IN 1938 Ralston4 reviewed the many attempts to find a satisfactory collector for the separation of cassiterite from its ores and in 1944 Dean and Ambrose2 summarized some further attempts. Generally, soaps and amines are effective but nonselective collectors. We have discovered that reagents containing either the polar group -SO4- or _S03- are excellent collectors for cassiterite and promise to be selective.1 The response to these reagents of cassiterite and of minerals commonly associated with it was studied, using the captive-bubble technique. Using these fundamental data, the practicability of separation and concentration of tin was investigated by flotation tests in a 2000gram Denver cell. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Reagents All inorganic reagents were of Analar grade. The preparation and purification of sodium cetyl sulphate, cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide, laurylamine and cetylamine have been previously described.5 The other collectors were commercial surface-active agents, which were used without purification. Tests Captive-bubble Tests and Cylinder Flotation Tests have been previously described.5-10 The full lines shown in the figures relating solution composition to contact (flotation) distinguish solutions in which contact (flotation) is possible from those in which it is not. The curve is derived by successive approximation and the accuracy is ±0.2 pH units and ± 5 mg. per liter of collector or depressant. Solution compositions for which it was shown experimentally that contact or flotation is possible are marked by a circle, those for which it is not possible, by a cross, and those for which it is doubtful by a cross within a circle. It is assumed that at all other solution compositions within (without) the curve, contact or flotation is possible (not possible). After testing in the collector solution, the mineral was removed, washed, and tested by the captive-bubble method in water, or floated in a cylinder with frother only. In this way the composition of solutions in which a mineral was conditioned but in which properties of the collector solution prevented contact or flotation can be defined. The composition of solutions in which conditioning was possible lie between the full and broken curve, and the experimental results are indicated by a square. The curves show the limits of composition of solutions in which flotation in a cell would be possible but many factors other than those considered in these tests determine recovery and grade of a given mineral in practice. The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. Electricity supply constraints in SA are increasingly challenging mines to operate more energy efficiently without reducing production output. Mining compressed air systems are well known to be operated inefficiently and are also a major power consumer. Two available and proven technologies can be applied on new and existing mines to replace or and optimise available compressed air facilities and achieve meaningful reductions in electrical power consumption; ? Hydro powered drilling and mining is significantly more energy efficient than compressed air and provides drilling rates that are twice as fast. ? Stope drilling systems using compressed-air or water drills allow further energy savings. The technologies are discussed and a broad strategy to selectively apply these them together is presented.

Longwall systems are inflexible in layout, intolerant of disruption and represent a substantial investment. It is therefore essential drat all understanding of the likely strata behaviour and support requirements is obtained prior to panel development. For many tears rock mechanics engineers have applied numerical modelling based kill finite element techniques to the design of the support and layout of underground excavations. Whilst such design methodology has worked well in civil engineering and hard rock situations, it has been less reliable when applied to excavation design in the soft rocks of the coal measures. This lack of reliability has been identified largely as being the result of the utilisation of unsatisfactory input data, This paper describes the results of an ongoing research programme at the University of Nottingham in which a novel rock mass rating system known as the UK Coal Mine Classification system was developed to enable the prediction of the strata properties that are required as input parameters for use in numerical modelling of the deformation of soft rocks around excavations such as roadways and longwall faces in coal mines. The paper describes the development of the system. the way in which classifications are applied to derive input data for numerical models and gives two case studies ill which deformations and stress re-distributions around coal mine excavations have been simulated by numerical modelling using the FLAC finite difference code.

The area between Merrygoen and Digilah is located on a structural high that separates the Sydney Basin from the Great Artesian Basin, and hence the stratigraphic succession of younger rocks overlying the basement is relatively thin. The stratigraphy is briefly described and it is shown that fluvial sedimentation prevailed from Upper Permian through to Middle Jurassic times. Flint clays occur in the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic but only those in the Jurassic appear to have commercial value at present. The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of the flint clays are discussed.

Viscosities of slags constitute an important physical property needed for an understanding of the mass transfer phenomena in metallurgical processes. Viscosity is also the key that leads to a better understanding of the structure of slags. It is well known that the viscosities of silicate slags decrease with the addition of basic oxides due to the breaking of the silicate network. The measurements of slag viscosities often pose experimental challenges, especially to the choice of materials. The keynote lecture takes up the experimental problems and the various techniques adopted. Dynamic viscosity measurement, as a powerful tool towards an understanding of the kinetics of some high temperature reactions, is brought out. A number of semi-empirical models have been developed to estimate the slag viscosities in the case of multi component slags. A critical survey of these models is presented in the lecture. Earlier models by Riboud et al., Urbain et al. and Mills et al. have been developed further into a new generation of models. Some of the current important models are (1) Model by Iida et al. (2)CSIRO model (3) Pyro research Model (4) Model by Tanaka et al. (5) Model approach by Reddy et al. and (6) KTH-model. The predictions and capabilities of the various models are compared. Estimations of viscosities from thermodynamic data and prediction of liquidus temperatures from viscosities are presented. The concept of surface viscosities with reference to slags and viscosities of two-phase mixtures are also taken up in the presentation.

