In a present process to treat the tungsten carbide tool waste, the wastes are roasted in air and then an alkali leaching is carried out in an autoclave. An environmentally friendly process is required to recover rare metals (Co and W) from the wastes. The effect of mechano-chemical (MC) treatment on leaching of rare metals was investigated in this study. The solvent extraction and crystallization-stripping methods were applied to separate and recover tungsten and cobalt in the leached solutions. The MC treatment for the rare metal leaching is effective to dissolve rare metals from the wastes due to the change in crystalline structure of WC and oxidation of WC with KMnO4. Cobalt ions are extracted with D2EHPA by a cation exchange reaction. Tungsten in the leachate can be extracted by TOA (tri-octyl amine) as an extractant, because tungsten species exist as a form of anionic species in acidic solution. The rare metals in organic phase are recovered as insoluble salts such as oxalates and ammonium salts in the crystallization-stripping process. Sungun Copper Mine, which is the second largest copper mining operation in Iran has a large tailings storage facility with a seepage control dam located downstream of the main dam. Surface and groundwater in surrounding area of the tailings storage facility has been monitored for ten years. This paper will discuss the results of the surface and groundwater monitoring and seepage control at the Sungun Copper Mine. The results of the study show that if the tailings storage facility influence the water quality of the rivers, this effect is not significant, so that the prevailing parameters of the measured parameters were within the permissible standard of drinking water in Iran.CITATION:Rashidi Nejad, F, Naraghi, S and Pirouznia, N, 2018. An investigation was made to devise and evaluate a flexible flotation method for beneficiating typical tactite types of calcareous scheelite - bearing ores ; these scheelite - bearing ores are available in large tonnages in deposits containing 0.2 to 0.3 pct tungsten trioxide . The objective was to achieve a high recovery of the tungsten in concentrates , containing a minimum of 10 pct WO3 , that would be suitable for chemical processing into high- quality synthetic scheelite . The principal problems encountered and resolved by bench- scale flotation tests on ore samples from five different deposits were to define the conditions and reagent combinations essential for ( 1 ) achieving selective flotation of a small amount of scheelite from a large amount of calcite and ( 2 ) controlling the effect of small amounts of calcium , magnesium , and iron salts in the ores and water used . The flotation process was evolved from batch tests and continuous runs in a pilot - scale mill with a capacity of 100 lb per hour . The flotation process comprised ( 1 ) removal of sulfide minerals , ( 2 ) conditioning the residual ore pulp with sodium carbonate , quebracho , and trisodium phosphate , and ( 3 ) rougher flotation and single - stage cleaning of a scheelite concentrate . In a pilot plant run , over 91 pct of the tungsten was recovered from ore containing 0.27 pct WO3 , in a concentrate containing 11.2 pct WO3 .

Geochemical prospecting method using stream sediments, soils and rock chips has been tested to see the applicability for the typical Kuroko field in Japan. Three independent anomalies have been detected in maps being shown by grav densities of cells which are represented by the results of factor analysis as well as distribution of minor elements scaled in logarithm. A small vein type mineralization which has outcrops could be attributed to the origin of them whereas the one near the surface of known Kuroko deposit to a coincidence. The addition of drill core geochemistry is required to complete the interpretation.

