In Australia Alcoa has launched a co-ordinated effort to accelerate our application of Cleaner Production principles to delivering cost-effective in-process solutions to environmental issues. Our Western Australian Operations are a signatory to the WA Cleaner Production Statement, through which we provide a Cleaner Production Plan to the State Government on a voluntary basis. This paper describes in general terms AlcoaÆs goals, achievements and directions in applying Cleaner Production to enhance business performance in the economic, environmental and social dimensions. Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic.This hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so; it is concluded that there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field.However, the stratigraphic interval between the postulated source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (Pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

Bellis and Hardy was interesting to me and has led me to make a few remarks concerning some of the points brought out. The question of employing correct hardening temperatures is one that is sadly neglected, particularly in many large plants that forge and treat their machine tools for private use. As is most aptly remarked in this paper, "The custom of using one, high-speed temperature for all tools is very poor practice;" still, such practice is more common than otherwise. An instance came to my attention some time ago, in connection with some work with the standardization of high-speed steels for machine tools, where there were no less than six different brands of alloy steels being used for machine tools such as lathe, shaper, planer, boring mill and cutters of like nature. All of these different steels received identical heat and forging treatment-or at least that was the aim of the tool hardener. That the results were highly unsatisfactory goes without saying. That the hardening department of many plants is conducted on a rule-of-thumb fashion is the reason for a great deal of the trouble and disappointment which seems to be the lot of many tool-steel users. Exceedingly crude execution is the rule rather than the exception, and it is no small wonder that the results are as good as they sometimes happen to be. It would seem that at the present price of alloy steels the subject should receive a closer scrutiny by purchasers than it does. One not familiar with the workings of souse plants that disdain to lend an ear to scientific heat treatment would scarcely give credence to some of the methods employed, not only in the treatment of the steel but also in its selection and purchase. Heating for hardening should be conducted under close pyrometric control only after the correct hardening temperature has been determined.

HIGH subsurface temperatures and pressures are making cementing operations more difficult as deeper producing horizons are being sought. Recorded bottom-hole temperatures above 200°F. and pressures in excess of 12,000 Ib. per sq. in., obtained by combining hydrostatic and pump pressures, are not uncommon. Insufficient time is available for proper placement of standard Portland cement, because of the shortened setting time produced by these excessive temperatures and pressures, therefore special types of cements have been developed to overcome these difficulties. From the standpoint of placement, the ideal slurry would be one that would remain fluid long enough to be placed, then harden rapidly, so that there would be a limited amount of contamination and the well could be placed on production in a minimum of time. It is highly desirable, therefore, that some method be devised to measure accurately the time that any slurry will remain in a fluid state while being pumped into the well. To study the effect of elevated temperature and pressure on fluidity, the authors have developed the pressure-type consistometer (Figs. I and 2) described below, and are presenting data obtained with it, using slurries of both quick-setting and slow-setting cements. Studies were made over a temperature range from 110° to 270°F., and a pressure range from atmospheric to 3000 lb. per sq. inch. APPARATUS The fluidity of cement slurries at atmospheric pressure is usually determined with the Halliburton consistometer1 or the Thickening Time Tester.2 These instruments are similar, in many respects, to an ordinary ice-cream freezer. The slurry to be tested is placed in a container that is rotated at a constant speed with an electric motor. Constant temperature is maintained by surrounding the container with a thermostatically controlled bath. The torque on the paddles, which is proportional to the force needed to shear the slurry, is indicated on a scale. The Halliburton instrument is calibrated from 0 to 100 poises against fluids of known viscosity. To permit direct correlation of observed elevated pressure data with those published at atmospheric pressure, the authors' designs of the slurry container, paddle, and torque indicator closely resemble those used on the Halliburton instrument. Duplicate results may be obtained at atmospheric pressure in either instrument. Instead of the atmospheric constant-temperature bath, one was built from a high-pressure steel bull plug. A Uni-Bolt union equipped with a blanking plug serves as the top, permiting the instrument to be opened or closed in less than one minute. The slurry container is built from Shelby steel tubing. "This paper describes the modifications made to the Fox Mine copper concentrate bin in order to obtain a continuous flow condition. The design of these modifications is based on test results obtained on Fox Mine concentrate using the flow factor testing machine in the research facilities of Cominco at Trail, B.C.The original design consisted of a cylindrical steel bin on a concrete slab with two slot-discharge openings. Based on predictions of the maximum mass flow hopper angle for conical and wedge shaped hoppers for the concentrate on various potential bin lining materials, Ultra-High Molecular Weight (UHMW) Polymer was selected as a liner.Using the recommended angles for conical and wedge shaped hoppers, the profile of the bin base was changed to suit the existing slot openings.The initial method of fastening the liner resulted in failure of the connections. Subsequent modification to the zinc concentrate bin fastener system proved satisfactory and it has now been in operation for over one year without any separation of the lining material.Utilization of flow testing procedures on concentrate samples has demonstrated that proper design of storage bins or hoppers to achieve continuous flow can be incorporated into the design of new plants."

