In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied 29,020 acres of the 43,165-acre Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area (MT-024-684) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. Within this report, these 29,020 acres are referred to as the study area. Located in Custer and Prairie Counties, MT, the study area is about 2 miles northwest of Terry. The study area is underlain by essentially flat-lying units of the Fort Union Formation of Paleocene age with some Quaternary alluvial deposits in stream valleys. No mines or prospects were found in the study area. Bentonitic clays and lignite coal units were examined and sampled; however, no clay resources or coal reserves were identified. Estimates of coal resources will be reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in a joint U.S. Geological Survey-U.S. Bureau of Mines publication. Gravel along the Yellowstone River, a source of agate for private collectors, could also be used as sand and gravel aggregate although material on the south bank of the river is closer to population centers and road systems. Clinker found in the study area could be a source of road metal, but is not well situated in relationship to areas of use. No geothermal resources have been identified although water suitable for direct heat applications may underlie the study area. All the area is leased for oil and gas exploration.

This paper will review the state of the global vanadium industry and outline the implications for the market in the coming years. Global vanadium resources and reserves will be defined. Current production of vanadium will be quantified and examined in terms of production by country, sources of raw materials for production and cost implications of the production processes. Current consumption of vanadium by country and by application will be reviewed. Vanadium supply/demand balance in recent years and the resulting impact on global inventory levels will be discussed. Projections for changes in global production, consumption and resulting inventory changes for the vanadium market in the coming years will be made.

Computer process analysis and control techniques are overcoming major hurdles to acceptance in the mineral industry. With the growing list of new advances characteristic of a rapidly maturing discipline, management of the companies on the leading edge are keenly aware of the advantages of using computer methods in process applications. Significant advancement is already evident in such technical areas as operations research, mathematical modeling, statistical methods, and computer-based procedural techniques. The early advances during the past decade are already documented in prior symposium proceedings of this series. Thus, the currently active areas of the advancing technology are emphasized here. This section deals with applications in pyrometallurgical and kiln processes. The two sections which follow deal with concentrating operations from two points of view: 1) mathematical modeling, and 2) on-line control. In the metallurgical field, emphasis on developing effective process computer applications for the steel industry began in the late 1950's. Simulation techniques also received substantial attention. The steel industry was soon joined by the cement industry in the development of computer methods for process applications. Computers were in use for feed-material blending and kiln control in the early 1960's. Computer development in other pyro processes, such as aluminum reduction and glass-making, also marked significant advances by the mid 1960's. Aluminum smelter potline control is a nearly universal application at this point, and the development of glass furnace computer process control represented a recent important technical advance in digital control techniques. Steel Hot strip rolling was the earliest significant process computer application in the metallurgical industry. Computer control of rolling mill operations is now a steel mill standard component, particularly in plants newly placed into production. 1, 2 Initial computer installations principally carried out procedural routines in setting mill clearances for production lot control. Recent developments are leading toward feedback control based on mathematical model techniques. 3

Blasting trials using Daveytronic Electronic Delay Detonator systems (EDD’s) were conducted at the Alpha Ferro Quany (Pretoria) and the Eikeboom Colliery near Witbank in November 1999. The objectives of the trials were to determine the influence of accurate hole firing on rock fragmentation, blast-induced vibration and blast throw. This paper provides an outline of the trials and an analysis of the results. The results were compared with a normal shock tube initiation system. Fragmentation was measured using video-imaging techniques at the hard rock Ferro Quarry for one conventional shock tube blast and two EDD blasts. No significant difference was measured in the fragmentation between the shock tube blast and the two electronic detonator blasts. Joint planes mostly defme the fragments at Ferro Quarry. The fragment sizing was therefore controlled mainly by the rock structure and the blast timing appeared to have no influence. Vibration measurements made at Ferro Quarry indicate that electronic detonators have a marked effect on vibration frequencies compared to shock tube systems. The more accurate detonators resulted in a narrower f+equency band at lower amplitude with similar timing. By modifying the blast timing, the dominant frequencies were changed. The electronic detonators had a significant positive influence, therefore on blast vibration and its control. The timing scatter measured from the shock tube blast was considerable, with measured inhole detonator scatter at 48 ms over a sample of 19 units. Surface delay periods less than 42 ms would therefore not be able to provide effective sequential firing. The scatter of the Daveytronic units was below the 2 ms resolution of the high-speed camera used to film the blasts. Reliable sequential firing, even at very short delay intervals was considered the main reason for notable improved throw in an overburden blast at Eikeboom Colliery. Blast throw was improved by 25% for the test blast.

