AMONG the large number of deep mines in the world there are several which do not differ much in depth. The St. John del Rey mine, in Brazil, has reached a vertical depth of 6726 ft. below the top of its shaft; miners enter it, however, through an adit which intersects the shaft 324 ft. below its top, wherefore it might be said that the mine is really only 6400 ft. deep. In the Kolar gold field of India there are a number of deep shafts, one of which reaches to a vertical depth of 6140 ft. below surface. In South Africa also there are a number of deep shafts, the Village Deep being 6100 ft. early in 1921. The City Deep, Ltd., proposes to sink to a depth of 7000 ft. but pre-sumably by the time it does so the St. John del Rey will be deeper than that, since it has been increasing in depth at an average rate of about 150 ft. per year. The deepest shaft in the United States, the Tamarack No. 5, although it is only 5308 ft. deep, actually approaches nearer to the center of the earth (4100 ft. below sea level, as against 3958 ft. , at St. John del Rey). The deepest workings in the Calumet & Hecla go down to 4600 ft. below sea level. The St. John del Rey is not only the deepest, mine in the world, but it also is worked by the oldest registered English mining company, which was organ-ized in 1830 to work a mine at a considerable dis-tance from this one. That mine proved unprofitable, and in 1837 operations were transferred to the. deposit now under discussion, where operations have been prac-tically continuous ever since.

This paper will focus on the background and rationalef or the formation of this partnership, the resulting operating changes and the productivity and cost benefits expected.IntroductionSince the deterioration of the world copper industry in 1981, the future of the Lomex and Cominco mines in the Highland Valley of British Columbia looked increasingly precarious. Despite the expansion of the Lomex mill complex in 1981 to one of the world's most cost-efficient copper and molybdenum concentrators, persistent low metal prices had made the remainder of the ore in the Lomex orebody marginally economic and had significantly foreshortened the expected life of the operation.Cominco had acquired the Bethlehem Copper assets in order to consolidate its ownership of the Valley orebody, and was feeding the Bethlehem concentrator with ore from the Valley orebody. In spite of the high grade and free-milling character of the Valley ore, profitability of the Cominco operation was severely restricted because of the limited capacity of the Bethlehem concentrator and its location high on the hillside above the orebody."

Open pit operators are facing a number of challenges in the area of blasting and blasting processes, such as wall control, quality of fragmentation, explosives consumption and vibration. Remaining financially viable is one of the most significant objectives for mining professionals as they work through the blasting challenges within the mining chain of processes. This objective is such a significant challenge, primarily due to the high consumption of materials and the direct consequences on the downstream processes in the mining work flow, including loading, hauling, crushing, milling and mineral concentration. This paper reviews and discusses a technique to achieve this objective, namely air-decking. The performance in a number of mines around the world is reviewed focusing on the economic contributions of air-deck blasting. Various scenarios are investigated and simulated, covering both conventional and air-deck blasting, using JKSimblast software. The scenarios explore a range of issues and found that optimum results could be achieved with a minimum amount of explosives. The results obtained from the simulations were verified with blasts at Rixs Creek Coal Mine, Australia. Based on the verification results the simulations were then modified to more accurately model the actual conditions and parameters on site and to ensure that the models derived meet the production and control requirements at the mine site. Ultimately, overall analysis and comparisons were applied to the outcomes of the conventional and air-decking blasts revealing a reduction in material consumption of around 25 per cent with consequential savings and up to a 30 per cent reduction in ground vibration.CITATION:Abdalla, M A, Laing, T and Hagan, P, 2012. THERE are regularly manufactured in the eleven Bessemer steel rail mills of the United States, 119 patterns* of steel rails, of 27 different weights per yard. This list does not include patterns which, although still largely inn use, are regarded by experts as obsolete, and which would swell the number to nearly 300; nor does it include all, the patterns for which rolls are kept on hand to fill a possible demand; nor does it include extra pattern,- rolled in one finishing groove by opening or closing the rolls so as to get different weights with the same contours. The list embraces only those separate patterns which are subject to current orders. How thoroughly modern these patterns are, is shown by the fact that of the whole 119, there are but five patterns of conspicuously bad shape; all the rest more or less completely illustrate the standard features,-a heavy bead,. light web and flanges, and a good angle :to hold the fish-plate. Sixty-two per cent. of the patterns have the "Chanute" head, which was not designed until 1874.† Sixty-four per cent. of the 119 patterns are embraced under five weights per yard,; three only of these vary from standard type; there am thus 76 patterns, all of them modern and standard, to represent five different weights, for which five patterns would perfectly answer. Of the 60-lb. rails, there is only one of the pear-head type, while a dozen of the bevelled head templets cannot be distinguished from each other * From all the works 188 patterns were sent to me as standard. Of these I found 119 different shapes and 69 duplicates. † Since this paper was read I have seen at the Bethlehem Iron. Works the templet of a 68-pound Lehigh Valley rail, with the bevelled head, usually called the "Chanute" head, and marked "Templet of 1872." This is shown on Plate II. I learn that iron rails, with bevelled heads, were rolled at Bethlehem prior to 1870.

