This paper presents a new process for producing industrial magnesium sulphate using waste water from titanium white plant and magnesium oxide from calcinations of magnesite ore as raw materials. With the laboratory experimental equipment, the waste liquid and magnesium dioxide react effectively at ambient temperature and under atmosphere pressure. Via the press filter, a clear liquid predominately containing magnesium sulphate is obtained. It is further evaporated and crystallized by cooling, separated by centrifuge and dried. Consequently a high quality of industrial magnesium sulphate is achieved as the final product. In the course of process, as the majority of valuable component (SO42-) is recovered in the final product, most of impurities from waste acid is being removed into the by- product. With the simple operational process, it is possible for titanium dioxide plant to resolve the environmental problem completely and benefit from the industrial magnesium sulphate product as well. The filter cakes containing valuable elements such as Mg, S, Fe, Mn, V, Ti are by-product proposed to be used for manufacture of agriculture fertilizer particularly for peanut planting.

A new simple correlation has been developed to evaluate the performance of classifiers. The new correlation has been tested on existing data from 150 different hydro-cyclone classification tests. It is shown that this model provides a meaningful improved method of mathematically describing the classification process.

The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. This supervisory bias detection method is developed in full details after which Monte Carlo simulations are done on a mineral processing plant example for showing how it can be successfully applied for detecting hidden biases.CITATION:Lachance, L, Leroux, D, Gariépy, S and Flament, F, 2014. Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

"7.1. Glossary of the Platinum-Group Minerals7.1.1. IntroductionA glossary of the platinum-group minerals (POM) serves as a useful introduction to a chapter on their mineralogy. Earlier glossaries (Cabri, 1972, 1976) were prepared for different purposes and composed in a different manner. As for most mineralogical textbooks, from Dana's System of Mineralogy, 3rd Edition (1850) , to Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species (1980), this glossary is primarily a chemical classification, arranged here in two tables. Table 7.1 groups the mineralforming compounds of the six platinum-group elements (POE) according to their essential anion(s) or according to the nonPOE element in intermetallic compounds. Table 7.2 is a similar listing for the native metals and alloys of the POE. Both tables include unidentified POM considered to be bona fide new minerals requiring additional study for complete characterization and recognition (see Chapter 9*). Some information on the chemistry of the POM is given in the sections on X-ray data (7 .2) and ore microscopy (7 .3). Because the overwhelming majority of POM have been characterized by the electron microprobe, a more detailed account of representative analyses is given in Chapter 8**. The total POM listed in Tables 7.1 and 7.2 is about 100, after deleting some which would not qualify as discrete species if found today, but which are still recognized on historical grounds; e.g. iridosmine, osmiridium, platiniridium. Tables 7.1 and 7.2 also include 28 unnamed POM; included because they are considered to be probably new species (Cabri 1981 b). The referral scheme for unnamed minerals is the same as in Chapter 9. There are considerably more palladium minerals known than other POM; the proportion of total species (listed in Tables 7.1 and 7 .2) for the POE is: Pd 48%, Pt 21 o/o , Ru and Ir 9% each, Rh 8% and Os 5%. These proportions are in marked contrast to the estimated cosmic abundance, as compiled for average type C1 chondrite by Naldrett and Duke (1980): Pt 29%, Ru 20%, Pd, Ir and Os 15% each, and Rh 6%."

Electrochemical activation behavior of an AB2-Laves-phase type hydrogen storage alloy, Zr0,9Ti0.lNi1.lCo0.1Mn0.6V0.2 was studied to make clear activation process of pellet-type metal hydride electrodes. An alkaline treatment of the electrodes with heated alkaline solution gave alloy surface enriched with nickel, and the treated electrode was more easily activated. The treated electrode desorbed more hydrogen during the first charge-discharge cycle, and was activated without induction period. A cross sectional view of the activated electrode showed finer pulverization of alloy particles than the annealed alloy, and impedance spectroscopy indicated larger surface area of the electrode using the as-cast alloy. Since the as-cast alloy contains inhomogeneities, multi-phase microstructure and stress in the particle, the finer pulverization of alloy particles with hydrogenation are considered to increase surface area in an earlier cycle in the case of the as-cast alloy, which leads larger reaction area and faster activation of the as-cast alloy electrode.

