"Flame safety lamps have been used for about one hundred years in coal mines where a dangerous accumulation of explosive mine gas (methane) might occur and thus render the use of ordinary unprotected flame lamps dangerous. Flame safety lamps are not only used for illumination, but also for detecting the presence of dangerous percentages of methane mixed in the air of the mine.The safety of the lamp depends chiefly upon the cooling qualities ofThe safety of the lamp depends chiefly upon the cooling qualities of the wire gauze used to permit free circulation of the air through the lamp. If one enters a part of the mine where methane is present in the air, the methane enters the lamp and coming in contact with the wick flame is ignited and continues to burn within the gauze without igniting the methane surrounding the lamp. If the air within the mine is traveling at a velocity of several hundred feet per minute the burning gases may be driven through the gauze by the air current. If the gauzes are properly designed and of the proper material, these burning gases will be so cooled as they pass through the gauze that they will not cause an ignition of the gas surrounding the lamp. In order to test the effectiveness of a given safety lamp, tests are made in moving explosive mixtures of gas and air arranged to simulate mine conditions.The Bureau of Mines investigated many features relative to the safety of flame lamps and in 1915 established an official schedule known as Schedule 7 whereby flame lamps having certain prescribed qualifications would be approved as permissible for use in gaseous mines."

Distillable oils derived from coal were desulfurized and hydrogenated at 2,500 psig in a two-step vapor-phase catalytic operation to give a product rich in saturated cyclic hydrocarbons. The first step was mainly a desulfurization at 400 C, the second a saturation at 300 C. One of the oils used as feed stock was from low-temperature carbonization of a bituminous coal, the other was from the liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal in the Bureau's pilot plant. The product from the saturation step was distilled to remove the light ends and high-boiling residue and to recover a fraction having acceptable properties with respect to heating value, density, freezing point, viscosity, and boiling range according to specifications suggested by the Air Force for ultra-high-speed aircraft fuel. Quantities of the fuel fraction available were too small for the thermal stability test approved by the Air Force. The experiments, performed on laboratory scale, comprised mostly a study of the effect of varying the oil feed rate (at constant oil-to-hydrogen ratio) on the yield of the desired fuel fraction. The yield of the fuel fraction made from low-temperature carbonization oil was a little more than 1 percent of the weight of coal carbonized; that from coal-hydrogenation oil was about 12 percent of the weight of coal hydrogenated. A few attempts to do both desulfurization and saturation in one operation with sulfur resistant catalysts, developed for vapor-phase hydrogenation or hydroforming, were unsuccessful. By leaving the low-boiling ends in both feed stocks to desulfurization, another product was obtained: a low-sulfur aromatic cut boiling below 200 C. This material would be suitable as a solvent or a chemical raw material.

The Kibali Gold Mine is currently comprised of several open pits, a 3.5 Mtpa underground mine and a 7.5 Mtpa processing plant. Development of the underground operation commenced in December 2012, with initial access established through twin surface declines, followed by the commencement of a blind sink 8 m diameter rock hoist shaft in March 2013. Stope production started in December 2014 with ore and waste trucked to surface. The 755 m deep blind shaft sink was completed in August 2015 together with the cutting and equipping of three main station levels. Two of these levels provide access for the establishment of the underground materials handling system as well as the main dewatering system for the mine. This paper covers the process of determining the optimal location of the Kibali hoisting shaft relative to project-specific critical factors, and then focuses on the design and implementation journey associated with the off-shaft development that essentially encompasses the Material Handling System (MHS) for the mine. The journey starts from the findings of the previous owners Feasibility Study (FS), a subsequent Optimised FS, followed by detailed engineering through to implementation. It was identified during implementation that a significant change in the designed off-shaft layout was required following detailed underground geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations. In addition, the paper provides details on the MHS performance since commissioning to steady state, and on key learnings relating to the overall project process.

This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp's Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

I NDUSTRIAL explosives, as distinguished from military explosives, include high explosives and blasting powder. The high explosives which are best known are straight dynamite, gelatin dynamite, ammonia dynamite and permissibles. There are two kinds of blasting powder, saltpetre blasting powder and nitrate of soda blasting powder. Blasting powders are mechanical mixtures of nitrate of potash or nitrate of soda with sulfur and charcoal, highly compressed, granulated and glazed. They ignite from a spark and burn with relative slowness, the rate of burning and hence the rate of conversion into gases depending upon the size of the granulation and upon the degree of. confinement under which the powder is placed. High explosives, on the other hand, are chemical compounds which detonate; that is, when the explosive is subjected to a violent shock, provided in practice by a blasting cap or an electric blasting cap, the molecule of the essential ingredient, usually nitroglycerin, is disrupted and the energy and heat released cause any other explosive ingredients which may be present, such as ammoniuin nitrate or T.N.T., to decompose with a resultant evolution of gases at an extremely rapid rate varying from 6000 to 20,000 ft. per second.