Bureau of Mines engineers end others have endeavored to deter-nine a fundamental method for gauging the capacity of gas wells to deliver gas under different pressure conditions. Their studies show that for accurate gauging two factors must be determined: (1) The actual pressures at the face of the sand in the well (usually referred to as "at the sand"), acid (2) the relation between such pressures and the rates. of flow of c as through the sand. This paper, the first of a series, describes a method of attacking the problem of determining the actual pressures at the sand by means of observations of pressures and volumes at the well head.

The celebrations which took place in 1986 to mark South Australia's Jubilee 150 served to focus attention on all aspects of the State's heritage. Until that time the sites and relics of South Aus- tralia's early mines had been generally neglected. Marked by the ruins of enginehouses and littered with the remains of the massive technology of the Industrial Revolution, these sites have now been recognised as containing the threads of a fascinat- ing story. In the early days of settlement the economy of the Colony was based on land and farming. Droughts caused periods of economic depression which were alleviated by chance discoveries of gold, lead, silver, and copper ore. Some of the mines which were opened on the copper deposits were the largest in the world at that time and their names well-known throughout mining circles. Working by hand with primitive equipment, the early miners excavated vast networks of shafts and stopes often extending to great depths: at Moonta- Wallaroo Mines for example workings extended to 860 m below ground. Because of the presence of underground water, mining to these depths would not have been possible without the Cornish pumping engine. Operated by steam power these massive engines and their associated equipment were transported from Cornwall by clipper and delivered to the mines by bullock cart. At this time the engines were at the peak of their devel- opment and, although expensive to import and install, they were highly reliable: the engine oper- ating Hughes pump at Moonta worked continu- ously for sixty years without a major breakdown.

Conventional calculation of total system isothermal compressibility for a system containing a free gas phase involves, among other things, evaluation of the change of oil and gas formation volume factors and the gas in solution with pressure. Preferably, this information should be obtained from laboratory measurements made with particular oils and gases. Often, experimental measurements are not available. In this case, it is necessary to obtain pressure-volume-temperature relationships from general correlations such as those of Standing' for California oils. In order to speed estimates of compressibility, generalized plots have been prepared of the change of both oil formation volume factors and gas in solution, with pressure from Standing's correlations. A generalized plot for estimating the change in the two-phase (oil and gas) formation volume factor with pressure is also presented. Usually, the effect of gas dissolved in reservoir water upon the total system compressibility is neglected for gas saturated systems, due to the low solubility of gas in water. Results of this study indicate that the increase in total system compressibility caused by solution of gas in water is often as large as the compressibility of wafer, and can be magnitudes larger for low pressure systems. Generalized results for estimating the change of gas in solution in water with pressure are presented in tabular and graphical form. INTRODUCTION During the past decade, pressure build-up and drawdown techniques have gained an important place in reservoir engineering. Build-up and drawdown analyses are only two special applications of the broad field of transient fluid-flow theory. All solutions of transient fluid-flow problems contain a parameter called the total system isothermal compressibility. This property of fluids and porous rock is a measure of the change in volume of the fluid content of porous rock with a change in pressure, and it may vary considerably with pressure. Evaluation of total system isothermal compressibility is not difficult, but it is tedious and time-consuming. Often compressibilities are estimated roughly, or transient flow methods are neglected completely. The benefits of using accurate system compressibility in properly-executed build-up or drawdown analyses are: 1. Better planning of pressure build-ups may be achieved to avoid unnecessary loss of revenue due to excessively long shut-in periods, or to shut-in periods too short to yield useable data. 2. Better and more reliable estimates of static formation pressures for reserves estimates and rate performance estimates. 3. Reliable information for evaluation of well completion effectiveness, and planning and interpretation of well stimulation efforts. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the nature of the total system isothermal compressibility, and to present useful methods for estimation of compressibility, particularly for systems containing a gas phase. DEVELOPMENT Numerous publications have presented solutions to transient single-phase flow of slightly compressible fluids, stressing pressure build-up applications. In transient flow, a compressibility* term arises to permit volume content of fluids in porous rock to change as pressure changes. The basic nature of the compressibility term is usually taken for granted. Problems arise in practical applications of transient fluid theory because most published works consider only one flowing fluid—in an ideal porous system containing only one fluid. In 1956, Perrine2 presented an intuitive extension of single-phase flow pressure build-up methods to multiphase flow conditions. Later, Martin- established conditions under which Perrine's multiphase build-up method had a theoretical foundation. Perrine has shown that improper use of single-phase build-up analysis in certain multiphase flow situations can lead to gross errors in estimated static formation pressure, permeability and well condition. It is likely that, much pressure build-up data for oil wells should be analyzed on the basis of multiphase flow. For both single-phase and multiphase build-up analysis, the isothermal compressibility term in dimensionless time groups often should be interpreted as the total system compressibility. All real reservoirs contain one or more compressible fluid phases. In addition, rock compressibility can contribute in an important way to the total system compressibility. The proper total system compressibility expression may contain terms for compressibility of oil, gas, water, reservoir rock and terms for the change of solubility of gas in liquid phases.