A theory is presented for the static penetration of a single rigid wedge into brittle material. The material considered is one which exhibits both crushing and chipping phases in the penetration process. If the wedge angle and three parameters are specified, the theory predicts forces and associated penetrations during both the crushing and chipping phases. For certain ranges of the parameters agreement with the limited experimental data available is promising, except for the initial phase of the penetration process where refinements on the proposed theory are required. The theory also predicts that for certain values of the wedge angle and other known parameters, the chipping process does not occur and penetration is due entirely to crushing. When viewed in detail, the drilling of rock by percussive means involves, among other things, system dynamics, actuating forces, dynamic stress levels and the actual penetration mechanism of the bit into rock. If rock drills are to be significantly improved, a thorough understanding of the entire system would be highly desirable. In this paper, one aspect of the system, namely the mechanism of penetration of the bit, will be studied in detail. It has been found1 that for the velocities encountered in percussive drilling (of the order of 20 fps) a static analysis adequately describes the penetration process, at least for some rocks. Hence, we will only be concerned with describing analytically the static penetration of a single wedge shaped tool. It will further be assumed that the wedge is long enough to permit a two-dimensional analysis. Numerous authors have studied the static penetration of a wedge into rock. The following papers give some of this work and provide additional references to other work. Cheatham2,3 has assumed the rock to behave plastically and has obtained force-penetration equations for both Coulomb-Mohr and parabolic yield criteria. Evans and Murrell4 have studied the penetration of two types of coal and have found equations relating the penetration characteristic (P/dSc) to wedge angle for the various strength coals tested. race' attempted to find a correlation between hardness as determined by indenting the material and other mechanical properties and concluded that the results of such a test are generally inconclusive. His paper however contains a very extensive bibliography on the indenting of many different materials. Gnirk6 also has a fairly complete literature review on the static penetration of rock, of which he makes use in his indexing studies. A wide range of behavior is found in the wedge penetration of different rocks under different external conditions. For example, a rock that is essentially elastic-brittle at standard pressure may become elastic-plastic at a high confining pressure.7 It has also been observed4. " that some rocks will merely be crushed and indented by a wedge, whereas others will crack and form chips, furthermore the existence or non-existence of chips depends in great measure on the geometry of the indentor, type of rock and the depth of penetration. Hence, to attempt a theory which embraces all possible behavior is not practical at present. We, therefore, confine our attention to predicting the force-penetration characteristic and volume removal behavior for a type of rock which exhibits both crushing and chipping phases in the penetration process. Such behavior is characteristic of the harder rocks such as granites and represents a more difficult problem than the behavior of softer rocks such as coal and certain sandstones. In this preliminary study an attempt will be made to describe only the essential features of this complex penetration process. A qualitative description of these essential features is obtained with the aid of Fig. 1.1, where a wedge of vertex angle 28 is shown at some intermediate stage of the penetration process. As the wedge advances, the rock is fragmented (i.e. crushed) in some local region surrounding the wedge, the shape of this region being unknown. Simultaneous with the fragmentation in this local region, essentially elastic stresses are assumed to be building up in the surrounding rock. When a certain penetration level, di+1, is reached, the stresses along some surface are sufficient to cause failure and a chip is thus formed. The process now repeats, i.e., a crushing phase followed by the formation of a chip.

"With regard to control environment pollution in the roasting pretreatment of sulfur & arsenic-bearing gold concentrate, roasting of double-layered pellet was proposed. In the paper, the characteristics of double-layered pellet roasting were studied. Removal and solidification rates of sulfur and arsenic were investigated as primary factors. The result indicated that the removal and solidification rates of arsenic reached up to 95.91 % and 98.95% while the sulfur was 97.19% and 97.90% respectively on the premise of adopting slaked lime as solidified agent at temperature of 6000, the package proportion of 2.14 and roasting time of 3h. However, pyrite and arsenopyrite were transformed to hematite and magnetite and product of solidification mainly consisted of calcium sulfate, calcium arsenate and calcium sulfite within optimum roasting parameters.IntroductionUtilization of refractory gold resources has been gradually concentrated on with the depletion of the gold resources which are easy to deal with in the world [1]. Sulfur and arsenic-bearing gold ore is a typical refractory gold one, in which ultrafme gold is encapsulated in the structure of metal sulfide minerals [2,3], so it gives poor recovery through direct cyanide leaching. These refractory ores need pretreatment before the process of cyanide leaching to undermine lattice structure of pyrite and arsenopyrite containing gold [4] so that the gold could touch with cyanide solution [5]. Among various methods of pretreatment, conventional roasting method is most effective, but this process generates gases such as S02 and As203 harmful to environment. Therefore solidification roasting was proposed to solve this problem occurring in the conventional roasting at the end of last century."

