It is well known that if copper that has been severely cold-worked by rolling (70-98 pct) is heated to high temperatures a small number of large grains are formed at the expense of the fine grained structure that appears upon primary recrystallization. Dahl and Pawlek,' Cook and Mac-Quarie,2 Ward,3 and Boas and Bowles4 have studied this phenomenon in copper. It has been reported as taking place with measurable velocities in the temperature range 700-1080". Boas and Bowles have reported that the time necessary for the transformation is of the order of days at 700°C. According to Ward3 the number of secondary grains which appear in OFHC copper decrease with increasing perfection of cubical alignment after primary recrystallization; also the perfection of cubical alignment increases with decreasing grain size prior to the final reduction. In this investigation two heats, A and B, of especially high purity copper (99.999 pct) supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co., were used. The behavior of samples prepared from the two heats was qualitatively very similar providing that the grain sizes established prior to the final reduction were about the same. We observed that in specimens prepared from bars which were relatively coarse grained prior to final reduction secondary recrystallization took place at a rapid rate at temperatures as low as 500°C. This is about 200-300°C lower than the temperature necessary to obtain fairly rapid transformation in OFHC copper. A 0.22 in. thick rectangular bar of lot B was cold-reduced 60 pct by straight rolling and given a penultimate annealing treatment at 250°C. Following this it was cold-reduced 90 pct and heated to various temperatures in the range 450-1040°C. The specimens were about 8 mils thick

Because mine haul trucks consume considerable quantities of fuel, they are ideal candidates for the adoption of cleaner and cheaper fuels like natural gas. Impressive fuel cost savings will be realized in regions where liquefied natural gas (LNG) has cost advantage to diesel fuel, while also providing significant reductions of air contaminants and greenhouse gases. High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) of natural gas utilizes the diesel cycle combustion process and therefore retains the diesel engine?s high performance and efficiency characteristics. HPDI has been demonstrated in on-road Class 8 trucks since 2001 accumulating almost 10 million kilometres to date. The supply of LNG fuel will be an essential parallel aspect in the introduction of HPDI to mining. LNG can be transported to site as diesel is today, or may be produced on or near mine operations that have access to methane sources or pipelines.

Sizing devices used commercially are unfortunately not 100% efficient, the splits that can be obtained are usually inferior to the results obtained in the laboratory. Often the capital and operating costs of equipment capable of high sizing efficiency cannot be justified by the economics or requirements of the process. To reconcile the desired sizing efficiency needed to obtain optimum process requirements with the sizing efficiency of equipment economically practical, it is often necessary or desirable to predict the gradation and weight splits of the products obtained based on the expectant efficiency of the contemplated sizing device or method. The less efficient the sizing device one must employ, the more important it is to know the results that may be expected for the establishment of the optimum flow sheet and the more difficult it becomes to estimate the results accurately. Air classification equipment which sizes materials by opposing the drag force created by an air stream acting on a particle with a combination of gravitational, inertial or centrifugal forces are substantially less efficient than, for example, a laboratory sieve analysis. Air classifiers allow oversize material to contaminate the fine fraction and leave undersize material in the coarse fraction. The techniques employed to predict the gradation and weight splits obtained from air classification outlined below are adaptable to other sizing devices less than 100% efficient such as screens, sifters and wet classifiers.