In reheating quenched steel to remove part of the hardness, the softening effect has generally been considered to be a function of temperature and time. The temperature effect is well known, and long before pyrometers were heard of the blacksmith was able to do a good job of tempering, by rule-of-thumb methods and experience in judging temperatures. Modern conditions, which demand steel that will withstand the severest tests, require that the heat treatment be carried out with every possible precaution to secure the best results obtainable. Pyrometers and heat-treatment furnaces of many types are on the market and improvements are continually being made so that it is now possible to regulate the temperature in heat treatment very accurately. There is still a question regarding the time that the steel should be subjected to treatment. It is customary with all operators to insure the desired temperature throughout the specimen and it is generally supposed that a longer treatment of a hardened steel produces a further softening but there are few published figures showing the exact effect of time of treatment at constant temperature. A search of the literature disclosed several brief statements that the tempering effect was a function of both time and temperature, but in no case were any figures given. The opinion is very generally held that the well-know tempering colors are accurate indicators of the degree of tempering. This is disputed by Brearley (The Heat Treatment of Tool Steel, page 102) who states: It has been said that the result would be the same in respect to both hardness and other properties whether the colors were obtained by a shorter heating at a higher temperature or a longer heating at a lower one. This, to say the least, is a very doubtful conclusion, and is certainly not borne out by mechanical tests on oil-hardened and tempered motor car steels which, after tempering for periods varying from 15 min. to 2 hr., show no very great bifferences. The present investigation had for its object the obtaining of some definite data regarding the effect of time, which might serve as a guide to those engaged in the heat treatment of steel. Discussion of the paper of EMIL GATHMANN, presented at the San Francisco meeting September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1485 to 1492 H. W. LASH, Cleveland, 0.-I have found in practical experience that it is not objectionable to have some blow-holes in ingots. They enlarge during solidification and have a tendency to cause the steel to rise. If they are of fairly small size they weld up quite readily, especially where they are some distance from the surface. In that way a pipe, which is much more detrimental than a few small blow-holes, is prevented. There is a very great difference in the formation of blow-holes in steel. You get one condition in soft steel and entirely another condition in rail carbon, or the still higher grades. The figures that are given in Mr. Gathmann's paper I imagine are taken from the higher carbons, as it is very seldom that piping occurs in soft steel. J. W. This paper reviews the methods currently in use for estimating primary oil reserves and discusses the principles on which these methods are based. Particular emphasis is placed on how these methods change with the type of information available during the life cycle of an oil property. This paper contains various novel estimating methods and shortcuts heretofore unpublished. INTRODUCTION Estimating oil reserves is one of the most important phases of the work of a petroleum engineer since the solutions to the problems he deals with usually depend on a comparison of the estimated cost in terms of dollars, with the anticipated result in terms of barrels of oil. His recommendations to management regarding the best course of action are therefore normally based on the most favorable balance between these two. Specific engineering problems which require such a knowledge of recoverable oil reserves and a projection of future rates are: [a.] the exploitation and development of an oil reservoir; [b.] the construction of gasoline plants, pipelines and refineries; [c.] the division of ownership in unitized projects; [d.] the price to be paid in case of a sale or purchase of an oil property, and the magnitude of the loan which it will support; [e.] the proper depreciation rate for the investment in oil properties; and [f.] evaluation of the results of an exploration program. This discussion will be confined to the various methods and tools which are currently in use for estimating oil reserves to be obtained during the primary phase of an oil-producing reservoir and for a projection of the future production rates. Reserves which may be obtained by secondary recovery methods or fluid injection programs and gas and gas condensate reserves will not be discussed in this paper. Unfortunately, reliable oil reserve figures are most urgently needed during the early stages when only a minimum amount of information is available. Management's interest in the oil recovery from a property—aside from its use for accounting purposes—usually declines when the property approaches its economic limit, just at the time when the reliability of the estimates is at its best. To illustrate this general idea a chart is presented (Fig. 1) showing the three periods in the life of an imaginary oil property. Time is shown on the horizontal axis, while the cumulative production and estimated ultimate recovery are plotted vertically. No particular units are used and this schematical chart is not to scale. During the first period, before any wells are drilled on a property, any estimates will of necessity be of a very general nature, based on experience from similar pools or wells in the same area, and usually expressed in barrels per acre. The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. It is predicted that vast volumes of affected mine water will be produced by mining activities in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa. The potential environmental impact of this excess water is of great concern in a water-scarce country like South Africa. Research over a period of more than 10 years has shown that this water can be used successfully for the irrigation of a range of crops (Annandale et al., 2002)1. There is, however, continuing concern from the local regulators regarding the long-term impact that large-scale mine water irrigation may have on groundwater quality and quantity. Detailed research has been undertaken over the last three years to supplement the groundwater monitoring programme at five different pilot sites, on both virgin soils (greenfields) and in coalmining spoils. These sites range from sandy soils to very clayey soils. The research has included soil moisture measurements, collection of in situ soil moisture over time, long-term laboratory studies of the leaching and attenuation properties of different soils and the impact of irrigation on acid rock drainage processes, and in depth determination of the hydraulic properties of the subsurface at each of these sites, including falling head tests, pumping tests and point dilution tests. This has been supported by geochemical modelling of these processes to quantify the impacts. The results indicate that many of the soils have considerable attenuation capacities and that in the period of irrigation, a large proportion of the salts have been contained in the upper portions of the unsaturated zones below each irrigation pivot. The volumes and quality of water leaching through to the aquifers have been quantified at each site. From this mixing ratios have been calculated in order to determine the effect of the irrigation water on the underlying aquifers. Keywords: coalmines, irrigation, gypsiferous mine water.

