En ese sentido, el presente texto describe los factores que descubrieron el depósito, menciona las principales referencias respecto de su geología local y regional y enfatiza los aspectos institucionales y técnicos del descubrimiento, realizado por Minera Argentina Gold S.A. (MAGSA).

Ferrochromium produced by smelting chromite ores is an important alloying component in the steel industry. Ore, coke and fluxes are mixed and reacted in an arc furnace for a smelting process of ferrochromium. In ad-dition to this process, pre-reduction of chromite ore with carbon is an important industrial process. In all these processes, the mechanism and kinetics of reduction of chromite with carbon play an important role. In this study, the reduction of Turkish chromite ore with carbon was investigated. Chromite and carbon were ground to three different particle size groups. Chromite was mixed with carbon in stoichiometric and excess ratios. The samples were reduced under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1,200° and 1,350°C. The formed phases and alloy compositions of reduced chromite samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Experimental results showed that the degree of reduction and the reduction rate increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size. The highest degree of reduction, 61.4%, was obtained at 1,350°C. The reduction took place in three stages: Stage 1: transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and formation of metallic nuclei, Stage 2: formation of metallic crust around the particles and Stage 3: growth of the metallic crust and coalescence of the metallic phase.

HAVING had some experience in the use of gasoline-gas in a laboratory, I have been induced by frequent inquiry to present a few hints concerning it, which I hope may be of some value to those who are out of the reach of coal-gas, and who contemplate using this gas. While I will not delay to describe the method by which this gas is made, it may not be out of place to note that, unless frequent charges are put into the carburetter, the gas is variable in richness. This may be partially avoided, it is said, by repeatedly pumping from one cell in the carburetter to another. If a machine is in constant use for many months without re charging, the gas becomes rather poor for illuminating purposes ; but in this condition it may be burned in a Bunsen burner with advan tage. Could the gas be used always in this condition, no difficulty would be experienced, and it would be quite satisfactory for general laboratory purposes. Considerable annoyance, however, is experi enced whenever the machine is filled with gasoline. The Bunsen and other burners then produce a flame too smoky to be used with com fort, and, in fact, with most of them, a full supply of air; turned on at the base of the burner, will not suffice to completely burn off all the carbon. Finding it necessary to adopt some method by which I could get a flame free from unconsumed carbon, I adopted a plan which has in every way proved satisfactory. In addition to the pipe conveying the gas to the table, and ar ranged with a stopcock, there is brought to the table, within a fern inches of the gas-pipe, another pipe, conveying air direct from the pump. This pipe is also arranged with a stop-cock. The air- and gas-pipes are now connected with one pipe by a T joint; and to this last pipe is attached, by rubber tubing, the Bunsen or other burner. I have successfully used this simple system in connection with both small and large Bunsen burners, a burner with three tubes, arid a Fletcher burner; and recently I have added a new still to our equipment, and have been tising with it a Fletcher special high power burner No. 6, to which this system has been applied. A balanced system of internal stress is set up in any metallic structure by plastic deformation below the annealing temperature. The internaI stress induced by cold rolling or other fabricating processes is generally recognized and its magnitude is known to be, within certain limits, a function of the degree of cold deformation. The plastic deformation that may accompany rapid cooling from elevated temperatures may not materially change the form of the product. The internal stresses so induced are not, therefore, so evident and nonrecognition of their presence has at times led to engineering failures. The heat treatment of aluminum alloys is a relatively new art and little information is available regarding the magnitude of stresses induced during the commercial heat treatment of aluminum alloy products. As the industrial use of aluminum increases, it is inevitable that products of increasingly large volume will be required. It has become necessary in the present commercial utilization of aluminum to heat-treat castings and forgings weighing hundreds of pounds. One of the factors governing the magnitude of internal stresses arising from rapid cooling from elevated temperatures is that of the size of the structure being treated. Some of the other factors are: cooling rate, elastic properties of the alloy, thermal expansivity, thermal conductivity, and the presence or absence of phase changes. Practically all aluminum alloys have a high coefficient of thermal expansion and some are capable of developing relatively high elastic limits. On the other hand, all commercial aluminum alloys have relatively high thermal conductivities, no invariant phase changes, and the quenching temperatures are comparatively low. Two great revolutions in mining occurred during the 20th century. The first took place almost 100 years ago (1903-1905) with Daniel Jackling’s experiment in the economies of scale for large-scale mining at Bingham Canyon. Jackling’s ideas changed the focus of base metal exploration toward lower-grade, high-tonnage deposits. The second revolution was the impact of environmental and social concerns on mining. It started near the end of the 20th century and is still under way. This article speculates on the effects of this second revolution on the future of mineral exploration.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. In order to reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, as different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked-particle flotation, or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented which suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite, and that the bulk of the recovered pyrite is there either as a result of simple entrainment or by being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

