The specific effect of various rare-earth metals on the room- and elevated-temperature properties of magnesium has been evaluated. Alloys containing didymium exhibit the highest tensile and compressive strengths at room and elevated temperatures. All the rare-earth metals increase the creep resistance of extruded magnesium at temperatures in the range of 400° to 600°F, but the degree of enhancement depends on the temperature and on the concentration of the added metal. THE effects of rare-earth metals on the properties of sand-cast magnesium were discussed in some detail in earlier paper by the author.' The present paper deals with the effect of the same alloying elements on the properties of extruded magnesium. This investigation also had as its aim the development of a wrought alloy having a better combination of room-temperature strength and ductility and elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance than is found in magnesium-Mischmetal-manganese alloys, which have been reported earlier.2-5 The only known attempt to study wrought magnesium alloys containing pure cerium instead of Mischmetal was made by Mellor and Ridley.6 They found that in the form of rolled bars there is a definite, optimum cerium content for creep resistance at 200 °C and that the creep resistance of these alloys at 200 °C is significantly Improved by heat treatment at 550" to 580"C. In the present investigation the compositional variation in mechanical properties of the following alloy systems is presented: I—magnesium-Misch-metal. 2—magnesium-cerium-free Mischmetal. 3— magnesium-didymium. 4—magnesium-cerium. 5— magnesium-lanthanum. Alloys containing predominately praseodymium are not included in this series because of the lack of this material. Experimental Procedures The alloying ingredients used in preparing the alloys described herein are the same as those reported in the earlier paper.' Cerium-free Mischmetal is the rare-earth mixture remaining when the cerium is removed from Mischmetal, which contains all the rare-earth metals as they occur naturally in mon-azite sand, the ore from which Mischmetal is produced. Removal of both cerium and lanthanum from Mischmetal leaves what is commonly called "didym-ium," consisting predominantly of neodymium and praseodymium. Although the composition of the particular batch of each metal used may differ somewhat from the analysis presented previously, these differences are not great enough to warrant repeat- ing the specific composition of each material. The electrolytic magnesium used as the starting material in these alloys has the same typical analysis as that given in the earlier paper.' The alloys were prepared in small laboratory melts applying all the necessary precautions for alloying rare-earth metals with magnesium described by Marande.' Most melts were large enough to cast one 3 in. diam billet 10 in. long. In a few cases, particularly the didymium-containing alloys, the lack of sufficient amounts of the rare-earth metal limited the size of the billet to 6 to 8 in. All billets were scalped to a diameter of 2 15/16 in. and faced to a length of 9 ¼ in. as limited by the size of the extrusion container. The alloys were extruded into ½ in. diam rod on a 500-ton direct-extrusion press using a 3 in. container. The details of the extrusion step are: billet preheat, 925°F (2 hr); container temperature, 900°F; die temperature, 900°F; extrusion speed, 10 ft per min; reduction ratio, 36:1; and percent reduction, 97.3. The lower melting point of alloys containing didymium' necessitated reduction of the extrusion speed to 5 ft per min in order to prevent hot shorting during extrusion. Adequate lengths were cropped from both ends of each extruded rod to assure that all the material used for tests was extruded under uniform conditions. Tensile and compressive properties at room temperature are reported in the several conditions of heat treatment. The ASTM designations are used to distinguish these conditions as follows: T5—Direct age at 400°F (16 hr) T4—Heat treat at 950°F (4 hr) for alloys containing didymium T4—Heat treat at 1050°F (4 hr) for all other alloys T6—T4 + age at 400 °F (16 hr) The lower heat-treating temperature for alloys containing didymium is necessitated by the lower melting point of these alloys. All heat treatments were conducted in electrically heated, circulating-air furnaces. A protective atmosphere containing 0.5 to 1.0 pct sulphur dioxide was used for the high temperature heat treatments. Tension and creep specimens 6 Yz in. long and compression specimens 1½ in. long were cut from the extruded rod. Land uplift due to mine flooding has become a significant challenge with extensive historical mining activities, particularly in Germany’s Ruhr district. The cessation of coal mining operations has led to a gradual rise in groundwater levels, altering geotechnical and hydrological conditions and causing surface uplift. This study develops a system dynamics (SD) model to investigate the dynamic interactions of influential variables such as groundwater levels, total stress, porosity and permeability with land uplift over time. The model integrates causal loop diagrams (CLD) and stock flow diagrams (SFD) to comprehensively understand the system’s behavior. SFD illustrated that for a 10 percent increase in groundwater level, the land uplift increased by about +6 percent, and a rise of 200 percent in total stress caused an 18 percent increase in effective stress, which decreased the land uplift by about 20 percent. This study highlights the importance of dynamic modeling in informing land-use planning and mitigating the long-term impacts of land uplift after mine closures.

"Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. THE alloys formed by the addition of nickel to iron by convelltional metallurgical procedures show physical properties that differ widely from those of the individual metals. The effect of alloying on the mechanical properties is most pronounced in alloys containing between 15 and 25 per cent nickel. The tensile strength of an alloy containing, for example, 20 per cent nickel and 80 per cent iron (with 0.06 per cent carbon), in an annealed condition, is above 150,000 lb. per sq. in.? owing to a martensitic type of transformation, as compared with about 50,000 lb. per sq. in. for pure iron in the same condition. The object of this work was to determine whether the same beneficial alloying effect could be obtained in alloys of iron and nickel prepared by powder metallurgy technique. PROCEDURE Bars and pellets for tension and compression tests, respectively, were made. Two groups of specimens were prepared: (I) by cold-pressing the powders and sintering; (2) by cold-pressing the powders, sintering, repressing and resintering. Raw Materials Nickel powder supplied by Metals Disintegrating co., marked MD-151, was used. A typical analysis of this powder was as follows: sulphur, 0.040 per cent; copper, 0.18; iron, 0.23; manganese, 0.002; magnesium, 0.001 5 ; lead, 0.035; tin, 0.025 ; silicon, 0.08; chromium, 0.008. Electrolytic iron powder supplied by Plastic Metals Inc. was used. A representative chemical analysis for impurities other than gases, supplied by the vendor, gave the following results: carbon, 0.005 per cent; manganese, 0.002; silicon, 0.003; phosphorus, 0.001; sulphur, 0.004; nickel, 0.008. The fractions from these powders passing a 3 2 5-mesh sieve were reduced in hydrogen at 600°C. for one hour, to clean the surfaces of the particles. The reduced powders, slightly caked, were ground in a mortar and screened again through a 325- mesh sieve. Mixing The proper proportions of the powders were mixed overnight on rolls, in glass jars fitted with iron-wire baffles to break aggregates of particles that might form. Pressing All specimens were compacted on hydraulic presses. The pellets were compacted in a cylindrical die, ½ in. diameter. The ratio of thickness to the diameter of the pellets was maintained as nearly as possible at 0.9, as specifed for standard short compression pieces. PRODUCTION of nickel in Cuba, a new source of this metal, has been started by the Nicaro Nickel Co., subsidiary of the Freeport Sulphur Co. Construction of the Nicaro plant in Oriente Province, Cuba, and of a refinery at Wilmington, Del., has been "substantially completed," according to Langbourne M. Williams, Jr., president. The initial rate of output is less than capacity operation, which will be reached when "the customary problems incident to the commencement of full- scale production are eliminated." The plant in Cuba for the treatment of the extensive nickeliferous ores of that region, and the refinery, were built by Nicaro for the account of the Defense Plant Corp. construction has been under way for eighteen months. This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

THE September issue of MINING AND METALLURGY might almost have served as a review of the advances in the metallurgy of gold during the current year. In addition to a scholarly article by F. W. Bradley, there were able descriptions by W. W. Bradley and W. F. Boericke of the methods followed in California and in Ontario. Considered together, the two last-named articles indicate the many possible combinations of flotation with one or more of the older processes. This, the prominence of flotation as an aid in the beneficiation of gold ores, is probably the most striking of the year's developments. It would perhaps be nearer the fact to say that the year has not been marked by the gold metallurgists' discovery of the flotation process, but rather by the flotation merchandizers' discovery of gold metallurgy. I say this because native gold was floated successfully more than fifteen years ago, and a reference to these results was published six years ago.

