This investigation was a part of the Bureau of Mines program for the production of critical and essential materials needed for the war. The Boykin Committee for investigating the steel shortage aided in obtaining an appropriation to be expended by the Bureau of Mines in studying the utilization of North Dakota lignite in the manufacture of hydrogen that could be used in the production of sponge iron from the low-grade iron ores of Minnesota. This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the workability of the proposed shaft-furnace process and its possible use in connection with an experimental plant for the gasification of lignite operated by the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak.

Although the attention of those interested in diseases peculiar to mining as teen focused recently on one duct disease - silicosis - other respiratory diseases may cause more suffering and economic loss. The increased incidence of these diseases usually is attributed to exposure to abnormal air conditions underground, such as sudden changes from high to low temperatures, excessive dust, and noxious gases. The principal respiratory diseases to which the mine is subject axe bronchitis, influenza and pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, anthracosilicosis, and. silicosis. Although the mortality statistics in some of the tables included in this paper are old they have been corroborated by later, lees complete data Bronchitis Bronchitis is en inflammation of the bronchial tubes due, among other causes, to the inhalation of irritants such as dusts (organic and inorganic). Occupations that entail exposure to atmospheres polluted, by irritating gases carry with them the risk of bronchitis. According to Collie (1), it cannot be distinguished clinically from bronchitis occurring among the general population, and its association with tae inhalation of dust or gases usually is unrecognized.

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in longwall coal mines, a CFD model was developed along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible model of an underground longwall coal mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met for accurately representing the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure, and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring that prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

A commercial CFD-code was used to solve isothermal flow fields of gas and liquid in a Peirce-Smith converter. The model was validated with a 1/4 scale water model, and parametric study. Limits of the modeling technique used were recognized, but calculated results indicate that the present model predicts the general flow field with reasonable accuracy. The model was used to examine general flow conditions in an industrial scale PS-converter. Typical scaling factors of physical models were also evaluated with the aid of predicted bubble distribution, patterns of the flow fields and magnitude of flow velocities. The numerical simulations were found to open new viewpoints to the fluid dynamic related phenomena in the PS-process.

The objective of this paper is to describe the research followed in creating a generalized, readiness assessment tool for mining projects. We start by highlighting the need for the assessment tool and then progress towards explaining the methodology followed during the study. The selection and finalization of the list of elements, sections, and categories that make up the unweighted values are described, followed by a summary of the weighting process applied. The outcome of this process is a weighted readiness assessment tool for mining project studies. The main benefits of the tool are that it will guide decision-makers and project managers through the definition phases of the project and improve the likelihood of project success.

RECENTLY Horace Freeman1 obtained a patent on a successful method of conducting a roasting procedure described as to general features by Carl Schnabel2 almost forty years ago. Essentially, the Freeman process of roasting consists in introducing the finely powdered sulfide mineral, suspended in air or any other suitable gaseous medium, into the upper portion of a heated chamber. The stream of suspended particles is directed vertically downward. A counter-current stream of gas introduced at the bottom of the chamber flows upward. The mineral particles are oxidized as they fall through the heated atmosphere of the chamber. All air required for the oxidation may be admitted either at the top or the bottom of the chamber, or may be divided between the top and bottom inlets in any desired proportion. Heat may be recovered by passing the gases leaving the furnace through a waste-heat boiler or other form of interchanger. In speaking of the results obtained in roasting pyrite, Freeman says:3 Steam yield from the boiler exceeds 1 pound of steam per pound of pyrite con-sumed, which pays the cost of operation of the burner. The oxide produced is in the form of fused particles or hollow shells of magnetite, containing about 65 per cent of iron. It contains the gangue material ordinarily produced in flotation concentrate, of course, but it is being found that most of this can be eliminated by magnetic separa-tion, and that the sulfur content, as consistently produced, is below 0.2 percent. This material is especially interesting as a high-grade iron ore, free from phosphorus and low in sulfur. It may be sintered or briquetted. It is even more interesting as a raw material for sponge-iron production, to be directly smelted in electric furnaces without the usual cooling of the iron powder and magnetic separation between the reducing kiln and the electric furnace.