Softening heat treatment of CHQ alloy steel (Cr-Mo Steel) is a bottleneck process that requires 90% or more of the entire manufacturing process. In order to reduce the property deviation between edge and center and remove the low-temperature structure problems, CHQ products is heat treated by customers. This technology comes from the idea to solve the problem by applying the concept of “In-line isothermal transformation through initial quenching + heat source addition. Consider the stability of field operations, durability from high ambient temperature and fall of scale, Instantaneous heating and cooling control was required for the conversion of slow cooling and rapid cooling products. An electric heating system was applied to the underside of Stelmor air-cooling nozzle. Using the Scan Pyrometer, the feedback control was performed and fine temperature control was performed through the thermocouple by zone. Through the this technology, it is possible to develop and expand products that can be shortened or omitted by the heat treatment process of customers.

"This paper presents a quarry optimization plan using a block model and an in-house development quarry scheduling and optimization software (QSO Expert) to help improve quarry operations at Crystal River. The Crystal River Quarry is an underwater quarrying operation that barges limestone via the Gulf of Mexico, as the main source of raw material to a cement plant in Theodore, Alabama. To improve the quarry operation, an evaluation was completed to optimize the quarry planning and extraction procedures of the quarry. In order to achieve this, additional exploration drilling campaign was implemented, a new block model was re-calculated and the latest version of QSO Expert software was used. The primary economic impact is a higher recovery of limestone reserves; sustainability of resources, corresponding longer quarry life. Secondarily as the limestone is mined underwater and stockpiled above water, drainage reduces moisture content achieving direct cost reduction on limestone shipping. In addition, a considerable reduction in operational cost was achieved due to a significant decrease in consumption of electrical energy, reduced dragline maintenance costs and reduced dragline movements within the operation. INTRODUCTION Holcim is a Swiss-based global building materials and aggregates company. Founded in 1912, the company expanded into France and then throughout Europe and Middle East during the 1920s. In 1922, Holderbank, as the company was then known, expanded beyond the Swiss borders into France. By the end of the decade Holderbank held stakes in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Egypt (Holcim History 1912-2012) Positions in Lebanon and South Africa soon followed.. Holder bank later expanded in North America in the 1950’s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Holderbank continued its expansion in Latin America, Asia and Spain for the first time. The company expanded into Eastern Europe and experienced a boom in Spanish construction preceding the 1992 Summer Olympics. By 1986, Holderbank was the world's largest cement manufacturer. In the 1990s, the company consolidated its European holdings as the American market drove growth. Expansion into Eastern Europe and Russia continued (Holcim History 1912-2012). In 2001, the company changed its name from ""Holderbank Financière Glaris"" to Holcim (short for Holderbank ciment) (Holcim History 1912-2012). Holcim expanded by purchasing Aggregate Industries entering into the United Kingdom for the first time. That year, the company also expanded into India by acquiring a stakes in The Associated Cement Companies (ACC) and Ambuja Cement Eastern. In 2008, Holcim became the largest shareholder of China's Huaxin Cement with a 40% stake. In 2009, they acquired Cemex Australia. In 2014, Holcim and Lafarge announced they had agreed to terms on a ""merger of equals"" valued at nearly $50 billion in 2015. The new company LafargeHolcim based in Switzerland has a manufacturing capacity of 427 metric million tons a year."

