"Gas purging systems are well established in nonferrous metallurgy at multiple steps during metal production, including melting, converting, alloying, and metal cleaning. Since the kinetics of all of these stages are positively influenced by using gas purging systems the overall process benefits are substantial. In the aluminum industry, inert or reaction gases are blown into the melt using porous plugs to achieve improved metal grades, higher productivity, and more efficient energy utilization. To enable the most effective application of the process gases a complete package, termed AL KIN, was developed by RHI that includes porous plugs, refractory expertise, gas supply technology, and gas control equipment. This paper discusses the technological and economic advantages of this system and the specific benefits of fuel reduction, production time savings, decreased process gas consumption, and improved refractory service life and maintenance are illustrated using an aluminum slug plant in Austria.IntroductionIn addition to high quality production, increasing productivity is the main goal in many aluminum cast houses to maintain or even strengthen their market position. The Neuman Aluminium Group, based in Austria, North America, and based in Austria, North America, and China, is the largest slugproducer for tubes, cans, and automotive parts worldwide. Recently, a comprehensive improvement program was initiated at the Neuman Aluminium Austria slug plant in Marktl - the main factory and technological centre of the group. The principal goal of the optimization project was to increase the productivity of the strip-casting production. The investment included a gas purging system, ingot preheating equipment, a new insulated launder system, and optimized melting cycles. However, the introduction of the gas purging system was pivotal to the project and has accounted for approximately 50% of the benefits achieved. This paper describes the AL KIN gas purging technology and details the process benefits resulting from the improvements at Neuman Aluminium Austria."

Tho main storm sewer cross soction is excavated to a roughly hox- agonal shapo 10 foot high by 10 foot wido at the contor. The upper half of the tunnol soction is solidly lined with either timber or stool. After all oxcavation is completed, the tunnel will be finished with a concrete circular lining 8 feet in inside diameter. The lateral storm sewer is excavated to a 5-1/2-foot by 7-1/2-foot section and will event- ually be finished with concrete to a modified horseshoe-shaped section 6 feet by 4 feet. Where the back or walls are considered unsafe during excavation, the upper half of the tunnel is lined solidly with timber. The equipment used by the Sower Division, City of Minneapolis, has been selected to meet a number of applications in storm-sewer work with diversified usage in mind. The sand pumps used on this job are rubber-lined, designed to work against a head of 100 foet. Either 4-inch or 6-inch diameter suction and discharge openings may be used. Other equipment, such as pipe, mine rail, flexible hoses, compressors, and general surface shop equipment, is drawn from a contral warohouse. It may be either new or used, depending on what is available at the warehouse. Much of the pipe and mine rail has been used for many years on several different tunnol jobs.

This report summarizes the findings of methods of treating caking coals in a fluid bed to destroy their caking properties. In batch tests it was found that several coals, including those with a free-swelling index greater than 8, could be decaed at temperatures from 400° to 425° C with a fluidizing gas composed of inert gas or steam containing 0.2 percent oxygen and a minimum residence LS,-;,' of 5 minutes. When treatment decreased the free-swelling index from about 8 to 1-1/2 or lower, the resulting treated coal was noncaking. In a continuous unit with continuous feed and discharge of coal, slightly more severe conditions were required to decake the coal. For 18- to 100-mesh coal a temperature of 430° to 440° C and an oxygen-to coal ratio of 0.4 cubic foot of oxygen per pound of coal feed was necessary. Finer mesh sizes required lower oxygen-to-coal ratios. In tests using air only as the fluidizing medium and treatment temperatures well below the softening range, the caking properties of 150- to 200-mesh coal were destroyed in 30 to 40 minutes of residence time at 200° C. Coarser sizes of 18 to 48, 48 to 100, and 100 to 150 mesh required longer residence time.