Adopting environmentally acceptable practices in New Zealand is a crucial requirement for mineral wealth development. Recent planned expansions in the coal industry have increasingly placed mining in the media spotlight. A lack of appropriate national environmental guidelines has resulted in inconsistent responses and assessments of current and prospective mine sites. Such inconsistencies have lead to delays in decisions on developing economic mineral deposits that may have only minor short-term impacts, and have also allowed unacceptable environmental management practices to continue elsewhere.   A research collaboration between CRL Energy, Landcare Research, University of Canterbury and University of Otago aims to provide regulator groups and the mining industry with a unified approach to the requirements of the Resource Management Act 1991, which is the legislation that predominantly drives the nationÆs environmental policies and guidelines. The tangible outcome of this research programme will be guidelines for an integrated decision-making framework based upon robust multidisciplinary science. The result of this unified process will facilitate the development of viable mineral deposits and prevent excessive environmental impacts.   The framework will be derived from a synthesis of four objectives. Objective 1 identifies potential water quality impact. This objective is based on a targeted geochemical study of the lithology and waterways of the West Coast and Southland. Objective 2 categorises the degree of impacts on the ecology of receiving aquatic ecosystems and determines the processes that drive aquatic ecosystem recovery. Objective 3 identifies best strategies to sufficiently manage impacted ecosystems, and to prevent future unacceptable impacts. Objective 4 combines the findings of Objectives 1 - 3 into a standard decision-making framework. The development of this framework development will include wide consultation with representatives of the mining industry and regulator groups. It is anticipated that this multidisciplinary approach will provide a robust and coherent, standardised system that will assist in achieving industry and environmental targets.

"The Copper Isasmelt process has been developed over the past 15 years by Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The first two commercial plants were commissioned in mid 1992.The results of four heat balances on the Mount Isa plant are presented. At a smelting rate of 98 t/hr of chalcopyrite concentrate plus 14 t/hr reverts, the total heat generated was -91MW. Approximately 39% of this energy came from coal, while 50% of the energy reported to the process waste gas. To a first approximation the furnace is near chemical equilibrium.The impurity distribution in the Mount Isa plant was presented. Approximately 91 % As, 85% Cd, 75% Bi, 68% Zn, 60% Sb and Tl, 45% Pb and 30% Te in concentrate was eliminated from the matte.The ""bubble"" frequency of the gas cavity below the foot of the lance was measured at -2. 1Hz. Side bands displaced by -l.lHz modulated the bubble frequency. This was consistent with radial gravity wave motion in the slag bath. The two processes, gas bubbling and wave motion appeared to be coupled together; the bubble frequency was twice the slop wave frequency. ABOUT a year and a half ago, at the San Francisco meeting of the American Chemical Society, in connection with the excursions to local smelting-works, I had occasion to show some lantern-slides illustrating the recent commercial development of electrical methods for precipitating the suspended matter from smelter-smoke, the underlying phenomena of which were clearly brought to the attention of the technical public by Sir Oliver Lodge as long ago as 1884. In the Journal of industrial and Engineering Chemistry, August, 1911, most of these views were reproduced, together with an account of the work from its beginning up to July, 1911. To-day I wish particularly to show you some of the further developments of the work since that time; but in order to make these clear they will be prefaced by a brief abstract of the article above referred to. The removal of suspended particles, front gases, by the aid of electric discharges is by no means a new idea. As early as 1824 we' find it suggested by Hohlfeld 1 as a means of suppressing ordinary smoke, and again a quarter of a, century later by Guitard.2 These suggestions, which do not seem to have stimulated any practical study of the question, were soon entirely forgotten, and only brought to light again by Sir Oliver Lodge,3 many years after he himself had independently rediscovered the same phenomena and brought them to public attention 4 in a lecture before the Liverpool Section of the So-

This paper explains how new digital solutions improve reverse circulation drilling operations. Upgrading field-proven reverse circulation drilling (RCD) rigs with new digital technologies enables semiautomated drilling, with upgrade options for fully automated & remote drilling. Key elements of the improvements are electrically controlled valve systems, process instrumentations, a state of the art machine controller and drilling operation via a touch control panel. Automation of core processes, such as adding drill pipes, reduces set-up times, increases machine uptime for drilling and as a result efficiency. While drilling, sensors provide continuous feedback, which is used to automatically adjust e.g. the weight on bit to the optimum; resulting in an increased rate of penetration and less wear and tear. While in the past hydraulic power packs (HPU) have typically been operated at a constant high-performance level with related high fuel consumption, a new interface between the machine controller and the power unit regulates the HPU performance exactly according to the actual drilling operation needs. This leads to significant fuel consumption reduction. The safety benefits of the digital improvements are the ability to remotely operate the rig in challenging site conditions via a mobile operator panel.

O ambiente de Tecnologia de Automação compartilha características semelhantes, já que também fornece serviços para seus clientes. Entretanto, serviços de automação possuem particularidades derivadas, em grande parte, do fato de que são mais críticos para a atividade fim da empresa, já que visam manter a operação. Implantar uma Central de Serviços em ambiente de Tecnologia de Automação de uma empresa já existente demanda uma série de modificações em termos de Tecnologias, Processos e Pessoas para trazer os retornos desejados em termos de gerenciamento, organização da rotina e disponibilidade dos ativos. Este trabalho apresenta alternativas para atuar sobre os três componentes supracitados durante a implantação de uma Central de Serviços, com foco em sua operação através de uma Gestão Compartilhada (Cosourcing). Experiências adquiridas em projetos de especificação e operação de Central de Serviços também são apresentadas para embasar a estruturação da gestão da informação em ambiente de Tecnologia da Automação de indústrias de Metais e Mineração.

