The problem of setting the proper control objectives and/or having several objectives to be met in the implementation of grinding control strategies can be resolved. The design and implementation of a distributed control system for safe operation of a grinding circuit while maximizing profit is presented. An optimal recovery/throughput target for a desired grind is accomplished by advanced control strategies at the DCS level. A mill load constraint control technique provides stable operation with a substantial increase in throughput, while the desired grind index is maintained by an inferential grind control technique without using a particle size analyzer. The integration of crushing/grinding and flotation in the overall design was the key to the success of the project. This synergistic effect was obtained by implementing a computer -plant management system in the concentrator. The overall philosophy of keeping the implementation simple but not simpler was used.

The placer mining industry of the West Coast region of the South Island is based largely around the production of alluvial gold, although other valuable minerals are also present. Since the first major discoveries in 1864-65, reported gold production has totalled around 264 t (8.5 Moz). During the past 10 years, annual production has totalled around 1460 kg (47,000 oz). It is anticipated that gold production over the next three years will continue at a level of 1400-1800 kg.   Annual gold production peaked during 1866 at approximately 17,170 kg (550,000 oz) and has not exceeded 100,000 oz since 1885. This reflects the ease with which gold was won from shallow, rich deposits that were present at many localities. Subsequently, there has been a general decline in the availability of this type of deposit, a trend that will continue in the future. This paper outlines the present state of placer mining in the West Coast region, gives some historical background to the industry and briefly predicts future trends.

lntermediate phases in the binary metal alloy systems Ti-Zn, Ti-Hg, Zr-Zn, Zr-Cd, and Zr-Hg have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction methods. Gamma-TiBHg and Zr3Hg have a beta tungsten structure; TiHg and ZrHg are analogous to ordered AuCu (L l0 type); delta-TixHg and ZrHg, are isomorphous with ordered AuCu,, (L l2 type); ZrZnz is face-centered cubic (C 15 type); TiZna crystallizes in a C 14 type structure; and Zrll-, occurs in cubic and tetragonal modifications in which a random distribution of atoms exists. Additional information for the intermediate phase TiZn, is presented. THE physical metallurgy of titanium and zir-conium when alloyed with elements in subgroup 11-B of the periodic table has received comparatively little attention in the literature. Laves and Wallbaum' reported the existence of several intermediate phases in the system Ti-Zn. They identified TiZn as a CsCl (B 2) structure and described TiZn, as an ordered Cu,Au (L 1, type) crystal structure. Gebhardt' investigated very limited zinc-rich regions in the systems Ti-Zn and Zr-Zn. Phase relationships in these partial constitution diagrams were deduced from the results of thermal analysis and metallography, X-ray results being inconclusive. The first zinc-rich intermediate phase in either system was not identified. More recently, Anderson, Boyle, and Ramsey" have had occasion to refer to a partial Ti-Zn phase diagram (unpublished data) covering the region 0 to 10 atomic pct Ti, wherein two intermediate phases corresponding approximately to TiZn,, and TiZn,, were indicated. The metals used in this investigation and typical analyses as determined by the suppliers are given in Table I. The iodide-process zirconium which was used was not hafnium free. Experimental Methods Alloy Preparation: The relative ease with which titanium and zirconium combine with other elements places extensive restrictions on the methods by which alloying can be achieved. The direct current electric arc melting procedure was found to be unsatisfactory for preparing these binary alloys and for this reason solid state diffusion methods were utilized. The iodide process titanium and zirconium rods were filed by hand. Fines were subjected to a magnetic separation and classified as to size as either finer than 200 mesh or coarser than 200 but finer than 80 mesh. Powder mixtures of various binary combinations of titanium and zirconium with zinc and cadmium were compacted in a 12 mm diameter die and then placed in Vycor or quartz vials which were evacuated and sealed. The mercury alloys were prepared in a similar manner; the proper weight of liquid mercury being placed in a vial with minus 200 mesh titanium or zirconium. These ampoules were then heat treated at various temperatures and times depending on the characteristics of the particular alloy system. Upon completion of the heat treatment the ampoules were cooled rapidly and the specimens weighed. The loss in weight varied from 1 to 3 pct (except as noted in the text) and for this reason the calculated compositions were accepted as a fair measure of the actual alloy compositions. X-Ray Dif raction Techniques: Powder diffraction experiments were conducted at room temperature with a 143.2 mm Debye-Scherrer X-ray camera in which the film was placed in the Straumanis arrangement. When copper radiation was used, a nickel filter was employed, and for the cobalt target a filter of iron oxide was used. In both cases, the /i? filter was placed between the X-ray target and the powder specimen which was mounted on a glass fiber. In 1920 the writer presented some notes, embodying his experience with storage-battery locomotives as main under-ground haulage-motors at Brazeau collieries. (1) Since that date these motors have stood up well to the test of maximum output and heavy overloads, having accomplished all that was expected of them. The notes presented in 1920 gave a brief description of the conditions under which these motors were working at Brazeau collieries, also the cost, per ton mile, of operating them. The cost per ton mile has since then been appreciably reduced, by working the locomotives nearly to capacity and under more ideal haulage conditions, on both shifts. It is not the intention of the writer to repeat what was written in 1920, but rather to give members the benefit of his experience in operating different types or designs of locomotives; to draw their attention to the drawbacks of some designs, and to the improvements made in some of the more recent storage-battery locomotives put on the market, as regards efficiency, upkeep, and safety. Because of their flexibility storage-battery locomotives have advantages over any other type of haulage, where grades are suitable to their use. The number in use in the mines in the United States has increased enormously during the past few years, and this method of haulage is, at the present time, attracting the attention of British and Continental mining engineers.