It is not my intention today to make a series of predictions of things to come. Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made be-fore engineering groups usually fall short of the mark; that is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier.Instead, I will point out some recent accomplishments or refer to research that is in progress or now being planned in order to suggest important trends to be expected in the next few years. Bromly, Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*):—The following criticism of what "is offered as a summary which may be found useful by mining engineers," is not dictated by any captious spirit, but in the intereet of historical and scientific accuracy. The States of Queretaro and Oaxaca have produced sufficient silver to warrant more extended notice. Referring to Pachuca, State of Hidalgo, the eomewhat loose and inexact statement is made that "the ore-depdsit is an andesite, intermixed with quartz-veins, rich from the surface." A better description mould be,—the ore-deposits consist of quartz-veins in andesite. It is notable that many of the rich shoots worked in recent days did not come to surface. In consequence, Pachuca is often quoted by the ill-informed as a camp in which values improve with depth, the truth being that the veins carry shoots, or clavos, some of which were exposed at surface and some not. The name of " electric plow," applied to the mechanical stirrer of recent use, is certainly not to be recommended. The stirrer, or agitator, consists essentially of a traversing gang-plow, operated by power through shafting; drums, and wire-rope. The fact that in certain plants the motive-power used is electricity does not make it an electric plow. Such a name suggests a machine of which the motor is an essential and integral part; which is not so in this case. A lathe in a factory driven by water-power is not called a hydraulic lathe. My experience agrees with Dr. Raymond's note as to azulapue, which in some districts is also applied to blue copper carbonate. The El Oro, Esperanza, and Mexico mines should be allocated to the State of Mexico; the Dos Estrellas being in Michoacan, as stated. The El Oro quartz certainly does not appeal to me

There has been significant progress made with narrow vein gold mines in which a second option for crushing has begun to attract attention. To ensure the profitability of a mine that has based its economics on the absence of a crusher station, more than just best blasting practices are required. Using a blasting operation itself as a primary crusher would undoubtedly save enormous capital costs as well as eliminate some of the costs of crushing ore with the result that considerable savings might be realized. The challenge would be to define the conditions necessary to make this type of operation feasible by providing consistent blasting methods that result in a significant paradigm shift with respect to both blasting and current underground crushing methods. A break model has been developed and applied as a technique in designing blasting patterns based on a unit charge blasting geometry and stress reflection from free faces. There are four components to this model and these are 1) unit charge, 2) thermodynamic/energy, 3) stress reflection, and 4) radial break. Some important changes in timing between holes and rows based on rock properties and the percentage of burden moved were also used. On-site testing at a narrow vein gold mine in Quebec Canada, provided measured parameters for the model. No underground crusher was planned - relying only on the fragmentation profile generated by ring blasting. "Cable bolts are an important support component in modern underground mines. If an optimized cable bolt system is to be achieved, it is insufficient to focus on cable bolt layout design or on cable bolt installation in isolation. Cable bolt support, like all engineered systems, requires a holistic approach, encompassing integrated elements of design, implementation and verification. The “Cable bolting Cycle” described in this paper incorporates these components along with related tools and procedures which should be used together to ensure effective and efficient cable bolt support.Design involves the consideration of demand, capacity and constraints as outlined in this paper. The demands imposed on the sup-port system by the rock mass response to excavation under the combined action of stress and gravity must be matched to the capacity of the cable bolt array. The cable bolt system capacity is a function of the component strengths of the steel strand and the bond (load transfer) and by the deformation response and retention characteristics of the system. The design is bounded by operational and economic constraints.Implementation of the cable bolt array can then proceed and must include appropriate protocols of communication, training and quality control, in addition to both general and site specific installation procedures. Due to always getting stricter environmental legislations as well as increasing land filling fees the efforts for treating residues from metallurgy are continuously increasing. In case of filter dusts from metallurgical industry, the high zinc bearing electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts or also dusts from secondary copper industry are important sources for the recovery of secondary zinc oxide. Because of low capacities for secondary zinc concentrates (like Waelz oxide) in primary zinc metallurgy, the upgrade of such concentrates to a quality that meets the requirements of high quality (technical) zinc oxide becomes more and more important. This would open the opportunity to break into new markets and use it for example directly in electrolytic galvanizing. Therefore this paper will summarize possibilities for an elimination of halogens from secondary zinc oxides. Furthermore selective volatilization trials, with a synthetic mixture according to the analysis of Waelz oxide, were carried out to remove impurities to achieve an upgraded product quality.

