Summary During Palaeozoic time, there were deposited in the Canadian Rockies four beds of phosphate rock, ranging in age from Mississippian to Jurassic. Two of these beds are of probable economic importance if some means of separating the phosphate from the gangue can be devised. All the more important beds of phosphate rock so far discovered are just behind the front ranges of the Rocky mountains, within fifty miles of the prairie lands of Alberta. Mining conditions are favourable, with an abundance of timber and ample power available. The phosphate beds are all of the sedimentary type, and they all occur, apparently, at the same stratigraphic horizons over a wide area. The conditions necessary for deposition evidently occurred at several different periods in geological time, and were widespread. The most important factor appears to have been the condition of the land surface surrounding the basin of de-position. Both oolitic and nodular phosphate were laid down under nearly similar conditions. Introduction Following the discovery of phosphate rock in Idaho and Montana, search was commenced in Canada to determine whether formations of similar age in the Canadian Rockies carried similar beds of phosphate. The most widespread search has been that undertaken by the mines department of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada. The following paper will discuss some of the results of this exploration.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for nearly 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In recent years, the number of some annual ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, the twin disasters at Crandall Canyon in 2007, in which nine miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990s, these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents since 2005. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery, where there has been just one fatal incident since 2005. On the other hand, more than 300 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting and inside control roof bolters could reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety.

Process automation can provide better utilization of capital investments. Furthermore, it is a necessity for securing the high demands of product quality. In this paper, process automation in underground mining as well as in the beneficiation plant will be discussed. The development of reliable broadband communication systems for real-time transfer of image, audio and data have enabled remotely controlled LHDs and drilling rigs. In the beneficiation plants, model-based expert control systems far on-line dynamic process optimization and control have been installed in unit operations such as grinding, flotation and induration.

From the inception of zinc retorting on a commercial scale in the United States in 1890,' the retort employed has undergone wide variations in its composition and manufacture, facilitating in part equally remarkable improvements in furnace capacities. The early day hand made clay retort was charged with carbonates or silicates or with coarse dead roasted concentrates mixed with a large proportion of charge fuel resulting in a relatively low zinc burden and fired 24 hr in direct coal fired furnaces. Its modern counterpart is fabricated in hydraulic presses from clay mixtures containing sizeable amounts of either silicon carbide or silica flour, charged with sintered flotation concentrates to more than three times the early day zinc burden and fired 24 to 48 hr in gas fired furnaces. This paper does not attempt to describe in detail the early day clay retort practice as it is well outlined in treatises by Ingalls,2 Lodin,3 Liehig,4 Hofman5 and others. A brief review of clay retort practice is presented together with a description of the major developments since 1912. Clay Retorts The Belgian type retort, both in the circular and elliptical forms, has been used almost exclusively. Typical dimensions of press made clay retorts around 1910 are shown in Table 1. Variations in these dimensions were used at different plants according to local conditions to a maximum inside diameter of 9 in. and inside length of 54 in. However, the effective heat penetration in a 24 hr firing cycle and the tendency of the retort to bend limited the retort size. Use of the elliptical vessel was an attempt to present a stronger cross-section resisting the tendency to bend and to increase the burden without increasing the depth of heat penetration. One exception to the 48-54 in. length was the 60 in. retort used as early as 1905 at Palmerton by means of supporting the last 12 in. at the butt end with a specially designed furnace back-wall. This backwall construction with the 60 in. retort had been developed and used at Bethlehem by G. G. Con-vers and A. B. DeSaulles. An attempt was made at Blende, Colo. to use even larger retorts of the Rhenish type based on European practice and requiring much higher furnace temperatures. Satisfactory plastic clays capable of withstanding these temperatures were not available, and the plant never operated successfully. PREPARATION OF BATCH Composition of the clay retort by weight was 40 to 50 pct raw clay and the balance "grog." Generally speaking the mix consisted of 7 parts plastic clay to 9 parts grog by volume. Principal source of the clay used was the Cheltenham vein—sometimes referred to as "St. Louis city clay." A typical analysis was A12O3-31.0 pct, SiO2-50.0 pct, Fe2O3-2.5 pct, MgO-0.3 pct, CaO-1.5 pct and loss on ignition 14.0 pct. At the smelter the clay was weathered whenever possible and then crushed to 0.08 in. or finer. Grog consisted of calcined adobies, cleaned retort scrap and cleaned refuse fire brick such as old furnace brick, blast furnace linings, and others. Saggers from ceramic plants and calcined flint clay were later used. The grog materials were ground to 0.12 m. or finer. Occasionally coke dust up to 10 pct of the mix was substituted for a part of the grog following European practice.² Particle size of the grog has a major influence on the retort properties—the larger the grain, the better can the retort withstand thermal shocks, resist bending at furnace temperatures and resist corrosion from slag; the smaller the grain, the lower the loss of zinc vapor through the retort walls. Grog forms the skeleton of the retort, and the clay shrinks around its grains to act as a binder. In the drying process, the grog has a stabilizing effect on the drying rate, decreasing shrinkage and giving up previously absorbed water to the surrounding clay to minimize the danger of cracking or checking.² Grog and clay were mixed through a horizontal pug mill with 10 to 20 pct water added, depending on whether the retort was to be formed by hand or mechanically, more water being required for the hand process. The batch or "mud" extruded from the pug mill was cut in convenient lengths for handling, stacked in piles or in special rooms, covered with wet burlap and allowed to "rot" or age from 1 to 8 weeks to increase plasticity. HAND MOLDING If the retort was to be molded by hand, the mud was repugged after the rotting period and given to the molders. Their molds consisted of 3 sheet iron or wood cylinders, each one third the retort length and defining the outer shape of the retort. Quarrying in Australia accounts for a total annual production of around 200 Mt/a of sand, aggregate and materials used in construction. This material has an annual value of the order of $2 billion and, combined with transport costs of a further $1 billion, the annual value of quarry products are in excess of $3 billion. Currently all of the production of construction materials in Australia is from open cut quarrying or dredging. This paper focuses on the extraction of material by underground mining methods, termed æunderground quarryingÆ. The paper considers a case study for future underground development expansion of the existing open cut Mt Coot-tha quarry, located 5 km from the centre of Brisbane, Queensland.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this summer is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. The increase in volatility is shown by a lowering of the distillation temperatures, ranging from 2°F. at the average initial boiling point to 4°F. at the average end point. During the past nine years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the eighteenth in the series. The cities in which samples were collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. Samples were collected in Omaha as well as in the 11 cities where samples were taken last winter. It was believed advisable to include samples from Omaha in order to give a better balance to the survey for the country as a whole.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

