Advantages of this equipment The ever increasing demand for bulk materials such as ore, coal, lignite, oilsand, oilshale and bauxite requires mainly an opencast operation. To exploit these materials huge amounts of overburden and partings must be transportes by means of conveyors, trucks or trains. When analyzing the various opencast mines it can be established that there exist only two basic types of mining systems, i. e., the discontinuous strip mining system as used in the USA (Fig. 1) and the continuous mining system as is commonly applied in Europe. The reason why these two mining methods have been developed parallel to and independently of each other to such a high technical standard results from the varying geological conditions of the mineral deposits.

"Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. It highlights how—in addition to using the larger crushers now available—maximizing the utilization percentages in each of the four stages of the rock size reduction circuit will assist in meeting the larger production requirements of existing and new mining operations. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year. INTRODUCTION Are larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? Boyd (2002) predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available. The rock size reduction process from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized in four stages: • Stage 1: Mining (rock breakage and fragmentation) • Stage 2: Pre-screening (scalping) • Stage 3: Primary crushing • Stage 4: Fine crushing (secondary, tertiary and quaternary) Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once the project design criteria and the mine plan have been established, the circuit’s utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stakeholders in the selection of the final comminution circuit, and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit. This paper focuses on the four stages of a rock size reduction circuit from the mine to the mill, equipment selection, various ore and waste handling flowsheets, and improvements in crusher station design, all with the purpose of maximizing availability and plant utilization percentages. What is a large tonnage? From 1907 to 1914, the American Panama Canal excavated 300 million tonnes of material in 7 years (History of the Panama Canal, Wikipedia). Today’s large mining operations can move the same material in 10 months, using large crushers or multiple crushers for ore processing and large crushers and a mixture of truck haulage and conveyors for handling the large waste tonnages. This study examines the impact of low-temperature heat-treatment cycles on microstructure and corrosion performance of Direct Metal Laser Sintered (DMLS) AlSi10Mg_200C alloy. It is known that the morphology and the size of eutectic silicon are the two most critical factors affecting mechanical properties of the AlSi10Mg alloy. Although high-temperature heat-treatment cycles are common practice for the strengthening of the cast Al-Si-Mg alloys, in the case of DMLS fabricated AlSi10Mg alloy, high-temperature solutionizing and low temperature annealing cycles result in mechanical properties degradation primarily due to a dramatic decrease in the solubility of Si in the super-saturated a-Al matrix of the as-printed alloy. In this study, low-temperature heat-treatment cycles that only promote precipitation of Mg2Si accompanied by the interruption of the silicon network were investigated. SEM and XRD analysis were utilized to observe the evolution of microstructure after different annealing heat-treatments at 200, 250, 300, and 350°C for 3 h. Increasing the heat-treatment temperature contributed to the Si networks interruption and an increased precipitation of Mg2Si phase. Low-temperature annealing from 200 to 350°C was found to promote the homogeneity of the microstructure characterized by a uniform distribution of eutectic Si in ??-Al matrix. Additionally, in order to investigate the impact of different heat-treatment cycles on corrosion resistivity of DMLS-AlSi10Mg_200C, the potentiodynamic polarization testing and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were performed in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The results revealed more uniformly distributed pitting attack on the corroded surface by further increase in the annealing temperature, which was attributed to the uniformity of Si dispersion. In comparison, low temperature annealing at 200°C led to a penetrating selective corrosion attack along the melt pool boundaries, resulting in a higher corrosion rate associated with the lower absolute value of impedance of the protective passive film on the surface.

