The chief use of scrapers at this mine has been on lead ore of milling grade, clean and dry, in stulled stopes, 50-100 ft. long, 5-12 ft. high, and pitching 20-30°. Scrapers have also been used to fill these stopes with waste. The first scraper used (Fig. 1) is modified from a Cleveland-Cliffs design, being only 30 in. wide. It is light, weighing but 95 lb., handles well, and-digs itself in; but it spills part of its load on a long haul. It could be improved by lengthening the side plates, but because of the double bent angle irons, it is difficult to make at mine shops and has been discarded. Resource nationalism is essentially mandatory government intervention in natural resources businesses by political or economic means in order to benefit the nation and the people. It is attacking the mining industry more and more rampantly by all kinds of means since the twenty-first century. Poor countries who count on a resource-led economic growth usually find themselves trapped into “resource curse”. The harmfulness of resource nationalism for investors is that one event can quickly escalate and lead to a chain of events which make projects commercially unavailable. In spite of historical and theoretical social investigations in the causes of resource nationalism, rare studies engaged in quantification of dominant parameters of it. The objective of this study is to find significant factors that dominate the occurrence of resource nationalism for important metal and energy resources producing countries and quantify their marginal effects. The study applies binary choice logit model for panel data using pooled method. One feature of the research is that binary data set of occurrence of resource nationalism are sorted out by authors referencing U.S. Geological Survey’s reports. The results indicate that high-technology export (% manufactured export), ores and metals exports (% merchandise exports), rule of law (world governance indicator), trade (% GDP), and natural resource rent except forest (% GDP ) dominant the occurrence of resource nationalism for high and upper middle income group countries; government effectiveness (world governance indicator), policy perception index (The Fraser Institute), high-technology export (% manufactured export), and mineral rent (% GDP) dominant the occurrence of resource nationalism for lower middle and low income countries. According to our model, probability of occurrence of resource nationalism in 90 countries are predicted. Top 10 risky countries in 2012 are estimated to be North Korea, India, Honduras, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Burkina Faso, Mongolia, Cuba, Bolivia, and Peru. The study is a primary trial of researching on resource nationalism and provides some insights for theoretical building and simulation on the issue.

Kinetic Dependence of Refractory Gold Sulfide Biooxidation Using Different Microorganism Association In this investigation, refractory sulfide concentrate from a deposit located in northern Russia was treated using biohydrometallurgical technology. The objective of this work was to compare the accelerated refractory sulfide concentrate biooxidation abilities of the pure and mixed mesophilic and moderately termophilic acidophiles cultures. Pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and two associations of the: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans + Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans + Leptospirillum + Sulfobacillus were used in this investigation. Results of sulfide concentrate bioleaching were analysed using the enzyme catalysis theory. Different effective kinetics parameters were calculated for Michaelis-Menten equation, such as Michaelis' constant and maximum rate of the enzymatic reaction. It was shown that the increase of microorganisms' species decreased Michaelis' constant. Lower Michaelis' constant characterises increasing bacteria ferment affinity to substrate (treated concentrate). As a result, the rates of sulfide minerals biooxidation have increased. This investigation has demonstrated that cultures of the different microorganism species, including moderately termophilic, allow to enhance different parameters of the biohydrometallurgical technology for the refractory gold sulfide concentrate treatment. We can see that bacterial leaching stage duration decreased and sulfide minerals oxidation increased. When the bioresidues were subjected to the hydrometallurgical stage, which includes aeration and sorption cyanidation, the operation factors were also enhanced. The decrease of aeration duration and the growth of the precious metal extraction by sorption cyanidation was achieved. Cyanide consumption was also reduced. The results of this investigation were used in design of an industrial plant.

Evaluation of Grinding Medium Wear in Stirred Mills The standard fine grinding machines in the minerals industry are stirred mills whose performance largely depends on the competency of the grinding medium. Medium wear in stirred mills is one of the key parameters for medium selection. A wear evaluation methodology is developed and applied in this paper to measure the wear rate of river sand using a laboratory batch stirred mill. The procedure is demonstrated by testing the sand medium in a 0.55 kW batch stirred media detritor (SMD). The sand wear rate determined in the laboratory batch mill is successfully scaled up to that determined on a full-scale Metso 355 kW SMD mill.