The Bi-Directional Static Load Test (BDSLT) is a test that determines the capacity of piles when loaded under bi-axial static compression. In recent years the BDSLT has seen an increase in demand due to its safety, speed, and affordability. This innovative foundation testing method has been universally used over the last 50 years, however respective codes and standards have only been published within the recent years. Detailed test procedures and methodology are expatiated in the ASTM D8169 M-18 [1], and the IRC 78 2014 Clause 709.2.5. [2] These standards provide the minimum requirements for the execution of the BDSLT. In this paper we did a comparative study of both standards envisaging to bring attention to the similarities and discrepancies found therein, with an aim to highlight the impacts and challenges that differing provisions of each standard could pose on the conduct of the BDSLT. Discrepancies found have been explained on the basis of geotechnical engineering theories and relevant field occurrences observed by superior engineers. Additionally, we emphasize on the relevance of experienced engineer’s judgement when utilizing the standards.

THE registration badges gave out, there were not enough programs, the Pioneer Hotel's rooms were insufficient, and some hundred applicants for banquet tickets had to be turned down at the Institute's Regional Meeting in Tucson, Nov. 1-5. Minor inconveniences these, however, occasioned by the fact that, optimistic as they are in Arizona, about half again as many partook of the week's activities as were expected. For this, the local program committee can be blamed-both the technical and social features were too attractive in quantity and quality. Seriously speaking, though, the Institute has probably never had a more successful Regional Meeting than this one. It being the first that has been held in Arizona in 22 years, no effort was spared to make it the distinctive gathering that it was.

Introduction Fracture mechanics is the study of the behavior of cracks and their modes of propagation. During cracking, energy is consumed in creating new surface area. The more energy a material absorbs, the higher is its fracture resistance. This fracture energy is provided either by work done externally, by the release of elastic strain energy within the cracked body, or by a combination of these two effects. Fracture resistance is measured in terms of either the stress intensity factor, K, or the energy release rate (also referred to as crack driving force), G. For linearly elastic materials, these two quantities are related by the following equation: [ ] where [u] is Poisson's ratio and E is the modulus of elasticity. Both K and G are direct functions of the applied force and the crack length. The process of rock cutting with full-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) involves the indentation of a rock surface by rolling disc tools. Excavation occurs as fractures, extending from the locus of chip indentation, propagate between concentric disc grooves and liberate rock chips from the intact rock face. Since disc cutting is achieved by a fracture process, it is logical to anticipate that differences in cuttability of a variety of rocks should be related to the variation of fracture material properties among the rocks. Such a relation has been demonstrated between the performance of full-face TBMs and the critical crack driving force for excavation in relatively high strength, brittle, low porosity, isotropic rock (Nelson et al., 1985). The objective of this paper is to report on the results of a continued investigation of the relationship between fracture material properties and the effectiveness of disc cutting. Additional reliable data on full-face TBM performance is difficult to obtain, so that the results of disc linear cutter tests performed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) (U.K.) are utilized in this study. Fracture Material Property Evaluation If a crack tip is subjected to a perfectly plain strain condition, many materials will behave in a brittle manner, and the material resistance to fracture is constant during crack growth. This resistance is referred to as the plain strain fracture toughness, believed to be a material property. The standard testing procedure for this parameter is given in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test designation E399. To ensure plain strain conditions, acceptable specimen geometries are specified. Unless these geometric specifications are adhered to, the measured fracture resistance is regarded as the apparent fracture toughness, and a subscript Q is used, as [ ]. The methodology adopted by ASTM E399 is within the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). This approach assumes that material resistance against cracking is developed instantaneously, without initial stable or subcritical crack extension. Prior to crack advancement in rock, however, much of the crack driving energy is absorbed in a localized volume in front of the crack tip, referred to as the plasticity or microcracking zone. This capability for energy absorption substantially increases material resistance, and a crack may be arrested unless an increased crack driving force is applied. The LEFM or plain strain assumptions would underestimate the actual fracture resistance of such a material. Such a conservative approximation may be desirable in the design of structures against fatigue or brittle failure. In mining or tunneling, however, an underestimation of crack resistance can lead to the selection of underrated excavation equipment and a decrease in production efficiency. The development of fracture resistance in rock is best described by the material resistance curve, or R-curve, which is a plot of fracture resistance as a function of crack extension. Typically, peak resistance is only reached after a finite amount of subcritical crack growth. The

