THE New Cornelia Copper Co. is mining and treating a 'monzonite " porphyry" copper deposit that is all hard rock. The oxidized surface shell, which constitutes the leachable part of the orebody, is measurably more resistent to crushing and comminution processes than is the underlying sulfide portion. The siliceous ribs running through the whole orebody are harder to crush than the main mass and there is no soft crumbly material to furnish the large volume of primary fines that features the crusher feeds of most other porphyry properties. New Cornelia ore reaches the primary crushers with a greater. proportion of large 'pieces. Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.

AT a recent meeting of the Utah Section. A.I.M.E., P. D. Nielson, general plant superintendent of the new Geneva steel plant at Provo, Utah, spoke on "General Operations of the Geneva Plant." Mr. Nielson explained that the plant was located at Provo, Utah, on account of railroad facilities, the proximity of coal, iron, and limestone, and the nearness of water for operating the plant. Water probably was the most important item in making the decision.

Blasting represents the highest risk of any surface coal mining activity that could result in injury and/or property damage off the permit area. In addition, blasting related issues e.g. flyrock, vibrations, air blast, etc., are responsible for a large percentage of citizen complaints. Thorough and consistent regulation of individuals certified to conduct blasting by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement in Federal Program states and on Indian Lands under Federal jurisdiction is vital, as it serves to: facilitate coal production to meet the nation’s energy needs; protect people and property on and adjacent to Federal mining permits; form a basis for states to grant reciprocity certificates to Federal blasters; and be a positive example to primacy states. OSM issues Federal blaster certificates for blasting on Federal surface coal mine permits. The certification program includes experience, training and testing components similar to many of the states. But where a state program may focus on the specific blasting applications within its boundary, the OSM certificate requires a very diverse test to cover all potential blasting applications and products across the nation. Therefore, the Federal certificate is a good surface mining credential for blasters anywhere in the United States.

The optimisation of a metallurgical plant requires two kinds of sampling systems. The first provides samples to follow process changes, so in due time actions to maintain key parameters within pre-established specifications can be applied. The second provides composite samples at the end of a working shift to demonstrate that valuable constituents sent to the plant went to either a final concentrate or to the tailings in a logical, expected proportion. Contrary to what many experts may claim, these two kinds of sampling requirements are incompatible and cannot be fulfilled using the same sampling systems; this is because the required samples have completely different objectives. A process control sample is an instantaneous sample with increments taken at short intervals, and the objective is to know where the process is at any given time. Excellent accuracy is not a must, however good precision is recommended since a possible process correction may need to be made. Online analysers fed with in-stream stationary cutters or other kinds of in-stream or by-stream probes can do well for such a mission. A composite sample for metallurgical accounting with increments collected over a long period of time, for which excellent accuracy and good precision are both required, must be generated by sophisticated and extremely well-maintained cross-stream sampling stations. The use of process control sampling systems to achieve good metallurgical accounting has been promoted by several manufacturers of sampling equipment around the world; it is a grave mistake that is misleading top management and a practice that should be scrutinised and preferably eliminated. This paper presents a case study of two major Australian infrastructure projects that used digital engineering to facilitate design delivery: WestConnex Project (Rozelle Interchange), and Sydney Metro West (Eastern Tunnelling Package). The paper presents project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle.

INTRODUCTION Kerckhoff-2 is a 140 MW underground hydro-electric project designed and owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and constructed between May, 1980 and May, 1983 by Auburn Constructors. The project is located in the western foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 30 miles northeast of Fresno, California, and develops the power potential of the lower San Joaquin River and its tributaries between the existing Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes. The Kerckhoff-2 Project consists of project roads, adits, and access tunnels, service tunnels, power tunnels, powerhouse, tailrace tunnel surge shaft, buss shaft, intake structure, discharge structure, and switchyard. In the 1920s, the Kerckhoff 1 project, consisting of a dam, reservior, tunnel, and 34 MW powerhouse, was built in the same general area as Kerckhoff-2. The tunnel was constructed by conventional methods, and was left unlined. In time, other projects were built upstream, allowing the flow of the San Joaquin River to be regulated. The Kerckhoff 2 project is designed to harness that regulated flow, providing an additional 140,000 ON of power. Kerckhoff 2 will be the primary power plant; Kerckhoff I will produce power whenever the flow rate exceeds 4,800 cubic feet. The new power tunnel is built along the east side of the San Joaquin River between Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes, parallel to the existing tunnel but extending approximately one mile further downstream.

