Authors have been conducting research on autonomous loading operation by wheel loader. Autonomous loading cycles has been demonstrated with real size experimental model. In V shape loading operation, travelling between scooping point and dumping point is dominant factor for cycle time of the operation. The positions of scooping point and dumping point changes with advancing the operation. In the developed system, path planning is performed at the beginning of every cycle. The path is formed by combination of curve and straight path elements. During travelling on the planned path, path following control is applied on the loader to keep position error in narrow range. Positioning of the loader is based on dead reckoning with correction by global positioning system (GPS) data. In a process of path following control, control value for steering angle is determined based on position error in lateral direction. Proposed method of path planning and position control is installed and tested in the real size experimental model. The detail and results will be described in the paper.

The application of the Laplace transformation to problems in the flow of compressible fluids in porous media has provided a large number of exact solutions. For plane radial flow, however, these solutions are either complex integrals or infinite series and are of little value to the field engineer. In the case of production at constant well pressure, the available approximate solutions me valid for large times only. In this paper it is shown that an approximate inversion formula for the Laplace transform, developed for the solution of viscoelastic problems, is applicable to radial flow problems and provides simple analytical solutions to constant terminal pressure problems. The method may be used to obtain approximate solutions to many problems, including media with radial permeability discontinuities, multi-layer formations and pressure buildup in wells after shut-in. The results are compared with the few available computer solutions as well as the large time solutions, and it is shown that this approximate method greatly extends the time interval over which a simple analytical solution is acceptable. INTRODUCTION The study of transient problems in the flow of fluids through porous media has benefited greatly from the application of transform methods. The use of the Laplace transformation for solving parabolic equations has been widely discussed in the field of heat conduction and diffusion as well as in the petroleum literature. Removal of the time variable with the Laplace transformation generally reduces the problem to a boundary value problem which may be solved by standard techniques. A much more formidable problem then faces the engineer, however, for frequently the transform does not possess a simple inverse. The result is that the general inversion integral must be used and this leads to either an infinite integral or an infinite series, both of which are difficult to handle from a computational standpoint. Asymptotic approximations for the inverse have been known for some time and these yield approximate inverse functions that are valid for very large or very small times — but frequently the times of interest lie somewhere between these two extremes. Therefore, some acceptable approximation valid over a larger interval of time is desirable. During the past few years a number of methods for achieving this have been developed and some of these are discussed briefly in this paper. The relative merits of the various methods are not evaluated here, but some general conclusions reached by other authors are given. One of these methods has been applied to problems associated with the radial flow of compressible liquids to producing wells. In the case of production at constant well pressure, the method leads to simple analytical solutions for a number of standard problems; e.g., homogeneous formation, permeability discontinuities, pressure buildup. These solutions greatly extend the range of validity of the asymptotic ones (valid for large times only) and should be of value in studying the behavior of wells producing under constant pressure conditions. The provinces play a key role in this process and have provided much of the thrust for new initiatives. On the other hand, the federal government in Canada in recent years has taken a much more active interest in mineral affairs than previously and has asserted its powers on a number of key policy questions. Some of the initiatives from the two levels of government in Canada have come into conflict with each other and, thus, contributed materially to a state of affairs that includes change, uncertainty and conflict.

