DURING the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000° C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. The silica tube was connected with an evacuating system so constructed that the volatilized gases could be removed from time to time and a low vacuum of 0.002 to 0.0010 mm. of mercury continuously maintained. At no time during the period of heating or in the removal of the gases did the evacuated system come in contact with rubber stoppers or any rubber connections, making contamination from such a source impossible. In other words, the only volatile products that could be obtained must necessarily have come from the steel itself or from the glass and fused quartz system or from the mercury used as a sealing agent. In the earlier experiments, the steel treated was in the form of turnings, but this practice was discarded because the weights of the turnings before and after being heated were widely inconsistent, even when taken from the same piece of steel. This discrepancy developed largely through variation in the amount of metal volatilized with the gases; this metal could always be seen in the form of a ring where it condensed in the cooler portion of the tube either in the amorphous or crystalline condition. This paper investigates dry drilling as a feasible alternative to meet current requirements for improvements in mining productivity in an increasingly competitive world.A field test program was conducted in the surface facilities of a hard rock mine in Sudbury, Canada, to investigate the potential use of dry drilling in underground bulk mining as a conceivably faster and more economical method than wet drilling. The test work consisted of the monitoring of advance rates and bit life while a series of 165 mm diameter holes, wet and dry, were drilled with compressed air at both mine (0.69 MPa) and high (1.72 MPa) pressure levels. The results indicate that penetration rates can be increased by approximately 24 per cent by drilling dry with high air pressure and by approximately 27 per cent by drilling dry with mine air as compared with wet drilling under the same conditions. Dry drilling also has the effect of increasing bit life by up to 69 per cent. An economic analysis for typical hard rock mines indicated that drilling productivity and cost savings can be increased by approximately 23 per cent when dry drilling is utilised.The testing program indicates that dry drilling has the potential to become a feasible technique with regard to performance, productivity and costs.

The gold province of Otago occupies an area of upwarped basement, the Otago Schist, comprising predominantly quartzofeldspathic and volcanogenic metasediments. This assemblage is the product of collisional tectonic deformation and associated metamorphism, mainly to lower greenschist facies, during the Rangitata Orogeny (200-100 Ma). Historically this region has produced 240 tonnes of gold, 4% (10 t.) of which was from the mining of Cretaceous goldquartz mineralised vein systems. Auriferous vein systems in the Otago Schist are mainly hosted within NW trending normal fault-fracture arrays, however NW trending reverse fault-hosted vein systems also occur. We propose that the Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary Otago Schist structure represents a regional anticlinorium containing flexural folds of at least two wavelengths. The anticlinorium structure has been quantified by determining variations in angular discordance between schistosity and the Otago Peneplain, a Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary erosion surface covering most of the Otago district. A structural model for the evolution of the post-collisional anticlinorium requires the cooling surficial zone (carapace) of a retrograding metamorphic belt to behave as an elastic lid. Erosion of topographic load on the carapace drove isostatic uplift, which was greatest in the tectonically thickened core of the orogen. In this way differential uplift produced flexural deformation in the elastic carapace, expressed as a large scale arching of the orogenic belt. Flexure created tangential longitudinal strains in the outer-arc, leading to extension and the formation of mineralised normal faults. These structures are separated by a neutral surface from shortening and associated mineralised reverse faults in the inner-arc. Our structural model predicts that the distribution of auriferous lodes should be localised about zones of maximum flexural curvature, where the tangential longitudinal strains are highest. As a result, NW-SE hinge regions separating schistosity dip domains in the Otago gold province may have new found significance as potential exploration targets.

The effect of interrupted quenching (IQ) treatments on natural aging and bake hardening response of Al-Mg-Si alloy was investigated by hardness measurements, tensile test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that interrupted quenching at 100oC could effectively suppress natural aging and improve bake hardening response. The optimized interrupted quenching treatment is 100oC for 45min, which gives the alloy a relatively low T4 temper strength and higher bake hardening response. The formation of highly dense cluster(2) during the interrupted quenching could be the reason for suppressing the natural aging and accelerating the precipitation of ß? phase during the paint bake treatment. In addition, interrupted quenching at higher temperature (170oC) results in unfavorable properties in both T4 temper and paint bake treatment. The formation of large precipitates is responsible for these undesired effects.

The authors have accumulated published data on residual soil and rock tunnels in the United States and have compared it to transit tunneling experience in Atlanta, Georgia, and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions. Two 6.1 meter (20 foot) diameter shield driven, compressed air tunnels were constructed for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) connecting the Five Points Station (central hub) with the Peachtree Center Station (first station on the north line). Because of the historic multi-story structures above the tunnels and the variety of subsurface conditions, a comprehensive ground monitoring and observation program was conducted. Conclusions are drawn regarding residual soil and rock ground response due to tunneling. Comparisons are made to ground response due to tunneling in other soil and rock conditions.