The Danskin/South Fork Boise River study area is 40 air km southeast of Boise, Idaho. The 16,000-hectare, two-segment area is mainly underlain by Cretaceous-age granodiorite and an aplitic and pegmatitic complex of the Idaho batholith, Miocene-age rhyolitic tuffs and lavas, and late Tertiary-age basalt flows. No mineral resources were identified in the study area. One mine, The Flat Creek mine, which produced several ounces of gold and silver, was found in the study area. It is geologically similar to deposits in the Neal mining district, adjacent to the northwest corner of the area; gold mineralization occurs along east-northeast-trending faults and associated quartz veins, which dip moderately to steeply southeast, and within adjacent Cretaceous granitic rock. Samples indicate the Flat Creek deposit is not rich enough to mine underground, and near surface, open-pit-mineable deposit areas could not be identified. However, exploration is warranted there and also in the 7-km interval to mines in the Neal district, and for extensions of those mines. No evidence of geothermal activity was observed, although there are hot springs in the vicinity. Some alluvial (placer) samples from the interior of the study area contained free gold, but no substantial gravel deposits were seen.

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent no improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silver-bearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores char because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

"Valuation methods are well established for mineral properties with production or imminent production, and include discounted cash flow and comparable transactions. Valuation methods for non-producing mineral properties, however, are more subjective. Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the prefeasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. Different valuation methods may be appropriate for different types of mineral properties.Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage. The market approach is generally appropriate to all types of mineral properties, although it is difficult to find good comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions. Cost approach methods, such as appraised value and geoscience factor, are commonly used for exploration stage properties.Canadian standards and guidelines for valuation of mineral properties are in the process of being finalized by a Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIMVal Committee). The CIMVal Standards are intended to be consistent with National Instrument 43-101, which sets regulatory standards of disclosure for mineral projects, and with International Valuation Standards. The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuation be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be disclosed."

Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

"Over the last ten years or so many man hours have been dedicated to developing methods for simulating shape casting processes. The majority of the methods developed have been devised by a combination of computer, mathematics and materials specialists often with limited knowledge of foundries and foundrymen. As a result of this it would appear that although there are many software packages for the foundryman to use there still exist fundamental misunderstandings as to their usefulness and suitability within the foundry.The paper aims to identify how well current software packages perform. The relationships between physical phenomena, practical defects and software capabilities are presented. Some discussion of the use of criteria functions is also presented. Finally issues arising from the postprocessing of results are discussed as the presentation of the results to the lay-person in simulation techniques is possibly one of the most important aspects in influencing the adoption of this type of software in the foundry community."

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. This paper presents the implementation of a digital twin for the vibro-replacement ground improvement process, as part of a digital construction site. The goal is to implement an evidence-based quality assurance for each produced element (column or point). The system uses a combination of planning data and real-time machine data collected automatically from construction equipment. In addition to the quality assurance, feedback is provided in a number of areas, e.g., condition monitoring of the equipment. The digital twin builds upon the real-time sensor and machine data, fused with metadata, to implement a digital model for the process. A hierarchical data evaluation, using rule-based Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), permits viewing of the spatial variation of data over the construction site. This permits the modelling of systematic variations in subsurface properties across the site, enabling the detection of anomalous individual elements, the diagnosis of their cause and the prediction of properties as construction proceeds over the site. All time-series data and KPIs are represented by standard classes of objects, leading to a generic coding of the data analysis; this minimizes the effort required to add additional sites and/or new KPIs. Examples are presented for a number of sites, where the system was used to identify anomalous columns.