The feed to Chadurmalu iron ore concentrator plant is a mixture of magnetite and haematite iron ore with a Fe/FeO ratio of about 8. The feed to plant, after grinding via wet SAG mill, is pre-separated by wet low intensity magnetic separator. Magnetic product is conducted to magnetite processing circuit for producing magnetite concentrate, and nonmagnetic product is directed to haematite processing circuit. Due to surface oxidization of magnetite particles and a decrease in magnetic attraction properties, significant amount of these particles are misled to tailing which results in decreasing the efficiency of haematite processing circuit. This problem can be remedied by using magnetic drum separator with more magnetic intensity and/or gradient. In this paper, the replacement of LIMS separators with wet medium intensity magnetic separators with a field intensity of 3800 gauss on drum surface (MIMS) have been suggested and considered as the most suitable solution to prevent the loss of magnetite particles. The results of carried out investigations with replacement of drum separators in industrial scale, showed that utilizing MIMS in magnetite processing circuit resulted in increasing final concentrate weight recovery on average by 2.59%, without any adverse effect on the concentrate quality; decreasing the magnetite content in the feed to high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) by about 3.5%; decreasing the feed to floatation part by about 7% and consequently decreasing consumption of chemical reagents; increasing Fe/FeO ratio of the feed to plant. Blasting in the heart of the historic Byward Market District of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, presents a unique set of challenges. The obvious difficulties arising on projects requiring blasting within 3 m (10 ft) of 125 year old buildings in various states of disrepair have been encountered and successfully dealt with countless times before. The complexities increase exponentially when tenuous property boundaries, unknown structural details, litigious histories and the need for encroachment agreements lead to individuals with competing interests all able to impact the same operation. Blasting on three projects in the Market was started in early 2005 after months of negotiation. Ultimately, the potential for the projects to proceed hinged on the ability to successfully disseminate blast data to the various stakeholders. As part of the agreements drawn up, property owners demanded immediate notification of the measured vibration levels with contract provisions including clauses such that any exceedance of the USBM criteria immediately triggered project shut down and complete blasting program redesign, and approval by all parties. With stakeholders located in various cities and, in some instances, on various continents, a conventional attended monitoring strategy would not satisfy the requirements. In response to the critical reporting need, Explotech Engineering Ltd. installed unattended monitoring stations around the sites, all incorporating wireless telemetry. After each blast, data was automatically transferred from the monitoring stations to a web-linked server via the wireless network, where it was immediately available to project stakeholders through a password protected website. The solution required a unique blend of data acquisition, telemetry, database, and security technologies, all married to produce a reliable system that was easy to maintain and use. While these types of systems were originally developed for use as permanent monitoring networks in operating mines and quarries, monitoring professionals are increasingly benefiting from the technology on temporary building projects that have typically been the realm of attended monitoring strategies. Globally, this has emerged as a solution to provide more timely access to data for stakeholders, and to minimize the legal exposure from multiple violations of vibration limits. As this trend is likely to continue, the regulated vibration control industry is likely to see a continued shift in technology development to leverage wireless networks and the Internet to continue to improve data transfer, archiving and distribution.