A standard procedure for determining size-specific gravity distributions of fine coal (including the -400 mesh fractions) by sieving and centrifugal sink-float separation is described. The significance of using a centrifugal sink-float technique and the effect of the magnitude of the centrifugal force on the separation of fine coal are confirmed in the present study. The relative merits of cumulative versus incremental sink-float are discussed. The procedure is evaluated quantitatively using data obtained for the products of froth flotation of -100 mesh coal.

I NTRODUCTION The injection of energy in the form of heat into an oil-bearing formation as a means of increasing the recovery of oil has been the subject of much discussion and experimentation as far back as 1920. The ideas have ranged from the injection of steam to the direct use of electricity as a means of getting thermal energy into a formation. However, most laboratory and field studies have been confined to the process whereby a portion of the crude in the reservoir is burned to generate the necessary heat to increase the mobility of the oil by reducing its viscosity. A recent paper by W. L. Martin, et al.', described the results of a number of laboratory experiments in which the combustion process was studied in a sandpack. Studies such as this indicate that with the temperatures involved, the oil is partially coked in this process and it is this coke which provides the fuel for combustion. The combustion of this residual coke can be analyzed theoretically by applying simple stoich-iometric principles to the combustion process. It is the purpose of this paper to compare the results reported in these experiments with those obtained from theoretical considerations. The variables studied by Martin, et al, among others, include combustion front velocity, air flux, oxygen utilization, fuel concentration, ratio of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in combustion gases, and the hydrogen:carbon ratio of the residual fuel. All these variables come into consideration when the stoichiometry of the combustion process is studied. The experimental conditions and results are tabulated in Tables 3 and 4 of Ref. 1. For purposes of comparison with calculated results, it was necessary to change the units of a number of the variables. India is one of the fortunate countries that has substantial reserves of many raw materials for producing steel; however, for historical and economic reasons these resources have not been aggressively developed until recently. Production of steel on an industrial scale started in 1912, but annual output was below 1 million tons3 in 1938 and about 1,500,000 tons in 1951. Expansion of the steel industry became one of the objectives of India's economic planning after independence in 1947. The Planning Com¬mission's 1951 report emphasized the importance of steel production, but financial obstacles, emphasis on river valley projects, and priority for increased food production in the First 5-Year Plan (1951-56) did not permit large-scale expansion of steel capacity. The 1956 planned target for crude steel, only 1,650,000 tons, was actually exceeded by production of 1,737,900 tons. In the Second 5-Year Plan (1956-61), however, construction of steel plants received a high priority. Currently three new steel plants, each with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million tons of steel, are nearing completion in Rourkela, Dorgapur, and Bhilai. Simultaneously, the two privately owned steel plants and the small State-owned plant in Mysore have been enlarged and modernized. As a result, India's crude steel capacity will be about 6 million tons in 1961, almost evenly divided between Government-owned and privately owned plants. Actual production in 1960 totaled 3,254,000 tons compared with 2,434,000 tons in 1959. Assuming that the population will be 430 million and that capacity production will be achieved, the 1961 per capita steel output will be only 31 pounds compared with 200 pounds for Japan in 1959. Some Indian experts feel that development of steel-consuming industries merits greater emphasis in the Third 5-Year Plan (1961-66) than expanding existing steel-producing facilities. Nonetheless, the Third 5-Year Plan calls for a 10 million ton annual capacity by 1966 to be achieved by expanding the Government-owned plants in Bhilai, Durgapur, and Mysore, and by establishing a new integrated Government plant in Bokaro, in the State of Bihar.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