DURING recent years thermal drying of fine coal has increased at a tremendous rate, but very little discussion of the several excellent units has found its way into print. This is particularly true for operating and maintenance costs, and the operator who is faced with his first fine coal drying installation must depend chiefly on hearsay when trying to determine what his drying costs will be. This article presents the maintenance and operating costs for the seven drying units now installed in preparation plants of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. and lists other cost information that should be obtained before any particular drying unit is selected.

A guide to the utilization and development of extensions and modifications to the APL Mine-electrical-system Load-flow Program is presented. These modifications include the development of algorithms to minimize computational operations within the iterative-solution techniques, as well as minimization of the number of required iterations. Extensions to the load-flow program include the development of algorithms for the calculation of balanced faults, simplified specification of fault parameters, optional inclusion of pre-fault currents, and an alternate-solution technique.

A geologic study of the Mary Lee Group of coalbeds in the Black Warrior coal basin was undertaken to examine coal stratigraphy and determine regional trends and extent of the coalbeds. The area investigated encompasses 835 square miles in Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa Counties, Ala. More than 700 core logs were used to construct a structure map, coal, interval, and overburden isopachs, and cross sections. There is evidence that structure affected sedimentation. Coalbed isopachs indicate the Mary Lee Group was deposited in fluvial-deltaic and low-lying coastal plain environments. The Mary Lee coalbed is the only coalbed which is continuous throughout the area, commonly with two benches which have a combined thickness of 2 to 12 feet. The Mary Lee coalbed changes rank in the basin from high- through medium- to low-volatile coal. The methane gas potential of the Mary Lee Group coals is estimated to be greater than 1 trillion cubic feet. There is an excellent correlation between the orientation of surface cleats with those measured underground in the Mary Lee coalbed. The face cleats roughly parallel the axes of the area's folds and trend northeast-southwest.

The phosphate fertilizer industry is at present based mainly on the use of sulfuric acid. This technology results in the generation of large amounts of radioactive gypsum that represents disposal and environmental problems. Also it involves the use of expensive reactors for acidification that necessitates the frequent replacing the damaged agitators. Applying hydrometallurgical techniques such as in-situ, heap, or vat leaching to phosphate processing could solve these problems. In this case, however, nitric acid must be used and dicalcium phosphate (40% P2O5) may be obtained as a final product. It is insoluble in water but soluble in citric acid and is an excellent fertilizer. This technology does not interfere with uranium recovery if desired. In addition it permits the recovery of rare earths which are otherwise lost in the gypsum.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with sulfur dioxide (S02)-bearing waste gases. This FGD process, referred to as the modified citrate process, involves absorption of S02 in a buffered citric acid solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently stripped from the solution using steam, which regenerates the solution and produces a wet S02 product. This product can be further processed to make sulfuric acid or liquid S02. Economic evaluations showed the process to be expensive when the stripper was operated at or near ambient pressures because of the large amounts of steam required for solution regeneration. Research was directed at reducing steam consumption in the stripper. The effect of stripper pressure on steam consumption was investigated. A process research unit (PRU) was operated with the stripper pressurized in the range of 5 to 150 psig. Test results showed that steam consumption decreased with increased stripper pressure. For example, when operating the PRU stripper at 150 psig, 4.1 grams of steam per gram of S02 was required to remove 90 pct of the S02 from a 1.0-vol-pct-S02 gas. This compares to 7.1 grams of steam per gram of S02 required for 90-pct S02 recovery at 5 psig.

Decision Network Modelling in a mining operation represents a complex process environment that is inherently more variable than a processing plant or factory. The uncertain availability of loading locations, haulage paths, loading and hauling equipment, along with inconsistent operator behaviour, cause a relatively large number of upset events that must be recognized, communicated and dealt with by the appropriate management authority. Traditional process maps that represent a deterministic model of the mining process can quickly break down in the face of such a volatile environment. An alternate modelling strategy, composed of decision networks, focuses on the interactions between goal-oriented entities and their environment, allowing system integrators to explicitly determine the information to be exchanged while providing feedback mechanisms that improve system flexibility and decision quality. This ensures a consistent framework for incrementally increasing system automation.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). The system was finally implemented in 1975ò

Calculations based on data related to the electrostatic precipitator illustrate the variation in the electric forces on a particle with change in position in the ionized field. The feeble forces in some separators are explained by the low field intensity at midpoint locations between the electrodes. When the particles are in contact with the exterior surface of a rotating cylindrical electrode, a high field intensity at the electrode surface combined with the image charge results in large electric forces. The permissible feed velocity increases as the square root of the electrode diameter, providing high values in efficiency and feed rate capacity, particularly in surface-to-mass ratio separations such as are encountered in secondary materials recycling operations.