"The exorbitant price of the land in the metropolis has restricted the horizontal expansion and compelled the owners, the developers and the engineers to opt for vertical expansion. This has resulted in the construction of high rises by extending floors of the existing buildings and developing the new ones for which deep excavation is a must. The multistoried buildings up to a certain height can be founded on shallow depth if the soil beneath can withstand the load. If not, the soil can be stabilized by the latest improvement technology to change the properties of soil to cater the desired load of the superstructures. By such practice the cost and time of completion of the substructures can be reduced in comparison to the substructures needed for deep excavation.The necessity of deep excavation cannot be ignored to create housings, underground parking lots and the other public amenities for the urban migrants in the metropolis.Although most of the metropolis have underground mapping the developers, before starting excavation should be hundred percent sure about the alignment and depth of the utilities so that the excavators do not snap the same to bring cut in water supply, power lines, telephone lines etc, resulting in hue and cry in the neighborhoods of the metropolis due to no availability of the essential services The building/structures coming on the influence zones of the deep excavation should be monitored in all sequences of excavations. In case of building underground corridors for rail or road through open deep excavation under a traffic road the developers, before commencing excavation should shift/divert the dry and wet utilities coming on the way of excavation to suitable locations. The surface traffic need to be diverted either temporarily to an adjacent alternative road or allowed to pass over a decking built over the trench of excavation for the affected length of construction. The soil support system is necessary longitudinally on the two sides covering the width of trench for building corridors. In case of building substructures of flyovers built at different plots along the alignment of the flyover or a multistoried complex built at an isolated plot, the soil support system would be necessary on all the sides covering the plot of construction.The material of construction of soil support depends on the depth, type of soil and the type of permanent structure to be developed. Probable geo-hazards inviting casualties in the deep excavation projects occur due to caving of soil, leakage of wet utilities, seepage through honey comb concrete surfaces, failure of pump used for dewatering etc. A detailed comprehensive planning, management and determination of the project authority is essential for marginalizing the casualties. These prevent unforeseen expenditure in mitigation and help to control the time and the cost over run of overall project. The engineer at site should be more a professional manager than an engineer at site. He should be conversant with the safety and environment rules and regulations applicable to deep underground projects."

The drive to maximise performance, reduce maintenance times, improve safety of operation and maintenance on mining equipment while keeping both operational and capital costs down has provided good nourishment to the creative thinking of designers of skip loading facilities for hoisting systems. Early systems were as simple as manual loading which evolved into a surge bin feeding a skip through a chute finally maturing into a measuring flask discharging into a chute to feed the skip and more recently high capacity skip feed conveyors. This paper will compare the concepts of the skip loading flask and the skip loading conveyor systems over a range of winding distances and hoisted tonnages. The comparison will draw on actual installations and review operational, maintenance and safety. An order of magnitude capital cost estimate will be used to complete the financial comparison. This will enable the reader to understand the concepts and costs and assist in selecting the appropriate skip loading system.

The lead .smelter at Cominco's operations at Trail, B.C. has been undergoing. a modernization program since 1986. In that year a contract agreement was reached with German-based Lurgi GmbH which allows Cominco to construct and operate a lead smelter using Lurgi's QSL process. Cominco Engineering Services Ltd. (CESL), a subsidiary of Cominco Ltd., was contracted to provide project management, engineering, procurement and construction management? services for the project. The new smelter replaces the existing sinter-blast furnace plant ?and will have a capacity of up to 1601000 tonnes per year of refined lead. This new smelting proc.ess results in significant operating cost reductions and major environmental .improvements. Start-up of the new plant is scheduled for the fall of 1989. The metallurgy and the operating parameters, important to the design of the new smelter, are described together with projected deportments of lead, zinc, silver and minor metals. A plant description, will be given for the following major areas that make up the modernization project: the pressure filter operation for the preparation of ,zinc leach residues feed material, the QSL reactor and boiler itself, together with its feed system and process gas treatment, and the drossing plant with a new continuous drossing furnace and oxygen softening and thallium removal. Slag from the QSL reactor will be treated in existing slag furnaces until a subsequent second phase of the modernization is completed in the 1990s.