Computer models for simulating the construction and for calculating the properties of particulate solids in two- and three-dimensional systems (coverings of circles and packings of spheres, respectively) were developed. By simulating the physical process of constructing circle coverings and sphere packings, in which the circles or spheres were randomly selected from many different distributions of sizes, physically realizable loose random assemblies were simulated whose physical and geometrical properties were predictable with the computer. Many of these properties, such as the number of contacts, are extremely-difficult to measure accurately, or considerable ingenuity is required in their determination. All of these properties were easily and accurately calculated by the computer models for many different coverings and packings constructed from equal, discrete, uniform, and log-normal distributions of particles. In addition to the loose random assemblies, dense random covering and packing constructions were simulated whose properties are ideal upper limits for those of the loose random coverings and packings. The properties of the dense random coverings and packings, heretofore only obtainable by theoretical analysis, were also simply obtained. The statistical geometry of loose random coverings and packings was studied, and several new interpretations of the area-covering or space-filling requirements in these systems were made. In two dimensions, it was found that the properties of all loose random coverings are predictable by taking suitably weighted averages of the corresponding properties of just four kinds of polygons whose edges are defined by connecting the centers of mutually tangent circles in the covering. The distributions of these polygons that permit area-covering were determined, and empirical equations for predicting the density, average coordination number, and average pore area in loose and dense random coverings were formulated. The properties of loose packings were determined by performing a simplicial division of the computer-simulated assemblies to produce a unique set of minimum volume, space-filling tetrahedra whose edges connected the sphere centers in each packing. A simple empirical equation was formulated that permits the calculation of the average number of contacts in any sphere packing, random or regular. Some of the statistical geometrical properties of the simplicial tetrahedra in the computer-simulated packings were analyzed. The tetrahedron edge length distributions in all the loose random packings were nearly identical when the edges were presented in terms of sphere diameters, regardless of the sphere population in the packing. Moreover, the gap lengths in the loose packings were to an excellent approximation representable by a uniform distribution of sizes. The distributions of spheres in tetrahedra resulting from the simplicial division of the loose random packings also existed in the tetrahedra in dense random packings. These observations were employed in developing a unique method for predicting the geometrical properties of loose random packings without simulating the assembled packing. Instead, the space-filling simplicial graph could be predicted for any given density of packing of any sphere population. The cumulative packing properties of these tetrahedra were shown to be nearly identical to those calculated by all loose random packing simulations attempted in this investigation. The simplicial tetrahedra completely describe a packing and can therefore be used to predict all properties of interest.

Dry coal processing is becoming increasingly favoured as a fine coal beneficiation technique. The decline in suitable good-quality coal, as well as the ongoing decrease in usable process water, makes dry beneficiation of the fine coal fraction even more crucial. Dry fine coal beneficiation is a relatively young process with most of the methods still in the developmental phase. Additionally, many of the dry processing options available are better suited for coarser (+6 mm) and easy-to-beneficiate coal. Air winnowing for fine particles has been established in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, which indicates that the method can be used to separate smaller particles on a density basis and therefore, may prove effective in the coal industry as well. A proof of concept study was conducted using both computer-based simulations (which do not form part of this paper) and physical experiments. The initial winnowing unit consisted of a closed box with a horizontal air stream flowing through the top section. Coal particles were injected into the air stream and displaced horizontally across a distance (x), depending on the particle size and density, thus actuating a separation based on these two parameters. For this study particle sizes of 6, 4 and 2 mm were used all with a density ranging from 1200 kg·m-3 to 2000 kg·m-3. The simulation in Star CCM+ confirmed the findings of the mathematic behavioural model and provided a virtual representation of the separation using streamlines and particle tracks. The coal tests prove that size separation can be achieved at an airflow velocity of 21 m·s-1 and the density cut-point can also be predicted by using the prediction matrices constructed as part of this study. The results show efficiency values (EPM) of 0.11 and 0.09 at density cut-points of 1400 kg·m-3 and 1500 kg·m-3 respectively. The data obtained from the study indicates that air winnowing can be used to separate fine coal particles based on both size and density. However, in order to achieve an efficient density separation, a narrow size range is required. With some improvements to the model, simulation, method and design, the separation efficiency can also be improved. The next phase of testing will include the upscaling of the process to a demonstration plant, optimising the separation unit and testing the method on different qualities of coal. Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. "Introduction1N THE FALL of 1951, Peace River Allied Fort St. John No. 1 well was drilled in Lsd. 1, Section 9 Township 83, Range 18, West of the 6th Meridian, on the flats of the north side of Peace river, six miles southeast of the village of Fort St. John, B.C. During this operation, non-commercial shows gas in three zones and of oil in one zone were obtained during the drill-stem tests. Further geological study indicated that this well was on the southeastern edge of the Fort St. St. John structure.Pacific Fort St. John No. 4, drilled shortly afterwards, obtained possible commercial gas flows on drill-stem test in five zones and thus encouraged development of what has become Canada's largest multizone gas field.In general, the productive horizons in this area possess fair per-meabilities and high porosities, a combination which provides for high reserves and moderate productivities. Development to date has therefore stressed experimental techniques in drilling and completion practice to provide high deliverability wells.Data and information of a specific nature apply, in all cases, to the pools in the Fort St. John structure."

