YOU will likely recall the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year of 1957, with its polar expeditions, the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts and the spectacular launchings of the first artificial earth satellites. Our know ledge of the exterior of the earth was greatly increased by this international, friendly, cooperative scientific investigation. The Inter-national Union of Geodesy and Geo-physics has now been joined by the new International Union of Geological Sciences in sponsoring a similar study of the earth's interior. The program will extend from January, 1962 until December. 1964, and is known as the International Upper Mantle Project. During the T.G.Y studies of the interior of the earth were relatively neglected, even though the same international •Cooperation in obtaining simultaneous world-wide observations, by similar instruments, is required to locate and study earth-quakes, for example, as it is to study the earth's upper atmosphere. The upper mantle is 1•emote from man, as it extends from a depth of about 10 km. to perhaps 1000 km., but its practical importance is great.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IT is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition ; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. During World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated a large number of ore deposits in the United States and Alaska in a search for domestic sources of strategic minerals. Deposits chosen for exploration included those expected to contain metals of importance in the successful prosecution of the war. This report describes exploration of a district of known antimony occurrence on Coyote or Antimony Creek near Antimony, Garfield County, Utah. A preliminary report by Paul T. Allsman, Chief of the Bureau's Salt Lake City branch made in August 1941, recommended further investigation, and proposed methods for performing the work. The project, begun in November 1941 and completed in January 1942, included trenching and sampling in four of the most promising parts of the area The Federal Geological Survey cooperated in the work by detailed mapping and assisted in the interpretation of geologic data.

"Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. He has brought to this work a wide knowledge of accountancy, supplemented by a background of direct contact with the slate industry, and his presence at the various conferences has been of great advantage in clearing up difficulties. The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

WHEN certain binary Fe-Ni alloys are worked cold and then stabilized by a stress-relief anneal, their Young's moduli are nearly invariant over a substantial temperature range determined by composition and work-anneal history.' In the present investigation addition of molybdenum to such alloys (besides increasing the yield strength) was found to diminish the sensitivity of the thermal coefficient of Young's modulus to composition changes. Such alloys are of interest for applications requiring 1 a metal with controlled, low temperature coefficient of Young's modulus and substantial magnetic permeability.' Young's modulus ordinarily decreases with rising temperature. In ferromagnetic alloys a change in modulus on heating due to loss of ferromagnetism modifies the .temperature dependence. Far below the Curie temperature ferromagnetism alters the modulus in two ways: a—Addition of the energy of magnetization, a function of interatomic distance, changes the relation between interatomic energy and distance.' This lowers the modulus in the Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Mo alloys of this investigation. b—An applied stress changes the ferromagnetic domain arrangement so that linear magnetostriction contributes to the strain and further lowers the modulUs.~ Since in the alloys of this investigation both effects lower the modulus, loss of ferromagnetism on heating changes the slope of the modulus-temperature curve in a positive direction. With increasing temperature the slope of the modulus-temperature curve, due to progressive loss of ferromagnetism, becomes less negative, goes through zero (the modulus is minimum), becomes positive, and resumes its normal negative value above the Curie temperature.' The increase in modulus and decrease in curvature in the modulus-temperature curve occurring on work hardening have been attributed to a reduction in effect (b).'. Vn the absence of ferromagnetism work hardening through introduction of residual strains would be expected to decrease the modulus.' Alloy Preparation—Test Methods Four series of alloys having nominal molybdenum contents of 5, 7, 9, and 10 pct and containing 47 to 58 pct Fe (the analyzed compositions are given in Table I) were melted in air and cast as bars weighing from 2 to 6 lb. The charge consisted of electrolytic nickel, Armco iron, molybdenum (99+ pct) or ferromolybdenum (62 pct Mo), manganese, and aluminum as a deoxidizer. The bars were swaged cold to the desired diameters with intermediate anneals. Alloys in this composition range are reported" to be face-centered cubic and ferromagnetic at room temperature. The Curie temperatures" decrease with molybdenum. For example, keeping the Ni/Fe ratio at unity and increasing the molybdenum from 0 to 17 pct decreases the Curie tempera- ture from approximately 500°C to room temperature. (The 17 pct Mo alloy requires quenching to retain a single phase.~) Young's modulus at a series of temperatures from —50" to 100°C was determined by a dynamic method previously described.', " In this method Young's modulus is calculated from the resonant frequency (in this case approximately 50,000 cycles per second) of a rod sample (approximately 2 in. long) vibrating longitudinally in the first mode. The densities of the samples at room temperature, Table I, were determined by the standard method of weighing in air and reweighing in redistilled bromobenzene. The linear coefficients of expansion, Table I, needed to calculate the sample length and density at the temperature of measurement, were obtained by observing the change in length (22" to 100°C) of an 8 in. gage distance with a two microscope cathetometer. The values of density and coefficient of expansion in the few samples checked are independent of treatment to the accuracy reported. This was assumed to be general for all the samples. The modulus values are accurate to &0.05x101' dynes per sq cm. However, values of thermal change in modulus are accurate to 20.005~ 10" dynes per sq cm. Young's Modulus Values at 25°C: The modulus values of O', 5, and 10 pct Mo alloys at 25 °C are plotted in Fig. 1 as functions of nickel. After working cold, the samples were either recrystallized at 950" to 1000°C or given a low temperature stabilizing anneal at 400° C. The occurrence of a secondary, dust-fuelled explosion following blasting of sulphide ores has been reported in mines in many countries, including canada, the USA, Australia and South Africa. However there has been little effort to document the events and develop effective control technology. Following a detailed investigation of an incident at the Geco Di vision of Noranda Minerals Inc. , the company held a conference of interested parties in October 1986 to review the state-of-the-art and to agree on action. '!his paper outlines the causes and effects of such explosions, the key conference points and conclusions, and subsequent information-exchange and teclmology-developrnent activities.