At present there exist few engineering calculations and principles to determine exclusion zones for personnel in the vicinity of underground explosive storage areas. This paper is written to encourage discussion and proposes a method to determine the impact of a blast wave through scientific principles. Then, criteria to determine an ‘exclusion zone’ need to be identified.There has been much work on identifying the pressure rise and the energy of explosive detonations underground but little to develop standards in criteria that can be used to identify exclusion zones for useful design of underground infrastructure. The author presents the newest ways of calculating the pressure rise and energy (impulse) of detonations and puts forward some criteria to be used in the identification of personnel exclusion zones to spark peer review and discussion of these criteria towards developing standards for engineering design.Smith and Sapko (2005) used Sach’s scaling laws to develop a relationship for both pressure rise and impulse, which incorporated factors for intersections. Intersections will have a large bearing on the peak pressure and the energy of the blast wave and needs to be incorporated. Silvestrini, Genova and Leon Trujillo (2009) developed the scaling laws with an energy concentration factor to predict blast propagation in partially confined geometries and together the author has proposed equations for determining the peak side pressure and the impulse in a tunnel. Given the weight and type of the explosive, the average cross-section of the tunnel complex and the number and type of intersections encountered, the pressure and impulse can be calculated.The military has carried out many investigations as to the influence of blast pressure and impulse on the human body. Lung damage, ear damage and velocity knock down are three of the criteria standards that are presented as possible methods of determining exclusion zones around an underground explosives magazine. The author suggests that the velocity curves presented by Bowen, Fletcher and Richmond (1968) could be an acceptable method of determining an exclusion zone as it incorporates the side pressure and the energy of a blast wave to determine the ability of the wave to knock down personnel.CITATION:Lovitt, M B, 2014. The purpose of this paper is to present the key elements in a system; study of the electrical system for a timing and/or tilling operation. The ability of an electrical system to function in a reliable fashion at its proper levels is essential for an operation to be successful. A system study consists of a load study for determining the capability of the electrical network to provide power to the various loads and a short circuit study for determining the capability of the electrical protective equipment to properly protect against fault conditions. The sequence of events in a system study is data acquisition, determining the electrical parameters and analyzing the ability of the system to meet these requirements. If the system is small, herd calculations will be the manner in which the study will be conducted; if it is large then commuters will be used. A load study has as its objectives the determination of the capability and reliability of the source of power, transformers and conductors to satisfactorily deliver power to the loads at an acceptable voltage level. The hydraulic movement of coal is here defined as the movement of all sizes of coal in pipes and open flumes, by gravity and against gravity. It is not restricted to coal which is in slurry form. In other words, it is not crushed to a size in the 8 to 20 mesh size range. The top size could be as high as 12 inches. The dewatering of coal which is transported hydraulically is carried out to restore the coal to a suitable form for further cleaning, or for transportation by other methods. The process involves complete separation of all the coal, wood and rock from the water so that the water can be recycled without undue damage to pumps, pipes and monitors.

The annulus thickness, for bolts anchored with resin, effects the systems final performance. Recent developments in the manufacturing process of these support systems, coupled with improved resin characteristics, have resulted in design changes to minimize hole drilling requirements and reduce resin usage. The amount of resin to properly anchor a 7/8-SRD (Special Rolled Dimensions) bolt in a 25.4 mm (1-in) diameter hole has been reduced to about one-third of the resin required to anchor a No. 7 rebar bolt (22 mm (7/8-in) diameter) traditionally installed in a 35 mm (1-3/8-in) diameter borehole. More importantly, laboratory and field tests, indicate that higher bond strengths and anchorage capacities can be realized with reduced annulus systems. These factors have a direct bearing on reinforcement efficiency and subsequent roof support performance.

The adhesion of Leptospirillum ferrooxidans bacterial cells onto the sulfide minerals pyrite and chalcopyrite was evaluated using two different physical-chemical approaches; thermodynamic and extended DLVO theory. For the parameters incorporated into calculations, the zeta potentials and contact angles of powdered solids and bacterial cells were acquired experimentally. The Hamaker constants essential for Lifshitz-van der Waals inter-action calculations were calculated following two different methods: macroscopic and microscopic. Adsorption tests were carried out at physiologic conditions to estimate the amount of cells adsorbed onto a mineral surface and the extent of alteration of that mineral surface in biobeneficiation. The free energy of adhesion was found to be negative for both minerals, indicating that the adhesion is energetically favored and preferred. The interaction energy diagrams of the total interacting force was also negative for the cases where the particles were charged oppositely; in the remaining cases, the total force was attractive after overcoming an energetic barrier caused by the repulsive electrostatic forces. Under the conditions of the adsorption test, the experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical; this suggests that the physical-chemical forces are crucial for bacterial adhesion.

Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. Moving ground in the mining industry is almost inevitable; however comprehensive awareness of these movements is necessary to mitigate risk. Monitoring of displacements caused by mining is a key tool for geomechanical risk management. Good monitoring may prevent unexpected failures and protect personnel and equipment. Many displacement monitoring techniques are available, however not all are reliable, accurate, and cost effective. Close range photogrammetry (CRP) is a monitoring method with high accuracy, reliability, and cost effectiveness; and has the ability to measure places that are inaccessible. In CRP, some series of photos are taken in different positions with different angles at different time intervals depending on the displacement rates. These photos are processed using PhotoModeler software and 3D models are made. By comparing 3D models, displacements can be measured. This method has been demonstrated at the Freeport-McMoRan Safford Mine in Arizona. A fault related instability in part of the pit is reactive to mining, and provided an opportunity to compare results between traditional monitoring methods and CRP. In this project, multiple series of photos were taken at different times using a Canon 5D Mark III digital camera, then PhotoModeler software used to make 3D models for each specific measurement event. Movement rates were determined by comparing different 3D models. These results are then compared to results of other monitoring methods to validate the CRP displacement method.

AS an outgrowth of its spodumene recovery operation at Kings Mountain, N. C., Foote Mineral Co. has been recovering a heavy mineral by-product. Foote leased this idle plant in 1951, reactivated it, using a new spodumene recovery process, and purchased plant and properties in October 1951. While the operation at Kings Mountain is primarily concerned with the production of spodumene concentrate, pilot plant work determined that the pegmatites also contained heavy minerals including cassiterite. Plans were made to recover the heavy minerals as a by-product and the flowsheet incorporated these facilities when the mill was modified for the new spodumene recovery process. The orebodies consist of spodumene, feldspar, quartz and mica. Apatite, tourmaline, and beryl are present in small quantities. The wall rock is pre- dominantly hornblende shist. The heavy minerals, including cassiterite, columbite, pyrrhotite, monazite, pyrite, and rutile represent about 0.2 pct of the ore. The fine-grained heavy minerals are disseminated throughout the dikes, apparently unassociated with the spodumene. The pegmatites are quarried and secondary breakage is by mud-capping and block-holing. Power shovels load into trucks transporting the ore to a coarse ore bin. A Telesmith 10x36-in. apron feeder delivers the ore to an 18x36 in. Traylor Jaw crusher adjusted to discharge -3 in. product to a primary conveyor. The conveyor delivers to a 4x5-ft Tyrock single deck vibrating screen using 3/4 in. cloth. The screen undersize is elevated to the crushed ore bin. Screen oversize goes to an Allis-Chalmers Hydrocone Crusher fitted with 4 in. concave and set to deliver approximately 66 pct minus 3/4 in. The crusher discharge returns to the primary conveyor. The crushing and screening installation has a capacity of about 60 tons per hour. Spirals The crushed ore is delivered at a rate of 350 tons per day to two 6x8-ft Hardinge Pebble Mills, equipped with 20 mesh Ton-Cap trommel screens. The screen oversize is pumped to a 12-in. hydroclone for primary desliming. The hydroclone underfl spirals. There is no heavy mineral loss in the hydro-clone overflow. The spirals bank consists of eight 5-turn Model 24-A Humphreys Spirals. The top port and the last four ports of each spiral are blanked, the remaining nine port splitters are adjusted to remove about 5 pct feed weight. The heavy mineral rougher concentrates are upgraded on a Deister Overstrom table. The spiral concentrates contain approximately 4 pct heavy mineral, and the spiral reject, which goes to another section of the plant for spodumene recovery, contains about 0.03 pct heavy mineral. There is an interesting feature in the spirals installation. An adjustable splitter mounted on the discharge boxes splits out a mica fines product containing very little heavy mineral. The mica product is cleaned by spiralling and screening. Thus the spirals recover two products; mica, and a heavy mineral rougher concentrate. Table Treatment The rougher spiral concentrate goes to a Deister Plato table, modified to receive a Deister-Overstrom No. 6 rubber cover with sand riffles. The table is operated with a 5/8 in. stroke, 270 strokes per minute, and a slope of 1/2 in. per ft from feed to tailings side. There is no slope adjustment from motion to concentrate end. Wash water consumption is relatively high, since the large spodumene grains tend to report with the fine heavy minerals. A middling band about 4 in. wide is maintained in order to produce clean concentrate. The middling, representing about 10 pct of table feed, is recirculated by air-lift. A band of concentrate grade coarse spodumene occurs just below the middling. This is removed and delivered to concentrate storage. The table tailing, containing approximately 0.7 pct heavy minerals, is returned to the spodumene feed preparation circuit. The heavy mineral table concentrates are approximately 45 pct cassiterite, 33 pct columbite, 14 pct pyrrhotite and 8 pct monazite, together, with some rutile, pyrite, and copper from blasting wire. Concentrate is collected at 24 hour intervals. and dried. If the concentrate remains in wet storage appreciably longer surface oxidation takes place which seriously interferes with the subsequent magnetic separation process. About 150 lb of heavy mineral concentrate is produced per 24 hours and shipped to the company's plant at Exton, Pa. for final separation into tin and columbium concentrates.