To check the feasibility and the quality of a very deep diaphragm wall, a tern of adjacent panels has been constructed, up to a depth of 100 m, in the Milan sandy gravelly soil by means of a hydraulically driven milling machine with reverse circulation of mud. The results of the monitoring carried out in order to evaluate the panel geometry and the quality of both joints and concrete are described. The use of instrumentation based on different physical principles allowed the cross checking of measurements as well as the evaluation of the accuracy and sensitivity of each single procedure to be performed. The trial field was successfully carried out and the feasibility of a diaphragm wall of such a depth was demonstrated and corroborated by a reasonable level of quality control.

Preliminary analysis of the data shows that in addition to the shearer's haulage speed, there are four major factors that influence the airborne dust distribution in longwall face areas: locations with respect to the position of the shearer's cutting, hardness of the materials, characteristics of water spray, and roof conditions. This paper presents the effects of those four parameters in detail.INTRODUCTIONA research project was initiated in September 1983 to measure and construct .a dust distribution map for the longwall face. During the first year, airborne dust samplings were performed in two longwall panels located in northern and southern West Virginia and working in the Pittsburgh and Eagle Seams, respectively. The physical parameters and equipment employed for both panels are 1 isled in Table 1. Figure 1 shows the detailed characteristics of the coal seams. Notice in both panels floor cutting was involved either to gain sufficient mining height or to reduce the adverse effects associated with a soft floor.The purpose of the research is to define the dust distribution at any instance in the longwall face area so that proper working positions can be determined and/or effective dust control techniques can be developed.This paper presents the partial results obtained during the first year."

"Taking the long flame coal, gas-fat coal and anthracite as samples, we tested the adsorption quantity to single component gas of N2, CO2 and CH4 under atmospheric pressure phase at different temperatures. Then we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models of different metamorphic coals. The results show that metamorphic grade, temperature and gases species are main factors to adsorption quantity of coal. The higher and lower metamorphic grade of coal have greatly influence on adsorption capacity while moderate grade of coal has opposite result. The coal adsorption amount to three single component gases under the same experimental condition is CO2> CH4> N2.The simulation precision order of four adsorption models is quadratic curve model > Freundlich isotherm model> Langmuir model >logarithmic curve model. Quadratic curve model and Freundlich isotherm model both can accurately describe the adsorption behaviors of N2 and CH4, different isothermal adsorption curve of CO2 needs two kinds or more models to describe. This has a reference value to the study of adsorption characteristics and models to single component gases.INTRODUCTION Adsorption is the interfacial phenomena that concentration of single or multiple components in the interface layer is different from the bulk phase (1964). Adsorption model is mathematical models to describe the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent, mainly reflected to fitting effect of gas adsorption isotherm, which contribute to deeply understand the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent. Many scholars have carried out extensively experimental studies of the coal adsorption process from different angles. Zhao (2010) studied the influence of coal metamorphism to pore development of coal seam through a variety of experimental methods. Zhang (2006) analyzed the adsorption capacity and the controlling factors from three aspects of the coal rank, maceral and coal mass deformation. Cheng et al., (2002) studied the influence of pore size distribution of different rank coals to adsorption constants. Zhong (2002) carried out varieties of isothermal assay and established the prediction method of coal seam adsorption affected by a variety of conditions. R. M. Bustin (1998) proposed that we could not simply describe the change law of coal adsorption capacity and maceral content by a fixed parameter, and the adsorption capacity of the same coal rank also has great change. C. R. Clarkson et al., (1997) used four different adsorption models to describe the coal methane adsorption process, and the fitting precision of adsorption models is D-A equation >D-R equation > BET equation> Langmuir equation. Gasem, K et al., (2003) found that the fitted isothermal adsorption curve of D-A equation and BET equation are better than Langmuir equation under high pressure condition, while D-R equation and BET model are better to CO2 adsorption. In recent years, scholars’ at home and abroad research achievements of coal adsorption focused on high-pressure stage (about 0~15 MPa), mainly for coalbed methane exploitation, carbon dioxide trapping and sealing technology development, but the study of coal adsorption under atmospheric pressure phase is little. BINARY and ternary alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt respond to annealing in a magnetic field by a characteristic change in the shape of their hysteresis 100p.l,2 An increase in retentivity and a decrease in coercive force produced by the magnetic treatment cause the hysteresis loop to approach the appearance of a rectangle. Materials with a rectangular hysteresis loop have made possible the contact-rectifier³ and have greatly improved the performance of pulse transformers4 and magnetic amplifiers." In the best material presently available for these applications, a 50 pct nickel-iron alloy," the desired characteristics are achieved by aligning the preferred crystallographic directions of magnetization along the rolling direction of the tape. The objective of the present study has been to produce rectangular hysteresis characteristics in materials with inherently high saturation. Iron-cobalt alloys, exhibiting saturation values up to 24,000 gausses' appeared to offer promise for the magnetic annealing technique, because they remain magnetic to very high temperatures,8 exhibit favorable magnetostriction properties: and show zero crystal energy at 42 pct cobalt.10 Among the ternary iron-cobalt-nickel alloys,7,11 response to heat treatment in a magnetic field is unfortunately limited to alloys having rather low saturation values.' It appeared interesting nevertheless, to study a series of compositions connecting the optimum composition (50/50) of the binary iron-cobalt system with the "Perminvar" composition (30 pct Fe, 25 pct Co, and 45 pct Ni). Very recently, R. Smoluchowski and R. W. Turner," have shown that under certain circumstances magnetic annealing can produce oriented recrystallization. The paper describes the design, construction and quality control aspects of the installation of a cement-bentonite (CB) cut off wall to impede seepage through a flood control dike. Special emphasis is placed upon the development of a proper specification, distinguishing the CB method from the Soil-Bentonite technique. The importance of the pre-construction laboratory testing program and field quality control procedures is emphasized by the fact that the in-place properties and characteristics of the CB cut off may not be known until after a majority of the work is complete. Sections are included which describe the construction method, the specialty equipment and personnel requirements and the quality control/quality assurance aspects of the project.

