This report documents, from concept through field testing, the pan scraper Wheel Slip Monitor. The function of this device is to instantly warn the scraper operator of wheel slip and thus enable him to take immediate corrective action. Knowledgeable pan scraper people recognize that the preponderance of scraper tire damage and wear occurs during useless wheel slip when the scraper operator attempts to increase machine draft beyond what traction will allow. The resultant shortened tire life has become very expensive. The Wheel Slip Monitor reported here provides the means for relieving the scraper operator of attempting to judge wheel slip on tires he cannot see. Direct and intuitively understandable audible and flashing light warnings tell the scraper operator which wheel is slipping and also indicate the relative magnitude of the slip. Beside the Wheel Slip Monitor's patent utility as a real time operator aid, it has unique potential for application to extended term wheel slip history acquisition under field conditions. This information has never been easily available and it promises practical value in pan scraper management.

"Subsidence prediction due to ore extraction and backfilling during open stoping operations for an underground iron mine in China is reported in this paper. Geologic complexities including faults and interfaces between different lithologies, and the stoping and backfilling sequence adopted from the mine plans are incorporated in building a 3-D discontinuum numerical model. The stoping was simulated in two vertically stacked horizontal layers (Fig. 6), with a total of 16 stopes. Large displacements of up to 50 cm were predicted by the model along the roof of the stopes, and a maximum surface subsidence of 22.5 cm was predicted by the model . Backfilling was found to control subsequent deformation and subsidence. The extraction of the upper orebody led to relatively higher deformations in extracting the lower orebody. Finally, the predicted subsidences at all locations along a subsidence profile on the surface are shown. INTRODUCTIONThe Luohe iron (pyrite) mine, located in Hefei city, Anhui, is an underground mine in China, being mined through the open stoping and backfilling method. The orebody lies at a depth of about 400 m and has an average thickness of 250 m (Magang Steel Company, 2012a). Discovered in the 1960s, the location has a reserve estimate of 300 million tonnes, which have been mined since 2007. The orebody has been divided by the mining company into an east and a west section to facilitate planning for ore extraction.Figure 1 shows the surface above the underground mine, which is seen to contain many human settlements including villages, pastures and other infrastructure. These locations are sensitive in that they need to be protected from potential adversities due to the underground mining, such as surface subsidence. While it may be near impossible to completely eliminate the subsidence due to ore extraction, operations such as backfilling have been adopted by the mine in an effort to substantially reduce it. Hence, this paper focuses on describing the stability of stopes in the mine and estimates future subsidence in a part of the mining region through numerical modeling."

Within the flotation community a belief has developed that some particle shapes are more ?floatable? than others. This is usually attributed to an influence of particle shape or roughness on the induction period required to achieve attachment between the particles and the air bubbles in the pulp. Up to now, such measurements have not been able to readily isolate the effect on individual flotation subprocesses. In contrast, our experimental apparatus, the CSIRO Milli-Timer, enables us to directly observe the process of particle?bubble interaction and attachment by means of a high-speed video recording, thus providing a direct measure of the induction period for attachment. To assess the influence of particle shape on induction time we used two varieties of methylated borosilicate glass particles ? spheres and angular ?frit? ? in a range of tightly-sized fractions. In doing this, we take care to account for the influence of other factors that could affect the induction time, such as the polar angle of sliding commencement, and approach velocity. These parameters are recorded as variables for each interaction, and corrected for using multiple nonlinear regression. Our results illustrate the importance of particle shape on induction period, with angular particles exhibiting induction periods that were an order of magnitude lower than those of spheres. Furthermore, the induction period was seen to decrease with increasing particle velocity, or kinetic energy on approach, but increased as the trajectory approached the limit of just grazing the bubble. Particle shape in mineral processing is a consequence chiefly of the mineral type and the type of grinding employed. The results presented herein indicate that attention should be paid to the shape of particles obtained from the grinding operation, besides particle size. INTRODUCTION Theodore Roosevelt Dam is a cyclopean-masonry, gravity-arch dam located on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. Construction of the dam began in 1903 and was completed in 1911. The dam is about 85 m high with a total reservoir capacity of about 1.7x109 m3. Raising the dam is now being considered to provide additional water storage and flood control. This paper describes preliminary analyses performed to assess foundation stability for increased loading resulting from raising the dam and reservoir water surface about 12 m. The foundation of Theodore Roosevelt Dam consists of variably metamorphosed limes tones, sands tones, mudstones, and shales. Bedding uniformly strikes nearly normal to the river (N 40º W) and dips upstream at 25 to 30º. The rock is cut by four prominent joint sets as indicated by the joint contour diagram shown in figure 1A. The diagram was developed from surf ace observations and vertical drill core oriented relative to the bedding. Sampling biases account for the differences in concentrations of various joint sets. However, field observations indicate that all sets are relatively prominent, planar, and continuous. SEEPAGE ANALYSES Consistent with practice at the time of construction, no foundation drainage was installed at Theodore Roosevelt Dam. Finite element seepage analyses were therefore performed to study the potential for large uplift pressures in the foundation. The dam has steep abutments and is curved in plan as shown in figure 1B. "The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

