The stringent environmental regulations for air pollution regarding emission control, along with the need of dry concentrates to feed autogenous smelting processes, are enhancing the development of cleaner technologies. Indirect drying of concentrates by a Kvaemer steam dryer is a technology with promising results, reducing dust entrainment to the exhaust gas stream and leading to smaller dust separation units. The Kvaemer dryers are designed for a very high availability, a high-energy efficiency, low amount and velocity of exhaust gases, no SO2, CO or CO, emissions combined with a wide range of satisfactory operating conditions and low total operational costs.

BHPÆs Cannington process plant was commissioned in October 1997. The Cannington ore contains high grades of silver, lead and zinc but also contains high levels of fluorine which must be removed to produce a marketable concentrate. As a consequence the plant is more complex than the typical base metal concentrator. Some of the features of the Cannington operation include a single stage autogenous mill, multiple stages of flotation cleaning, two leach circuits, pressure filtration and a paste fill plant. The start-up and achievement of design performance for new lead/zinc operations has traditionally taken much longer than for gold or copper operation and is littered with many tales of woe with feasibility targets often not achieved (Agarwal, Brown and Katrak, 1984; Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999; Leung, Andreatidis, Woodall and Alford, 1996; Sherman, 1999; Ward, 1998).

"Lindgren (1933) defined a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks associated with large quantities of gold and rare earth elements (REE) that extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Texas and eastern Mexico. The North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt since has been exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits. In New Mexico, Mid-Tertiary alkaline to calc-alkaline rocks are found with seven types of deposits in these districts: (1) polymetallic epithermal/mesothermal veins, (2) gold-bearing breccias/quartz veins, (3) Cu-Au, Au and Mo porphyry deposits, (4) skarns and carbonate-hosted deposits, (5) iron skarns and replacement bodies (with some gold), (6) gold placers, and (7) Th-REE (with some U, Nb) epithermal veins. Some of New Mexico’s largest gold and REE deposits are found within this belt. Their origin is not well understood, but a compilation of new data (age dates, isotopic and chemical analyses) allows for a better understanding. The diversity of igneous rocks and associated mineral deposits along this belt suggests that this region is characterized by highly fractionated and differentiated; multiple pulses of magmas and involves both upper mantle and lower crustal sources. Once magmas and metal-rich fluids reached shallow levels, local structures and wall rock compositions determined distribution of and final style of intrusions and resulting mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION Lindgren (1933) was one of the first geologists who noted that a belt of alkaline-igneous rocks extends from Alaska and British Columbia southward into New Mexico, Trans-Pecos Texas, and eastern Mexico (Fig. 1) and that these rocks contain relatively large quantities of gold, fluorine, zirconium, rare earth elements (REE), and other elements. Since then, the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt has been explored and exploited for numerous types of mineral deposits, especially gold. The North American Cordilleran alkaline belt is a north-south belt of alkaline igneous rocks and crustal thickening, roughly coinciding with the Great Plains physiographic margin with the Basin and Range (Rio Grande rift) and Rocky Mountains physiographic provinces (Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Bonham, 1988; Thompson, 1991a; Richards, 1995; McLemore, 1996; Jensen and Barton, 2000; Kelley and Luddington, 2002). Deposits within this belt have produced significant amounts of gold in the United States and Canada and include Cripple Creek, Colorado (702 metric tons of gold production), Black Hills, South Dakota (235 metric tons gold production) and Landsky-Zortman, Montana. In New Mexico, the North American Cordilleran alkaline belt extends from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Raton, southward to the Cornudas Mountains, in the northern Trans-Pecos alkaline belt (Fig. 2). The alkaline-igneous related mineral deposits in New Mexico have been referred to as Great Plains Margin (GPM) deposits by North and McLemore (1986, 1988) and McLemore (1996, 2001). Alternative classifications by other workers include Au-Ag-Te veins (Cox and Bagby, 1986; Bliss et al., 1992; Kelley et al., 1998), alkalic-gold or alkaline-igneous related gold deposits (Fulp and Woodward, 1991a; Thompson, 1991a, b; Bonham, 1988; Mutschler et al., 1985, 1991; Richards, 1995), porphyry gold deposits, and the North American Cordilleran belt of alkaline igneous rocks (Woolley, 1987; Mutschler et al., 1991)."