The course of the transformations on cooling in a series of Cu-A1 alloys has been followed by means of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical metallogrAphy. Specimen size was found to have a pronounced effect on the time of completion of the pearlite transformation due to modification in the unmber of nuclei. The ordeving transformation zvas observed for all cooling rates for all alloys studied, and is considered insuppvessible. At intermediate cooling' rates, a transitional struchire for 011 alloy compositions and based ox the bainite reaction was observed. The alloys of aluminum and copper possess a eu-tectoidal region at from about 9.4 to 16 pct Al. Above the critical temperature, the disordered bcc phase, 0, is stable. At subcritical temperatures, the 0 phase decomposes under equilibrium conditions into the stable phases, a and y,. At the eutectoid composition, these phases develop a lamellar pearlite structure, in appearance much like that found in steels. During rapid quenching from supercritical temperatures, the diffusion processes required for the formation of the equilibrium phases are suppressed, and the 0 transforms to an acicular martensitic phase, designated B or y' depending on the aluminum content, or to a mixture of the two. Early investigators of this system concentrated on determining the equilibrium phase diagram, ''' the structure of the equilibrium phases,3 and later the isothermal decomposition of the 0 phase at subcritical temperatures, or the decomposition of the martensite on tempering. Other work which treated the nonequilibrium transformations concentrated largely on the martensite transformations and the structure of the b and y' phases.15"17 Since the pearlite and martensite transformations in this system resemble those in steels, the one being formed by nucleation and growth of adjacent lamellae of the equilibrium phases, and the other by a diffusionless, shear-type transformation, the present study has been undertaken to investigate the structures formed on continuous cooling, with the objective of constructing cooling transformation diagrams analogous to those derived for alloy steel systems. In particular it was desired to determine whether parallels between the A1-Cu and iron-iron carbide systems on continuous cooling extended to encompass the intermediate phase, namely the bainite structures, which form by a combined martensitic-diffusion mechanism,'' but which are supersaturated with respect to the equilibrium phase upon which their crystal structure is based. To this end the transformations in representative alloys of the Cu-A1 B eutectoid system have been followed, using the methods of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and optical microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The materials tested were those used by Klier and Grmko 5 in their study of the isothermal decomposition of these alloys. The alloys were melted in graphite crucibles and chill-cast into 5 by 2 by 1/4 in. ingots. The ingots were then hot-rolled to sheets 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 in. thick. The compositions are given in Table I. Specimen Preparation. Specimens for thermal analysis were in the form of small squares approximately 1/4 in. on a side. For the 11.9 and 13.5 Al-Cu alloys, the sheet thickness was 1/16 in. and for the 10.5 A1-Cu alloy the 1/32-in. sheet was used. One lead of a chromel-alumel thermocouple was spot-welded to either face of the square with the specimen itself thus forming the hot junction of the thermocouple. Specimens for X-ray analysis were prepared as filings from martensitic sheet stock and were sealed in glass ampoules under 1/2 atm of argon. INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. Management at all levels continually strive to optimise, or make the most of resources available to them. Daily, decisions are being made on how to most efficiently locate and exploit an ore body, then process and market the recovered metal. At one level this optimisation process in the Australian mining industry appears to be successful, for example, witness the improvement in productivity and reduction in operating costs through the 1980s. Yet, at another level the industry's performance has been appreciably below expectations as measured by rate of return criteria. Companies likely to exhibit superior performance are those that are able to co-ordinate, through good planning, the optimisation process at all levels of the organisation. An important role for general management is therefore to provide the context or boundary conditions in which optimisation can Proceed.

