Transporting coal by means of conveyor belts is very common in Australian underground coal mines. Major conveyor belt-related mining incidents are now relatively infrequent as a result of recent improvements in engineering standards and use of fire-resistance materials. However, conveyor belts have the potential for incidents capable of causing either personal or structural damage. In addition, any unexpected break down of rolling components or failure of belts creates a significant interruption to the production that is a major concern for operators whose responsibility is to achieve the optimum mining production.Currently, underground coal conveyor belts are examined for the presence of any overheating, smouldering or unsafe conditions likely to cause a fire. Periodic inspection of operating conveyor belts is carried out with the aim of detecting any local heat sources in an early stage. This includes temperature measurements of the driving head, idlers and rollers using hand-held temperature sensors such as infrared cameras or laser temperature sensors. The disadvantages of current conveyor belt temperature monitoring systems include high labour and equipment costs, safety risk to personnel who are in close proximity to moving conveyors, the ability to take line of site measurements only and potential for missed overheated idlers. Some of the conveyor idlers in underground coal operations cannot be accessed for traditional temperature measurements. This introduces a significant risk to the operation of critical infrastructure.A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system can be used to develop an advanced conveyor belt temperature monitoring system that provides real-time, accurate and continuous temperature measurements along a conveyor belt particularly at the rolling components. The DTS system comprises of fibre optic detection cable, DTS controller and interfacing module. The advantages of the system include the accuracy, low-cost, easy installation, robustness, safety, immunity to radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, real-time data collection, and secure data transmission. This paper presents a scoping study on the development and utilisation of a fibre optic-based DTS system for underground coal conveyor belts. The mechanism of heat generation, the operation temperature range and the installation issues of fibre optic cable along the conveyor belt particularly in close proximity to each end of the spindle on every idler will be discussed.CITATION:Aminossadati, S M and Yang, B, 2013. Along with other phases of mining , the ventilation of metal mines has been affected by the business depression of 1930. As might be expected , some of the results are favorable , and some are distinctly disadvantageous to progress . Probably the worst effect of the recession of mining activity is that , as usual , one of the first departments of almost any industrial establishment ( and this is especially true of mining ) to be curtailed is that which concerns what might be called welfare work , such as safety , health , etc. , and ventilation : in consequence , a number of men who were employed mainly on ventilation work in metal mines are now out of employment and their former duties either are being handled by others as only part of a crowded routine or are being allowed to lapse . On the bright side of the picture is the following paragraph from a letter by the ventilation and sarety engineer of the United Verde Copper Co. , Jerome , Ariz . , indicating that money and effort expended on ventilation during " flush " times give results which aid in money savings when depression comes : The desirability of absolute control over the ventilation system has again been demonstrated at this mine . Under full operation we have been using approximately 500 hp . to drive our big fan . Under curtailed operations we naturally do not require as much air , so by sending the air only where needed and airing out all other places periodically to keep timber , etc. , in good condition we have been able to economize in the quantity of air required . The fan speed has been reduced and the power dropped to 300 hp . , thus effecting a material saving in the power bill , and still maintaining an efficient ventilating system . "

As a safeguard against excessive clinker troubles, specifications for the purchase of coal can be drawn to include the "softening" or "fusing" temperature of the ash. The value of such information has been recognized by the Bureau of Mines and has induced the bureau to investigab~ laboratory methods of determining the fUSIbility of coal ash, and the bearing of the results on clinker formation in fuel beds. The bureau realized that the fusibility of a mixture of oxides and silicates snch as is comprised in coal ash ,'aries according to the conditions under which tests are made, and that in the absence of any generally accepted method, no agreement is to be expected among tests made in differ«:-nt laboratories. Indeed, Marks a has recently called attention to differences as great as 3900 C. that were obtained with the same sample of ash by two different laboratories. Therefore if a fusion-temperature clause is to have any place in specifications for coal, a standard m('thod of t('sting should be adopted in order to insure comparable results by different laboratories and to obtain the softening or fusing temperature of the ash unde:'r conditions similar to those of a fuel bed. After a consistent method has been devised for obtaining comparable:' results at different laboratories, there will remain the correlation of these results with those from the burning of coal in furnaces before the value of fusibility tests in coal specifications can hE' finally determined.

