"Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

THE AUTHORS welcome this timely opportunity to comment o n a paper by MacLean and Merner (" Room-and- Pillar Mining at the Prince Mine of the Cape Breton Development Corporation " , ClM Bulletin , June 1978, pp. 59-62) concerning the rock falls and their relation to "a change in the strata". First, however, it is proper to express our gratitude to the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and in particular to A. R. MacLean, for making it possible for us at the College of Cape Breton to start two new collections. The first of these is a fossil plant reference collection from the Sydney Coalfield, Cape Breton (Upper Carboniferous period) , and the second is a documentation of the role o f pyrite in the formation of hydrated sulphates (samples from No. 26 Colliery, 1-B Mine, and the Prince Mine at Point Aconi). Conditions of sedimentation in the deltaic-type basin of the Upper Carboniferous time in the Point Aconi area were such that on the (coal) swamp, now represented by the Stubbart (or Hub) seam , (a) clays of varying thickness and extent were deposited , (b) biogenetic sulphur was introduced and (c) flora were buried. These are essentially the culprit s that make rock falls possible and at the same time predictable over large areas (in the present mine). The clays lithified to become shale, and biogenetic sulphur combined with iron to become pyrite (marcasite?), which exists as nodules and in fine-grained layers.

A depth-sensing micro-indentation technique is developed for evaluating mechanical properties of materials at elevated temperatures (to 1200°C). System description and design considerations of the test apparatus are described. Based on Hertzian spherical indentation approach, the micro-indentation test apparatus is capable of determining Young?s modulus and creep strength of test materials with flat, tubular, or curved architectures from room to 1200°C under either air or controlled gaseous environments. Calibration tests were conducted on a H13 Tool Steel coupon from 22°C to 500°C and single crystal Haynes 230 alloy at 1000°C with excellent agreement to the literature values. Indentation creep tests of Haynes 230 alloy were carried out at 1200°C with preliminary results showing good correlation to creep exponents. Further system refinements will be investigated, and additional testing will be conducted.

"A new near net shape casting process, OHNO Continuous Casting (OCC), has been recently developed. In this process, molten metal is fed into a heated mold maintained at a temperature above the solidification temperature of the metal being cast. Solidification begins from the central core of the casting rather than the wall of the mold. With the heated mold, the formation of crystals on the mold wall is prevented and solidification occurs out of contact with the mold surface. This produces near net shaped products with smooth, mirror-like surfaces and unidirectional grain structures free from cavities, porosity and segregation. Any crystals formed at the beginning of solidification decrease in number as solidification progresses and eventually a single crystal product is obtained. This process is applicable to any metal alloys, converting them into new materials with superior properties and quality.IntroductionAs a result of growing technical demands for more advanced and diversified materials, the OHNO Continuous Casting (OCC) technology has found many new applications in industry. Considerable interest in the process has been shown in Japan and other countries because of its distinct ability to:produce a single crystal, (1)produce a remarkably clean cast surface without a witness mark,provide extremely good ductility,and reduce casting defects and segregation.This paper provides an overview of the principle of the OCC process and describes the remarkable characteristics of the material produced by this method."

ARGENTINA is a country that has never been properly prospected. This is my settled conclusion after reporting on mines in this country ever since 1914, crossing all the mining provinces from Chubut, in the South, to the territory of Los Andes, in the North, chiefly on muleback. It is difficult and costly to get from one district to another. Apart from petroleum, some mineral discoveries have been made but they have been the result of casual rather than systematic work. In Neuquen, Mendoza, San Juan, Cordoba, La Rioja, Catamarca, and Los Andes attempts at mine development have resulted in failures, involving in each instance several million pesos.

Agnico Eagle Gold have partnered with Enaex Australia at their Fosterville gold mine to leverage a combination of drill and blast technologies to optimise underground development mining. The mine is the first site globally to collaboratively develop and trial Enaex SWIFT electronic development detonators, which utilise a novel approach to the user interface, simplifying implementation and enabling the benefits of electronic initiation without the complexity of a conventional system. This has been combined with the use of a Sandvik 422i smart jumbo, and the Enaex underground emulsion charging unit with the capability to tailor the delivery of explosives as required and report on a hole-by-hole basis. The combination of these technologies enables full engineering oversight of the development cycle, in turn enabling optimisation of this process in a historically conservative application. The methodology for leveraging these technologies is to bore a controlled and defined blast pattern through using a smart jumbo, load the blast holes utilising lace loading to deliver a desired quantity of ammonium nitrate emulsion per hole, with the ability to reduce chargeweight for perimeter control, and utilising Enaex SWIFT electronic detonators with flexible template type pre-defined delays to initiate the blast holes. Subsequent to firing and excavation the performance of the blast in fragmentation, advance efficiency, and overbreak and underbreak is measured and reviewed. This is then used to optimise the development cycle and apply to other parts of the mine.

