The cobalt production of the Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited was supplemented, from May, 1962, to June, 1964, by processing 3,500 tons of a calcined cobalt-nickel concentrate. This paper describes the reduction roast -aqueous sulphuric acid leach process and the operating practices employed in recovering cobalt, nickel and copper from this oxidized by-product of a lead-copper operation. Incorporated in this paper is a description of how this process was integrated with the existing ammonia leach -hydrogen reduction process for the recovery of nickel and with the soluble cobaltic ammine process for the recovery of cobalt. Introduction T HE Chemical Metallurgical Division of Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has recently completed ten years of operation utilizing the ammonia leach process for the recovery of nickel, cobalt and copper from sulphide concentrates, matte and other materials amenable to this process. A continuing development program, along with the expansion of certain facilities, has enabled the refinery to attain a production rate of 31, 000,-000 pounds of nickel per year by hydrogen reduction. This represents an increase of approximately 85 per cent over the original design capacity of the plant.

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cemantitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of perma¬nent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the U.S.A. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending upon depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting in significant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating "Max-Seal" polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased several-fold in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) play a significant role in the manufacturing of catalysts, super alloys, electronics, space materials, biomedical equipments, jewellery, etc. due to their excellent electrical and thermal conductivity as well as chemical resistivity. The rising demand of PGMs in industrial applications and their limited natural resources have laid emphasis on the development of feasible and eco-friendly processes for the extraction of these metals from different sources to meet their future requirements. Present review reports commercial processes based on pyro-/hydro- and hybrid techniques to recover PGMs from various resources. The salient findings on different processes used for recovery of PGMs have been reviewed with respect to various methodologies and objectives.

Application of ore pre-treatment technologies such as Grade Engineering and in-pit ore treatment require comprehensive analysis to show proven value is being generated by switching away from the current practices. Considering most mining operations last several decades; the pre-treatment technologies must be investigated over life of mine (LOM) to truly show value was generated or lost. Therefore, a value chain flowsheet model has been usually developed to run those analysis/simulations over LOM using a set of defined ore characteristics and the operating equipment capacities. The Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) has been used for this type of LOM simulations as it has the necessary flexibility to accommodate the whole mining value chain flowsheet in one platform and provide essential computation power to run mass simulations for the given scenarios using the resource block model. This allows to forecast the value chain response over the LOM for all given scenarios in a feasible amount of time. The traditionally developed flowsheets for the analysis/simulations are usually limited to the mineral processing plant and were developed based on a single audit conducted on the plant in a very short time, e.g. several hours. The process plant is being operated with a certain ore at a certain condition during the short audits which would not reveal the true capacity of the operation equipment when ore characteristics changes. Therefore, it would be impossible to define the true capacity of the equipment and identify the constraints along the value chain. In this study, a methodology was developed to identify the constraints along the value chain and implement those in the IES flowsheet using process information. Also, the equipment models were fine-tuned to represent the true capacity of the equipment in the flowsheet using the same data set. The methodology was tested over five process plant in two operations and showed the performance forecast was significantly improved over the traditional methods being used so far. Then those high-fidelity flowsheets were used to evaluate the ore pre-treatment technologies proposed by the relevant resource company experts.

The Pennsylvania anthracite region is composed of four fields, namely, the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern. It is in the eastern part of Pennsylvania and is shown on figure 1. The anthracite industry is confronted with a crucial problem of inundation by water impounded in underground pools in many mines and by infiltration of water from streams and pools on the surface (3). The deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, and the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered as a State problem rather than a national one (1, 4, 6, 7). Anthracite was discovered in Pennsylvania in 1762, and the first mining company was formed in 1793. It was not until 1812 that anthracite began to receive recognition in the Philadelphia market as a domestic fuel, and by 1838 the annual production was nearly 1 million net tons. Since anthracite mining began, mine water has become progressively more difficult and costly to handle because of the extraction of anthracite both underground and along the outcrops of the beds, until at the present time mine drainage is a major anthracite-mining problem. Mine water is handled at the anthracite mines as follows: (a) by pumping, (b) by drainage tunnels, (c) by combination of pumping and drainage tunnels, and (d) by water hoists (hoisting water by means of large buckets) (4, 5,6, 7). This paper covers removal of the water from mines by means of pumping plants. Pumping is indispensable in the production of anthracite (5). The cost of pumping mine water has increased progressively since anthracite mining began. Some collieries have been forced to discontinue mining because of the high cost of pumping.