A novel ilmenite collector, tert-butyl benzoic hydroxamic acid (TBHA), was investigated in this paper. The flotation performance and adsorption mechanism of TBHA to ilmenite were evaluated through pure mineral flotation tests, ?-potential measurement and IR spectrum analysis. The experiment results indicated that TBHA exhibited strong collecting capability to ilmenite under pH 6.0-8.5. At pH 7.0-10.0, TBHA existed in the form of anionic species in aqueous solution, and the ?-potential measurement results showed the surface of ilmenite maintained negative and more negative after the adsorption TBHA on it, which inferred that TBHA might adsorb on the surface of ilmenite through chemical interaction. The IR spectrum analysis further confirmed the chemical interaction between TBHA and ilmenite surface. When I presented at the Chicago Meeting of the Institute, in May, 1884, a paper on Hadfield's manganese steel,* which had about that time been brought to the notice of steel manufacturers, I promised to furnish some physical tests of the steel for publication in the Transactions. The fulfilment of the promise then made has been delayed by various circumstances; but I have recently been put in possession of tests of this steel carefully made at the Woolwich, England, arsenal. Messrs. Hadfield & Co. prepared for the arsenal a series of twelve test-pieces, made from the same heat. The purpose of this report is to chronicle the interaction between Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock during the development and application of Long Hole drilling as a viable, practical method of narrow reef mining. Appendix I identifies the people from Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock who participated in the project. Experiments in long hole drilling and blasting were conducted in a number of mines during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of the advantages envisaged were: ? The face would require no daily examination ? No barring down or immediate face support required ? No sockets to clean ? Only a few well drilled holes rather than large numbers of short blast holes ? Avoidance of poorly-marked holes, inaccurate drilling and improper charging ? Better supervision and better face advance. Holes 50 mm in diameter were drilled parallel to the stope face by pneumatic rock drills from advance strike gullies. Holes were charged with amon gelignite cartridges. All holes were traced with detonating cord to ensure propagation of the explosive along the entire hole length. Rock was blasted onto a rolling scatter pile. A number of reasons have been cited for the failure of this mining method. The two most important were: ? problems in controlling hole deviation which was exacerbated by the fractured ground ? difficulty of charging up holes in fractured ground, due to relative movement of rocks along fracture surfaces over the hole length. The idea of drilling a few long holes parallel to the face rather than a large number of short blast holes perpendicular to the face was an attractive option to mechanize narrow reef mining. This particular project started in 1998. Initial trial The Union Section of Anglo Platinum purchased a Solo H 606 RA long hole drilling rig from Sandvik Tamrock in 1997. In order to evaluate long hole drilling as a basis for face mechanization. The Solo series of drill rig was selected because it combines high drilling performance and good drilling accuracy with high versatility with a compact size. The mining method proposed by a consultant to Anglo Platinum was based on the current trackless mining method practised by Union Section. The trackless mining method is better described as a trackless development and transport method. Reef strike drives were installed approximately 40 metres apart on dip using trackless equipment. Reef was mined using hand-held pneumatic rock drills and scraper winches and the excavation was supported by