The dispersion model of nonideal flow was applied to describe the hydrodynamic state within the flotation column. Residence time distribution (RTD) data of a laboratory flotation column were measured to determine the parameters of the model. The effects of operating variables and column geometry on the Peclet number which reflects the extent of axial dispersion were investigated and a semi-empirical expression of Pe was formulated. The dispersion model was validated for the column flotation of ultrafines coal. Under the conditions of sufficient aeration rate and frother addition, a good agreement between the measured recoveries and predicted data was obtained. The dispersion model with first-order flotation rate process of the flotation column developed in this study is useful in predicting the collection zone recovery of fine coal, and for the flotation column scale-up.

In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.

The treatment of ores in preparation for fatty acid flotation is characterized by a wide divergence in methods, and attempts to define "common practice", even for the same type of mineral, are usually of little value because of the numerous exceptions. Such factors as desliming, pulp density, pulp temperatures, and reagents for conditioning are successfully employed under conditions representing almost extreme opposites. More precise control of variables is necessary than with sulphydric flotation processes It appears likely that variations result from independent development of a process from the multitude of variables that characterize fatty acid flotation and the ores of non-metallic minerals. Consequently, a symposium is a suitable way of presenting a summary of pretreatment methods for fatty acid flotation processes, together with froth control practices, as they exist today.

As far back as 1939 state laws have required reclamation of mined lands. Reclamation has been the topic of many discussions and presentations, especially since the late 1960's. In the past ten years many states have added legislation concerning the reclamation of coal-mined lands. In the near future, it seems certain that some federal regulations will be passed that will set minimum guidelines for the states to regulate. Besides the requirement of returning the land to the approximate original contour, future regulations will more than likely demand replacing topsoil from one to five feet thick. As regulations become more stringent, costs will rise accordingly. Since no one has developed a machine that can do all reclamation work by itself, it is necessary to review in detail the tools available and to select the most economical means.

The shape and position of the gas-oil transition zone during downdip displacement of oil by gas has been calculated using flow equations which include the effects of gravity, relative permeability, capillary pressure and compressibility of the fluids. The calculations treat the problem in two space dimensions, and results are compared with data from a laboratory model tilted at 30° and 60° from the horizontal on displacements near and above the maximum rate at which gravity segregation prevents channeling of the gas along the top of the stratum. The good agreement between calculated and experimental results demonstrates the validity of the tecbnique as well as that of the flow equations. INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the fluid distribution and movement in an oil reservoir is important in producing operations and estimation of reserves. The history of the oil industry has included steady progress in improving the accuracy of calculations which provide the required knowledge. The earliest method of calculating reservoir performance consisted of material-balance equations based on the assumption that all properties were uniform throughout a reservoir.l For many reservoirs such a simple formulation is still the most useful. However, when large pressure and saturation gradients exist in a reservoir, the assumption of uniform values throughout may lead to significant error. To reduce these errors, Buckley and Leverett2 introduced a displacement eqation which considers pressure and saturation gradients. Methods available at that time permitted solutions to the Buckley-Leverett equation in one space dimension; these solutions have been very useful in solving many problems related to the production of oil. However, the one-dimensional methods are not adequate for systems in which saturations vary in directions other than the direction of flow. An example of such a system is the case of gas displacing oil down a dipping stratum in which the gas-oil contact becomes significantly tilted. Of course, the Buckley-Leverett displacement method cannot predict the tilt of the gas-oil contact. Recent improvements3,4 of the one-dimensional Buckley-Leverett method achieve some success in predicting the tilt of the gas-oil contact at sufficiently low flow rates. However, at rates high enough that the viscous pressye gradient nearly equals or exceeds the gravity gradient, even these improved one-dimen,sional methods incorrectly predict the shape and velocity of the contact. Further progress in estimating such fluid movements in a reservoir appears to require consideration of the problem in more than one space dimension. The recent two-dimensional method of Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford5 appears adaptable to calculate changes with time of the saturation distribution in a vertical cross-section of a reservoir. The movement of saturation contours should represent the moving fluid contacts and include the effects of crossflow due to gravity, as well as variations in the rock and fluid properties. The nonlinear nature of the equations used in the method has prevented proof of the validity of the solutions. Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford made some comparisons with experiment but did not include cases in which gravity was important nor cases involving displacement by the nonwetting phase.For these reasons, a test of the two-dimensional method for a case in which these factors are included would be very desirable. The test selected was a comparison of calculated results with those from a carefully controlled laboratory experiment on a model with measured physical properties. The model selected was one in which gas displaced oil down a tilted, rectangular sand pack. The model can be thought of as representing a vertical cross-section taken parallel to the dip of a reservoir. The displacement thus simulates gas displacing oil downdip that might result from gas-cap expansion or gas injection. This report outlines the calculation method used