A research program to aid development of improved methods for increased production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is a vital part of the Bureau of Mines effort to effect true conservation of that mineral resource. This report presents results of an investigation to identify the clay minerals within some Appalachian petroleum-reservoir sands, the effect of clay content on the fluid-flow behavior of those sands, and the use of brines in water-flooding operations. Permeability measurements using kerosine, calcium chloride brine, simulated oilfield brine, potassium chloride brine, sodium chloride brine, and distilled water were made on reservoir-rock cores. Clay fractions were separated from sand grains of disaggregated portions of each core sample, and the clay minerals were identified by the differential thermal analysis method. Relations of the permeability to various fluids were developed.

Chromium solution in wustite depresses the oxygen activity in a nonideal manner and expands the lattice slightly. Gravimetric measurements of the equilibrium compositions of wustite containing 0.00 to 1.38 wt pct Cr define the oxygen potential (CO2-CO atm) and the limits of the phase field at 1000°C. These data extrapolate to a maximum solubility of 2 wt pct Cr. The lattice parameter data, room-temperature measurements of quenched samples, differ significantly from those in the literature. Both pure and chromium wus-tites contract at uniform and equal rates as the oxygen content (metal deficit) increases. The a. US metal deficit relationships are straight lines showing none of the curvature previously reported. At constant metal deficit, the a. expands by 0.002? on alloying with 0.4 to 0.5 wt pct Cr but is insensitive to further chromium additions: a small expansion rather than a marked contraction. These results require a modification of the accepted alloying mechanism. IN the high-temperature oxidation of Fe-Cr alloys in Ha-H,and CO2-CO atmospheres the vapor transfer of oxygen from the continuous wustite outer scale to the porous inner scale/alloy interface sustains the high oxidation rates.1"3 The driving force for this transport is the difference in the oxygen activity of the outer wustite and that at the inner scale/alloy interface. In pure CO2, as well as in CO2-CO atmospheres, carburization of the alloy accompanies this oxidation. Current efforts to evaluate the parameters controlling this carburization have shown that the process is not simple; i.e., the carbon concentration in the alloy initially increases rapidly, reaches a maximum, and then decreases slowly as the oxidation time is extended. This is the same pattern reported by McCoy for the more complex oxidation-carburization of stainless steels and an Fe-Cr alloy in CO2 at lower temperatures.4 These changes in the carburization process occur while the overall oxidation rate and the lattice parameters of the scale layers remain constant. If this invariance of the lattice parameter is assumed to indicate a constant scale composition and thus a constant oxygen potential, the carburization results are not easily explained. Electron microprobe traces across the thickness of these outer scales, however, have revealed distinct chromium gradients penetrating 10 to 50 µ from the inner surface where the chromium concentrations were estimated at a few tenths percent. The variation of the chromium cmcentration on the inner surface of the scale, and the resulting change of the oxygen activity, during the oxidation process is considered to be important in defining the carburization process. Thus, to gain an understanding of the complex oxidation-carburization proc- ess, it was necessary to measure the properties of wustite containing known amounts of chromium (chromium wustite). Although the general features of the Fe-Cr-0 equilibrium diagram between 900° and 1300°C have been fairly well established by Richards and white: Wood-house and White,6 Seybolt,7 and Katsura and Muan,8 there have been no detailed studies of the limits of the chromium wustite phase field or the properties of these alloyed wustites. The recent results of a limited study of chromium wustite by Levin and wagner9 indicate that more than 0.67 wt pct Cr is soluble in wustite above 850°C and that this alloying is accompanied by a substantial lattice contraction. This change in the lattice parameter was not evident in the X-ray diffraction patterns of wustite layers from the oxidation experiments;1,3 the lines were sharp even though a chromium gradient existed in the scale. The present paper describes gravimetric equilibrium experiments which delineate the boundaries of the chromium wustite single-phase field at 1000°C and define the changes in the oxygen activity and the lattice parameter of wustite as functions of chromium and oxygen contents. The lattice parameter data of chromium wustite obtained from these equilibrium and special quenching experiments differ considerably from those reported.9 Those for pure wustite show significant differences from the widely accepted data of Jette and Foote.10 Since the causes of these differences are not easily assignable, and since the literature contains many sets of data on wustite which if not in conflict are at best not in harmony, the experimental procedures are discussed in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL Oxide Preparation. The specimens used in these studies were porous pellets compacted from high-purity (Fe,Cr)2O3 or Fe2O3 powders. These powders were prepared from electrolytic chromium (99.8 pct purity) and