Tantalum capacitors can be found mounted on printed circuit boards of domestic appliances such as personal computers. These capacitors contain a considerable quantity of expensive metal tantalum and can be detached and liberated from printed circuit boards by impact breakers. In this study, the size and density distribution of the liberated electronic devices were investigated. Then, tantalum capacitors were recovered from other electronic devices using size separation and pneumatic gravity concentration methods. More than 70% of Newton's separation efficiency was obtained for tantalum capacitors. High Newton's separation efficiency could be also obtained for other types of electronic devices such as chip resistors.

ABSTRACT: Determining tunnel stability is a key issue during preliminary site investigation. In contrast, problems of excavatability have been largely ignored. While the choice of an economic tunnelling method is admittedly a clear priority in the planning stage, special investigations focus-sing on rock fragmentation (e.g. drilling or cutting performance, rock mass blastability or tool wear) are rarely carried out. This paper explores possibilities to quantify key parameters for rock mass excavatability in drilling, blasting and cutting by TBMs and roadheaders. RÉSUMÉE: La détermination de la stabilité du tunnel est une question clé lors des études prélimi-naires. En revanche, les problèmes d'excavabilité sont souvent en grande partie ignorés. Tandis que le choix d'une méthode de percement économique est évidemment une priorité claire dans l'étape de planification, des investigations spéciales se concentrant sur la fragmentation de la roche (par exemple le comportement de la roche au forage, à l’excavation ou au dynamitage et l’usure des outil) sont rarement effectuées. Cet article explore les possibilités pour quantifier les paramè-tres clé de la roche lors d’excavation par forage, dynamitage, au tunnelier (TBMs) ou à l’excavatrice. Während der Wahl einer wirtschaftlichen Vortriebsmethode während der Planungsphase meist noch eine gewisse Priorität beigemessen wird, werden spezielle Untersuchungen zur Gebirgslösung (Bohr- oder Schneidbarkeit, Sprengbarkeit oder Werkzeugverbrauch) nur sehr selten durchgeführt. Diese Publikation zeigt Möglichkeiten der Quantifizierung von Schlüsselparametern für die Gebirgslösbarkeit auf, also der Bohr- und Sprengbarkeit, der Fräsbarkeit mit Teilschnittmaschinen und der Schneidbarkeit mit TBMs.

For the past three strenuous years you have contributed wholeheartedly to meeting the problems of increased production. You have conducted scientific and technical investigations and research, recommended experiments. and gathered all the available and valuable information possible to gain the desired objectives. You have had many obstacles and difficulties to overcome. In the early days of your organization, there was some lack of co-operation from the industry itself-perhaps, for example, some failure to recognize the mutual advantages of free exchange of experiences and information. But regardless of any hindrances, you have made many and valuable contribution which have tended to make iron and steel manufacture leas of an art and more of a science.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The æslope stability radarÆ (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR can remotely scan a rock slope to continuously measure any movement of the face. The system can detect and alert users of wall movements with submillimetre precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many mines in Australia, Indonesia, Africa, Chile and the United States. Greater than 100 rock falls and waste dump failures (from several tonnes to millions of tonnes) have been monitored, and on every occasion precursor æwarningÆ movements were recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper presents recent case studies of how the SSR technology has provided safety and productivity benefits to large open cut metalliferous mines.

An explosion occurred at Moura No. 4 underground coal mine in Queensland on 16 July 1986 and resulted in the loss of 12 lives. The official report of the accident concluded that the most likely source of ignition was the flame safety lamp. This paper describes an investigation of the behaviour of a flame safety lamp, similar to the one involved in the Moura explosion in atmospheres of methane, coal dust and air, carried out at the Queensland Department of Mines . Testing and Research Station. The behaviour of the lamp is described in conditions of varying methane and coal dust concentrations in air, and varying air velocity. Particular emphasis is given to the 'phenomenon of burning which occurs inside the gauze and which is capable of causing the ignition of an external explosive atmosphere.

This paper covers period from 1973 through to 1988 and the mines of West Coast Mines, Elur Mine, North Mine and Risdon Zinc Smelter, now all part of the Pasminco Group. During this period, optimisation started with one mine (West Coast Mines) producing four Product concentrates with constant steady feed to the smelter and progressed to three mines producing eight products and a smelter varying feed inputs to maximise benefits. The initial optimisation was done manually using a desk top calculator and hand drawn graphs. This ultimately advanced to the use of PC plus linear programming software and spreadsheet generating relevant graphics. The financial benefits were achieved with no capital expenditure and increased from an initial $0.5 to $1.0 M/year (1973 $'s) to $5 to $10 M/year (1988 $'s).