In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.

Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) is used in this study to manufacture Al-based nano-composites. Ultrasonic cavitation plays an important role in refining the microstructure, dispersing the nanoparticles and breaking up clusters of nanoparticles. In this paper, 6061/A356 alloys and Al2O3/SiC nanoparticles are used as the matrix alloys and the reinforcements, respectively. The nanoparticles were inserted into the molten alloy and dispersed by ultrasonic cavitation and acoustic streaming. A previously developed multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was used to study the cavitation and the nanodispersion phenomena during ultrasonic processing of these alloys. A comparison between the mechanical properties of the as-cast 6061 and 356 alloys and nano-composites has been performed.

INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. The bulk handling industries have long been plagued with problems in their attempt to obtain one of their major goals - the maximum efficiency for which a bulk handling flow system was designed. Mentor Dynamics Ltd. is an international firm with offices in Canada, Japan, and the United States. Mentor Dynamics Ltd. is in the business of solving the "why not" of a system and engineers the solution for the problem. Studies of the varied difficulties encountered with bulk flow systems indicate that 90% of all flow problems fall into one or more of the following categories: abrasion, impact, sticking, and/or inadequate design. These problems can occur with a myriad of bulk solids: coal, gypsum, aragonite, phosphate, fly ash, ore. Solutions to the problems are as varied as the problems. The proper lining material, ceramic, urethane, rubber, and/ or ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, must be coupled with the correct fastening system, annular ring and 'F' cap, weld washer, button head fastener, weld studs and/or nuts and bolts.

Today road construction sites utilize more and more information modeling in design phases as well as model based 3-D machine control systems in site operations. For main contractor, the management and control of all the site operations is a demanding task including also many challenges created by continuously developing new technology. In the paper, the main requirements for successful dynamic site management are introduced. The dynamic management means real-time possibilities for information acquiring, transfer and further utilization of the information in the management. An integration model to expand the current way of management and the utilization of present 3-D machine control systems is introduced. Different practical test results using two new different dynamic management systems are presented and evaluated. The first experiments and the results have been provided using the prototype system developed in a research project called DigiINFRA by the University of Oulu and Technical Research Center of Finland. Also, there have been tested a new commercial management system developed recently in Finland. In the conclusion, an expectation for the next generation for more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded.

A generalization of Gy?s model for the fundamental sampling error introduced the new ?parameter for the dependent selection of particles?, denoted as Cij. This allows for modeling deviations from the ideal situation where the selection of a pair of particles is composed of two independent selections. The generalized model potentially leads to more accurate variance estimates in the case of clustering of particles, differences in densities or sizes of the particles or repulsive inter-particle forces. A straightforward and practically applicable method is needed for the determination of this parameter for miscellaneous mixtures in industrial settings. In this contribution, the feasibility of using digital image analysis to determine this parameter Cij, will be demonstrated. Line transect sampling of a digital image was used to construct a transition probability matrix. A new algorithm to derive quantitative estimates for Cij will be presented and discussed. The applicability was verified by a photograph of zirconium silicate particles of sizes typical for industries dealing with pharmaceutical, food/feed, and environmental applications. Conditions affecting the practical applicability are identified and potential pitfalls will be discussed, including e.g. how a potential unrepresentative surface can affect the quality of the estimate of Cij.