"Numerous aspects of underground construction, from structural stability to construction costs, depended on the tunnel quality, including blast damage and the Excavation Damage Zone. Accurately quantifying the extent and severity of damaged rock is a problem. Recent technical developments in the field of Measurement While Drilling (MWD), including software for on-board logging and on-site analysis, have shown potential for rock-mass characterization. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and P-wave velocity measurement have also improved and show similar potential. This paper explores the use of MWD, GPR and P-wave velocity measurements and uses them in techniques for excavation damage characterization and prediction. The paper is based on data collected from a small underground waste-collection site in central Stockholm, Sweden. The data is correlated against rock-mass characteristics and their responses are evaluated. Results indicate potential for excavation damage characterization for all tested techniques, which could minimize blasting damage and improve the over-all tunnel quality. 1 INTRODUCTION During underground excavation the rock mass is influenced in many ways. The Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ) is a result of these influences. The EDZ can be defined by an irreversible change in rock mass properties, for example increased permeability. EDZ is influenced by the excavation method, the rock mass properties and the in-situ stresses in the area of the tunneling. Since the 1990s research has been done on the EDZ by Emsley et al. (1997), Christiansson et al. (2005), Olsson et al. (2009), Ouchterlony et al. (2009), Ittner et al. (2014), and Siren et al. (2015). Based on past literature the EDZ have in this paper been separated in the following subzones: 1. Failure Zone or over-break is the area outside the planned tunnel profile, including the Look-Out and hole deviation. This zone consists of fracture networks (both natural and blasting-induced), that caused rock fall-outs. The extent of the over-break can be determined by volumetric scanning and photogrammetry and the half cast factor can be used as a damage indicator. 2. The Damaged Zone is split into three parts and but the quantity and depth of damage is difficult to measure. Although it can be visualized by sawing of rock slices in the tunnel wall (Olsson et al. 2009), diamond coring (DC) or P-wave velocity reduction (Jern 2001): a. Inner Damage Zone (Crush Zone): It is located directly around the drill hole, and is caused by the shock-wave energy of the detonation. The micro fractures in the Crush Zone produce a white-wash (rock dust) in the half cast. b. Transition Zone: This zone consists of micro fractures that connect and form macro fractures, both radially and parallel to the tunnel wall. The macro fractures are caused by the gas expansion during the detonation of the explosive; it increases the pressure in the (micro) fractures and creates the macro fractures. Seismic reflection, rock slicing and core drilling can be used for the examination. c. Progressing Zone: In this zone the existing radial fractures propagate due to the increase gas pressure inside these macro fractures. Examination methods are seismic reflection, rock slicing and core drilling. In addition, the Peak Particle Velocity (vibrations) could be used to estimate the depth (Tesarik et al. 2011)."

BY the beginning of 1945 the output of petroleum products for war had reached a volume and a rate of growth which practically assured all requirements so long as war continued. The programs for making gasoline, lubricating oils of required quality, toluene for T.N.T., and chemicals for manufacture of synthetic rubber, as well as numerous other lesser petroleum products, were all well in hand, and unless catastrophic developments occurred there was no doubt of the ability of the industry to meet all demands. The end of the fighting found the refining industry working at top capacity on war commodities, but also in position to convert quickly into peacetime civilian production. 100-octane Aviation Gasoline Production of the vital 100-octane aviation gasoline, starting with approximately 44,000- bbl. daily capacity at our entry into the war, reached a top of 525,000 bbl. a day in the United States by the end of hostilities. With 75,- bbl. from other Allied sources, the grand total was 600,000 bbl., or 25,000,000 gal. each 24 hr. available to the armed forces had fighting continued. At times it was a close race between requirements and production, but never were any important military operations involving the use of high-octane aviation gasoline held up or delayed for lack of sufficient output of such material. The undivided effort of the entire refining industry in full cooperation with the Government made this record possible. Little diminution in output followed the German surrender on May 7. Plans called for a correspondingly greater activity for the Japanese war and possibly for well into 1946. But when the Japanese sued for peace on Aug. 10 most contracts were quickly canceled. Substantial stocks, reputed to be somewhere between 20,000,000 to 30,000,000 bbl., built up largely between V-E and V-J day pending organization of the larger Japanese war program envisaged after Germany gave up, were in the Government's hands in this country, in addition to working stocks in the war areas. Toluene and Lubricating Oil Requirements for toluene for T.N.T. increased rapidly as bombing speeded UP with increasing control of the air by the Allies in Europe and Asia. Production in excess of T.N.T. requirements which had been going into 1000-Octane aviation fuel blending during 1943 and 1944 was again drawn into explosive manufacture early in 1945. In anticipation of the war continuing into 1946, two new plants were ordered constructed, the decision being announced in April, plans calling for one of them to get into production about the end of 1945, the other in the first quarter of 1946. Natural rubber/organophilic clay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized. A brown bentonite from Paraiba’s State, Brazil was modified with a sodium salt and treated with quaternary ammonium salt hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The clay in its natural state, after cation exchange with sodium and after organophilization was characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, thermal analysis. Nanocomposite samples were prepared containing 10 resin percent of organophilic clay. The vulcanized samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM. The nanocomposites obtained showed improvement in their mechanical properties in comparison with samples without clay.