The usual analytical determinations made in analyzing coal are comprised in the proximate and ultimate analysis and the determination of calorific value. The proximate analysis includes determinations of moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash; the ultimate analysis determinations of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and ash. The proximate analysis is an empirical process, and the results, obtained, especially for volatile matter and fixed carbon, are materially influenced by the method of conducting the determinations. This fact must be kept in mind in comparing coal analyses from different laboratories for classification purposes. Unless these laboratories have followed the same standard methods, differences due to variations in the analytical methods may, in some cases, be large enough to change the classification of the coal. It is unfortunate that the determinations of volatile matter and fixed carbon, which are most used in coal classification, are the two that are subject to the greatest variations. Moisture comes next in the scale of variation. The ultimate analysis is less influenced by method, since it comprises the determination of definite chemical elements. However, even the ultimate analysis is subject to errors, due to inorganic carbon from carbonates and to inorganic hydrogen from water. For these reasons it is evident that the Committee on Coal Classification must be informed on the evolution of methods of coal analysis in America and the average differences in analytical results that may be expected from variations in methods. The committee should be informed also on which methods should be accepted as standard for classifying coal and on the magnitude of the differences in results that may be expected from duplicate samples of the same coal sent to different laboratories for analysis by the same standard methods. It is the purpose of the present paper to provide this information. The subject will be discussed under the following main heads:

Introduction The Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is on the Alberta side of the Crowsnest pass, twelve miles from the Alberta British Columbia boundary-line. Here, five coal seams of Lower Cretaceous age are found in the Kootenay formation. They outcrop on the north and south slopes of the valley, with strike approximately N.30°W., paralleling the main range of the Rocky mountains, and dip about 40 deg. westward. Of the five seams, only two, designated No. 1 and No. 2, have been worked to date. On the West Canadian Collieries property, No. 1 seam ranges in thickness from thirty feet to nil. Generally, it has a hard, strong conglomerate roof. No. 2 seam is separated from No. 1 by forty-five feet of shales and sandstones. It has a thickness of eight to thirty feet.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

Every shift provides different conditions and challenges. Coping with stress is an important tool to maintain your physical and mental health. Now, back to mom. Studies on stress tell us that shifting your focus away from what is causing your stress increases your ability to cope. Counting to 10 is one method. Science proves mom right. The stress response We are born with the stress response, which is a survival instinct, sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. When approached by a tiger in the jungle, our ancestors would perceive danger and prepare to fight or run. The body prepares for the fight or flight response in a number of ways. The bloodstream brings extra glucose and oxygen (fuel) to the heart, the sense of pain is dulled, and memory and thinking improve. The pupils dilate for better vision and the lungs take in more oxygen, while heart rate and blood pressure increase. Body hairs become erect, as puffed-out hair makes an animal look bigger and more dangerous. Once the perceived danger is gone - we have run fast enough to get away from the tiger or won the fight - the body returns to normal functions. Unfortunately, civilization gives us too many opportunities to experience this response. If activated too often, it can create wear and tear on the body, which may lead to injury and illness. Chronic and traumatic stress There are two key types of stress: chronic stress and traumatic stress. Both types can cause both physical and psychological symptoms. Chronic stress builds up from the day-to-day hassles. Traumatic stress results from a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a mine disaster, or the sudden death of a loved one. Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of a number of health problems including heart disease, depression, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Traumatic stress may lead to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Miners may experience both chronic and traumatic stress in their work.

In the limestone area of Tintic and other mining districts of the Great Basin region of Utah, it has been observed that surface-outcrops of ore occur but seldom, and are mainly confilled to points of relatively low elevation, where the veins cross some basin or ravine. Nowhere does a considerable body of ore outcrop on the tops or high up on the slopes of the hills. Mining operations, on the other hand, have shown that large and continuous ore-deposits frequently occur in depth in the limestone, beneath large masses of barren rock. Such orebodies, when followed upward in the lodes, are found to terminate at well-defined levels, without reaching the surface. Yet the minerals-bearing fissures themselves extend above the top of the ore, being often traceable, though barren of all valuable minerals, for hundreds of feet above the stopes in the mines, and even observable in outcrops at the surface. This abrupt cessation of the ore at a uniform horizon does not appear to be connected with any change in the countryrock adjacent to the lodes. The strata above and below this horizon seem to be in every way equally favorable to ore-deposition. Explorations above it have developed an open-fissured country, barren not only of ore, but also of indications that minerals bearing gold, silver, lead or copper were ever deposited in the strata at that elevation. The height reached by the ore, while usually constant throughout the length of a given lode, may vary in particular sections, from the operation of local causes. Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