sticks and crush pillars at the top of the panel. Rock scraped from the panel was loaded by Lad Haul Dumps (LHDs), trammed to an inclined haulage, and loaded into trucks for transport to the surface. It was intended that the Solo would drill from the bottom advance strike drive to the top advance strike drive. Blasted rock would still have to be scraped from the panel. It is also difficult to understand how well the support would have survived. In the initial motivation it was stated that drilling accuracy was of the utmost importance. Previous work by Sandvik Tamrock had shown that, in other parts of the world, 20 metre long holes could be drilled with a deviation not exceeding 100 mm provided that: ? holes were collared with low thrust pressure ? operating percussion pressure was kept low -often not ? exceeding 10 MPa ? drilling was to be with tubes, not rods. In early 1998 initial trials with the Solo H 606 RA were inconclusive; attempts were made to drill 40 metre long holes from one advance strike drive to another. Difficulty was experienced in measuring hole straightness and accuracy, there was no survey of the holes, and no blasting was done to expose hole barrels. A long hole mining system was then defined, with a corresponding face mining system, which led to the design of a test programme for the Solo drilling rig. Earlier experience at Telfer The proposed face mining system was based on a mining method that is practised at Telfer Gold Mine in Western Australia. Telfer has a series of domed reefs that dip at angles of less than 20° to more than 40°. The ore bodies are all thin, with widths from 0.6 metres to 0.8 metres. Figure 1 shows the face layout. Experience at Telfer indicated the following: ? The spacing and size of the dip pillars should be based on the rock mechanics of Union Section ? The length of the face is determined by the ability to correctly position the blast holes. Positioning of blast holes is a function of hole straightness and hole direction. Blast holes in Telfer were drilled 64 mm diameter with retrac bits from Sandvik. Extension steel was T38 by 1.8 metre lengths. A guide rod was fitted immediately behind the bit. To achieve greater accuracy' operators drill at relatively low percussion and thrust pressures. Results show that very good accuracy is achieved in 20 metre stopes and only fair accuracy in longer stopes. A sulfate reducing bacteria strain (named SRB-A) is isolated from sanitary wastewater by using anaerobic technology of Hungate. The studies of physiological, biochemical and phylogenic of the isolated strain are carried out. The colonies of the strain are circle. Cells that are slightly curve, rod-shaped with the size of 1.0~3.0µm in length and 0.8~1.0µm in width. The optimum temperature for growth of the organism is 30~35°C. The optimum pH for growth is 7.0~7.2. Strain SRB-A can use sodium lactate, sodium citrate, sodium acetate, ethanol and acetone as electronic acceptor but can not use glycerol, glucose, sucrose and sodium oxatate. The isolated strain reduces sulfate, sulfide, sulfur, DSMO and FeCl3, then nitrate and nitrite can not be used. The strain has higher tolerance of NaCl, and the optimum growth occurs in the presence of 5%~8% (w/v) NaCl. The result of 16S rDNA sequence analysis indicates that the isolated strain SRB-A is the most similar to Desulfo-vibrio halophilus, and the level of the similarity was 98.4%. The isolated strain has a stronger ability to reduce sulfate, and the level of sulfate reduction reaches about 90% at pH 7 in the liquid medium. 0.6 to 0.8 is the optimum COD/SO42- in the medium for the isolated strain to show better ability to reduce sulfate. At pH 2.5 the level of removal of Cu2+ reaches 96.3%. Under the condition of pH 3.5, the level of removal of Zn2+ reaches 92.6%. When the value of pH reaches about 7, the Fe3+ is precipitated by the formation of Fe(OH)3, and Fe3+ is removed up to 89.4% at last.