Namakwa Sands aims to conserve environmental resources and prevent or minimize environmental impacts from its operations. The challenge faced by Namakwa Sands is the rehabilitation of the arid winter rainfall Strandveld and lowland Succulent Karoo vegetation zones affected by its mining activities. Extensive experimentation with different rehabilitation methods resulted in the development of an effective rehabilitation programme. The use of topsoil as a seed bank and shade-cloth as windbreaks have significantly aided the rehabilitation process. The aim of the programme is to stabilize the soil environment so as to allow the germination and development of the local plant species. The ability to control wind erosion is critical to the success of the rehabilitation effort. A programme of biodiversity audits has been started to measure the recovery of plant species in the rehabilitated area. The principle of continuous improvement, coupled to site-specific rehabilitation studies, is applied to enhance the rehabilitation programme.

The trona deposits near Green River, in southwestern Wyoming are world class in size and quality. They contain more than 25 times the reserves of the next largest trona deposit at Lake Magadi in Kenya. Based on present rates of production, the Green River reserve should last for more than 500 years. Since their discovery in 1938, the Union Pacific Corp. has been instrumental in the promotion, development and production of soda ash in Wyoming. Union Pacific spent several years drilling the deposits and trying to promote them to chemical companies. In 1947, Westvaco and Union Pacific entered into what became the first trona lease agreement. Today, the Green River Basin leads the world in soda ash production, accounting for about 25% of the world's supply. Green River producers process more than 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy) of trona to produce more than 8 Mt/a (9 million stpy) of soda ash. The future for Green River soda ash looks good, with more of the world looking towards the cheaper and higher quality source of soda ash coming from the natural deposits. Production from the Green River deposits should continue to grow as trade barriers and tariffs begin to fall in Europe and energy and environmental costs force the synthetic producers to exit the market.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 delegated to the Bureau of Mines a yearly program of health inspections. Respirable coal mine dust concentrations are measured by Bureau inspectors. Samples of respirable coal mine dust are weighed to determine dust concentration and then analyzed for ash and quartz content. This paper describes the laboratory procedure for determining the percent quartz in the respirable coal mine dust samples.

The identification and-develop¬ment of new construction aggregate resources, the most common mineral mined, is an essential need in this country's growing urban areas. In developing an aggregate exploration program, a thorough geological identification of all potential aggregate resources in an area is still of primary importance but other factors have also to be considered. These include physical properties, end product application, transportation and mining costs, and local government regulations including zoning. The present major aggregate producers are most likely to develop these future resources and are in the best position to initiate comprehensive exploration programs.

For the past twenty years or so the oceans of the world have been transformed in the minds of most Americans from the ultimate and nearly infinite receptacles for sewage and other wastes to an almost sacrosanct and threatened last refuge of Mother Nature from man on Earth. While this general movement has helped somewhat to moderate the flows of pollutants into the oceans, it has had severe and sometimes devastating impacts upon various attempts to develop seabed mineral resources. Marine mining proposals have been easy targets for attack. In most cases, they have short or no histories and involve prototype or first-generation methods. They commonly lack major financial backing, and do not command significant public support. Their constituents are limited. Opposition movements to such proposals have been able to evoke strong support by appealing to this "last refuge" image and depicting mining operations as the final assault. In mounting these public appeals, the movements obtain visibility and support. Because of the small and sometimes tentative status of the constituencies which support particular proposal s, the potential liabilities for opposition movements are minimal.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. Copper smelter slag was leached using sulphuric acid solutions under atmospheric conditions. Base on the composition and phase of copper slag, the effect of the concentration of sulfuric acid and leaching temperature to the leaching growth rate of Fe, Cu, Co and Ni in the copper slag were investigated in this paper. Simultaneously, the influence of sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time, leaching temperature and the amount of sulfuric acid (solid-liquid ratio) to the leaching rate of these metal elements were researched. Experimental results showed that: with the increasing temperature, the dissolution rates of the metals elements increased first and then decreased. Due to the influence of silica gel which was obtained in beginning of leaching, the higher the concentration of sulfuric acid is not conducive to dissolution of the valuable metal elements. The dissolution degree of Fe, Cu, Co and Ni were 92.83% 96.76% 93.62% and 63.41% respectively.