"This study was done from a sample of coal mined at the Vale-Mozambique mine, located in Moatize district, Tete Province. The aim of this work is to analyze the reagent system in the flotation of coal fines belonging to the Upper Chipanga layer (UC). Among coal processing methods, flotation stands out as one of the most important for the concentration of this material, in particular in the treatment of fine particles. The total feed of the Vale-Mozambique processing plant is 8,000 tph of coal, where 10% of this feed corresponds to the fine fraction that feeds the flotation circuit. The material used in this study had a particle size of 96% smaller than 0.25 mm. The reagents used in the flotation tests were betacol and diesel oil as hydrophobizing agents and MIBC as frother. The range of betacol concentrations in the first test phase was 200 g/t to 500 g/t, and in the second phase 200g /t to 500g /t while diesel oil and MIBC were kept constant at 300 g/t. The immediate analysis followed the Brazilian standards NBR 8289, NBR 8293, NBR 8290; and NBR 8299. The results showed that it is possible, from a feed with ash content around 22.84%, to obtain products with levels below of 10% ash, with a mass recovery around 50%. The recovery of carbonaceous matter was also evaluated and presented positive results. Complementing this study, the effect of H2O recovery was evaluated and it was observed that for the concentrations of betacol the recoveries ranged from 6 to 9%, and for diesel oil plus MIBC were 4 to 7%.INTRODUCTION Considering the increase in population and energy consumption as humanity has been living along the last decades and the consequent demand for non-renewable natural resources, it is clear the challenge of the mineral industry in the search for new technologies and improvement of the existing ones. This challenge is justified by the need for better industrial results and to meet the market specifications, taking into account the reduction of deposits with higher contents and the need for beneficiation of more complex ores, lower levels and lower release granulometry. Usually in these situations, processes already well-established as the gravimetric (Sampaio and Tavares, 2005) have not good results."

Two Sun Juan Basin studies were completed through the USGS National Coal Availability program. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field (Fruitland Formation) and in the eastern Standing Rock field (Menefee Formation). In the Bisti and Standing Rock areas, the original coal resource5 are estimated at 4.66 and 3.1 7 Gt (5.14 and 3.49 billion st), respectively. The Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Nu- Zin wilderness area, which contains an estimated 1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st) of coal. Technological restrictions remove 32.5% from Standing Rock's original resource. Available resources are 60%. 2.79 Gt (3.07 billion st), of the Bisti original resource and 65%, 2.07 Gt (2.28 billion st), of the original Standing Rock resource.

Waste rock and tailings from a proposed nickel-copper mine were evaluated extensively for potential on-land and under water disposal. Standard humidity cell and column tests were conducted over a two year period and underwater tests were conducted for more than one year. Nickel concentrations or release rates from the waste were consistent with nickel to sulphur ratios in the solids. This relationship provided a tool to assess the risk of metal leaching in wastes using nickel and sulphide assays. Nickel release and mobilization was found to occur for both oxidizing leach tests and under water tests even when pH values exceeded 7.0. Geochemical model calculations showed that iron oxyhydroxide solids can scavenge nickel from leachate and that the nickel inventory can be released from solids at relatively lower, but neutral pH values.

Foi estudado o comportamento do resultado de dureza com o acréscimo de tempo de patamar de tratamento térmico para alívio de tensões, em juntas soldadas com processos MAG e TIG. Utilizou-se o metal base ASTM A743 CA6NM, um aço inoxidável martensítico usado na fabricação de rotores para geração de energia hidroelétrica, e o consumível de soldagem AWS A5.9 ER410NiMo. No processo MAG, foi usado o gás mistura de 96% Ar + 4% CO2, e no processo TIG o gás 100% Ar. Para cada processo, foi soldado um corpo de prova, que foi cortado em sete fatias ao longo do comprimento. Observou-se redução na dureza do estado “como soldado” para o primeiro ciclo de oito horas de patamar. Nos demais ciclos a variação encontrada não tem significância dentro da dispersão da amostragem.