Currently raw brown coal is fired in the Latrotx; 'ahcc th,iki~, Lanying with it two major penalties, (a) boiler efficiency of 65 - 70 per cent (in terms of GCV), (b) much higher boiler cost than for black coal. Drying the coal, in energy-efficient, and cost-efficient manner, opens the way to efficiencies of order 88 per cent and enables the lower cost black coal type boilers to be used. With the higher boiler efficiency goes much higher combustion temperatures and the effect of this on radiative heat transfer is a major factor in reducing boiler cost. In a fluidised-bed combustor the temperature is controlled to 800C - 900C. In a pulverised fuel combustor higher temperatures are however achieved and can increase boiler fouling due to the salt content of the coal. This is a problem which needs to be solved. Victoria has the prospect of lifting efficiency from 28/29 per cent to 35 per cent, of reducing carbon dioxide output correspondingly and reducing cost of power stations. So far as gasification is concerned, efficient removal of liquid water from the coal is important to the overall efficiency.

JOHN HAMRIC: Our next speakers are Richard Ghent, manager of environmental health and safety for CF Industries, Hardee Phosphate Complex, in Wauchula, Florida. Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

Optimal cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters in open-pit mine design because it defines the ore and waste and thus determines the maximum net present value possible from the mining operation. Although the algorithm presented by Lane (Choosing the optimum cut-off grade. Colorado school of Mines Quarterly, vol. 59, no. 4, 1964. pp. 811-829) is the most common one in the literature, it does assume constant capacities of the mine, processing, and refinery. In this paper, Lane's original algorithm has been modified to consider variable processing capacities in order to determine the optimal cut-off grade in open-pit mines. The new algorithm proposed here is compared to both Lane's original algorithm and to a previous modification that incorporated rehabilitation costs into the cut-off grade estimation. The algorithm proposed here that permits variable processing capacities is shown to be superior for the determination of optimal cut-off grade to both these previous versions. In addition, a computer-based program was developed in Microsoft Office Excel© to calculate the optimal cut-off grade as proposed here.

A diesel particulate matter analyzer capable of direct, real-time measurement of engine exhaust particulate is necessary to effectively institute source control technology currently being used on diesel equipment and to ensure that the control measures are working. To investigate the potential of a differential pressure monitor to measure diesel particulate matter in undiluted exhaust, samples were collected from three different diesel engines-Kubota, Isuzu, and Deutz-running under 12 different RPM and load scenarios. These measurements were compared to elemental carbon concentrations in the sampled exhaust as determined by using the NIOSH 5040 analytical method. Elemental carbon is used as a surrogate measurement for diesel particulate matter. The results of the two data sets were then compared using a linear regression analysis. The coefficient of determination (or R2) was calculated to be 0.98, 0.94, and 0.74 for the Kubota, Deutz, and Isuzu engines, respectively. R2 values of this magnitude indicate that this method can be successful in estimating elemental carbon emissions in the engines tested. In addition, for replicate samples, the coefficient of variation ranged from 7.1% to 10.2% with an average of 8.5%. These data indicate that this method could prove useful to mechanics as they work to maintain engines and DPM control technologies.

Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. On the contrary, the rocks associated with the lode are more simply explained as highly metamorphosed sediments, in some cases modified by water introduced from surrounding rocks into zones of strong folding and faulting. As a corollary, a metamorphicsedimentary origin for the lode material, either as a concentrated sulphide deposit, or somewhat disseminated...