At the Yanacocha gold mine, in the Andes of northern Perú, the first instrumental tests were carried out in October 2019 to detect the initiation sequence of a production blast by detecting the EMF signal produced by the detonation from each blast hole in the sequence. Several experimental tests were carried out to choose the correct antenna and find the best setup of the high-speed Data Acquisition device (DAD) to detect these electromagnetic waves. Finally, the first measurement was obtained. With the instrument recording at a rate of 1 million samples per second, the initiation sequence was detected with 99.5% accuracy. It was found that it corresponded, without a doubt, to the designed scheme. The main result is that these tests provide us with a method and instrumentation to verify if the planned initiation sequence is carried out correctly in the field. In this way we can find operational deviations and detect possible misfires. This method has proven to be accurate, fast and easy to implement, mainly requiring an EMF signal capture equipment that can record at very high speed, something that is increasingly easier to satisfy with the development of microcontrollers. On the other hand, the type of antennas used in this method are low cost and very commercial. These tests have improved our understanding of the nature of detonation and have marked a new milestone in the development of blasting instrumentation in Peru.

"A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electric field (E-field) sensing to send text based communications using two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. INTRODUCTION Wireless, Through-the-Earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point to point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. This ability allows TTE communication to function without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure, such as repeaters. As a result, such communication systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Wadley 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer 1973; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate through a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers 1928; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Yenchek et al. 2012)."

EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development. Canada produces close to 42 million tonnes of coal per annum of which some 38 million tonnes is produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia, produce 31 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5 m to over 8 m. This paper reviews the surface mining methods used to extract such seams. The difficulties associated with steep seam and multiple seam mining of friable coal resulting in lower coal recovery, high dilution and the problem of cleaning fine coal in the wash plant have been highlighted.

Adolph Greiner, Seraing, Belgium:—I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have corrected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent. was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix 11. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p. in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. The solvent extraction section of an old Uranium Plant in the Vaal River region produced a sub-stance called Crud (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) that formed within the aqueous/organic interface of the settler of the solvent extraction circuit. The crud was deposited together with gold tailings to the tailings dam many years ago. Previous research done on the crud confirmed that ex-posed crud leaches Mn and Ni at concentrations that are well above their acceptable risk limits as well as Zn that leaches at concentrations that are slightly lower than its acceptable risk limit. Soil washing and bioremediation technologies were employed to treat the contaminated soil. Various laboratory test work and the pilot scale studies were conducted in parallel with each other and the results of the laboratory studies were used to determine critical parameters. Four lixiviants, i.e. sulphuric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid and ethylene diamine acetic acid were tested at three concentration levels i.e. 0.001M, 0.0001M and 0.00001M, respectively. Column tests showed that the leaching of the heavy metals increases as the soil porosity increases. Silica sand was added to increase porosity of the contaminated soil. Highest Mn removal was achieved mainly by sulphuric and oxalic acid at 0.001M at all soil levels. EDTA was significantly efficient in the removal of Ni and Zn. The recovery of heavy metals, particularly Mn, decreased as the depth of sampling in-creased. Heterogeneous bacteria and filamentous organism plate counts were conducted to evaluate the growth of the bacteria and filamentous organisms in the soil. Results showed that more organism growth took place in the bioremediated soil with a fertilizer added to it. The leaching of metals from the soil that was bioremediated in the pilot study was generally higher than the extraction of the metals from the soil that was leached with no bioremediation carried out. The results from this study suggest that the leaching of heavy metals from the contaminated soil is to a large extent dependant on the pH of the leaching solution. By increasing the soil?s porosity and bioremediating the soil, higher extractions of metals were achieved.

In-pit tailings storage can provide many advantages when compared to typical above-ground tailings storage facilities (TSFs). As regulations become more restrictive and existing mines expand into new pits, the motivation and opportunities for in-pit tailings disposal is increasing.The Langer Heinrich uranium orebody follows a palaeo-river channel and is mined as an open pit operation. The mine pits intersect two main aquifer systems, one at the surface and one at the base of the orebody/pits. The tailings storage methodology is full in-pit disposal in multiple TSFs for the life-of-mine. Continuity of the initial hydrogeological conditions is incorporated in the design by the use of the pervious surround concept and the reinstatement of the lower aquifer (palaeochannel aquifer) at the base of the pit. Containment embankments are required to facilitate the staging of the TSFs development and are constructed using waste rock liberated during the mining of the pits. All of the TSFs are equipped with decant structures and an underdrainage system is included to improve water recovery, enhance consolidation and increase tailings density.This paper presents the design of a unique in-pit tailings storage solution for the Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia owned by Paladin Energy Ltd.CITATION:Hore, C and Luppnow, D, 2015. AN unusually interesting meeting devoted to the discussion of the ways and means of improving coal mining practice, through the larger use of machinery underground, was held in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building on March 11. The meeting was organized by the Materials Handling Division of the A. S. M. E. and held under the auspices of the Metropolitan Section of that Society and the National Coal Association. The New York Section of the A. I. M. E., which had been invited to participate, found itself unable to do so formally because of a conflicting date for its March meeting but informally did its part to aasure the success of the meeting. As a result of the discussion at and preceding the meeting, the National Coal Association, through Walter Barnum, chairman of its research committee, has asked the A. S. M. E. and A. I. M. E. to join the Association in a study of the present problems of the bituminous coal industry. Messrs. Harry L. Gandy, Calvin W. Rice and H. Foster Bain have been selected to act as a committee which shall develop plans for a joint program.