A series of gelatinous permissible explosives was prepared with increasing sodium nitrate content and subjected to an improved technique for evaluating incendivity in coal dust-air and coal dust-gas-air mixtures. Those explosives containing an appreciable amount of sodium nitrate were found to be very hazardous in coal dust-air and coal dust-gas-air mixtures.

DARKEN1 has pointed out that in most binary liquid metal systems the thermodynamic behavior is relatively simple in the terminal regions. Between the terminal regions. the thermodynamic behavior is more complex. To describe this behavior. he has defined the stability and the excess stability as shown: Qualitatively, an inflection in the free energy of mixing curve results in a change in sign, from positive to negative, of the stability function and is associated with a phase separation. Conversely, a large, positive stability over a narrow composition range is indicative of compound formation. Darken has shown a number of binary systems where the excess stability is constant in the terminal regions and varies sharply in between. The work described in this communication was undertaken to study the variation of stability and excess stability in a binary system as a function of temperature. In addition, this work provides means for the direct comparison of previously existing equilibrium (activity) and calorimetric (molar heat of mixing) data on the Hg-Sn system. Hildebrand2 measured the vapor pressure of mercury over Hg-Sn alloys at 595°K. Calorimetric studies were made by Kawakami3 at 523°K and by Kleppa4 at 423°K. In this work, the equilibrium vapor pressure of mercury was measured over a series of Hg-Sn alloys at 453" and 503°K by use of fused salt manometer with one arm exposed to mercury vapor. Deflections of the fused salt manometer were balanced by argon pressure on the other arm. Argon pressure was subsequently measured with a dibutyl phthalate manometer. Tin activities were determined by graphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation making use of the familiar Darken5 a function. The activities of mercury and tin showed positive deviation from Raoult's law at 453 and 503°K as Hildebrand observed at 595 K. In Fig. 1 are plotted log activity of mercury and tin vs reciprocal temperature. The plot contains activities obtained from calorimetric studies. "Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations having large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Problems associated with effective operation of this equipment has created the need for better operator knowledge of mill load behavior and the need for new instrumentation capable of providing accurate information about load movement and composition. This paper discusses two performance enhancing instruments available to address these needs.INTRODUCTIONThe economic demands of new mining projects has resulted in increased equipment sizes and this is particularly evident in milling where there are now many SAG mills operating in the range of 28’ – 40’ diameter with installed powers of 8 – 22 MW. These mills are designed to process very high capacities of ore daily2 and the variable characteristics of many of the deposits mined results in the need to vary the mill speed during processing to cater for the changes in ore hardness. Mill speed changes often result in operational problems associated with high-energy impacts striking the mill liners reducing energy efficiency as well as degrading the grinding media through breakage, accelerating liner wear and in extreme cases even breaking liners. These operational problems have given rise to the need to have instruments aimed at providing operators with accurate information in real time about the load composition and movement within SAG mills.The original concepts for operating SAG mills were derived from past experience of operation of conventional fixed speed ball mills. However, the relatively stable conditions that applies with fixed speed and constant ball charge in ball mills supports theoretical approaches to the grinding process based on energy calculations such as Bond’s Work Index concept. Later a set of parameters Si and Bij were used for describing load kinetics, but all of these methods neglect the details of load movement and how the energy is actually used inside of the mill. It is now commonly accepted as a basic rule that SAG mills grind by impact whilst ball mills grind by attrition and consequently SAG mills are designed and operated to generate a large amount of impacts by the cataracting load without paying sufficient attention to where these impacts are actually occurring. Many mills are operated on the basis that as long as the mill is consuming the expected power there is little attention given to the class of bodies using this energy and this often results in the inefficient use of energy."

INTRODUCTION Tunnel construction has always been an extremely high risk form of contracting primarily due to the inaccessability of information concerning the ground conditions to be encountered during excavation. We certainly make every effort to overcome this problem through borings, geological research, site visits, etc.; but at best owners, engineers and contractors alike are only able to interpolate a relatively small amount of factual data from isolated sections of the project into a forecast of ground conditions for the entire project. In essence this becomes an "educated guessing game" with risk to reward ratios (and subsequently the bid price) in direct relationship to the contractor's confidence in the quality of the guess. In many instances it is economically or physically infeasible to obtain information and of course the total picture is never known until the project is complete. This problem effects the contract format as well as price. The contractor's ability to handle unforseen problems on the project become extremely important as to the project's overall success. The following pages contain an actual case history of a project which affords an excellent example of the entire spectrum of situations resulting from tunnel construction in difficult ground conditions.

