Ground conditions in central Glasgow generally comprise loose granular deposits overlying stiffer soils. CFA piling would normally be preferred for urban sites in these ground conditions, but flighting of the superficial deposits has on occasions resulted in building damage. Over the last five years rotary bored piling with vinyl polymer support fluid has proved to be an economic alternative to bentonite slurry. Two case histories in central Glasgow are described in this paper, one for piles founding in granular soils and one for piles founding into bedrock. A comparison is made between the methods required for disposal of the liquid waste from bentonite and vinyl polymer slurries.

In this report, the effects of anode-production variables, such as aggregate coke sizes, pitch binder content, and baking cycle, were investigated. A small alumina reduction cell proved effective in evaluating anodes prepared from commercial materials and from lignite coke and pitch. Compressive strength was found to be the physical property most significantly influenced, but it did not appear to affect anode consumption. Specific carbon consumption, that is, the ratio of carbon in the anodic gas to carbon theoretically oxidized at the anode, was used as an index of anode consumption. It was found that an anode made with lignite coke and commercial pitch was very low in consumption; however, anodes made completely from lignite but by a different fabrication method showed high consumption and anode deterioration. Microscopic examination of anodes after electrolysis showed evidence of higher consumption at low current densities, and was useful in judging overall anode quality. Based on the physical properties of the anodes and their consumption during electrolysis, lignite can be a suitable material for anodes, provided the proper fabrication conditions are used.

"The paper discusses the results of 3D finite element analyses to investigate the effect of face support pressure and soil permeability on face stability conditions in EPB tunnelling. Two main types of face behavior are identified: Undrained conditions ahead of the tunnel face, typically occurring in soils with permeability less than about k=5·10-7m/s, are shown to be favourable for face stability; analyses show that an applied face pressure comparable with the initial hydrostatic pore pressure is sufficient for adequate face stability, even for soils of relatively low strength. Drained or partially conditions, typically occurring in soils with permeability higher than about k=5·10-6m/s, show that face stability is strongly dependent on the horizontal effective stress of the muck in the excavation chamber; the presence of even a small effective stress in the muck is very beneficial for face stability conditions and can be a possible explanation of successful EPB tunnelling through relatively permeable soils. INTRODUCTION Face stability is probably the most important aspect in urban tunnelling. Usually, Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines are utilized, to ensure that a reasonable amount of face pressure is exerted on the advancing excavation face, reducing ground loss and preventing potential instability of the face core, thus controlling the amount of disturbance caused by tunnel excavation to surface structures. However, the ideal amount of face pressure depends on several factors (ground and groundwater conditions, tunnel size and depth, muck conditioning, etc.) which are difficult to include in analytical calculations. For many years, conventional empirical or analytical methods (e.g. Anagnostou & Kovari 1996) were the only available tools for quantifying face stability and selecting the required face pressure. In the last few years, however, numerical analyses have gained power over conventional methods, allowing more accurate designs and providing useful information about the anticipated ground deformations due to tunnelling. Numerical analyses have also been used in assessing safety against face instability using face extrusion (horizontal face displacement) calculations (e.g. Prountzopoulos 2012)."

"INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba's raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). "The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. Nomograms and charts are provided which permit rapid determination of the mold-casting interFace temperature and the speed of solidification when a semiinfinite ingot is cast into a semiinfinite mold. The physical properties of the mold, the frozen metal, and the liquid metal are not assumed to be equal, but they are assumed to be temperature independent. The cadmium-uranium system was studied by thermal, metallographic, X-7-ay and sampling techniques; special emphasis was placed on the establishment of the liquidus lines, The single inter metallic phase, identified as the compound UCd11 melts peritectically at 473°C to form a-umnium and melt containing 2.5 wt pct uranium. The cadmium-rich eutectic (0.07 wt pct uranium) freezes at 320.6°C. Solid solubilities in uraizium and cadmium appear to be negligible. Between 473°C and 600°C the liquidus line is retograde. NO publication relating to the cadmium-uranium phase diagram was found in the literature. The establishment of this diagram was of considerable interest to us because of a possible application of the system to the pyrometallurgical reprocessing of nuclear fuels. Analysis of liquid samples, metallographic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to establish the phase diagram from about 300° to 670°C. Particular emphasis was placed on the establishment of the liquidus lines. The same system was concurrently studied in this laboratory by the galvanic cell method.' Both studies benefited from a continual interchange of information. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Stick cadmium (99.95 pct Cd, American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 140 ppm lead as the major impurity. Reactor grade uranium (99.9 pct U, National Lead Co.) was most often used in the form of 20-meshspheres. This form was particularly suitable because it does not oxidize as readily as finer powder. The liquidus lines were determined by chemical analysis of filtered samples of the saturated melts. The liquid sampling technique is described elsewhere2 alumina crucibles (Morganite Triangle RR), tantalum stirring rods, tantalum thermocouple protecthecadmiumtion tubes, Vycor or Pyrex sampling tubes, and grades 60 or 80 porous graphite filters were used. Uranium dissolves in liquid cadmium rather slowly. In order to achieve saturation of the melts it was necessary to modify the procedure of Ref. 2 by the use of more vigorous stirring and longer holding periods (at least 3 hr) at each sampling temperature. The samples were analyzed for uranium by spectro-photometry (dibenzoyl methane method) or by polar- ography. The analyses are estimated to be accurate to 2 pct. Thermal analysis was performed on alloys contained in Morganite alumina crucibles in helium atmospheres. Standard techniques were employed; heating and cooling rates were about 1°C per min. For the determination of the peritectic temperature, Cd-10 pct U charges were first held for at least 50 hr at temperatures in the range 435° to 460°C to form substantial amounts of the intermediate phase. For the determination of the effect of cadmium on the a-p transformation temperature of uranium, charges of Cd-25 pct U (-140+100 mesh uranium spheres) were first held near the transformation temperature, with stirring, to promote solution of cadmium in the solid uranium. The holding times and temperatures for these treatments were 18 hr at 680°C for the cooling run and 28 hr at 630°C for the heating run. Alloy specimens for X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the intermediate phase were prepared in sealed, helium-filled Vycor or Pyrex tubes. Ingots from solubility runs and thermal analysis experiments also were examined metallographically. Crystals of the intermediate phase were recovered from certain cadmium-rich alloys by selective dissolution of the matrix in 20 pct ammonium nitrate solution at room temperature. Temperatures were measured with calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples to an estimated accuracy of 0.3°C. However, the depression of the freezing point of cadmium at the eutectic is estimated to be accurate to 0.05°C because a special calibration of the thermocouple was made in place in the equipment with pure cadmium just prior to the measurement. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The results of this study were used to construct the cadmium-uranium phase diagram shown in Fig. 1. This diagram is relatively simple; it is characterized by a single intermediate phase, 6 (UCd11), which decomposes peritectically, and which forms a eutectic system with cadmium. The solid solubilities in the terminal phases appear to be negligible. An unusual feature of the diagram is the retrograde slope of the liquidus line above the peritectic temperature. The Liquidus Lines. The liquidus lines above and below the peritectic temperature are based on three separate solubility experiments. The data are shown in Fig. 1 and are given in Table I. It is apparent from the figure that the solubility data obtained by the approach to saturation from higher temperatures fall on substantially the same lines as those obtained