electrolytic iron purified by consumable-electrode, vacuum arc-melting processing (299.9 pct purity).11 The oxides were produced by standard analytical procedures: solution of the metals in acids (HC1, then HNO3 added), coprecipitation of the hydroxides (NHaOH), and filtering and washing these precipitates. Initial dehydration of the coprecipitated hydroxides was done in a porcelain evaporating dish heated by a Meker-type burner, final dehydration by firing in a recrystallized alumina crucible at 1000" to 1050°C for 20 hr in an electrically heated furnace. Spectrographic analysis detected the following impurities: silicon, 0.01 pct or less; aluminum, 0.001 pct to trace; manganese and copper, 0.0001 pct to none. A modeling, simulation and optimization study of a complex industrial fluorspar beneficiation plant (Kadipani, Gujarat, India) with fourteen/ten flotation banks is carried out to find an optimum/near-optimum circuit for the given quality of feed ore. The phenomenological flotation model developed by Mehrotra and Kapur (1974) is used for circuit optimization. Two different optimization problems are formulated and solved. The first optimization problem involves a single objective function, which uses available plant data to estimate the feed-characterizing parameters, i.e., the flotation rate constants, by minimizing the weighted sum-of-square errors between the computed and plant values. The second optimization problem involves two objective functions to obtain several simplified circuits. The number of non-linking streams and the overall recovery of the concentrate, i.e., the acid-grade product, are maximized simultaneously in this problem. The single-objective variant (SGA-II-mJG) of the binary-coded elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm with the jumping gene adaptation, NSGA-II-mJG, is used for the first problem, while NAGA-II-mJG (Guria et al., 2005 a) is used for the second problem. Simplified circuits with a few split streams are proposed on the basis of the present optimization study, which enhance the recovery of the acid-grade product without affecting its quality, for a given total volume of the flotation cell-bank. Even though the optimal solutions have certain drawbacks, they suggest a meaningful direction in using an iterative fitting of parameters to such optimal circuits, followed by re-optimization. This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1954 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline. Data also are given for 30 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers I 1954 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 15 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

"Gold dissolution was investigated in ferric chloride media, promoted as one of the most promising alternatives for cyanide-free gold leaching. The characteristics of gold open circuit potential (OCP) and its relation to gold dissolution rate was investigated. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of gold dissolution in ferric chloride leaching was discussed. The effect of solution variables, [Fe3+] = 0.02–1.0 M, [Cl–] = 2–5 M, T = 25–95 °C and pH = 0–1.0, on OCP and dissolution rate were studied electrochemically using rotating disk electrode (RDE) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) method with ?cyc = 1000 RPM. The investigated gold OCPs in ferric chloride solutions were found to vary between 597 and 688 mV vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) and gold dissolution rates between 1.2·10–5–5.0·10–4 mol s–1 m–2. Increase in temperature (25–55 °C) and ferric concentration (0.02–1.0 M) changed OCP into more positive values, while increase in chloride concentration (2–5 M) decreased it. The logarithm of gold dissolution rate was shown to increase linearly with increasing OCP at the temperature range 25–95 °C, ferric concentration range 0.02–0.5 M and chloride concentration range 2–4 M. A notable increase in the gold dissolution reaction rate was evident at T > 55 °C. INTRODUCTION Currently cyanide leaching is the predominant method used in gold production from primary raw materials (Marsden and House, 2006). However, since the Baia Mare disaster in Romania in 2000, the use of cyanide has been the subject of international concern due to the toxic nature of the chemical posing a significant health threat if exposed to the ecological entities (Hilson and Monhenius, 2006; UNEP/OCHA, 2000). Therefore, several countries e.g., Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Turkey, many states of the USA and provinces of Argentina, have started to ban or limit cyanidation via legislation (Laitos, 2012). Thus, alternative solutions, such as thiourea, thiosulphate, oil-coal agglomerates as well as halides have been investigated in order to replace cyanide as lixiviant (Adams, 2016; Aromaa et al., 2014; Aylmore, 2005; Hilson and Monhemius, 2006; Lampinen et al., 2015). Ferric and cupric chloride leaching have been reported to have advantage over cyanidation being capable to dissolve refractory gold minerals, without pre-treatment such as pressure oxidation or roasting (Angelidis et al., 1993; Lundström et al., 2014; Marsden and House, 2006; van Meersbergen et al., 1993). According to Aylmore (2005), 4% of publications for alternative lixiviants to cyanide in gold leaching were within category oxidative chloride processes including aqua regia and acid ferric chloride leaching. Further, some patents have been granted for ferric chloride leaching of gold (Abe and Hosaka, 2010; Lundström et al., 2016)"

