A Discussion of the Paper by Mr. H. A. Guess, read at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1904. MR. JOSEPH P. GAZZAM, Germiston, Transvaal, So. Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :-About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri, I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. A number of determinations of lead in mill-tailings were made in the year 1891; a few of these results are given in Table I.

On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

Integrated mining information and process control systems can reduce information delays, enhance decision making and improve the responsiveness of mining operations to, for example, variations in market conditions, mineral grades and ground conditions. This paper examines developments in the areas of: monitoring, data analysis and diagnosis,' communications systems; integrated mining support system;, and process and machine control. It concludes that the development of a comprehensive information technology plan is fundamental to the phased implementation of these technologies. In addition, hardware and software standards and concurrent digital design and simulation practices in selected manufacturing industries are examined and concluded to have relevance to the mining industry. Integrated information and process control systems will lead to emergence of the "digital mine". Such advances in mining information infrastructure as well as mining equipment will enable mining operations to shift from mass production methods to leaner production techniques. "Lean mining" aims to enhance and accelerate cash flow over the life of a mine by focusing on reduction of' throughput times; stockpiles for volume and quality control; and wastage and rework.

Lieut. Maxwell E. Erdory, now with the Army of Occupation in France, writes as follows: "The 602d Engrs., many of whose officers are members of the Institute, started its active service in France at Avocourt, where we built a road across `No Man's Land.' This road from Avocourt to Montfaucon started us on a career of road building which lasted from Sept. 26 to Nov. 9. The engineer in war has no working hours. Our first job meant 50 hr. continuous work, a layoff of 4 hr. and 18 hr. more. That was our initiation in this war game. "Back in the States we practised building trenches, dugouts, and underground shelters of all sorts. In France we were unfortunate enough to come upon the scene when the so-called open warfare started. That made all the above unnecessary. Roads was the cry and our job was to see that all the artillery got their roads and got over them. "I might mention here that the roads of France, which were in excellent condition except for numerous shell holes, w re one of the leading factors in the rapid termination of the war. "We built a narrow-gage railroad from Romagne to Landre St. George which cost us a few men. At Stenay we did our first bridge building. We built nine bridges across the Meuse, capable of carrying tanks, in 18 hr. The next day the American army crossed these bridges on their way to Virton, Belgium, and the Rhine. " Our course from Virton, Belgium, took us through Longwy, Musson, and Athus, in which towns I inspected the steel plants. In Musson as well as Longwy the Germans had destroyed most of the blast furnaces. This destruction began in August, 1917. In Athus the furnaces were in good condition, the Germans having removed all motors land electrical apparatus, rendering the plant inoperative. I have taken several photos of interest of these plants. "It is but fitting that I say that the engineer in this war has contributed much toward its success but the "Doughboy" is its hero and we engineers one and all say "All hail the Doughboy."

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. The removal of sulfur from leach residues has been practised in the zinc industry using a combination of flotation and hot melt filtration. The process is highly dependent on the nature of the concentrate and the subsequent residue. When the mineral constituency of the residue alters, the process can encounter significant operational challenges. An alternate method of converting elemental sulfur to water-soluble polysulfides was applied to leach residue from Vale's nickel demonstration plant in Argentia, Newfoundland. Reaction parameters, sulfur purity and other key indicators are discussed as is the potential commercial application.

The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

"Helical piles are gaining popularity as foundations for new construction as well as retrofitting option for deficient foundations. More recently, large diameter helical piles are used to support structures in regions characterized with high seismic hazard. Even though they have proven to be viable in seismic areas such as New Zealand, where they experienced little damage during the Christchurch earthquake, the knowledge about their seismic analysis and performance is largely lacking. Therefore, there is a need for comprehensive study to evaluate their performance under seismic loading. The current objective of this study is to investigate the performance of helical piles through a full-scale testing program that was performed at the NEES/UCSD Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LLHPOST). The experimental setup involved ten steel piles of different configurations installed in dry sand. The piles were loaded with different masses and were subjected to different earthquake signals to simulate different dynamic behavior. This paper compares the performance of different moment curve fitting methods used to interpret the test data. Furthermore, the effects of different frequency content of loading on the pile response is illustrated in terms of deflection along the shafts of tested piles with different configurations.INTRODUCTIONEarthquakes are a major hazard for structures situated in seismic regions, and dynamic loading must be a design consideration. Successful design of a foundation system entails providing a safe and economic foundation solution to resist earthquake loading. Different foundation options have been used to support buildings in high seismic regions. Helical piles represent a viable foundation option that offers several advantages in terms of ease of installation, lower cost and environmental impact, ability to approximate the axial capacity directly from torque readings and more (Perko 2009). However, they are not typically considered as an option in many seismic regions. Meanwhile, several buildings supported on helical piles in New Zealand have survived the Christchurch earthquake with negligible damage, which encourages performing further research to understand the behaviour of these piles under seismic loading.A helical pile consists of a steel shaft fitted with a steel helix/helices. The helical pile is installed by applying torque to its head via mechanical torque. Nowadays, helical piles are used in a wide range of applications such as foundations for light posts and residential houses. The static behaviour of helical piles has been studied extensively and is relatively well understood (Tsuha and Aoki 2010; Mittal et al. 2010; Sakr 2011; Elsherbiny and El Naggar 2013; El Sharnouby and El Naggar 2012; Elkasabgy and El Naggar 2015; Weidong et al. 2015 and Bagheri and Naggar 2015) However, the dynamic and seismic behaviours of helical piles is seldom investigated (Elkasabgy and El Naggar 2013). This underscores the knowledge gap currently present regarding the seismic behaviour of helical piles."