The phosphate mining industry is a highly competitive one, one in which survival depends on the plant's ability to produce at costs equal to, or below, the competition. The solution toward getting costs down is usually one of scaling up the plants to get the most tons through at the lowest possible cost. Control of these plants has been an art. Few of them are well instrumented because until a few years ago reliable instrumentation was non-existent. International Minerals and Chemical Corporation was a pioneer in applying computer techniques to ore reserves analysis and mine planning and the success in these areas led to the question of whether we could not extend the advantages of computer processing into the plant itself. There was a great deal of doubt on the operator's end that this could be done successfully because of the lack of instrumentation and the fact that plant control was largely an art that was learned only after many years of experience. However, in 1965 the instrumentation picture began to look up and the new generation of process computers just coming on the market were considerably lower in cost than the previous ones. A preliminary study of the installation costs and the probable benefits that could be realized from computer control convinced us that a process control computer should be seriously considered for a new phosphate mining plant which was being designed.

We will bet you that, without prior programming within 10 minutes, we can design and simulate a 10,000 unit operation separation circuit. We will even do it at your place. We do it all the time. [ ] There are no tricks; we do it in a spreadsheet. We do it in those user friendly spreadsheet such as Quattro Pro. Spreadsheets must be user friendly. Accountants use them as do managers, business men, lawyers, doctors and salesmen. What these users seldom realize, is how powerful a mathematical tool a spreadsheet is. Among their other capabilities, spreadsheets can do a finite element analysis. That is why they are useful for accounting. That is also why they are more useful to engineers in the mineral industry. Spreadsheets are ideally suited for the engineering problems in the mineral industry. We have used then for solving problems in: a) mine ventilation; b) circuit design and optimization of dense media, flotation and sizing; c) comminution circuit design; d) shaking tables; e) Humphrey spirals; f) sluice ways and channel flow; g) lock particle and liberation problems; h) tunnel and shaft stress problems; i) cascadograph simulation; j) complex heat transfer problems; k) flow in porous media; and sheet flotation (Figure 1). Mineral industry problems presented on or with a spreadsheet are an excellent teaching instrument, problem statement and solution tools and sales devices. Spreadsheets answer easily, quickly and reliably many mineral industry engineering problems. What makes spreadsheets so useful to the mineral industry. The short answer is: they are easy to use; mineral industry problems fit the spreadsheet format. Those reasons are part of the answer. The real answer lies with the structure of the spreadsheet itself. Essentially, a spreadsheet is a "finite element analysis" form of computer software. Many mineral industry problems are readily solved by finite element analysis techniques. While some in the mineral industry may think they have never heard of finite element analysis, most use it weekly if not daily. Any profit and loss statement is essentially a finite element instrument. In fact, any array of numbers where one number is related to another may be construed as a finite element analysis product. Finite element analysis is a common daily activity. To get an appreciation of a finite element analysis, think of a monthly sales forecast for the next year. For each product and for each month, there exists a dollar figure for the forecasted amount of sales. In the forecast statement, for a given product in a given month, there is a "box" where the forecasted figure is presented. The forecast figure in that box was arrived at through some type of formula. The formula probably required some information from other neighboring boxes in the master forecast statement. Voila, one has a finite element analysis. Today the analysis would be done in a spreadsheet. A typical mineral industry problem is ventilation in an underground mine. Think of a rectangular room and pillar mining operation. Each room has air entering at a given pressure and velocity and air leaving at another pressure and velocity. During steady state, the air entering and leaving the room is determined by conditions in the adjacent rooms. One can readily model the room and pillar mine layout in a spreadsheet, and then find the flow in and out of each room at steady state. Change the flow by moving a brattice cloth or blocking off a path way and one gets a new air flow profile. Change the numbers on the spreadsheet that reflect

Electro-spark deposition (ESD) has recently generated a great deal of interest in processing aerospace materials. This is due to its potential for joining and repairing difficult-to-weld precipitation strengthened nickel-based superalloys without having problems of welding cracking that often plaque these materials. The short duration of current pulses involved in the process combined with the intermittent contact results in extremely rapid thermal cycle that produces nearly no heat affected zone in the substrate material. The microstructure of electro-spark deposited superalloy was meticulously studied in this work by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that in contrast to general assumption, the extreme rapid cooling rates involved in the ESD process did not produce partition-less solidification that is devoid of second phase microconstituents in the material. The secondary microconstituents were found formed along the intercellular regions of the solidification microstructure. The nature of these particles and the possible implication of their formation on mechanical properties of ESD processed material are reported and discussed.