U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers reviewed an in situ stress estimate developed from measurements of overcore strain taken at test sites on the 7300 and 7500 levels of the Star Mine near Mullan, ID. Although the field measurements of over coring strain were found to be useful, significant deficiencies were found in the stress estimation procedure. A new stress estimate was developed incorporating statistical methods and an improved understanding of stress concentration factors for interpreting overcore strains recorded by doorstopper&apos; cells. Spatial variability of overcore strains and the implications for stress field variability were explored.

A comprehensive research program designed to aid development of new and improved methods for more complete production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is being conducted at the Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. Water flooding has accounted for much of the petroleum produced by secondary-recovery methods; however, a considerable portion of the crude oil commonly remains in place after water flooding has been terminated. In recent years the possibility of increasing the efficiency of water flooding by using surface-active additives has received wide attention. In general, the results of laboratory research have shown that use of detergents as water-flooding additives will reduce the residual petroleum in porous media (1).3/ Some less extensive field tests have supported this conclusion but have not been entirely conclusive (2). Later studies (3, 4) have given conflicting evidence as to the relative worth of detergent additives for water floods in water-wet (hydrophilic) or oil-wet (hydrophobic or lipophilic) reservoir materials. The results of these studies emphasize the need for a more complete understanding of the fundamental principles involved in displacing petroleum from reservoir surfaces by injected fluids. Accordingly, a comprehensive research program was initiated to investigate the practical and fundamental aspects of detergency in petroleum production.

This circular is part II of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of employees. It deals with the physiological aspects of the principal physical qualities of mine air; part I (Information Circular 7001), chapters 1 to 3, discussed the physiological aspects of the chemical qualities of mine air, especially when contaminated with organic matter and noxious and toxic gases; part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air-conditioning mines to try to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts of tae world. With the present emphasis on the necessity for preserving the health of the Nation&apos;s defenders, industrial as well as military, attention should be called to the various conditions that may affect adversely their health and efficiency. One of the most important of these is exposure to abnormal air conditions, especially high temperatures and humidities. Therefore, it is believed that although the data presented here on the physiological effects of exposure to high temperatures cue intended mainly for the mining and allied industries, they are applicable to many other defense industries as well as to conditions present in some activities of the Army and Navy.

"The Lake St. Joseph Iron Deposit is in Northwestern Ontario. Exploration to date by Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited has indicated an ore reserve of 683 million long tons. Metallurgical investigations have proved that suitable oxide pellets and/or superconcentrates can be economically produced from this ore. Studies of the Lake St. Joseph iron ore deposits have covered the period 1956-71, and have embodied applications of the improvement in mining and processing technology over this period. Market demand in the early 1960's for high-grade oxide pellets as a replacement for natural iron ores for the blast furnace first drew attention to the potential of the Lake St. Joseph deposit. The current market trend toward utilization of sponge iron to replace steel scrap as feed to electric furnaces and cupolas now suggests that the deposit can better be exploited as a prime source of superconcentrates."

The Bunker Hill Mine, located in north Idaho, consists of over 150 miles of passageways within highly fractured and faulted Precambrian metamorphosed rocks. The Bunker Hill Mine was at one time a major producer of lead and zinc; currently it is on inactive but maintained status. Ground water moving along flow paths that have been disturbed by mining reacts with pyrite and oxygen to produce acid water within the mine. Discharge of this acid water averages more than 5 cubic feet per second, with an average zinc concentration of 160 mg/L and pH of 2.8. Treatment of this acid mine drainage is required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Cessation of all underground activities at the Bunker Hill Mine will not terminate the production of acid mine drainage. Reclamation alternatives that could either reduce the quantity or Improve the quality of the drainage upon mine closure are highly attractive. This project is directed towards delineation of reclamation alternatives based upon an understanding of the characteristics of ground water recharge near the mine. A variety of field techniques were used to identify areas of rapid infiltration and to investigate the ground water flow system associated with the upper portion of the mine in a portion of the Milo Creek drainage. These techniques include Installation of piezometer nests, dye tracing, surface resistivity, dye dilution, spring surveys, and hydrochemical analyses. Sites of direct Infiltration into the mine have been located. These include mine workings directly below perennial streams, intersections between streams and faults, and a caved area adjacent to an ephemeral stream. Results of these investigations indicate that recharge through these sites is not as rapid as suggested by previous studies. Inflow to the underground workings from the ground water flow system around the margin of the mine may account for more mine water than sites of direct infiltration. Recharge control at areas of direct infiltration could result in a net decrease in the quantity of acid drainage from the Bunker Hill Mine. Locations suggested for recharge control are West Milo Creek above the Guy Caving Area, the intersections of the Cate Fault with South Milo and Milo Creeks, and an area of Milo Creek below the Milo Creek Dam that overlies shallow mine workings.