"LocationThe Strathcona mill ofFalconbridge Limited is located in Onaping, Ontario, 50 km northwest of Sudbury.GeneralOre from the Falconbridge mines in the Sudbury Basin (Strathcona, Fraser, Onaping, Craig and Thayer Lindsley mines) is processed through the Strathcona mill with 8500 t of nickel ore and 1500 t of copper ore being treated daily. Current capacity is -3 Mt of ore at 1.8% Ni, 1.9% Cu combined grade. Custom feeds are also processed. The valuable minerals in the ore are pentlandite (FeNi)9S8, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with some cubanite (CuFe2S3) and very minor nickel sulphides/ arsenides. Cobalt is present mainly in solid solution in pentlandite. There are small but economically important concentrations of precious metals including platinum, palladium gold, and silver. The common non-sulphide gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc, and chlorite while pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) is the major gangue sulphide. The pyrrhotite contains between 0.6% and 1.2% nickel in solid solution and additional nickel as exsolved pentlandite in micron sized blebs. The nickel and copper ores are batch-crushed in a two stage dry crushing plant and then ground in separate circuits. Concentration by flotation and magnetic separation produces a nickel concentrate assaying approximately 16% nickel plus copper and a copper concentrate assaying 30% copper and 0.4% nickel. The nickel concentrate is trucked as a slurry to the Falconbridge smelter while the copper concentrate is trucked as filter cake to the Kidd Division of Falcon bridge"

Federal Regulations require that coal producers conduct a written, in-house investigation with every lost time injury accident. Besides their obvious value in accident prevention, competently conducted investigations can provide a number of additional benefits to include positive supervisor involvement, the control of rising worker's compensation costs and a measure of protection from civil/criminal proceedings. The paper describes such topics as MSHA minimum requirements, investigator selection and training, accident site procedures, witness interview techniques and the management review process. The reader is also presented with a number of information resources available through MSHA, the National Safety Council and other sources.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) AT a number of mines in eastern Nicaragua, 3.5- and 5-ft. Huntington mills are used for grinding gold-ore after a preliminary breaking in jaw-crushers. The smaller mills are made sectional to facilitate transportation to the more difficultly accessible mines. The capacity of the smaller mills is about 20 or 25 per cent. that of the larger, but in proportion to the quantity of ore ground they require more power and are subject to greater wear. The notes herein given are from records of the performance of the larger mills, but, in general, apply to the smaller also. THE NATURE OF THE ORE. The ore occurred as a series of flat veins in a highly-decomposed rock, probably alaskite. The primary mineralization comprised pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and quartz; the oxidation-products of which were chiefly hydrated iron oxide or limonite, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite. The kaolinization of the feldspar of the country resulted in the admixture of a great quantity of clay with the oxidized ore. The quartz was sandy, imbedded in the clay; and probably the greater part represented the residue from the crushed rock in the fissures after leaching, and kaolinization of the feldspar. There was little vein-quartz in the unaltered primary sulphide ore. Only the oxidized ore was mined for the gold that it contained in amounts that averaged $4 per ton. No specks of gold were ever seen in the ore, and the gold obtained by panning was always exceedingly fine. The amalgamation-bullion was about 800 fine in gold and 60 to 80 in silver. The ore delivered at the mill contained from 5 to 15 per cent. of moisture; during the rainy season the quantity was much greater. The moisture and clay made the ore so sticky that it had to be raked over steeply-inclined grizzlies; it hung in the ore-bins,

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires that each operator of a coal mine shall take accurate samples of the amount of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere to which each miner is exposed, a measure designed to prevent the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. This textbook manual is used in the training of personnel to operate respirable dust sampling devices and to conduct sampling programs. It contains the portions of the act applicable to respirable dust standards, the procedures to be followed to insure compliance with Federal regulations, and descriptions of sampling devices.