SCANDINAVIAN countries seem somehow to furnish an amount of talent and leadership far be- yond their population and among them Sweden is possibly at the top. The United States has many eminent citizens born in the latter, country or who are of Swedish descent and the engineers may claim their full share. In fact, the number is so large that a flourishing Swedish-American Engineering Society has been formed, including a number of A. I. M. E. members. Dr. Waldemar Lindgren is more scientist than engineer, though his work in economic geology has contributed directly to the development of many mines, and he is the valued- adviser of a number of our larger companies. Probably he, himself, values most highly the contributions he has been able to make to scientific theories of the occurrence and genesis of ore deposits. His fellow scientists have placed upon these the high mark of approval by electing him to the National Academy of Sciences, and Princeton University in 1916 recognized his position by conferring on him the degree of Doctor of Science.

"Screening is an important means of size classification used on granular or particulate materials. The vibrating modes of screen separator have a great effect on the screening process. Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

A unit for separating minerals into two prescribed size fractions, designated as a Lewis Hydrosizer, was developed at the North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory. Ore samples with different mineral compositions, including coal, were separated effectively with the laboratory continuous unit. Commercial size units are in operation in North Carolina and Mexico, and under construction in Norway. Additional units are being build or are in the planning stage at several companies.

The practice of using doors to control main ventilating currents in bituminous-coal mines is common throughout the industry. When doors are erected in pairs to form air locks, they are usually accepted as satisfactory by both State and Federal coal-mine-inspection agencies. A review of the contributing factors in recent methane ignitions showed that interrupted ventilation (often caused by doors latched open, destroyed, or damaged) was the principal cause of methane accumulations that subsequently were ignited.

"""The north coast of the St. Lawrence River will be the scene of an industrial development during the coming decades"". The facts which underlie this statement are the occurrences of iron and titanium ore, the abundance of hydro-power and the availability of deep-water ports in this region. Havre St-Pierre, Sept-Iles, Port Cartier and Baie Corneau already exist as major ports and urban centers. The huge quartz deposit at Baie Comeau will be a decisive contributing factor in the development of a metallurgical plant in this area. Due to its purity, it lends itself, first of all, to the manufacture of glass of different kinds, being comparable to the quartz sands now used by the plate glass and glass container industries in the Montreal area, Moncton, N.B., Trois-Rivieres and - in the future - at Bécancour, Quebec. However, its high quality will also make it possible to use it as one of the main basic materials for the production of silicon carbide and ferrosilicon, and as a flux in metallurgical processes. It is intended, in this report, to offer conclusive proof of the economical importance of this large quartz deposit by presenting the results of the studies made to date."

This study was performed to analyze the behavior of the blowing curtain face ventilation system modified with a specially designed regulator, called Wing Regulator. The purpose of the regulator is to extend the airflow penetration depth toward the face and allow effective face ventilation at curtain setback up to 13.7m (45ft) from the face. A small scale model of the Wing Regulator was successfully tested in the Mine Ventilation Laboratory at the University of Kentucky. Then a prototype of the proposed regulator was tested in full-scale in mine environment. Series of three dimensional simulations were performed to support this research using validated CFD code. This paper presents results of the performed studies and discuses the advantages of using the Wing Regulator. Presented information relates to the US Provisional Patent Application No 61/818,112.