The 21st Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel in Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Thomas J. O’Neil, recently retired president and chief operating officer of Cleveland Cliffs Mining. Prior to Cliffs, O’Neil spent 10 years with Cyprus Minerals. He was also professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct James Boyd and Thomas F. Walsh. Walsh discovered a rich gold telluride vein in Ouray, CO, which became the Camp Bird gold mine. Boyd was a former director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, vice president of Kennecott Copper and later president of Copper Range.

Gypsum in Manitoba is quarried from the Jurassic Amaranth Formation a1 Gypsumville and Harcus; it has been mined near Amaranth and Silver Plains. At Gypsumville, gypsum is carbonate- free but has thin clay laminae between gypsum layers; the rock is folded in places, and some anhydrite is present. At Harcus, gypsum contains scattered dolomite, both as patches in a penemosaic pattern and as thin layers; small chalcedonic concretions also can be found. The quarry at Harcus was opened late in 1978 and currently produces about 100,000 tonnes annually. The two inactive mines near Amaranth operated from 1932 lo 1963 and from 1967 to 1970, and contain a central anhydrite layer. The mine near Silver Plains was flooded from an underlying artesian aquifer in 1975 and has not been reopened. Manitoba gypsum is used in cemem plants in Mani1oba and Saskatchewan and in wallboard plants in the three Prairie Provinces.

The subject of rapid excavation tunneling is one that is extremely important to the people in the Metropolitan area of Chicago. My personal observation is that it is also extremely important to the urban communities around the U.S., to many local and state governments, and to the public officials who are deeply concerned about state affairs and taxes. The Metropolitan Chicago area is in fact, (as are 40 other major urban areas in the U.S.) confronted at the present time with a very serious combined sewer overflow, drainage and pollution problem which accounts for an estimated 40% of the pollutional load on its waterway system. In response to this the District has to date spent some seven millions of dollars in an attempt to find the most economical solution available for the elimination of this problem. This study included extensive investigations of the geological strata, the quantity and quality of storm runoff to be dealt with, and the various methods of storage and treatment available. It has considered solving the overflow problem by a concept involving a series of tunnels, rock tunnels, shafts and storage areas which will collect, retain and subsequently treat that portion of the combined sewer overflow which can be handled in the most cost-effective and economical way, consistent with following the federal and state standards - with which we at the present time agree in principle.

Clearly there is a tremendous need for assistance in Eastern Europe since most industries must undergo major restructuring. The new governments face many dilemmas, the first task being to establish an order of priorities to deal with the numerous problems at hand. Issues such as the standard of living take low priority compared with market economy and ecological problems. The concept of a Comecon market is now virtually non-existent and trade in roubles ceased from 1991. From this time onwards countries were obliged to trade using free market prices. Governments must also avoid the economic mistakes of countries such as Poland with its high devaluation and lack of economic control and, if possible, contain inflation and unemployment. The privatization of Eastern European enterprises raises considerable difficulties, particularly for large corporations, employing anywhere from 50-100,000 people, which played a major role in the national economy. Whichever method is selected, however, still has to overcome the problem of lack of capital and evaluating the national property. For example, earnings represent only a small percentage of the value of these national industries and thus cannot convert to private ownership without foreign capital investment, either direct or as joint venture capital.

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. in Mexico, has nine mining operations, six managed by Peñoles (base metal mines) and three managed by Fresnillo plc (precious metal mines). Seven of the operations use flotation and the other two are heap leach operations, one for gold and the other one for copper.This paper gives a brief introduction of Peñoles, shows mine locations and describes the main process characteristics of each concentrator. It also presents four of the new operating practices that were implemented over the last four years to improve the economics of the mining operations. These include (1) the use of centrifugal gravity concentrators to increase the recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) and silver (GRS), (2) the use of expert systems to reduce process variability while increasing grades and recoveries, (3) the application of the Six Sigma methodology to key projects to ensure success and personnel development and (4) the use of water chemistry fundamentals to identify chemistry problems and design adequate solutions for improving grades and recoveries.INTRODUCTIONPeñoles was founded in 1887. It is a mining group with integrated smelting, refining and chemicals producing operations. Peñoles is the world largest producer of refined silver and metallic bismuth, the leading Latin American producer of refined gold and lead. It is amongst the world leading producers of refined zinc and sodium sulfate.Peñoles operates and controls six underground mines in Mexico and is the largest producer of zinc and lead of the country. It also produces copper concentrates and cathodes. Through its 77.1% equity stake in Fresnillo plc (a London Stock Exchange listed company); Peñoles is also a significant producer of gold and silver. Fresnillo plc operates three precious metal mines in Mexico. While Fresnillo is the world largest primary silver mine, Ciénega and Herradura are two leading gold mines of Mexico. Figure 1 shows a map of Mexico indicating the locations of the Peñoles mines. The main process characteristics of each concentrator are listed in Table 1."