Status of ISO 14000 standards. The ISO 14000 are voluntary international standards providing a frame-work that allows a company to integrate an effective environmental-management system (EMS) into its operations. The purpose of an EMS is to provide a systematic procedure to identify the environmental aspects of a company's activities, evaluate any significant impacts and use the information to set objectives and targets toward continuous improvement of the company's environmental compliance and performance. In addition to the specifications for certification, ISO 14000 can be used as a guide to develop an effective environmental-management system or for self-declaration. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation founded in 1947 to promote the development of international manufacturing, trade and communication standards. The organization is now represented in 118 countries, with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) representing the United States. The principal goals of the ISO is "to promote the development of standardization and related ac¬tivities in the world with a view toward facilitating the international exchange of goods and services and to develop cooperation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity." ISO develops standards with input from government and industry. Because the standards are voluntary, there are no legal requirements to pressure countries to adopt them. However, many governments, industries and US agencies are adopting the ISO standards as a requirement for business trans¬actions, thereby, compelling suppliers to adopt ISO standards. These business and market forces, which are likely to be strategic business issues in the 21st century global marketplace, are imposing the need to develop a systematic approach to environmental management. The ISO 14000 series evolved from a United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It includes a broad range of elements: the basic environmental management system, environmental auditing criteria for internal and external auditors, criteria for environmental performance evaluation (EPE), environmental labeling criteria and life-cycle assessment methodologies. The standards comprise two categories: organization evaluation standards and product oriented standards (Table 1). The ISO 14001 specifications contain the requirements for developing an environmental-management system that may be objectively audited for certification. The ISO 14004 standard provides guidance on interpreting the ISO 14000 specifications for the development and implementation of the EMS and for coordination with the management system of the company. On Sept. 1, 1996, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) signed a formal agreement to create a new entity called the National Accreditation Program (NAP). To obtain certification, a company must fulfill the requirements outlined in ISO 14001. It is required that "a third party give written assurance that a company's EMS meets all the requirements of ISO 14001." Preparing for ISO 14000 can include subscribing to voluntary environmental initiatives; learning from ISO 9000 quality-management experiences; and utilizing information from recognized training courses, publications and numerous Internet resources. Once committed to an EMS, the management should provide sufficient resources to achieve continuous environmental-performance improvement, as outlined in an environmental policy. A thorny issue now being debated concerns the potential liabilities of documenting the environmental performance of a company. General impact of the ISO 14000 EMS standards. With increasing stakeholder awareness, costly end-of-pipe pollution-control approaches and the success of ISO 9000 quality-management standards, the ISO 14000 EMS standards are being adopted by companies and governments worldwide. The United States and Canada have well-established programs. In Europe, countries differ but are firmly committed toward environmental-management standards (BS 7750, EMAS and ISO 14000). The Department of Environmental Protec¬tion of the State of Pennsylvania is using ISO 14000 as a vehicle to develop a closer working relationship with industry, and it is anticipated that this policy will eventually lead to fewer environmental site inspections for those companies with ISO 14001 certification. This paper describes the results from computer runs simulating 24 different mine ventilation configurations with the main fan situated first at the top of the upcast shaft and then at the top of the downcast shaft. Real air was used, with evaporation, condensation and heat exchange. The results showed that power requirements for the forcing fan were up to 20% less than for the exhausting fan for equal mass flow rates.