The coal-mining industry of the United States finds difficulty not only in making ends meet financially but also in operating with anything like reasonable safety. The record to date has not been particularly good as to either finance or safety, but at least in some phases or safety there are indications of better times to come. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1929, only 139 lives were lost in explosions in our mines as against 342 lost during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1928; this decrease in such fatalities is definitely a matter for satisfaction. During the fiscal year July 1, 1928, to June 30, 1929, the attention of the safety division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines was directed to 38 mine explosions in the United States. Two explosions were in non-coal mines, one in a semianthracite mine, two in anthracite mines, and 33 in bituminous mines. These were not all major explosions - that is, explosions in which five or more lives were lost; in some of the explosions no lives were lost, while in others fewer than five fatalities resulted. Table 1 gives data on the explosions, showing the number of mines using open or closed lights and the number of explosions with resulting deaths, by causes, for each State.

"Coprecipitation with ferrihydrite has been one of the major treatment method for As(V) removal from wastewater such as acid mine drainage. We already confirmed coprecipitation of As(V) with ferrihydrite consists of two kinds of mechanism; one is two dimensional As(V) uptake to the surface of ferrihydrite by surface complexation and another is three dimensional As(V) uptake into ferrihydrite by surface precipitation. We also already confirmed As(V) adsorption process by ferrihydrite could be quantitatively evaluated by original surface complexation model with parameter values reported by Dzombak and Morel. However, As(V) coprecipitation process couldn’t quantitatively be represented by only the original model. In this study, construction and calculation using surface precipitation model were attempted for As(V) coprecipitation treatment with ferrihydrite. In the surface precipitation model, precipitation was described by the formation of solid compound between ferrihydrite and ferric arsenate. Activity of these precipitates was determined by surface precipitation ratio of FeAsO4(s) obtained experimentally from XANES analyses. Solubility products of surface precipitation of FeAsO4(s) (Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.)) were determined by fitting to sorption densities and surface precipitation ratio in each condition. The values of Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.) were determined 10-7.7 at pH5 and 10-10.2 at pH7, respectively. Based on the obtained Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.) value, As(V) removal and isotherm were calculated for As(V) co-precipitation treatment using surface precipitation model. Good agreement between experimental and calculated values was observed. These results were suggested that the quantitative prediction of As(V) co-precipitation treatment was possible if Ksp_FeAsO4(suf.) value was estimated experimentally."

Provide coal mine shafts/slopes with an optimum coal mine shaft fire and smoke protection system composed of reasonably-priced, reliable hardware. Approach Accident and injury data indicate that a relatively low percentage (5%) of underground coal mine fires occur in shafts or slopes. Nevertheless, shaft or slope fires are extremely serious because they block critical escape routes for miners. That also can happen when combustion products resulting from fires in other mine areas contaminate shahs and slopes. Seeking the optimum configuration for a shaft/slope fire and smoke protection systems, the Bureau of Mines gathered data on the performance of existing fire detection devices and signal telemetry systems In several mines, and analyzed the generic protection needs of the U.S. underground coal mining industry. The optimum system developed by the Bureau provided an adequate number of detectors, a wide area of coverage, and an extensive data acquisition, analysis, display, and storage capability. This system. recommended for fabrication and in-mine testing, consisted of a microcomputer-controlled master panel located in the test mine's slope hoist room, and four remote units. Two of the remote units were placed on the surface atop upcast ventilation shafts, a third was situated underground near the slope bottom, and a fourth was installed at the slope top in intake air.

Mineral froth pumping utilising centrifugal slurry pumps is a major engineering challenge for the end users and pump manufacturers due to the undesirable outcome of unstable pump performance. Most of these challenges occur due to incorrect pump selection and suction tank design. The traditional approach is to oversize the pump for pumping mineral froth. New horizontal slurry froth pump designs offer opportunities to improve the mineral froth with challenging (high) Froth Volume Factor while maintaining high efficiency, long wear life and stable pumping performance. This paper examines the flotation process in detail and how froth pumps are designed to handle this arduous process.