As a discipline, geophysics covers an enormous range of scales and applications - from planetary geophysics through to the monitoring of acoustic emissions of rock samples. Although it is not a core discipline within the mining industry, geophysics has a useful role in providing information on the nature of the rock mass and the way it is responding to the mining process. For coal mining purposes, geophysical studies mainly seek to - delineate boundaries between the coal and the various layers within the surrounding strata - determine the physical properties of the rocks in-si tu, and - monitor the response of the rocks to the mining process Some of these applications may be associated primarily with mine planning, but once a mine is underway, most geophysical results can be used for the purposes of ground control. For example, insights into the nature of a geological fault mapped by a 3D seismic reflection survey will be relevant to determining support requirements while mining through it. In some instances there are parallels in the use of geophysics by the petroleum industry. Seismic reflection and wireline logging techniques have mainly been developed for petroleum exploration where their on-going development continues to provide spin-offs for the coal industry. The 3D seismic survey techniques that we now routinely employ were in their infancy 25 years ago and, almost certainly, the high quality borehole scanning tools that are now available would not have been developed without the need for petroleum well evaluation. Mining has also led to the development of specific techniques. An example is microseismic monitoring for the management of roof conditions during longwalling, and also the prediction of rock and coal bursts. The use and success of this technique have grown greatly over recent years. Another example lies with the use of geophysical wireline logs to predict rock strength and in rock mass classification. Coal seams also provide an unusual geophysical situation in that they form seismic and electromagnetic waveguides. The in-seam seismic and radio imaging methods have been developed to exploit these geological properties. In this paper I address the development and application of geophysical methods such as these with a particular emphasis on their role in ground control. We will see that there have been many developments over the past 25 years but we should also think about the future and how geophysics needs to be developed. From a miner?s perspective, one obvious area of need is in the detection of voids in the vicinity of current mine workings, be they old workings or karsts within nearby carbonate beds.