MIZIKAR, Grace, and parlee' studied rates of absorption of oxygen in stagnant liquid silver in a new type of open-ended gas-liquid metal diffusion cell, where the capillary diameters used were 1.5, 2, and 3 mm. They reported that the rates appeared to be controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen atoms in liquid silver and they used their data to arrive at the following equation as a reasonably good representation of the diffusivity (D) of oxygen in liquid silver: D = (14.7)10-4 exp (-7100 ± 3200)/RT cm2/sec Since this type of diffusion cell offers a promising method of measuring diffusivities of gas atoms in liquid metals, the senior author of this note and his students are carrying on a critical examination of the method, and are attempting to improve and extend the technique. The research reported briefly here was designed to examine more carefully the earlier conclusion1 that the absorption rate is diffusion-controlled, and to find out whether the diameter of the cell could be greatly increased and thus extend the method to systems where gas solubilities and diffusion rates are much smaller than in the case of oxygen in silver. For the purpose of these experiments, the open-ended capillary cell used by Mizikar, Grace, and Parlee was replaced by a small cylindrical crucible (1 to 1.7 cm in diam) containing pure silver (to a depth of 1.3 to 3 cm) resting in the bottom of a closed-ended vertical quartz tube, with an evacuated quartz filler tube just above the crucible to reduce dead volume. The method of measuring the rate of absorption was otherwise very similar to that of Mizikar, Grace, and Parlee and all the same precautions were taken. A much smaller and shorter tube furnace was used for heating, but simi- lar precautions about temperature gradients were observed. This technique was nothing more than the application of a Sieverts apparatus to the measurement of rates of absorption in small crucibles of stagnant liquid silver. In each run the volume of gas absorbed (V) was plotted against the square root of time (vt) and apparent diffusivities were calculated from the slope of the line, as described by Mizikar, Grace, and parlee.' Care was taken to use only the data obtained during the early part of the total absorption period while the cell functioned as one of infinite depth. The results at 1000°C are summarized in Table I and Fig. 1. The following conclusions may be drawn: 1) Diffusion cells up to 1.7 cm in diam yield, within experimental error, the same values for the diffusivity of oxygen (D) as the capillary cells of 1.5, 2, and 3 mm in diam employed by Mizikar, Grace, and Parlee. Cell diameters as large as 1.7 cm are probably not desirable for the most precise work. Intermediate sizes, perhaps 0.5 cm, will be most practical. 2) All absorptions measured were consistent with a model where the rate is controlled by the diffusion of gas atoms in the metal. "As a main impurity in primary lithium metal, magnesium is difficult to remove because of the very close relative volatility of the two metals. Electrochemical refining provides a possibility to completely remove Mg in the LiCl-KCl melt prior to Li reduction. MgCl2 reduction processes in LiCl-KCl- MgCl2 melt were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), chronoamperometry and chronopotentiometry. Then potentiostatic electrolysis was carried out and Mg (II) ion was reduced onto a liquid lead cathode from the LiCl-KCl-MgCl2 melt at the Mg deposition potential. The results show that Mg ( II ) is reduced in one step with two-electron transfer. The reduction potential of Mg ( II ) was well defined. The reduction of Mg( II) results in Li ( I ) underpotential deposition at 0.2V more negative potential than that of Mg( II) reduction. Therefore, in order to prevent Li ( I ) from codeposition with Mg, accurately controlling Mg ( II) reduction potential during the potentiostatic electrolysis was necessary. Ninety three to 99 % removal rate of MgCl2 was achieved after 8-12 h electrolysis when liquid lead was used as cathode.IntroductionMetallic Li has been widely used in batteries, light weight alloys and in fusion reactors because of its excellent properties. Currently, the only way in industry to produce metallic Li is by electrowinning from molten LiCl-KCl at about 450 °C [l-5]. LiCl-KCl is the only electrolyte used, because they presents a lower eutectic temperature and KCl shows a slightly higher theoretical decomposition voltage than LiCl, as shown in Table l .The produced metallic Li generally contains 1-2 wt% impurities including Na, K, Al, Ca, Mg, Si, etc. [6l, which are derived from the corresponding metal chloride compounds or metal oxide compounds existing in the LiCl and/or KCl raw materials. These impurities have to be removed by subsequent vacuum distillation at high temperatures to meet the requirements for metal Li purity in the final products. Separation of Mg from Li by vacuum distillation is difficult because their relative volatilities are very close, as shown in Table 2."