Last year in the US alone, about 425 Mt (468 million st) of minerals and coal were beneficiated by froth flotation. This number indicates that from 1983 there was a 10% increase in tonnage of min¬erals and coal beneficiated by the indus¬try. A significant improvement was seen in the tonnage processed by the nonferrous minerals and coal industries. BP Minerals America installed 85 m; (3000 cu ft) flotation cells at the Bing¬ham Canyon mine and concentrator. The new flotation circuit has fewer than 100 cells compared to 2000 flotation cells used in the old plant (Mining Engi¬neering, November 1988). Column flotation use on a commer¬cial scale continues to expand as seen from the interest expressed at the Col¬umn Flotation Symposium (Column Flotation '88). The Magma Copper Co., San Manuel Division replaced all con¬ventional cells with 1.8 x 12 m (6 x 40 ft) column flotation cells for copper con¬centrate cleaning. Also, 1220 mm and 760 mm-diam (48 in. and 30 in.-diam) column cells are operating at the plant in the molybdenum circuit. A commercial Diester Flotaire col¬umn cell for fine coal recovery was installed at the United Coal Wellmore No. 20 plant. The 36.8 m3 (1300 cu ft) cell recovers 13.6 to 18 t/h (15 to 20 stph) of -590 gm (-28 mesh) coal. A similar unit has been installed at Tanoma Mining Co. in Pennsylvania. Various modifications of the column cells are being designed around the world. Jameson (Mining and Metal¬lurgy, 1988) described a new concept whereby the feed and air stream mixture is discharged into a cylindrical column of about 1.2 m (4 ft) height. Recovery and grade of nonferrous minerals have been reported to be better than that in a four-stage conventional flotation clean¬ing circuit. Flotation reagents American Cyanamid and Dow Chemical continued development of a new generation of sulfide collectors. A general feeling is development of new sulfide collectors has not kept up with flotation technology. Additionally, joint efforts between industry and chemical suppliers will likely be necessary to realize the economic benefits of the new technologies, since new chemistries respond differently compared to the conventional collectors. Flocculant development in recent years has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rothenborg reported on development of a new flocculant family (a hydroxymated polyacrylamide desig¬nated S-6703) that has shown consider¬able promise in red mud clarification. Plant testing showed that this new floc¬culant could replace starch and poly¬acrylate and provide significantly higher overflow clarity. Barol Kami (Siirak) and Cleveland¬Cliffs (Hancock) reported development of an amphoteric apatite collector (ATRAC 873) that was used in Tilden's silica flotation process to increase apatite rejection. The collector was engineered for the particular flotation conditions in the complex Tilden process. Significant plant testing with ATRAC 873 showed that this reagent gave significantly in¬creased apatite rejection without any effect on silica flotation effectiveness or selectivity. Electrostatic separation Electrostatic separation is now em¬ployed in the precious metals mining industry to recover gold and silver grills from crushed slag. The installation at Paradise Peak has prompted other op¬erators to consider this application. In another development, attractive potentials for treating very fine minerals (-45 µm or -325 mesh) are being devel¬oped by Advanced Energy Dynamics and by the Department of Energy. Demonstration tests using triboelectric charging/electrostatic separation have been successful on a variety of minerals as well as coal. Magnetic separation Developments in magnetic separa¬tion have transpired on a production scale. Superconducting, high gradient magnetic separation has gained accep¬tance with the successful startup of a second unit treating kaolin at J.M. Huber Corp. This liquid-helium-cooled mag¬net generates 2.0 tesla in a 3-m-diam (120-in.-diam) bore with no power con¬sumption. Wet, high-intensity magnetic separation has been applied to sulfide mineral separations both domestically and abroad. These continuous type of separators are effective in removing residual chalcopyrite and sphalerite from other base metal sulfide concentrates. Separators using high energy rare earth permanent magnets are continu¬ally increasing. Now offered as both drum and roll type, these units are be¬coming a staple in the processing of industrial minerals. Tests using rare earth magnets strategically placed on a spiral concentrator have demonstrated the enhanced recovery of heavy miner¬als such as ilmenite. Classification Although no major technology break¬throughs in classification appear immi¬nent, there is an increasing need for more efficient and cost-effective meth¬ods to make size separations. Industrial usage of clays for current and new applications will continue to grow into the next century. The rate of growth will be highest in the less developed areas of the world. Transportation costs are a significant part of the delivered price, so the location of reserves and processing facilities for kaolin, bentonite, and palygorskite (attapulgite) are reviewed relative to serving these emerging markets. New value added applications will increase in the more developed areas which will require high quality raw materials, more sophisticated processing, and rigorous quality control.

Atmospheric conditions underground are constantly changing and from a safety perspective, it is critical to identify when conditions are trending abnormally. Atmospheric monitoring in underground coal mines allows mine operators to analyze atmospheric conditions underground in real-time. Real-time monitoring can then be used to identify whether atmospheric conditions underground have become problematic. The implementation of a risk assessment and management process allows operators to then use a risk-informed decision making to identify comprehensive site specific ventilation parameters. Establishing risk-informed ventilation parameters and tracking conditions relative to these parameters, management can modify ventilation plans as mine conditions develop to manage evolving risks. Ventilation risk assessment and management allows developing atmospheric monitoring technologies to be fully utilized in order to increase safety standards in the United States. This paper reviews general risk assessment approaches, state of the art ventilation based risk assessment, and the risk assessment and management application within the United States regulatory framework.

This report summarizes the results of preliminary mineral-dressing studies by the Bureau of Mines on five samples of copper-bearing ore from various Alaska de-posits. The work on each sample was not extensive enough to warrant individual publication. The results, however, indicate the possibilities and limitations of concentration of the respective ores. The information therefore may be helpful in future development of these ore bodies. Four of the five samples tested were submitted to the laboratory by engineers of the Bureau of Mines as part of the examinations and survey investigations of strategic-mineral deposits in Alaska. This program is conducted to assist development of mineral resources in the Territory and particularly to aid economic exploitation of marginal or complex ores. The fifth sample was submitted by engineers of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.