Introduction Methane is contained under pressure within the fractures and adsorbed on the surface of the coal seams and adjacent strata. It is released into the mine atmosphere during mining of the seam creating explosive gas-air mixtures. Large volumes of air, sometimes as high as 20 tons of air for each ton of coal mined, are circulated constantly to dilute and carry away methane from coal mines. Removal of methane from solid coal, wherever high methane emissions occur, has been discussed by Spindler and Poundstone (1960) and Thakur and Davis (1977). Methane control in longwall gobs is much more complicated. As longwall mining progresses, the overburden continually subsides, and the immediate roof caves behind the roof supports. Even the underlying strata heave and open up communication channels feeding gas to the longwall gobs. The pressure of gas in the underlying and overlying strata is usually higher than the ambient air pressure in the mine. Thus the mine workings become natural pressure sinks, into which gas flows from the entire disturbed zone. Winter (1975) defines this zone as the "gas emission space". Depending on the number of gas-bearing zones in the gas emission space and their gas contents, the total methane emission from longwall gobs could vary from a few to more than one hundred cubic meters of gas per ton of mined coal. Hence the ventilation of longwall faces demands a large quantity of air. This ventilation need is further enhanced by high air losses specially on caving faces (with no stowing of the gobs). The old system of longwall ventilation, the 'U' pattern, where all the air was brought down one gate road and exited through the other gate road, loses large quantities of air through gobs giving a high methane concentration at the return end of the face. The 'Y' ventilation pattern where intake air is brought down both head and tail gate roads relieves the situation to some extent but, on most longwalls, some kind of methane control is still needed. With the onset of longwall mining in Europe several decades ago, the initial work on methane control on longwall has naturally been done there. The basic principle of methane control has always been, and still remains, some means of "bypassing methane from the gas emission space without letting it mix with the mine air". In most cases the bypassing mechanism is either a strategically located borehole or a roadway. A successful methane control program depends on the following basic premises: a. Determination of the geometry of the gas emission space and location of gas bearing horizons therein. b. Estimation of the rate of methane influx into the longwall gob. c. A scheme to bypass the gas in the most economic and efficient manner and thus prevent it from entering the mine atmosphere. In successful methane drainage programs a high proportion, usually between 50 and 70 percent, of the total gas emissions in a working district is removed before it can enter the mine airways. Advantages of methane drainage can be summarized as: 1. Generally reduced methane levels in the mine leading to increased safety and productivity. 2. Reduced air requirements and corresponding savings in ventilation horsepower. 3. Faster rate of advance for development headings and economy in the size of headings. 4. Possible use of mine gas as an additional source of fuel. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the geometry of gas emission space and methane influx therein and discuss more successful European and U.S. longwall gob gas control techniques.

"The Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline tunnel project is the largest (7.8 km) and the deepest (90 m) subsea tunnel in South Korea. This tunnel will house a pipeline to carry natural gas from the mainland to Geoje Island southeast of the country to alleviate the increased demands for natural gas, especially in the winter season. Tunneling is currently underway using two slurry shield TBMs of 3.5 m diameter. This paper describes the major design elements of the tunneling machines and their performance evaluation. For this purpose, a thorough analysis of geotechnical information was performed to evaluate the tunnel elevation to reduce the risk of tunneling under high water pressure in unstable and permeable rock mass under 9 bar water pressure. TBM specification and TBM performance were also analyzed using different methods, including well-known models as well as a rotary cutting machine test developed in house in Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. INTRODUCTION High demand for natural gas, especially in winter season was the primary driving factor for the design of the Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline project. This project is located southeast of South Korea between Jinhae district and Geoje Island and runs for over 50 km length. The mid part of this project includes a 3.5 m diameter subsea tunnel consisting of two sections of Geoje to Jiri Island (4.3 km) and Jinhae to Jiri Island (3.5 km). Figure 1 shows the tunnel project location and its layout. Figure 2 shows the geological profile along the tunnel. As can be seen, the tunnel passes mainly through three rock types: granite, tuff breccia, and andesite tuff. This tunnel was planned to be constructed by two face pressurized shielded TBMs and to be lined with a segmental lining of 2.8 m internal diameter. The major challenge for this tunnel is its maximum expected water pressure at the tunnel invert (8.83 bar). At such a high water pressure, the TBMs required special design to ensure they can handle unexpected water pressure and to ensure the risks for the TBM maintenance intervention are minimal. In this regard, a thorough analysis was conducted on the TBM design parameters and geotechnical information to define required TBMs’ design parameters and to identify the safest tunnel elevation. This paper provides a brief overview of the project geotechnical information, TBM selection and its design specification, tunnel elevation selection, and TBM penetration rate evaluation. In this regard, a rotary cutting machine testing equipment was used to perform trial tests on a similar rock type encountered along the tunnel for performance evaluation and optimization."