The chief purpose of this paper is to indicate the laws governing the fuel-economy of the cupola, to examine the feasibility of some of the proposals for increasing its fuel-economy, and to show that the conditions limiting fuel-economy here are altogether different from those prevailing in the blast-furnace. The two methods available for studying the thermal efficiency of the cupola and determining the factors limiting fuel-economy are: 1, by the determination of the total heat-balance; and 2, by the application of the theory of critical temperatures. The case selected as an example represents a cupola operating under fairly efficient conditions. The data are as follows : Cupola, GO in. in diameter, 15 ft. high to the charging-door, with a 9-in. lining. Bed-charge, 2,000 lb. of coke and 4,000 lb. of iron. Subsequent charges, 400 lb. of coke and 4,000 Ib. of iron. Total number of charges, 20. There was 800 lb. of coke recovered from the drop, hence the total coke burned is 8,800 lb., or 0.11 lb. of coke per Ib. of iron. Coke contains 90 per cent. of fixed carbon and 2 per cent. of moisture. 300 1b. of kindling-wood is used in lighting. 80 lb. of limestone (95 per cent. of CaCO,) is used per charge, or 0.02 lb. per Ib. of iron. Melting-loss, 4 per cent.; distributed thus : Fe, 3.5; Si, 0.25; Mn, 0.25 per cent. Average analysis of top-gases : CO2, 15.1; CO, 10.0 per cent. Average temperature of top-gases, 1,600" F. Temperature of air and stock charged, 60" F. Dew-point of air, 50 F. The items entering into the total heat-balance and their calculation are as follows: 1. White Pine Copper Company built and operated, from August, 1962 through May, 1963, a pilot plant to recover copper using a cyanide percolation leach of the sand fraction (+400 mesh) of the mill tailings (1, 2, 3). The pilot plant runs were metallurgically successful and preliminary engineering studies for a full scale operation were completed under contract by an outside engineering firm. Unfortunately, the net return projected at that time did not justify the proposed capital' investment. In the summer of 1973 the project was revived. The rise in selling price of copper over the previous ten years, compared to the projected operating cost of the leach plant, increased the calculated net return on investment with the most recent figures showing a 30% DCF. Basically, the reason for this favorable shift in profitability was that the cost for many of the reagents did not go up as fast in the previous ten years as did the selling price of copper. Using the Chemical Marketing Reporter costs, NaCN sold for 18.3¢/lb in 1963 and 20.75¢/lb in August, 1973. During this same period H2S04 went from $23.50 per ton to $35.90 per ton. In comparison, producer's prices for electrolytic copper were 31¢/lb in 1963 and 619 in 1973. Thus the price of copper went up 97% while the two reagents only increased 13% and 53%, respectively. The capital investment also escalated but, again, not to the same extent as the selling price of copper. These price differences no longer are valid' but they did provide justification for reexamining the project.

The purpose of this paper is to look at the costs of tailings disposal, and in particular the comparative costs of different disposal methods in different situations. Costs are often the hidden design parameter. We know that they are important but sometimes feel that it is not very respectable to talk about them in public. It is better from a public relations point of view for it to appear that the decision-making process is driven by environmental factors or best practice rather than looking for the cheapest option. But this presumes that the two are mutually exclusive and this need not be so. These issues are discussed later in the paper. It is also commonplace for the scale of the mining operation to change with time, typically involving increased throughput rates and total tonnage. New ideas in tailings disposal make their appearance. The regulatory attitude can change. Having made a decision about the disposal method at the time of original feasibility study and design it is easy to suppose that the mine is æstuck with itÆ. But that also need not necessarily be so. Careful costing of options may reveal that a switch in method could be cheaper in the long run. The designer will often tend to think in terms of initial earthworks and site development costs. Aspects of power consumption, labour, and periodic campaigns to move tailings pipelines and carry out embankment raises are either overlooked or not given the same emphasis. This can distort the evaluation process. It is productive to think in terms of dollars or cents per tonne as a basis of comparison, not just the total sums. Tailings disposal can cost from as little as 10 - 20 ó/t to over $1.00/t which is a big range. There may be good and unavoidable reasons for the high figure but there would need to be to justify being so far over the industry average. At the same time, mining and processing costs, at least for gold, are around $15 - 20/t. Viewed from this perspective tailings disposal will always be a relatively small component of the annual budget.