INTRODUCTION Additional work has been done on the CIP circuit at Creede, and a brief description of this work is presented in this paper. DREDGE The original dredge for the Bulldog was built by Al Hack, Inc. of Denver. The dredge cutter head is mounted on a boom made of 6-inch diameter pipe which is raised and lowered by a cable-pulley system. Maximum cutting depth is 8 feet. Slurry from the dredge flows through a floating 6-inch diameter pipe supported on 55-gallon drums which runs from the dredge to the shore and then to a trash screen and pumping system. See Figures 1 and 2. The cutter head, suction pump, winches for dredge movement, and all other operations are controlled from a small operations house located toward the rear of the dredge. All of the basic dredge equipment is mounted on a chassis about 8 ft x 16 ft in size. Additional buoyancy was originally provided by sealed 55-gallon drums supported along the sides of the chassis by a small wooden framework. Additional framework and barrels on the front of the chassis on either side of the cutter boom provided additional stability, particularly when digging in hard material. The dredge was quite stable, but two problems were apparent. For one, it could have been sunk by someone from the shore firing a rifle into all of the barrels. A coal-fired fluidized bed steam generator rated at 12.6 kg/s has demonstrated the industrial and institutional application of fluidized bed combustion by burning high sulfur coal in an environmentally acceptable manner within a populated area. Designed to provide steam for heating and cooling, the unit was placed into service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and has already logged 5275 hours.* The unit has consistently operated well within Washington's strict regulations governing emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulates. The Georgetown program, cofunded by the university and the US Department of Energy, has shown that fluidized bed combustion is a promising way to realize the full potential of coal, the nation's most abundant energy resource. In a fluidized bed steam generator, a layer of granular limestone is placed on top of a grid designed to prevent particles from falling through. Air is passed upward through the bed with sufficient force to lift and float the particles. At this point the bed material resembles a boiling liquid. Crushed coal is then introduced into the bed and ignited. When high sulfur coal is burned, limestone absorbs the SO2 produced. The operating temperature of a fluidized bed steam generator is relatively low (approximately 871°C). As a result, NO, formation is minimal. Another potential problem encountered in burning coal is fly ash, a form of particulate. A feature of the fluidized bed design, developed by Foster Wheeler Energy Corp., is a fly ash reinjection system. Fly ash is reintroduced into the bed where it is burned again, thereby enhancing fuel efficiency. Nearly all remaining fly ash is captured by a baghouse dust collector. At Georgetown, the fluidized bed steam generator and all auxiliary equipment are enclosed in a structure aesthetically compatible with the surrounding university complex. The steam generator has two separate beds that can be fired independently, and operation to date has been with one and two beds in service, based on steam load demand. During several operating periods, when the fluidized bed unit was the only boiler in service, it supplied all the steam required by the 18.5 hm2 of buildings on campus. Initially fired with low sulfur coal, the unit was quickly switched over to higher sulfur fuel which will be used most of the time.

As it’s a kind of strong magnetic mineral, we must adopt the weak magnetic separation equipment in magnetic separation process to realize removing Si and lowering impurities. While it cannot do very well to use the common weak magnetic separation equipment in the final cleaning to remove Si and lower impurities. At present, the plants, adopting single magnetic separation process to realize cleaning and removing Si and lowering impurities, are in the minority. Most magnetite plants adopt the flotation separation process to remove Si, lower impurities and purify the concentrate. Though with stable indexes and high Fe recovery rate, the flotation process is very complicated, high-cost and with lots of environmental pollution. If adopting the weak magnetic separation equipment can realize removing Si, lowering impurities and the final cleaning, the magnetic separation process should be the primary choice."

ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,' gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on' by individuals 01' small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

Nas indústrias petroquímicas, nucleares e farmacêuticas o avanço tecnológico tem como objetivo a segurança e confiabilidade dos equipamentos com relação à resistência mecânica e à corrosão. Atualmente, o uso dos aços inoxidáveis superausteniticos é uma solução interessante, para uma maior vida útil dos componentes industriais submetidos a ambientes agressivos, como em meios salinos. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o aparecimento de pites em um aço comercial superaustenitico de composição química aproximada 25Cr28Ni4Mo em solução salina de cloreto de sódio. O aço foi fundido e tratado termicamente por solubilização a 1050ºC por 1h com o objetivo de eliminar os precipitados. As análises microestruturais antes e após os ensaios de corrosão foram feitas por microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura. Observou-se com os ensaios eletroquímicos de Polarização linear e impedância, que o aço inoxidável superaustenítico apresenta excelente resistência à corrosão em meio salino, caracterizado também pelas imagens que não revelaram a formação de pites, mesmo quando submetidos a elevados potenciais.