In choosing the subject for my address to you this evening I was actuated by the knowledge that in the past Australian metallurgical problems have been solved by the introduction of extremely interesting processes. Frequently such processes originated in this country, or at least were first adopted here on a large scale.Chronologically there comes to mind the application of chlorination to the Mount Morgan ores from 1888 onwards.Then the application of pyritic smelting to the Mount Lyell ore body in 1896, followed closely by the successful flotation of zinc blendÇ! at Broken Hill, about 1900, and the treatment of the refractory Kalgoorlie gold ores by roasting and cyaniding. With the development of the differential flotation process at Broken Hill came the production of a slime lead concentrate carrying zinc which necessitated the use of a high zinc slag in the lead smelting process. Although previously considered impossible, the necessarytechnique was successfully evolved at Port Pirie resulting in the accumulation of large tonnages of zinc-bearing slag as potential sources of that metal. The past twenty years have witnessed:-(a) The establishment of a flourishing iron and steel industry, with its attendant coking and by-product plant at two centres in New South Wales, namely, Newcastle and Port Kembla.(b) The establishment of an electrolytic zinc process at Risdon in Tasmania.*Presidential Address, Melbourne, 20th August, 1936.

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. No new goldfields have been found in the Witwatersrand Basin for over 60 years, and one consequence of this is a long-term decline in gold production. Exploration throughout this period has been based on the placer model that infers alluvial transport of gold grains and then sedimentary sorting in the basin; however, there is no viable source for so much alluvial gold and no single sedimentary setting that hosts the gold.An alternative genetic model can now provide a quantified explanation for the source of the gold, and it does not rely on alluvial gold processes. The hydrothermal model can easily explain the source of the Witwatersrand gold as being derived from the background gold at parts per billion (ppb) level throughout the Kaapvaal craton of South Africa. This gold is involved in metamorphic processes, available for solution in metamorphic fluids, and hence may be transported whilst dissolved in fluid into the Witwatersrand Basin. The hydrothermal model warrants consideration as it can explain the source of gold, the large alteration halo in the goldfields, the mineralogy, and especially the gold-carbon association.Working on the premise that if one model (placer) is not giving the desired results (discovery of new goldfields), then it may be prudent to consider alternatives. Application of a hydrothermal model to guide exploration would place importance on large and small early structures in and around the Witwatersrand Basin; it would also emphasise the geochemical nature of potential host rocks (especially C and Fe) rather than their sedimentary origin.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. "Soil mixed seepage cutoff walls are increasingly being used in levee and dam modification projects nationwide. An important aspect of their overall quality depends greatly on the language included in the specifications. Depending on the method (e.g. vertical axis auger mixing, cutter soil mixing, or trench mixing techniques) the specifications are a blend of prescriptive and performance based contract language with differences in element construction, element connections, quality control/quality assurance, and work area restrictions. Many of the existing specifications were initially developed by contractors in whole or in part, and can contain restrictive provisions favoring the authoring contractor. In response to these challenges, basic soil mixing fundamentals were revisited and recent lessons learned incorporated, resulting in the development of a new specification for soil mixed seepage cutoff walls that provides adaptability for the various construction methods. The new specification addresses quality control, quality assurance, equipment independence (elimination of restrictive contract language), rig instrumentation.INTRODUCTIONSoil mixing has been used in the construction of seepage barriers for over 30 years. Most soil mixed project primarily use the wet-rotary-shaft, wet-rotary-end or wet-vertical panel methods (reference FHWA Deem Mixing Manual Figure 137). One of the first major soil mixing seepage barriers was constructed in the Jackson Dam in Wyoming. Since then the use of soil mixing for seepage barriers has increased significantly and this specialized domain of construction which was solely procured by RFP methods, is now increasingly being specified in projects issued for bid. The Bid documents require more careful specification writing than RFP methods because the RFP methods allowed detailed proposals by the contractor. Therefore the development of soil mixing specifications began with contractors preparing the specifications. This paper addressed some of these issues, and proposes methods to address these resulting concerns. The resolution of these issues considers several aspects: 1) Assessment of binder injection, 2) Evaluation of mixing index, and 3) Verification testing."