The rapid improvement of the airborne scintillometer and the perfection of its efficiency for counting low energy gamma radiation has made it possible to work out a technique to map in great detail the radiation pattern at the earth's surface. On such maps low radiation over certain areas appears to indicate the existence of oil accumulations, forming a pattern similar to that obtained by the geo-chemists. RADIOACTIVE analyses of samples from the surface of oil fields were carried out more than 10 years ago in Alberta by the alpha particle ioniza-tion chamber technique,' but large enough tracts could not be covered in these investigations to make possible any evaluation of the method as a means of oil exploration. Considerable interest has recently been revived, however, as a result of certain striking advances which have been made in the instrumentation available -for the measurement of radioactivity. It is the object of this paper to indicate the nature of these improvements in radiation technology and then to describe the attempts that have been made to interpret the radioactive patterns obtained in the course of airborne recordings with the new instruments. Since the survey can be carried out from the air and records can be accumulated over vast areas in a short time, the result may easily lend itself to statistical treatment. Areas have been surveyed in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and Montana. Producing fields in Alberta and West Texas have been flown over several times in different directions, Fig. 1. The operations were then extended into unknown territory and drill holes were put down on the anomalies which looked promising. The results from these drillings were encouraging and have given hopes for the development of an entirely new method of oil exploration. Any large scale method for the survey of radioactive anomalies must be based on the measurement of gamma rays, as beta and alpha rays have much too short a range to be of any significance. Thus the essential improvement which has made the present stage of this work attainable is the development of new highly sensitive detectors for gamma radiation. In the past the only detectors of any consequence that were available were the ionization chamber and the geiger counter, but both of these suffer from the defect that only a small proportion of the gamma rays passing through the counter are detected, possibly 0.1 to 0.2 pct. The recent development of the scintillation counter2,3 has completely transformed the situation and has had a considerable impact on many branches of nuclear technology. The detection of alpha particles in zinc sulphide screens by visual observation of the individual scintillations which these particles produce dates back to the early spinthariscope of Rutherford and Crookes, but the combined use of an appropriate scintillating phosphor and photomultiplier tube had to await the technical development of the latter many years later. With this development came the modern era of the scintillation counter and a knowledge of phosphors which have a large light output under the bombarding action of gamma radiation. Some of these phosphors are relatively dense and are capable of stopping a large proportion of the incident gamma radiation. As the sensitive region is the whole volume of the crystal, a very high detection efficiency, 50 pct or more, can be obtained for medium energy gamma rays. Scintillation counters for geological purposes were first developed in 19494-6 in an attempt to utilize this remarkable improvement in efficiency, which has the attractive consequence that only a small portion of the normal background of the counter is due to cosmic radiation. In 1949 tests were made in northern Saskatchewan by Lundberg Explorations Ltd. with portable scintillation counters which gave excellent results in the search for uranium and served to indicate unknown uranium deposits in areas previously closely surveyed with geiger counters. Portable scintillometers (registered in Canada) are now commercially available and in regular use,' and the adaptation of the instrument to radioactivity oil well logging has also been very successful.8 Initial attempts to measure radioactivity from aircraft with scintillation counters were made during this period in the same area and yielded most encouraging results. It would be appropriate to consider some specific requirements for airborne investigations. The essential problem to be met in the detection of any radioactive source is the necessity of obtaining a signal greater than the statistical fluctuations of the background counting rate for the instrument. It is possible to show that Nt>2k2 is the condition for detectability of a signal where N = average background counting rate for the detection. t = time constant of the counting rate meter, used to determine the average number of counts arriving in a certain predetermined time interval. N' = average source counting rate at the detector. k = N/N', and N>>N'. Sample values are given in Table I. Assume that the aircraft carrying the equipment is travelling at 120 mph, in which case it will cover 176 ft in 1 sec. Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." The discovery and exploration of deposits are progressively shifting to extremely remote regions and greater depths. As a result, exploration costs and the economic risk of a bad investment increase. Current megatrends in the exploration and mining sector indicate a growing demand for the implementation of automation, digitalisation, and machine learning techniques. The implementation of a multi-sensor-based core logging device (DMT, 2024) was done on 400 m of drill cores to optimise interdisciplinary processes in terms of time and quality, by using interlinked and consistent data in real-time, to obtain reliable predictions that support and speed up decision-making. The results are consistent with the laboratory data previously obtained by the mining company, highlighting the benefits of introducing ANCORELOG into their core logging procedures.

Platinum group elements (PGE) are often found in arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals as inclusions in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the poor recoveries of the arsenic minerals. Flotation characteristics of a synthetic nickel arsenide and arsenopyrite were studied through rest potential and oxidation rate determinations, surface analyses, and micro-and batch-flotation tests. The use of nitrogen during grinding and flotation together with copper activation improved the PGE recoveries from Duluth Complex ores. The flotation behaviors of the sulfarsenide minerals are still unresolved. The role that electrochemical interactions play among arsenides, sulfarsenides, sulfides and grinding media on their f10atabilities is discussed.

Retrievability of emplaced nuclear waste from the geologic repository is a performance objective imposed by Federal Regulations. This requirement is designed to provide confidence in the Department of Energy's repository design by keeping the option of retrieval open if the engineered or natural systems prove inadequate for containment and long-term isolation of high-level nuclear waste. This paper presents a summary of current Nuclear Regulatory Commission Staff thinking on the design of the repository for retrieval, and level of retrievability demonstration that may be required during site characterization. However, this paper does not represent official U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission position on this topic.

The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.