This paper describes the U. S. Energy Research and Development Administration's (ERDA) program to develop in situ coal conversion processes, especially gasification, he potential of this technology, the technical directions being explored, and the program strategy to carry the process concepts toward commercialization are emphasized. The geographic location of the U. S. coal resources and a market analysis are described. Commercially successful in situ coal processes could add over a trillion tons of coal to the U. S. coal reserves. The economics of these processes is compared with surface gasification independent studies show this process to be 25Z cheaper than surface gasification for Western coals. The major projects are briefly described. The Linked Vertical Well process is in the lost advanced stage and shows great promise. The last test produced a low-Btu gas averaging 171 Btu per standard cubic foot for average pro¬duction rates of 5.5 million standard cubic feet per day. The other projects are Packed Bed, Longwall Generator, and Steeply Dipping Beds.

This study was made to show the growth of petroleum coking and to determine trends and characteristics of marketing and utilization of coke on the West Coast, comparing these data with those of the United States as a whole. An earlier Bureau of Mines economic survey of petroleum coke was made in 1930 before the widespread use of coking processes. Data, derived from published and unpublished literature as well as from interviews with industry representatives, show a marked increase in the production of petroleum coke since the end of World War II. This increase resulted from the need of refiners to upgrade heavy residuums for which the demand was diminishing. Increasing coke production as well as significant market shifts away from California-produced coke have created excessive stocks of petroleum coke on the West Coast. The causes of these market shifts were based mainly on (1) economic factors and (2) certain undesirable qualities of some of the petroleum coke produced in California.

Low-temperature carbonization of coal in Japan served as an important source of liquid fuels during the war. Six plants operating in Japan Proper produced 203,069 KL (53.7 million gallons) of liquid fuel from 1940 until the end of the war in August 1945, while four additional plants in Karafuto and Korea produced 211,943 KL (56.0 million gallons) for a total of 415,012 KL (109.7 million gallons) of liquid products. Semicoke produced in these plants was used for domestic fuel, for gasi- fication in portable gas producers on automotive vehicles, and to replace imported low-volatile bituminous coal in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. Since 1936 one plant had produced more than 300,000 metric tons of semicoke for blending with bituminous coal to form coke, while the total production of semicoke since the beginning of the industry in 1923 is approxi- mately 2,000,000 metric tons. Despite an apparent annual carbonizing capacity of about 2,000,000 metric tons of coal for the entire country, the maximum amount of scmicoke produced during the peak year, 1943, was 468,446 metric tons. The equipment used is primarily of Gorman design. Just before the end of the war, 6 plants using 20 Lurgi carbonizers were operating with a total rated capacity of more than 1,500,000 metric tons of coal per year, while 2 Koppors units had a combined annual rated capacity of 400,000 metric tons of coal. One plant using the Japanese-designed Mimura system was in service but with so much mechanical trouble that its output was small, while in another plant 4 Wanisht carbonizers of Japanese design but based on an early German development were running satisfactorily, and carbonizing about 100,000 metric tons of coal per year. A single installation of 15 American-designed Knowles ovens was operating near Tokyo but was carbonizing pitch for electrode carbon. ..! No true low-temperature process used in Japan could carbonize strongly. caking coals satisfactorily. The Mimura process designed for this purpose was unsuccessful, as was the Shimomura process before it, while the Lurgi, Koppers, and Wanishi systems operated only with noncaking or very weakly caking coals. This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change in coal seam inclination, Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in, diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, productlon to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed unit trainloading and storage installations in the midwestern, eastern, and southeastern coalfields. Nine individual operations were studied in detail as a representative cross section of unit train operations in these areas. Of the nine operations studied, three were in Illinois, two in Kentucky, and one each in West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Information was obtained from coal producers, coal sale agencies, railroads, construction and equipment companies, and power companies.

All technical facilities of the Bureau of Mines have been geared for more efficient use and conservation of mining equipment, developing plans for safety, improving the quality of coal through better methods of preparation, studying the problems of coal storage and utilization, and extending the uses of coal5/ for the war and postwar economy. The Bureau is now analyzing all of the coal purchased by the Army and much of that required by the Navy. Work on boiler feed water was doubled over last year to meet the increased demand made by the War Department for protecting vital boiler plants in many new camps and defense plants. Progress has been made in safely storing coal to reduce dangers of spontaneous ignition to a minimum and to preserve coking power. Mixtures of oil and coal to be used as a substitute fuel have been investigated. If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