"Gas management has always been a major concern for the ventilation officer of any gassy mine. With an increase of mining depth and gas content, there is a great demand for the development of in-seam drilling sites where boreholes can be drilled for the pre-drainage of gas prior to longwall operation. The ventilation and gas management in the drilling site therefore becomes a critical component of mine safety. In this study, advanced computational fluid dynamics technology was adopted to investigate the aerodynamics of gas emitting from the drilling site and boreholes during normal drilling and, in the case of a sudden gas inrush, from the borehole. In addition, the impact of different ventilation controls on gas removal in the drilling site was investigated. Modelling results indicate that gas accumulation zones could be formed if the ventilation system fails to deliver sufficient airflow to the drill site, especially when a sudden gas inrush from a borehole occurs. The configurations of brattice, layout of ventilation tubes and the gas emission rate all have a significant effect on the gas distribution. Due to variations in site-specific conditions, it would be desirable to conduct modelling studies to assess the effects and efficiencies of a ventilation design for the varying environment on-site before carrying out drilling practice. The recovery of manganese from lower-grade resources has been studied for a number of years. Of key importance in prior work was the discovery that higher-valent manganese can be readily leached with sulfurous acid. This eliminates the need for high-temperature reduction roasting that is conventionally used in processing high-grade material. High-temperature roasting is energy intensive, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide and would not be economical for processing lower grade material. While the prior work provides important information for extracting manganese from lower-grade resources, the production of unwanted byproducts and high water and energy usage has limited its commercial use. This paper describes the results from laboratory work that demonstrate solutions to problems that to this point have precluded commercial development. Preliminary mass and energy balances show that a significant opportunity exists in producing manganese with this hydrometallurgical scheme in a low-cost, environmentally friendly manner. The emphasis of the work is on low water use, low overall energy use and economic destruction of unwanted byproducts.

"Mining has always played a key role in the improvement of the quality of life, but also, it has been a source of environmental and social conflict. Despite the great progress in social responsibility and sustainability experienced in recent decades, the public image of mining remains low and mining projects and operations must face growing difficulties and demands, which results in increasing capital and operating costs. In practice, the objective of a mining company is to create value for its shareholders and therefore, the best approach to Sustainability would be to foster those drivers aligning sustainability and shareholders value, this is, the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). Only under this assumption, convergence of corporate strategy and sustainability may be assured. This paper discusses partial results of a Research Project being carried out at the Catholic University of Chile, aiming to develop a social and economic model for the effective integration of the values of sustainable development in the strategy of mining companies and their stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Mining is fundamental for the wellbeing of our everyday life. But as important as these benefits are for humanity, the mining Industry has had negative environmental and social impacts. For these reasons, a closer relationship between “Sustainable Development and Mining” is more necessary than ever. The Brundtland definition of Sustainable development does not have a clear relationship with mining, but it provides the context. Under a strict interpretation of the Bruntlandt definition, stating that “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [10], mining would not be sustainable because the minerals are non-renewable resources. However, this research focuses on how mining can contribute to the sustainable development in the territories where the projects take place. In other words, this research follows the publication titled “Berlin II Guidelines for Mining and Sustainable Development” [9], which stated that “A mining project that is developed, operated and closed in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner could contribute to sustainable development. Critical to this goal is ensuring that benefits of the project are employed to develop the region in a way that will survive long after the mine is closed”. The potential conflicts between mining stakeholders arises from the interpretation of the concept “developing, operating and closing a project in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner”, and the impact on the economic objectives of mining companies. Nevertheless, the ability of mining companies to control new demands and expectations of stakeholders has threatened the implementation and continuity of their projects and operations. To deal with these issues this research analyses the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). It refers to the process leading to a business and social-economic environment whereby shareholders value may only be optimum under a business strategy which fully integrates the values of sustainability. In the model proposed, the Business Case will start when the benefits are higher than the costs. Benefits not only associated with efficient use of resources, also benefits associated with avoiding difficulties to continue with the mining projects such as strikes, heavy penalties, loss of investment, and so on."

Research on coal cutting at the Bureau of Mines Twin Cities Research Center (TCRC) has evolved from a purely mechanical approach, specifically to reduce dust or frictional methane ignitions, into an understanding of the complexity of the cutting system relationships. Achieving an understanding of these relationships requires a wide variety of testing techniques and equipment. Laboratory facilities and the associated equipment exist for shallow to deep cutting in both coal and coal-inclusive rock with any desired bit type. Research efforts with this equipment are providing insight for significant advances to help solve the problems of pneumoconiosis and frictional ignition. This effort will ultimately affect both respirable dust and methane ignitions at the face through better bit design and will increase the salable percent of run-of-mine (ROM) coal processed. It will also affect the design of rotary-drum cutting continuous mining machines (CMM) and longwall machines. This report describes the main features of the coal cutting research facilities at TCRC.