In lightweight metal processing such as aluminum (AI) and magnesium (Mg), metal cleanliness is a crucial process parameter for refining, part manufacturing and recycling in order to obtain high quality parts and products. In this paper, techniques for cleanliness evaluation of molten AI and Mg using ultrasonic probes with clad steel buffer rods having high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are presented. Due to the high SNR of the ultrasonic probes used, backscattered ultrasonic signals from inclusions, which may be oxide films and/or particles, in molten Mg and those from silicon carbide particles, having an average size of 50f.Ull, added in molten AI are successfully detected with reflection configurations of pulse-echo and/or pitch-catch modes at an ultrasonic frequency of 10 MHz. In addition, relative cleanliness evaluation of molten Al and Mg is demonstrated. In order to establish the procedure and to investigate the optimum system configurations for cleanliness evaluation of molten metals, particle flow simulation system using water and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles has been constructed. Counting the number and measuring the size distribution of the PVC particles, having an average diameter of 128um, suspended in water with the PVC volume concentrations of 5ppm and 10ppm are performed with ultrasonic pitch-catch mode. The counted numbers of particles by the presented method and system have good agreement with the calculated results with a count error of less than 10% or two counts. Based on the results obtained with water simulation experiments, the prototype system for cleanliness evaluation of molten Mg by counting and sizing inclusions has been developed. Each day group speaking plays an important part in making or marring success, and the engineering profession often provides this opportunity and requirement. An ability to speak effectively develops courage, poise, confidence, and prestige for the speaker. The technical man cannot be reluctant to face an audience. He is often called upon to do this in presence of employees, supervisors, and other groups. His ability to speak effectively is as much a requirement as the fundamentals of his profession. The three fundamentals of effective speaking are: (1) Enthusiasm and Confidence. These are joined because of their close relation. (2) Preparation. This includes knowledge of the subject. (3) Presentation. By this is meant the features of delivery.

A demonstration plant for QSL technology with a continuous through-put of up to 10 t/h concentrate has been in operation at the Berzelius smelter, Duisburg, Germany since early 1981. In the QSL-process, both oxidation and reduction steps are performed in a single horizontal long cylindrical reactor. In the present demo-reacior, 2.5 M diameter by 22 M long, these steps are separated by a low partition wall with an underflow opening, to prevent backmixing of slag. -Tests on a variety of concentrates, including high-lead Missouri-type material and lower grades, have shown recoveries and consumables indicating very attractive economics. Investment cost estimates further enhance the economic attractiveness. Environmental protection afforded by the QSL system is a major advantage. The process has proven its reliability and versatility and is now ready for commercialization. Continued test work, including smelting secondary lead materials, is planned.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

Miami Oölite limestone is the only significant construction mineral in southeastern Florida. Its source area coincides with that of rapid urban expansion. Two-thirds of the existing resource is already unavailable because of development. Land-use conflicts place future availability of limestone in jeopardy. However, a sufficient limestone resource to meet demand for many years is present if its extraction is not restricted. Adverse environmental effects of quarrying Miami Oölite are not severe; land values often increase following quarrying. Future availability depends upon--(l) achieving uniformity of Federal, State, county, and municipality statutory requirements governing quarry operations; (2) setting aside specific land areas for future quarrying; and (3) cooperative planning to provide for land utilization upon completion of quarrying.