The dissolution of metals from various metal-mine tailings has been studied through a series of submerged tailings batch tests at U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories. Tailings selected for this study included both reactive (as determined by column leaching studies) and benign tailings. Metal mobilization in aerated (97 pct saturated with oxygen) samples appeared to be consistently greater than metal dissolution from stagnant (79 pct or 70 pct saturated with oxygen) waters. In the early weeks of the study, sulfate concentrations increased with solid-liquid contact time, while calcium dissolution remained nearly constant. Metal concentrations varied in relation to solid-liquid contact time and aeration. Leachate pH appeared to be nearly independent of solid-liquid contact time for basic tailings. Reactive tailings having both a submerged and a surface component demonstrated increased metal mobility.

This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

The legal issues surrounding the regulation of subsidence are among the major concerns facing the underground mining industry today. Whether subsidence occurs almost immediately as a result of longwall mining or without warning as a result of room and pillar mining conducted years ago, the resulting disputes are highly controversial and typical of the disputes involving the competing interests of surface and mineral estate owners. Until recently, the law governing these disputes was firmly established under the common law. The passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act 1, the utilization of new mining technologies, and the general heightened environmental awareness of our times, however, have interjected new issues into this area of the law. State and Federal court decisions and administrative agency interpretations have helped clarify some of the issues. However, as evidenced by the many recent lawsuits between operators, surface owners, and regulatory agencies, many uncertainties still exist.

The operations of Bethlehem Copper are situated in the south-central interior of British Colombia at an elevation of 4900 feet above sea level. Main road and rail transportation systems pass through Ashcroft in the Thompson Valley, which is 28 miles by road from the minesite. The operation was the first low-grade open-pit porphyry copper mine in British Colombia. The minerals are chiefly chalcopyrite and bornite, while the rock is principally feldspar and quartz. In the outer fringes of the orebodies sane pyrite is present. Average grade of mill feed is 0.55% copper.

This paper relates cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) risk management theory to actual coal enterprises in China. The 3 phases of M&A are preparation, implementation and integration. By using the Analytic Hierarchy Process and fuzzy evaluation methods, we will try to establish a model to assess risks of the cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises. We then apply this model to the case of Yankuang Group acquisition of the Felix Company and receive the assessment results. There are significant reasons for quantitative research on risks of cross-border M&A of China?s coal enterprises, such as effective prevention and risk-aversion, and facilitation of cross-border M&As.

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

A process for making electrolytic copper of high quality from copper flotation concentrates is described. The concentrates are first slurried and then subjected to a high-temperature, high-pressure, oxidation-leaching operation under controlled conditions. The resulting slurry from the oxidation-leaching operation is cooled or flashed to atmospheric pressure and then subjected to a solids-liquid separation. The separated liquor, containing the recovered copper values, is cooled and then fed to an electrolytic deposition operation where metallic copper cathodes of high purity are produced. The spent electrolyte is then subjected to a sulfide treatment to precipitate the residual amounts of copper not deposited in the electrolytic cells. The precipitated copper sulfide is recovered and recycled in the form of a slurry to the initial stages of the process.

A new method of manufacturing the wavy-tilt-dam(WTD) mechanical seal has been mentioned. In this method, the special equipment is designed to provide a predetermined force to external and inner circular surface of the ring. After milling the end face of the seal by grinding miller and releasing the preload, the wavy-tilt-dam can be done on the seal surface. In this paper, a prediction model is built up to investigate the relationship between the predetermined force and the deformation on the surface of the ring by using ANSYS software. A WTD ring is manufactured by this method which approves that the prediction model is in accord with the real process and this manufacturing method of the WTD mechanical seal is a proper choice.
