Bauxite residue known as red mud (RM) is a by-product produced in massive quantities during alumina production by the Bayer process with a utilisation rate of less than 5%. A large amount of RM accumulated and produced continuously has had a seriously adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment. The application of RM in building materials is considered to be the most effective and thorough way to make RM harmless and recycle resources for the reason that adding RM to concrete as a mineral admixture could not only consume a lot of RM, but also save cement and other energy-consuming industrial products. In this paper, the adaptability to cement and aggregate of RM was studied. The results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete using ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement or fly ash Portland cement as cementing material showed different trends with the increase of the amount of RM. The influence rules of RM on the compressive strength of Portland cement, slag Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement concrete were similar, whether for silicate aggregate or carbonate aggregate. RM has a negative correlation to the flexural strength of silicate aggregate-ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a positive correlation to silicate aggregate-slag Portland cement, silicate aggregate-fly ash Portland Cement. RM promoted the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and inhibited the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide crystals in the matrix while ordinary Portland cement, Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement were used as cementing materials. This study provided support for the use of RM in concrete, the reduction of solid waste storage, and the saving of high energy consumption cement as well. The objective of this condensed handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. It will be carried with the inspectors during their surveys. The complete handbook should be left in their offices except for Appendix II which lists the compositions of products found in previous surveys. There are several portions of the condensed handbook which should prove most useful to the inspectors. THE amount or value of the precious metals consumed in dentistry is probably amazing to most people. It falls very little short of that which is consumed in jewelry. Inasmuch as the ultimate destination is in the human mouth, dental alloys enjoy some importance because life and health depend upon restorations made with them. Prosthetic dentistry has made wonderful progress in the last few years. The manufacturers who supply the metals also deserve commendation. This industry which deals with metals to go-into people's mouths is comparatively new. There is no literature on the subject, and little or no precedent by which to be guided. It was only by close cooperation with the dentist or prosthetic technician that desirable physical properties were produced, as-nearly as possible, in the metals which were available and permissible. It is true that there were and still are conflicting opinions among the dentists as to the physical properties they require. Sometimes they request the impossible, such as alloys which are exceedingly stiff and springy, yet will bend or adjust easily. Even in this latter instance, progress has been made by supplying methods of heat-treatment whereby metals may be softened or hardened at will. (Figs. 1 and 2.) The demands made upon manufacturers are extremely varied. They must supply metals of tensile strengths ranging from approximately 30,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. and over. The latter metals must be workable and in many instances capable of extreme deformation. They must not be affected by mouth conditions, nor should they oxidize greatly when molten, at red heat, or during a soldering operation. In addition to physical, specifications, color demands must also be met. The firm of which I have the most, knowledge manufacturers 11,553 standard stock articles of precious metals, taking into consideration formulas, finenesses, grades, colors, gages, lengths, sizes and weights. If special demands are taken into consideration, the number would be in excess of 25,000. Wrought metals are manufactured in a great many alloys of different sizes and shapes, such as plate, bar, rod, wire, sheet, strip, mesh and foil. There are also other products of importance.

M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Mark Twain once observed that "Everyone complains about the weather but nobody does anything about it." Not too long ago, the same observation held true for the problem of air pollution. During the past 25 years, however, the mounting concern over air pollution has spurred industrial and governmental research to find ways and means to combat the menacing situation. But for all the time and money spent in recent years to fight it, air pollution is still a major problem in most industrialized communities in America. At the SME Fall Meeting last September, coal's responsibility for such pollution was aired at an informative panel discussion moderated by Ernst Hall. The many-sided problem of air pollution became readily apparent as five experts, representing industry and government, parlayed over the task of cleaning up dirty air. Their opening comments are reprinted here.

Situated 45 miles west of Philadelphia and 50 miles southwest of Bethlehem Steel Company's Bethlehem plant, the integrated Grace mine facilities produce 4000 tpd of high-quality iron ore pellets. Startup of the Grace mill was in November 1958, and iron concentrates were shipped until March 1960, when the pellet plant went into operation. The underground mine, when fully developed, will hoist about 9000 tpd, including development rock. The crude ore, which has an iron content of approximately 42%, is magnetically cobbed and crushed in closed circuit with 3/4-in. slotted vibrating screens. The ore is washed and screened in the mill and the plus 1/4 in. screen product is again cobbed prior to feeding to the rod mills. Grinding is done in rod mills, and in ball mills that are in closed circuit with 30 in, cyclones, to 1% on 100 mesh and 65% minus 325 mesh. The ground ore is magnetically concentrated by three-drum permanent type finisher magnets to 67% Fe. The magnetite concentrate is pumped from the mill to a 50 ft thickener in the pellet plant. The thickened magnetite concentrate is relayed to the filters through a two-stage pump arrangement. The filter cake is fed by belt from filter concentrate bins to mixer-muller belts where it is intimately mixed with bentonite and a slight amount of water for moisture control. The fluffed concentrate then drops into balling cones. The green pellets from the balling cones are fed in a prescribed feed pattern to shaft furnaces through the use of shuttle car mechanisms. The green pellets are dried, heated to 2500°F and cooled to 1200°F as they descend through the furnace and into pellet coolers where the pellets are further reduced in temperature to 250°F. Heat is recovered in the cooling process through the use of air-to-air heat exchangers. The cooled pellets discharge on a rubber conveyor belt and are transferred to 6000-ton pellet railroad loading bin. The final pellet product consists of 90% plus 1/4 in. material (after tumble testing1) and contains 66% Fe plus 3% silica.