There is general agreement among scientists that global surface temperatures have been increasing during the past decades. The increase in temperature is postulated to be the result of either an increase in greenhouse gases emission or climate variability (i.e., due to variations in sun or volcanic activity or El Nino and La Nina events) during past decades and may continue to increase. The effects of a predicted rise in the Earth?s surface temperature include an increase in average global evaporation and increase or decrease in precipitation (Bloomfield, 1992; Mann et al., 1991; Vinnikov et al., 1990; Gan 1995; Zhang et al., 2000a). The general circulation models (GCMs) project a global warming due to greenhouse effects of 1.5-4.5°C by the mid 2050s, with the most pronounced changes taking place in northern latitudes (Nicholls et al., 1996). However, similar predictions at a watershed scale or even a regional scale using GCMs are mot possible yet (Arnell et. al., 1996; Georgievskii et. al., 1996; Zhang et al., 2000a). Detection of historic trends, changes and variability in climatic variables is another indirect means of understanding potential future changes or variability at regional and local scales. The main objective of this paper is to review studies related to climatic change or variability and associated hydrologic changes at a regional scale and local scale, particularly those studies applicable to the Oil Sands Region (OSR) of Alberta. This paper identifies gaps in our current understanding of the hydrologic processes that may be affected by climate change; it discusses potential implications to developments in the OSR; and it explores mitigation opportunities including several that have already been implemented.

Data assembled by the Bureau of Mines , coupled with requests from coal companies , have emphasized the desirability of establishing standardized specifications for brattice cloth with particular respect to durability and fireproofing . Brattice cloth is a canvas or other material , often covered with some fireproofing composition , which is used extensively in coal mining for temporarily deflecting air into pillar workings and maintaining ventilation at the working faces . These specifications will be established , it is planned , through a cooperative program in which the U. S. Bureau of Standards will make a series of tests of various brattice cloths treated with respect to fire- resisting qualities and the U. S. Bureau of Mines will continue to assemble field data on the use of brattice cloth . Plans now are being made for this cooperative work. Without attempting to make a complete survey , the Bureau of Mines has made preliminary studies and investigations , and verious representative coal - mining companies have furnished detailed information . The information thus gained will be used as the basis for the cooperative investigation , but the Bureau of Mines would welcome additional information from mine operators on the character and weight of brattice cloth , conditions of use , durability , quantity employed and price . Such information should be sent to the Director , Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. The mine operator is interested in procuring at reasonable cost a brattice cloth with lasting fireproofing quality and of as great durability and strength as possible . There has been a lack of assembled data and knowledge regarding the subject , but the Bureau of Mines feels that this lack of knowledge may be overcome if the coal -mining companies will lend their hearty support to the cooperative investigation and submit information relative to the use of brattice cloth in their own properties . Information contained in this report is based on data obtained from coal operators in bituminous districts of Pennsylvania , Alabama , Utah , Indiana , Illinois , Colorado and Nova Scotia .

The Environment process, invented by Prof. H.K.Womer and developed at the University of Wollongong, simultaneously treats ferruginous and organic wastes via bath smelting. Conceived in the late 1980's, the patented process was originally developed using steelworks dust to settle solids from sewage, producing a composite material suitable for smelt reduction. Work began on the process in 1990 with the Australian patent having a priority date of February 1990. Early research focussed on settling of solids from sewage, while pyrometallurgical investigations examined smelting in small induction furnaces. By 1992 smelting trials had been undertaken in pneumatic and electric arc furnaces, the process being successfully demonstrated up to on 8 tonne scale. The success of this particular trial, and other smaller trials, resulted in construction of a 100kg DC arc furnace which was commissioned in 1993. By 1994 the main project focus was on development of the smelting technology. Over 3 years of trials on the DC arc furnace have identified and clarified many of the pyrometallurgical reactions. optimum operating parameters, as well as demonstrating the versatility of the process for treating a wide range of wastes. Currently the Illawarra Technology Corporation (lTC), the commercial arm of the University of Wollongong, is pursuing commercialisation of the process.

The effectiveness of induction fans in ventilating dead headings was studied in the laboratory and underground. The following fan attachments were evaluated: a. Aerodynamic nozzle b. Various lengths of vent tube c. Honeycomb airflow straightener. Various fan locations were also tested. The following conclusions were reached: a. A nozzle on a fan located against the drift wall gives the greatest jet penetration distance. b. Air straighteners are ineffective in increasing jet penetration. c. Induction fans are ineffective in removing contaminants from dead headings without sufficient main ventilation flow.