The Cretaceous limestone wells of the Mara/Maru-caibo Dist. of Venezuela are extremely prolific producers. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, large scale gas-lift operations were commenced involving high production rates on caring Flow. For the design of these gas-lift installations it was essential to have some knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in casing flow, so that the required injection pressures, optimum gas injection raws, etc., could be forecast. This paper presents a method of calculating these annular pressure gradients. Basically the method makes use of an energy balance equation coupled with an empirical energy loss factor derived from field data. The calculations have been put in a form suitable for "punch card-type" calculating machines. A set of gradient curves for Mara/Maracaibo conditions covering flow rates up to 12,000 B/D, and GOR's of 500 to 2,000 cu fd/bbl is presented. From these curves the flowing BHP can be predicted from surface data and the vertical pow performance under varying conditions of gas injection can be estimated. The method has been applied to La Paz and Mam gas-lift operations for over three years and has given consistently accurate results. INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous limestone fields of the Mara/Maracaibo area in Venezuela are characterized by the presence of widely distributed fissure systems. Under these conditions individual wells frequently have extremely high potentials and such wells are generally flowed on the casing-tubing annulus in order to reduce the pressure loss in vertical flow. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, an extensive gas-lift system was planned. As a first approach to this gas-lift design problem, an attempt was made to construct a set of empirical flowing gradient curves from the available subsurface pressure data. Such a method has been used successfully for tubing-flow conditions in California by Gilbert'. Unfortunately, the empirical construction of casing-flow gradient curves presents additional difficulties, as pres- sure bombs cannot bc run in the casing-tubing annulus against high rates of flow. Thus, the Full flowing gradients cannot be defined by actual measurement and the best that can be done is to obtain spot pressures at the tubing shoe. Under these conditions a vast accumulation of BHP data is required to construct a set of gradients. To the La Paz and Mara fields the majority of the available flowing pressure measurements fall into a relatively narrow GOR range, in the neighborhood of the solution ratio. While there appeared to be reasonable prospects of constructing gradient curves for this limited range, measurements at higher GOR's, which were of major interest for gas-lift operations, were relatively few and the prospects of constructing empirical curves cor~spondingly remote. As an alternative approach, the possibilities of a mathematical analysis of vertical flow conditions were investigated. May and Laird2fV n 1934 presented an excellent analysis of the vertical-flow conditions in the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.'s fields. Their analysis was based on an energy-balance equation and calculated the losses due to kinetic energy, friction and slippage separately. By combining these losses with the total calculated available energy, the required depth-pressure traverse could be deduced. On applying the method to La Paz conditions, good results were obtained for tubing flow at high tubing-head pressures. However, for lower wellhead pressures (300 psi and under) the discrepancy between calculated and measured values increased appreciably. It was considered that this was probably due to energy losses caused by slippage or liquid hang-up in a continuous gas phase, for which it was difficult to visualize any analytical approach. In 1952 Poettmann and Carpenter4 presented a method of pressure gradient calculation which, while based on an energy-balance equation similar to that employed by May and Laird, made no attempt to evaluate the various components making up the total energy loss resulting from irreversibilities of flowing fluids. Instead, they proposed a method of analysis which assumed that all significant losses for multiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional losses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. Many factors enter into the efficient operation of the reciprocating type of gravity concentrator. Earlier investigators who studied these factor invariably used natural (crushed ore) products for their experiments, but in the present study synthetic products were used. The variables considered were (1) specific gravity of the sand grains, (2) size of sand drains, and (3) shape of sand grains comprising the table feeds. It is recognized, also, that the percentage relationship of the different kinds of grains is a factor affecting results. This factor is variable in one group of experiments but is thereafter kept constant.

Some recent experiments in the use of compressed air for rock drills at higher than usual pressures, up to 150 lb. per sq. in., emphasize the importance of maintaining the compressed-air system in the best condition if the greatest possible over-all efficiency is to be secured. No claim of high over-all efficiency can be made for the compressed-air system of braking that is used on railroad trains, yet the air brake works effectively. Compressed air is not used efficiently in the rock drill, but no other type of machine drilling is yet a serious competitor of the air-driven rock drill.

Timber has been used as pile support for structures for 6,000 years. Some means of preservation of wood go back almost that far. Timber piles support all types of structures ? some are buried below the water table; others raise a home for protection from animals or a chief's home for prestige. Millions of wood piles have been driven for bridge support. Earlier piles were driven by hand then by ingeniously raised weights. Charring, animal fats and oils have been used for preservation. Coal tar creosote and other preservative methods started only in the early 1800's and give effective protection.