"Shallow-depth (<200m) high temperature submarine hydrothermal systems are not commonly observed on mid-ocean ridge settings, as most known systems are located within arc - island-arc volcanic settings, often proximal to coastal areas (meteoric waters added). In 2013, during the Centre for Geobiology’s 2013 oceanographic cruise (R/V G.O. Sars), a dredge successfully sampled massive sulfides and hydrothermally altered rocks from the top of a volcanic edifice (~144-284 m depth) located on the northern sector of the Kolbeinsey Ridge. Dredged samples include vesicular altered basalts, and matrix supported anhydrite, barite and barite-pyrite-anhydrite volcaniclastic breccias. Sulfidesulfate breccias depict complex zoning where numerous small vent orifices are distributed with large blades of marcasite that appear intergrown with barite. Native sulfur was observed in one of these small vent orifices. On a microscopic scale, numerous spherical silica-rich structures appear associated to these breccias. These rocks are evidence for the presence of a relatively high temperature (minimum 150ºC) shallow-water seafloor hydrothermal system in the Arctic mid-ocean ridge, far from mainland influence. This new discovery presents a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of fluid chemistry, metal mobility and precipitation in shallow hydrothermal systems. The remote location of this system dictates that fluid recharge will be influenced solely by seawater and magmatic fluids, In July-August 2014 we expect to survey this new field and acquire new and comprehensive data."

THE past year has witnessed no radical changes in methods for the reduction and refining of copper. The Carson litigation was finally brought to a close ant1 the copper smelter is again free to introduce charge into his reverberatory furnaces in whatever manner suits him best. This litigation naturally led to much experimentation with various methods of charging and with various types of bath. In some cases the charge was introduced more or less centrally on a relatively dry hearth and in other cases into a bath of greater or less depth. The results of these furnaces were meticulously compared with the results obtained in side-charger furnaces, and it was apparent that it made little, if any difference how a given furnace \\.as charged so long as care was taken that there was always something in the furnace for the flames to work on. So long as this requirement was complied with, consumption of fuel per ton of charge smelted and tonnage smelted per furnace day remained substantially the same regardless of the method of charging or the depth of bath employed. In some instances the center-charged deep-bath furnaces gave slightly better results than the side-charged particularly with respect to copper losses. The slags of the deep-bath furnaces are generally a little cleaner

This involves scheduling which quarry ledges should be mined and when in order to minimize unnecessary inventory buildup. Challenges associated with ILCI’s operation are discussed and summarized in the closing of this paper.

This Bureau of Mines study describes the preparation of sulfur compound concentrates boiling from 225° to 400° C, and reports the sulfur types detected in these concentrates by low-voltage mass spectrometry (LVMS). Existing LVMS methods were extended; the procedures described should be generally applicable to high-boiling petroleum distillates and concentrates as a preliminary means of narrowing the number of factions to be considered for more detailed separation and identification studies. The following major sulfur compound constituents of petroleum are indicated by the data: benzothiophenes, dibenzothiophenes, naphthanothiophenes, naphthenobenzothiophenes, and homologs and isomers of these. Cyclic and chain sulfides comprise a significant portion of the gas-oil range sulfur compound types. The presence of some classes of sulfur compounds containing two sulfur atoms per molecule was indicated.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