A recent landslide comprising approximately 12 acres (4.86 hectare) and a displaced volume of more than 500,000 cy (382,000 m3) caused the shutdown of a four-lane state highway and two high-capacity freight railway lines. After completion of immediate landslide stabilization activities, various long-term slope stabilization measures were implemented that focused primarily on gradual slope unloading in areas near and upslope from the scarp of the landslide. Near the completion of the upslope excavation, an anchored soldier beam and lagging wall was constructed to allow for the temporary unloading of the toe of the main landslide area to facilitate installation of a permanent underdrain. The design of the anchored wall utilized information collected during the rehabilitation construction and included inclinometer data, site survey results, piezometer data, and field construction observations. Using the history of site-specific movements, results of back-analysis calculations from the landslide, and geometry/performance of the post-construction slope configurations, the fully softened and residual shear strengths along two potentially critical sliding surfaces were calculated. Owing to the high confidence in the values of shear strength as afforded by this information, the confidence in local groundwater conditions, and control of the loads, the designers selected a relatively low, calculated short-term factor of safety (FS) (i.e., FS ˜ 1.1 to 1.2) for the most critical unloading step. Long term calculated FS values on the order of 1.2 to 1.3 were anticipated. This paper describes the detailed evaluation of the landslide slope movement data associated with the shallow and deep potentially critical failure surfaces and selection of the associated values of design shear strength for these potentially critical surfaces. A description is presented of the analyses and design of the anchored wall, measures implemented during construction to minimize slope movements, and post-construction monitoring results during the unloading and subsequent installation of the underdrain.

Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

Cansiderable time and effort frequently are expended to establish, with a degree of confidence, the PVT behavior of pure substances. In particular, a great deal of experimental information contributed by a number of investigators is available in the literature. The data of each investigator, although significant in themselves, cannot be used with a high degree of confidence until they are compared with the continuum of information presented by others. Current interest in thermodynamic and transport properties, for not only the gaseous state but the con-densed state as well, requires that PVT infarmation be presented for both regions. The density dependence on temperature and pressure, when presented as a continuum, is of considerable value in itself, especially since the available equations of state fail to properly account for the PVT behavior in the condensed state. For this reason and to incorporate PVT data recently presented in the literature, this investigation was carried out. In their studies concerned with the thermodynamic properties of methane, Matthews and Hurd in 1946 utilized the data of Kvalnes and Gaddy and Olds, Reamer, Sage and Lacey to establish the PVT behavim of methane in the superheated region and the saturated liquid densities of Keyes, Taylor and Smithl in conjunction with the Clapeyron equation to develop the densities for the saturated envelope. Current activity sponsored by API Project No. 44 under the direction of F. D. Rossini has led to a tabular presentation of compressibility factors for gaseous methane in the superheated region.la These values were obtained by using smoothed residuals, developed from experimental data and the Ben edict-Webb-Rubin equation,' to establish internally consistent compressibility factors for the real gas. This approach offers probably the most precise presentation of PVT information for gaseous methane to date. The PVT behavior of methane also can be represented accurately by equations of state such as the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation or the Martin-Hoa equation.' These equations, although valuable for analytically representing the PVT behavior, lack precision in the compressed-liquid region. The PVT data available in the literature for methane were utilized to obtain reduced densities that are presented in Figs. 1 and 2 as functions of reduced temperature with parameters of reduced pressure. The critical constants utilized for methane are those reported by Kobe and Lynn." These critical values, T, = 191.1°K, PC = 45.8 atm and p, = 0.162 gm/cc, produce a critical compressibility factor, z, = 0.289. "A new automatic material- handling system for cathode transportation has been developed. The first system went into service in August 1994 and the remains will be operational subsequently.Because of the complex cell-layout and the number of cells in each row, the critical part of this work was achieving a planned cycle time. This cycle time is determined by the power costs.The central monitoring system for machine operation was started in June 1996, using original application software based on MICROSOFT EXCEL ® on WINDOWS 95® .As a result, only one person is now required to operate both a crane and a stripping machine for one row of about 50 cells.INTRODUCTIONMainly due to the strong yen and the relatively low price of metal, the zinc refineries in Japan are being forced to reduce production costs again and again.The trend of lijima's production costs is shown in Figure 1.[1] The ratio of labor costs becomes gradually higher. Therefore it is effective to reduce the labor costs in order to reduce the production costs. In Japan, electricity cost during day time is too high to produce zinc at a reasonable cost, that is why the actual production is far from the capacity of production at a cell house. That means a plant in Japan has the disadvantage of relatively low productivity for cell house operation.Saving labor costsSome automatic cranes have been applied to save labor costs for cell house operation in the world. In consideration of the mentioned low productivity, the installation of an Automatic Cathode Transfer (ACn system for transportation of cathodes was planned without changing the present cell house and stripping machines to lower the investment costs. The ACT system must keep up with the stripping machine which is able to strip deposit zinc from a cathode sheet at the rate of 6 seconds.The fifth ACT system of seven was installed in August 1996 and the last one will be operational subsequently."

"El presente trabajo describe algunos estudios realizados sobre las condiciones ambientales en operaciones de subsuelo, en 30 minas peruanas. Dichos estudios comprenden un período de 10 años (1949-1958) donde se evaluaron los riesgos de contraer silicosis en las zonas mineras, así como aquellos análisis relacionados con las operaciones de subsuelo. La gran mayoría de minas evaluadas están ubicadas en la región de la Sierra (Junin, Pasco, Huancavelica, Cajamarca), mientras que la minoría en Arequipa, Puno, La libertad y Lima, cuyas alturas oscilan entre 1000 y 4800 m.s.n.m. Los resultados de la concentración de monóxido de carbono señalan que de las 20 minas examinadas, solo 8 dieron un 100% de detecciones por debajo del límite permisible. Mientras que del 12 restante, la concentración del gas permanecía luego de un tiempo de dos horas. Por ende, existe una mayoría de centros mineros donde no se concientiza el riesgo de salud sobre estos niveles de monóxido, y tampoco se ejecuta los principios de ventilación por dilución como el mejor medio de evitarlos. Bajo estas circunstancias nace la silicosis, enfermedad producida por la producción de partículas de sílice libre depositada en los pulmones. En 1935, Cummings propuso como primer criterio de riesgo, la relación de la exposición del polvo con la cantidad de sílice libre y a partir de allí, se adoptaron medidas basadas en este primer criterio de ""exposición-respuesta"", encontrándose que el valor máximo del sílice libre está en los minerales de cuarzo, incluso cinco años antes de su exposición. Mientas que la relación alternativa de ""dosis-respuesta"" es más factible en los tres estadíos de la silicosis, tanto en el sentido de sus concentraciones, como en el número de años de exposición."

