About 20 percent of world gold production has been contributed by gold deposits in Archaean greenstone belts, of which ca 2100 tonnes of gold has been produced from Archaean greenstone belts in Western Australia (Phillips, in press). These deposits are, therefore, important exploration targets and an under-standing of their nature and genesis can help to formulate exploration strategies and delineate potential targets.A literature survey of Archaean granitoid-greenstone terrains indicates that a wide variety of lithologies host gold deposits. The major part of production from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, has come from mafic volcanics andintrusives (70% of production),with significant contributions from BIF-hosted ores (15%) and low production from sediments, felsic volcanics, porphyry intrusives and granitoids (Groves et al., in press). El estudio evaluó las áreas iniciales del programa de revegetación final de la minera Yanacocha. Las áreas de estudio son Maqui Maqui y San José, se localizan en la zona este de operaciones y se encuentran en cierre desde el año 200 y son restauradas dentro del programa de revegetación de áreas finales de la empresa. Como parte de la medición del éxito del programa se realiza el monitoreo de las mismas utilizando estas nuevas tecnologías. Por ello, es aplicable como parte de la conducción de los programas de revegetación de los planes de cierre de minas.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood fires in a laboratory-scale tunnel network. Experimental measurements include ignition delay time, flame spread rate, ventilation air and gas flow rates, wood temperature, gas temperature, pressure and composition, thermal flux, and smoke particulates. These measurements form a data base for fire-scaling studies and provide information on various fire processes, such as flow interaction between ventilation air and fire, fire throttling and reverse flow, and duct fire energetics. Results show how hazards of duct fires relate to the development of (1) asphyxiating and toxic fumes, (2) explosive gas mixtures, (3) throttling of ventilation air, and (4) high-temperature combustion products. Such fire hazards should be carefully considered when testing flammabilities of materials used in a confined underground mine environment.

SALT production in Louisiana and Texas at the present time is entirely from salt domes of the interior and coastal groups. Before and during the Civil War salt was recovered from numerous salines and salt springs by evaporation in open 'kettles. The location of these in nearly every instance was near what is now known to be a salt dome, and the source of the salt in the salines and spring waters was that in the salt core. The tops of many of the shallower domes have been subjected to erosion1. The discovery that the salt occurred as large masses of rock salt in the form of domes was made in May, 1802, at Avery Island, La., by John Marsh Avery, grandson of the original owner, John C. Marsh, who built the old salt works in 18122. The first shaft for mining was sunk on the Avery dome in 1867 by Chouteau and Price. It was 90 ft. deep, about 58 ft. being in solid salt. It was abandoned in 1870. There are three general groups or fields of salt domes; interior Louisiana in northern Louisiana, interior Texas in northeastern Texas, and the coastal domes nearer the Gulf Coast and extending from the Mississippi River to the Rio Grande. This last group contains by far the greatest number of domes. As many of the coastal domes especially are prolific producers of petroleum and a few of sulfur, their geology has been intensively studied and fully covered in the literature. The depth to the top of the salt varies from near the surface, where shallow ground waters have dissolved the salt to just below recent deposits, to several thousand feet, where the depth has been estimated only by geophysical methods. The diameter of the salt core varies from less than ½ mile to over 2 miles. Only domes where the salt is compara-tively near the surface have been developed for commercial salt. Three deeper domes, which will be described later, have recently been developed or are in process of development, as a source of brine for chemical use.

The human lumbar spine is inherently an unstable structure and requires sophisticated neuromuscular control to maintain its stability and for performing physical tasks. As a consequence, it is important to understand the potential health effects on human operators of mechanical stimuli such as shock and vibration.1 Impact applied to a vehicle operator combines the risk of sudden, unexpected load with the mechanical stress of the seated posture.2 Because many work environments contain the potential for multiple, unexpected impacts, it is important to understand how the trunk muscles respond to complex conditions. We believe the results have implications for isolation design and standards development. Methods Muscle activity was recorded during simple and complex impacts, applied randomly and without warning, while subjects sat on an air-suspension truck seat located on a man-rated 6-DOF motion platform (Rexroth-Hydraudyne). Simple (single) impacts consisted of 100 ms quarter-sine jolts in the side-to-side (L and R) and vertical upward (V) directions with peak amplitude at 0.4 g. Complex impacts consisted of combinations of two simple (single) impacts in sequence (LV, RV, VL, VR), separated by 100 ms. Twelve right-handed males (23.7 ± 7.8 years old) were tested without a blindfold under 2 posture conditions (supported while leaning back and unsupported, sitting upright) and 2 seat suspension conditions (present or absent). Each type of impact was repeated three times under each posture and suspension condition, resulting in 84 impacts in total. Surface EMG signals from the left and right erector spinae (ES), rectus abdominis (AR), external obliques (EO) and internal obliques (IO) were recorded and transformed to 25ms RMS values. The response time, defined as the time the muscle activity exceeded the mean + 2 STD of the pre-impact resting period, peak response amplitude, and time were then derived. A mixed-model repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate statistical significance, where type I error rate was set at .05. Results One question we asked of these data was whether there were differences in responses related to simple single strike impacts (L, R, or V) and complex, double-strike impacts (LV, RV, VL, VR). There are 21 possible combinations of comparisons of simple and complex impacts to each other. The differences found are listed in Table 1.