The Copper Range Company's mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company's property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. The Iron Road Limited Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) area, located on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, covers extensive Archaean iron formations that occur as coarse-grained magnetite bearing gneiss. The cumulative strike length, estimated from aeromagnetic data, is at least 95 km.The project is located in a grain growing area 185 km west of the existing iron ore and steel making operations of OneSteel at Whyalla. A narrow gauge railway built to transport agricultural products to the deep-water port of Port Lincoln, 175 km to the south, traverses the project area. A number of well-serviced rural townships are located nearby. Current activities include resource expansion drilling, extensive metallurgical test work, community consultation and a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) that commenced in April 2010.The PFS has encompassed the Central Eyre Iron Project, comprising the three significant iron occurrences (Warramboo, Kopi and Hambidge) and was completed in early 2011. Extensive test work programs and metallurgical modelling confirmed viable process options for the project, using simple off the shelf processing technology.Preconcentration by coarse cobbing yielded promising results, and is the key to reducing not only the capital expenditure but also the operating cost, in particular the power cost, which is the highest operating cost component of a magnetite benefi ciation plant. The ore is also amendable to high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) processing. This offers a potential for further reduction of the energy requirements.Test work also confirmed that a high grade blast furnace quality concentrate (~68 per cent Fe) can be produced at a relatively coarse grind (P80 106 µm).

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical of these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2 based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in the FeMn process are principally similar, originating from silicate minerals but can have quite large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic of the FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOx in slag are not only divalent oxides but also contain some higher valent of Cr3+and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainly of Mn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexist in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. The thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys, production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed. The rock mass classification system, BQ (basic quality), is the only national system that is suitable to most kinds of rock engineering in China. It uses two main aspects of the rock mass, the intact uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the rock intactness index (KV), to obtain the rock mass BQ. The index KV could be measured by the acoustic wave method. However, because this method is an indirect approach to characterize the rock mass structure, misfits often occur between the test results and the actual rock mass characteristics. Therefore, a new parameter KGSI expressed by the geological strength index is proposed to replace the original KV, and a new method is presented to express the value of BQ as a function of the UCS and the KGSI. Then, the underground excavations at five hydropower stations were chosen as examples to study the relationship between the revised BQ and the each of the international systems (RMR, Q or RMi). In addition, the applicability of the RMR, Q, or RMi system is discussed for China?s rock characteristics and geological conditions, and suggestions are given for improving the revised BQ system.