Traditional practice to resist large lateral loads on foundations is the use of large diameter caissons, battered driven piles, or battered micropiles. Dense urban construction environments, however, limit the usefulness of these systems due to the close proximity of below- and above-grade obstructions. This paper presents two micropile construction projects in the United States where a complex scheme of battered micropiles and grade beams was developed to counteract large lateral loads at the foundation level. The paper also presents a procedure used to design vertical micropiles for large lateral loads, which can greatly simplify the design of foundations subject to significant lateral loads in urban environments. A design example shows a case where vertical micropiles were used to support allowable design lateral loads greater than 80 kip per micropile.

IMPINGEMENT attack, as one of the types of corrosion suffered by condenser tubes, has been given a prominent place in corrosion literature of recent years. It has been reproduced and studied in carefully controlled laboratory tests. Much has been learned of its mechanism, and of the effects of variables such as temperature, amount of air, size of bubble and water velocity. Incidentally the technical public has been given comparisons between the behavior of some few metals under various conditions of impingement attack. The tests recorded here were undertaken in an effort to find at least some sort of qualitative answer to questions which arose occasionally as to the relative resistance of various alloys to impingement attack, and which could not be answered by reference to the literature. The final decision to start work on the problem was influenced in large measure by the nature of the water available in this particular place. The mill of the Bridgeport Brass Co. is located on the Pequonnock River at Bridgeport, Conn., within two miles of its mouth. The water is much like many other estuarine sources which are used in condensers, and which cause particularly severe corrosion. It seemed a most suitable water to use in such tests. As the work progressed an important seasonal variation was noted. The purpose of this note is to record this seasonal effect. The results of individual tests are given only incidentally.

Iv all new movements unavoidable misapprehensions arise, which should be cleared away, lest they retard the progress of the movement itself. An impression has gone abroad that the movement for conservation of resources is a new movement. No one knows better than the engineer that this is not the case. Men like Douglas and Raymond and John Fritz and Edison and McDonald, and hosts of others, have preached and practiced conservation as applied to mineral resources throughout a long and useful life-time; and, in general, the work of the engineer and the chemist, both in this and in other countries, has been along the line of continually greater efficiency in the use of all available materials. And the results already accomplished through the efforts of these experts are now saving annually many millions of dollars to the people of the United States in materials and labor. It is true, however, that the need for conservation, that is, for a wiser and more efficient use of the natural resources, has taken on a new life, and is being brought home to the people of the United States in a manner which is awakening public interest and even the public conscience. It is, therefore, both appropriate and fortunate that the engineers, the chemists, and the thinking men of all classes are availing themselves of the present impetus to the movement to emphasize anew the lessons which heretofore they have found it more difficult to impress upon the American public or even upon the captains of industry. Still another of these misapprehensions is to the effect that many of the leaders in the present movement hope to bring about conservation of resources through legislation or execu-