THIS paper is written primarily for those who are familiar with the processes mentioned but who desire a further insight into some of the fundamental principles. It does not give a complete description of the various practices employed in the working of aluminum and its alloys, but presents a few illustrations of the essential respects in which aluminum differs from other common metals, and emphasizes the controlling factors of the processes under consideration. HEAT TREATING Certain aluminum alloys are capable of having their mechanical properties greatly altered by a heat-treatment process. The degree of this improvement may be illustrated by some typical properties of duralumin (Table 1). It is essential that the material be in the wrought condition in order to obtain maximum heat-treatment effects. [ ] In the case of duralumin, the process consists of heating the metal to a prescribed temperature and then quenching it. Immediately after quenching, the material is relatively soft though not as soft as in the annealed state. If allowed to stand at room temperature, the material changes, increasing in hardness and strength without loss of elongation, but at the expense of the plasticity. This action is very rapid at first, gradually diminishing in intensity and to all practical purposes being completed in about four days. This process of hardening is termed

The Northside Storage Tunnel (NST) is the largest tunnelling project ever undertaken in Sydney. The tunnel extends deep underground from the western bank of the Lane Cove river to the North Head sewage treatment plant (STP), with a branch tunnel from Scotts Creek connecting to the main tunnel under Tunks Park. The aim of the tunnel is to intercept wet weather overflows from four key points along the northernsuburbs ocean outfall sewer (NSOOS) and provide short-term storage and transfer of sewage to NorthHead STP for treatment prior to discharge to the ocean through the deep ocean outfall. The project was an ambitious undertaking by an alliance between the client Sydney WaterCorporationand the engineering firms of Montgomery Watson, Connell Wagner and Transfield to design andconstruct approximately 20 kilometres of tunnel, tunnel declines and shafts in just over three years. In order to achieve this tight timeframe construction of the NST has been undertaken simultaneously at seven construction sites located across the northern suburbs of Sydney. As with most tunnelling operations, tunnel boring machines (TBMÆs) and roadheaders dominated the excavation activities. Tunks Park and North Head STP are the major tunnelling sites. An access decline was excavated using roadheaders at both of these sites to facilitate tunnelling using TBMÆs. Three TBMÆs 3.8 m, 6.0 m and 6.3 m diameter) were launched from Tunks Park and one TBM (6.5 m diameter) was launched from North Head. At the overflow interception sites of Scotts Creek, Lane Cove River and Quakers Hat Bay two vertical shafts known as drop and access/ventilation shafts were constructed. These shafts would provide the linkage between the existing sewer and the tunnel. As their names suggest the drop shaft would convey the wet weather sewage overflows to the tunnel while the access/ventilation shaft would provide access during dry weather and ventilation during a filling event. The fourth overflow site of Tunks Park would use the tunnel decline as its link to the tunnel. Originally these shafts were to be excavated using the raise bore method. This technique however, is entirely dependent on the TBMÆs reaching the shaft locations at the specified time. This was not the case at two of the three shaft excavation locations and top down methods of excavation such as, a percussive cone fracturing (PCF), blind bore, mechanical excavation and drill and blast were investigated to ensure the project met its completion schedule. Traditionally project decisions are dominated by cost and schedule objectives. The contractual arrangement of the Alliance however, required that the objectives of safety, community and environment also be considered in any decision making process. Thus each of these top down methods of excavation were assessed against these five objectives. On considering all of these factors the use of explosives was considered to be the superior technique.