Aluminum alloys containing relatively small amounts of magnesium and silicon are of commercial interest because they are readily workable in the annealed form and may be hardened and strengthened by suitable heat treatment. An intermediate temper can be produced in these alloys by quenching after a Solution heat treatment and the alloy in this condition can be formed easily. Artificial aging is required to obtain the maximum mechanical properties but this aging does not cause distortion nor require elaborate heat-treating equipment. The hardening of the alloys after quenching is attributable in part to the retention of the compound Mg²Si in solid solution, while the maximum hardness obtained by subsequent artificial aging is attributed to the fact that the solid solubility of the compound Mg²Si in aluminum decreases with decreasing temperature. Considering the importance of aluminum alloys susceptible to heat treatment, it is surprising how few fundamental investigations have been carried out on the aluminum-magnesium silicide alloys. This paper deals principally with the solid solubility relations of the compound Mg2Si in aluminum and is the sixth paper of a series1 from the laboratories of the Aluminum Co. of America reporting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from high-purity aluminum."

Recent research conducted by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Re¬search Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, which are tightly wrapped with many turns and which carry current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften, making them prone to damage. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor tem¬perature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125-, µm graded index multimode optical fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperatures with an accuracy of ± I °C over a length of 4 km at I -mintervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted that simulate actual mine conditions. A. G. Cockbain—The paper by Burlingame, Bitsianes and Joseph is of great interest in extending the work done on high grade sinters, particularly that of Hessle, and the development and application to them of the technique of McBriar, Johnson, Andrews and Davies on ironstone sinters. In this laboratory the work of McBriar et al. has also been continued and extended to cover high grade sinters, and a sectioning technique similar to that used by McBriar et al. was attempted on sinter cakes made in the laboratory sinter unit, using magnetite concentrates (containing 64 pct Fe). In these experiments no attempt was made to flush out the products of combustion with nitrogen before cooling. It was considered that free air penetration would occur on only a limited scale with the size of sinter cake made (14 in. sq x 12 in. deep). Chemical analyses of the zones showed generally similar features of those described by Burlingame et al. and especially the FeO rich region at and just behind the flame front, i.e. zones of ignition and combustion. This seems to indicate that the nitrogen atmosphere does not materially affect the states of oxidation in the sinter cake or at least that special care is not required unless the sinter cake is small. Burlingame et al. consider that FeO present has some significant part to play in the mechanism of sintering. This view does not find favor with the author. The reduction of iron oxides in the presence of red hot coke is a well known phenomenon, whether conducted in an atmosphere of nitrogen or in a crucible in air, and in view of the presence of some carbon in the hot sinter, especially just at the ignition zone, cessation of the progress of the flame front will in no way affect the reduction of iron oxides near hot coke. Even in a nitrogen atmosphere some CO and CO, will be generated by reduction and by continual oxidation and reduction of CO as the transfer agent, the oxidation state of the iron oxides can be lowered quite rupidly so long as free carbon exists with enough heat. Knowing the composition of the gas at the flame front (obtainable by probes), it would be possible to calculate the static oxidation state of Fe2O3/Fe3O2 in equilibrium with it and hence obtain a check on the chemical analyses to see if in fact direct reduction of the Fe2O3/Fe2O1 to FeO has taken place. Have the authors attempted this? It appears to this writer that what is required is some means of reducing rapidly the heat content of the ignition zone and immediately behind, and at the same time insuring no oxidation by the air. In ironstone sinters the difficulty of oxidation state of the iron did not arise on account of the very large slag bulk. However, in high grade sinters knowledge of this, and also the mechanism whereby high oxidation states can be obtained in the final sinter, is of great interest. R. D. Burlingame (author's reply)—The question has been raised as to whether the high FeO content found in high-fuel sinters is due to actual reduction at the advancing flame front or due to unavoidable direct reduction during the quenching period. For such direct reduction to have taken place in the freshly-formed sinter, a considerable amount of solid carbon would have had to escape combustion and be available throughout the hot sinter zone during the quenching period. A simple stoichiometric calculation with the limited data available indicates that a zone of freshly-formed sinter over 2 in. wide must have averaged roughly 2 pct C to accomplish the amount of reduction found. Furthermore, the presence of this amount of carbon would indicate that the fuel in the charge had not burned over a narrow front but over a zone at least 2 in. thick. In contrast to such a condition, the data of the present investigation indicate that the combustion of fuel is confined mainly to a narrow front in which high temperatures and reducing conditions favor. the formation of excess ferrous iron.