During the last 100 years, the submerged arc furnace has been one of the most amazing diversified melting units. These furnaces have found their application in more than 20 different main industrial areas such as iron, ferro alloy, chemical industry, lead, zinc, copper, refractory, titanium oxide, recycling, phosphorus etc. Such an evolution was only possible because of tremendous efforts in research and development and due to the large range of design solutions. The worldwide strong competition also forced the industry and plant suppliers to develop highly efficient, economically balanced units in optimized sizes and with long lifetimes, to adapt to the market conditions. Regarding the environment, the plants improved significantly in terms of water treatment plants and off-gas treatments as well as on site recycling units. This paper will give a short overview regarding the history of the furnace and the latest developments in today?s main application fields: ferro alloys, non-ferrous, special application and recycling. In addition new activities in research and developments are briefly discussed.

"The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet. Given the limited number of new plant construction, focus is turning to the optimization of existing metallurgical roasting plants. To meet the goals of high process efficiency with limited capital expenditure, plant owners are looking for new strategies, including digitization and expert support. As a supplier for numerous roasting, gas cleaning and sulfuric acid plants, Outotec has intensified its effort in recent years to develop solutions to accommodate increasing customer need. This article presents a short review on how Outotec is applying advanced control tools for the fluidized bed industry. Focus will be given on how to transfer the existing technology (used in selected Zinc roasting plants for over a year now) to copper roasting. Outotec has developed the Pretium Roaster Optimizer, a system based on heat and mass-balanced simulation models. Direct experience with this technology will be shared and will highlight similarities to the Partial and Sulfate Copper roasting processes. Pretium detects equipment and plant bottlenecks and provides consistency in process development. The Pretium program combines 24/7 advanced online digitalization tools, along with expert personal support when required. INTRODUCTION Fluidized bed reactors have been used for commercial-scale zinc and copper roasting since the 1950s. While the principles of roasting remain unchanged, over time, the technology has advanced to improve process control of roasting plants. In the past, environmental and safety standards were the driving forces for improvement of equipment and plant design. Today, the emphasis is on plant efficiency and optimization. Another change has come in process control philosophy. While plant control and operation have traditionally been the responsibility of owner/operators, they have now shifted to include both integrated digital tools and specific know-how from engineering companies. This can be seen from the earliest design stages through commissioning and into production, as evidenced by zinc roasting plants in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey.