"IntroductionMANY PAPERS presented on developments in the Canadian Petroleum Industry •during the past few years have commenced with this general sentence: ""The past year has been a record •one for the oil industry in Canada, with new records being set in nearly all phases •of exploration and development ,activity"". This sentence applies equally well to 1951. It is not possible to outline all the details of the broken records in exploration, development, and production but general comparisons can be made. There are several significant developments that have stolen the spotlight during 1951, some of which were foreseen in 1950 and some which were not. Among the high-lights were the following:(1) The greatly •expanded activity in the search for gas, which was touched off by the new Alberta regulations covering gas leases and reservations.(2) The discovery of commercial oil production in the Williston basin of North Dakota and Manitoba, which will have far reaching effects on Canadian oil.(3) The greatly increased activity in northern Alberta, northwestern British Columbia, the southern Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.(4) The new discoveries in the general central Alberta area.(5) The granting •of a permit for an oil pipeline to the Pacific coast.(6) The arrival of Western Canadian crude in central Ontario.(7) The number of new refineries completed, commenced, or proposed.(8) The present •and proposed expansion in the petrochemical industry.Most of the remarks made on various exploration and development •activities will refer to Western Canada operations, primarily because the greatest •activity and the most significant developments have been there. Eastern Canada exploration and development operations were at a slightly higher level than in 1950."

A new monitoring device called SAFEBOLT (Stress And Force Evaluator in BOLTs) has been recently developed at McGill University. The device is essentially an alternative to the load cell, it permits the monitoring of bolt axial load in the field. The SAFEBOLT system consists of a portable readout unit, a connecting cable and the SAFEBOLT device, which is installed in the bolt head. The new device can be installed on any industry standard rockbolt or rebar. The device is completely encapsulated in the bolt head, which makes it resistant to corrosion, rugged, and free of any electric wires. Pilot tests at two underground Quebec mines were carried out and helped improve the initial design of the device head.

"Many tens of thousands of hectares of forested land will be disturbed and reclaimed in the surface mineable Athabasca oil sands area during the next few decades. The surface area disturbed by Syncrude’s Mildred Lake development alone exceeds 10 000 ha to date. It is not clear that reforestation of disturbed areas will best accommodate the aspirations of all stakeholders, particularly traditional users of the land. A five-year research program by Syncrude Canada Limited and the Fort McKay First Nations has examined the feasibility of raising bison on land reclaimed after disturbance by oil sands development. Forage productivity and carrying capacity for bison was comparable to that of grasslands elsewhere in Alberta. Concerns regarding compaction of newly rebuilt soil by bison traffic proved unfounded. Bison demonstrated weight gains typical for ranched bison and calving rates averaged 90%, a value typical for ranched bison. The animal husbandry problems encountered were typical of those occurring on bison ranches elsewhere in Alberta. An economic analysis indicates that a 1000 ha bison ranch on reclaimed land has a net present value that compares very favourably with a similar area supporting commercial forest. Subject to approval by Alberta Environmental Protection, the current research project will be expanded as a pilot commercial ranching venture in order to explore its commercial viability as a business venture by the Fort McKay First Nations. At the same time, measures will be implemented to resolve various regulatory issues associated with commercial bison production in the oil sands area.BackgroundSyncrude Canada Ltd. (Syncrude) is proposing, in its land reclamation strategy, a feature that is, depending on one’s background and perspective, regarded as an innovative approach to land reclamation, a threat to the regional forest industry, a creative response to aboriginal stakeholder concerns, a reneging on reclamation commitments, an opportunity to provide an ongoing economic base for postoil sands regional economy, or an environmentally unsound use of the land. These diverse and sometimes strong reactions have been generated by the proposal to introduce bison, either free-ranging or commercial ranched, to the reclaimed landscape."

The 1981 Review: In the late 1970s there was an upsurge of interest in the prospecting and mining of this countryÆs mineral resources. That upsurge of interest was accompanied by a mounting public concern over the damage mining operations might do to the environment. Concern was also expressed about what some people perceived as inadequacies in the legislation which regulates mining and the grant of mining privileges, and inconsistencies in the relationship of that legislation to other legislation regulating land use and the use of resources.

The hydrophobic character of sapphire surfaces in SDS solutions was examined with respect to the aggregative nature of the adsorbed surfactant phase. It was found that, at equilibrium, sapphire surfaces having adsorbed SDS bi-layers exhibited no contact angle. Conversely, when the adsorbed SDS was found to be mi-cellar in nature, sapphire surfaces developed significant hydrophobic character. The surface states as detected by Fr -IRIIRS conformational analysis were found to be reversible with temperature. The variation in adsorption density with temperature was studied by in situ Fr-IRIIRS. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated to be -1.6 kcal/mole. Although the adsorbed SDS was found to undergo a reversible phase change between 25 and 32°C, similar to SDS in solution, the extent of adsorption was not reversible with temperature.