"In order to reach the goal of optimal and safe extraction of the mineral reserve, the mining industry is increasingly focusing on reconciliation across the mining value chain to ensure that the mining process occurs in a progressively more predictable manner. This will consequently improve the understanding of mine plans and their associated implementation risks, ultimately leading to increased investor confidence. In terms of geotechnical engineering, mine to design performance assessment is a critical aspect of mine to plan adherence focusing on the complex aspects influencing slope performance. A mine to design reconciliation process therefore needs to systematically track implementation and geotechnical aspects in order to review or update slope design criteria and pit layouts according to the mine planning cycle as the mine is developed. This paper describes the development and implementation of a standardized mine to design reconciliation system for operations utilizing laser scanning technology, analysis tools, as well as associated key performance indicators. Performance is evaluated on final pit boundaries in terms of geometry achieved as well as blast performance evaluation of face conditions. These aspects as well as the resulting catch berm capacity should be captured in an information system, enabling longer term trend analysis and detailed root cause analysis where unsatisfactory outcomes occur. Adverse outcomes should subsequently be incorporated into the mine’s risk management process informing risk mitigation measures including blast design adjustments, slope design changes, or rockfall protection measures. Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) can be specifically tailored for use by the commercial explosives industry to calculate risk to employees and the public from commercial explosives facilities and operations. This methodology has several advantages over the American Table of Distances (ATD) which is solely a Quantity Distance (Q/D) analysis. While the ATD has remained essentially the same for 100 years, the safety of commercial explosives in storage has increased immensely. However, the concepts behind QRA calculations are not as intuitive and even at the end of the calculations the values of risk must be compared to something. A few regimes for assessing an acceptable level of risk are discussed in this paper. Risk levels for various United States Federal entities and international agencies are highlighted and suggestions for acceptable risk criteria for individuals and groups are provided. Referencing risk levels from normal daily activities is also done in this paper to make relative the accepted risk criteria. This paper presents some relevant individual risks for everyday activities and some scenarios for group risk for comparison. Individual risk is a straightforward concept however group risk is more complicated. This paper aims to clarify these concepts and provide means to communicate them to the public.

"Through the years, a wide variety of dust control methods have been utilized at mineral processing operations. While some have been successful, many have been highly ineffective. Dust Control systems currently in use include baghouse systems, fog systems, surfactant spray systems, and foam dust suppression. While baghouse systems can be effective, they are capitalintensive and costly to operate and maintain. Chemical dust control programs can be very effective. However, if applied incorrectly, they can have detrimental effect on mineral recovery. Thus, many operations utilize a combination of baghouses and water, often with limited success.Recent advancements in surfactant and polymer chemistry have resulted in substantially improved chemical dust suppression programs. These products range from non-corrosive surfactant/humectant combinations for road dust control to foam-based systems for crushers and transfer points, to advanced polymers for pile binding and soil stabilization. These advances are discussed in detail, citing results from fieldwork in the precious and base metals industries.INTRODUCTIONThe global nature of the mineral processing industry presents a unique set of challenges. Traditional thinking would tell us what works in one place should work in another. This could not be further from the truth in the area of dust control. We learn very quickly that there are a number of factors that can affect the efficiency and success of a dust control program and that these factors are not all chemical or equipment related. Some of these factors include facility maintenance, product selection, water quality and characteristics, and economic considerations.What has been learned from past experience is that each mineral processing plant presents a unique set of factors that will affect the ability to create an optimal dust control program. This paper presents a myriad of treatment options that will highlight the advancements in chemical dust suppression products and equipment."

A method by which it is possible at an oxidation potential below 680 mV SHE to achieve quantitative conversion of sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur instead of sulphate in a biological leach of chalcopyrite and bornite has been investigated. The process chemistry, biological phenomena and process flowsheet options are discussed. Several copper concentrates have been evaluated and have been found to be amenable to th process. Results to study the progression of chalcopyrite decomposition during the leach are presented and mineralogical factors affecting the requirement for silver addition are discussed. A chloride addition method for improving silver recovery is described. The results of a small scale continuous leach test have demonstrated that continuous operation can be carried out with high copper extraction and stoichiometric conversion of sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur.

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain&apos;s Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have &apos;been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain&apos;s Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain&apos;s Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot&apos;s Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating&apos;s Section to the south. The Keating&apos;s Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as&apos; to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the &apos;east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. Hatch’s Mine to Process Optimization projects integrate mining and processing strategies, minimizing operating costs and maximizing overall profit. The methodology involves ore characterization, blast audits, plant surveys, analysis of historical data, and integrated modelling and simulation of mining and processing. Blast designs are tailored according to ore type and the downstream process is optimized for the changed feed. This approach has increased throughput and minimized costs for many operations worldwide. The implementation of this methodology at an iron ore operation that faced challenges with increasing mining strip ratio and ore body mineralogy changes is presented in this paper. The larger stripping ratio increased mining costs and constrained the run-of-mine (ROM) delivery to the process plant. Process performance was affected as the ore mineralogy shifted from predominantly hematite to include greater proportions of magnetite. The project objective was to minimize overall cost per ton mined and processed and maximize profit. Tailoring the blast designs according to ore type and process optimization increased the throughput of all process lines. This provided the potential to shut down one of the five processing line, aligning the mine and plant capacity and significantly reducing the processing costs.

"A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation.Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression.The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be Possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficiaL."