Examination of cored material from the Southern Extension of the Florida Phosphate District has indicated a decidedly complex and diverse sequence of phosphatic sedimentary units. The perfunctory logging techniques formerly used in the Central District are inadequate to properly describe the intricate geology of these sediments. Adequate geologic training and familiarity with the potential ramifications of his judgement are a necessity for the logging geologist. A combination descriptive-graphic logging model is proposed that utilizes a standardized sediment nomenclature system and descriptive symbols for type materials commonly found in these sediments. Justification for adoption of this or a similar logging model is discussed.

In this paper, ductile iron material with different content of niobium was prepared by a scientific melting method. Image Analysis Software was used to studied the effect of niobium microalloying on both pearlite content and pearlite lamellar spacing in ductile iron quantitatively. The results showed that the addition of a small amount of niobium could increase the pearlite content and decrease pearlite lamellar spacing of ductile iron effectively.

THE valuable mineral content of the current feed to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalcocite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil, as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0).

MUCH descriptive matter has appeared on the subject of suspension roof supports, or roof bolting, as it is more commonly called. The widespread introduction of roof bolting into coal mines and metal mines is truly phenomenal. Mine operators were quick to recognize the advantages of supporting wide openings without hindrance to machine maneuverability and ventilation. Although suspension roof support has long been installed at St. Joseph Lead Co. mines in southeast Missouri,'" its application to coal mining presented new problems, such as proper anchorage and bearing for the bolts, bolt diameter, and spacing of bolts. After continuous testing and experimenting at the mines, standard roof-bolting materials were determined.'!' The study reported in this paper is not concerned with such details as bolt diameter, which may be considered already solved in practice. In the tests discussed here, small models patterned on actual bolts were found to function in the same way and as satisfactorily as their prototypes. The aim of these tests was rather to investigate the influence of roof-bolting systems on the stress distribution around mine openings and to study the fracture patterns obtained in actual testing. Little was found about this in the literature, as testing of suspension roof methods and quantitative measurements are only now coming to the fore. Several suggestions and actual measurements have been made to evaluate critically the functioning of roof bolting systems, single roof bolts, and parts thereof. Outstanding among them is Bucky's outline of structural model tests.'" Since none of the suggested testing equipment was available, however, for the experiments discussed below, a different approach was chosen. The response of a mine roof under stress has often been compared to that of a beam. The slow coming down and bending through of beam or plate-like banks of shale, sandstone, or top coal is a familiar occurrence, extensively cited in the literature." It was felt that testing of roof-bolt systems installed in a concrete beam which was loaded in bending would be a fair approximation of the behavior of a mine roof underground. Another school of thought considers the roof behavior over an underground opening in connection with the stress distribution all around a circular or rectangular opening. This is more accurate, and leads to the concept of a dome-shaped zone of material destroyed under tensile stress. This is likewise a common sight in unsupported roadways where the continuous fall of roof results in what has been called the natural outline of roof fracture. This theory could not be tested and is treated separately in Appendix B. It is important to note that according to both assumptions the immediate roof fails in tension; the use of a beam in these tests, therefore, should give information valid for either of the two theories. With the testing equipment at hand it was possible to load concrete beams 6xlx0.5 ft under two-point loading, giving an equal bending moment over the center part in which the model bolts were installed. A comparison was made of the ultimate loads needed to break plain beams and beams in which roof bolts were installed. Arrangements were made with: 1—plain beams; 2—bolts with plate washers, some with holes drilled at 90" angles and others with holes drilled at 45" angles; 3—bolts with channel irons underneath; 4—bolts in holes filled afterward with cement; and 5—bolts anchored in a stronger stratum. The foregoing arrangement is made in order of increasing strength, as assumed from the theory of reinforced concrete. Likewise, laminated beams with wooden model bolts and with combinations of the foregoing set-ups were tested. All in all, 21 experiments were made out of the much greater number of combinations possible. There were, too, some trial tests. Enough observations from this limited number were made to interpret the behavior of mine roof, supported by various types of suspension bolts, at fracture. In present-day concepts, which have been proved by mathematical derivations and stress analyses, any opening driven underground will change the distribution and magnitude of the stresses existing around it. It does not matter whether the stresses become visible, as in rocks whose strength is less than the forces acting upon them, or whether they are invisible, as in the gangways lacking evidence of rock pressure. In this latter case the rocks can withstand changes in stress-distribution. To consider the mine roof as a beam, there are, with transversal loading, tensile stresses in the lower fiber and compressive stresses in the upper layers above the neutral axis of the beam. The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