In the field of pyrometallurgy, the equilibrium evaluation has recently become easy by use of thermodynamic software, but it is strongly desired to estimate the amounts of non-equilibrium minor components to simulate practical processes. However, simple physico-chemical technique can not be applied to evaluate practical non-equilibrium components for many reasons. As an engineering solution for postulated equilibrium system, the activity coefficient is modified and introduced as the simulation parameter referred to as the "adjustment coefficient." This modified thermodynamic calculations were adopted to various sulfide roasting processes where many solid phases are participating and the system is not necessarily in equilibrium. Successful simulation was realized by assigning suitable adjustment coefficients for minor components which form a pseudo solid solution in the calcine. Some examples from sulfation roasting and dearsenizing roasting were discussed. In the smelting system, the loss of copper in slag is caused by equilibrium and non- equilibrium reasons, that is, chemical dissolution and entrainment of copper in slag. The total copper content of slag was simulated by use of the adjustment coefficient for entrained copper.

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

Longwall mining is the term used for the underground extraction of a wide and deep panel of coal. Such a panel may be blocked out by one or more entries on either side ("head" and "tail") of a longwall face. If all the entries are pre-driven, the panel extraction is termed longwall retreat mining. With one exception, all the longwall faces in the United States are of this type. (1) prior to the general decline in the rates of production with Continuous Miners, the development of the multiple entries generally kept ahead of the longwall extraction rate. This is no longer the case: longwall extraction rates far exceed the rate of development. In addition to this problem, in newly established mines, the development of a haulage and bleeder system based on multiple entries results in a lead-time of three years or more before longwall mining can be applied. This is one reason why earlier projections and much of the optimism attached to longwall mining as a principal "savior" in the energy crisis should be viewed with some caution.

Spring stiffness of soil and rock at different depth is often required for a pile structural model. If the pile is rested in multiple layers of soil, then it is rather more complex to simulate the soil in a structural model. The spring stiffness will vary based on density of soil strata over the depth. When a pile is socketed in weathered rock followed by a soil layer, a sudden change in subgrade modulus can influence the pile deflection drastically. Determination of soil spring and simulation of the pile in this condition required correct interpretation of subgrade modulus. The conventional approach of pile spring calculation underestimates the spring stiffness by ignoring underlaying stiffer layers. A finite difference method (FDM) of analysis can reasonably estimate the p-y of soil / rock based on subgrade modulus of each layer. However, the transition between the layers can be better simulated as per the deflection pattern of the pile. The lateral deflection of the pile is mainly dependent on the stiffness of soil layer surrounded by the pile. Generally, the lateral influence of a pile varies from 4D to 6D depending on the soil type. Therefore, soil spring stiffness around the pile would require special attention of a Geotechnical engineer to avoid uncertainty in the prediction of pile behaviour. In this paper, emphasis has been given to develop an approach for pile spring stiffness design. A standard software program LPile has been used to develop p-y curves of soil and rock layers at different depths and then converted to soil/ rock springs over the depth. Modulus of Subgrade Reaction as given in IS 2911 (Part2) was also used to correlate the spring value for different type of soil. Obtained analytical results were compared with full scale field trial for lateral deflection of pile. A good agreement between these two approaches has been established. The effect of soil structure interaction in the structural model shall be simulated by assigning an equivalent vertical and horizontal soil spring, which is developed by Winkler’s soil spring approach. A simplified design principle for calculating the pile spring is discussed in this paper. This approach has been extensively used in Mumbai metro elevated line pile design.

Bauxite was discovered in the Springvale district in 1916. About 16, 000 tons was mined in the period 1916 to 1922, but no bauxite mining has been done since that time. The Bureau of Mines explored for bauxite in the district from September 5 to November 18, 1943. During the life of the project, the Bureau of Mines obtained mineral exploration agreements covering a total of 11,330 acres from 50 property owners. A total of 388 holes were drilled on five of these properties and 164 samples were taken and analyzed. The Springvale bauxite district includes an area of about 30 square miles in the northwestern part of Randolph County, Ga. The village of Springvale is in the west central part of the district, and Cuthbert is 8 miles southeast of it (fig. 1).

During the past decade (1937 to 1947), including the war years of heavy demand for metals, the United States realized about one-eighth of its antimony requirements from domestic production, chiefly in Alaska. In World War II, our foreign supply sources became endangered; and uncertainty in our Far Eastern supply made this nation focus on Alaska’s mineral resources with a Production Gear that centered in the Bureau of Mines experimental station at College (Alaska). The development work known as District or central deposits. The strategic mining districts included that of central Alaska was reorganized at Ketchikan Mining Districts. Mines were located here had produced considerable quantities since 1901; but methods for exploration had come from 1936 to spring 1942, some $4 million produced in gold alone. Statistics relating to available ores are those selected by type and exploitation periods with wide variety applied. During the summer of 1941, as part of an extensive Geological Survey program continuing through funds provided by U.S., geological surveys spent six weeks mapping an area approximately two square miles surrounding mines. The mines working both surface & underground work employed these men in mapping exercises.