? THE man is always greater than his work.? The training of the men who are to develop the mineral resources of the world is the most important problem connected with mining engineering. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. THE PECULIAR NATURE OF MINERAL WEALTH. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while raining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau's BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today's coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation's recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

In an age where customer service and quality drive today's industry and business, no service or product is exempt from these demands. Industry and business are streamlining everything from people to equipment and today have a heavier reliance on the performance and quality of their assets and equipment, (one of the keys to staying competitive). In the mining process industry, the centrifugal slurry pump is a key piece of equipment that keeps product moving and aids in generating revenue for its owner. The continued improvement and customer success lies in a team effort between the mining industry and the pump manufacturers. We, the pump manufacturers, need to keep improving our designs to further extend the life of our pump with fewer failures and promote to our customers proper maintenance of the pumps to continually keep unexpected failures to a minimum. Strict equipment maintenance, as thoroughly demonstrated by the military, is key to the long life and success of any piece of equipment. In the often harsh duty of the centrifugal slurry pump, maintenance is something that requires "attention to detail". No area of the pump is exempt from attentive maintenance. Here, discussions will focus on the areas of the mechanical drive end, wet end, seals, and extended pump shut down and start up. There has not been a slurry pump designed to maintain or repair itself. So in effect, each pump warrants able bodied maintenance persons to maintain them who continually observe all the rules of safety. Prior to any maintenance discussion or action, the issue of safety should always be addressed. Here, as with everywhere, the same rules apply. Work at a safe pace, note all safety precautions, use associated safety equipment and personal protective attire, observe all tagout and lockout procedures, and most importantly, be aware.

"India’s economy is expanding with rapid urbanization. Improvement in infrastructure is a keystone to the Indian government’s economic plans, including expansion of transit systems. Most of these systems are designed with elevated and underground sections. New Delhi, a city of 23 million people, suffers from heavy traffic congestion and pollution. The transit (metro) system is seen to be of critical importance. Phase 3 of the Delhi transit system project is 140 kilometers (km), with 40 km of twin-bore tunnels requiring 35 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for construction. Transit systems are also under design or construction in Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Mumbai. Most have twin-bore tunnels. At present, 55 TBMs are operating on underground metro construction, and future projects will increase this number. This paper highlights the unique challenges of construction of underground metro systems in highly congested urban environments, using Kolkata and Delhi systems as examples. INTRODUCTION The first transit system in India was constructed in Kolkata (India’s third-largest city by population.) This line is 28 kilometers (km) in length, has underground and at-grade sections, was built in phases, runs north/south, and has 24 stations. This project was sanctioned in 1972, started construction in 1984, and was completed in 1995. The tunnels were constructed primarily by cut and cover methods with some open-face, compressed air shield tunneling. In 2006, the urban transport policy recommended construction of transit rail systems in all urban cities with a population exceeding 2 million. Further, in 2014 the central government stated that it would assist in financing transit systems in all cities with a population of over 1 million. In 2015, the central government approved the development of transit systems in 50 additional cities across India with a budget of $75 billion (see Figure 1). Transit development is just part of a huge expansion in planned rapid transport systems, which include metro, bus, high-speed rail, and monorail systems. Metro systems will include elevated and underground sections with twin-bore tunnels and underground stations. In the Delhi/National Capital Region (NCR), now the largest city in India by population, Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) was formed in 1995 as a joint venture company between the central government and Delhi state. DMRC operates the Delhi metro system. (see the case studies described later in this paper). DMRC has developed an external function to carry out studies and to offer consultancy to other cities planning transits. Since its inception, DMRC has produced Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for every metro and monorail project in India. In 2012, DMRC became a partner in the management consultancy for Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit System, its first project overseas. DMRC became a model organization for other cities to follow. These cities have included Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Nagpur. Other cities (e.g., Lucknow and Patna) are in the metro planning phase. Metro systems are under construction or partially operating in Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Jaipur."

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. The Waihi underground mining operation currently mines epithermal veins ranging from two metres up to ten metres in width using a ‘Modified Avoca’ stoping method. This method consists of longhole bench stope mining at 15m to 18m sublevel spacing. The bulk of production drilling and blasting is top down with the extraction length of a typical stope panel nominally being 18m to 20m along strike. A stope panel is usually taken in two blasting cycles followed by the remote bogging of the stope ore. The panel is backfilled in-cycle using unconsolidated waste rock material which is tipped into the void from the upper level using a Caterpillar R2900 or R1700 sized underground loader. The underground mine first commenced production in 2008 and up until 2016, as was typical of many open stope mining operations at the time, an underground loader was used to place a waste rock bund at the top brow of the open stope. This rock bund was the principal means of protecting people and equipment from this hazard. In 2016 there was a fatality at the mine when a loader that had been tasked with building this rock bund fell into the stope void. Immediately post incident all mining and processing operations were suspended for a week to allow colleagues to grieve, to observe cultural protocols and to begin the investigation into this event. During this period senior operators, supervisory and technical staff developed an innovative system which used steel bollards to protect this open edge. With development over the following months this bollard system has eliminated this hazard from the Waihi underground mine.