"For decades, writers have expressed concern about impending shortages of professionals for Canada's minerals industry. Even under the present difficult economic circumstances, it is anticipated that the supply which will be available will not be adequate to meet the requirements in certain key areas including mining and petroleum engineering. It is evident that, unless further initiatives are taken, shortages will exist for some time.In this paper, the writer reviews information which relates to both the demand for, and the supply of, persons with advanced-level education in minerals-related disciplines. In particular, a summary is made of the information regarding supply which has been collected by the CIM General Committee on Education for many years.In concluding, the writer expresses some personal opinions regarding imbalances between demand and supply and offers some recommendations for future actions.IntroductionLast year, in a paper which was presented at the Annual General Meeting of the CIM in Calgary, the writer presented a review of the situation regarding professionally educated manpower for the minerals industry, and concluded that indications were that the gap between demand and supply was widening and that the situation could be expected to continue. Since that time, the deterioration of the nation's economy has caused an appreciable reduction in demand. Simultaneously, a further annual survey by the CIM has shown that the numbers graduating in certain specializations, notably geology and some of the technologies, are rising very rapidly. One of the great concerns of educators at present is that adequate opportunities may not exist for all of those who are now graduating.The danger of the present situation, then, is that a momentary lack of opportunities may cause potential students to choose alternative careers . Because of the lead-time which is involved, it is very possible that this could result in greater shortages during a period of economic recovery or expansion. Action must be taken to ensure that adequate numbers will be attracted to the industry, and this applies particularly to those who have already made the career decision and who are enrolled in minerals-related programs."

This paper describes several areas of application for electron beam processing of materials. The technology and use of electron beam systems in gas phase synthesis reactions are described. Gas phase reactions may be used to generate ultra- fine metal or ceramic powder that are very pure and crystalline. Among the examples presented are: the generation of nanometer sized metal powders and the gas phase synthesis of silicon carbide for silica and methane. The experimental system is described and future theoretical and experimental objectives are identified.

"The literature on flotation of oxidized ores except for patents (especially for reagents) is very sparse. The Bureau of Mines in 1936, published a circular on the subject, by Ralston and Allen. The treatment of oxides by flotation was then in its infancy, but several of the most important mining companies in the Western United States and Mexico are now operating flotation plants for treating oxidized ores. The purpose of this present circular is to review the progress made and bring the subject up to date. One of the writers of the 1916 report (Mr. Allen) has been associated with some of the most important mining companies who have put into practical operation the process of flotation of oxidized ores; among these companies are the Shhttuck Arizona Copper Co., Bisbee, Arizona (now the Shattuck Denn Co.) and the San Francisco Mines of Mexico, Ltd., San Francisco Del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico. His experience and other sources of information have been freely drawn on in pre-paring this paper. Mr. Ralston, assistant chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, contributed many valuable suggestions and criticisms.Sulphidizing Reagents for Oxidize Ores.The various reagents and methods that might possibly be used for sulphidizing were summarized by Ralston and Allen as follows:""Sulphidizing (1) by the use of hydrogen sulphide on either the dry or the wet crushed ore, (2) by the use of solutions of the various sulphides and sulpho-compounds of sodium, (3) by the use of solutions of the various sulphides and sulpho-compounds of calcium, (4) by the use of sulphur vapor, (5) by the use of a sulphureted oil, (6) with colloidal sulphur."

The essence of an atomistic unified kinetic model of strained thin film growth and defect initiation is presented along with a comparison of its consequences obtained from computer simulations with experiments. Within the competing kinetics of a strain dependent activated incorporation of atoms and an asymmetry between upwards and downwards inter-layer migration, the model provides a consistent description of 2D versus 3D morphology evolution accompanied by the appearance of surface vacancies and steps at no energy cost. The correlated migration of these precursor defects offers an atomistic mechanism for the emergence of surface half-loops from the growth front (thus accounting for configurational and thermal entropy) governed by activation energies closer to their correlated motion under the evolving strain fields and thus substantially less than those calculated with respect to the perfect crystal as the reference state. The essential mechano-chemical nature of the problem is compared and contrasted with the historical literature of such phenomenon as precipitation hardening and sintering in metallic and ceramic composites.