"In October of 1980, Fording's 15 000-ton capacity clean coal silo was put into operation. The silo was unique in that it was designed to allow the mass flow of material, coupled with a sophisticated computer-controlled dynamic loadout/weighing system.On May 1, 1982, an explosion, attributed to a methane buildup, devastated the top of the silo. .As a contingent plan to minimize the effect of the production loss the conveyance to the silo top was reconstructed and the silo' was back in operation by mid-June 1982, although the silo top was left open to prevent further methane buildup. As dust emissions occurred during loading ofthe silo, an extensive study was undertaken to establish dust control for the silo, while at the same time providing methane detection and control.The study, conducted for Fording by the Cambrian Engineering Group of Calgary, involved an extensive search and investigation of existing coal silos. The study concluded that there IS no universally accepted method of controlling methane emissions in coal silos.The study also produced a unique conceptual design for handling methane, while at the same time, protecting the environment . Fording's Clean Coal SiloThe silo, located at Fording Coal's Fording River metallurgical coal operation, is utilized for the storage and load out of cleaned thermally-dried metallurgical coal.The silo was constructed in 1979 and 1980 to reduce unit train loadout times and to facilitate the handling of “special shipments"" of coal. The silo went into operation in October 1980, under manual control and utilized computerized, automated loading by February 198I.The silo is 21 m in diameter and 76 m high, with a nominal capacity of IS 000 live tonnes. The coal storage portion of the silo is 21 m in diameter and 48 m high, utilizing 2 steep-angled hopper outlets allowing mass flow of the stored coal during train loading. In historic mining practice, typical thin liner support systems have been considered to comprise non-reinforced or mesh-reinforced shocrete linings. In the early 1990?s, development of alternate forms of liner systems was initiated in Canada which is now undergoing significant international growth in countries which sustain major mining activity. Now internationally designated as thin, spray-on liner systems, a wide spectrum of liner materials, ranging from liquid/liquid to liquid/solid component combinations, has become commercially available. This innovative family of products is characteristically identified as being rapidly deployable, capable of creating ultra-fast setting coverage over rock surfaces, and able to develop tenacious adhesion and pull strength capacities for resisting rock falls and movements. This paper presents a summary of current liner developments and use in principal mining districts world wide. Additionally, a database of material properties for principal product types used in mining and a review of common quality control testing procedures under development are provided. Such information is based upon recent Canadian and international efforts being taken to assess and develop user standards for the implementation of thin, spray-on liners as rock support in mines. This work is intended to continue for a period of years, with the eventual goal being to establish support and installation guidelines for mines based on quantifiable laboratory and field research.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine.