Review of the mining legislation in New Zealand has coincided with a number of radical changes. These include a redirection of economic management towards a more open and competitive economy; major reform of the state sector aimed at greater efficiency, transparency and accountability; a new environmental administration; and a fundamental review of policy for management of natural and physical resources. These changes provide an opportunity to develop a consistent and coherent approach in the minerals and related statutes that will achieve objectives of economic efficiency, equity, practicability and good environmental management.

It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. Geophysical prospecting was first recognized in Australia as an important aid to mining enterprises in 1927, when, on the suggestion of Sir Herbert Gepp, the "Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey" was organized. The function of this survey was to carry out investigations on the applicability and efficacy of the most important geophysical methods under Australian conditions. The survey was formed under the joint auspices of the British Empire Marketing Board and Australian Commonwealth Government, and the investigations were carried out in Australia under the leadership of Mr. A. Broughton Edge, B.Sc., A.R.S.M., F.G.S., M.Inst.M.M., during the years 1928 and 1929. A description of the work performed, the apparatus used, the principles of the methods, and the results and conclusions of the survey are included in a report published by the Cambridge University Press in 1931.In 1932 Sir Herbert Gepp became interested in some gold mines in Eastern Victoria, in the Cassilis and Bethanga districts, and realizing that the lodes in these areas would be favorabIe for a geophysical examination, he arranged for a series of tests to be carried out. THIS paper is a report on work undertaken to investigate the results and conclusions of Ravitz and Porter1,2 that galena freed of surface oxidation products and lead carbonate ("clean" galena) is waterrepellent, and that the action of xanthates in flotation is the action of a cleansing agent, enabling oxidized galena particles to expose a pure lead sulphide, water-repellent surface. The apparatus, in construction and use, was essentially that of Ravitz and Porter. The only significant modification introduced by the present authors was the substitution of a three-necked flask for the flotation cell as the "reaction vessel." Our procedure was to place 50 grams of freshly ground, minus 200-mesh galena in the reaction vessel, sweep out all molecular oxygen from the system with oxygen-free nitrogen, and proceed to wash the galena surface free of its oxidation products with repeated small portions of (I) ammonium acetate (500 c.c. of water, 200 grams of ammonium acetate) or (2) ammonium chloride, hydrochloric acid (2 liters containing 200 grams of ammonium chloride and 25 c.c. Of 1.18 sp. gr hydrochloric acid). The galena was next washed with many 100-c.c. portions of oxygen-free, distilled water. The galena was finally considered free of soluble salts when wash water that had been in contact with the mineral for at least 48 hr.* gave negative tests for: (x) lead ion with sulphide; (2) chloride with silver ion; (3) acetate with cuprous chloride, sodium chloride; and (4) ammonium ion with Nessler's reagent. Next 500 c.c. of potassium ethyl xanthate solution, free of dissolved oxygen, was run onto the "clean" galena particles. For this system there were determined: I. The wetting properties of the clean galena particles by shaking the reaction flask and noting the degree of mineral collection at the liquid-air interface. This was, of course, simply a qualitative test, but it proved adequate for our purpose. 2. The removal of xanthate ion from the potassium xanthate solution on being shaken with the "cleansed" mineral. Xanthate concentrations were determined by iodine titration according to the methods of Taylor and Knoll.3 3. The pH of the xanthate solution after having been shaken with the "cleansed" galena. The pH was determined colorimetrically.4 The results of five experiments of the type mentioned above are given in Table x.