A description is given of a double heat treatment of 60-40 brass. Photomicrographs are included to show the changes that take place in the microstructure on reheating the water-quenched specimens. A wide variation in the mechanical properties may be obtained by the described heat-treatment method. ON SEVERAL occasions, when 60-40 brass is first obtained in the beta condition by quenching at about 825° C. and is then reheated, the writers have noticed that recrystallization will take place in the form of twin crystals at the grain boundaries of the original beta crystals. It was, therefore, thought that interesting results would be obtained if this twinning process was studied further, especially as to the temperature at which it first occurs. The material used in the investigation was a bar of extruded muntz metal, 1/2 in. in diameter, and of the following composition: Copper, 60.21 per cent.; zinc, 39.73 per cent.; lead, trace; iron, trace; tin, nil. Specimens I in. in length were sawed from this bar and a hole was drilled into the side of each specimen until it reached the center, and the tip of a platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple was inserted. A small Hoskins' resistance-type electric furnace was used for heating the specimens. The specimens were first heated at 840°C. for 2 hr. and then quenched in cold water, in order to get the material entirely in the beta state. In every case, in the reheating process, the furnace was brought to the desired temperature before the specimen was introduced. The time occupied in preheating was from 20 to 30 min. Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300° and 600°C (570° and 1,110°F) is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies, depending on structural homogeneity, porosity, and gangue quantity. Sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favors disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

Drilling for oil today involves exploration at depths ranging to 21,000 ft, nearly 4 miles. Geological formations encountered at these depths offer a tremendous challenge to the production, research, and service facilities of any drilling mud company.

The morphology and growth rate of ice grown in supercooled water are markedly affected by convection of the water. A dendritic ice sheet with water flowing past the dendrite tip exhibits deflection of the dendrite spine toward the upstream direction, accelerated growth of secondary spines on the upstream side, and suppression 01" secondaries on the downstream side. Flow causes a thin disk to become corrugated, the corrugations being parallel to the flow. Flow causes an increase in the growth rate of the ice. IF a small seed of ice is placed in slightly supercooled water, it grows initially as a disk with the axis of the disk parallel to the c axis of the ice crystal.' It appears that growth in the c direction is inhibited, while growth occurs with equal facility in all directions in the basal plane. It appears that growth rate as a function of interface temperature is very nearly equal for all directions similarly oriented relative to the c axis. Subsequent to the discoid growth, branching occurs and dendrites develop. The primary dendrite spines grow parallel to the six equivalent a axes of the crystal. Secondary, and in some cases, tertiary spines also grow in these directions. The highly anisotropic: dendritic growth indicates that there must be some finite difference of growth rate for different directions in the basal plane. These differences must be quite small, however, since if they were large, the discoid mode would not occur. Hence, it was expected that the dendrite growth direction could be deflected from the crystallographic direction by perturbation of the thermal field at the dendrite tip. Experiments were done in which perturbation of the thermal field was accomplished by causing the supercooled water to flow past the dendrite tip. The flow direction was perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, and was perpendicular to the primary spine of the unperturbed crystal. Supercooled water was supplied by a 15 cm cubical copper box, which was refrigerated and insulated so it could cool water to temperatures down to —2oC, and maintain the temperature constant to O.l°C for the duration of a run. Means for observing the ice are shown in Fig. l(a). Collimated light passes through the ice sheet and forms an image on the ground glass screen. A lucite box containing dry air was employed to prevent condensation. Ice of the desired orientation was provided by the seed holder shown in Fig. l(b). This device was made of lucite, and had a reservoir in which ice could be frozen by placing it in a freezer. This reservoir com-unicated with the outside only through a narrow gap between two sheets of lucite. The seed holder (after ice had been washed off its exterior) was immersed in the tank of supercooled water, the narrow gap terminating in a slot in the top of the flow channel. Ice growing through a thin water layer in the gap between the two sheets of lucite was oriented so its c axis was perpendicular to the sheets. This orientation is