The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.

Fine tailings produced in the milling process have traditionally been disposed of in tailings ponds. Attempts have been made to use these fine tailings in backfill, however, to date the majority of backfill operations have utilized only a small percentage of fines. The remaining fines are, therefore, being sent to tailings ponds creating a waste disposal and environmental problem. This disposal practice is even more acute in the gold milling industry where fine grinding, required for value liberation, results in the production of large quantities of fine tailings, of which a large percentage cannot be used in backfill. Through Cold-Bond Tailings Agglomeration (CBTA), these fine tailings can be agglomerated into pellets which can then be used as a coarse aggregate in back-fill. This paper presents the results of using these pellets to create an Agglomerated Tailings Paste Fill (ATPF) made entirely of fine gold mill tailings and cementing binders. Through this process, supplementary imported aggregates such as sand, gravel, rock-chips are not required while still maintaining adequate back fill strength. By using this CBTA technology, fine tailings are diverted from tailings ponds and becomes utilized as a value added resource in the form of aggregates for use in paste fill.

"The Marvast monazite deposit is located 35 kilometres south - southwest of Marvast in Yazd province of Iran. A representative sample weighing approximately 10 tons was prepared to study the amenability of the ore to physical beneficiation. The size fraction of +1000 µm was removed due to low monazite content and the –1000 µm size fraction was concentrated by the gravity-classification-magnetic methods. According to the results of sample characterization, the representative sample contains 220 ppm REO that is contained in monazite. It was concentrated to 41.5% REO by the above mentioned methods. The recovery of REO in the monazite concentrate was 41.5%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are critical metals in many countries (Gupta, 2005; UK Geological Survey, 2011). Increasing application of these metals in hi-tech industries and price fluctuation caused by Chinese production policy has led other countries to focus on their local resources (UK Geological Survey, 2011). In this case, Iran is not an exception.REE mineralization in Iran is mainly located in the central zone. Regarding the exploration data, these deposits are divided into two categories. The first group is iron ore deposits in which the REE are carried by phosphate minerals. The other group is placer deposits where monazite is the major mineral of the deposit. The Marvast placer deposit is one of these types of deposit (Daliran, 1990; Mokhtari, 2008; Torab, &Lehmann, 2007; Alipour, 2014)."

DIAMOND drilling has advanced and expanded during the past few years. Along with this increase there has been a marked trend to rely more and more upon drilling for the outlining of ore for reserve purposes. This is especially true underground, where men have not been available for opening up ore by crosscuts, drifts and raises. During the recent heavy call upon known ore reserves, more drilling has been done for exploration and it has become expedient to drill longer lateral holes from underground and deeper holes both from surface and from exploration headings in the mines. Furthermore, these deeper holes have to be drilled closely enough to warrant calculation of "probable" if not "proven" ore, from the results obtained therefrom. Interpretation of diamond-drill results has become more precise and reliable with the growing knowledge and understanding of the geologic structures that control the geometry of ore distribution, and this has broadened the field of usefulness of the drill. All of this has created a necessity and a demand for more accurate control of the hole as to direction, a more precise and reliable method of surveying for position, and a need for better and more complete core recovery, as well as larger cores, to provide an adequate sample. At depth the control becomes more difficult and, at the same time, more important. CONTROL A close study of drilling in various parts of the world for a period of more than 20 years has brought to light one definite rule, practically invariable; namely, that diamond-drill holes tend to deviate into a position normal to any structure existing in the rocks, such as bedding, schistosity, gneissosity, or even parting or jointing-even if the hole is started at almost any angle other than parallel with the structure. It also appears that the better developed the structure is, the more quickly will the hole get into a position perpendicular to it. It has often been said that there is a tendency for holes to "drift" in the direction of rotation. This is obviously untrue, for in a vertical hole the measure of deviation would depend upon the azimuth chosen as zero, and there is an infinite number of choices. It has been proved, however, that in homogeneous rocks there is a tendency for the hole to corkscrew, and that the direction of the spiral is the same as the direction of rotation. This may account for the belief that holes drift in that direction. Some tests have been made using right-hand and left-hand rods, and these show that no matter what the direction of rotation the hole will swing into a position perpendicular to the structure. Methods of Control The foregoing empirical rule may be used as an indirect method of control. If the prevailing structure is known, it may be advantageous to start the hole as nearly normal to it as possible, for the nearer the direction of the hole is to this ideal, the straighter it will remain. The quarrying and related industries of the United States made a large gain in employment (man-hours of work) in 1942 with a somewhat smaller number of men employed than in 1941. This was accomplished chiefly by increasing the number of workdays per man and also by increasing the length of the workday. In spite of the greater volume of work performed, the industry had a more favorable accident-frequency rate in 1942 than in the previous year. Accident and employment reports from operating companies showed that the industry employed 84,270 men for an average of 271 days per man in 1942, with a volume of work of almost 181 million man-hours. The average workshift comprised 7.93 hours, and the number of man-shifts worked totaled nearly 23 million. Injuries from accidents in and about the quarries and plants caused disability to 6,461 employees, 112 of whom died as a result of their injuries, including 28 employees whose lives were lost in a single disaster. The accident-frequency rate in the industry was 35.73 per million man-hours worked, comparing favorably with a rate of 40.11 for the previous year. However, the figure for 1942 included a death rate of 0.62 per million man-hours which, because of the disaster referred to, was considerably higher than the fatality rate of 0.44 for 1941. Had the disaster not occurred, the fatality rate for the industry for 1942 would have been 0.46. The major disaster in which 28 lives were lost occurred on March 26 at the Sandts Eddy quarry of the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. near Easton Pa.