Many of the transport phenomena encountered in proton exchange membrane fuel cells occur intrinsically at the microscale level. Physically representative models that fully account for the salient physico-chemical and transport processes in PEM fuel cells are necessary to achieve truly predictive models that can be used with confidence to: (i) gain a better understanding of in-situ processes and couplings, (ii) explore new concepts, and (iii) support design and optimization. The development of more general, rationally based macroscale models requires use of knowledge on the microscale level to provide guidance, and to determine the required parameters and coefficients (model "constants"). In this paper we present a new membrane transport model, the binary friction membrane model (BFM2), recently developed to account for coupled protonic and water transport in polymer membranes. This general model is based on rational and physical consideration, removes several of the limitations of the empirical models used to date, and is formulated for all purfluoro-sulfonic acid membranes. The use of the BFM2 in a fuel cell model is illustrated highlighting significant performance predictions compared to existing empirical model. The second part of the paper addresses the fundamentals of two-phase transport in hydrophobic gad diffusion media. Computational and experimental visualizations resolving the microscale dynamics of water transport between the fibres of a GDL are presented, revealing transport mechanisms that are, contrary to assumptions used to date, dominated by fingering and channeling.

The Mount Isa Rocky Paste Fill (RPF) was one of the five fill options investigated for the Enterprise Mine filling between June 1996 and September 1996. Co-disposal of deslimed cemented tailings (CHF) and suitably graded rockfill (RF) in certain ratios produced the rocky paste fill. The RPF behaved like a cohesive paste with very high proportion of rockfill in the mix. Several large-scale mixing trials and drop tests proved that the rocky pastefill results in a homogeneous fill mass after placement. Segregation of RF was a common problem with MIM's traditional cemented rock fill (CRF), which is a combination of CHF and RF. The segregation was eliminated and a non-segregating paste like fill was created by optimising the particle size distribution of RF, and combining the RF and the CHF in optimum ratios. In rocky pastefill, the excess water in the cemented deslimed tailings slurry is taken up by the rockfill as the surface moisture on the rockfill particles and also as pore water between the particles. This results in thickening of the CHF, and the resultant mix is a non-segregating cohesive paste, which can easily spread to any horizontal distance inside a stope at a very low surface angle. The rocky pastefill releases no free water and relatively more pervious than the standard CHF due to rockfill component. With an average cement addition of 1.5 to 2% the rocky pastefill can develop higher strengths over 1Mpa. The rocky paste fill is applicable in many situations and can accommodate a variety of coarser materials that would be available in different mine sites. This paper present the research work and the experience associated with the rocky paste fill, and gives clear design principles for any potential users.

"Czochralski pulling has been a very widely used process for growing single crystals for electronic and optical applications. Dopant segregation can significantly degrade the quality and yield of single crystals. We have used the floating-crucible technique for segregation control in Czochralski pulling, our floating crucibles being unique in that the melt passageway is very long. As such, dopant back diffusion is suppressed, even when the cross-section of the melt passageway has to be relatively large to help the melt go through or when the pulling rate is very low. Single crystals of model materials K-doped NaN03 and Pb-doped Sn have been grown with very uniform dopant concentrations. IntroductionSingle crystals of electronic and optical materials are often doped with a small amount of impurities to develop required physical properties, e.g., P and B in Si for n-type and p-type semiconductors, respectively, and Nd in YAG lasers. Dopant segregation can result in nonuniform physical properties, thus degrading the quality and yield of the resultant crystals.Figure 1 is an illustration of the conventional Czochralski process for crystal growth. Several techniques have been developed to control dopant segregation in Czochralski pulling, including the push-pull technique (1,2), the drop-pull technique (3-7) and the floating-crucible technique (8-13). The first two techniques require precise sensing devices and feedback control systems to keep the feeding rate equal to the pulling rate. The last technique is simple since the feeding rate is automatically equal to the pulling rate."

Major William R. Grunow, in a brief account off his military services, says: "I take pleasure in informing you that since my return from France I have been stationed at Camp A. A. Humphreys, Va., and am now on duty as a Senior Instructor at the Engineer Officers' Training School. While in France, I served as a company commander in the 305th Engineers and was later ordered to return to the United States for assignment to new troops. Upon arrival in the United States, I received my majority." P. F. Rodegerdts gives us the following account of his military service: "I enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps in San Francisco on Feb. 12, 1918. On February 10, I was ordered to Cambridge, Mass., where I was enrolled for the course in technical aircraft construction given at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After successfully completing the course of instruction, I spent six weeks in practical construction of seaplanes at the Curtiss aeroplane factory in Buffalo.