NEPHELINE SYENITE is a feldspathic rock resembling granite in texture and hardness but it is white in colour and contains appreciable quantities of the mineral nepheline, the result of a silica deficiency. It is relatively common, with known occurrences in Russia, Scandinavia, India, Canada, United States, and other parts of the world. However, the particular deposit being mined at Nephton, Ontario, by American Nepheline Limited is unique in its remarkable uniformity and low content of iron bearing minerals, both qualities essential in a ceramic raw material. The orebody is a pear-shaped mass over five miles in length, up to a mile in width, rising in three prominent ridges as much as 300 feet above the surrounding lakestudded terrain. American Nepheline holdings, consisting of 2,200 acres, comprise some 85 per cent of the total mass.

"Alanx ceramic/metal composites are proprietary products developed by Lanxide Corporation who joined with Alcan to form Alanx Products L.P. in 1988. Alanx ceramic/metal composites are composed of silicon carbide in a combined alumina and metallic aluminum matrix. In laboratory slurry wear tests conducted by Alanx ceramic/metal composites have shown to perform well against other wear resistant materials. At the Kidd Creek Concentrator Alanx CG896 ceramic/metal composite was tested in two pumping applications, the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps. In both instances the wear rates of the parts made of Alanx CG896 were far less than the gum rubber parts traditionally used. As of year to date September 1992 the unit cost to repair primary cyclone pump parts has dropped 58% from 1991 figures. For the filter feed pumps the unit cost to maintain the pumps has dropped by 33% as compared to 1990 figures. The total savings represented by implementation of Alanx wear parts, based on projected year end unit costs for 1992, as compared to 1991 costs for primary cyclone feed pumps and 1990 figures for filter feed pumps, is $166,753. INTRODUCTIONAt the Kidd Creek Concentrator the cost to maintain the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps was a constant concern. Rubber wear part consumption was quite high and the manpower required was considerable. For 1991 the total cost to maintain five primary cyclone pumps was $244,062. The cost to maintain the filter feed pumps in 1990 was $72,076. A wear material was needed that would increase the time between repairs and that would increase the reliability of these pumps between scheduled shut downs."

"The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are compounds which can be isolated from plants and which exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities. Perhaps the best known alkaloid of this group is tetrandrine (TT), a compound isolated from the root of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Stephania tetrandra. It has been tested for its effects on the cardiovascular system, tumors, and the lungs. For example, tetrandrine has been shown to act as a calcium entry blocker in cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles (King et a/., 1988) and has been used in China as a treatment for angina and hypertension. Its possible effects as a tumor-inhibitory substance have also been investigated (Kupchan and Atland, 1973). In addition, there are several lines of evidence to suggest that it is a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of silicosis. Yu et a/. (1983) have shown that TT inhibits the development of experimental silicosis in rats when it is administered orally after intratracheal instillation of quartz. Other studies have shown that the alkaloid inhibits the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of silicotic nodules in rats exposed to silica (Huang et al., 1981; Liu et al., 1983). In fact, tetrandrine has been used clinically in China as an antifibrotic agent and has been shown to improve both the appearance of chest radiographs and the measurements of diffusing capacity in patients with silicosis (Li et al., 1981).Since tetrandrine may have a potential use as a therapeutic agent for fibrotic lung diseases, its effects on various pulmonary cells and tissues should be studied. Alveolar type II cells are located in the alveolar regions of the lungs and are important because they are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant (Dobbs et al., 1982; King, 1984), regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury (Kauffman et al., 1974), and metabolism of foreign compounds (Bend et al., 1985). Furthermore, in silicosis, for which TT has been suggested as a treatment, there are increased amounts of pulmonary surfactant produced (Dethloff et al., 1986a,b) as a result of increased rates of surfactant synthesis by type II cells (Dethloff et a/., 1989; Miller et al., 1988). Because type II cells play a critical role in maintaining normal lung function and because type II cells are affected in silicosis, for which 'TT has been used as a treatment, we studied the effects of tetrandrine on energy metabolism in these cells in vitro. Energy metabolism was chosen because it is a basic cellular function which is neces-sary for other cellular processes to occur. Since type II cells depend on mitochondrial metabolism for energy production (Fisher et al., 1980), we examined the effects of tetrandrine on cellular and mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. Additional experiments were performed in an effort to determine if intracellular calcium levels may be involved in the TT-induced effects. A preliminary report of those results has appeared previously (Ma et al., 1991)."

Based on two in-situ measurements and mathematical analysis, the micro-climate in a large central underground pump and power station has been discussed in this paper. It is found from the research that the "semi- infinite" body model in the general heat transfer can closely represent the heat exchange process in the air flow-surrounding rock-adiabatic intermittent heat source complex in the station. Finally, computer simulations were made to calculate the micro-climate in a similar pump and power station where power machines operate intermittently. The simulation results are quite satisfactory. It can provide useful information for decision- making in the air conditioning of such stations.