"The Ararat Terminal Station (ARTS) is located 190km to the north-west of Melbourne, approximately 1.7km to the north of Elmhurst Township in the Pyrenees region of western Victoria, Australia. The site occupies an area of approximately 7.2 hectare of farmland. The electricity generated by the Ararat Wind Farm is directed to the ARTS terminal station before being connected to the grid. The ARTS structural design includes more than 180 steel yard support structures, three 25m-tall gantry ‘A’ frames, three modular control room buildings, a precast transformer bund, precast fire wall structures and related foundation design. Innovative driven engineered glue laminated timber (glulam) piles in a cruciform shape were used to reduce the foundation construction time, cost and the amount of concrete used in the project. It is the first time that engineered timber piles made from farmed Australian pine trees have been used in a large-scale environmentally-friendly project. Durability of the timber was achieved by H5 treatment and the use of reinforced concrete pile caps to protect the cruciform timber piles at the ground line. A pile-driving sequence was developed based on field trials. The lateral load capacities of the piles were estimated using engineering principles and from full-scale tests in the field. This paper provides an overview of details of engineered timber cruciform piles, durability of timber piles, design information, pile construction procedures, pile-driving procedures, the testing protocol, test results and validation. The test results were compared with predictions from several methods. In addition, potential future applications of similar systems in other infrastructure projects, and opportunities for future improvements are discussed. The possibility has been mentioned that large pressure gradients in a solution gas driven field caused by high production rates might lead to a reduction in the ultimate recovery obtainable compared to that which would be obtained by a very slow rate of production. In the present study the reservoir conditions accompanying a high rate of production and the corresponding ultimate recovery were compared with those obtained if the reservoir were produced at some marginal rate throughout its entire life. The method of calculation involved the application of fluid flow - material balance analysis to a series of successive steady state conditions in the reservoir. In the case studied very little difference in recovery was obtained at the abandonment pressure. An analysis of the basic factors involved indicates that the sane results would hold for considerable variation in properties of reservoir fluids, permeability of the formation or well spacing. Even if the reservoir has a water drive it appears that no harm will be done by- open flow production if the rate is cut back before any appreciable free gas is produced. However, any condition which leads to disproportionate withdrawal rates and which causes large pressure differences over large areas might result in substantial loss in ultimate recovery. INTRODUCTION When the pressure declines in a reservoir, gas is evolved from solution causing a shrinkage in the reservoir oil so that a stock tank barrel of oil with its residual dissolved gas occupies a smaller volume than originally. For a given reservoir oil saturation, therefore. stock tank oil content will be higher at the lower pressure. At the same time the evolved gas which remains in the reservoir reduces the reservoir oil saturation, and this would be expected perhaps to cause a reduction in stock tank oil content. However, around the well the shrinkage occurs so rapidly that stock tank oil may actually accumulate in this region in spite of the simultaneous reduction in reservoir oil saturation. If this accumulation should continue, spreading into a larger zone, the loss might be appreciable and because larger pressure gradients accompany higher rates the accumulation might possibly be large if wells are produced at too high a rate. It is the purpose of this paper to determine the effect of rate of flow on ultimate recovery by solution gas drive. The problem under consideration involves the unsteady state flow of oil in a closed radial system from which oil is produced by the evolution of gas as a finite drawdown is estalllished and the reservoir pressure declines. A somewhat similar unsteady state production problem dealing, however, with a linear system has been considered by Muskat and Meres, but these authors do not discuss the effects which rate may have on recovery. Other methods have been reported for estimaling recovery as a function of pressure decline when producing at an infinitesimal rate, and Muskat and Taylor' have shown the effect of fluid and reservoir characteristics on recovery under these conditions. Assuming steady state to exist, Babson has given a procedure for computing the decline in well productivity as the field is depleted, and Moyer has combined these methods to estimate abandonment conditions and the resulting ultimate recovery. These latter approaches to the problem either do not consider the effect of rate or assume steady state can be established. In detail this paper presents the behavior of the reservoir producing under unsteady state conditions and considers the effect of production rate during this unsteady state flow on the recovery attained. The analysis also shows that there will exist at abandonment a type of steady state, and on this basis a method has been clevelopetl for rapid calculation of abandonment conditions.

The effects of compositions and firing temperatures on the physico-mechanical properties of blended Nsu fireclay and Nkalaha redbrick clay have been investigated. The clay samples were compounded according to the following ratios: 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10 in the order Nsu: Nkalaha respectively, and test samples made and fired at 9000C, 10000C 11000C and 12000C. The properties tested for were the modulus of rupture, porosity, shrinkage, apparent density, water absorption and bulk density. From the results obtained, it is inferred that the blends have a maximum service temperature of 11000C, with the 30: 70 blend presenting the best characteristics. A conclusion is drawn to the effect that the blend could be adapted for the production of ceramic earthenware, electrical porcelain pin insulators, cement manufacture and for refractory linings where temperature requirements are less severe.