an application of a growth phenomenon2 which causes ice growing along a smooth solid surface in supercooled water to orient itself so its c axis is normal to the surface. "In connection with the proposed use of Cordeau-Bickford to fire L.O.X. (liquid oxygen explosives) in well drill holes, the question has arisen as to the effect of very low temperatures on (1) the rate of detonation of Cordeau-Bickford; (2) the sensitiveness to detonation of its TNT filling; and (3) the lead covering of Cordeau-Bickford.The Cordeau-Bickford used in this investigation was the standard 6 mm. size, such as is regularly used in blasting, and was manufactured and furnished by the Ensign-Bickford Company, Simsbury, Conn. All pieces tested were taken from rolls, all of which were from the same melted batch of TNT in order that all the pieces tested might be as nearly identical as possible.Different portions of this Cordeau-Bickford were tested plain (not countered), countered, and double countered. The countering and double countering was carried out by the manufacturer prior to shipment.The determination of the temperature at the instant of making a test was accomplished by the use of a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer and copper constantan thermocouples. Each couple was made from No. 28 B & S gage wire with short junctions. One junction was inserted in a hole drilled by a No. 60 drill through one lead wall of the Cordeau-Bickford to approximately the opposite wall, so that this junction was in the center of the TNT filling while the other junction was immersed in ice water. The potentiometer readings in millivolts were converted to °C. from the calibration curve of the thermocouple wire,"

Design and test a high-production coal mining machine that generates less respirable dust. Background Current coal cutting systems generate excessive amounts of airborne respirable dust and fines during the mining process. Dust control technologies, including dust dilution by ventilation and suppression by water sprays, are not always able to reduce dust levels sufficiently. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has designed a cutting system that reduces respirable dust generated by the cutting action of the drum. This cutting system, based on geometric principles developed in the 1500's, makes use of a constant depth, linear cut to remove coal at deeper cut depths and at lower rotary speeds than a conventional rotary drum. A comparison of the linear and rotary cut paths is shown in figure 1. Approach A full-scale prototype of the linear cutting concept was valuated under laboratory conditions to determine its performance relative to standard rotary drums. Results of these evaluations show production of fewer fines, or more uniform product size, a significant reduction in the amount of airborne dust, and reduced torque and power requirements (figure 2). On the basis of these results, a contract effort was undertaken by McCracken and Associates of Bristol, TN, to design a linear cutting head for underground testing.

"The $200M rehabilitation of the more than 100-year-old Gowanus Flushing Tunnel and pumping station located on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY required deep excavations in an extremely congested urban environment. The environment posed significant challenges, including: support of excavation for protection of existing structures, excavation through man-made fill while eliminating groundwater inflow due to potentially contaminated groundwater chemistry; discharge and disposal impacts; and potential settlement of surrounding structures. This paper will present the design and construction challenges associated with the construction of a new combined sewer overflow (CSO) chamberwhich included a jet grout bottom seal, to mitigate groundwater inflow during excavation. The foundation for the finished structure also included a unique system incorporating the jet grout bottom seal elements with deep jet grout columns (piles) acting as the foundation system for the final structure. Design and construction challenges included highly variable soil conditions such as man-made fill, obstructions from previous construction, presence of an organic stratum, and conflicts with existing timber foundation piles. The jet grout bottom seal was constructed in loose sands with the deeper jet grout foundation elements extending to bear on a dense sand stratum. Challenges associated with the bottom seal included grid spacing and construction sequencing. Wet in wet sequencing was used to mitigate potential windows in the bottom seal further complicated by shadowing from existing timber foundation piles.Introduction And BackgroundModernization of the Gowanus Tunnel Pumping System required deep excavations in the extremely congested urban environment of Brooklyn, NY. The project location is shown on Fig. 1 and 2. The focus of this paper is to present the design and construction challenges associated with the support of excavation, control of groundwater, and ultimate foundation support for the combined sewer overflow (CSO) bypass chamber extension. The project site was tightly constrained by