Introduction In northern Ontario, refractory clay is found on four rivers of the James Bay watershed: the Abitibi, the Mattagami, the Missinaibi, and the Moose. The clay all belongs to the same geological formation ( the Mattagami of Lower Cretaceous age) , and occurs within a structural depression or 'basin', the boundaries of which have never been defined but which appears to cover at least 1,500 square miles of territory. The recently constructed James Bay extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway crosses the northeast end of the basin at the Onakawana lignite field, which by rail is 126 miles north of Cochrane, 605 miles north of Toronto, and 60 miles southwest of Moose Factory. Smoky Falls, the northern terminus of the railway owned by the Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company, Limited, is 7 miles south of one other point in the basin, i.e., the outcrops of refractory clay, sand, and kaolin at the foot of Long rapids on the Mattagami river. Smoky Falls is 50 miles north of Kapuskasing. In a very early report(l) , Dr. Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada, described '"light coloured marl in horizontal beds" from the Missinaibi river, and noted that the lignite also occurring in the river was probably :associated with the marls. This was undoubtedly the Cretaceous refractory day. Other early writers noted the occurrence of fire-clays, but it was not until Joseph Keele(2), of the Geological Survey, visited thee region in 1919 and studied the clays that their real significance was known.

"The Institute of Applied Geology, Manila, Philippines, is jointly sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippines Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund). It provides, in its fourth year of operation, an interesting example of international cooperation in mineral development. Objectives include: (1) the training of mining engineers in modern techniques of mineral exploration; (2) assisting government and industry in discovering new ore deposits; and (3) providing the basis for the establishment of an economically oriented graduate school of geology at the University, the first of its kind in the country. Training of engineers requires roughly one full year, which is divided between academic study and actual field practice. Lecture and laboratory instruction include courses at university level designed specifically to up-grade those aspects of the geological sciences that are required by mining engineers now qualifying as mineral exploration engineers-economic geology, applied geochemistry, geo-physical exploration, petrology and structural geology. The field training involves direct participation in actual mineral exploration projects arranged with the co-operation of the Bureau of Mines and private interests engaged in mineral development and production. The system works well in practice, and the Institute staff and trainees were responsible for outlining new evidence of economic mineralization. It is also apparent from the application of the exploration methods available to the project -geological mapping, air photo interpretation, magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, self potential and gravity surveying as well as geochemical prospecting -that, under the humid, tropical, mountainous conditions in which the practical program was conducted, air-supported geochemical prospecting with attendant reconnaissance geological mapping affords the most economical and effective approach to mineral exploration for at least some of the deposits characteristic of the region."

Based on the weld pool length and width calculations due to an empirical model (1) for submerged arc weld metal, an elegant quantitative definition of tandem submerged arc welding is established. On the basis of this theoretical consideration optimum welding parameters for joining 25 mm thick low carbon steel plate in two passes by tandem wire submerged arc welding have been experimentally found out. An assessment of the metallurgical quality of weld metal and the dependence of mechanical propenies on pool overlap has been made. Also the solution of Rosenthal (2) etc. for a moving point source of welding, which was used as a guide line in formulating the empirical model for the calculations of weld pool dimensions, is compared with the solution of empirical model for submerged arc weld pool dimensions.

"End of panel longwall face recovery is almost certainly the most involved recurring geotechnical problem faced by operators, with major loss potential should problems occur. The paper presents Australian experiences and updates the outcomes of an industry sponsored research project on the geotechnical issues associated with conventional longwall recoveries.A number of critical features of the geotechnical environment, support design and mining geometry have a pronounced impact on ground control during face recovery. A model of roof behaviour at the take-off point has been developed and validated. Key geotechnical issues include low roof competency, an adverse weighting environment, geological structure, horizontal stress concentrations at the gate ends and the capacity and. integrity of the shields. All of these are identifiable either at the support design stage or, at worst, prior to the start of powered support removal, which is the critical stage of the recovery process.Key aspects of the geometry and process are the ability to maintain powered support resistance during bolt-up and recovery, the direction of shield removal, the impact of chutes and the speed of the shield removal process.The author presents case studies that illustrate these issues and the associated ground behavior.INTRODUCTIONEnd of panel face recovery is almost certainly the most involved recurring geotechnical problem faced by operators, with major loss potential should problems occur. In 2006, Strata Engineering completed an Australian industry (ACARP) sponsored research project aimed at defining and minimising the geotechnical threats during longwall face recovery (Strata Engineering, 2006). The research project had the overall objective of developing guidelines for the specification of ground control strategies, so as to minimise the likely geotechnical threats relating to the safety, operational costs and production delays associated with the recovery of a longwall face."