A chemical method of analysis for beryllium was developed recently in Bureau of Mines laboratories. In this method, quinalizarin (1-2-5-8 tetrahydroxyanthraquinone) in N/4 NaOH is used as a colorimetric titration reagent. This solution has a reddish-purple color, whereas the solution containing equivalent amounts of beryllium and the dye is rather blue. In the titration procedure, standard quinalizarin solution is added to the unknown beryllium sample and to two standard beryllium samples of different but known concentrations. Then adjustments in concentrations of BeO in the two known and of quinalizarin in all three are made until the red-violet shade of the unknown is halfway between that of the two knowns. The amount of BeO in the unknown is calculated from the known BeO content of the solutions between which it lies. It is extremely difficult to distinguish the slight differences in shade of these solutions without the use of a proper light filter, especially when the concentration is over 0.1 mg. of BeO, so a study was made of the transmission characteristics of quinalizarin in N/4 NaOH and of the corresponding beryllium complex to determine what filter would give the most contrast.

"A new raw water intake from the South Holston River to the Kingsport water treatment plant is under construction. The exploration for the 335 meter long horseshoe shaped tunnel design took advantage of the site topography along the alignment to better define the complex geology consisting of Knox Limestone and Sevier Shale formations separated by a fault zone. To assess the geological conditions and to determine the extent of the fault zone, a 183 meter long horizontal boring and geophysical investigation was performed along a portion of the tunnel’s horizontal alignment. Explorations defined the fault zone width at approximately 5 meters and packer testing along the alignment provided a means of estimating groundwater inflows. As the tunnel excavation advances, comparisons of exploratory data versus encountered conditions will be made. This paper provides details on the geotechnical investigation, lessons learned, and the influence of the geology on the tunnel design. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Kingsport WTP is supplied with raw water via the South Holston River. The City of Kingsport (City) owns and operates the Kingsport Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The existing raw water intake system, consisting of pumps, power supply, raw water piping and appurtenant facilities has been determined to be vulnerable to failure. The original Raw Water Pump Station (RWPS) was constructed in 1928 as part of the original Kingsport WTP project. The 1928 RWPS operated until 1970 when it was replaced by the existing RWPS. This existing system still utilizes the 1928 piping and piping tunnel. Improvements to the RWPS hydraulics and capacity are required to meet the City’s future water treatment needs. The system extracts water from the South Fork of the Holsten River and coveys it via three pressure pipelines to the WTP. The conveyance piping exits the RWPS, ascends approximately 23 m up a near vertical rock outcropping then enters a 120 m long tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel the piping continues underground to the WTP. The drill and blast tunnel is horseshoe shaped and nominally 3.3 m high by 3.3 m wide. The easternmost 62.3 m of the tunnel is without any type of support. The remainder is lined with concrete. According to the City of Kingsport, the concrete lining was installed in the 1970’s as part of upgrades to the facility. An evaluation of the current facilities concluded that the conveyance piping was in poor condition and required replacement."

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

The effective utilization of resources and process optimization play a crucial role in the sustaining and growth of overall businesses. This principle holds true in the mining sector, where particular attention is required during the comminution steps. This necessity arises from the fact that mining operations often consume substantial amounts of energy in mineral processing. Therefore, it becomes imperative to thoroughly study the integration of comminution steps. In many instances, an approach to be studied is the operation commencing with the drill and blast phase and culminating in the grinding product process. Nevertheless, establishing an optimal integration between drill and blast operations and the grinding phase is a complex undertaking due to the direct influence of rock characteristics on this process. And in many cases, the complexity and variability of such physical characteristics makes mining operations to ignore such influence. Consequently, Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS), in collaboration with Lundin Mining's Chapada Mine engineering team, and with the assistance of Hatch Consulting and Technology, has undertaken a comprehensive study aimed at enhancing mill throughput at the Chapada operation. The basis of this study lies in characterizing the rock masses present in the Chapada Mine to gain a deep understanding of the material that needs to be comminuted. Subsequently, the mineral processing team determined the most suitable size distribution for the Run-of-Mine (ROM) material. With this information, the drilling and blasting team built a site-specific blast fragmentation model, able to simulate various blast design scenarios. This approach enabled to optimize the utilization of available drilling and blasting resources while striving to achieve the optimum ROM characteristics. Since 2021, the Mine to Mill methodology has been progressively implemented at the Chapada Mine. As a result, the blasting engineering team now utilizes the blast plans generated by the fragmentation model simulations as a foundation for designing blast plans that align with the operational and financial capacities of the mine. Overall, it was predicted that this implementation could lead to an average increase in mill throughput of 13-22 % depending on blend feed, once all recommendations are implemented. Even with partial implementation, plant results demonstrate a 5 % increase compared to the period before the Mineto-Mill project, without any coarsening of the associated grinding product size.