In-situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the anion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in southeast Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate, and trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant prior to yellow cake precipitation.

Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing restrictions on effluent pa, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pa levels to specified limits.

This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

WITH increased coal production and mechanization of coal mines many transportation problems arise. The main objective is to bring the coal to the tipple or dump it as quickly as possible. Larger and faster haulage locomotives or two locomotives connected in tandem have been adopted to solve the problem. Motor equipment, gears and control systems of locomotives to be placed on these hauls are carefully studied to meet these requirements, by an analysis of motor characteristic curves with the corresponding tractive effort curves, in order to determine the correct load for maximum efficiency and to determine the approximate schedule. Control equipment is usually considered to be the controller and resistance. Sometimes accelerating curves are calculated in order to obtain smooth starting in the least possible time without slipping the wheels. Train control is very important, but why limit this to acceleration? Deceleration or retardation of the locomotive is a part of the train control and should be given as much consideration as the control for acceleration. TYPES OF BRAKING Common braking systems for mine locomotives utilize screw-type mechanical brakes, dynamic braking and the air brake. For gathering and haulage locomotives, the screw-type mechanical brake is regarded as standard. A brake of this kind cannot be applied without much effort and lapse of time. Motormen, like other people, follow the path of least resistance, and therefore have their brakes ready for instant application-which means that the shoes are virtually dragging. Even then, a motorman bucks and plugs the motors to gain time and avoid as much physical effort as possible. "Bucking of motors" consists in turning the reverse cylinder of the controller to parallel position corresponding to the opposite direction of travel while the locomotive is in motion, without applying power from an external source. When this occurs, both motors tend to act as series generators, because the armatures are revolving and there is residual magnetism in the field circuit. Owing to slight differences in motor manufacture, one of these will generate a slightly higher potential and will overcome the generated voltage of the second and tend to drive it as a motor in the reverse direction. This action retards the locomotive but is very severe on the segments of the reverse cylinder and on the motor commutators. "Plugging motors" is the application of power to the motors corresponding to the opposite direction of travel. The control objectives and constraints for grinding circuits are ana- lysed, taking a single-stage ballmill-cyclone circuit as an example. The design of a hierarchical modular control system is described, for implemen- tation on modern microprocessor-based control systems. Product sizing measurement is identified as a problem area, and a new approach to product sizing inference, from on-line cyclone feed and overflow measure- ments, is presented. The procedure over-comes several practical difficulties of a previously proposed inferential method and is therefore expected to find application in more advanced grinding circuit control systems.

Use of prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) for pressure tunnel liners is gaining popularity with contractors, engineers, and owners. This paper presents loading considerations and a beam-spring computer model approach to tunnel liner analysis, together with ultimate strength (US) and service load (SL) procedures for liner design. The US procedure is best suited to check for adequate liner strength under extreme loading conditions. The SL procedure, based on conventional pipeline design practice, is considered more appropriate when addressing crack control and serviceability under normal working load conditions. Other design and construction considerations are discussed and a design example is presented.

Diffuse - reflectance Fourier - transform infrared spectroscopy, Hallimond tube flotation and microelectrophoresis have been utilized to investigate the reactions involved in the adsorption-abstraction of K-amylxanthate on finely ground galena and pyrite. In order to work under well-controlled conditions both minerals were wet ground in a specially built laboratory stainless steel or iron mill. Four surface products were found to be formed on galena: monocoordinate lead xanthate, non-stoichiometric lead xanthate, dixanthogen, and amyl carbonate disulphide. Only dixanthogen was observed on pyrite after using stainless steel rods, while ferric iron xanthate was found when iron rods were utilized.

Due to its complex rheological behaviour, shotcrete induces a ground-structure interaction that differs significantly from other types of tunnel linings. For the same reason, the instrumentation of shotcrete linings presents special problems, particularly when it comes to estimating the stresses transferred to the lining during construction. The shotcrete characteristics which affect the stress distribution are initially discussed. Measurements obtained in a recent soft ground tunnel are also presented. The conclusions are aimed at introducing practical recommendations for the design of tunnels where shotcrete is used as initial and/or final support.