"Microbiological activities affecting the performance of materials have been encountered in diverse situations within Ontario Hydro. Case histories of bacterial problems which are presented include ground rod corrosion at transformer stations, corrosion of a bare steel cooling water intake structure in Lake Huron and corrosion of steel components in a nuclear generation station vacuum building. Possible microbiological activities which may affect the corrosion behaviour of containers for the disposal of nuclear fuel waste in the future are discussed, as are bacterial actions suspected of causing an odour problem in residential water heaters.IntroductionBacteria are ubiquitous. Except by use of sterilization methods, bacteria -free environments are no t possible to find. Bacteria lie dormant in hostile environments, spread easily through air and water currents and reproduce rapidly under favourable conditions. Although different types of bacteria have different preferable conditions for growth, they are highly adaptive and in general, whenever there is a source of water and carbon (carbon dioxide or organic matter), there will be bacterial activities . These activities often induce or enhance costly metallic corrosion in industries and water odour problems in rural water supplies . Underground structures and systems in contact with natural water or water containing organic matter are most susceptible to bacterial attack.The types of metal-degrading bacteria , their characteristics and the conditions for growth have been reviewed extensively in the literature(1,2,3). There are several often encountered groups of bacteria which, through their metabolic processes, may lead to the degradation of metals. A large variety of bacteria produce corrosive in organic or organic acids as waste, such as the well known formation of sulphuric ac id by aerobic sulphur oxidizers . Anaerobic sulphate reducers produce hydrogen sulphide which is corrosive and has an obnoxious smell, slime-forming bacteria from slime which shelters sulphate reducers and iron bacteria oxidize ferrous to ferric ion which precipitates as hydrated oxides creating oxygen concentration cells . The following are bacterial problems encountered in Ontario Hydro. Although the number of recognized cases has been few, they show the diversity of location and environment where bacterial problems could arise. These include ground rod corrosion at transformer stations, corrosion of bare steel in a water intake structure, corrosion of steel in a nuclear generation station vacuum building and an odour problem in residential hot water tanks. In addition, possible bacterial- enhanced corrosion in containers for future disposal of nuclear fuel wastes are also discussed."

The coal and metal mines of the United States furnish this country with a large part of the fuel and material necessary to support our industries and thus make possible the welfare and prosperity of our people and even the continuance of our present-day scale of civilization. Mining companies furnish material to industry with one general purpose in mind -- the making of a profit on their work. Efforts are being made successfully and continually to reduce operating costs, to increase production per man, and to perform work as far as possible mechanically and with more efficiency. These efforts are made primarily to reduce costs, to increase production, or to do both - in other words to make more profits or more certain profits. In the endeavor to reduce expense companies are considering more and more the factors which enter into costs of production, among them the factor of accidents and their cost. This paper endeavors to estimate the approximate cost of accidents to the mining industry in order to present the saving possible through accident reduction or elimination.

Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titaniumminerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined bymeasuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved.This paper describes the development of an inductance-basedinstrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibilityon-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance.A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavengercircuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction.Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now beaccurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility,provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

For this reason, the aggregates industry needs to design and define concrete and immediate actions to address climate change. An appropriate way to achieve this is as follows: • Calculate greenhouse gas emissions, sources, and relevance factor. • Make projections of future scenarios. • Design and implement action plans The proposed climate change mitigation and adaptation projects are logistical optimizations of mining equipment (mitigation). Second is the design of an early warning system to predict possible flooding (adaptation).

Environmental desulphurization is an attractive alternative for the management of acid generating tailings. Bulk sulphide flotation is the most commonly used method to produce desulphurized tailings, as shown from many previous works. This process can reduce the volume of problematic tailings to manage by making a sulphide fraction concentrate. The desulphurized tailings can then be used as construction material for an engineered cover to prevent acid mine drainage. In this paper, the results from different laboratory and pilot scale flotation tests are presented. These results confirm that low sulphide non-acid generating tailings can be produced by froth flotation. It is also demonstrated that sulphide concentrates obtained from desulphurization mixed with the appropriate binders can be used as feed material for paste backfill. From previous work on the evaluation of operating and capital costs of the desulphurization process for different ore types, the use of desulphurization as a tailings management approach was studied for several scenarios. The desulphurization process was then compared with other technologies (underwater disposal, engineered soil cover) currently used to prevent acidic drainage (AD) for a new mining operation. Results show that partial or total desulphurization are technically and economically viable options to manage tailings during mine operation. Mine waste managers should consider desulphurization as an efficient technology.

The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) have conducted an Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) for a 6.2 km, 4-station underground extension of the Spadina Subway from Downsview Station to Steeles Avenue. This Environmental Assessment Study was performed in three phases including routes and general station locations, alignments and station concepts and detailed assessment of the effects of the undertaking. URS Canada Inc. has led the consultant team for this Study. The anticipated total duration of the project is approximately 6 years and its estimated total cost is about $1.4 billion. This paper presents the planning process of the project, the environmental and engineering challenges, and the measures taken to address them.