Owing mainly to the use of ethylene dibromide in the production of tetraethyl lead for gasoline treatment, there has been a tremendous increase during the past decade in the demand for bromine. In the United States, production, derived mainly as a by-product from the treatment of brines from salt wells, rose steadily from about two million pounds in 1924 to nine million pounds in 1931. In 1936, production amounted to between 20 and 21 million pounds. Much of the increase during the past four or five years has been due to the operation of the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Company's plant, which extracts bromine directly from sea water. The process employed by the Ethyl-Dow Company is somewhat similar to that in use on salt-well brines at their plant at Midland, Michigan, but whereas these brines contain around 1,300 parts per million bromine, sea water contains only 65 to 70 p.p.m.-about as much as the waste effluent in the brine process. By intensive research, however, a process was developed whereby a very considerable percentage of the bromine content of sea water could be recovered, and at a satisfactory operating cost. In its essentials, the process consists in liberating the bromine from the sea water by treat-ment with chlorine, blowing the bromine out of the water by a current of air, and finally absorbing it in a solution of soda-ash.

This paper presents the results of column flotation of a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design is used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to achieve a concentrate of high grade and recovery. A concentration of 15 ppm of non-ionic frother is found to be enough to maximize the recovery at the pH of 9.5.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering)degree Identification of non-linear systems can be a daunting task and in the process industries the problem is complicated considerably by the presence of noise from various sources, non-stationarity of the data and intermittence, such as observed in particulate flows. Traditional methods, such as frequency analysis and linear model-ling do not handle these systems well. Similar problems arise with the application of non-linear theory developed over the last few decades, where much of the analysis depends on embedding of the data in a phase space or pseudophase space, since these methods were not originally designed to deal with noisy systems. In contrast, singular spectrum analysis is a method which can be used to identify structure and distinguish noise from important information in multivariate data, such as the trajectory matrices of time series measurements. It provides an orthogonal basis onto which the data can be transformed, so that components of the time series can be investigated individually. With Monte Carlo methods, the components can be compared with those from linear surrogate data in order to identify possibly non-linearities in the data. In this paper, this versatile technique is briefly explained and illustrated by means of case studies.

The most promising near-term alternative to fuel cell driven vehicles is probably Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV or EV) technology. HEV technology combines the best characteristics of fuel-driven engines, electric motor drives, and energy storage components. It is designed with a combustion engine that functions as the primary power source, and an electric power storage system that functions as the secondary power source. The presence of the secondary power source allows designers to size the combustion engine for cruising power requirements. A new energy source for HEV or EV market will become lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in the near future. LIBs for HEV or EV has large scale about more 10,000 times than small size one for IT devices in order to achieve high electric density/capacity and high efficiency, etc. In those reasons, physical treatment of the batteries is more difficult for stable dismantling in comparison with the smaller one. Hybrid vehicle sales will grow by nearly 400 percent during the next seven years, according to a new report from analyst firm ABI Research. By 2013 hybrids will make up 6 percent of annual U.S. auto sales. The traction battery pack will become air-cooled LIBs which consists of several modules of Li ion battery and connected in series/parallel configuration to provide about >450 VDC, >150 kW peak power, and >80 Ah capacity. As the use of these batteries tends to increase significantly for the next years, it is relevant issues that development of new recycling methods as well as optimization of existing processes to treat spent LIBs for HEV have being addressed in order to obtain sustainability. In this study, physical treatment containing stable electrical discharge of spent LIBs for HEV was carried out for recovery of valuable metals from the batteries. Also In order to increase the yield of valuable metals through physical treatments such as electric discharge of spent batteries, crushing, and classification, we also focused on the recovery of cobalt from +8 mesh fraction due to its large portion in crushed intermediates.