adjacent, active roadways and underground utilities, as well as residential and industrial structures. Therefore, excavation support was required to limit ground movement and maintain the integrity of the surrounding facilities. Excavation depths to as much as 16 ft below ground level, 8 ft below groundwater, required that seepage and groundwater be controlled so as to minimize pumping and disposal of groundwater and maintain the surrounding groundwater levels to avoid potential settlement of adjacent roadways, utilities, and structures. In addition, the subsurface conditions required that the proposed CSO bypass chamber extension be supported on a deep foundation to avoid differential and total settlements that may be detrimental to the existing and expanded structure. Ore selection is generally a highly subjective task, with emphasis on producing product with a consistent target grade matching a perceived market requirement. A composite selection criterion ‘Comp’ (a linear function of the grade vector) can be used to maximise ore tonnage at a specified target grade (in Fe and contaminants) extractable from a block model. The blocks correspond to the selective mining units, with grades interpolated from diamond drill hole data. An iterative procedure has been developed to identify the coefficients and cut-off value for the composite function ‘Comp’, maximising potential ore tonnage at target grade.Commonly, target grade is predetermined by marketing; however, there is no guarantee that maximising ore tonnage at a specified target grade maximises the potential value of the mine. If the value of ore could be expressed as a linear function of the grade components, then these coefficients would be appropriate for the selection criterion ‘Comp’. The cut-off value for ‘Comp’ would correspond to the marginal cost of production; all blocks with a ‘Comp’ score above the cut-off would be classified as ore; and the cumulative grade of these ore blocks would be the average product grade over the life of the mine.Unfortunately, no such value function for iron ore is generally available. Methods for estimating the value function are discussed, using the spot price and sensitivities based either upon operational tolerances for Fe and the contaminants or upon published price differentials. This approach has been applied to an anonymous Pilbara deposit with about one million blocks averaging 1.1 kt. It is shown how the optimal target grade, cut-off grade and maximum tonnage can all be explored as a function of marginal cost and iron ore price. Alternatively, given marginal cost and an iron ore price, the effects of changing the tolerances (and therefore the relative costs of the contaminants) can also be explored.It is suggested this procedure can enable informed decision-making for an iron ore mine. Rather than setting final policy for the entire life-of-mine, the method enables target grades and tonnage estimates to be revised by re-computation as the mine life proceeds to recognise changes in market conditions and knowledge about the resource.It should be emphasised that this paper is concerned with ore selection rather than ore sequencing. Appropriate ore selection is a necessary but not sufficient condition for maximising value. Having identified the set of blocks that potentially maximise value, the sequence in which they are mined will present a trade-off between producing at constant grade and extracting high value ore early. The sequencing issue is not considered here. It is shown that optimum ore selection for an open pit mine is independent of any consideration of discount rates, although ore sequencing will depend upon the time value of money if the product grade is to vary across time.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Heat treatment of ore prior to comminution reduces power requirements for grinding, reduces grinding media wear, and improves recovery of iron values from a typical Minnesota magnetic taconite. Test data demonstrating this, as well as an analysis of the economics of commercial application of the technique, are presented. THE taconites in general are hard, tough ores, difficult to grind. Liberation of iron mineral constituents usually is accomplished by grinding the ore through at least 100 mesh, and often it has been found necessary to grind substantially through 325 mesh to achieve satisfactory recovery and grade in the concentration process. Because of the fineness of grind required and the enormous tonnages of material contemplated for treatment in the future, costs resulting from grinding media wear and power consumption, together with capital investment required for comminution, approach astronomical figures. Economy in any one of these elements per ton of material ground could very well reflect a considerable saving to the ferrous industry in yearly costs. With this in mind, the Research Laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. have launched a program to discover means of effecting this economy. The initial phase of the work as described here deals with a heat treatment of crushed raw ore, followed by thermal shock in cooling, for the preparation