There is one quick way to substantially reduce the operating cost of a great many pining operations. It is to cut the demand charge on the use of electricity and gas. Demand charge is the utility company's charge for the maximum rate of energy usage which is in addition to the charge for the total amount of energy used. Energy demand is reduced by prohibiting simultaneous operation of devices, especially those that consume large amounts of energy, or by deferring the use of such equipment as air conditioners from one demand period to a subsequent period. To achieve that end, a control system can continuously measure the demand and turn off selected loads in accordance with established rules. Because of the complexity of most industrial plants, a computer is the best means of storing, measuring, calculating, and controlling the many variables associated with the many devices involved. A computer system for that use has been developed by the Westinghouse Computer and Instrumentation Division in Orlando, Florida. For most applications, this demand control system can be installed and operated by industrial plant engineering personnel with no special knowledge of computer technology. It can be used with both electrical and gas service. For clarity, let us examine electrical demand first.

Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. "SUMMARYThe coarse-grained granitic pegmatities of the United States have long been a source of many important industrial minerals, because of this, they have been studied intensively by geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists. These studies have amassed a rather astounding array of published and unpublished information.Correlation of geological studies between individual pegmatites, as well as between major districts, has brought forth some semblance of order to the knowledge of the structure and Mineralogical composition of those highly complex and irregular deposits, making it possible to classify certain prgmatitites and pegmatitec zones into several groups of associated minerals; based upon the presence or absence of the minor minerals of beryllium and lithium. This classification or grouping of minerals, with the methods that have been developed for recovering certain of these minerals, makes possible a systematic approach to the winning of many of the industrially important minerals from pegmatite rock by a single integrated process.As the coarse-grained granitic pegmatites are composed primarily of,feldspar, quartz, and muscovite, the methods developed for separating and recovering them, as well as those methods developed for separating and recovering such minor minerals as spodumene and lepidolite, are important contributions to the over-all problem of pegmatite treatment. Some of these methods have been demonstrated in the laboratory only, whereas others have progressed beyond the laboratory stage arid are being employed in commercial operations.Recent laboratory investigations at Rapid City, employing both these early developments and the mineral groupings, have demonstrated that a single integrated process can recover muscovite, feldspar; and. quartz from the rejects of hand-sorting a typical muscovite-feldspar-quartz material. Employing a newly developed procedure for the flotation of beryl, the investigations have also demonstrated the possibility of recovering the beryl, in addition to muscovite, feldspar, and quartz, by an integrated process from a typical berylliferous pegmatitic material in which all of these minerals are present."

Knowledge of the behaviour of flotation machines had developed and increased considerably over the last few years. Although much work remains to be done on the study of the fundamental processes that influence the collection of hydrophobic particles at an air-water interface, there is enough information to permit the building of realistic models of the gross flotation behaviour of various ores. These models serve as an ideal base for the development of simulation techniques for the steady-state behaviour of entire flotation plants that consist of a large number of individual flotation machines. Simulation techniques have a very real role to play in assisting with the design of new plants and in improving the operation of exisiting plants. Recently, highly efficient data-logging systems have been introduced on flotation plants. These systems are based on the on-line measurement of volumetric flowrate, pulp densities, and metal contents, and they generate enormous quantities of information regarding the operation of the plant. Unfortunately, this information is largely wasted at the present time because efficient data-reduction techniques, although available10 are not in common use. Simulation techniques play a central role in such data reduction because they form the essential link between the fundamental kinetic flotation processes on the one hand and the plant data on the other.

The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

Nobody has, as yet, made a perfect machine. Therefore, when a machine is operating and functioning as it is designed to do, there is always some vibration present. This is easily and simply measurable with present-day equipment and any increase in the amount of vibration will indicate a potential failure. When an increase is noted, vibration analysis can pinpoint the cause of the potential failure and remedial action can be taken before an unscheduled shutdown is necessary or a breakdown occurs.
