. Waters organized the Canadian Magnesite Co. and opened a quarry on the north half of lot 18, range IX, and later on lot 15, range IX, of the same township. A lirnestone kiln was erected and the calcined rock was hauled to Calumet. In 1914, the North American Magensite Co, took over the quarries and shipped both crude and calcined magnesite until January, 1923. During 1915, S. Melkman organized the Scottish Canadian Magnesite Co. and opened a quarry on lot 15, ranges X and XI, Grenville township. A light, narrow-gage railway connects this quarry with the C. P. R. at Magnesite station. but shipments are made only during the summer months. DURING September, the Coal Commission pre- pared for issue a series of 18 reports on varied aspects of- the bituminous coal industry; the final report, dated Sept. 22, sums up the facts and offers recommendations addressed to Congress, to the industry, and to the public. The few following paragraphs are selected: Bituminous coal is the real foundation of that great industrial and transportation structure which enables more than a hundred million people to live in America and be so well supplied with things necessary for their health, comfort; and convenience; it also furnishes domestic fuel for two-thirds of the homes of the land. The distribution of the output of the bituminous mines tells the story: 28 per cent. goes to the railroads, 25 per cent. to the boiler houses of factories and mills of all kinds, 15 per cent. to the coke ovens and gas plants, 10 per cent, to the homes, 7 per cent. to steel plants and the same percentage to power plants and street railways, 4 per cent. is exported, 2 per cent is used for power at the coal mines, and the remaining 2 per cent. goes to the seaboard for steamship fuel. Bituminous coal enters into interstate commerce on a scale approached by no other commodity; less than a fourth of the coal mined in the United States fails to enter interstate com-merce. All but one of the 45 coal producing districts in the United States ship coal outside the State in which it is mined. Three hundred miles of cars loaded with coal is the daily output of the bituminous mines of the United States. The public-welfare element in coal is seen in the dependence of public health and safety on an unfailing supply of fuel, in the close connection between the prosperity of most industries and the uninterrupted operation of the coal mines, and in the obvious fact that without coal the great network of railroads which binds together this great country would be idle. The railroads and the public utilities, themselves so clearly obligated to render what-ever public service is demanded of them that the constitutionality of their public regulation is unquestioned, are of all industries most dependent upon coal. Thus, coal makes up over 35 per cent. of the operating cost at the gas plant and over 25 per cent. at the electric power station, and in the operating expenses of. a railroad the cost of coal is the largest single item, next to labor. The practical logic that half a century ago clothed with a public interest the steam locomotive and in later years the electric-power station must recognize a large element of public service in the coal mine that furnishes the necessary energy to both locomotive and power-plant.