of rod mill feed. Several investigators1-" ave noted an improvement in the grindabilities of ores treated in this manner. One investigator2 subjected low grade iron ores to heat treatment in an electric furnace. Basing his conclusions on screen analyses of crushed products, he observed that treated ore was more easily crushed than the untreated. He reported that observation of the treated and untreated ore through a microscope revealed cracks following the grain boundaries in treated ore, whereas no cracks were present in untreated ore. However, few if any have quantified the improvement in terms of total hp hours saved, reduction of wear of grinding media, or reduction of capital costs of grinding equipment involved. By means of Bond rod mill and ball mill grindabilitiesh nd by comparative wear tests, the conditions maintained during this investigation have been definitely evaluated. Heat treatment experiments have been made on a batch scale in a muffle furnace, followed by continuous scale experiments in a rotary kiln under various conditions of temperature, atmosphere, retention time, and quenching to determine the combination that would give the greatest improvement in the grindability of a taconite without affecting adversely the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite. From these data, relative costs have been calculated for grinding both untreated and heat- treated ore on a basis of plant capacity of 120 tons per hour. Heat requirements for a rotary kiln, as well as the kiln capacity required for the treatment, have been estimated. For these tests 50 tons of ore were obtained from the Aurora mine of the Erie Mining Co., Hibbing, Minn. The ore was reported7 to have been selected from the magnetic portion of the lower chert horizons. An average chemical analysis of' this portion is shown in Table I and an approximate mineralogi-cal analysis is shown in Table 11. No attempt was made to differentiate between the various silicates because the compositions vary widely on the different horizons and depend on the degree of oxidation. Minnesotite, however, is the predominant silicate. The siderite grains were dispersed throughout the ore but were essentially associated with the rock-forming minerals. "On the basis of analyzing current design and applications, the structure form, working loads and design principles of shaft sinking headframe are summarized in this paper. To overcome the insufficient bearing capacity and geometry size of the finalized shaft sinking headframe in China, a series of new large shaft sinking headframe were developed under vertical shaft construction conditions of maximum net diameter of 12.0 m and maximum depth of 1200 m. The new series shaft sinking headframe include two sets (with single sheave platform and double sheave platform), three dimensions (optimum shaft diameter <8.0 m, 8.0-10.0 m, and 10.0-12.0 m, respectively) for each set, and has innovation and optimization on structure of the sheave wheel platform (MU type) and bracing frame (REN and ZHONG type). The largest new shaft sinking headframe can arrange up to 4 hoisting equipment simultaneously and has bearing capacity more than 10000 kN. Two of the new shaft sinking headframe were successfully applied in practical engineering, such as the Hulusu auxiliary shaft, the Dahaize 1# auxiliary shaftand Sishanling auxiliary shaft. These applications showed that the new shaft sinking headframe has sufficient bearing capacity and reliable applicability. The new shaft sinking headframe could provide an effective guarantee for safety and efficiency sinking of deep-large shaft in the future.INTRODUCTIONShaft sinking headframe is one of the basic shaft sinking structures and it is mainly for hanging hoisting containers and sinking facilities in sinking a vertical shaft (Yu & Shi, 1991; Wang, Jing, & Liu, 2007). Currently, 7 types of steel pipe sinking headframe are used in China, which are mainly finalized by the Ministry of Coal Industry of China (Wang, 1988). As shown in Table 1, V-type is the largest of them and it is only suitable for sinking shaft of diameter less than 8 m and depth less than 1 000 m(Yang, 1982). However, with the increase of mining depth and scale of mineral resources in China, the diameter and depth of newly built vertical shaft are increasing continuously (Xie, Zhou, Xue, Wang, Zhang, & Gao, 2012; Qi & Pu, 2013). At present, the maximum net diameter of vertical shaft is close to 12 m, and the maximum depth is more than 1600 m (Yang & Chen, 2015; Xu, Yang, Liu, & Qin, 2015). The shaft sinking headframe has become the main restrictive factor for the development of sinking equipment, such as the height of muck discharging platform cannot meet the usage requirement of hydraulic umbrella driller, the size of sheave wheel platform is difficult to arrange the increasing hoisting and suspension equipment, the bearing capacity is insufficient to meet the needs of multiple hoisting loads in sinking a deep-large shaft, etc. Therefore, development of new shaft sinking headframe for deep-large shaft (>1000 m in depth and 8~12 m in diameter) is urgently required for China and also the whole world."