"Roof bolts are the primary means of roof support in underground mines in the United States. Presently, post installation loads are measured on about 10% of the expansion anchor and combination bolts by using standard torque wrenches that Unit the accuracy of the measurements to about ±30%. No system has been available for measuring the loads generated on full-column resin grouted bolts. Mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, and placed in a corrosive environment, creating obstacles for researchers trying to utilize ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. This system is being used successfully in determining loads measured on expansion anchor and combination bolting systems, examining the transfer mechanics of full-column, resin-grouted bolts, and measuring loads generated on bolts in an underground roadway support system.IntroductionMillions of roof bolts are used each year to provide structural support in underground U.S. metal, non-metal, and coal mines. Approximately 45% of the bolts used are expansion anchor, 45% are resin-assisted combination or full-column resin-grouted, and 10% are friction anchored. The effectiveness of these bolting types is dependent on a number of factors including rock density, bolt length, in situ stresses, rock properties, bolt pattern, installation tension, etc. When implementing expansion anchor and resin assisted combination bolts , installation and post-installation tension, or load, is a major determinant of support quality and subsequent behaviour of the reinforced roof. The method by which these systems carry roof loads is well understood and documented(1,2).The importance of these installation and long-term bolt tension measurements is well recognized and are required in the federal government regulations(3). A statistical sample of the bolts, lout of 4 during installation and lout of 10 inby the last open crosscut, is required to be measured using current torque wrench technology. The disadvantages of this system are the disturbance and weakening of the anchorage and limitations of accuracy to approximately ± 30%. The method by which resin-grouted bolting systems carry roof loads is much less understood, mainly because testing procedures used to evaluate point-anchor systems are not effective on resin-grouted bolts.Due to these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines designed a measurement technique that provided a highly accurate, low cost-per- bolt system that led to the development of ultrasonic pulse echo instrumentation. The original system was designed to measure the tension only on expansion anchor bolts. Recent developments and system modifications have permitted measurements on resin-assisted and full-column resin-grouted bolts. The use of these types of support systems has been increasing steadily in underground coal mines.The development of this instrumentation has provided laboratory and field results that help to explain the mechanics and relationships between the applied loads and the interaction between the grouted bolt system consisting of the bolt tendon, grout, and rock."

In this paper, some of the constraints to applying bioremediation to the decontamination of polluted soils are introduced. Particularly, attention has been given to those associated with the geology of the polluted site. Areas which require further research have been addressed and indicate that geologists will play a key role, alongside microbial ecologists and engineers, in designing and implementing bioremediation strategies.

"Holographic interferometry is a non-destructive technique to detect small deformations1 of an object. It is a whole-field technique· with an accuracy of a few microns. An adaptation of holographic interferometry is time-averaged holographic interferometry which is particularly useful in detecting small vibration amplitudes of an object under investigation. Its application to biological tissue is especially difficult due to the combination of (a) the high sensitivity of the technique, and (b) the tendency of these objects to deform excessively, or move during the testing period. (This is also compounded by the changing moisture content of the tissue surface.)Ideally, a pulsed laser and fast-acting thermoplastic film camera could be chosen to overcome these difficulties, but the total equipment cost could exceed $75,000. In this paper we describe our relatively economical method to apply time· averaged holographic interferometry to an excised animal lung, utilizing holographic plates and a mechanically-shuttered continuous-wave Argon laser.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe schematic of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. 1. The holographic equipment, including the laser, is fixed on a 3 ft x 6 ft x 4 in. honeycomb holographic table. This table is functionally similar to one described by Mark and Horsch2 which can be constructed for about one thousand dollars. The holographic table itself rests on six inner tubes to absorb floor vibrations. All unnecessary vibrations must be reduced to preserve the quality of the holograms. A laser beam from a 0.5-watt continuous-wave Argon laser is split by a circular variable beamsplitter (Newport Corporation Model 50GOOAV.1) into two beams, i.e., an object beam and a reference beam. The object beam is again split into two beams of equal intensity by a 50150 beamsplitter (Newport ·Corporation Model BS.1). These beams are optically filtered and expanded by spatial filters (Newport Corporation Model 910) to cover as much area of the object as possible. Soft biological tissues exhibit low reflectives, resulting in a relatively high reference to object beam ratio of roughly 5 : 1 at the holographic plate."