Fault diagnosis systems have attracted growing interest in a number of engineering fields. The number of applications has increased and successful results have been widely reported. The fault diagnosis system presented in this paper is integrated, and it monitors the states of the process and performs fault detection and diagnosis on the process equipment. The monitoring of process states is carried out by means of Kohonen Self-Organising Maps that is a powerful tool in visualisation and analysis of high dimensional data in engineering applications. This paper presents the results of SOM analysis carried out on the Outokumpu flash smelting process. The subsystems analyzed in more detail are the condition of the concentrate burner, the condition of the gas line on the basis of the pressure distribution in the process and the cooling water circulation of the waste heat boiler, and the condition of the furnace and furnace equipment on the basis of the temperature distribution in the furnace and gas line. This paper describes some aspects about the relationship between copper electrorefining addition reagents and the hydrogen in the cathode. The conditions of electrorefining were studied by factorial design methods. The advantages of this technique are reduction in the number of tests, well organized experiments; improvement in productivity and reliability of results. The dosage of the two main addition agents, glue and thiourea, were varied simultaneously and compared with the hydrogen content in the cathode. The influence of these factors, as well their interactions were analyzed by statistical methods denominated ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). The increase of thiourea quantities, within of levels studied, influenced significantly at 95% confidence in the hydrogen content in copper cathode.

A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson. Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001.000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,471,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

"Typical mining operating costs can be divided between extraction (30 % to 70 %), comminution (30 % to 50 %) and separation (5% to 20% ). Cornminition process costs, representing an important contribution to mining operating costs, can themselves be divided roughly between energy (50 %) and linerkharge wear (50 %). Developing the ability of predicting mill wear will allow a more accurate estimation of wear costs. However, total media wear in a given ball mill grinding process is a product of three recognized wear mechanisms those being abrasion, corrosion and impact. Further, the contribution to total media wear of each of these wear mechanisms has not been well established. In this paper, a overview of abrasive, corrosive and impact wear mechanisms is made from which an empirical wear prediction procedure is proposed. Further, future directions in wear prediction research is outlined. Introduction In the course of a programme of research on beryllium in progress in these laboratories, knowledge of the recrystallization temperature became necessary. As the information is not available in the literature, the determination of this temperature for metallic beryllium was undertaken. By the reduction of grain size through working and recrystallization and the probable simultaneous induction of preferred orientation, it was hoped to improve the working properties of beryllium at lower temperatures. The recrystallization temperature is usually determined by observing the lowest temperature of annealing at which new crystals are formed in severely cold-worked metal or alloys. This temperature is profoundly influenced by the following factors: the purity of the metal, in the case of an element, or the composition of the alloy; the degree of straining or working; the temperature of straining; the original grain size; and the time held at the annealing temperature. The observed temperature is lowered by higher purity, more severe straining, lower temperature of working, smaller original grain size, and longer time of annealing. Beryllium presents special difficulties in that the percent elongation in tension is effectively zero, so that ordinary squeezing or rolling was not possible. A possible means of straining was suggested by the fact that indentation hardness tests could be made. It was known from earlier work that the metal could be worked at elevated temperatures, so that working at the lowest feasible temperature and quenching might also be a means of producing strain. The purity of the metal is also a point of some uncertainty in the case of beryllium. Losano has prepared 99.96% Be which appears to be the best reported. Distilled metal used in the present work approached this purity. However, by analogy with other metals, residual impurities may have a pronounced effect on the recrystallization. Further purification of beryllium would evidently entail considerable difficulties due to the highly reactive nature of the metal, and was not attempted.

Unlike molecular high explosives, commercial explosives based on ammonium nitrate do not detonate ideally according to the theoretical model for steady state, one-dimensional detonation. One of the reasons for this deviation from ideal detonation is the slower chemical reaction, due to less intimate contact between the oxidiser and fuel components. It is well known that the inclusion of gas pockets, such as microballoons, in the formulation of ammonium nitrate based emulsions and watergels enhances the performance of these explosives. Various different interpretations of the “hot spot” theory have been proposed to explain this phenomenon.