Most metallurgical industries generate toxic waste that must be treated prior to being released to the environment. However, in a lot of cases, the waste materials are poorly characterized or the analytical results are not well interpreted. These shortcomings often result in the development of inefficient industrial procedures, thus causing economic waste and difficulty meeting environmental regulations. Fortunately, a wide range of analytical techniques are available to guide researchers and engineers into making sound process development decisions. In this work, an industrial selenium and mercury removal process is used as an example to illustrate the application of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) on solid waste. Furthermore, samples of analytical results are presented and interpreted and the modifications to the industrial process that resulted are explained. Finally, a brief description of the advantages and limitations of the aforementioned analytical techniques is given with an emphasis on industrial solid waste material.

"In the process of Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) for underground coal mining, geologists evaluate the effects of various geologic and geotechnical conditions to assist with optimization of mine productivity and with selection of more favorable areas for future development. The methodology involves correlation of multiple geologic factors (such as overburden depth, proximity to sandstone channels, and areas with weak immediate roof strata) with conditions encountered during mining (roof falls, floor heave, pillar spalling, etc.). Such studies yield maps that identify areas where mining is likely to be difficult and allow mining engineers to foresee favorable and unfavorable mining areas when planning new or expanding mines. To expand the benefits of GHM, work has been done to correlate geologic factors with room-and-pillar mining advance rates. Average mining advance rates are mapped and then correlated to different areas, as characterized by GHM. This process exposes the geological characteristics that have a material impact on mining rates of advance, improving the rates of advance into future mining areas with similar geological conditions. The final result of the work allows mine planners to not only design the mine qualitatively accounting for areas of unfavorable conditions, but also allows the mine planner to more accurately apply rates of advance for mine timing and production sequencing. The use of GHM to predict mining advance rates in unmined areas enhances the benefits of traditional hazard mapping and provides quantitative data that can be incorporated into mine sequencing models.INTRODUCTIONThe role of a geologist in the coal mining industry has evolved significantly over the last 30 to 40 years. Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) mapping for coal mines began in the late 1970s and early 1980s (Chase, Newman, and Rusnak, 2006). Since its beginnings, the GHM process has evolved significantly and continues to take on new levels of sophistication. Numerous case studies of GHM application to predict future mining conditions exist in the literature. For example, Artrip, Nelson, and Newman (1993), documents the geotechnical characterization of roof and floor for mining in the Imboden Seam in Virginia where previous mining efforts had been abandoned due to adverse mining conditions. In addition, Keim and Miller (1999) summarize evaluation of geological influences on a longwall mine in West Virginia. In both examples, significant geotechnical and geological information was available, including the opportunity to compare predicted mining conditions against actual conditions as mining progressed."

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines showed that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) was technically feasible. This work involves a more detailed investigation of the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions. The PGM species in solution identified by ultraviolet spectroscopy. Pt and Pd cyanide complexes were square were The planar in geometry, while the Rh complex was octahedral. The rate of dissolution of the PGM was also investigated using a rotating disk technique. Dissolution rates increased in the order of Rh, pt, and Pd, respectively.

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

The wide spread introduction of SAG mills into grinding circuits 20 years ago was the last development which had a major impact on the design and economics of comminution circuits. Single SAG mills were able to replace batteries of high maintenance and cost intensive crushers in order to achieve high throughput operations. Today, where the head grades of gold and copper ores are falling, there is again a strong need for a significant breakthrough to reduce investment and operating costs as well as improve metal recoveries. High-pressure grinding rolls is the new technology available to meet this challenge. HPGRÆs are state-of-the-art in several mining and minerals applications such as the grinding of iron ores and concentrates, and diamond bearing ores. Reasons for their success in these industries are overall cost reductions and improved product properties achieved by the application of high compressive forces. But these ores are relatively soft, with unconfined compressive strengths up to 150 Mpa.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coals in Dickenson County, Va. It is one in a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for the production of metallurgical coke either as mined or after beneficiation. Nearly 4 million tons of coal was produced in Dickenson County in 1955, of which approximately 2.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 5 cleaning plants. The Federal Geological Survey has estimated that nearly 1,300 million tons of measured and indicated coal reserves remained in the county as of January 1, 1951.

In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.