"The purpose of this report is to present a generalized preliminary design and cost estimates for a typical heap leach operation such as might be undertaken in Northern Ontario. This report should be of value to anyone in the mining industry planning, or contemplating, a heap leaching operation in Ontario, either on a large or small scale. While more detailed costing and design work will obviously be required for each specific project being contemplated, the data provided in this report should enable parties to make preliminary estimates of the costs of proposed projects and should identify most of the planning and design parameters that will need to be considered.Although heap leaching has been used extensively as a low cost gold recovery method in other parts of the world for many years, it has only recently become of interest to the Canadian mining industry.In order to investigate and demonstrate the feasibility of using heap leaching in Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in 1982, undertook to locate a private sector proponent willing to undertake a 10,000 ton demonstration project. This project was to have been carried out at a production scale under normal northern Ontario field conditions. The Ministry was to have provided technical management and design for the designated project."

In recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. The Purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing 18 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic I5-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wet-tability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. Natural lignocellulosic fibers are successfully replacing synthetic fibers in many engineering applications. In addition to well-known conventional lignocellulosic fibers, others with promising properties are now being considered. The present work investigated the mechanical and structural characteristics of a relatively high strength fiber, curaua (Ananas erectifolius) from the Amazon region of Brazil. The results obtained from tensile tests confirmed the superior strength while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis displayed features that justify the possibility of using the curaua fiber as an effective reinforcement for polymeric composites.

"Impedance measurements were used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of acidic zinc sulphate electrolytes containing Sb3+, gelatin and their mixtures. The data were correlated with cyclic voltammetry curves made using synthetic as well as industrial electrolytes. The cyclic voltammetry results were similar to those obtained in previous studies in that antimony caused a depolarizing effect while gelatin gave an increase in the potential for zinc nucleation on an aluminum substrate.The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ElS) evaluations were conducted on electrodeposited zinc at three overpotential values. The potentials were chosen to represent various current density regions in the zinc polarization curves. The antimony and gelatin gave characteristic impedance plots which correlated with expected behavior, particularly current efficiency. Both antimony and glue appear to modify the intermediate zinc reaction sequence, but in different ways. The data strongly suggest that film formation and stability are major factors in the zinc ion reduction mechanism.IntroductionThe zinc electrodeposition process is sensitive to the presence of a variety of organic and inorganic chemical species in the electrolyte [I]. Such components can produce either beneficial or harmful effects, depending on their relative concentrations and electrochemical behavior. Extensive investigations have been made to gain a better understanding of the changes occurring during zinc deposition in the presence of such additives. Techniques employed include microscopy, x-ray diffraction, dynamic voitammetry, current imd energy efficiency studies [2-5]. Ultimately, the objectives are to identify the factors which most affect the efficiency of the process and to provide a means to effectively control them.One of the most harmful impurities is antimony, which can be detrimental when present at concentrations as low as 10 to 20 parts per billion. Dramatic changes in zinc polarization behavior, deposition structure and current efficiency have been observed with antimony in the electrolyte. Antimony appears to lower the hydrogen overpotential by hydride formation or a similar catalytic mechanism, which allows an increase in localized corrosion and zinc dissolution [6-8]."

The behavior of gold particles on a spiral was studied using radioactive gold tracers. The method allowed the effects of particle size, particle shape, pulp density, feed rate and splitter settings to be studied. Although the method has been successfully applied to other gravity concentrators, it was found that reliable results were more difficult to obtain on the spiral. However, these preliminary results show that, with suitable precautions, the technique is capable of providing valuable information, unobtainable from conventional studies, that could be used to better optimize spiral performance.

In medium- to high-grade metamorphic terrains such as found in New York City(NYC), rock mass texture and mineralogy are important factors in predicting TBM penetration destiny. Integration of data from over two decades of traditional field and tunnel mapping suggest that hard-rock TBM penetration in the NYC area depends upon textural, mineralogic, and structural control. The bedrock of NYC consists of many different lithologic units of varying age, composition, texture, and metamorphic grade including many varieties of intrusive rock. In addition, brittle faults of numerous orientations cut the polydeformed crystalline bedrock, producing zones of highly fractured and disturbed ground and high water inflows. Pre-bid compilation of published bedrock data, drill core analysis by geologists to establish lithologic and mineralogic trends, integrated surface geologic mapping along a proposed alignment, and targeted petrographic and geotechnical investigations to characterize the rock mass conditions together constitute an important prelude to successful subsurface bidding and tunneling. A carefully planned program of as-built geological mapping, structural analysis, fracture class mapping, and monitoring of machine performance data provide important information for adjusting to changed conditions. In complex terrains, a clear understanding of the structural geology of any proposed tunnel line is the simplest and most cost-effective method to mitigate losses encountered during TBM tunneling.