Experiments on the Rate of Heat Transfer from a Hot Gas' to a Cooler Metallic Surface Members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will be much interested in the subject of teat transfer from a hot gas to a cooler metallic surface, and although the book on this subject recently published by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., of New York, deals primarily with boilers, it contains a great deal of information which metallurgical engineers will find of great value. The book starts out with an introduction giving some of the current theories regarding this subject; it then describes in detail the experimental apparatus used, and the methods of conducting the experiment's and recording the data. Then follow some account of the determination of radiation losses in jackets and cooler; measurement of metal temperatures; detection and correction of errors; etc., concluding with a discussion of the results and derivation of corrective formula for heat absorption; heat pressure rate and specific heat of gas.

Ellsworth Daggett, who joined the Institute in 1873, and had beeu a prominent figure in the mining profession of Utah and other Western states for many years, died in San Francisco, Jan. 5, 1923. Mr. Daggett was a contemporary and intimate friend of Clarence King, James D. Hague, R. W. Raymond, and other Nestors of the mining engineering profession prominent in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. He was born at Canandaigua, N. Y., May 24, 1845; graduated from Sheffield Scientific School in 1864; pursued post-graduate courses there for two years, and for one year at the Bergakademie, in Berlin. He was in active practice as mining engineer from 1866 to 1914, but devoted most of his time during the World War to the perfecting of a submarine torpedo. He was connected with the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel in 1870. The plates illustrating mining industry, Volume III of the reports of that survey, were engraved from drawings obtained in the field during progress of the survey and prepared for the engraver by Mr. Daggett. He operated the Winnamuck mine and smelter at Bingham Cation, Utah, in the early seventies; the mines and mill at Cusihuiriachic, Chihuahua, 18867; and the Berlin mine near Austin, Nevada, 1904-6. On June 24, 1874, Mr. Daggett married Miss June Spencer, of Salt Lake City, who survives him, residing in New Haven, Corn. Appointed United States Surveyor General for Utah by President Harrison, in 1888, he was the first engineer to hold that office in Utah. He reorganized the mineral division of the office, required the courses of mineral surveys to be referred to the true meridian determined by solar or stellar observations, and did much to improve the accuracy and reliability of such surveys. Mr. Daggett was a member of the Alta and University Clubs of Salt Lake City, and president of the latter from 1890 to 1892; he was also a member of the Century Club, New York. Through his instrumentality, irrigation was brought to considerable tracts of land in northeastern Utah, and Daggett County of that state is named for him. Re wrote numerous technical papers, and an economic review entitled "A Quarter of a Century of Prices," in which was shown the close relation

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. Both the foundryman and the theoretical metallurgist are now generally agreed that the anomalous "rising" or "bleeding" of certain ferrous castings of killed metal is primarily attributable to hydrogen. How and why the phenomenon occurs, however, have not been made clear. The following discussion is intended to harmonize foundry experience with metallurgical theory so that the foundryman may possibly improve his ability to prognosticate whether a certain casting may bleed or not. Bleeding, Rising, and Piping The "rising" to be discussed here is not to be confused with the action in rimming ingots as a result of the carbon-oxygen reaction, although a conclusion will be drawn that may apply to the art of controlling the rimming action. Only killed metal is considered, which includes both steels and irons. In Fig. I, three killed, chill-cast ingots are shown: a porous ingot whose evolution of gas during late stages of solidification has ejected metal through the top; an ingot in which moderate gas evolution during solidification has lifted the mushy central metal, i.e., it has "risen"; and, third, a sound ingot with good piping characteristics. The first type is referred to as "bleeding," and generally infers that a solid skin had first formed through which the liquid metal later erupted. There is no fundamental distinc- tion between bleeding and rising in reference to killed metal.* Porosity Hydrogen appears as a cause of bleeding because the gas evolution simultaneously leaves a porosity of a type traceable to hydrogen. Twenty years ago, Melmoth' noted that killed steel that rose unexpectedly in the mold, if returned while liquid to the furnace and heated further under a reducing lime slag, would again rise in the mold; but that if the ingot were allowed to solidify and was then remelted no rising occurred. A critical quantity of the responsible gas is therefore removed by the rising action. Melmoth associated rising with high silicon (0.7 to 0.9 per cent) and concluded that silicon increased gas absorption. Because silicon is a strong deoxidizer, oxygen must, therefore, be eliminated from consideration of the three common gases in steel—oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Butterworth2 later decided that pinhole porosity was caused by gases dissolved in the metal and that hydrogen was obtained from steam in the mold.