A thorough improvement in mine safety is contingent on many factors that require scientific decision-making for selection and prioritizing of important factors for safety improvement. Their analysis using an established scientific method can improve mines’ safety conditions and assist the administration for informed decision-making. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. In the evaluation index, 27 significant factors of safety are identified and categorized into 7 criteria. The proposed evaluation system analyzes all indicators according to Pakistan’s current mine safety situation and their significance for potential safety improvement in the future. Results reveal that current safety practices are outdated due to a lack of mechanization in the mining industry and minimal capability of the management to achieve the desired safety targets. Appropriate safety policies and safety education are missing in the daily working environment. The lack of overseeing the execution of safety operations and the lack of ambition and strong work ethic workers contribute to the paucity of mines’ safety conditions. The prevention and control systems to manage risks and hazard are not in place, and the working environment in mines remain difficult. Therefore, to have enhanced mine safety, important factors can be addressed in chronological order, as presented in this paper. The proposed methodological approach can be applied to other prioritization applications to analyze the indicators and determine the appropriate management strategies.

The pre-fabricated outdoor rooms are often utilised near the mines and construction sites for office purposes. The paper has presented modelling and simulation results of the integration of commercially available glass coated photovoltaic (PV) energy technology and solar ventilation technology into a pre-fabricated outdoor room. The pre-fabricated outdoor room has been setup at Concordia University, Montréal for full scale testing of the glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation. The computer simulation model has been developed for PV modules installed on a double wall wooden frame in an outdoor room based on its preliminary field testing. The testing apparatus was a wooden frame assembly of double wall with solar air ventilation: two adjacent glass coated PV modules, air column and plywood board filled with polystyrene. The measurement data collected from various sensors were: solar intensity, ambient air temperature, room air temperature, electric power, surface temperatures of PV modules and plywood board, air velocities and air temperatures in the air column. The enhancement in the air velocity of the air column was achieved with an exhaust fan fixed in an outdoor room. The simulation model is used to perform the two dimensional energy analyses with applied one dimensional solution of steady state heat conduction equations. The simulation model is based on conjugate heat exchange paths with network boundary conditions of convection, radiation heat exchange and solar air ventilation heat transport. The model parameters are based on measured values of ambient air temperature, room air temperature, air velocity at outlet of air column in double wall, electric power and available solar intensity. The model has predicted fairly well energy performance of glass coated PV modules with solar air ventilation installed on a wooden frame. The model is also useful for predicting heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) requirements for the pre-fabricated outdoor rooms.

THE purpose of testing is to determine whether the material in question is identical in all essential respects with similar material which has given satisfactory service. The most common method of securing such information is to select samples as representative of the entire material and subject them to destructive tests. As the welding industry grew, service data were accumulated and tests of welds took on new significance. New tests were devised and old tests modified so as to be more pertinent to welding. Moreover, in some cases the generally accepted procedure of testing by sampling is not accorded the same degree of confidence when applied to welds as in the usual applications. Thus, in instances where great hazard would be involved should the material fail, means of non-destructive testing have been sought with favorable results. Accordingly, tests used today may be divided into two groups, destructive and non-destructive tests.

"Selection of a blasting agent for optimum performance is based on many variables. Often, a decision is made with regard to product cost and field testing. Defining optimum performance can be difficult, since downstream effects of fragmentation on loading, haulage, processing, and energy consumption are not immediately clear. Many operations are beginning to optimize their blasting programs “on the bench,” by utilizing information generated downstream at the loader and/or crusher. During the evaluation of a blasting agent, factors such as velocity of detonation, gas production, and sensitivity are typicallyconsidered. Alternatively, brisance (“the shattering power of an explosive material distinguished from its total work capacity”1) is not. Brisance affects the immediate area surrounding a borehole. Fractures produced here during the shock phase of detonation are believed to have an important effect on rock movement and fragmentation. "