A Usiminas, alinhada a esses avanços, tem realizado estudos visando obter novos produtos de alta resistência mecânica que possibilitem a redução do peso dos veículos e diminuição do consumo de combustível, além do aumento da segurança. Para novos projetos de veículos, como fator de melhoria do desempenho dos materiais de alta resistência, têm assumido destaque especial nos aços Dual Phase, principalmente naqueles do grau 1000MPa, as características de expansão de furo, em função da correlação com a vida em fadiga e o comportamento à fratura. Esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar uma das etapas do ciclo de desenvolvimento de um aço Dual Phase do grau 1000MPa com características de expansão de furo maior que 20%. O trabalho avaliou três conceitos diferentes de liga submetidos a tratamentos térmicos específicos. Os resultados obtidos permitiram retroalimentar o ciclo posterior do desenvolvimento, no qual resultados positivos foram alcançados.

Joseph H. Birman (Chairman, Dept. of Geolcgy, Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif.) Many thanks to J. L. Gillson for so comprehensive a survey of the titanium sand deposits of the world. Over the past two years, the writer studied rather carefully some of the Cretaceous ilmenite deposits in New Mexico and Colorado, including the Sanostee deposit shown in Gillson' s map, Fig. 6. The deposits were geologically mapped and sampled, surveyed by magnetometer, and the Sanostee deposit was drilled. Moat of the genetic interpretations made by Gillson concerning the recent sedimentary ilmenites can be clearly read in the Cre-taceous deposits in New Mexico. The deposits are in marine regressive members of the Mesaverde group. The deposits trend within a few degrees of N 55° W and persistence of this trend through both distance and time (the deposits are in different members of the Mesaverde group) implies that the deposits are offshore bar accumulations. Heavy mineral content ranges from about 10 pct to more than 50 pet. Thicknesses are from 4 ft to as much as 20 ft, widths range from 150 to 600 ft, and lengths range from a few thousand feet to a few miles. All are locally or completely overlain by carbonaceous shale and thin coal. The deposits are strongly altered, and from X-ray diffraction the principal titanium alteration product appears to be anatase. Drilling of the Sanostee deposit shows that the alteration is not related to the present erosion surface but took place at the site of deposition and before burial by the overlying sediments. Iron oxide derived from the alteration cements the grains and is the chief coloring agent in the immediately overlying shales. In the Sanostee deposit, there is virtually no feldspar, the gangue mineral being almost exclusively quartz. Sorting is excellent, but the quartz grains are subangular to angular. Petrographic examination reveals that the angularity is not due to overgrowths. Therefore, short distance transport is implied. The mineralogical composition suggests a low relief granitic terrane as the source area. Feldspar may have been decomposed by weathering at the source, but an alternative preferred by the writer is that each of the deposits represents a long-term concentration site (for example a large sand bar) which was continually being deprived of light minerals by wave action and selective transport. Feldspar may have been mechanically reduced in size more quickly than the quartz, and thus its rate of removal may have exceeded that of quartz. Concentration of heavy minerals would thus occur until the marine regression removed the zone of maximum wave energy from the site. Chemical alteration would then become the most important process until burial by encroaching swamp deposits.

Some years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.' The life of dies was considered in relation to. the casting temperature, the material used for the die and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mechanism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines. Importance of Heat Checking Heat checks in steel are the source of trouble in many industries besides that of die casting. Every shop where metals are subjected to hot working is searching for improvement and hoping for a cure. The development of a material of sufficient strength to be used as a die and yet devoid of the property of heat checking would be a godsend to many shops and many industries. The need for thorough study and research on the subject is evidenced by the wide variety of hot-working die steels on the market. It is peculiar, but true, that in practically every case the maker of the steel can give concrete evidence to prove his contention that his type of hot-working die steel is as good as or better than any other. A number of steel companies have several hot-working die steels from which choice can be made to fit a particular set of requirements. Possibly to expect one material to be universally the best hot-working die steel is unreasonable. In some hot-working operations, as in drop forging, the die must have great toughness to withstand the stresses developed; in other operations, as in hot piercing or punching, resistance to erosion at high temperatures, possibly defined as strength and hardness at elevated temperatures, is required. In still others, as in die casting, only sufficient hardness to resist scoring between moving surfaces is required, whereas the resistance to sudden changes in temperature must be at a maximum.