In order to assist better countermeasures for ventilation control in normal/abnormal condition of mine ventilation network in real time, branch relation table derived from a macroscopic characteristic of ventilation network is introduced in this study. The main results in this study are as follows; 1) One of macro characteristics of a ventilation network, as a relation between airflow rates in two branches chosen arbitrarily, is specified under the change of aerodynamic resistances in a branch. Airflow rate in a branch can be estimated by airflow rate in other branch changing aerodynamic resistance by using empirical formula. The empirical formula by computer simulation of the Horonai coal mine, Japan is considered to be a one-valued function with monotone or extremums. 2) A branch relation table shows the macro characteristics, mentioned above, of all the set of two-branch combinations in a network. Elements in the table give both information of control possibility range of airflow rate and total number of extremums in an empirical formula. 3) It is important that when aerodynamic resistance change in a branch is estimated by measuring airflow rates in two typical branches, the two branches should be chosen from branch combinations with monotonous relation in the branch relation table. 4) A flexible expert system to assist ventilation control in the specified branch in real time has been developed by using a branch relation table for a ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch, such a coal face and an advancing face. A fuzzy reasoning is utilized in the recognition of the safety factor, methane concentration, in the system. And when conviction degree in recognition for methane concentration at the specified branch is too low, the system searches for other branch combinations in the branch relation table stored in the system, to use other ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch. When a needed ventilation transfer diagram is not stored in the system, the expert system asks automatically the ventilation simulation from other computers linked to the main computer automatically. The system repeats consultation until conviction value of safety in the specified branch approached

Power consumption and operating variables in air-liquid systems for a wide range of operating conditions in the turbulent region have been correlated by two dimensionless groups involving the power ratio and the flow number. The form of the correlation was developed by considering flow balances related to the air-liquid composite density in the impeller zone. Data for two phase air-liquid systems, both from literature and from the present investigation, has been correlated with high statistical significance. Two phase solid-liquid and three phase gas-liquid-solid systems have also been correlated. Someone once said, "The safest mine is one in which no one goes into." We all recognize this as being perhaps wishful thinking. We also recognize in it a certain amount of truth and an ultimate goal if we are optimistic. All of us are aware of the many things that have been done, are being done and will be done to reduce manpower in mining. For those of us; who are optimistic about this ultimate goal it would appear from the records-we are more than well on our way to the so called safest mine. Let us see what has been done in the past 20 years. T e period from 1935 to 1956. For example in the coal mining industry: In 1935 there were employed 462,903 men who produced an average of 805 tons per man per year or 4.50 tons per man per day. In 1955 there were employed 225,093 men who produced an average of 2,064 tons per man per year or 9.84 tons per man per day. There are no comparable figures compiled for the metal mining industry as a whole that can be broken down in this manner. However, from examination of figures available for different groups in metal mining there is a trend similar to that in coal mining. No-dbout the above figures reflect the intense development and perfection of machines and mining systems to tear out, transport and process our mineral wealth. The figures also show the mining industry has been able to double its production and at the same time reduce its manpower by half. When you compare the number of men employed today with the number which would have been employed 20 years ago to gain todays production at that time it become apparent that greater safety has been accomplished. For example the years 1935 to 1956 for all mining show. In 1935 there were approximately 649,226 men employed in mining and reports show 1,399 fatalities and 74,913 non-fatal injuries. In 1955 when there were 313,883 men employed in mining 496 fatalities and 25,365 non-fatal injuries were reported. To have produced the same tonnage of material in 1935 that was produced in 1955 it would have required the employment of approximately 1,298,452 men. 2,798 could have been fatalities and 149,826 could have had non-fatal injuries. You can now measure the full impact of what has been accomplished in the past 2o years by the aggressiveness of mine management, the wizardry of our engineering personnel and the thoughtfulness and devotion of our safety people and their programs. Therefore, there is a trend towards the goal of our opening statement. We whoare toptimistic believe this trend will accelerate at a-faster pace. Why? Because anyone engaged in the mining industry today can well afford to invest a minimum of $30,000.00 in capital equipment todisplace the labor of one man. This fact alone is a terrific incentive for mine management to apply and manufacturers to develop equipment of a type to get the men out of the mine. Now you can determine this problem not only becomes one of safety but also one of economics, When productivity is stepped up and manpower reduced management is learning the hard way what it means to them; in the profit and los s column when a few minutes of delay or downtime of costly machines and processes occur. They have learned that fast and efficient communication systems are the best means of combating breakdown, delays, bottlenecks, supply problems, the saving of lives and property and increasing production.