"A method is presented for the evaluation of mineral processing by liberation and upgrading. The method bases on the plot of recovery of valuables versus the recovery of gangue (Fuerstenau upgrading curve). The locking curve of a feed material was plotted together with the upgrading curve in a Fuerstenau diagram. The assessment of liberation and upgrading is done by a comparison of surfaces formed by the curves and some characteristic lines of the diagram. This plot allows the calculation of two new quantitative measures for liberation and upgrading. Both parameters can be combined to a third parameter describing the quality of the whole technical setup for mineral processing by subtracting the upgrading parameter from the liberation parameter. The third parameter shows a positive value in cases of upgrading determined processes, a negative value in cases of liberation affected processes and about zero for processes affected equally by liberation and upgrading. Thus it is easily possible to distinguish between poor results in the mineral processing caused by insufficient liberation or poor results caused by insufficient upgrading. Preliminary results from two case studies, performed on two different ore types, are very promising illustrating the practical use of such an approach."

Fe3A1 intermetallics are potential inexpensive candidate for hot applications. In this project, torsion tests on hot-rolled and annealed Fe3A1 (Fe-15.5A1-5.8Cr-1.0Nb¬0.05C) were carried out over the ranges 750-950°C and 0.01~1s-1 . The experimental results showed that when peak stress op>90MPa (LogZ>16s-1 , Z: temperature-compensated strain rate), specimens cracked at randomly low strains. Optical microscopy exhibited original elongated grains and many grain boundary cracks associated with segregation. With op<40MPa (LogZ<16s-&apos;), specimens deformed with low random op but considerably high fracture strains; slowly propagating cracks may explain the reduced flow stress. Optical microscopy showed both elongated grains and equiaxed subgrains with some indications of geometric dynamic recrystallization (gDRX) and of static recrystallization (SRX). Compression tests gave higher stress with little effect of the preexisting cracks. The activation energy Quw of current material in satisfactory torsion and compression tests is about 10% higher than previously published. Fe3A1 has body-centered cubic structure in the experimental range, so it was compared with ferritic stainless steel 434C (Fe- 16.55Cr-0.96Mo-0.21Ni). Constitutive constants and restoration mechanism are compared between these materials. While Fe3A1 is hardly a light metal, it is considerably lighter than most steels. Furthermore, like the other body centered cubic metals (BCC) (a-Fe, ß-Ti, ß-Zr and ß-brass), it exhibits a high degree of dynamic recovery (DRV) like Al alloys, producing easier hot workability than that of austentic stainless steels.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are regarded as environmentally friendly light sources due to their high energy efficiency and lack of mercury content. LEDs are used for a variety of domestic and commercial lighting systems, where they are replacing incandescent and fluorescent lamps at a rapid rate. Incandescent lamps inefficiently consume energy because electricity is mostly converted to heat rather than light. This causes unnecessary environmental impacts and energy consumption associated with power generation and transmission from a life cycle perspective. Although fluorescent lamps are more energy-efficient than incandescent lamps, their disposal at end-of-life presents special challenges because of the presence of toxic mercury. Despite the seemingly apparent advantages of LED, very few studies have rigorously addressed potential environmental consequences of their disposal. Specifically, LEDs are designed with III-V semiconductors that presumably consist of toxic and rare materials, including arsenic, gallium, and indium. We hypothesize that, depending on their concentrations and leachability, these constituents may also contribute to render LEDs as hazardous waste at the end of their useful life.

While underground coal technology has progressed over time, regulations on coal dust have not kept up ? the most recent rules are more than 80 years old. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a joint survey recently on coal particle ranges as measured in US coal mine samples. In underground coal mines, dust explosions are prevented by the addition of enough rock dust (usually limestone) to make the total dust mixture inert. The rock dust acts as a heat sink for the dispersed dust mixture by reducing the temperature below the value needed to propagate an explosion. Federal regulations require 65% in combustible content in intake airways and 80% incombustible content in return airways, where the coal dust is assumed to be finer in size. The regulations also require an additional 1% incombustible for each 0.1% methane in the ventilating air in intakes and 0.4% additional incombustible for each 0.1% methane in returns.