General economic conditions continued to improve in the second quarter of 1984 as real gross national product advanced at an annual rate of 7.5 percent (table 1). This followed an even larger first quarter annual rate increase of 10.1 percent. The slower second quarter growth was greeted as a sign that the economy is not over-heating. The signs of slowed growth in some sectors suggest that the recovery may continue well into 1985 without the inflation symptomatic of a rapid recovery. Most of the slowdown in growth was absorbed by business inventories, personal consumption of durable goods, and residential fixed investment. Business inventories grew by only 68 percent as much as in the first quarter, personal consumption for durable goods grew by 58 percent of the first quarter rate, and residential fixed investment slowed to only 44 percent of the first quarter growth. Sectors with accelerated growth in the second quarter included personal consumption of nondurable goods and of services, which increased at annual rates of 9.6 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, and Federal purchases of goods and services, which increased at an annual rate of 47.9 percent.

This report presents nearly all structural data available from explosion tests of 20-psi mine ventilation seals and concrete-block ventilation stoppings that were conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health during 1997?2008. Although the seals tested were designed to meet the former federal 20-psi pressure design standard, the structural information contained herein on these seal tests will facilitate the analysis and design of coal mine seals that meet the new explosion pressure design criteria of 50 and 120 psi as set forth in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)?s final rule on ?Sealing of Abandoned Areas.? The seal testing data are organized into six broad categories of seal structures based on the materials used and the construction method for those 20-psi seals: 1. Concretelike materials with steel reinforcement and reinforcement bar anchorage to rock 2. Pumpable cementitious materials of varying compressive strengths with no steel reinforcement and no hitching 3. Articulated structures such as solid-concrete-block seals and ventilation stoppings made of solid and hollow-core concrete blocks 4. Polymer and aggregate materials without hitching 5. Wood-crib-block seals with or without hitching 6. Articulated structures such as lightweight blocks with or without hitching This summary contains data on 52 different structures in the above categories?44 seals and 8 ventilation stoppings. The structural data sets include the applied loading on the tested seal represented by a pressure-time curve and, when available, the measured seal response represented by a displacement-time curve. The structural data sets enable the calibration and verification of numerical models of seal behavior at the 20-psi level, which may then facilitate future structural analyses of seal designs for the new 50- and 120-psi explosion pressure design criteria.

"While wearable technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply wearable technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry.This article discusses the value proposition of using wearable technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to wearable technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear, the first wearable technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on his or her primary task and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: timecritical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some human-computer interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the interruption, reaction and comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (Fig. 1)."

Mercury, or quicksilver as it is often called, has many applications in modern technology. Used principally in electrical apparatus, industrial contol instruments, insecticides and fungicides, electrolytic preparation of chlorine and caustic soda, chemical processes, pharmaceuticals, and dental preparations, the liquid metal has unusual properties that make it a preferred material for many industrial uses. United States consumption of mercury during the past 40 years shows a rising trend. In all except 4 years, U.S. production has been less than the domestic requirement, and imports, principally from Spain, Italy, and Mexico, have supplied most of the deficit. After World War II, domestic output decreased rapidly until 1950, when it was the lowest in the 100 years covered by production records. Higher mercury prices since 1950 have reversed the decline in domestic output and reduced the gap between U.S. production and consumption. Domestic output in 1958 was the highest in peacetime since 1883; however, the nation still imported 28 percent of its mercury requirements from 1950 to 1960 the price of mercury was high as a result of industrial applications of the mercury cell, the impact of the cold war and the Korean war, and the Government stockpiling program. The stockpiling program, in effect, put a floor under mercury prices even though only 9,428 flasks of domestic mercury went into the stockpile under the original program which ran from July 1954 to December 31, 1957. Under an extension of the program, an additional 17,463 flasks was purchased.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

This year of 1926 marks the 40th. anniversary of nickel mining in Canada. Although the first nickel mine of the Sudbury basin was discovered in 1883, it was not until 1886 that the Canadian Copper Company was organized and actually began to mine copper-nickel ore from the Lady McDonald, Stobie and Evans mines. The intervening years have witnessed some exceedingly interesting nickel history, particularly interesting and gratifying as well to Canadians. Forty years ago, at the inception of Canadian nickel mining, the world's consumption of that metal was about 1000 tons per annum and this was supplied largely from New Caledonia ores refined in France. This nickel was used principally for the production of nickel-silver, coinage alloys, and for nickel-plating. No processes were then known for refining the Sudbury ores nor for the separation of copper from nickel. Consequently, the pioneers in Canadian nickel mining faced the double problem of finding a method of treating their ores, and of finding a market for the nickel when and if they could extract it.