One of the important hazards in coal mining is the danger of ignition of explosive mixtures of methane and air or coal dust and air, or both, by the explosives used in blasting the coal. It has long been recognized that certain explosives are more dangerous than others in this respect. ' In America and abroad, government testing stations have been established for officially passing on the suitability of explosives for use in coal mines. In this country the Federal government is given no power to enforce the use of the approved explosives but merely publishes from time to time, through the Bureau of Mines, those explosives which have passed the tests necessary to place them on the list for use in coal mines. In spite of this lack of police power, the increase in the use of permissible .explosives since the promulgation of the fist list in 1909 has been rapid. In 1912, only 8 per cent. of the explosives used in coal mines were permissible; in 1925, this figure had increased to 25 per cent. While the past record of permissible explosives has been most gratifying, it is very desirable that we pave the way for further improvement in explosives and blasting methods by learning more about the mechanism of ignition of gas and coal dust by explosives. To this end a considerable amount of investigative work already has been carried out and a large amount yet remains to be done. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss briefly the effect of the characteristics of explosives and method of loading in the borehole on the liability of a blown-out shot to ignite explosive mixtures of gas or dust. For an account of the methods by which an explosive is tested for permissibility for use in coal mines, the reader is referred to Schedule 17-A of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the heading-and-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading. In mines, the tunnels, drifts, cross-cuts, adits, etc., are usually of small diameter, hence the driving of headings applies to completed tunnels in mining-work, except, of course, in cases like drainage-tunnels and main entries leading into coal-mines, where conditions call for tunnels of large diameter, approximating those driven for railway-service. In building aqueducts the tunnels are driven from 6 to 8 ft. in diameter up to 15 or 20 ft., while in railway-service the dimensions vary from 18 to 30 ft. in diameter. There is no department of rock-excavation so difficult as that of heading-driving. This work also belongs to the most expensive class in rock-excavation. A heading is driven directly in the solid. There are no lines of lesser resistance towards which to direct the energy of the blast, but the material must be blown out by main force. The completion of the heading simplifies all the rest of the work of excavation. It is easy, for instance, to enlarge a heading either from above, below or on the sides, by breaking towards the open face through holes approximately at right angles to the axis of the heading; or the enlargement sometimes takes place by holes driven outside of the heading running approximately parallel with it, the rock

The objective of this work is to evaluate the physical quality achieved in the iron ore pellets and the temperature profile in the pellet bed by applying an inversion in the flow during the cooling. The firing of pellets requires a minimum residence time in the sintering temperatures of the hematite grains [1]. The applied concept aims at raising this time to pellets located at the bottom of the bed which would provide an improvement in the physical quality of the product. The tests were carried out in a pot-grate type oven and the samples of fired pellets were divided into three aliquots according to the loading position of the pot termed top, middle and bottom, the pellets were sieved and subjected to physical tests and the compared to conventional indurating flow with the same ores and inputs. It was possible to show an increase of 7 to 8% in the compressive strength of the medium and bottom layers, maintaining the top layer results. The objectives of the research were achieved and the tests will be extended to assess the impacts on the mass and energy balance of the indurating machine and its components.
